ven on the darkest days of the year, it’s important to remember to notice and appreciate the good things in life. Along with apples, pies, sweaters, and glowing lights against the dark, I truly believe public libraries are something we can all be grateful for. Although the Lincolnwood Public Library is not the biggest library around, it offers a great deal to the community.

Virtual Events on Zoom. These programs are offered using Zoom and will be live at their scheduled time. Please include your email address in your registration to receive instructions on how to join the Zoom event.

Despite its small size, we offer some of the most engaging and interesting programs in the area. There are storytimes almost every day for the littlest residents, while in the afternoons and evenings we host speakers, clubs like MahJong and knitting, book groups, online tutoring for students, and much more. True, our collections are small, but they are carefully chosen to fit the information and literary needs of this community. You may not realize this, but if we don’t have a book, we can almost always get it for you from another library in our consortium, even books in other languages. I am often amazed by how quickly they come! We are part of consortiums for sharing both physical library materials and digital materials like e-books and e-audiobooks. Our staff is on the smaller side, too, but they can answer your questions, plan and host programs, give you the computer help you need, and of course order the books, DVDs, video games, and new items for the great Library of Things that you might want to try out. In our next newsletter, we’ll be letting you know about all of our future strategic plans based on your input. There is nothing we appreciate more than our residents, and we want to be sure your library is one you will appreciate for years to come.

What to know about IL HB : In June 2023, Illinois Governor Pritzker signed into law House Bill 2789, which states that Illinois libraries must either 1) adopt the American Library Association’s (ALA) Library Bill of Rights—which includes a statement reading, “Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval”— or 2) craft a written statement prohibiting the practice of banning books or other materials. Each library is also required to draft an anticensorship policy. Libraries that do not comply are inelligible for state-funded grants, which are issued by the Secretary of State’s office. This law goes into effect January 1, 2024. Registration Required
