LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It is a fun library fact that the very first library program was Summer Reading, all the way back in the 1890s. Even then, children’s librarians could see that kids who stopped reading over the summer lost some of their reading skills. That meant when they returned to school in the fall, they couldn’t pick up where they left off—they had to get back up to speed, losing valuable learning time. So the children’s librarians got kids to make reading goals, kept them enjoying reading through the summer, and helped send them back to school with improved reading skills.

Kids these days are pretty lucky—they are often kept busy from dawn to dusk with fun activities. They are at the pool, at summer camp, and traveling with families. Those are all great things. But if you bring them to the library a few times this summer to sign up for summer reading (maybe at the kickoff party June 7), and make it a goal to read a little bit every day, they will not have a hurdle to overcome when school starts up again.

Of course there are other good reasons to read over the summer: so you can spend time with favorite characters, learn about space (our summer reading theme this year) and all sorts of other subjects, and maybe even find a book that is so exciting that you can’t stop reading until you know how it turns out.

Reading is not just for kids, though. Even adults can benefit from taking a break from their devices, stopping doom-scrolling, and luxuriating in some good old-fashioned beach reading or gripping narrative nonfiction. So get signed up for summer reading at the Lincolnwood Library, beginning June 1. Here’s a bonus: reading will be a good thing to do if you need a nice cool place indoors to spend some time away from the endless chirp of the 17-year cicadas. Can’t say that every year!
