This is the time of year when everyone starts talking about making resolutions–coming up with ways to improve our lives, be better people. Your social media fills up with diet ads, exercise promotions, and selfeducation tools. Those are fine in a guilt-inducing sort of way, but those resolutions don’t tend to last very long. Author Mike Rucker urges us instead to resolve to make time for fun in his book The Fun Habit: How the Pursuit of Joy and Wonder Can Change Your Life. He says, “Instead of dedicating daily quality time to fun, we relegate it to once-a-year vacations…The sad reality is that most of us all but abandon fun after early adulthood.” Lincolnwood Reads this year is dedicated to helping all of us devote some time and yes, effort, to having fun. I’ll admit that initially I was a little dubious about focusing on fun during a time when the world can seem especially grim. But Rucker is pretty persuasive about the benefits of being curious, experiencing wonder, and feeding your brain with new information even in serious times. Packed with research, real-life stories, and strategies, The Fun Habit is a surprisingly substantial and practical look at the value of fun. You will not be surprised to hear that I think the Lincolnwood Library offers a lot of opportunities for fun, from cozying up with a new mystery, trying out a new soup recipe, learning another language, or trying out painting. Of course we have lots of books (both print and digital), but we also have programs planned to provide hands-on fun and learning for everyone from babies to seniors. We hope you get your new year off to a fun start by joining us in reading and then trying out The Fun Habit. You’ll find lots more information on pages 8-9. And maybe like me, you will also sign up for a reading challenge as part of your resolution to have more fun. I usually don’t quite make my goal, but for me, it’s fun!

[V] VIRTUAL These programs are offered using Zoom and will be live at their scheduled time. Please include your email address in your registration to receive instructions on how to join the Zoom event.

ONE BOOK •

L INC OL N WOOD

The annual Lincolnwood Reads Reading Program consists of our community coming together to open the same book and close them with a deeper understanding of community, enjoying life, and having fun. Participate in Lincolnwood Reads by reading The Fun Habit by Mike Rucker and attending enriching events. Copies of the book are available to check out at the Library or online on Libby. Discover the latest compelling scientific evidence for the potent and revitalizing value of fun and how to make having fun a habitual and authentic part of your daily life. Doesn’t it seem that the more we seek happiness, the more elusive it becomes? There is an easy fix, hiding in plain sight. Fun is an action you can take here and now, practically anywhere, anytime. Through research and science, we know fun is enormously beneficial to our physical and psychological well-being, yet fun’s absence from our modern lives is striking. Join us for this year’s Lincolnwood Reads to learn how to prioritize fun in your own life.

Want to share The Fun Habit with the children in your family? Participate and enter the prize drawing by checking out books from the themed display in the Youth & Teen Services, and attending programs.
