LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
One of my most strongly-held beliefs is that summer reading should be fun. So if your idea of fun is reading astrophysics or James Joyce, you should read that. If you love Colleen Hoover or George R. R. Martin, you should read that. There is plenty of time during the long winter months for tackling tougher challenges.
Kids especially should have the opportunity to choose their reading, because all through the school year, they have often been told what to read. Now is their chance to read whatever their little hearts desire. Even if you feel like they are stuck and not challenging themselves, they are still reinforcing their reading skills so they don’t lose what they gained from September to mid-June.
Another opportunity for practicing reading skills but not making it an adult-imposed task is listening to books. While listening doesn’t help kids practice their physical skills, audiobooks are great for learning about the elements of a good book — plot, character development, world building, rich language, and so on. Listening counts as reading, and gives them a chance to read books that might be too difficult otherwise. For some kids, that’s a lot of fun.
Keeping it fun is what we are trying to do here at the Lincolnwood Library this summer in our gaming-themed Level Up program. Inside the library, you’ll find a tricky I Spy challenge in the cafe, reading logs where kids collect stickers to dress up their character, and a wide variety of programs. It all kicks off on Friday, June 13 at our annual Summer Reading Party. Keep reading for 15 days, and earn a free Level Up T-shirt!
The way to make summer reading NOT fun is for it to become a lastminute ordeal. One of my worst memories of motherhood is of my secondgrader son reading one of my favorite childhood books, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle. He was literally sobbing over it, because he is a careful reader like his father, so he was way behind on his reading, and he knew he was in danger of missing the class pizza party. It broke my children’s librarian heart to see.
So whether you are 7 or 97, reading this summer will be much more fun if you choose what you want, and if you take a little time every day to read. Cramming it all in to meet a deadline? That is no fun at all.
