It Takes A Team 24 hour care, dedication and teamwork

A

s any parent can tell you, caring for a newborn is tremendous, around the clock feedings, sleepless nights, dirty diapers, baths, laundry and so much more. Now imagine if that baby was a spider monkey and you had never done this before and neither had anyone else in over 30 years. That’s the exact situation our Zookeeper team faced when Tonnie was born right here in the Zoo’s Secret Jungle.

Tonnie at one month old.

Tonnie at 6 months old.

4

Tonnie at 10 months old.

ZooTracks | Lincoln Children’s Zoo

On May 31, 2020 Tonnie was born to mom, Lola through a healthy and positive birth experience. Lola was a great mother but unfortunately, she developed mastitis rendering her unable to nurse Tonnie. Without the proper nourishment, the zookeeper team knew that Tonnie’s health would decline rapidly. The on-site veterinarian staff and dedicated team of zookeepers monitored mother and baby for days, and ultimately made the difficult decision to hand raise Tonnie. And so began the constant care of a baby spider monkey by a team of highly committed Zoo professionals. Zookeepers took rotations sleeping in the Secret Jungle on an air mattress to care for Tonnie through the night, providing up to 12 feedings a

day, baths, cuddles, and enrichment. Although technically separated from the troop, Tonnie’s keepers maintained close proximity to her family troop. Lead keepers Tori Reynolds and Kim Jacobson were diligent in making sure that the bonds between baby and the adult spider monkeys remained strong. Not only did Kim and Tori keep the other spiders monkeys close, but they also mimicked monkey facial expressions, sounds, and behaviors with Tonnie to ensure that she would learn to be a monkey, not a human. Along with her social behaviors, the team created small yet elaborate climbing structures to teach Tonnie to grasp with her prehensile tail, how to swing, and many other innate physical movements. “As we observed her progress, we started to create more complex and challenging climbers for her to hone her climbing, jumping, and running skills. A surprising behavior that she needed to learn was how to play appropriately with her natal group. We observed how the adults played, vocalized, and wrestled and attempted to simulate it as much as we were able to. One of her favorite activities was learning to wrestle and play with keepers.” says zookeeper Kim Jacobson. Once the team felt that Tonnie had mastered these skills, they felt she was ready to rejoin her family. Introductions between Tonnie and the troop began slowly. Without mesh and glass barriers between the group and the baby, it was vital to move forward cautiously to protect the young monkey. Because of the high level of importance placed on family introductions from the beginning, the team was successful in introducing Tonnie to all three of her family members; her mother Lola, father

Carlos, and her aunt Aliena. Aliena was the first adult that we witnessed Tonnie ride along on her back; a natural way that spider monkeys carry maturing infants. Zookeeper Kim says that “Carlos showed the most interest in playing with Tonnie throughout her hand-rearing and we love getting to see them play together on exhibit”. Throughout the last 10 months, the team been slowly introducing soft or cooked fruits and vegetables as well as formulasoaked primate biscuits to supplement her formula feedings. She is finised with formula feedings and eats fruits, veggies, protein, biscuits, specially made primate chow, and lettuce. The team continues to see her weight increase daily. She has since gained five times her weight that was taken when she was one week old and is a healthy and thriving member of her troop. Tonnie is now spending almost the entire day with the adults, but you may still see her separated out for a few individual feedings with her keepers. Tonnie’s birth was incredibly important in the zoo community as Black-headed spider monkeys are critically endangered in the wild. Carlos and Lola were paired up to breed as a part of the AZA Spider Monkey Species Survival Plan that contributes to conservation in the wild. Zookeepers Kim Jacobson and Tori Reynolds are currently in the beginning stages of publishing their own paper with updated hand-reading procedures that will assist other keepers in hand-rearing situations worldwide.

g n i d Fee y z n Fre What does it take to feed the Zoo’s 400 animals?

H

ave you ever wondered what all the animals at the Zoo eat? From the smallest reptile to the largest giraffe, all animals have their very own special diet that helps them get all the nutrients and energy that they need. Some animals, like tigers, cheetahs, and fossa are carnivores and only eat meat. They are predators that hunt for their food in the wild. Here at the Zoo, zookeepers use a variety of enrichment activities to mimic hunting and allow these animals to use their natural instincts. Other animals such as giraffes, tree kangaroos, and tortoises are herbivores and only eat plants. They get their nutrients from fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens. Similar to carnivores, zookeepers use enrichment to allow animals to use their natural foraging skills while the eat. While many animals prefer only plants or meat for their diets, some animals want the best of both worlds and enjoy an omnivore diet. These animals eat all kinds of food including meat, eggs, insects, fruit and other plants.

6

ZooTracks | Lincoln Children’s Zoo

Here at the Zoo, we have over 400 animals that each have their own unique diet. Zookeepers prepare and track the meals for each animal that they care for. They make many different diets each day and gather meat, lettuce, hay, fruit, vegetables, grains, and more. Zookeepers utilize the Zoo’s diet kitchen and keep organized and detailed records to make sure each and every animal receives the correct food at the correct times. Just like animals eat different types of food, they also eat different amounts. Joey, our largest giraffe, eats about 14 pounds of food every day, while the much smaller penguins only eat about 2 pounds of fish eat day. This adds another layer to the diets zookeepers prepare and adds to the importance of being organized and detailed in all food preparation. Be on the look out during your next Zoo visit and you might spot some of the animal’s eating or interacting with their food-based enrichment.

GUEST SERVICES TEAM A DAY IN THE LIFE

H

ours before any guests arrive at Lincoln Children's Zoo, our Guest Services team is hard at work ensuring the Zoo is ready for all the daily visitors. This dedicated team consistently goes above and beyond to make every visit a memorable one for kids of all ages. Shawn Toovey, Director of Guest Experience, starts his day at the Zoo at 7:30 in the morning. Arriving early helps him ensure that all tasks are completed, and his team is ready to face the day. "Our team’s goal each day is to help families create memories that they will carry with them. Through the simple things like a smile, a friendly greeting and keeping our walkways clean, we strive to make each of our Guest’s visit special for them." says Toovey. With over 1,000 guests per day, the Zoo is a busy place and Shawn and the Guest Services team are dedicated to making sure each one of our guests have a safe, fun, and enjoyable visit. Part time Zoo team members are the front-line workers at the Zoo, and they arrive each day at 9:30 am. At 9:45 AM the entire Guest Services team has a morning "huddle" as they call it, a time to share information, highlight happenings at the Zoo that day, and communicate any necessary information. The

huddle participants include 3-15 part-time staff and is led by one of the Zoo's three Guest Services managers. "Huddle is a great opportunity to touch base with the entire Team. We talk about everything happening that day, from field trips, to tours, to attendance projections. We share reminders and updates and talk about goals for the day. Having a Team huddle really helps set the tone for the day, ensuring everyone starts of on a positive note for the day.” Shortly before 10:00 am, the team breaks from huddle, and they are off to their posts. Keeping a Zoo running is no walk in the park! From working the front gates, to driving the train, assisting shoppers in the gift shop, preparing meals in the cafe, or selling thousands of pieces of lettuce for giraffe feeds, this team is no stranger to hard work. Each team member is trained on various positions throughout the Zoo so that they can seamlessly slide in wherever they might be needed any particular day. On a typical day, the last guest services team members leave shortly after 5 pm, and once the manager on duty has cleared the Zoo, the gates are officially closed. Although it is hard work Guest Services team member Ryder Mays says "I like working here because as a kid the days I got to go to the Zoo were the best days ever, so to get to see kids experience that, and be that happy makes me feel happy too."

ARTWORK High school students & animal residents teamed up to create artwork as unique as their artists.

D

o you like to get out all your art supplies and create a masterpiece? Some of the animals here at the Zoo love to do just that. With a little help from zookeepers, our animal artists enjoy painting with non-toxic washable paint on canvases to create their masterpieces. Zookeepers work to incorporate interesting and challenging activities into the animals’ daily routine. Each animal uses their own special technique to create unique artwork through enrichment activities that were created to enhance their everyday lives. This winter the Zoo teamed up with the Lincoln Public Schools Art and Humanities Focus Program to create our newest animal art series. Students researched each animal and then painted the canvas background. Our animal artists picked it up from there by walking, crawling or slithering across the canvas to finish their one-of-a-kind painting. Purchase a piece of animal artwork and help support the animals who created it! Each masterpiece is as unique as the animal who created it, so if you see something you like, buy it before it’s gone!
