Don’t be your own worst enemy What if I told you that I wanted to lose 10 pounds by the end of March and you believed me? What then if later that week, I invited you to my house and you noticed I kept a lot of cookies in the basket on the counter? You might smile and have a pack or offer to take them to lessen my temptation. What if we went into the bedroom and you saw not one pair of sneakers nestled between my shoes or no other evidence that exercise was a part of my routine? What if when we left the house and went for dinner, I had 2 cans of soda but no water? Would you still believe me? We often say we want something, but our own behavior contradicts what we are saying because often, we are our own worst enemy. We don’t even realize we are sabotaging ourselves, but often times, we are. Here are 5 ways in which we are our own worst enemy: 1. Practicing unhealthy behaviors. We say we want to be healthy and happy but our money is not spent on things that make us healthy or happy and our lifestyle is a blatant contradiction to our words. 2. Highlighting our flaws out of proportion. It’s like we try to say how horrible we are before anyone else can tell us. So we put ourselves down and magnify our shortcomings, instead of just working to improve them. 3. Giving our power away. It’s an act of selfsabotage to allow someone to make all the deci11

sions on our behalf and let others who do not know what is best for us run our lives. Some of the people we give our power to are making a mess of their own lives, yet we allow them full control over ours. 4. Not trusting our instincts. How could you be so at war with yourself, that you do not even listen to your own inner voice that tells you what is best for you and reminds you what you need? 5. Allowing fear to rule your life. Fear cripples us and leaves us frozen instead of fluid and moving. Yes, you will feel some hesitance and even some major gut-wrenching fear at the thought of leaving a job, but if it’s poisoning your soul or making you sick, then you have to act in your best interest in spite of the fear. You might have fallen into these patterns over time, but it’s time to change the end game. Start by recognizing that you are a special human being who deserves to be happy and to have good things happen to you. Treat yourself with the tenderness and respect you deserve; listen to your inner voice and remember you teach people how to treat you. You might not get it right the first time, but with practice and daily reminders and affirmations, you can truly stop the self-sabotage and instead propel yourself into happiness. Send your comments to askkoren@live.com. I love hearing from you. Vol. 31, 43 / Feb 13 - Feb 19, 2020

Devious Minds Chapter 16 It’s been a month since Theresa introduced Jonathan to her friends. They seemed to take to him well and he to them for the few times they already hung out, but you know messy Patrick had to go and dig some dirt nobody told him to dig. Meanwhile, home at Patrick and Theresa’s apartment: “Aye lady I got some bad news for you,” Patrick said while sitting on the couch across from Theresa as she watched TV. “What! You’re moving out?” Theresa jokingly asked while her eyes were still glued to the picture box in front of her. “Girl you wish!” Patrick huffed then laughed as he got up and dropped a manilla envelope on Theresa’s lap before he sitting back down. Pausing her movie, she opened the envelope and examined the contents. It wasn’t until she got to a picture of Jonathan hugging a lady that she began to feel uneasy. “You know me, I will dig up dirt on everyone. I hope he’s not more than a friend because that information doesn’t look good, but I heard he’s actually separated.” Patrick told her. “Where did you find these?” Theresa asked him. “Girl, you know I can’t sell out my sources but there are legit photos and info in that folder,” he explained. “I know he’s married,” Theresa finally confessed. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

“Oh, go on with your bad self,” Patrick told said, “I see you’re living a thug life not caring about the other chick.” “It’s not like that, he told and showed me the court documents stating he is separated from his wife.” “Girl he did all that just to prove to a friend, are y’all more than you letting on?” Patrick asked her? “We could’ve been but being married backed me down before I even gave it a thought,” Theresa told him as she continued looking through the contents of the envelope. Patrick had photos and documents on Jonathan but the picture that stunned her was not the only one of the couple, there were more. She tried to share as little detail as could with Patrick, but she was honest because he was capable of finding out the truth and she didn’t want him poking around her business too much – he talked too much. After closing up the file, she put back on the movie but her mind wasn’t at ease because of her recent discovery about Jonathan. She was now contemplating whether to call it off without an explanation or with one. She was so confused and didn’t know what to do. How could she come to grips with the fact that she was sleeping with her boss’ husband now that she found out that Elizabeth is Jonathan’s wife because of the pictures in that folder? 12

Black and Blue In Black and Blue, a rookie cop in New Orleans captures the shooting of a young drug dealer on her body cam. After she realises that the murder was committed by corrupt cops, she teams up with the only person from the community who’s willing to help her when she finds herself on the run from both the vengeful criminals and the lawmen who desperately want to destroy the incriminating footage. The movie opens with the rookie cop Alicia (Naomie Harris) and her partner Kevin (Reid Scott) passing through the old neighbourhood she grew up in. There, she sees some familiar faces that are not so welcoming to her. Once they get back to the station to clock out of their shift, Kevin is scheduled to do the night shift with Deacon Brown (James Moses Black). Since it is a special night for him, Alicia decides she will cover for him because she has no other plans. On patrol with Deacon Brown, he receives a call on his cell phone and tells Alicia they have to leave the restaurant they are at. At the destination, she is told to stay in the car until he comes back, Astonishingly, someone then tries to break into a car while she is sitting in the police cruiser? After she chases the thief away, she goes back to the cruiser when she suddenly hears shots coming from inside the building and calls for backup before checking it out. 13

Inside the building she sees officers Deacon Brown, Terry Malone (Frank Grillo) and Smitty ( Beau Knapp), talking to someone who appears to be pleading for his life while there are a few others already dead on the ground. Trigger happy Smitty shoots Alicia and she falls but she gets up before they can get her. While running for her life, she tries knocking on a few doors with everyone turning their backs on her because they don’t want to get involved in police drama. She then sees two fellow officers and starts going towards them for help until she realizes they too are also working for the corrupt cops. Alicia ends up back at a grocery store owned by her former friend Mouse (Tyrese Gibson) who is hesitant to help her but eventually does. While at Mouse’s apartment, his nephew pulls a gun on Alicia as she and Mouse learn that Darius (Mike Colter), the drug lord in the area and uncle of one of the slain boys has put a hit on Alicia because Malone had lied and said she killed his nephew. Now on the run from law enforcement as well as street criminals, Alicia decides to stop running and try to seek out Darius. Will Darius kill her or try to help her? What becomes of the corrupt cops? Black and Blue can be streamed on iTunes. Vol. 31, 43 / Feb 13 - Feb 19, 2020

Basketball players begin transitioning into referee’s role Several basketball players are transitioning into a new role as referees, a process that began with a clinic being conducted by FIBA certified referee, Norval Young. Dalvern Blyden said he’s getting to the point where he doesn’t think he’ll be able to play the game anymore. “This for me is like a transition from player to referee and giving back to the game,” he said. “That’s pretty much it for me.” Blyden said the course was informative and Norval passed on his knowledge about things he knew and things Blyden wasn’t sure about, were made much clearer. The course he said, has been very helpful and they have just broken the ice on what a referee goes through. “Honestly, it’s not as easy as guys might look at it as referees running up and down the court blowing a whistle, there’s a lot of work to it,” he noted. “It’s not a walk in the park. You have to respect a referee when you see them out there trying their best to officiate these games, it’s not an easy task.” Kameron Young said he had an interest in learning the fundamentals and the rules. “I think a lot of us are confused when it comes to certain calls and certain interpretations of the rules, so it was good to have a certified referee come in and explain a lot of the calls and the interpretation for us,” Young said. “I was very happy for that. When Boss (Eustace Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

Freeman) said they’d be having this clinic, he told a lot of us who currently play pickup ball now and then and he signed me up.” As a group he said they learned a lot and Norval’s presentation of the rules and their interpretation was well explained. He said because of television, many persons have NBA rules stuck in their head but there are a lot of similarities between NBA and FIBA rules as well as a lot of differences. “We learned that a lot of the FIBA rules have nothing to do with the NBA and the NBA rules have nothing to do with the FIBA rules as they are two separate entities,” he noted. “In recent years, both organizations have been trying to compromise and make the game similar because a lot of NBA players play in FIBA events. So, they have been trying to make the rules in sync.” Norval said the course went well and all participants were basically first timers. They were enthusiastic, asked a lot of questions they weren’t sure of and they participated in every aspect of the training course—fitness, theory, classroom and interactive. “They did a wonderful job and it was great to see these young potential referees showing the interest that they did,” he said. “We had a predetermined schedule of events and things were tailored to the participants. This is an ongoing process and I see no end to it.” 14
