This Week’s Feature Story

Jumping Through Hoops The summer camp starts on September 12th and continues through to December 8th from 3:30pm to 5pm, Monday through Thursday. The focus is on learning the requisite skills of basketball while making sure young people also pay attention to their schoolwork, as it is these two elements working together that will be expected of the athlete of tomorrow. The camp involves two days of basketball training and two days of academic tutoring, with some of the best primary and high school teachers on the islands. A full bus service is also provided on both islands to get the kids around safely, from school to camp and then back home. These camps provide important contacts and are a way to expose the wealth of talent that exists here in the VI, and to push those individuals who show promise forward for local leagues and national teams. Thanks to kind donations from numerous organizations the camp is offered FREE of charge. Please email bvihoopitup@gmail.com or call Karl Scatliffe on 541-7541 or Jehree Clarke on 540-3000. But jump to it as spaces are limited. — Jan Critchley

The “BVI Hoop It Up Foundation” is calling out for all BVI youngsters from ages five to sixteen to take part in their second “Books and Basketball After School Camp,” which will be taking place on both Tortola and Virgin Gorda. The Foundation is the brainchild of Steve Parillon, and who better to lead the team. Steve grew up in Lower Estate and started playing the game in high school before playing professional basketball for many international teams for six years before retiring in December 2010. Steve is now fully involved with the Foundation as he is deeply committed to ensuring that young Virgin Islanders get the same opportunities that he did. He also intends to bring in coaches from colleges and universities from the US to scout local talent during the series of camps.

The Lincoln Lawyer As the name of the movie implies, Mick Haller (Mathew McConaughey), an unorthodox LA lawyer who specializes in representing lowlife criminals, works out of the back of his Lincoln Continental. He has a driver, who doubles as a bodyguard, an ex-wife, Maggie, (played by Marisa Tomei), and a young daughter he adores but spends too little time with. A prosecuting attorney, Maggie is feisty in and out of court, but an attraction between the couple remains, and they try their best to raise a child despite their

Mick also gets more than he bargained for when he is hired to represent Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillipe), a rich kid from Beverly Hills, who is accused of beating up a woman that he picked up in a flashy LA club. Race Track Madness I was more than a little envious of my friend Jean-Eric when he told me that, as a retirement present, his colleagues had given him a gift certificate for the nearby Nogaro racetrack. The gift was not to watch a race, but to get suited up and drive a racecar around the track! To any car-racing enthusiast, such as myself, this was the holy grail – the chance to get into a racing machine and go full tilt around the track. JeanEric shared my enthusiasm, but I noticed a tinge of nervousness in his smile as he asked if I would go

Anderson Cooper’s New Gig: Daytime Talk Show Host Anderson Cooper consistently excels at the ageold journalists’ credo to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Besides CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 and his contributions to CBS’ 60 Minutes, there will be more of him on TV with a syndicated daytime talk show, Anderson, premiering Monday, Sept. 12. “I’ve been reporting for 20 years,” Cooper says. “I am 44. I really wanted to get more out of life. I want to laugh more every day and live more every day. It’s not enough to just survive. I have to thrive. I spend a lot of time just trying to make a living. I wanted to figure out how to get more out of every day. What I like the most about work is meeting people in a disaster or conflict and to give them a voice.” Seven weeks before the show’s launch, Cooper talked for a long time, without publicists and producers, with Zap2it. The show could feature celebrities, and Cooper isn’t above reality show fascinations; he loves the Real Housewives. Yet hosting a talk show doesn’t mean he’s abandoning serious reporting. His most recent trip to Somalia, shedding light on children starving to death, proves he remains a committed journalist. At the heart of Anderson is “giving voice to people who have faced difficulties,” he says. “I started traveling in the wake of my brother’s suicide.” To juggle his different gigs, Anderson plans to shoot two episodes of the talk show three days a week. This would still allow him to cover breaking news, such as his trips to Egypt, Japan and Joplin, Mo.

The guileless manner Anderson has one on one is what comes across on TV. When he dissolved into a fit of giggles midAugust while reading an item containing 21 puns about French actor Gerard Depardieu urinating on a plane, Cooper immediately put himself on that segment of his show, “RidicuList.” “It is a little embarrassing because I giggle like a 13-year-old girl meeting Justin Bieber,” he says. It’s precisely that attitude that will continue to win viewers. He seems constitutionally incapable of putting on airs, though his mother was designer and socialite Gloria Vanderbilt and his dad was writer Wyatt Cooper. “If it works, great, if it doesn’t ...,” his voice trails off. “I have a staff of people who want it to work.” As he talks he bats around potential topics for the show. “We can do an entire audience of kids who have been affected (by bullying),” he says. “There are just a lot of unfair things that happen.” Cooper doesn’t try to hype himself. “There is a high failure rate,” with daytime talk shows, he says. “It may very well fail. I am a big believer in playing into the things that you fear the most. As an adult, I try not to worry. From when I was 10, I had a furrowed brow. And my dad used to say, ‘Enjoy, enjoy.’ Obviously, I want this to work, and it can be a great life-enhancing thing for viewers. And if it fails, I’ll still have my job at CNN, unless I really fail and they get rid of me, too.” He considers that he could wait tables again, though he admits to being awful at it when he was a teen. He worked at an Upper East Side restaurant and served some of his mom’s friends. They didn’t recognize him when he was a waiter. And that taught him about having no voice. 13
