News from the RCE Office Sharon Palos - Estate Manager

Dear Residents, So, the end of 2021 is not far away. This has been an extremely trying year for each and everyone of us. We can only but hope that going forward the year ahead will be 1000% times better for all. We have lost loved ones, and we would like to take this opportunity to send our deepest heartfelt condolences to those families. People have lost businesses; people have lost jobs and all we can hope for going forward for all our residents that the New Year will be bright and prosperous for all. We once again thank our residents for all their patience and co-operation during this time with all the rules and regulations that needed to be implemented.

Halloween We had another successful Halloween this year. Our prize winners were Thing 1 and 2. We will continue with this annually as the kids seems to have a lot of fun.

And we not stopping there………… Keeping within the Christmas spirit we are doing the following:

Ruimsig Country Estate HO-HO-HOME

This year we ask residents (who celebrate Christmas) to decorate their homes to create a festive feel all around the estate. A Santa, a reindeer or even a string of lights on your outside tree/garden fu us to see from the street! How else will Santa find our homes if we aren’t Merry and Bright? Our main entrance lights will be going up soon! We are looking forward to the display! •5•

after, fed, and given adequate natural shelter from predators. We have got assistance from Berario Bunnies who have assisted us in this project.

Bunny Project Recently a group of ladies got together to go on a mission with saving our bunnies. A bit of background, there are a lot of bunnies inside the estate and unfortunately, they are being run over, being injured, and left to suffer and are breeding rapidly. It’s a few of us left to see this suffering ad fit the vet bills, even if it’s for euthanasia. Their current home on plot 42 is about to be excavated and made ready for a development. Our aim is to catch and sterilise as many of these little bunnies as possible and re-release them into our park 300. Not only will they be able to continue living freely but they will be looked

Our first catching session happened on Sunday and we were able to catch 10 bunnies, two of which were injured. Yesterday we re-released the lactating mommies who were sterilised. Berario Bunnies charges R400 for each male sterilisation and R510 for females. Our aim is to help as many bunnies as possible. Park 300 will be a park where you and your children can enjoy the bunnies in their natural environment. What we need from you is any donations towards the sterilisation and your help during the catching process and donations of fencing, poles and or items for them to hide from predators. Please get involved, get some fresh air, and meet the bunnies and great people too. We will send out a notification as to when the next bunny catching session is taking place.

Security From a security aspect we are glad to report that we have had no incidents during this time and APCAN has been awesome in making sure that we are all kept safe. The New Year is bringing along some very exciting changes in security. We will be moving forward with technology. This will be including cameras inside the Estate, RIFD entrance control, LPR cameras and much more. Updates to follow. With the festive season approaching we also ask that people remain vigilant, test your alarms, and make sure it is in working order if you are going away. If you are away over this period, please make sure that your pets are also taken care of. It is important to remember that even though you are in an Estate do not have a false sense of security. Crime can happen ANYWHERE.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. If you are travelling, please travel safely and remain safe. Wishes from the Board of Directors and your Estate Manager, •7•

The way we talk to our children becomes their

Inner Voice

Every morning, it starts over. We get a chance to shape the lives of our children. The way that we talk to our children becomes their inner voice. Think about when your kids make a poor decision… they spill milk on their homework (when they aren’t supposed to be eating or drinking near it), they break your favourite picture frame (when they shouldn’t be throwing a ball in the house), they don’t clean up their room, they track mud into the house… each thing after you’ve told them time and time again what to do. continue on page 12

Your first reaction “Ugh! I wish that you would have listened to me… this would not have happened!” Last year, I started trying something different. I looked at the ACTION, not my kids. Instead of reacting with anger, we reacted with empathy. I stopped yelling, stop reprimanding, but instead, just gave the consequence with sincere empathy. Yes, our words resonate with our children. Remind your kids that you love them, no matter what they’ve done.

These four words will change the way that you parent: “I LOVE YOU AND…” You are telling them that you love them even though they have done something that you aren’t happy about. That doesn’t change how much you love them. When our kids do something that I disapprove of, I often start with “I love you so much. Your choice today made me really sad, and it wasn’t what I expected from you” or I will discipline them and talk to them afterward. We should be telling our kids every day, “I love you all the time. I love you when I am happy or sad. I love you when I am excited or angry. I love you when you make good choices and bad choices. I love you when you are home or away” … (the list goes on & on).

You can’t take it back I was a teacher and one time I had a conference with a student and his family. When I told his parents about his declining reading score, he looked right at his son and said “Do you even try?” and looked back at me and said, “Sometimes, he can be so dumb.”

I was dumbfounded What on earth is going on here?! I used that opportunity to build up the child and explain his many, many strengths. The point is that you can’t take it back. You can’t take back words like “lazy” or “dumb” or “thoughtless” or “mean” – once they are out there, they stay out there. Your kids continue to hear these words in their heads. Instead of “You are so lazy. Get up and help me!” Try “You work so hard. Can you give me a hand? It will get done so much faster.” I can (almost) guarantee that it will work 100% better than going the negative route. Instead of tearing them down, you are building them up and achieving the same end result: they are helping you.

Island Breeze Combine two shots of raspberry-flavoured vodka, a dash of fresh lemon juice and a shot each of sugar syrup, raspberry purée and passion fruit purée in a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Shake, pour into a tall glass with the ice, top up with apple and orange juice and garnish with half a passion fruit.

Mai Tai Pour one-and-a-half-shots of rum and halfshots each of Amaretto, Triple Sec and apricot liqueur, a dash of grenadine and a squeeze of fresh lime into a cocktail shaker filled with crushed ice. Shake well, pour into a tall glass and top up with pineapple and orange juice. Serve with a pineapple slice.

Passion Fruit and Vanilla Martini Pour one-and-a-half shots of vanilla vodka, a shot of vanilla-infused sugar syrup and two shots of passion fruit purée into a mixer and shake with ice. Pour through a strainer into a martini glass and garnish with half a passion fruit sprinkled with icing sugar.

Some tips from the bartender… Make sugar syrup by dissolving one cup of sugar in three cups of water over a low heat. Keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved and has a syrupy consistency. To make vanilla-infused syrup, scrape the seeds of a vanilla pod into the syrup or add a teaspoon of vanilla extract. To muddle a cocktail, use a pestle or spoon to gently mash ingredients together to release their flavours. A shot is 25 ml.

Indigenous

inspiration for Christmas Ref: www.lifeisagarden.co.za

Go natural with an indigenous Christmas tree decorated with homemade accessories such as brightly painted seedpods and festive ribbons. If you’re thinking of buying a new Christmas tree this year, why not opt for a live tree rather than an artificial one? Even better, choose an indigenous tree and plant it in the garden afterwards. Or you could leave it in its container and, once the festive season is over, place the pot in a sunny spot in the garden. Make sure you look after it throughout the year by feeding and watering it, and next December it will be ready for use again. continue on page 22

• 21 •

Indigenous

inspiration for Christmas continued from page 21

These are a few of the popular indigenous trees suitable for use as a Christmas tree:

Outeniqua yellowwood (Podocarpus falcatus) It is an evergreen tree which has a conical ‘Christmas tree’ shape when young. The tiny dark green foliage is attractive. This indigenous tree can be planted permanently in a container as it is slow growing. Place the container in a shady or semi shady position and keep moist. In the garden it grows to 12m.

Yellowwood (Podocarpus henkelli) Has shiny, drooping, dark-green leaves and a neat appearance. It is frost hardy and grows slowly so can be used as a Christmas tree again and again. Place the container in either an east-facing or south-facing area as it prefers damp, cool and shady conditions. When planted in the garden it grows to 10m. • 22 •

Real yellowwood (Podocarpus latifolius) Also an excellent choice as a Christmas tree as it is evergreen with pretty blue-green foliage. These frost hardy trees with their stunning blue-green foliage can be grown in containers for many years and are therefore useful in smaller gardens. Place the container in a cool position and keep moist. In a garden they reach a height of 10m – plant in partial shade.

Here are some ideas:  Dry an aloe flower and spray it silver and enhance with a cone and ribbon.  Make a twig wreath and decorate with berries and leaves.

Go natural Once you have selected your tree, make some beautiful decorations out of natural materials from your garden. Many seedpods and seeds look glorious if given a coat of spraypaint and enhanced with sequins, ribbons or glitter. You could also use berries, fruit and cones. If you’re not that industrious, choose from the many beautiful beaded and other accessories available from garden centres, markets and informal traders.

 Tie a few cinnamon sticks with a pretty ribbon.  The star-like seed heads of lion’s ear (Leonotis leonurus) can be spray-painted silver or gold and hung on the tree with a ribbon.  Add some glitter to the velvety pod of the camel thorn acacia (Acacia erioloba).  The attractive pods of the candle thorn acacia (Acacia hebeclada) look great painted gold and decorated with sequins.  The winged seedpods of the large-fruited bush willow (Combretum zeyheri) are a favourite tree decoration as they are large and striking.
