How to Cope With Market Volatility
he financial markets always go through periods of instability, and we may see more of that now, given concerns about tariffs, inflation and the economy. As an investor, how can you deal with this volatility?
Some investors try to take advantage of market ups and downs by attempting to follow the ageold advice to “buy low and sell high” — that is, they seek to buy stocks when they feel prices have bottomed out and they sell stocks when they think the market has reached a high point. In theory, this is a great idea, but in practice, it’s essentially impossible, because no one can really predict market highs and lows.
Rather than trying to anticipate highs and lows, your best strategy for coping with the price fluctuations of the financial markets is to diversify your investment portfolio by owning a mix of stocks, bonds and other types of securities. Different types of financial assets can move in different directions at any given time — so, for example, stocks may be up while bonds are down, or vice versa. If you only owned one of these types of assets, and the market for that asset class was down, your portfolio could take a bigger hit than if you owned a variety of asset types.
And you can further diversify within individual asset categories. Stocks can be domestic or international, large-company or small-company — and these groupings can also move in different directions at the same time, depending on various market forces. As for bonds, they too don’t always move in a uniform direction, or at least with the same intensity — for instance, when interest rates rise, bond prices tend to fall, but longer-term bonds may fall more than shorter-term ones, which are closer to maturity with fewer interest payments
remaining. Conversely, when rates are falling, longer-term bonds may be more attractive because they lock in higher yields for a longer time. Consequently, one diversification technique for bonds is to build a “ladder” containing bonds of varying maturities.
Some investments, by their nature, are already somewhat diversified. A mutual fund can contain dozens, or even hundreds, of stocks, or a mixture of stocks and bonds. And different mutual funds may have different investment objectives — some focus more on growth, while others are more income-oriented — so, further diversification can be achieved by owning a mix of funds.
Furthermore, some investors achieve even greater diversification by owning alternative investments, such as real estate, commodities and cryptocurrencies, although these vehicles themselves are often more volatile than those in more traditional investment categories.
While a diversified portfolio is important for every investor, your exact level of diversification — the percentages of your portfolio devoted to stocks, bonds and other securities — will depend on your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and financial goals. You may want to consult with a financial professional about creating the diversified investment mix that’s right for your needs.
Ultimately, while diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can help you reduce some of the risks associated with investing and better prepare you to deal with the inevitable volatility of the financial markets — two key benefits that can help you over the many years you’ll spend as an investor.
Murphy Cabinet Bed
The natural choice for serious skincare begins with intention—and in Sandpoint, Idaho, that intention is brought to life by Genee’ Jo. A second-generation, European-trained Licensed Master Aesthetician with over two decades of experience, Genee’ has created Su Gee’ Skin Care (pronounced Su Jhay) as a space where healing, beauty, and presence intersect.
Raised in the industry by her mother, also an aesthetician, Genee’ carries a legacy of care into every treatment. Her work blends time-tested European methods with a deeply personalized approach, helping women—especially those over 40— reconnect with their skin and reclaim their radiance. At Su Gee’, skincare is more than a routine; it’s a restorative experience rooted in calm, confidence, and soulful transformation.
Q&A
Q.You bring years of experience to your practice—what inspired you to pursue a career in skincare, and how has your journey evolved?
A. My skincare journey was born from a deep love of nurturing and a fascination with the skin’s ability to tell a story—of stress, health, joy, and time. I became licensed in 2003, but even before that, I was drawn to the quiet power of healing touch. Over the years, my practice has evolved from simply treating the surface to honoring the whole person. Especially for women over 40, I’ve seen skincare become a way to reclaim confidence, presence, and peace. My work now blends science, soul, and skin literacy.
Q.You describe yourself as "European trained." Could you explain what this training entails and how you incorporate these European techniques into your treatments?
A. European skincare is about respecting the skin’s natural rhythm. My training focuses on hands-on techniques, thorough analysis, and treating the skin holistically, not aggressively. I use massage, manual exfoliation, and strategic product layering to support the skin barrier and circulation. Every treatment is intentional and rooted in longterm skin vitality, not quick fixes.
Q.What unique approach or philosophy sets Su Gee’ Skin Care apart from other skincare providers?
A. At Su Gee’ Skin Care, I create sacred pauses, moments to stop and simply be. My philosophy is rooted in restoration, not just rejuvenation. Clients are not rushed through cookie-cutter treatments—they receive personalized care that addresses their unique skin story. It's skin therapy with soul, blending European technique, botanical support, and mindful touch.
Q.Why is it important for clients to understand the difference between standard skincare treatments and the specialized, personalized services you offer?
A. Standard treatments follow a set script, but skin isn’t one-sizefits-all. My approach is guided by real-time skin observation and each client’s unique goals. It’s thoughtful, responsive care—not just routine. Clients deserve that level of personalization and education. It’s the difference between basic upkeep and a treatment that feels like a restorative, intentional gift.
Q.What aspects of your work do you find most fulfilling, and how do you hope to impact the lives of your clients?
A. Seeing someone light up when they see their reflection—calmer, softer, and more confident—is everything to me. It’s more than skincare; it’s about helping people reconnect with themselves. My goal with every treatment is to offer more than a facial. I want each client to experience a moment of peace—a deep exhale from the busyness of life, a full-body reset, and a gentle reminder that their beauty is still blooming, even in seasons of stress or change. When someone leaves my space feeling renewed, grounded, and radiant, that’s the impact I hope to have.
Q. As someone immersed in advanced skincare techniques, how do you stay ahead of industry trends to ensure your clients receive the most effective and innovative treatments?
A. I stay curious and committed to learning. That means investing time in advanced training, diving into the latest ingredient research, and maintaining close connections with trusted European and holistic educators. These relationships keep me informed and grounded, so I don’t get swept up in fleeting hype. I integrate advanced techniques like skin tightening and lifting into a holistic framework that supports the skin’s natural function. It’s a gentle yet effective approach that delivers visible results without compromising long-term skin health. Every trend is filtered through a lens of discernment—if it doesn’t honor the skin’s natural rhythms or benefit my clients over time, I won’t use it. I always ask, “Will this truly serve my clients long-term?” That question guides every choice I make.
Q.If you could recommend just one essential skincare practice everyone should incorporate into their daily routine, what would it be and why?
A. Gentle, intentional cleansing. It sounds simple, but it’s foundational—and often overlooked. Cleansing removes buildup and stress from the skin while preparing it to receive hydration and nourishment. But beyond function, when done with care and mindfulness, it becomes a ritual—a small, powerful act of self-love. Those few minutes at the beginning or end of your day can ground you, reset your energy, and reconnect you to your body. In a world that moves so fast, five minutes of intentional care can truly shift your whole day.
Q.Sandpoint is close to your heart. What initially attracted you to this community, and how does your business contribute to its local culture?
A. Sandpoint’s natural beauty and community spirit immediately spoke to me. There’s a quiet magic here—a rhythm that invites you to slow down and breathe. My spa reflects that. I support local artisans, participate in wellness events, and create space where people can unplug, reconnect, and feel truly seen.

PEDALING TOWARD LITERACY
CYCLISTS ,
CAUSE THAT CHA
"Give
a kid a book, and you change the world. In a way, even the universe.”
–Neil deGrasse Tyson
Originally inspired by Brad Williams, a Libby, Montanian native and long-time Sandpoint resident, one local nonprofit has truly taken Tyson’s sentiment to heart. The CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo, which began in 2008 as a fundraiser for Ready for Kindergarten, an early childhood literacy program of the Panhandle Alliance for Education, is a road and gravel bike ride that crosses over Idaho and Montana state lines in honor of Brad Williams own journey between the two. Over the years, it has evolved from approximately 70 riders on the original 150-road ride route to now boasting an average of 500 riders yearly, each participating in numerous road and gravel routes. It has now become a central annual event in our community.
In early summer, cyclists mount up and swarm the streets and traverse through breathtaking, mountainous landscapes all the way between Sandpoint, Idaho, through Troy, Montana, bringing awareness to the need for educational support to our communities, and over the course of time has raised over $1 million in support of our local education. The CHAFE 150, which stands for Cycle Hard for Education (and is a fitting double-entendre for participants!), was initially conceived by Brad Williams as a means to combine his love for cycling with his passion for philanthropy with a goal to improve educational opportunities in our region. The race has grown steadily over the years, drawing professional and amateur riders, all united by a common mission–improving literacy for local youth.
In 2013, the Sandpoint Rotary Club took over the ride and continues championing Brad Williams’ original cause. The Rotary Club of Sandpoint is a member of Rotary International, a group of over 1.4 million people across the globe that are bound together by the common idea of “Service Above Self.” The club’s involvement has brought a higher level of organization, fundraising, and outreach, allowing them the ability to fund a greater amount of projects and reach more students. These initiatives have included after-school reading programs, specialized programs for students on the autism spectrum, and partnerships with Book Trust, which helps provide books to children in need. The ride also benefits a multitude of other youth
programs in our area, such as scholarships and leadership development for our high school students.
Research has proven that early childhood literacy is key to longterm academic success. Because of the direct support of our vibrant community through fundraisers like the CHAFE 150, Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) students have far exceeded the national average for reading scores, a clear example of the effectiveness and enduring impact the CHAFE 150 has had on our school district. This upcoming June 14th, the CHAFE 150’s 17th annual ride will benefit LPOSD’s new initiative, “Every Student Graduates a Reader.” This program uses a comprehensive approach to ensure children attain their highest reading potential, focusing on a blend of early intervention and individualized learning. Mel Dick, a coordinator for the CHAFE 150 and Sandpoint Rotarian, shares about the initiative: “Beginning with fall literacy screenings, those found to need extra support undergo diagnostic assessments to pinpoint specific areas for improvement. Teachers are trained in evidence-based practices such as phonics and comprehension, ensuring they can provide effective reading instruction. This layered strategy helps all students, not just those struggling with reading, and sets them on a path toward academic success and future readiness.” The program also emphasizes parental involvement, providing families with resources to support learning at home. This holistic approach helps students achieve better academic outcomes, fostering a culture of literacy and lifelong learning.
Testimonials from several local young students showcase the impact that these literacy programs have had in our area and how they will help them succeed in their future academics:
“Now I can read like the other kids in my class.” (3rd grader)
“In fifth grade, I didn’t understand how to read, and I didn’t like to try. Now that I have learned Vowel Town and the special spelling rules, I like to read. I am paying more attention now and not getting sidetracked because I couldn’t follow along. I even like coming to school now!” (6th grader)
“In younger grades, I really didn’t like reading because it was hard. Now that I have learned the sounds of Vowel Town, I feel good about my reading. I have learned blends, beginning/middle/ending sounds, and even tricky endings like -tion. These are things I didn’t know before Pathways.” (6th grader)
“I am taking the skills that I have learned and am applying them in my other classes. I am now comfortable reading out loud off the board in class.” (8th grader)
“I am able to slow down and understand more of what I read. I’m not rushing through like I used to do.” (8th grader)
These testimonials are powerful examples of how early intervention and a strong literacy foundation can positively affect a child’s educational journey. Beyond academic achievements, these programs help students build confidence and self-esteem, which are critical elements to nurturing academic potential. The direct link between the CHAFE 150 fundraising efforts and these stories highlights the tangible benefits of community involvement. It is inspiring to see that, year after year, our local youth are gaining the skills and confidence they need to excel in the classroom and beyond.
The CHAFE 150 has over six routes of different lengths on roads and gravel, including a Family Fun Ride, with three starting locations, four different start times, and seven rest stops along the way. Whether you are a hard-core rider or casually coasting on an e-bike, the ride provides an accessible route for all levels of experience. The range of route options ensures that cyclists of every skill level can participate, making it an inclusive event for riders and families alike. From the scenic roads that wind through the mountains to the challenging gravel sections, the CHAFE 150 showcases the natural beauty of Northern Idaho and Western Montana. The ride’s starting locations in Sandpoint, Clark Fork, and Troy allow for diverse route choices, giving participants the chance to choose their challenge. The addition of the Family Fun Ride is especially important, as it encourages young families to get involved in the event, promoting a culture of fitness and philanthropic engagement in future generations.
An after-party at City Beach Park in Sandpoint is open to the entire community, rider or not, and features food, a beer and wine garden, and activities for children. This celebration is a fun way for the whole community to come together after the ride, whether they’ve been pedaling or cheering from the sidelines. “Support for the ride over the years has been outstanding,” says Mel, noting that this year’s event has over 115 sponsors and 120 volunteers. The generous contributions from local businesses, organizations, and volunteers help ensure the event’s success year after year. The event's ever-growing popularity means there are always opportunities to get involved, either by riding, volunteering, or offering financial support to keep the race alive and its positive impact on education.
Volunteers play a key role in making the event run smoothly, assisting with registration, manning rest stops, and helping with logistics. For anyone who wants to get involved, there are multiple ways to contribute, from signing up as a rider to donating to the cause or helping organize the event. Every contribution, big or small, plays a role in ensuring that students in the Lake Pend Oreille School District have the resources they need to continue to top the national reading charts.
“The ride has made a difference in the lives of thousands of students over the years,” Mel says, and there is certainly no end to that road in sight, so saddle up and get involved!
BACKYARD GRILLING in
Build a space ready for summer days
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
Barbecue season is about more than just food—it’s about creating a space where family and friends can gather, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. Some people prefer casual cookouts, while others love perfecting slow-smoked feasts. No matter your style, your outdoor cooking area should reflect how you like entertaining and make the experience easy and enjoyable. A well-designed space invites people to linger long after the meal is over. Here are five different approaches to designing the ultimate backyard barbecue setup.
1. THE TRADITIONALIST
For the Traditionalist, keeping it simple never goes out of style. A sturdy charcoal grill, a classic picnic table, and plenty of space for lawn games set the tone. A traditional barbecue space focuses on the essentials: great food, comfortable seating, and a welcoming atmosphere that brings people together naturally. A rustic wood table, overhead string lights, and a cooler filled with ice-cold drinks are key features. The Traditionalist knows you don't need fancy gadgets to host a memorable gathering—just good food and good company.
Must-have: A heavy-duty charcoal grill and a signature homemade BBQ sauce.
2. THE ENTERTAINER
The Entertainer turns a backyard gathering into a full experience. Built-in grills, beverage stations, and comfortable lounge areas are key. Good lighting, easy drink access, and a flexible seating setup ensure guests feel at home when they arrive. Music, conversation, and a relaxed environment all play a part. An entertainer’s space often includes multiple zones—a grilling station, a dining area, and a spot for casual lounging. Details like an outdoor bar cart, self-serve coolers, and a built-in sound system help create a setting where people naturally want to gather and stay.
Must-have: A bar area with seating and a ready-to-go playlist.
3. THE EXPLORER
The Explorer treats outdoor cooking as an evolving project. Smokers, campfire grills, and cast-iron cookware are often in the mix. Menus change with the seasons, featuring fresh garden vegetables, wild-caught fish, or slow-cooked roasts over open flame. New techniques are part of the fun, from experimenting with different smoking woods to mastering open-fire cooking. Explorer spaces often feel a little rustic, blending natural wood, stone surfaces, and open-air setups that offer flexibility and creativity.
Must-have: A smoker or a fire pit grill and a well-stocked spice collection.
4. THE GOURMET
The Gourmet treats every outdoor meal like a special event. A thoughtfully designed kitchen setup with stainless steel appliances, marble counters, and top-quality tools makes it easy to prepare restaurant-quality dishes outdoors. Meals are carefully plated, ingredients are fresh and local, and presentation matters as much as flavor. In a Gourmet’s backyard, you’ll often find prep sinks, warming drawers, wine coolers, woodfired pizza ovens, and ample counter space for assembling elaborate meals. The layout feels polished but still connected to the outdoors, blending a sense of luxury with the ease of open-air dining.
Must-have: A pizza oven or a professional-grade grill with multiple cooking zones.
5. THE MINIMALIST
The Minimalist values simplicity and functionality. A sleek gas grill, a modern dining table, and a few carefully selected accessories create a clean, uncluttered space that's easy to maintain and enjoy. Every piece serves a purpose, and the layout is designed for straightforward, relaxed entertaining. Planters with fresh herbs, neutral color palettes, and streamlined outdoor lighting create a peaceful setting that focuses on good food and conversation.
Must-have: A reliable gas grill and low-maintenance, comfortable seating.
No matter which approach fits best, a few essentials always make a difference. Durable materials, weather-resistant furniture, and thoughtful lighting extend the life and enjoyment of any outdoor cooking area. Look for teak, powder-coated aluminum, or resin wicker furniture that can stand up to Sandpoint’s changing seasons. Choose outdoorrated lighting fixtures, and consider layering lights with a mix of overhead string lights, pathway lighting, and table lanterns to create a warm, welcoming feel.
Shade structures like pergolas, umbrellas, or retractable awnings are important additions, especially during bright summer days. A covered cooking station protects both your
CUSTOMER ORIENTED BOOKING PORTAL
equipment and your comfort when grilling under changing skies. Fire pits, patio heaters, and outdoor fireplaces help extend the use of your backyard into cooler evenings.
Maintenance matters just as much as the initial setup. Regular cleaning, covering your grill when not in use, and seasonal inspections of your furniture and fixtures prepare the space for any gathering. Wiping down surfaces, replacing worn cushions, and inspecting lighting or cooking equipment help maintain the atmosphere and functionality all year.
Creating the ideal outdoor cooking area isn’t about following a set formula. It's about designing a space that feels natural for your lifestyle. Grilling fresh-caught trout after a morning on Lake Pend Oreille, hosting laid-back Saturday dinners, or experimenting with new recipes becomes even better when the setting fits your style.
The essentials are good food, a comfortable atmosphere, and time spent outside with family and friends. A little planning, regular upkeep, and a personal touch help turn any backyard barbecue area into a place for making lasting memories.
FARE Idaho is proud to bring its signature Field to Fork event to Sandpoint for the first time on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Hosted at the University of Idaho’s Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center, this one-day trade fair celebrates North Idaho’s independent food economy by building bridges between the people who grow, prepare, sell, and support local food.
Free and open to the public, Field to Fork Sandpoint invites farmers, ranchers, chefs, food producers, retailers, and community members to gather for a day of education, inspiration, and relationship-building. It’s a chance to meet the people behind the region’s food systems face-toface and explore how working together can strengthen local sourcing and sustainable practices.
The setting—an active organic agriculture center tucked in the beauty of North Idaho—is as meaningful as the mission. Attendees can explore curated booths featuring independent food and beverage producers across the region, participate in live tastings, and connect through roundtable discussions covering real-time challenges and solutions in Idaho’s food landscape.
At 1 pm, a special Buyer Hour kicks off, giving chefs, distributors, institutional purchasers, and retailers dedicated time to engage directly with producers. Whether sourcing pasture-raised meats, seasonal produce, craft beverages, or artisan goods, buyers can build direct relationships that promote transparency and resilience in the supply chain.
“This event is about more than just great food—it’s about connection, commerce, and community,” says Tammie Halcomb, Executive Director of FARE Idaho. “We’re honored to bring Field to Fork to Sandpoint and celebrate the incredible work being done in our independent food and beverage industries.”
As the day winds down in the orchard, the celebration continues with the Field to Fork Dinner. This separately ticketed culinary experience brings the day’s mission to life on the plate. Hosted beneath the apple trees at the Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center, this open-air dinner features a thoughtfully crafted menu with ingredients sourced directly from regional producers.
With long tables set among the trees, guests are invited to enjoy a shared meal that reflects the diversity and richness of North Idaho’s food culture. From fresh vegetables and grass-fed meats to local cheeses, wines, and handcrafted desserts, every course tells a story of connection—between the land, the farmer, the chef, and the community.
More than a meal, the Field to Fork Dinner is an experience rooted in appreciation. It honors the hardworking hands behind the food and offers a moment to slow down, gather, and celebrate what it means to eat locally and live well.
Seating is limited, and advance ticket purchase is required by June 25, 2025. This exclusive evening is expected to sell out quickly, and for good reason—it’s a rare opportunity to dine under the stars with the people who bring food to life in North Idaho.
FARE Idaho’s Field to Fork Sandpoint is a one-of-a-kind event that reflects the heart of the region’s independent food community. Producers, buyers, and food lovers alike will find a meaningful way to connect, collaborate, and contribute to a stronger, more sustainable local food economy.
Vendor registration, sponsorship opportunities, and Field to Fork Dinner tickets are now available.

MARKET REPORT
Luxury Waterfront Properties in Sandpoint – Availability, Pricing, and Desirability
Waterfront homes along Lake Pend Oreille remain among Sandpoint’s most coveted properties. Inventory is limited, especially in prime areas like Lakeshore Drive, Bottle Bay, Dover Bay, and the Hope Peninsula. Prices for luxury waterfront homes typically start around $2 million and can exceed $8 million for exceptional estates. Demand remains strong, fueled by buyers seeking year-round recreation, privacy, and stunning lake and mountain views. With Sandpoint’s growing reputation as a four-season destination, waterfront properties continue to command premium prices. Low inventory and high desirability contribute to a competitive market, making waterfront ownership a rare and valuable opportunity.

PICNIC DAY PERFECTION
THE TASTE OF SUMMER, THE HEART OF COMMUNITY
By June in North Idaho, spring mostly surrenders to summer. The lake shimmers under warm skies, and the creeks, though gentler now, flow strong and pure. It’s picnic season—finally.
Here we see friends decked out for long-awaited fun outdoors. Their picnic basket is a little upscale, with most ranging from wicker baskets to used flour sacks. Of course, a rifle is always handy.
Friends and families gathered lakeside with baskets full of homemade treats: cold fried chicken, thick sandwiches with homemade bread, lemonade in glass jars, and cookies or fresh pie if fruit cooperated. Kids waded in the creek or splashed on
the beach, came back soaked, and went right back in.
Organized picnics by churches or civic groups promised endless coffee (as long as you brought your own cup) and ice cream, cone provided. Of course, some in the group could play music, bringing dancing and singing to the fun.
June was for sunshine, grass stains, and shared meals with neighbors. The air was soft, no longer sharp with spring chill, and the breeze carried laughter across the water.
Food was part of it, sure—but the real magic was the camaraderie. By the lake, near the creek, June was about slowing down and being together.
