“As a first-time home buyer, I was so intimidated by the process, as you probably are if you are reading this. I’m here to tell you not to worry. Get in touch with Northwest Mortgage Services. Our loan officer, Abel Hernandez, was fantastic. He made sure my wife and I were informed every step of the way, and was very responsive to my calls and questions. I was seeking a VA Loan, so I had a few extra concerns on requirements and things to consider, but Abel and his team are extremely experienced in this aspect as well. The bottom line is they care about what they do, and who they are doing it for. The only thing I would have done differently is calling them sooner.” - James Santos

our Lives

we couldn’t live without; those who love us, support us, and help us overcome obstacles we face—especially the past two years when everyone’s world was turned upside down. As our everyday lives are filled with obligations, we may not always remember to take the time to reach out to—and thank—those we hold dear to us, and share a simple, heartfelt “I love you.” For many, Mom may be the first person to come to mind. This is the woman who nurtured us, showing unconditional love. She read to us, bandaged and kissed our scrapes, tucked us in at night, and remained a constant in our lives from day one. For some, it may have been another woman in their lives who filled this role, whether it be a grandmother, an aunt or a dear family friend. Mother’s Day is a day to not just celebrate mothers but those women who served and sacrificed to fulfill our needs and took great care in seeing us to adulthood—though their love never waivers as our lives continue and we create families of our own.

in

We follow up celebrating Mom with a celebration and acknowledgment of our fathers; those strong male role models who continually support us, praise us, teach us, while complementing their partner in raising independent, self-sufficient, honorable adults. Whether it was Dad, Grandad or Uncle who filled this role, or that coach or teacher who holds a significant place in your life, a kind gesture and sharing of your gratefulness means more to these men than you can ever know. A sincere thank you to all of those men and women who continue to show up every day to help raise caring, compassionate children who will one day lead our communities—and our country. And may we not forget to remember and honor those who fought to create a better life, and world, for us all, this Memorial Day.

When daydreaming about your new and improved outdoor space that both enhances your day-

to-day living environment while adding value to your home, what comes to mind? Are you hosting friends and family around a fire pit in your backyard under a starry sky, or are you sitting comfortably in a rocking chair or in a hot tub in a semi-enclosed space (away from the elements), surrounded by elevated wood platforms, stairs, railings, a grill and an awning or add-on roof overhead? If you find yourself dreaming more about the former, you might want to invest in building yourself a patio. If you’re dreaming about the latter for your space and aren’t afraid to invest your time and hard-earned cash into your build, a deck might be for you. When contemplating this important question, one must first think about cost versus value of the build, along with the time and effort your build might take. A typical deck under 200 square feet can average between $3,000 and $14,000 depending on the complexity of the design. There is a 76 percent return on investment for a wooden deck on average, higher than all indoor home renovations. On the other hand, a typical patio build is often much less expensive but adds value to your home. A patio can also get more complicated and expensive depending on how level the ground is where you want to build. So, still not sure if you would rather build a deck or patio? The following list of pros and cons for both types of projects may help you to decide: The pros of adding a deck: • Decks are popular outdoor living spaces for homeowners who enjoy hosting, grilling and relaxing. Building a deck can add a higher resale value to your home. Financially, they can be a great investment and will boost property value. • A deck is ideal for building on flat or uneven terrain. They can be installed on most types of land and can add stability to your home. • A deck is easily customizable and is comfortable in the heat, with awnings and other shading opportunities protecting you from the elements. 20

think ... cost vs. value • Since most decks are built higher off the ground, a deck offers up the the possibility of adding better views from your home.

• You can keep some items up and away from wildlife by placing them on the deck. Cons to building a deck: • A deck, depending on the type and weight of material used, often requires more maintenance. Traditional decks are made of wood, and they are usually heavy. Decks can also be made from composite materials, which require less maintenance than wood decks. • A deck built without a solid foundation can become unstable over time. If a deck built by the previous owner of your home wasn’t properly maintained, the wood may have rotted, nails may be exposed and joints may be loose. • Building a deck can be expensive. The national average cost to install a new deck is $7,696, but the typical range is $4,160 to $11,257. Professional decking companies typically charge between $15 and $35 a square foot for an average-size deck. While price depends on the types of materials used in your build, decks are usually expensive with the average cost of $30 per square foot of high-end decking material. • For every deck build, it’s important to water seal and protect your deck with different stains and sealers to keep your deck in pristine condition. Consider deck joist tape, 22

|

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL may/june 2022

a clear waterproofing wood-protecting sealant, liquid rubber, coil stock (for metal), or old motor oil to protect your joists. Decks often need to be power washed, stained and weather-sealed to be protected from the elements. This will most likely need to occur every couple of years. Decks often have short lifespans, requiring a bit more tender love and care than some are willing to provide. • Homeowners may need a permit from the town or city, prior to building, with possible fees and a waiting period. This can be a simple or lengthy process depending on where you live. The pros of building a patio: • Patios are generally less expensive. Installing a patio flush to the ground can cost much less than a deck. It’s roughly $5 a square foot. Concrete is usually the least expensive option. • Patios are much more easily maintained. While you may choose to seal your patio from the elements, it’s not necessary. Concrete, pavers, marble and stone materials are extremely durable. • A quality patio build allows for flexibility in design, often allowing for more privacy. Proper landscaping can increase this privacy.

A Q U A L I T Y PAT I O B U I L D A L L O W S F O R FLEXIBILITY IN DESIGN.

• Installing a patio typically does not require a building permit or inspection. The cons of building a patio: • Patios are not designed to be built on uneven terrain. They are better suited for flatter spaces, and the cost for creating a level foundation is very high. • There is more of a risk of patio cracking if the ground under the concrete was not properly prepared. Cracking is also likely in areas of extreme temperatures and adverse weather. • There is an easier chance of people slipping on a patio. In colder areas, ice can easily form on a patio’s surface and raise the risk of falling. Also, water on a patio can have the same effect. • When a patio is exposed to harsh weather, it can be stained by nearly every element including mud, mildew and other natural environmental factors like leaves or grass. Pristine patios require some upkeep with frequent cleaning. • Patios may require more intensive construction depending on type of land or ground movement needed, or added features like gazebos, pools or spas. Whether you decide to build a patio or deck, make sure that it’s right for you and your home. Also, make sure to take proper precautions to ensure that your build is safe. It may be a good idea to invest in property insurance to make sure you are covered in the event of an incident.

Sustainable Resources Six simple tips for greener living by RACHEL KELLY

Caring for our environment goes both ways. When we care for our surroundings we thrive from an environment that returns that care in abundance. When we are responsible with our resources, we will always have what we need. It can be overwhelming, within our current circumstances, to know exactly how to be responsible with our resources. The problem can seem too big. We do have to live after all, and we would preferably like to live in comfort. This means that we use resources. We are a valuable part of the environment, and so it stands to reason that we would also use the environment’s resources. The question is how to do so responsibly? Taking what we need and giving back what we don’t? When talking about sustainability, it all adds up. Every step, every bit, counts. At times, our decisions have positive global consequences. Especially when our daily decisions are a normal part of the everyday way of living life. Here are a few steps to make your home and energy use count. 26 26

| |

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL may/june 2022 GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL may/june 2022

Rethink Lighting There’s no reason to reduce the amount of lighting that you have or are used to. Rethinking how you get it though reduces your energy usage while making a more pleasant environment. Additional windows in closed spaces is the most obvious renovation but is not always possible. However, the use of LED light bulbs is incredibly inexpensive and saves money every time you turn on the switch. Another easy change is installing dimmer switches in heavily used areas for customizable lighting. There are other slight modifications too, such as solar-charging outdoor lighting (they turn on automatically!) or the placement of tea lights in dark hallways.

T h i n k Te m p e r a t u re The largest use of energy in any home is usually heating and cooling. Switching how we think of temperature can reduce our energy use and bring down that energy bill. It would be great if everyone could utilize solar (sun) or turbine (water) power, however, that’s not always accessible. The easiest way to bring down costs is proper insulation and ventilation. So, this means updated windows and vents, and added insulation in the walls. Simple inexpensive installations such as a dormer fan put ventilation to work for you by moving air. This only costs a few hundred dollars but saves you several times that every year.

27

I n d o o r Wa t e r It’s difficult to use less water, especially if you have a family. In the past, each family member would wash in the same water to limit the number of times one individual would have to re-heat the water. I think we’d all like to avoid that extreme. Simple ways to be more sustainable with our indoor water use is to install a faucet filter to cut down on water bottles. There are also shower heads and faucet heads that can be installed that reduce water usage, as well as the low-cost installation of a dual-flush conversion kit for the toilets. Reduce rather than reuse is the strategy for indoor water use.

O u t d o o r Wa t e r We use a lot of water to keep our homes looking nice, and a manicured look doesn’t have to be sacrificed for the sake of “living green.” An overhaul of our yards to greenery that resembles our environment would be the logical step, but such a change requires time and money. An easy sustainable step would be the re-use of water that we all already possess. A rain barrel can collect water from drains and can be filled with a simple filtration system to recycle gray water. While the water from the rain barrel isn’t drinkable, it is usable in the yard and garden. 28

Aw a re n e s s This may seem like a simple concept, but awareness of where our products come from and the kind of lifestyle we live can lead to global change. Simple things like recycling plastic wrap through local services, or cutting down on the use of plastic wrap all together by using foil, sticky paper or bees wrap. Changes like the willingness to buy clothing from thrift stores cuts down on waste from an industry that causes entire cities to suffer from toxic pollution. These small changes pay off in global benefits and are an easy way to make lasting change. All those small steps really do add up.

From Baby Boomers to Gen Z H o m e b u y e r s b r o k e n do w n b y generation

e continue to have inventory shortages in real estate markets nationwide, and people continuously ask, “Who is buying all of these homes?” Here is our answer broken down by generation.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL may/june 2022

Let’s start off by talking about the “Baby Boomers.” A Baby Boomer was born between 1946 and 1964. They have dominated the buying pool for the last two decades. During The Great Recession (2008-2009) the “Boomers” were the majority able to purchase. They were downsizing and moving to all one level or getting rid of it all together to enjoy their second home. They were able to capitalize on the decreasing prices and buy with cash. Many of the Boomers are now trading in for condos or just staying put and “aging in place.” Although an important part of our economy, they have not been the one talked about in this buying frenzy of late. The generation dominating conversation, and the first generation to compete with the Boomers in size, is the “Millennials.” Millennials have surpassed the Boomer population and have now begun to dominate the buying pool. Millennials are those born from 1981 through 1996. Most of them are now first-time homebuyers. Living in a tech-heavy location, the Millennials are doing well financially. Many of their entry-level jobs start in the six figures. Six-figure incomes plus 3 percent interest rates, and they are ready to invest in real estate. Pair this largest generation and a backlog of new construction (COVID restrictions), and there aren’t enough homes to house these anxious first-time home buyers. While the Millennials are the driving force in today’s buying pool, we must not forget “Generation X.” Gen X was born between 1965 and 1980. There are about 65 million Gen Xers in the U.S., according to the Pew Research Center. That makes the generation smaller than both the Baby Boomers (more than 71 million people) and the Millennials (more than 72 million people).

Many of the Boomers are now trading in for condos or just staying put and “aging in place.” The group is in its prime earning and home buying years, meaning it’s a force to be$826,703 reckoned with. Generation X dominates the present, and that means understanding them is a vital part of making sense of the housing market. The housing collapse of 2007 and 2008 remains a major chapter in their story, although their net worth has since recovered and by 2016 had surpassed pre-recession highs. According to NAR (National Association of REALTORS), 37 percent of Gen X households make between$826,703 $85,000 $826,703 and $150,000 per year. Another 17 percent make more than $200,000. Gen Xers$4,850,000 are now late in their careers and in the prime of their earning lives. Gen X is not the biggest generation in the U.S., they’re not the most talked about, but they have been investing in real estate longer than the Millennials and have more liquid funds than the Boomers, allowing them to win more often in the real estate frenzy. They fought their way back out of the Great Recession and are some of the savviest in today’s real estate market.

omestead Community H e h T

Supports Foster Children It takes a village to raise a child By R a c h e l K e l l y

W

hen Sue Braaten and Colleen Bond founded the Homestead Community, there were a lot of different directions from which they drew their inspiration. Sue had adopted a child and Colleen was a foster parent. Both had experience in advocating for children and in nonprofits/community work. Both had an abundance of compassion for children. However, when asked about her inspiration for the founding of the Homestead Community, Sue Braaten thought of one child: “Kayla. I can tell you her name now. Her name was Kayla. She moved 19 times within the system. I just thought to myself, ‘There’s got to be another way.’” It turns out that there is. When a foster child enters the foster system, they are often moved from one house to the next, their things (if they have any) in a trash bag. Many foster children are dealing with a lot of trauma, understandably so. They usually come from unsavory environments for which they are separated from their parents. As such, they aren’t always sure how to deal with those emotions. Their needs are greater than that of the average child; which any parent knows are already extensive. This painful adjustment can often be too much for one family, and so a lot of foster children rotate from home to home. This rotation can add to their trauma, especially when they go back home only to end up again within the foster system. If they are fortunate enough to have an advocate who volunteers their time, as Sue Braaten still does, they have an ally who stays with them as they move from house to house, from social worker to social worker, and from one person to the next. In a world that constantly rotates,

in an overloaded system that offers little solace, a child advocate offers a lifeline. A place of rest. Much like the Homestead Community. The Homestead Community was founded 14 years ago in an effort to provide a sense of home and normalcy for children touched by the foster care system. The result of this effort is the purchase and founding of the JJ House by the Homestead Community. The JJ House has five bedrooms in the Hilltop Neighborhood of Tacoma. The family who lives in the JJ House fosters the children who come under their care with the support of the greater Homestead Community. This means that the Homestead Community is there for the day-to-day struggles of caring for children touched by the foster care system, making the job of fostering easier. It truly does take a village to

raise a child, and that is especially true when that child has additional needs. The Homestead Community acts as that village. They are there for the big and little things; from diapers to shoes. Volunteers show up to read stories and celebrate birthdays. There’s holidays and family dinners. There is love. There is stability. There is a home. Nobody has to move 19 times. Nobody has to feel alone. This means that the family renting the JJ House (at a prorated rate) from the Homestead Community can foster several children at once. This also means that once in the JJ House, a child can leave and then return if their new living situation turns out to not be as permanent as they hoped. As long as the family that lives in the JJ home continues to actively foster children, they are welcome to continue to live there. Thus far, the home has supported two foster families and many children over its sevenGIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL may/june 2022 |

year operation. In that time, there have been so many memories and so many lives touched. “There are so many things we are able to do because of the JJ House. We can give a home to foster kids (up to six at a time), keep sibling sets together, have fun themed birthday parties for each of them, Easter egg hunts, and then there’s kiddos unwrapping all the gifts that are donated to them Christmas morning. I think my favorite thing is doing everyday life with these kiddos in a home we wouldn’t be able to have without the homestead,” says Jenny Jones, the foster mom of the JJ House. The Homestead Community is giving the gift of joy through support. The Homestead Community works with the state of Washington to fill in the gaps. They advocate and consistently connect with children as individuals, listening to their needs and meeting them where they’re at. The Homestead Community also partners with local agencies to provide additional resources, particularly a safe and loving environment for youth touched by foster care. Beyond the JJ House, the Homestead Community also supports the greater foster family and community through advocating for resources. They do diaper drives, formula drives, provide suitcases for foster children, coordinate donations, gather clothing, and so much more. The Homestead Community really is a village that is focused on founding a foundation of love. As resources become available, the Homestead hopes to found many more houses. fter 23 years in the teaching profession, Amy Waage was accustomed to instruction in the concepts of math, writing, reading and social studies—but Google Drive and Schoology … not so much. Like her peers across the state and much of the nation, Amy’s classroom went to remote learning at the height of the pandemic, and with it came a new set of challenges even for the most experienced educators. “How was I going to be an effective teacher without being in person with my students?” Amy recalled asking herself. “I had to change my mindset, get busy, and dive into professional development opportunities. I, myself, became a student.” One who always has her students’ best interests in mind, Amy challenged herself to become the best online educator she could. She learned the new systems and instructional techniques while overcoming her own challenges. While she and the majority of her peers would likely not wish to experience fully remote learning again, she is thankful for how the experience opened her eyes and even improved her relationships with her students. “Through the online teaching adventure, my most valued experiences were the positive connections and relationships built with students and their families; the partnership with parents as a part of our online classroom strongly aided in the academic achievement and emotional well-being for the children,” she stated.

“Through the online teaching adventure, my most valued experiences were the positive connections and relationships built with students and their families.” Amy is thankful to be back in class with her third-graders, watching them take on new challenges and learn not just new concepts but more about their own selves and what they can achieve. “I find my curious, energetic, honest students as the most rewarding part of my job. I love providing new challenges and the opportunity to encourage and guide them to success.”

ustin Hansen enjoys a good challenge. The Peninsula High School senior competed hard on both the basketball and football teams all four years of school. In the classroom he took several Advanced Placement classes, and in after-school activities, he’s an active participant in DECA—a competitive program designed to teach high school students to become leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. When he’s not busy with school and sports, he enjoys the natural surroundings he’s grown up in. “I love pretty much every hobby that has to do with being outside: snowboarding, wakeboarding, running, snowmobiling, dirt bike riding. I just love being active and seeing new things,” he stated. Some of Austin’s favorite subjects in school include science and math. “It is very interesting to me to learn the formulas that solve difficult problems. I like being able to

break down the mystery behind complicated things,” he said. Austin says he’s had some really great teachers who have been a big influence on him and how his future will likely shape out. “Mr. Newton taught me so much in class and is always there any time I need to talk to someone. Mrs. Balera really helped inspire my love of science my freshman year. She made a really challenging class fun.” On Sundays, Austin enjoys taking his grandmother to church. That will become a little more difficult come fall when he enrolls in college, where he plans on joining an Air Force ROTC program. After completing a four-year degree, he wants to join the Air Force and begin training as a pilot. “I am interested in anything that has to do with flying. I am excited about the structure that the Air Force will provide in my life. My long-term goal is to be a commercial pilot. I can’t wait to travel the world and see all the amazing different places and people,” he said.

A standout on the school’s soccer team, Sinead finished her accomplished career this past fall with a South Sound 3A All-League first team honor as well as an All-State selection as a midfielder.

As she prepares for the next phase of her life, Sinead will continue to train and compete in soccer this summer in order to prepare for an even greater level of competition ahead. Over the two-day celebration, there are a variety of family friendly events all ages will enjoy. From the Maritime Parade and Car Show, to the Blessing of the Fleet, as well as the vendors and incredible entertainment, it continues to offer a memorable experience to families year after year. “We are excited to bring back the Maritime Gig Festival as it turns 25 years old,” smiles Miriam Battson, president and CEO of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. “The theme for the parade is ‘Celebration,’ as we welcome the return to our treasured traditions. Our festival sponsors are equally excited to join us this year to celebrate the reopening of the community and look forward to this family friendly event.” As Miriam shares, the festival returns with the Kids Dash on Judson Street, followed by the US Bank Fun Run that starts in front of the Chamber office and travels along Harborview Drive

(to the turning point at the intersection with Peacock Hill). The parade follows the race, and they are staging five emcees along the parade route. After the parade, food and vendor booths open, and entertainment in the Skansie Brothers Park will commence using two stages. You will find the Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Kid’s Fest behind the main stage and full of the fun activities of years past. Be sure to pop into the Net Shed at the park to learn about the community’s fishing heritage. Miriam adds that new this year will be a Drill Down event for area NJROTC units who will be marching in the parade. This event will take place at 12:30pm on Judson Street following the parade. The ROTC units that are marching in the parade will do a drill competition for prize money to benefit their programs. Saturday’s events will conclude with live music by The Shy Boys. Sunday brings the Wheels on the Water Car Show and entertainment in the park. At 1pm, the procession of the Knights of Columbus and priests from St. Nicholas Catholic Church will proceed to the fisherman’s statue at Jerisich Park for the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony—which continues to be a very special component of the festival.

together in the harbor.” “For 52 years, the Knights of Columbus (a Catholic men’s fraternal order) of St. Nicholas Catholic Church have presented the Blessing of the Fleet. This is a means of bringing together the church family, fishing families and the community to celebrate the vital industry that remains in Gig Harbor,” shares Miriam. “Some of the boats go back 100 years and are on their third or fourth generation of operations.” The procession begins at the church and continues down Rosedale to Jerisich Park, where the priest performs a liturgical service and reads the names of individuals lost in the previous fishing season. A bell is rung in their honor. Following the service, the priests and Knights of Columbus head down the dock and board runabout boats to lay wreaths and circle the fleet, sprinkling them with holy water. “It is a beautiful ceremony to observe, as the fishing fleet will be rafted together in the harbor,” adds Miriam. “Many pleasure boats join in the experience as well. If enjoying from the water, please be mindful that the rafted fishing boats only have one boat at anchor, so they will move with the tide.” To close out the festival, there will be an Earth, Wind & Fire tribute band, Kalimba, performing. For those who would like to volunteer to be a parade marshall, assist with vendor arrival and/or setup, or help in the park throughout the weekend, please contact the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce office at 253.851.6865. According to Miriam, they are expecting larger crowds this year, and all volunteers will receive a commemorative T-shirt! “As you can imagine, putting on a festival of this magnitude takes financial support and hundreds of volunteer hours,” states Miriam. “We want to send a thank you to our Commodore Sponsor Kitsap Credit Union and Vice Commodore Sponsors US Bank, Peninsula Light Co., Columbia Bank, City of Gig Harbor and Puget Sound Energy for your continued support for this year’s Festival.” Celebrate our beautiful city surrounded by friends, family and community members the first weekend in June by attending the Maritime Gig Festival. hat does “being green” really mean these days?

You may have heard some of the following catchphrases for energy, water, waste, natureinspired design and small design: water conservation, energy efficiency and retrofits, alternative energy, stormwater infiltration, net positive waste, alternative foundations, advanced building envelopes, regenerative design, Biomimicry, the red list, material transparency, regional healthy materials, indoor air quality (IAQ), accessibility, accessory dwelling units (ADUs and DADUs), urban farming, embodied carbon footprints, living buildings, human-powered living, multimodal transportation and more. If some of these words spark your interest, the easiest way to interpret this jargon will be to go visit green projects. Lucky for us, the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild puts on a tour of green sites every year. The Northwest Green Home Tour provides opportunities for community members to learn about sustainable building techniques and practices from the people walking their sustainable talk; site hosts range from the builders to suppliers to homeowners living it every day. It’s free and self-guided and includes healthy homes remodeled or newly constructed in your neck of the woods; from single-family homes with small to big remodels, new builds of backyard cottages, DADUs, ADUs, Net Zero and Passive houses, co-housing and condos, each project featuring sustainable ways to live in the Pacific Northwest. This year’s sites include: a detached accessory dwelling unit designed and constructed using SIPS panels; a rental unit, designed and permitted as

LOCAL REALTORS HELPING CLIENTS THROUGH CHALLENGING MARKET b y CO L I N A N D E RS O N

A

nyone who has grown up in a special place has quickly come to realize it’s harder and harder to keep a secret these days. The past two years have greatly accelerated many families’ and retirees’ desire to live somewhere with a slower pace of life, and they’ve definitely zeroed in on the communities in the South Sound. While the scenery and recreational opportunities have always driven people to the South Sound, a new swath of residents are moving in due to many other factors. These include purchasing a retirement or vacation home, or real estate investment, and families leaving larger markets because of personal politics or the global pandemic’s impact on the workforce, with many salaried workers now able to work from home. The ability to make major market income while residing in a somewhat more affordable area like the South Sound, where the cost of living is lower, has hugely impacted the local real estate market. With already low inventory and low interest rates, the market has become extremely competitive. “I believe heading into summer, the trends we’ve experienced in the strong sellers market will continue with a majority of homes receiving multiple offers in the first week, and many will sell over list price,” said Jennie Wetter, Owner/Broker at Infinity Real Estate. “It’s challenging and frustrating for buyers having to waive contingencies and agree to pay over appraised values to be successful.” While some people thrive on quick decisions, others have decided to wait out the hectic market before buying or selling. This has created very low inventory, but there are signs that could be changing in the near future. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by .25 percent in March and will likely add another rate hike or two before the year is out. The move is meant to help curb inflation but will also drive up rates on loans, including mortgages. If mortgage rates continue to creep up as forecasted, home prices will eventually stabilize, and more people might look at getting into the market. “Buyers continue to move out of the city and metro market because they have more buying power. They can buy larger homes, on larger lots, oftentimes with views or waterfront, for the same price as the homes they sold in the metro markets,” explained Linda Helm, Managing Broker at Windermere Professional Partners. “The most important thing for many

buyers is space, both interior and land, and a strong internet connection so they can work from home.” Being prepared in this market is a step echoed by seasoned Realtors all throughout the South Sound. With homes selling within a week of listing and multiple offers coming in, buyers need to be ready to be pre-approved, willing to go over asking price, and possibly wave inspections or pay closing costs. Sellers might be wowed at what their current home is worth, but you will still want to maximize your home’s value. While major updates aren’t currently needed in order to sell, a few simple steps can help to maximize your home’s appeal to potential buyers. “We’re in a time where a house that doesn’t sell in the first couple of weeks on market is deemed to ‘have something wrong with it.’ As such, sellers get one shot to create a ‘wow factor’ first impression online and for in-person visits,” said Wetter.

Helm recommends her clients look through the eyes of the potential buyers and make their home as turnkey as possible. “With the shortage of labor and supplies, we help our clients make any necessary repairs or updates so that their home appeals to the largest number of buyers,” she added. When staging a house, two of the most popular features continue to be a beautiful kitchen and a comfortable master bedroom. As one would expect with the remote worker migration, a space for a home office is also tops on many buyers’ priority list. “Homes with land and privacy are coveted. It’s getting harder to find quiet locations due to all the growth in the area, making places without any traffic noise extremely popular,” said Wetter. When it comes to out-of-town buyers or retirees, new construction, move-in ready, and large lots with water views top many priorities. Older buyers are also looking for low maintenance and a home that is easy to navigate. “One other key feature that puts a home at the top

of these buyers’ list is a primary bedroom on the main floor,” explained Helm.

While the thought of selling and finding something you can afford in the local market might seem daunting, it never hurts to contact a professional to assess your situation and provide meaningful advice. This includes lenders, appraisers, real estate agents, insurance companies, home inspectors, property managers and title companies. Each location is unique, and you’ll be relying on local experts to guide you through the process. Although prices seem high for buying homes, your home sale will also likely be higher than it once was. If you put the equity back into your new home, combined with favorable interest rates, buying and selling in this market may not be as challenging as you think. There are numerous factors that can greatly affect a housing market. The South Sound is clearly in a boom, but as we’ve learned in recent times, the boom eventually comes to an end. If you are a current homeowner, you have equity—and likely more buying power than you think. For those looking to make a move or find their first home, it might be a struggle, but being prepared and flexible might just be the ticket to finding your place to call home. “Gig Harbor and the surrounding area is a fantastic place to live—and the word is out. Regardless of our experience in the market, we don’t have a crystal ball to be able to know exactly what’s going to happen,” concludes Wetter. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL may/june 2022 |

hat is barre? If you’ve been curious about the popular workout class that so many credit for their toned muscles, strong core and impressive posture, here’s everything you need to know to feel confident incorporating barre into your fitness routine this summer. Barre-based workouts have gained widespread popularity in studios and gyms across the nation in recent years. Barre has earned a reputation for helping participants achieve impressive results through low-impact (think less stress on the body and joints), targeted movements. Although often performed in a studio (popular studio franchises include Pure Barre, Bar Method, and Barre3, while locally owned barre studios are just as prevalent), barre can even be adopted at home with the right setup and equipment. Combining elements of yoga, aerobics, Pilates, and yes, ballet, barre workouts are designed to serve all fitness levels and promote a long list of health benefits. The format of a barre class will vary by studio but will typically incorporate a sequence designed to strengthen and sculpt the entire body while enhancing core strength, balance and flexibility. Highrepetition exercises and isometric holds are used to work each muscle group to fatigue before moving on to the next group. As more and more fitness studios become entirely dedicated to delivering barrebased workouts, it’s time to dive deeper into what makes these workouts so popular. Barre classes are centered around the balance itself but utilize a selection of additional equipment, including mats, exercise balls, resistance bands and light hand weights. It is not a ballet or dance class—it is designed to accommodate a wide range of athletic backgrounds and all levels of experience. Barre takes a unique approach to strength work that not many other fitness routines can achieve: Bursts of intense movement are alternated with small, muscle-targeting pulses and effective dynamic stretches.

Enhanced Flexibility Like most fitness classes, barre can help its participants maintain a healthy weight and rebuild or maintain strength. What sets barre apart are its small, targeted, repetitive movements designed to achieve noticeable results in less time. Each barre workout requires the simultaneous use of multiple muscle groups and the engagement of the core. The ultra-targeted format of barre workouts often takes participants to the point of feeling a muscular “shake”—the sign that the muscles are working to fatigue. Here are some of the top health benefits associated with incorporating barre into your fitness routine: Enhanced strength - Barre workouts use a combination of light equipment and body weight exercises to bring the element of resistance training within each class. It’s not uncommon for classes to include pushups, squats and lunges—bodyweight exercises known to enhance muscle definition and promote healthy muscle endurance.

Enhanced flexibility - The movements performed within a barre workout can help improve flexibility and range of motion, particularly around the joints. Improved balance and focus - Balance, focus and posture are all enhanced by the small movements within the barre format that require paying close attention to form. Sculpting and toning - Looking to sculpt lean muscle? Exercises performed at the barre can effectively target specific muscle groups, including the muscles that are harder to target in other forms of fitness, within the core, glutes, triceps and shoulders. Ready to sign up for your first in-studio barre class? Many studios will offer an introductory Foundations class, specifically designed to support beginners in getting a feel for the class structure. Check with your local studio to ask about their options for beginners. Pure Barre, for example, offers a free Foundations class to every first-

timer. The Foundations class provides a clear breakdown of form and terminology in a smaller class setting, allowing the instructor to provide more personalized assistance. For your first class in a studio, you’ll simply need comfortable workout attire and a pair of sticky socks (and a water bottle, of course). Sticky socks are grippy on the bottom, creating a necessary traction and anti-slip support throughout the class. Barre studios will typically sell sticky socks or offer a trial pair to use during class, if needed. If you’re looking to try barre at home, apps and online programs like Pure Barre GO and Peloton offer easy-to-follow video content on demand, so you can barre whenever it best fits your schedule. A balance bar itself isn’t required—just find something that offers a similar level of support within your home, like a sturdy chair, rail or ledge. Grab an exercise mat and a pair of light weights or resistance bands, and you’ll be set! In whatever setting you choose, keep in mind that barre is a unique workout that will take time to get used to. Barre’s small, precise movements, commonly cued as “pulses” and core-controlled “tucks,” may not come easily during the first class or two. Don’t get discouraged—the terminology and the form will become more familiar with every class! If you’re looking for a workout that can help build strength, improve your posture and flexibility, strengthen the core, or simply add variety to your fitness routine, it’s time to give barre a try. Its low-impact, adaptable structure makes it an excellent option for all ages and fitness levels. It has even been recommended for prenatal and postnatal women.

64

As an added bonus, barre doesn’t often leave its participants dripping in sweat, so you can easily squeeze it in before work, during a lunch break, or on your way to happy hour!

he current cost of housing, whether buying a new home or renting, can feel like an insurmountable challenge if you are seeking to create two homes in a separation or divorce.

b y F E L I C I A S O L E I L , FA M I LY M E D I ATO R /AT TO R N E Y

The main culprits in this dilemma are the following: 1. One party is unemployed, whether as a stay-at-home parent or early retiree, or due to health reasons. 2. Both parties are employed and able to live comfortably on their combined incomes but will struggle financially on single incomes. 3. Both parties are mid-60s or older and living on a combination of Social Security, investments and pensions after a long-term marriage (referred to lately as the “Gray Divorce”). If the parties own their home with an affordable mortgage for one party, most people consider obtaining a rental for the other party. However, unless a predictable and sufficient stream of income is established, if the party seeking to relocate hasn’t been employed for any length of time, that party will find it virtually impossible to qualify for a lease without a cosigner based solely on future receipt of child support and/or spousal maintenance. If the relocating party is employed, local rental agencies expect income to be two or three times the amount of the anticipated rent, regardless of perhaps having excess cash from a property settlement to help supplement income. Obtaining sufficient qualifying income can be daunting, particularly if a party is returning to employment after a long stretch of being out of the job market. As a result, many couples are opting to remain in the family home together while evolving their intimate partnership into one of

platonic roommates. Key factors to a successful “Living Together Agreement” start from a foundation of mutual respect for each other’s autonomy. Creating boundaries based on defining private living spaces and use of common areas can be achieved. Ground rules with respect to assigning household chores, buying groceries, meals and, most importantly, defining expectations as to visitors such as family, friends, or new dating relationships, should be clearly addressed. If children are still in the home, you can also begin to implement a parenting plan based on the premise of assigning a schedule and identifying who will be the “on-duty parent” for any given time. If your home is child-free and you are post-retirement, you might also consider whether continuing to share your jointly built financial assets and sharing expenses as you age is more beneficial in the long-term if you can figure out an acceptable arrangement to “live separately” together. Whether establishing a routine for co-parenting or continuing to share the financial benefits that a long-term marriage has built, you can create a tolerable environment of sharing a residence if your current financial reality does not yet lend itself to a legal separation or divorce. In particular, mediation can help guide you through constructive discussions of exploring the pros and cons of all possibilities and helping you reach agreement. ou’re beginning to accumulate substantial wealth, but you worry about protecting it from future potential creditors. Whether your concern is for your personal assets or your business, various tools exist to keep your property safe from tax collectors, accident victims, health-care providers, credit card issuers, business creditors, and creditors of others. To insulate your property from such claims, you’ll have to evaluate each tool in terms of your own situation. Remember, no asset protection tool is guaranteed to work, and you may have to adjust your asset protection strategies as your situation or the laws change. Liability insurance is your first and best line of defense. Liability insurance is at the top of any plan for asset protection. You should consider purchasing or increasing umbrella coverage on your homeowners policy. For business-related liability, purchase or increase your liability coverage under your business insurance policy. Generally, the cost of the premiums for this type of coverage is minimal compared to what you might be required to pay under a court judgment should you ever be sued. Certain trusts can preserve trust assets from claims. People have used trusts to protect their assets for generations. The key to using a trust as an asset protection tool is that the trust must be irrevocable and become the owner of your property. Once given away, these assets are no longer yours and are not available to satisfy claims against you. To properly establish an asset protection trust, you must not keep any interest in the trust assets or control over the trust.

Trusts can also protect trust assets from potential creditors of the beneficiaries of the trust. The extent to which a beneficiary’s creditors can reach trust property depends on how much access the beneficiary has to the trust property. The more access the beneficiary has to the trust property, the more access the beneficiary’s creditors will have. Thus, the terms of the trust are critical. There are many types of asset protection trusts, each having its own benefits and drawbacks. These trusts include: • Spendthrift trusts • Discretionary trusts • Support trusts • Personal trusts • Self-settled trusts A word about fraudulent transfers The court will ignore transfers to an asset protection trust if: • A creditor’s claim arose before you made the transfer. • You made the transfer with the intent to defraud a creditor. • You incurred debts without a reasonable expectation of paying them. hysical activity is an important tool for weight loss and overall health, and it is increasingly appreciated that any movement is beneficial, not just dedicated exercise routines. The cumulative amount of energy we use for physical activity other than dedicated exercise is called Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). NEAT often accounts for the largest variation in energy expenditure among individuals and may explain the perception that some people can more easily maintain their weight or are “naturally skinny” despite similar food intake and dedicated exercise.

Unfortunately, the world is engineered in ways that encourage sedentary behavior. In addition to city designs with poor walkability, there are countless labor-saving devices that have replaced the need for physical labor. It is estimated that one-quarter of all adults sit for more than eight hours per day. The impact of these cultural shifts on our health has contributed to the notion that “sitting is the new smoking.” Indeed, prolonged sitting is associated with chronic diseases, decreased functional status, and increased mortality. Research demonstrates that people who sit more have greater body fat than those who are more active. People with obesity tend to sit for two-and-a-quarter more hours per day than lean people with similar professions, economic status, and home environments. Chronic sedentary behavior (sitting, TV viewing, couch time) is associated with increased risk of chronic disease: Accelerated aging Frailty in the elderly Muscle loss/Sarcopenia Arthritis

Blood clots Obesity; weight regain after weight loss Diabetes Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin Resistance Hypertension Abnormal lipids/cholesterol Fatty liver Vascular disease: Heart Disease, Stroke, Peripheral Arterial Disease Heart failure Cancer – breast, colon, endometrial, prostate Osteopenia/Osteoporosis Erectile dysfunction Depression/Anxiety Chronic pain Dementia Chronic diseases are not an inevitable part of aging. Physical activity, especially combined with nutrition and other aspects of health, can prevent, delay, and even reverse these disease processes as well as the effects of aging. Initiating exercise in one’s later years, even after a lifetime of sedentary behavior, has shown benefit, including increased longevity. There are many ways to increase your physical activity without dedicated exercise: - Take the stairs - In parking lots, park further from the building. - Use a standing desk or table. - Go for regular walks. - Schedule walking meetings and phone calls. - Explore your neighborhood on foot. - Live near where you work; work near where you live. - Use a treadmill or exercise bike while watching TV. - Take regular breaks from sitting, e.g. every 20 to 30 minutes. - Take your kids outside. - Do yard work.

S

ince this will be the year you start having an annual eye exam to protect your most important sense, let’s learn one of the diseases that can steal that sense from you—glaucoma. You don’t feel it or know you are going blind when you have it. The dreaded air puff. I wish I could say optometrists got together to come up with a test we could perform on patients and claim it gave us crucial information, when really our sick minds just wanted to torture patients with an innocent test. Alas, the puff of air is a legit test that does not hurt at all but can certainly frighten you. It is used to measure the pressure of the fluid in the eyeball, giving us an idea of your risk for the potentially blinding eye disease glaucoma. You won’t feel this pressure, and the inevitable loss of sight that comes with it happens so slowly you won’t notice it. Really. Fortunately, there are alternative tests that give us identical information. The iCare instrument is one such test. Just a soft tickle to the eyelashes gives me instant results; so easy even a grown man can do it. Patients often ask what their pressures are. I understand the curiosity, but the pressure is just an indicator. Low or normal pressures do not mean you don’t have the disease, as higher pressures don’t mean you do. There are other tests which need to be done to give us the whole picture.

Glaucoma causes loss of the side vision, so we need to assess if any loss has occurred unbeknownst to you. The visual field test checks your peripheral, or side, vision. Look into a “bowl” and press a button when you think you see a point of light. Pretty easy, but tedious, and crucial to determine if any progression is occurring. Not all offices have this at their fingertips. The fanciest test is the OCT, Ocular Coherence Tomography. The test is as easy as a picture, but gives me information below the top surface of the retina to look at the integrity of the layers underneath. Also crucial in assessing damage from glaucoma, and I use it for diabetics, macular degeneration, wrinkles of the retina, and more. Again, not all offices have this advanced equipment to manage potential concerns. I generally don’t break out the latter two tests unless someone has sick eyes, so be grateful if you’ve never had those done. And, as usual, make it your goal to have an eye exam this year for the entire family. I promise it will be (relatively) easy, and we can check your risk of blinding eye diseases. You might meet #gumdropthepig. I am always here for questions or concerns: info@eyecandy-optical.com or 253.432.4303.

WANT TO FEEL MORE ‘ZEST’ IN LIFE? Simple … Move! b y J E N N I F E R “ TA Z ” VA ZQ U E Z

“I

f you are willing to move, your muscles will give you hope. Your brain will orchestrate pleasure. And your entire physiology will adjust to help you find the energy, purpose, and courage to keep going.” - Kelly McGonigal Spring and summer in the PNW brings a sense of renewal and excitement with longer days and more sun. They are also an excellent opportunity to take time for selfcare via movement. Did you know the two virtues (character traits that enable us to flourish in life) that psychologists say are the most highly correlated to our well-being are zest (energy) and hope? And what is one source of zest? Movement! In Kelly McGonigal’s book, “The Joy of Movement,” she says: “People who are regularly active have a stronger sense of purpose, and they experience more gratitude, love and hope … At the most fundamental level, rewarding movement is how your brain and body encourage you to participate in life.” Movement improves our memory, brainpower, mood, performance, confidence, keeps us healthy, and helps us sleep. Startlingly, her research shows the average daily step count to induce feelings of anxiety/depression and decrease our satisfaction with life is 5,649 steps or less! Guess what, the typical American takes only 4,774 steps per day!

The simple act of moving, moderately, for at least 20 minutes a day, increases our heart rate and triggers our body’s natural reward for not giving up. The American Heart Association actually recommends 75 to 150 minutes of aerobic activity, as well as two strengthtraining sessions, per week. How do you go about getting started? Follow these four steps, get curious, and ask yourself: 1. What is your goal/intent? Write it down (you are 42 percent more likely to do it when you do). 2. Ask why (what is the benefit)? 3. What obstacles might get in your way and how can you step around them? 4. Take a micro-action (tiny steps so small it’s easy to do), celebrate the win, and repeat! “Atomic Habits” author James Clear’s research shows if you decided to make just a 1 percent change, daily, for one year, the compound effect would be 37-times better/different than where you are now! Wow!

breezmyer hair sum

With the anticipated arrival of summer heat, it’s time to lock down your look for the season. Finding a hairstyle that can outlast summer temperatures doesn’t have to be complicated—in fact, styling your summer locks can be a breeze with a few trending hairstyles for 2022 that focus on celebrating your hair’s natural texture and beauty. Start with these inspired trends that make summer hair ... a breeze! Breezy, Beachy Texture. This summer, let your natural waves shine. Beachy, textured hair is a summertime staple now more than ever, with 2022 being a year to air-dry and embrace those wavy locks. Highlight your waves with support from key products, including anti-humidity serums or beach wave texturizing sprays. Simple and Sleek. This summer’s take on sleek and simple help make it easy to look pulled together in no time! Opt for a combination of structure and ease with a sleek, high ponytail or a secure topknot. A smooth base and a fresh, high pony takes just a bit of effort but looks effortless! The key products? Light styling creams and hairspray for an all-day stay. Face-Framing Fringe. Layers are in this summer, bringing a cool, laid-back element to any look. Shaggy, face-framing layers are highly versatile to fit the wearer’s face shape and natural texture of the hair. In fact, the ‘70s-inspired shag cut has been brought back into style this year, a versatile look defined by incorporating a ton of layers into textured, tousled movement. (Think: channeling Mick Jagger or 2020’s Taylor Swift.) The modern shag cut is all about embracing the natural shape of your hair, including curls of all levels.

Carefree braids are back in style. Easing into the layered look? Bangs are the perfect gateway to this trend, with endless options on how to best tailor them to your style. Take your pick of asymmetric, side-swept, blunt bags, or soft and subtle to give your look an update while maintaining the hair length you desire. Wispy bangs are especially on-trend this summer—those bangs that effortlessly surround the face to create texture, movement and soft dimension. Use a light amount of styling cream or spray to give your unique layers enough substance and shape to withstand the summer heat! Statement-Making Braids. 2022 is reported to be a big year for braids, and summertime is the perfect season to incorporate them into an easy, low-maintenance style. Braided hair can take many forms that are often versatile enough to be easily dressed up or down. From intricate, detailed cornrows to a head of thicker, longer braids, to small, braided accents throughout your hair, carefree braids are back in style and perfect for keeping the hair contained in the hot weather.

Go sleek with a single, glossy pulled-back braid perfect for keeping your hair off your shoulders and face throughout the summer. This pulled-together look is an easy one to lock in for the day. If you aren’t looking to commit with a full head of braids, start by working a single braid through your existing style to provide just enough accentuation to your look! ‘90s-Inspired Layers. Jennifer Aniston’s signature “Rachel” cut from the ‘90s is back to inspire a new generation, with a little twist: The modern-day “Rachel” takes the hair length above the shoulder and incorporates long, bouncy layers. Blow-drying the ends of the hair with a barrel brush makes it easier to achieve the right amount of volume to achieve this Friends-inspired look. Classic Bobs. Short hair is in this summer, and those who love a breeze on the back of the neck and a classic cut for straight hair can celebrate the return of the bob! The classic bob is this summer’s clear short-hair trend, with a long list of ways to spice it up. This chin-length cut can be cut into a clean, straight line, or incorporate added dimension with a cut slightly longer in the front. Play with parts (middle parts are still trending), added bangs, or step into pixie-cut territory with a length slightly shorter. 78

Just work with your stylist for guidance on what’s best for your face shape. Whatever bob variation you choose, it’s no secret that shorter cuts make summer styling a breeze—so chop away! Fun with Accessories. Maybe this summer your new “do” doesn’t change your actual hair at all. A major statement can be made with simply adding accessories, and right now, hair accessories of all kinds are on trend. 2022 runways saw details like headbands, clips and barrettes enhancing looks with just the right amount of detail. This summer, keep your locks out of your face in style with a trendy clip (the larger, claw-like clips are another trend resurfacing from the ‘90s) or a head scarf for the most effortless hairstyle update! Go Natural. The biggest takeaway from this summer’s hairstyle forecast? Embrace your natural gifts! When planning your summer style, lean into your hair’s natural shape and texture. Whether it’s enhancing your natural curls for an edgy shag cut or a head full of beach waves, or letting finer locks have their moment in a layered cut or bob, natural is the name of the game this summer—roots and grays included! Take the maintenance out of hair prep so you can put that energy toward enjoying the season. Happy styling!

BACK TO THE

BASICS Your ingredient list for healthy skin

T

here are a lot of products out there that promise everything for our skin, from eradicating wrinkles to erasing scars. If we’re worried about it, there’s a cream for it. It can be hard to choose between various expensive

products and their benefits when there’s such a wide variety of methods with such high expectations for success. There are piles of studies out there, but which products have stood the test of time and brought about real results? Our skin is much like our body: It has various complex needs that can be met by a variety of different products. When choosing a product that will work best for our skin, we can remember that our skin needs three basic things: cleansing, hydration and restoration. Here are six products and foods that are trending in the beauty world that are chock full of antioxidants, hydrating oil and restorative nutrients that show promise of doing just that! When caring for our skin, it’s time to get back to the basics.

1

rose oil Rose oil is a long-standing product that has stood the test of time. Also, it smells fantastic. Pure rose oil is derived from rose petals and is full of a long list of benefits that include antibacterial properties. Rose oil contains the antioxidants citronella and geraniol, which prevent the binding of free radicals (atoms that are looking to bind to cells on contact, causing damage). Rose oil aids in the synthesis of vitamin A and contains vitamin C, both nutrients that studies have shown play a part in increasing hydrated skin. Eating foods high in vitamin C, such as rose hips, can reduce damage caused by the sun and increase the production of collagen.

2

Jojoba Oil Jojoba oil grows in hot arid climates known for their bristling heat. It is perhaps because of this that the plant contains high levels of vitamin E and essential fatty acids, which heal and plump the skin respectively. Jojoba oil resembles the protein composition of our skin, so that it is recognized and absorbed by our skin. This allows for the adoption of its full benefits. This also means that the oil does not clog pores and is gentle enough to be applied twice daily as a cleanser and moisturizer. Once the oil is absorbed into the skin, it seals the pores, preventing the entrance of bacteria and free radicals. This is because the oil is actually more of a wax than an oil.

A Home Away from Home A place for community, comradery … and a great round of golf!

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

I

t was 1954 when four gentlemen (Parker Buck, Ed Allen, Bill Bowers and Walter Hogan) gathered for a dinner meeting at the Wollochet Community Club and decided to build a golf course. Another meeting soon ensued in which they discussed their proposal with friends. It was quickly decided to enlist others by selling membership shares of $500 each. The men would sell 127 memberships, and that same year, Artondale Golf & Country Club was incorporated; the course would open in 1961. Artondale Golf & Country Club would change names in 1982 to Gig Harbor Golf & Country Club. It would be renamed once more to what it is known as today—the Gig Harbor Golf Club. You will find Gig Harbor’s best-kept golf secret situated in the tranquil Artondale neighborhood. The member-owned facility offers comradery and togetherness; something you don’t traditionally find at your typical public facilities. “The course was built by hard-working blue-collar fishermen of the ‘50s and ‘60s, and that remains the soul of the property,” says Jake Gregus, Club Director. “You don’t have to look far to find a friend or helping hand in this fun little community.” Golfing members have ownership in the club, providing a unique social, family friendly community of members who take pride in the course and facilities. “Many refer to GHGC as their safe haven, where they are able to unwind from the daily grind of life. GHGC provides a great happy medium between a very inclusive country club and the more casual environment of public golf course experiences,” states Jake. After struggling with membership numbers for years and facing economic shortages, Gig Harbor Golf Club experienced a historic influx of membership applications in response to the pandemic. “The influx of new members, and dues revenue generated by this, has allowed us to invest more in the level of professional staff to meet the service expectations and needs of the membership, along with providing the opportunity to implement many of the long-range capital projects around the course and our facilities,” affirms Kim Titus, Board President. “We hired Jake Gregus as our Club Director in March of 2021 to help set the standard in operations and work with the Board of Trustees to ensure the longevity of GHGC and to bring the amenities and changes that would surely impress new and old members alike,” states Kim. Club members have full access to a quality golf course practice facility, with teaching professionals available to assist members with their game. Offering Men, Women and Junior Programs, they encourage and engage all members of the family to enjoy the game of golf. In addition, GHGC holds a strong social calendar with both golf and non-golf events that attract members of all ages to be able to enjoy the facilities—both inside at the newly updated event space or outside on the patios—both offering incredible views of Mt. Rainier.

“We have a fun, laid-back social atmosphere with plenty of fun social gatherings throughout the season that bring members together,” says Jake. “The members and staff at GHGC do a great job of welcoming the new members and helping them get the information they are seeking.” Both members and staff are excited for the newly remodeled clubhouse, last done in 2011, with continued facility upgrades including flooring, lighting and furniture. The Pro Shop was recently renovated offering an

attractive environment, inclusive of new golf merchandise, clothing and accessories. A golf simulator featuring 700 courses was added for members to practice. When it comes to what members cherish most about being a part of this wonderful club, Jake believes it’s that it reflects the friendliness of the Artondale neighborhood community, and of course, the uniqueness of the course and the solitude of the location—65 acres of forest, wetlands, and the Artondale Creek runs through the property. It is undeniably a beautiful, peaceful, private location. “Being a part of a club is something many cherish for life. It’s where members watch their kids grow up, have graduation parties, and even in some instances get married, maybe even play that under-par round of golf or have their first hole in one,” smiles Jake. “The main benefit is community and friendship for life!” As the Gig Harbor Golf Club is very competitive within the golf club market, membership is by “invitation only,” meaning a submitted application must be sponsored by an existing golfing member. If you have any questions about the Gig Harbor Golf Club, please contact Jake Gregus, Club Director, at director@ghgolfclub.com.

“You don’t have to look far to find a friend or helping hand in this fun little community.” GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL may/june 2022 |

Take a step back in time with a visit to Port Townsend, Washington, one of only three Victorian Seaports on the National Register of Historic Places. The town’s two historic districts are filled with Victorian-era public buildings, businesses and homes. A stroll through the downtown Waterfront District and the residential area on the bluff will have you enthralled with the architectural details of this vibrant port city. Beginning in the spring and lasting through the fall, you will find a variety of festivals and events that celebrate the town’s heritage. From a Victorian Heritage Festival to the annual Wooden Boat Festival, there is something for everyone. The flourishing arts community includes local artists, musicians and creators. You can enjoy the arts through festivals, shows and the many art galleries, or take a class at the Port Townsend School of the Arts at Fort Worden. Enjoy walking through downtown, taking in the many pieces of community art you will find tucked in around the town. Port Townsend sits on the traditional lands of the S’Klallam people who called these lands home for thousands of years. The tribe is now known as the Jamestown Band of Clallam Indians.

Port Townsend has so many great eateries, it is tough to decide where to dine. The Silverwater Café is in an historic building on Taylor Street. The owners David and Allison source their ingredients from local farmers, bakers, craft beverage makers, butchers, mushroom foragers, and those that gather the bounty from the sea. You can taste the love for the local community in their food. The fried fish with its signature dill and lemon batter gained them a loyal following from the days of their fish stand. It remains on the menu to this day. The Grand Marnier Prawns are chilled tempura shrimp drizzled with a Grand Marnier aioli and served over house-made coleslaw. The menu is extensive, and specials are offered each day. For more suggestions, check out “Enjoy Port Townsend.” You’ll find recommended itineraries for foodies and lovers of wine, beer and cider. The full day Farm to Table itinerary will take you out to visit farms then return to Port Townsend to visit eateries specializing in farm-to-table and scratch-made meals. For a true authentic Victorian experience, book your stay at the Old Consulate Inn, which is a stunning National Historic Landmark. Innkeeper Cindy Madsen calls it an adult retreat. From the minute you walk through the gate into the colorful garden surrounding the inn, you will feel the tranquility it is known for and begin to relax. There are lots of nooks and crannies both indoors and outdoors to curl up with a good book. If you have ever wanted to stay in a Victorian tower that many of these older homes have, then book the “Top of the World” suite. It is a quirky room with lots of angles that has been featured in national magazines. The views through five curved-glass windows in the turret sitting room of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains are spectacular. Soak in a claw-footed tub and in the morning enjoy a three-course gourmet breakfast. THE OLD CONSULATE INN OldConsulate.com

A must-do is to visit the Northwest Maritime Center and take a boating or building class. There are such a variety of courses available. Kids will love the boat building class where in the morning they build a model sailboat and then launch it in the afternoon. Adults can make their own standup paddle board among the many options. You can also just enjoy the community space. Grab a coffee from Velocity and stroll out on the dock for views of Port Townsend or watch the kids play on the mini playground. Walk through downtown beginning at the Jefferson Museum of Art and History to learn more about the area. Make sure to pick up the ĉiĉmәhán trail route map, which is a walking, cycling or driving route through Port Townsend that shares the history of 19th century European settlers and the S’Klallam leader they called Chetzemoka. As you walk through town, keep an eye out for the signature red signs. Also look for other historical signs. Each one has QR codes you can scan with your phone for more information. Just outside of town is Fort Worden State Historical Park, which is jammed full of activities. There are multiple museums and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. There are miles of trails that meander through forests and past military bunkers. Connect to the arts with an onsite theater or just stroll the beaches. The fort is a much beloved historical treasure. NORTHWEST MARITIME CENTER NWMaritime.org JEFFERSON MUSEUM OF ART AND HISTORY JCHSMuseum.org FORT WORDEN STATE HISTORICAL PARK FortWorden.org

Make Music in Gig Harbor 21 JUNE

A worldwide celebration of music on the summer solstice By J i l l i a n C h a n d l e r

“M

aking music together enriches the whole community.” A free celebration of music held around the world on June 21, Gig Harbor will once again be a local destination for Make Music Day. Not your typical music festival, Make Music is open to anyone who wants to take part.

United by Music USA rhythm section, Pizza Box Drummers, and anyone who wants to participate and join in along the way (singers, bands, solo artists to full bands, acoustic to electric). Spoken Word and Poetry have been added for the 2022 event.

A&H HIGHLIGHT

“Every kind of musician—young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion—pours onto streets, parks, plazas and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors and strangers,” shares Barbara Hammerman, president/co-founder of of Make Music Day Gig Harbor. And it’s all free and open to the public!

Barbara and Amanda Gresham, with United by Music North America band, had performed for five years in other Make Music Day cities, and wanted to create this festive day in the Gig Harbor area. And they knew that Uptown Gig Harbor would be the perfect place to showcase the first Fest4All Make Music Gig Harbor in 2021. “It allowed us to demonstrate the vision that the community can build together, making music by many people in many places all around the area,” affirms Barbara, adding, “Amanda and I are thrilled to have Uptown Gig Harbor Center as our home base again for this very special community project. Paula Zenobia, Uptown manager, is the perfect partner with our team.” Four stages will be filled with music from noon to 9pm. There will be opening ceremonies including traditional dance by the Puyallup Tribe, Kathyanne Vocal Students, Promenade Parade from stage to stage led by the Gig Harbor Ukulele Allstars,

The entire community is encouraged to attend, as the event is fully participatory and accessible for all! Don’t miss your chance to be part of this day celebrating music. For those interested in participating both on and off stage, email gigharbor@ makemusicday.org. “We aim to have everyone feel uplifted and feeling great from celebrating the longest day of the year through music and with each other,” smiles Rebecca. “This celebration of music is built on collaborative efforts and participation from the full spectrum of the community.” This year they would like to thank Uptown Gig Harbor, Wurlitzer Manor, Make Music Alliance & NAMM Foundation for sponsoring this wonderful community event, though more local sponsors and collaborating organizations and businesses would be greatly appreciated!
