MORTGAGE BROKERS we work on YOUR BEHALF with YOUR GOALS and BEST INTERESTS in mind.

“As a first-time home buyer, I was so intimidated by the process, as you probably are if you are reading this. I’m here to tell you not to worry. Get in touch with Northwest Mortgage Services. Our loan officer, Abel Hernandez, was fantastic. He made sure my wife and I were informed every step of the way, and was very responsive to my calls and questions. I was seeking a VA Loan, so I had a few extra concerns on requirements and things to consider, but Abel and his team are extremely experienced in this aspect as well. The bottom line is they care about what they do, and who they are doing it for. The only thing I would have done differently is calling them sooner.” - James Santos

Summertime.

It seems like it arrives and then is gone all too soon. The long days, the warm air, the outdoor activities and celebrations that abound all throughout town; these are the days when families and friends, young and old, come together to enjoy each other’s company and cherish the time spent together, at a slower pace, while taking in the beautiful Northwest. Picnics in the park, a day out on the water, hiking the local trails, shopping the local farmers markets and attending much-loved community events … the summer months are meant for making memories.

for our youth, while us parents still find ourselves trying to juggle our careers and spend more time with our families. Too bad there’s no summer break for the adults—and for those who do have time off in the summer to enjoy what’s most important, you are blessed. See the summer through the eyes of a child, and make the time to explore and get dirty. Splash in the water. Take a nap. Eat watermelon. Build a sandcastle or mud pie. Get messy. Ignore the laundry and the dishes. Skip making the beds. Family is forever. Make this summer one where family comes first.

As the kids are out of school enjoying the freedom of no schedules, a break from sports and extracurriculars, this is an exciting time

This annual tradition features boats parading past the dock while local clergy pray for a safe and bountiful fishing season; a wreath is tossed into the water in memory of and to honor our Gig Harbor fishermen. Over the years, since the inception of Astroturf in 1965, man has struggled to come to grips with the ultimate question: Is the grass “greener” when it’s artificial? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of going with synthetic grass versus genuine grass to answer this question. Artificial grass was first used in Major League Baseball in the Houston Astrodome in 1966, replacing the grass field used when the stadium first opened a year earlier. Artificial grass stands up to heavy use, thus the reason it’s used on many sports fields. It requires no irrigation or trimming. Domed, covered and partially covered stadiums may require artificial grass or turf because of the difficulty of getting grass enough sunlight to stay healthy. As for the pros of installing artificial grass for your front and backyard spaces, most people use artificial grass because it requires little to no maintenance. It also requires no irrigation, trimming or gaspowered lawn equipment, and with growing concerns about water conservation and healthrelated issues surrounding fertilizers and pesticides, artificial grass is increasingly becoming the first choice for homeowners. Dog owners can rejoice that synthetic turf is great at preventing even the most persistent puppies from digging, while being exceptionally stain and fade resistant. Not only does it stand up to pet abuse, but your lawn edges can stay crisp and look sharp over the years. Synthetic grasses come in different varieties of colors, lengths, densities and finishes, improving the aesthetics of your home while simultaneously upping your home’s curb appeal. Another key advantage of artificial turf is the longevity and durability of modern synthetic grasses. Until recent years, the warranty offered on most turf products only covered a few years. However, with the recent developments in the artificial grass industry, warranties for the longevity of some lawns can reach up to 25 years. 18

come to the artificial side With the longevity and reliability of artificial grass, this home-use lawn product can come with a high-priced barrier of entry. On average, a homeowner will spend between $6 to $12 per square foot, versus 40 cents per square foot for traditional sod. You will also need to add infill to ensure that individual grasses stay upright and do not get matted down. There are wide varieties of infills available including rubber, sand, Zeofill, Durafill, Envirofill and TCool Infill. The most widely used type of infill would be crumb rubber for most stadiums and sports arenas. Made from recycled tires, it provides good shock absorption qualities. The second most widely used infill is silica sand. Sand is the least expensive infill and tends to be cooler in direct sunlight while absorbing moisture and eliminating some odors naturally. Silica sand infill is easy to come by and spread, while like any day at the beach the silica sand can be jagged and painful to roll around on. It may also just hitch a ride to the bottom of your shoes and make its way into your home. Another popular infill that people use for their artificial turf is ZeoFill or ZeoLite Infill. This infill tends to be the least popular for its lightweight properties but most popular for eliminating pet waste smells. Zeolite is also very porous, which helps keep your turf cooler in direct sunlight when compared to most rubber and sand infill options. Regardless of which one you go with, they all have their pros and cons. If you have pets 20

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

or children, you will most likely want to get an infill that keeps your grass cool, orderly and odorless to help keep your artificial lawn pristine. While you may be conserving resources like water with an artificial lawn, synthetic grass will heat up exponentially in direct exposure to sunlight. While artificial grass is non-flammable, you don’t want it to be extremely hot to the touch. One solution to the problem is to use an infill designed to cool off your grass and make sure that it’s fine to walk on with your bare feet. Some infills (like the TCool Infill) are also designed with technology that captures water from

rainfall, dew, or irrigation and stores it for later use. As the sun’s radiation heats the turf, an infill can help release moisture, keeping the surface cool for up to four days from a single moisture event. While infill is a great way to keep your lawn looking its best, it needs to be replaced a few times throughout the life of the turf. The most infill can cost between $8 to $12 per bag, and one bag typically covers about 30 square feet. Replacing your infill can be done yourself, or you can use a service from a professional installer if time is more of an issue than money. When considering the cost versus time and convenience of an artificial lawn, it can be a great investment that will outlast a traditional (organic) lawn. The amount of time it takes to take care of the soil, plant seed, or install a traditional lawn will be saved. Though the initial cost of installation may be higher than anything else you’ll find on the market, the pros of low maintenance and longevity of your lawn make the pros of purchasing an artificial turf lawn far outweigh the negatives of purchasing and installing your lawn. With the onset of new and improved technologies, including processes to increase the clarity and vibrance of one’s artificial lawn, the grass might just be greener on the artificial side. Of course, you are free to make that judgment for yourself.

making old new again Seeing the beauty in antique pieces by RACHEL KELLY

J

ust because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s done. If anything, it means that it’s stood the test of time. As styles have gone in and out, there are some pieces that stand out as being classic. It could be the lines of the piece that never go out of style, or its lasting practical use. Perhaps it’s that the object seems to carry with it a memory, a story. Maybe that table used to center in your grandmother’s kitchen, bearing the responsibility of feeding 20 farmhands for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe that jewelry box once held your mother’s wedding ring. Perhaps that hat stand was bought for your great grandfather by his childhood friend. Maybe those boots were made for walking, and there’s still plenty of journey left in them. Whatever the reason, whatever the story, here are four ways to give a new look to your favorite old pieces.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022 GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

C h a n g e Yo u r P e r s p e c t i v e . Sometimes the best way to bring life to old things is to change what holds it. Whether this means giving those vintage pictures a new frame, placing an antique piece on a floating shelf, or placing it in an unconventional location. A great example would be plates hung on the wall or door handles used as hooks. There are lots of ways to keep unused pieces that are no longer needed for everyday use.

Change Its Purpose. The jug that used to carry water from the outdoor well just might make a great umbrella stand. The container that used to carry snuff might be great for pills. The door that used to hang in your family’s 100-year-old shed might be great as a backdrop for hooks that you can hang your bags from. The large picture frame might look great as a headboard, or the ladder might double as a blanket holder.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

A S p l a s h o f C o l o r. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your old pieces. An old milking stool or basket can provide that much-needed pop of color in an otherwise earth tone (or white) home. Bright colors such as sun yellow, teal, fire engine red, aqua … whatever you like best. Everybody needs something that when they look at it, they can’t help but smile. Sometimes a little color is all you need.

Re-fit and Polish. There are some things that are simply not made the way they used to be. Like those big wing-backed wooden upholstered sofa chairs, or hundred-yearold chandeliers. There are some things that are right just the way they are, however, they may not be quite perfect as they are. In such a case, the best thing to do is to reupholster or shine to perfection. Some things just have good bones but need a little shine to highlight their original glory.

Real Estate Buyers Breathing Room W h a t do e s t h e s h i f t m e a n t o m e?

Y

es, you heard it right. The breathing room buyers have been waiting for appears to be here or right around the corner!

This last November, we attended four different economic forecasts (both local and national) of which all of them predicted this (being named the shift). Our 2022 Economic Forecast was gearing us up for the year that would level out the exploding prices in our local real estate market with a 6 to 8 percent increase in 2022.

by JENNIFER HAWKINS, KEY2SEE TEAM

2020 - 12 percent price increase

2021 - 23 percent price increase 2022 - We are officially at the half-year mark, and we are at 6 percent. What does this mean to you? It means if you have been on the fence for buying or unsuccessful with multiple offers, NOW IS YOUR TIME! We have likely hit a plateau of pricing, which is what us as REALTORS have been waiting for in order to keep a healthy and sustainable market. The Fed has expedited the process of raising interest rates a bit faster than we had hoped, but I can assure you they are not done yet. Experts are expecting 6.5 to 7 percent by the end of the year. Why am I suggesting you purchase in a time of higher interest rates? Because the only thing that matters is what your monthly payment is! Talk to your REALTOR, talk to your lender, get new calculations, make appropriate adjustments—because today, for the first time in over five years, you will be able to:

Gig Harbor Presents

Rockin’ Rhythm and Blues Local festival supports veterans

b y R AC H E L K E L LY

S

ave the date for August 13, a Saturday, for the Gig Harbor Rockin’ Rhythm and Blues Festival. Not only will the festival be featuring several rockin’ bluesy bands (the impressive list of talent is still growing) and feature several local food trucks and local craft brews, but all proceeds will benefit the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation. So not only will your Saturday be full of food, music and fun, but the money that you pay toward your ticket will benefit veterans suffering from the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation is an obvious choice for the proceeds of the event to benefit, as the event’s organizer is Vietnam Veteran Mike Mitchell. When Mike came home from Vietnam, he was struggling, although at that time there weren’t the resources for veterans that there are today. His story is one of lifelong struggle and despair as a result of the trauma he experienced on the front lines of the U.S. infantry in Vietnam. The story of the details of his struggle are long, as anyone who’s experienced the long and destructible details of war will understand. There’s not enough space to go into it here, nor would it be possible. One can imagine, but not truly understand, the depth of that kind of pain unless they’ve also experienced it. Suffice to say, even though Mike was struggling, he came home and attempted to integrate himself into civilian life once again. He went to work. Stayed busy. His previous experience and connections would have normally led him toward the entertainment industry, but upon coming home all he wanted was a bit of peace. That environment,

the noise, people and excitement only sufficed to amp up his nerves. Mike found some semblance of relief working outdoors, with one person at a time. So, he started a professional painting business. His experience in the entertainment industry still existed, and he kept himself involved here and there; albeit, at a distance. “During a period of chaos within myself, working outside and music kept me sane,” says Mike. However, even distanced from the temptations of the entertainment industry, Mike eventually hit bottom. And when he did, the Veteran Center was there to dig him out. “I was ready to die, but I didn’t want to. I had to stand up for myself somehow,” recalls Mike as he remembers the ordeals of what he’s been through in his life. Through the Vet Center, Mike went through seven months of

outpatient therapy. This allowed him to look inward and deal with what he’d been through. As he grows older, the physical effects of what he went through as a result of exposure to agent orange continue to affect him, but the help he received from veteran resources make it so that he is able to live with the psychological effects of the war. Mike is able to live with himself—and thrive. Mike continued to move forward in life after therapy, continuing to keep himself busy outdoors and with music. Upon losing his friend, who was a big name in the music industry, Mike and friends decided to put on a benefit concert for his family. The concert was a great success. After that, his work in the entertainment industry began to snowball. He was asked to organize various events and fundraisers, and that work has continued through the GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

years. Mike was fully capable of making enough money through his work in painting, so all the money that came from these events went to charity. He just wanted to stay busy really, and these events doubled as something to keep him busy as well as provide a way for him to give back to the community. Previous events benefited other charities. It wasn’t until Mike met Leslie Mann that he started to organize events for Permission To Start Dreaming. When Mike met the founder of Permission To Start Dreaming, he immediately felt a connection. Leslie lost her son to PTSD. Upon coming home from the war, he was put on a 30-day watch; upon his release, he died by suicide. Leslie founded Permission To Start Dreaming to provide a future of hope and healing to those who have served our country as veterans and first responders, so that her son’s story would not be repeated. Both Mike Mitchell and Leslie Mann are two people who truly understand the effects of PTSD from both the perspective of the veteran and the family. Together, as they serve along with the board of Permission To Start Dreaming, they make an impact for their community. On August 13, get ready to enjoy the Mo’ Betta Band, T Town Aces, Northern Rebel, HD Fusion, and Soul Posse for the benefit of the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation. Tickets are available at Finholm’s, Harbor Barber and Kimball Coffeehouse. For more information, check out RockinRnB.com or call Mike Mitchell at 253.548.6294.

T

his year’s Teacher of the Year for the 2021-2022 school year goes to Delanie Oakes, who has been teaching second grade general education at Artondale Elementary for 24 years. Delanie finds the daily fresh start and new possibilities that come with teaching children, as well as the awesome joy of learning something new every day from the students. Even after 24 years, Delanie is still excited when she hears that gasp of understanding. It truly never gets old. When asked about the unique challenges of the teaching profession that the public often doesn’t understand, Delanie answered, “There is always change: new curricula and assessments, new strategies to learn and apply, new systems, or old systems to tweak for better function or efficiency, new kids with their own unique set of strengths and challenges … just to name a few. This myriad is why teaching will always challenge me and never get old.” Experiences such as watching her learners reach a point of understanding is what stands out most in her mind as she continues to teach. Teachers are for us and our community much more than just instructors; they are role models with life lessons and years of experiences to pass along. Delanie Oakes is no different. She thinks often of a saying, “From little acorns, mighty oaks grow.” Which means that, to her, teaching is so much more than simply teaching core subjects. It’s about the heart. It’s about building relationships. It’s about helping learners see their strengths

Delanie is a teacher who helps children grow into their whole self, so that they can strive beyond the classroom. STUDENTS BRING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGE THROUGH by RACHEL KELLY PASSION PROJECTS

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

A Passion Project is an individual assignment that represents each student’s independent passions, goals, values and interests. As the name suggests, the project mirrors each student’s passion. These projects are meant to inspire and excite, which for many is exactly the result. Students feel genuine joy as they go about producing their Passion Project, projects which range as widely as the individuals they represent. The details of each student’s project have culminated in the development of valuable skills—from communication skills such as filming and presenting elevator pitches to creative problem-solving skills. Each student is responsible for an action plan to bring their vision to life. This means that they tap into their creative side, as well as improve their confidence. They build joy as they see their passion come to life and get firsthand

experience in what previously they only imagined. It’s real-life action and innovation. There are 33 projects in total, each project with one or two students. Each team or student has found something in the community that they would like to see change or progress in. As you can imagine, with so many students and projects, the impact is large. So, without further ado, here’s how these Passion Projects are impacting Gig Harbor. Several students have passions for health care. Alexa Donion is making cards for kids in long-term care facilities, and Skyler Kimble is initiating a park day where the community can make cards for hospitalized children. Miko Sandoval and Shan Rahman are improving mental health by passing on positive notes made by and delivered randomly to people around the harbor. David Hopkins is passionate about making his community aware of mental illness and is encouraging kindness and empathy. Paige Gladstone and Emily Trader are implementing a fundraiser with funds going to Project Sunshine. Their efforts also include putting together donation kits. Kaiser Keck, Carlos Rivas and Connor Louden are organizing a free dental screening and care event at Wright’s Park.

A number of high school students had a passion and focus on food and housing insecurities in the community. Ben Hulbert recognized the need for toiletries at local food banks and has decided to collect donations of these much-needed items. Zola Thomas’ focus on the food bank has to do with the female population. She hopes to address period poverty by collecting donations of period products for the local pantry. George Cox built a food pantry, which he will stock with donations. Sienna Bennett, Caroline Gregory and Taya Strauss are focusing on homelessness and will be collecting and distributing donations. Taya Strauss has focused her lens specifically on teen homelessness and is working with Harbor Hope Center. Several more students have passions in various areas of education. Anna Schumaker and Malia Fraser have recognized the need for technology in schools (especially during the pandemic) and are collecting tech from businesses for local students in need. Trilby Hellwich has recognized the need for education as it relates to girls in countries with limited education and has aligned herself with the Malala Fund to collect donations. Aubrey Kelly, Jackson Floyd and Trevor Hellwich believe in the power of music and will be putting on a benefit concert to raise money for music therapy. Various students have aligned themselves with passions that focus on practical community need. Nolan Howard is collecting gently used sports equipment to make participation in youth sports more accessible. Izzy Stretz, Megan Mackay and Melissa Enriquez are looking to gather

supplies and funds for the local Humane Shelter. David Ficca is building a flag retirement station so that U.S. flags can be respectfully disposed of. Zach Coons has put together a compelling case for the need for vaccination, encouraging his peers and community to get vaccinated. Nora Poulton is convincing her community not to text and drive. Sunny Tian is lobbying to repair and make safe community walkways. Alexander Fernandez, London Coats and Bradley Matalon are passionate about the environment and are encouraging others to clean up our community and beaches. Lastly, there are those students who are interested in improving the lives of specific people groups. Tia Berry has a heart for children and is collecting funds for the distribution of gifts to children who go without during Christmas. Molly Home is passionate about opportunities available to youth and is encouraging support of the Coffee Oasis in Port Orchard. Ella Hatteberg, Seth Maherry and Will Payne are sending a message of hope to those that suffer from domestic violence. Jak McLellan, Isaac Gary, Cole Rushforth and Luke Miller are volunteering at Night to Shine (a prom night that honors those with special needs) and plan on volunteering in the Special Olympics.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, affectionately coined Galloping Gertie, is well known for its history of collapse in 1940, just four months after its construction. A fatal flaw in its construction called aeroelastic flutter resulted in its “gallop” in high winds. Historic videos of the event can be seen at the Tacoma History Museum as well as online. Watching the astounding footage might be an interesting addition to your run. It’s a famous collapse for a reason. One could even call it an epic fail. But don’t worry, the bridge won’t gallop during your run no matter how windy this

August may turn out to be. Thankfully, a successful replacement was built in 1950. The newer eastbound bridge was built in 2007 and is the bridge that all participants will have the opportunity to run across. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge has several claims to fame. At the time of its construction, it was the third largest suspension bridge in the world. The narrows are also home to the Pacific Giant Octopus, who have built their cities under the depths within the bridge ruins. In the past, locals used to very rudely wrestle the octopus to shore as a show of strength. Thankfully, we no longer do that. We like to run on a bridge above them instead. Even though there are lots of interesting bits of history surrounding the Narrows, the collapse and subsequent “Galloping Gertie” nickname is by far the Narrows’ largest claim to fame. The collapse is known worldwide. This is probably why the race attracts some international participants, as well as people from across the country and locals alike. This year’s proceeds from the Galloping Gertie will benefit three children’s charities locally, as well as two in Guatemala. This year’s beneficiaries include: Children’s Home Society Peninsula, Food Backpacks 4 Kids, Communities in Schools Peninsula,

his year on August 6, the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor North is sponsoring the Galloping Gertie half marathon, 10k and 5k. The rotary has hosted the event for the past 11 years, however, more recent events were put on hold due to the pandemic. This year, the much-anticipated race is back! Participants will meet at the Tacoma Narrows Airport and will traverse the whole of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. With its sweeping views of the Sound, Mount Rainier, Olympic Mountains and the surrounding cities of Gig Harbor and Tacoma, the race is sure to attract its anticipated 700 participants. “We especially love that this event has become a family affair,” says Bob Anderson, the marathon organizer. The Galloping Gertie is sure to be a memorable event for the whole family.

Pacific Giant Octopus. Opal House and a Montessori school in Guatemala. The Children’s Home Society Peninsula provides early learning support for solid childhood foundations. They provide preschool, early play opportunities, parenting classes and home visits. More information can be found at ChildrensHomeSociety.org/Pierce. Food Backpack 4 Kids is a nutritional supplement program that provides for nutrition on the weekends and school vacations. This provides a sound basis for learning and growth due to a strong nutritional program. More information can be found at FoodBackpacks4Kids.org. The Communities in Schools Peninsula is on a mission to provide a community of support to kids in school, to empower them to stay in school and achieve their life goals. The Communities in Schools Peninsula program is one of the few preventative programs that reach children regardless of their socioeconomic status before they reach a point where they will have to drop out of school. More information can be found at Peninsula.ciswa.org. The Opal House and the Montessori school are both located in Guatemala, which have strong ties to the students in our community. In the past, local high school students have visited Guatemala for service projects, a program that students are hoping to resume in 2023. The Opal House in Guatemala works with battered children and women, and the Montessori school offers a quality education to an area of Guatemala that normally would not have such resources. All participants have the option to register for a half marathon, 10k and 5k. The Half marathon is $99, the 10k $85 and the 5k $75. For your donation, all runners will receive a bit of swag including a custom finisher medal, free downloadable race photos and a cool tech tee! With the sweeping views, historic location, and donated profits, what’s not to love about this race? Catch a Glimpse of Magnificent Creatures Incredible local beaches to view wildlife this summer

I

love the peninsula life. Being surrounded by water on three sides means I am never far from it and all its wonders. Whether I’m driving to work or going to lunch, every glimpse reminds me how lucky I am to live and work within the biologically rich waters of the Salish Sea. Spanning two countries, this inland sea is teeming with life—with 37 species of mammals, 172 species of birds, 253 species of fish, and more than 3,000 species of invertebrates! I spent my childhood summers roaming the beaches during low-tide or hanging from the side of the public dock in search of these creatures. Garbage can lid-sized sunflower stars, bright yellow egg-yolk jellies, and every crab under a rock were commonly spotted during my explorations. As an adult, I’m grateful for the chance to continue my beach adventures as part of my job and share my love of the Salish Sea with others. A common question we receive at Harbor WildWatch is which beach is the best to see local wildlife. While it’s not possible to choose one over the other, the Harbor WildWatch team put together a list of beaches that we recommend visiting this summer to catch a glimpse of the magnificent creatures who call the Salish Sea home. Penrose Point State Park | 321 158th Avenue SW, Lakebay Parks.wa.gov/564/Penrose-Point This park has a variety of wildlife along the expansive 2 miles of shoreline. The ample parking and flat grassy area adjacent to the beach make it very accessible for all ages and a perfect spot for post-exploration picnics. • Highlights: Various habitats from mud to gravel to cobble to boulders, a lagoon, and a near mile-long (out-and-back) sandspit exposed at low tide. • Creatures to look for: Piddock clams, moon snails, plumose anemones, mottled stars, red rock crabs, and the eggs of opalescent squid. • Special considerations: The Washington State Discover Pass is required to park at all WA State Parks. Cost is $10/day or $30/annual

No matter what you call it, there is plenty of beach exploration available at this PenMet Parks property situated on the northern tip of Fox Island. • Highlights: Designated marine preserve with distinct habitats to explore from the short steep spit to a small sand patch in the higher intertidal zone, to a wide sand flat when the tide is low. It’s one of the few beaches where you can observe clay babies and hear the tube worms sing! • Creatures to look for: Bamboo tube worms (which make squeaky “singing” noises), leather stars, Japanese oysters, ribbon worms, and striped nudibranchs. • Special considerations: Limited facilities and overnight camping is available for those arriving in human-powered vessels only. On a clear day, this park has stunning views of Mt. Rainier that you can enjoy from the picnic tables at the top of the hill or swings at the entrance to the beach. The Colvos Passage Marine Preserve is located just south of this PenMet Park border. • Best Features: Steep beach with concentrated marine life to be found around the boulders and eel grass habitat. Depending on the current, this is also a popular SCUBA diving site. • Creatures to look for: Stimpson’s sun stars, red octopus, and the chance to view seals, sea lions, and orcas offshore. • Special considerations: Limited facilities and a considerable hill from the parking area to the beachfront. The best time to view wildlife at any local beach is during the lowest low tide of the day, so we encourage you to download one of the many free tide apps to ensure you are always prepared to explore the intertidal zone. “Experience the quiet, peaceful beauty of the South Puget Sound.” and scenic drives. With 240 miles of hiking trails and walking paths to explore, Mt. Rainier offers an experience for the entire family. It is visited by thousands every season, inviting all ages to climb, camp, fish, and more.

Parasailing The Pacific Northwest offers adventure and views from above in the form of parasailing! Often described as a peaceful experience, parasailing involves soaring in a parachute while being gently towed by boat. Tacoma’s Pacific Parasail is known for taking guests high above Commencement Bay in an adventure marked with signature bright red parasails. “Experience the quiet, peaceful beauty of the South Puget Sound at altitudes that rival the Space Needle,” Pacific Parasail states, offering views of both Seattle towers and marine wildlife. Parasailing is also available from Coeur d’Alene Parasail, offering views of lake Coeur d’Alene from 800 feet in the air. Take off and land right from the boat to experience the lake from an entirely new perspective! Pick Summer Produce Take the family outside to support local growers and take in the season’s best produce. Highlighted Northwest farms include those in Greenbluff, just north of Spokane, and Puyallup’s Picha’s Berry Farm, both offering a selection of you-pick berries, freshly picked produce and more seasonal goodies. It’s time to venture outside and explore the abundance of outdoor opportunities that await this summer. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

S

ome of the oldest people in the world, with the highest quality of life, live in the Mediterranean. This could be in large part to their active lifestyle; the people of Greece and Italy walk and bike everywhere as well as spend a lot of time outdoors. This could be because of their deep connection to family; the people of the Mediterranean are interconnected to their family and friends and often live with several generations under one roof. It is also true that culturally, the people within the Mediterranean stick to rhythms that encourage them to connect to their greater community. However, their rich lifestyle of lifelong health is believed to be mostly attributed to their diet. The Mediterranean is known for its cultural roots that encourage high-quality foods, eating within season, eating locally according to what’s available, gardening, and responsibly caring for the animals and animal products that they consume. The Mediterranean diet is modeled after this way of living and encourages a healthy dietary pattern that is sustainable as a lifestyle. This means that diets such as the Mediterranean diet are more a way of life, versus a strict standard that forces weight loss; weight that once lost returns once you return to daily living. Research shows that the Mediterranean diet can lower chances for cardiovascular diseases, prevent certain types of cancer, and it can have a positive impact on mental health. If we are to assume that the people of the Mediterranean live a long life in part because of their diet, there is also the added benefit of living long. The goal of such a diet is not to look perfect but to live within the weight that is healthy for your body type. To help you to feel good, versus craft a body that is “presentable.” The goal here is long life, lived well, surrounded by those you love. In light of that, what is the Mediterranean diet? The Mediterranean diet is pretty straight forward, crafted around local Mediterranean cuisine. It emphasizes fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes; things like peas, lentils, all different types of dried beans, tomatoes, and leafy greens. It includes low or nonfat dairy products, fish, poultry, nontropical vegetable oils and nuts. So, palm oil and coconut oil are out, while peanut oil, avocado oil and olive oil are acceptable. Olive oil is especially encouraged as a source of healthy fats. Freshly pressed, olive oil is considered to be more of a condiment than an oil and has a variety of uses in all types of cuisine. As expected, this diet limits sugary foods, highly processed foods, and foods high in sodium. Lightly processed foods, such as quality cheeses, are allowed. Foods that have a (relatively) ample amount of salt aren’t prohibited in any way, just foods that contain high levels of sodium. Foods that are

eating within season high in sodium are generally preserved and highly processed; sodium becomes easier to avoid as long as highly processed foods are limited. The reason that the Mediterranean diet has been proven to work so well is because it mimics the natural flow of what our bodies derive from nature and suggests ingredients that have been proven to encourage healthy habits for generations. It is for this reason that there are other diets that also work in much the same way that the Mediterranean diet does. Diets such as the DASH diet are also considered to be healthy for lifelong use. DASH, or the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, is a diet that allows for more dairy and meat and doesn’t restrict healthy fats to ingestion of olive oil. True to its name, the DASH diet helps lower blood pressure by focusing on foods that are high in potassium, calcium and magnesium. This means that under the DASH diet one can eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, lentils, dairy and lean meats all in balance and moderation. Diets such as Paleo, Keto, or Whole 30 are surprisingly not on this list. 60

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

Not because they don’t yield results! The Keto Diet can be great for someone who is suffering from diabetes, and the Whole 30 diet can be great for helping someone overcome bad habitual eating. However, these diets are not considered heart healthy, nor are they approved for lifetime adherence. In any diet, the focus should always be on quality over quantity. Foods high in nutrition are the primary focus, versus foods that satisfy quickly but ultimately go unused by the body. That being said, our bodies need all kinds of foods, versus strict restrictions, to get the variety of nutrients that it needs for overall health. For instance, breads and pastas are widely eaten in sustainable diets because carbohydrates are good for quick bursts of energy. Carbohydrates are balanced in moderation by fresh and cooked fruits and vegetables, as are part of a meal. Eating well isn’t so much about focusing on eating one thing and not eating another, but eating everything all together. For instance, pasta is usually eaten with pasta sauce, which usually incorporates a variety of vegetables with a moderate amount of meat. Taken all together, a healthy diet focuses on the whole plate. In turn, from head to toe, the whole body is well fed.

n working with divorcing couples as a mediator, I am confronted time and again with good people wanting different things during an often heartbreaking and enormously stressful time. Yet, amidst all the painful emotions and worrying about their post-divorce security, some people would rather continue to escalate the conflict than look for ways to remove themselves from it. Mediating often involves observing the arguing while attempting to manage the tenor and change the discourse to one of problem-solving. And the foundation for problem-solving is always understanding. As a mediator, I’m always seeking to understand what each party wants. Not just narrowing down what they want, but why they want it. If I can understand, I can often help their soon-to-be ex understand. However, this is where I often meet a road block. When assisted by a professional, most parties can reach full settlement on their asset and debt distribution, financial support, and parenting plan in a matter of several well-organized hours after reviewing the necessary information and exploring the pros and cons of all options. However, there are parties who love the prolonged fight, the “negotiations,” and causing disruption to the other party as much as possible. Arguing to “win,” or merely “for the sake of argument,” can be a costly endeavor when paying professionals to listen and help reach resolution. Why are we so conditioned to argue rather than respectfully exchange perspectives?

62 62

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

When clients ask me how long their divorce will take, my standard answer is: “It depends.” First and foremost, how much conflict are you each bringing to the process? Are you vested in problem-solving and finding a mutually acceptable way to reach terms that benefit both of your interests? Or are you more interested in trying to have your divorce professional be “judge and jury”? Hire an experienced professional. A professional who has done this work a long time can help you cut through the extraneous noise and narratives and get to the facts and options available for settlement much quicker (read: with much less overall cost) than a professional who allows you to bemoan your ex at length. Use a therapist for your emotional journey and learn how to deal with all the triggers that a separation and divorce can create. It is also important to avoid relying on a lot of independent internet research. I sometimes spend countless, expensive hours helping clients “unlearn” their version of the law, the procedures, and the facts. And establish a reasonable budget and reasonable timeline with your professional for your process and then seek to understand how that can be accomplished. In other words, what can you do to help your professional help you? “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” - Albert Einstein Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. benefits will have increased to age 67, where it is currently scheduled to remain.

However, the Social Security system is under increasing strain. Better health care and longer lifespans have resulted in an increasing number of people drawing Social Security benefits. As the Baby Boom generation (those born between 1946 and 1964) has begun to retire, even greater demands are being placed on the system.

When calculating the income you will have in retirement, you might recognize that Social Security benefits may play a more limited role. Some financial professionals suggest ignoring Social Security altogether when developing a retirement income plan.

In 1950, there were 16.5 active workers to support each person receiving Social Security benefits. In 2021, there were only 2.7 workers supporting each Social Security beneficiary. And it is projected that there will be only 2.3 active workers to support each Social Security beneficiary by 2035.1 Although Social Security payments are typically adjusted for inflation, your own income and expenses may rise at a faster pace. And you might have to wait longer than you anticipated to qualify for full benefits. It used to be that full benefits were available after you reached age 65. But since 2003, the age to qualify for full benefits has been increasing on a graduated scale based on year of birth. By 2027, the age to qualify for full Social Security

That means you may have to wait longer to qualify for full Social Security benefits to start replacing a smaller percentage of your preretirement income.

etabolic flexibility is the ability of our bodies to switch between utilizing different nutrient energy sources (carbohydrate and fat) depending on what is available at the time. The survival of our species depended on this flexibility, with the ability to efficiently utilize available nutrients, as well as to endure periods of food deprivation by utilizing stored energy. When glucose is readily available (from carbohydrates), our bodies preferentially metabolize glucose as a fuel source. When glucose stores are depleted, our bodies turn to utilizing fat as a fuel source. This design is akin to hybrid car technology, by which vehicles run on battery power until it is depleted, then shift to the backup power source—gasoline. Metabolic Inflexibility – Can’t Run on Fat Now that we live in a culture of abundance, our population has become metabolically inflexible. With the continuous availability of food products and especially processed foods, the average person is nearly always running on carbohydrates and thus remains inefficient at fat metabolism. The following signs are consequences of this inflexibility: • Tiredness after high-carb meals, e.g. “carb coma” • Afternoon fatigue • Hunger within a couple hours after a meal • Craving for snacks • Discomfort when missing/skipping a meal, e.g. “hangry”

Grazing vs Feasting/Fasting Organisms that require frequent or continuous intake of nutrients must remain in environments that provide a ubiquitous supply, e.g. grazing animals. In contrast, organisms that are capable of consuming large, satiating meals are able to tolerate environments in which food may be scarce at times. Benefits of Metabolic Flexibility Metabolic flexibility imparts significantly more freedom in terms of when and how often one needs to eat. When fat-adapted, it is possible to use one’s own fat stores as fuel rather than having to consume frequent meals, allowing one to tolerate skipped meals and endure periods of fasting. Our bodies are designed to acquire energy from food when it is available and to burn stored energy as fuel when food is scarce. This design enables a continuous supply of energy at all times, independent of food availability. How to Improve Metabolic Flexibility Metabolic flexibility results from challenging one’s body with periods of carbohydrate restriction intermixed with periods of carbohydrate consumption. Carbohydraterestricted periods force the body to shift to fat-burning mode, while carbohydrate consumption reinforces the carb-burning pathways. How this strategy of varying carbohydrate intake is employed depends on multiple individual factors.

“D

oc, just tell me what eyedrops to use for my dry eyes.”

Have you ever asked that question and been told, “Just use ‘these’ eye drops”? Dry eyes (or poor-quality tear film) actually have more causes and treatments than you ever dreamt. Since one treatment does not work for all patients, it can feel like the kitchen sink is being thrown at you (or at least your eyes). Peruse the eye-drop section of the pharmacy: seemingly hundreds of types of drops exist, all claiming to help. Please don’t grab the cheapest or the one to “get the red out.” Trust me when I say that poor-quality tear film is complex and cannot be cured; more is involved than just using “these” eye drops. What’s that? “My eyes feel fine,” you say? Yes, you can have poor-quality tear film even if your eyes feel fine. Does your vision get blurry after you blink? How do your eyes feel after you’ve been staring at the computer at work? Do windy days make your eyes water? Are your contacts uncomfortable? These are just a few symptoms of dry eyes. The oily top layer of your tears is produced by oil glands within your upper and lower eyelids. The oil should be clear and naturally

expressed onto the eye as you blink. If the glands get sick and die, not enough oil will stay on the surface of the tears, allowing them to evaporate quickly. Poor oil film is the leading cause of dry eye. Right now, hold your eyes open for as long as you can. Do you feel that stinging or ice pickpoking sensation on them? That occurs when the tears evaporate, letting air hit the surface of your eyes. Typically, the shorter you can hold out before you have to blink and wash a new layer of tears over the surface, the more evaporation is taking place—thus the abysmal quality of those oil glands. A meibographer can take pictures of your glands to help us figure out a treatment plan for you. Schedule a medical eye visit (dry-eye discussions and treatment recommendations are not covered under standard vision plans, so the visit is billed to medical insurance) to allow time to be devoted to look for causes and maybe learn about relief. One short article is nowhere near enough room to dive deeply into the causes and treatments of poor-quality tear film. Please call or email me with any questions, as always. And schedule your eye exam if you haven’t yet: 253.432.4303 or info@eyecandy-optical.com.

HOW TO GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE Embrace ‘When pigs fly’ b y J E N N I F E R “ TA Z ” VA ZQ U E Z

E

ver heard of the phrase, “When pigs fly”? Meaning not going to happen, many assume the phrase is true, especially when it comes to change or trying something new. Have you ever said, “I can’t do that!”? When we use the words “I can’t,” we are basically meaning “Won’t” or “When pigs fly.” What if we can, but we choose to let a fear, past belief or an excuse win because we don’t want to feel uncomfortable outside our comfort zone? Our comfort zone is a mental and physical state of relative safety and ease. It includes our daily routines and ways of thinking. We try to minimize uncertainty, risks, get complacent, and stop learning/growing in our comfort zone. However, research shows to improve performance, build resilience, confidence, reach new goals, change habits, learn something new, and be open to different ideas and opportunities, we need to experience a certain degree of anxiety. A dynamic tension between what is challenging but doable. This stretch zone is located just outside our comfort zone and is filled with infinite possibilities. In this zone, we feel more energetic, productive, creative and happy in life.

So how do you go about stepping out of your comfort zone? First, be curious and acknowledge doubts/fears and understand where they come from. Then adopt a growth versus a fixed mindset. Anything is possible with time and practice. Expect mis-takes. They are part of the process, and we need them to grow. Lastly, understand there is no difference between anxiety and excitement, rather it is how we frame it (as negative or positive). Take, for example, Darren Harrison. On May 10, 2022, when the pilot flying the plane lost consciousness, do you think Harrison said, “I can’t”? No, he told the Air Traffic Controller he didn’t know how to fly and together they got the plane safely on the ground! What if you playfully flipped the meaning of “When pigs fly” to “I can” with a “Bring it on!” attitude, as you courageously stepped into your stretch zone? We can choose to take consistent small steps forward. When a mis-take happens, simply ask: What went well? What could be better? What can you do next? Ready to say with excitement, “When pigs fly!” as you face those obstacles, and step toward your goals and dreams?

Don’t overlook the eyebrows when it comes to accentuating those eyes. Makeup artists often describe how eyebrows can change the entire look of the face. Eyebrows can reframe the shape of the face and allow you to express yourself without saying a word. Fortunately, there are more ways than ever before to enhance the look of your eyebrows, and many of this season’s most popular methods are nearly effortless. Draw the attention to your eyes this summer with the following tips and trends: Eyebrow Lamination. One of the most popular eyebrow trends of 2022, brow lamination is a non-invasive, semipermanent treatment designed to produce perfectly balanced, brushed-up brows that last for weeks or months. Under-eyeliner tends to lift the outer corners of the eyes, helping the eyes appear a bit bigger and brighter. Smudged Eyeliner. Expressive “moody” makeup is in for 2022, and you can bring the look of a smoky eye into the summer with this season’s revived smudged eyeliner trend. All you’ll need is your everyday black eyeliner (for ease, opt for a pencil or crayon over liquid eyeliner) and a short eyeshadow brush. The unstructured, messy-chic look is easy to create—simply apply your eyeliner and use your brush to softly blur the lines right away. The best part? Leaning in to the unstructured, rule-free aspect of this look. Release the focus on flawlessness and embrace a little freedom with this trend. Make a Statement with Metallics and Eye Shadows. The summer’s eye makeup trends celebrate color pops with bright, summery tones, and all things glitter. From the runways to mainstream media, the eyes are making more of a statement than ever this year. It’s all about the eyes this season, and ultra-glam, adorned features are in, from metallic eye shadows to carefully placed gems and rhinestones. Adding a gem to the inner corners of the eyes has become a popular look—just use a drop of latex-free lash glue 74

w o l g y r e m m u s Lean into a . s e n o t d e ss i k and sunbefore carefully pressing on your gem of choice! If you want the glam without the accessories, start with a metallic glitter, or a bold, shimmering shade of eyeshadow, to incorporate the statement-making trend into your everyday eye-makeup routine.

Colorful eyeshadows in pastels and bright hues are in—choose your shade and place it on top of an eyeshadow primer to ensure a strong hold. Pair your bright eyes with neutral lip colors and a clear brow wax to keep the color pop in focus! Color Pops with Eyeliner. Not sure if you’re ready to step into the bright-colored eyeshadow trends this summer? If you want to try something new without going for a full-colored eyeshadow, a colored eyeliner applied along your lower lashes is the perfect compromise. It might feel like an adventurous step from your normal look (especially if that look is based in ultra-natural or neutral tones), but it’s a

subtle enough step out of your comfort zone that you just might love it! A swipe of color under your bottom lashes can quickly add impact and significantly brighten the eyes with little effort. Warm Blushes and Tanned Tones. Lean into a summery glow and sun-kissed tones with your makeup this season, including your eye makeup! An all-over facial glow is a definite summer look, and all it takes is some bronzer, lipstick in a warm, neutral shade, and a shimmering copper-toned eyeshadow to achieve the appearance of being sun-kissed throughout your face. With blushes back in style this season, use that to accentuate this trend. When you’re using blushes or bronzers to accentuate your facial shape (on the bridge of the nose and low on the cheeks), use the remaining product to brighten your eyelids for an allover brightening!

W

hen it comes to what we have in our purse, it generally all comes down to what we need when we’re on the run. Sometimes what we need can change from person to person. There are the obvious things that we all have, such as chapstick, feminine items, and the occasional Ibuprofen. There are the things that we pack when we’re out and about all day, such as bottles of water and easy-to-pack and somewhat healthy snacks. And then there’s that breath freshener or gum for after you eat. Then there are those things that we wish we thought of for that one time. That thing that happened and we were stuck with nothing in our purse but tic tacs. This list is for those times. The times when life throws a curveball and the only thing standing between you and certain disaster is your no-nonsense attitude and what’s in the purse. This list is for those purse bearers who want to be unbeatable.

They have these tiny little first aid kits that are just the best, with room for a few personal items that can be catered for you and yours. My little family suffers from all kinds of skin allergies, so we carry around this miraculous stuff called GOOP that calms grass hives and cleans minor wounds and abrasions. Brush, Hair Ties and Bobby Pins:

When you’re constantly on the go with no time to spare, your hair may need a little refreshing mid-day. Keep a brush on hand with a few hair ties wrapped around it, and a few bobby pins stuck into the bands. After a quick brush, pull your hair up into a sleek ponytail or messy bun for an easy, stylish look that’s perfect for the summer heat.

MOXI™ is the laser for everyone! Designed to treat all skin types, anytime of the year, MOXI™ is ideal for all patients who are looking to rejuvenate their skin or are just starting a skin regimen and are wanting to revitalize and refresh your skin’s appearance without downtime. Due to the minimal downtime needed and the gentleness of the technology, it’s also an ideal treatment for regular skin maintenance to keep your skin looking flawless.

Serina Jones, LME 20+ years experience @serinajones_aesthetics

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

MOXI™ delivers fractionated laser energy to create micro-coagulation zones pulling out pigmented areas in the process, which the body then repairs, replacing damaged cells with fresh new ones. MOXI™ is designed to provide tonal and textural improvements to your face with low downtime, resulting in skin renewal.

How comfortable is the treatment? Depending on the level of treatment provided, most patients find the treatment well tolerated. A topical numbing cream can be applied to help ensure your treatment is as comfortable as possible. How long does it take to see results? Results vary depending on your treatment goals. The day following your treatment, your skin will be very dry and feel like sandpaper and, depending on your level of treatment, you may see the small micro dots called “MENDs” where the laser was applied. As the micro zones heal, they will darken and feel rough. Between days three and five, the “Mends” will slough off, revealing the renewed skin beneath. What is the post care? Because this is a non-ablative fractionated treatment, the post-care regimen is simple. Immediately after treatment, wear a physical sunscreen with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection and SPF 30+ or higher. After 24 hours, makeup may be applied. Combining MOXI™ with Broad Band Light This is one of our favorite combination therapies to do to rejuvenate the skin. You get the benefits of Broad Band Light, which rejuvenates at a cellular level correcting redness, pigment and tone, and the incredible benefits of the MOXI™ for deeper resurfacing, textural change and brightening. At Gig Harbor Aesthetics, we offer these amazing treatments along with many others to get your skin looking its absolute best!

Celebrating 40 Years! Developing creative and confident players both on and off the field

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

F

or the past 40 years, Harbor Soccer Club has been dedicated to developing youth players—both on and off the pitch—striving to create an environment where players have the opportunity to learn, improve and excel on the field playing the game of soccer.

“The 40th year anniversary is a significant milestone for the club and is a tribute to all those who have worked to make it happen,” says Jon Schuette, HSC Board president. Harbor Soccer Club is a community club, where players, coaches, referees and spectators are like family. “We want the best for all of them and strive to provide the environment to allow this to happen,” affirms Jason Jarrett, HSC technical director and general manager. “Whether a player goes on to play at a top-level (collegiately, professionally, etc.) or just plays to have fun with friends in our recreational program, we want them all to leave us with a life-long love of the game. Our players of today will be our coaches, referees, spectators of the future, and it is this community/family culture that is so important to us!”

Bryce Waddington, Jason Jarrett, Matthew Hodgson

The board and coaches of HSC endeavor to develop creative and confident players, recognizing them for their creativity, flair and individual expression—while still emphasizing the highest standards of sportsmanship, leadership, responsibility, teamwork and respect for others. “We base our successes on how well our players develop—not just on the pitch, but as young people, all while remembering that this is a competitive sport,” states Jason. “If Harbor Soccer Club players are enjoying their soccer, advancing their skill level, being taught the beautiful game by enthusiastic, energetic coaches, then we know we will achieve great things.” HSC has both volunteer recreational coaches and professional staff coaches, who are connected with Harbor Soccer Club’s mission, philosophy and values. “We are a community-focused club, and our coaches are one of the most important pieces of this. The impact they can have on the life of a youth player, both on and off the pitch, is immense and cannot be underestimated or taken for granted,” states Bryce Waddington, HSC director of coaching. When it comes to the professional staff coaches on the Premier side, evaluation of their job performance is not just based on results (wins and losses) but rather the whole picture. “For the player, their social and emotional development through the game and team is just as important as their technical and tactical progress—and our coaches must understand this first and foremost,” Bryce affirms.

HSC board, coaches and players: Jon Schuette, Larry Kalahiki, Michelle Matheson, Matthew Hodgson, Bryan King, Bryce Waddington, Stephanie, Grace and Kaylee Cox, Jason Jarrett, Shannon Lee and Jeff Lavinder HARBOR SOCCER CLUB 253.851.2099 | HarborSoccerClub.com

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

HSC offers programs for children ages 4 through 18, with several levels of play, beginning with their Micro program for 4- and 5-year-olds. For players who are looking for the recreational route, they can participate in the Small-Sided program (6 through 12) and onto the Club program (13 through 18). Those players ages 5 through 7 looking for advanced development and opportunities graduate to the Jr. Academy program and then on to play on one of the Harbor Premier teams (8 to 18). Harbor Premier is HSC’s competitive year-round programming in which players are hand-selected for the teams. These train three times a week, 10 months a year, and compete in the Washington State Regional Club League (RCL).

The RCL is comprised of 20-member clubs statewide and is the highest level of competition available under the Washington Youth Soccer umbrella. In addition to just playing the game, several HSC players start referee certifications, work as coaches in-training (CITs) and find their first jobs within the HSC club or association. Off the field, players learn about team fundraising and developing skills mentally along with their teammates. “We are always looking to further our players’ on-field opportunities and development. For example, we offer a supplemental College Showcase program that allows additional exposure and assistance to those players looking to advance to collegiate soccer, weekly Rangers training sessions through our partnership with Glasgow Rangers, and unlimited usage of a train-at-home app called Techne, just to name a few,” says Bryce. Forty years since its inception, HSC is still going strong, thanks to its players, coaches and families. “Multiple generations playing and enjoying the beautiful game here in Gig Harbor while wearing the Harbor badge is incredible. We are very proud of this accomplishment and excited for what the future holds,” Jon smiles. When it comes to its future, HSC has huge aspirations as a club and cannot wait for what lies ahead. “Additional programming and opportunities are just around the corner,” shares Jason. “With the severe shortage of lit, turf fields in Gig Harbor and the surrounding areas, we hope to develop our own complex of fields that can be a home base for our 1,500-plus players each season. We also hope to continue to build on our legacy in the community and to further help develop our Gig Harbor youth into not only lifelong lovers of the game of soccer but also confident, strong, responsible young adults.” GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

Where Technology and Beauty Go Hand in Hand The perfect blend of day spa meets medical spa

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

O

pened November of last year by owners Chris Haque and his daughter Sabiya Haque, Guinot Institut Paris Spa invites residents and visitors to Gig Harbor to step into this exclusive spa—only the second Guinot in the United States! “We are so excited to bring this spa to Gig Harbor,” shares Sabiya, lead esthetician at the spa. “Guinot of Paris is the number one skin-care brand in Paris, and it is incredible that we can now offer this top-of-the-line product here in the states. Many will travel long distances just to be able to have access to the treatments we offer here in Gig Harbor.” Guinot was founded more than four decades ago by well-known chemist Rene Guinot and is the number one skin-care brand and spa in all of Europe. “Guinot is the perfect blend of a day spa/med spa,” affirms Sabiya. “We have so many amazing treatments to offer that are loved worldwide. Most people who travel and go out of the country recognize, and get excited, that Guinot is here in Gig Harbor! The product is 100 percent going to be loved by everyone—and the results speak for themselves.” The vision of Guinot is simple: to be the number one skin-care treatment brand worldwide by sharing the avant-garde skin-care methods at the forefront of technology. “We strive to consistently create unique products and treatments enriched with active ingredients on the cutting edge of science and technology,” states Sabiya. “Our estheticians here at Guinot Gig Harbor have been trained at the French flagship Guinot Institut Paris.” Guinot is conscious of the environment’s fragility and is concerned about protecting it, thus, ethical beauty care is at the forefront. Products are never tested on animals; formulas are preserved without parabens, and active ingredients used are from non-GMO plants; and active treatment ingredients incorporated in the formulas are chosen in order to respect the environment—notably by sourcing them from renewable plants. A variety of treatments are offered including facials, anti-aging, soothing, brightening, purifying, and hydrating, peels, vitamin C treatments, selftanning/relaxation treatments, and more! They offer non-invasive lifting treatments using their Hydradermie Machine, which uses microcurrent to stimulate and lift the facial muscles. “Struggling with skin myself in the past, and knowing how frustrating it can be not knowing where to start or how to fix issues, I now love helping people improve their skin, and getting them to meet their skin-care goals. I want everyone to feel beautiful and confident going out every day!” smiles Sabiya.

Clients are sure to love the entire Guinot line just as much as Sabiya. “All the products I have used I love, but my go-to product that I have to wear every day has to be the Lift Summum Cream and the Bioxygene Serum I have been using for the past couple of years. I have seen an extreme transformation on my skin and have a natural glow from Guinot products. I won’t ever go back to any other skin-care line again!” And once you try Guinot products, neither will you! Not only do they have amazing machines for their facials, they also offer body-slimming with their amazing patented Techni-Spa machine. This machine helps reduce cellulite, and burn fat, and is guaranteed to

reduce circumferential body measurements. And clients see results within the first few treatments. Guinot also offers full-service waxing, brow tinting and makeup application, with their exclusive Master Colors Cosmetic line. Sabiya is grateful to have the opportunity to bring Guinot to her hometown, where she attended elementary through high school. “This is my home, and I love my community and the people I have got to know over the years of living here,” she says. “Not only that but the harbor is beautiful, and I’m grateful to be living in such a nice place.” And there’s more to look forward to, as Sabiya shares they are in the process of exploring additional locations in the next 12 to 18 months. For those seeking quality, innovative skin-care technology and treatment, it’s time to discover Guinot Institut Paris Spa right here in Gig Harbor. And for those who are interested in a Guinot career, Guinot has openings for estheticians who have a passion for skin care.

“Our estheticians here at Guinot Gig Harbor have been trained at the French flagship Guinot Institut Paris.” GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

RHINE RIVER CRUISE Hop Aboard a Rhine River Cruise by MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

I

was recently invited on a Press Trip to experience the Viking Egdir, one of the company’s newest longships launched earlier this year, on the Rhine Getaway itinerary. The eight-day cruise began in Basel, Switzerland, with stops in France, Germany and The Netherlands along the Rhine River. Each day brought exciting new discoveries as the ship passed charming villages plucked right from a storybook, vineyards crawling up hillsides, Gothic cathedrals, and even Dutch windmills. The highlight of the trip was the 40-mile stretch of the Rhine River between Koblenz and Bingen, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Egdir cruised past more than 20 medieval castles dating back to 966 and the delightful small towns surrounding them. It was such a magical experience. Pro Tip: Book your airfare through Viking and pay the extra $100 to $150 for Viking Air Plus, which allows you more options in selecting your flights and seats. With the current pilot shortage and frequent airline delays, you will have peace of mind as Viking provides a 24-hour hotline to use during your journey. The representatives work with the airlines and Viking to get you to your cruise. On my trip they even delayed our departure so a guest could make the cruise.

I truly enjoyed the culinary experiences on board the Viking Egdir. You have the option of dining in the Restaurant, the main dining venue, or the Aquavit Terrace that offers both indoor and outdoor seating depending on the weather. The same menu is offered at both locations. Each day there are classics that are always available, specials of the day and at dinner a regional menu based on where the ship is. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the chef accents meals from the onboard herb garden. I lost count of how many croissants I ate. Make sure to read the Viking Daily each day. The four-page newsletter has a detailed section of culinary information about the food specialties for your next destination. Viking provides so many opportunities to experience local favorites. I was able to enjoy a slice of Black Forest Cake at a restaurant in the Black Forest region. In the evenings there are optional excursions to local restaurants, pubs or wineries. I took a culinary walking tour of Strasbourg, France, and had the opportunity to eat and drink from local vendors and restaurants across the city. Onboard the ship, some of the cultural enrichment events were culinary with a food demonstration and the opportunity to taste a local delicacy.

Y A ST

My accommodation on the Viking Egdir was their Veranda Stateroom. One of the things I like about Viking is the brand consistency. Each Viking Longship is the same, so you know what to expect. I recommend the Veranda Stateroom, as it gives you extra space with the private veranda. The views are spectacular with a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door, versus one that pulls open, so you can enjoy fresh air in your cabin if you like. A nice feature is all the 110/220-volt outlets and USB ports. The Scandinavian design is thoughtfully engineered with plenty of storage space and a very comfortable bed with luxury linens. River cruising provides a more intimate experience with only 190 guests and 50 crew. You won’t find the spas and multiple dining options that are on ocean cruise ships, but I didn’t miss it. I enjoyed spending time on the sun deck with its 360-degree views of the Rhine River and a beautiful organic herb garden. There is plenty of comfortable seating in the lounge, which serves as the main common area as well as tucked around the ship.

DO

Viking provides one complimentary shore excursion for every port of call except for departure day. On arrival day there was an opportunity to take a Welcome Walk with a local guide through Basel. Each day the included excursion is either a bus tour or a walking tour. I was very impressed with the quality of the tours and the guides. Most days you can take the included tour in the morning and an optional one in the afternoon or evening. Guest services and the program director were flexible and able to arrange seats for a sold-out pub crawl when more guests wanted to go. Take advantage of the fact your ship docks right next to town. I was able to walk right off the ship and into Cologne, Germany, and a few other towns to explore. In Koblenz, Germany, I was able to enjoy a currywurst at a local imbiss (fast food hut) right next to the ship before walking over to catch the gondola high up a hill to the mighty fortress of Ehrenbreitstein. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. This was truly a memorable trip.

Hydration is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and nothing quenches your thirst like a tall glass of water. Whether you prefer cold or room temperature, it’s up to you. But … sometimes water needs a little kick to make it a bit more exciting.

A CLEAN COMPLEXION What you put into your body directly affects your outward appearance. And there’s no exception when it comes to water. A hydrated body means hydrated skin, and the most noticeable is your face. Water intake plus a good diet and beauty regimen will ensure your face, and the rest of your skin, look their best.

grapefruit Consuming grapefruit not only is hydrating but increases energy levels, aids in skin rejuvenation, improves eyesight and metabolism, helps build stronger nails and better hair, and is beneficial in many additional ways.

HUNGER CONTROL Water is known to aid in weight control. Dehydration is all too common among Americans, often resulting in hunger pains when in fact the body is in need of water. Make it a habit to start your morning off with a fresh glass of water, making sure to drink several ounces every hour or so, and more an hour or two before a meal, to help curb your appetite.

orange Oranges are rich with water (a medium orange provides 4 ounces of water). They are high in vitamin C and supply nutrients such as potassium and folate; a great antioxidant and source of fiber, and helps in collagen production, boosts the immune system and aids in iron absorption.

BRAIN POWER The human brain relies on proper hydration in order to function optimally. Research shows that dehydration can affect one’s focus and impair short-term memory function and the recall of long-term memory. Our bodies are constantly losing water. So when you feel like your brain power is struggling, water should be your first go-to solution.

lime

Loaded with nutrients, limes are known to help boost immunity, aid in iron absorption and promote healthy skin, among others. This sour yet fresh fruit is a great addition to a variety of drinks, especially water.
