ummertime. It seems like it arrives and then is gone all too soon. The long days, the warm air, the outdoor activities and celebrations that abound all throughout town; these are the days when families and friends, young and old, come together to enjoy each other’s company and cherish the time spent together, at a slower pace, while taking in the beautiful Northwest. Picnics in the park, a day out on the water, hiking the local trails, shopping the local farmers markets and attending muchloved community events … the summer months are meant for making memories.

See the summer through the eyes of a child, and make the time to explore and get dirty. Splash in the water. Take a nap. Eat watermelon. Build a sandcastle or mud pie. Get messy. making old new again Seeing the beauty in antique pieces by RACHEL KELLY

J

ust because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s done. If anything, it means that it’s stood the test of time. As styles have gone in and out, there are some pieces that stand out as being classic. It could be the lines of the piece that never go out of style, or its lasting practical use. Perhaps it’s that the object seems to carry with it a memory, a story. Maybe that table used to center in your grandmother’s kitchen, bearing the responsibility of feeding 20 farmhands for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe that jewelry box once held your mother’s wedding ring. Perhaps that hat stand was bought for your great grandfather by his childhood friend. Maybe those boots were made for walking, and there’s still plenty of journey left in them. Whatever the reason, whatever the story, here are six ways to give a new look to your favorite old pieces.

C h a n g e Yo u r P e r s p e c t i v e . Sometimes the best way to bring life to old things is to change what holds it. Whether this means giving those vintage pictures a new frame, placing an antique piece on a floating shelf, or placing it in an unconventional location. A great example would be plates hung on the wall or door handles used as hooks. There are lots of ways to keep unused pieces that are no longer needed for everyday use.

Change Its Purpose. The jug that used to carry water from the outdoor well just might make a great umbrella stand. The container that used to carry snuff might be great for pills. The door that used to hang in your family’s 100-year-old shed might be great as a backdrop for hooks that you can hang your bags from. The large picture frame might look great as a headboard, or the ladder might double as a blanket holder.

A S p l a s h o f C o l o r. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your old pieces. An old milking stool or basket can provide that much-needed pop of color in an otherwise earth tone (or white) home. Bright colors such as sun yellow, teal, fire engine red, aqua … whatever you like best. Everybody needs something that when they look at it, they can’t help but smile. Sometimes a little color is all you need.

G i v e I t a Wa s h . This is not meant to be a literal wash, although a clean slate is always best to work with. With old things comes a lot of wood color, which can mean a lot of different shades of wood in one place. Dipping a damp rag in white paint, and then rubbing the white along the surface of your old antique can preserve a classic look while allowing it to be more neutral.

Strip It Down. Some pieces really do need to retain their wood color to preserve their authenticity. However, as previously noted, a whole bunch of wood colors in one space may not be preferable. Stripping your old pieces down to their bare wood, and then re-staining them in matching stain brings much-needed congruence to a place filled with old pieces from different eras. If it’s got to be wood color, it might as well match.

Re-fit and Polish. There are some things that are simply not made the way they used to be. Like those big wing-backed wooden upholstered sofa chairs, or hundred-yearold chandeliers. There are some things that are right just the way they are, however, they may not be quite perfect as they are. In such a case, the best thing to do is to reupholster or shine to perfection. Some things just have good bones but need a little shine to highlight their original glory.

EDUCATION FOR SUCCESS LOCAL NONPROFIT BRIDGES THE G A P I N E D U C AT I O N

18 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE july/august 2022

“These stakeholders made it their mission—which became Arivva’s mission—to create a program Iike Bill Strickland had built in Pittsburgh. To transform lives in the most challenged neighborhoods of Pierce County by focusing on critical education and employment issues through artsbased youth development and industry-specific career training,” says Dr. Dan Bissonnette, the executive director of Arivva.

From that spark of inspiration came the concept of Arivva, which is an empowering educational nonprofit that resides here in Pierce County. From that day in 2013, the stakeholders held a comprehensive feasibility study, which led them to concentrate its efforts on Parkland and its surrounding areas. Over time, with much effort and research, they formed a board. They then incorporated as Pierce Center for Arts and Technology in 2016 (now known as Arivva) and achieved nonprofit status the following year. With early funding from Multicare Health Systems and State Farm, Arivva was able to hire Bissonnette as their executive director in 2018—whose job it is to bring the nonprofit from ideas to action. Arivva is in a unique position to “serve our students in a way that differs from other job training and visual arts programs. Much more than a program with rules and regulations that

n 2013, three individuals, who would later form the stakeholder group of the nonprofit Arivva, attended a conference to hear speaker Bill Strickland. Strickland is the founder of the Bidwell Education Model, which has seen much success in impacting marginalized and underserved members of the Pennsylvania Community. The Bidwell Education Model provides no-cost career-focused training to encourage success in its students. This learning model sculpts education for practical results.

Arivva certainly has high hopes for the future of its work, and for the benefit that accessible education can bring to any one community. students need to adhere to, we are more interested in our students’ lived experiences and supporting them to move toward success,” says Bissonnette. Arivva’s idea is to serve; their action is to provide quality, accessible education. With a researchbacked and people-forward approach, Arivva is in the process of doing just that. The past few years have seen a lot of development for Arivva. The first of programs being visual arts classes for highschoolers, classes which encourage creativity and innovation. These classes can be conveniently registered for online. Classes for transitioning adults are next in the works, continuing the trend of providing educational resources for people looking for well-paying and high in-demand work. Arivva is working to offer no-cost medical assistant certification and HVAC programs. Arivva also has a thriving after-school and summer visual arts programs where they offer courses in videography, ceramics, photography and visual arts. Unfortunately, much of their programs and goals have suffered through a hiatus due to Covid. While this has stopped some of the rapid inevitable growth of its educational programs, it has failed to stanch the flow of ideas from the board. Arivva hasn’t stopped dreaming and moving to see those dreams fulfilled. “We feel that our hopes and dreams have been delayed for some time now, and we look forward to so many things,” says Bissonnette.

EVERY DREAM, EVERY STEP FORWARD, REQUIRES COMMUNITY

SUPPORT AND FUNDING. It is no overstatement to say that Arivva certainly has high hopes for the future of its work, and for the benefit that accessible education can bring to any one community. Plans for the future include transforming their 100-yearold retail shop into a world-class facility for their visual arts programs. They strive for the day when their medical assistant laboratory and classroom spaces are ready to accept students, and not just in the works. Arivva also eventually hopes to build a community room, where individuals and organizations within Parkland can gather together. Cementing relationships, forging new ones, and encouraging a more cohesive community. A place where, together, Parkland is that much stronger. However, for a nonprofit, every dream, every step forward, requires community support and funding. Everything they do requires successful fundraising and relationships with friends willing to lend their time, talent and treasure toward creating success for local students. The future of Arivva relies on its community to push it forward. That being said, volunteers can find many opportunities to come alongside Arivva and the students of Parkland. Volunteers can contribute through aiding the after-school and summer education programs. This is an opportunity that enriches the lives of kids year-round. There are opportunities for those who are knowledgeable in construction to help transform their spaces into world-class harbors of learning, places meant to spur the human spirit toward success. This includes work on the community center and classrooms. The continued work of Arivva is unique in that it is motivated to capture the attention of the student who may think that they, mistakenly, do not belong. They are focused on reaching the students who think they cannot succeed and shouldn’t try. People who consider themselves to be on the sidelines when it comes to success, rather than on the road that progresses. This nonprofit

“IF WE WANT HUMANITY TO REACH ITS HIGHEST HEIGHT, FOR US AS PEOPLE TO FULFILL OUR GREATEST POTENTIAL, WE MUST FIND A WAY TO COME TOGETHER ENSURING THAT EVERYONE HAS A SEAT AT THE TABLE OF OPPORTUNITY.”

28 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE july/august 2022

K

wabi Amoah-Forson, humanitarian and founder of The Peace Bus, has long believed that people must choose to live together in harmony instead of hatred and division. In 2017, he decided to promote a message of peace in Tacoma. He started small with just two posters: one saying, “Love, Peace & Justice for All,” and the other, “War is not the Answer. Say NO to violence.” He set up in a local park and would engage visitors with his message. He now has transitioned to The Peace Bus, a baby blue 1988 Mitsubishi van that allows him to promote his message on the road. Kwabi’s goal is to travel the world promoting peace and to encourage people from all walks of life and beliefs to work together for the common good. Working together for the common good can help bridge the divide and polarization the United States is experiencing. Kwabi’s projects include ways to combat poverty, a barrier to peace. This summer he is working with local restaurants with his “Every-Kid-Eats.” The Child Food Insecurity Rate in Washington has increased 40 percent since the pandemic, and one in six children experiences hunger. This project will help to provide hot meals to Tacoma children throughout the summer months. Q. What prompted you to start your message of peace? A. While in grad school, I was feeling unfulfilled as ambiguity surrounded the direction I would take for my future, so I reached out to an old academic advisor from undergrad. His name was Peter Bacho. I told him that I was struggling, and he told me that I need to stop asking myself what I want to be and start asking myself who do I want to be. He said I need to ask myself about the ethics, morals and guidelines in which I would want to live my life by. He told me that is who you are. Think about these things, and once you understand, everything will fall into place.

height, for us as people to fulfill our greatest potential, we must find a way to come together ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table of opportunity.

After doing some soul searching, I realized that what I love most about life is seeing people from different walks of life coming together for a positive cause. It gives me chills thinking about it, it is so beautiful, it is everything to me. I thought, “What is that?” And to me it is peace. Since then, I’ve dedicated my life to peace advocacy and humanitarianism.

Q. You hold an MBA from City University of Seattle. How have your business skills impacted your volunteer work?

Q. We are seeing so much discord in our country. Can people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs come together for greater good? A. Yes, I not only believe that people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs can come together, I believe that it’s a must for humanity! If we want humanity to reach its highest

There’s a remedy to creating a more peaceful world, and I believe that it involves addressing poverty, racism, and lack of quality education for our children. These injustices, if corrected, would work to create a better quality of life for all and set the foundation for peace.

A. In business school I fell in love with the concept of marketing. I was intrigued on how organizations, companies and people can use words, aesthetic, video and photo to tell stories that invoke interest. I’m pretty good at marketing myself, and I continue to use the skill to promote peace and awareness. Q. Can you share with our readers the impact your mom had on you becoming a community leader?

A. My mom was my foundation growing up. A prime example of love at work. As a former school counselor, now retired, she helped her many students find clarity and vision for their lives. She did well to teach my brother and I about African American history, sharing examples of the many successes of individuals who looked like me. This home education subconsciously guided me in my belief of selflove and courage. Q. Your latest project is “Every-Kid-Eats.” How can our readers support your mission? A. Readers can Support the “Every-Kid-Eats” Campaign in two ways: Readers can buy “The Peace Bus with Kwabi shirt” by ETC. A percentage of the proceeds made from each T-shirt purchase will go toward helping feed hungry kids in our city. Shirts can be purchased on the ETC website and at their store (116 South 9th Street, Tacoma, WA 98402). They can also donate directly to the campaign through the official GoFundMe page for “Every-KidEats.” Link to the GoFundMe can be found at ThePeaceBus.org and @thepeacebus Instagram page, link in the bio!

THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET E AT R I G H T, LIVE WELL by Rachel Kelly

30 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE july/august 2022

july/august 2022 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

31

S

ome of the oldest people in the world, with the highest quality of life, live in the Mediterranean. This could be in large part to their active lifestyle; the people of Greece and Italy walk and bike everywhere as well as spend a lot of time outdoors. This could be because of their deep connection to family; the people of the Mediterranean are interconnected to their family and friends and often live with several generations under one roof. It is also true that culturally, the people within the Mediterranean stick to rhythms that encourage them to connect to their greater community. However, their rich lifestyle of lifelong health is believed to be mostly attributed to their diet. The Mediterranean is known for its cultural roots that encourage high-quality foods, eating within season, eating locally according to what’s available, gardening, and responsibly caring for the animals and animal products that they consume. The Mediterranean diet is modeled after this way of living and encourages a healthy dietary pattern that is sustainable as a lifestyle. This means that diets such as the Mediterranean diet are more a way of life, versus a strict standard that forces weight loss; weight that once lost returns once you return to daily living. Research shows that the Mediterranean diet can lower chances for cardiovascular diseases, prevent certain types of cancer, and it can have a positive impact on mental health. If we are to assume that the people of the Mediterranean live a long life in part because of their diet, there is also the added benefit of living long. The goal of such a diet is not to look perfect but to live within the weight that is healthy for your body type. To help you to feel good, versus craft a body that is “presentable.” The goal here is long life, lived well, surrounded by those you love. In light of that, what is the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet is pretty straight forward, crafted around local Mediterranean cuisine. It emphasizes fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes; things like peas, lentils, all different types of dried beans, tomatoes, and leafy greens. It includes low or nonfat dairy products, fish, poultry, nontropical vegetable oils and nuts. So, palm oil and coconut oil are out, while peanut oil, avocado oil and olive oil are acceptable. Olive oil is especially encouraged as a source of healthy fats. Freshly pressed, olive oil is considered to be more of a condiment than an oil and has a variety of uses in all types of cuisine. As expected, this diet limits sugary foods, highly processed foods, and foods high in sodium.

EATING WITHIN SEASON Lightly processed foods, such as quality cheeses, are allowed. Foods that have a (relatively) ample amount of salt aren’t prohibited in any way, just foods that contain high levels of sodium. Foods that are high in sodium are generally preserved and highly processed; sodium becomes easier to avoid as long as highly processed foods are limited. The reason that the Mediterranean diet has been proven to work so well is because it mimics the natural flow of what our bodies derive from nature and suggests ingredients that have been proven to encourage healthy habits for generations. It is for this reason that there are other diets that also work in much the same way that the Mediterranean diet does. Diets such as the DASH diet are also considered to be healthy for lifelong use. DASH, or the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, is a diet that allows for more dairy and meat and doesn’t restrict healthy fats to ingestion of olive oil. True to its name, the DASH diet helps lower blood pressure by focusing on foods that are high in potassium, calcium and magnesium. This means that under the DASH diet one can eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, lentils, dairy and lean meats all in balance and moderation. 34 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE july/august 2022

Diets such as Paleo, Keto, or Whole 30 are surprisingly not on this list. Not because they don’t yield results! The Keto Diet can be great for someone who is suffering from diabetes, and the Whole 30 diet can be great for helping someone overcome bad habitual eating. However, these diets are not considered heart healthy, nor are they approved for lifetime adherence. In any diet, the focus should always be on quality over quantity. Foods high in nutrition are the primary focus, versus foods that satisfy quickly but ultimately go unused by the body. That being said, our bodies need all kinds of foods, versus strict restrictions, to get the variety of nutrients that it needs for overall health. For instance, breads and pastas are widely eaten in sustainable diets because carbohydrates are good for quick bursts of energy. Carbohydrates are balanced in moderation by fresh and cooked fruits and vegetables, as are part of a meal. Eating well isn’t so much about focusing on eating one thing and not eating another, but eating everything all together. For instance, pasta is usually eaten with pasta sauce, which usually incorporates a variety of vegetables with a moderate amount of meat. Taken all together, a healthy diet focuses on the whole plate. In turn, from head to toe, the whole body is well fed.

A CLEAN COMPLEXION

Hydration is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and nothing quenches your thirst like a tall glass of water. Whether you prefer cold or room temperature, it’s up to you. But … sometimes water needs a little kick to make it a bit more exciting. With fresh summer produce in abundance, and all of those local farmers markets to shop, be sure to make a point to select some fruits that you can add to your glass and give you a whole new appreciation for that daily staple—water. In addition to the list below,

What you put into your body directly affects your outward appearance. And there’s no exception when it comes to water. A hydrated body means hydrated skin, and the most noticeable is your face. Water intake plus a good diet and beauty regimen will ensure your face, and the rest of your skin, look their best.

cucumber, ginger and mint will surely up your water-intake game.

raspberry Rich in anti-aging antioxidants and vitamin C, high in fiber and low in sugar, raspberries are truly one of nature’s most delicate, versatile and delicious berries—sweet with a tart undertone. Nutrients offer disease prevention to healthy skin.

orange Oranges are rich with water (a medium orange provides 4 ounces of water). They are high in vitamin C and supply nutrients such as potassium and folate; a great antioxidant and source of fiber, and helps in collagen production, boosts the immune system and aids in iron absorption.

lime Loaded with nutrients, limes are known to help boost immunity, aid in iron absorption and promote healthy skin, among others. This sour yet fresh fruit is a great addition to a variety of drinks, especially water.

HUNGER CONTROL Water is known to aid in weight control. Dehydration is all too common among Americans, often resulting in hunger pains when in fact the body is in need of water. Make it a habit to start your morning off with a fresh glass of water, making sure to drink several ounces every hour or so, and more an hour or two before a meal, to help curb your appetite.

BRAIN POWER The human brain relies on proper hydration in order to function optimally. Research shows that dehydration can affect one’s focus and impair short-term memory function and the recall of longterm memory. Our bodies are constantly losing water. So when you feel like your brain power is struggling, water should be your first go-to solution.

INCREASED ENERGY Water has various benefits, from increasing your metabolism to promoting healthy skin. The more water you consume, the better your body will function. As water and energy are intertwined, the next time you’re feeling fatigued, reach for that H2O. Your body will thank you, and you’ll feel more energized throughout the day.

strawberry

This bright, acidic citrus food fruit is high in vitamin C, rich in vitamin A, folate, and other vitamins and minerals. Lemons balance ph levels as well. Enjoy a glass of lemon water to boost your energy, increase immunity and to help fight off infection, cold and flu.

Consuming grapefruit not only is hydrating but increases energy levels, aids in skin rejuvenation, improves eyesight and metabolism, helps build stronger nails and better hair, and is beneficial in many additional ways.

Packed full of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C and K, folate, potassium, manganese and magnesium, strawberries are a summer favorite not only for their beautiful appearance and sweet taste but also for their health benefits.

s a spiritual healer, speaker and teacher, I see patterns in what people are focused on, the themes in their stories, collective interests, the struggles they are overcoming, the pain they are surrendering, and the love they are building for themselves. Most recent journeys have been filled with high impact emotions, massive life transformations, all leading to a reality we are choosing, and it is coming in many different forms. We are looking at our lives and seeing the wreckage of the past and striving to leave it behind. We are laboring on our souls to get comfortable with the real us. We are making choices to look at traumas from the past, not hiding from them, not being stuck in them, nor defined by them, but acknowledging them, so we no longer feel stuck in stories from long ago. People are embracing choice of who they are today, not who they were, or told they were. They are working to see the realities of who people are in their orbit, dangerous or supportive, and this is why body language techniques and talk of psychology and mental health are surging in the minds of the population. People are seeking not only to understand themselves in this manner but

see warning signs of others who are unstable, unconfident, and wish to find a source to control. People in essence are owning their power more than ever before and are refusing to allow a false reality about themselves to be part of their new transformation. The name of the game is EMPOWERMENT! The Current Human Healing Index: • People are engaging their shadow self of the past, and the self they are creating. • People are willing to work hard on themselves to make profound changes. • People are searching to understand reality choices in new ways that define their empowerment. • People are opening up intuitive gifts that have long been in a box. • People are seeking others in alignment with their purpose through friendships and community. • Healers are uniting in goodwill to collectively help people, animals and our planet. • People are feeling gratitude for their life despite the hardships and traumas that come with life, especially in the last two years.

SUFANI GARZA

• People are realizing the work they have done has given them an unshakable core to happiness.

pened November of last year by owners Chris Haque and his daughter Sabiya Haque, Guinot Institut Paris Spa invites residents and visitors to Gig Harbor to step into this exclusive spa—only the second Guinot in the United States! “We are so excited to bring this spa to Gig Harbor,” shares Sabiya, lead esthetician at the spa. “Guinot of Paris is the number one skin-care brand in Paris, and it is incredible that we can now offer this top-of-the-line product here in the states. Many will travel long distances just to be able to have access to the treatments we offer here in Gig Harbor.” Guinot was founded more than four decades ago by well-known chemist Rene Guinot and is the number one skin-care brand and spa in all of Europe. “Guinot is the perfect blend of a day spa/med spa,” affirms Sabiya. “We have so many amazing treatments to offer that are loved worldwide. Most people who travel and go out of the country recognize, and get excited, that Guinot is here in Gig Harbor! The product is 100 percent going to be loved by everyone—and the results speak for themselves.” The vision of Guinot is simple: to be the number one skin-care treatment brand worldwide by sharing the avant-garde skin-care methods at the forefront of technology. “We strive to consistently create unique products and treatments enriched with active ingredients on the cutting edge of science and technology,” states Sabiya. “Our estheticians here at Guinot Gig Harbor have been trained at the French flagship Guinot Institut Paris.” Guinot is conscious of the environment’s fragility and is concerned about protecting it, thus, ethical beauty care is at the forefront. Products are never tested on animals; formulas are preserved without parabens, and active ingredients used are from non-GMO plants; and active treatment ingredients incorporated in the formulas are chosen in order to respect the environment—notably by sourcing them from renewable plants. A variety of treatments are offered including facials, anti-aging, soothing, brightening, purifying, and hydrating, peels, vitamin C treatments, self-tanning/relaxation

treatments, and more! They offer non-invasive lifting treatments using their Hydradermie Machine, which uses microcurrent to stimulate and lift the facial muscles. “Struggling with skin myself in the past, and knowing how frustrating it can be not knowing where to start or how to fix issues, I now love helping people improve their skin, and getting them to meet their skin-care goals. I want everyone to feel beautiful and confident going out every day!” smiles Sabiya. Clients are sure to love the entire Guinot line just as much as Sabiya. “All the products I have used I love, but my go-to product that I have to wear every day has to be the Lift Summum Cream and the Bioxygene Serum I have been using for the past couple of years. I have seen an extreme transformation on my skin and have a natural glow from Guinot products. I won’t ever go back to any other skin-care line again!” And once you try Guinot products, neither will you! Not only do they have amazing machines for their facials, they also offer body-slimming with their amazing patented Techni-Spa machine. This machine helps reduce cellulite, and burn fat, and is guaranteed to reduce circumferential body measurements. And clients see results within the first few treatments. Guinot also offers full-service waxing, brow tinting and makeup application, with their exclusive Master Colors Cosmetic line. Sabiya is grateful to have the opportunity to bring Guinot to her hometown, where she attended elementary through high school. “This is my home, and I love my community and the people I have got to know over the years of living here,” she says. “Not only that but the harbor is beautiful, and I’m grateful to be living in such a nice place.” And there’s more to look forward to, as Sabiya shares they are in the process of exploring additional locations in the next 12 to 18 months. For those seeking quality, innovative skin-care technology and treatment, it’s time to discover Guinot Institut Paris Spa right here in Gig Harbor. And for those who are interested in a Guinot career, Guinot has openings for estheticians who have a passion for skin care.

RHINE RIVER CRUISE Hop Aboard a Rhine River Cruise by MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

RHINE RIVER CRUISE I was recently invited on a Press Trip to experience the Viking Egdir, one of the company’s newest longships launched earlier this year, on the Rhine Getaway itinerary. The eight-day cruise began in Basel, Switzerland, with stops in France, Germany and The Netherlands along the Rhine River. Each day brought exciting new discoveries as the ship passed charming villages plucked right from a storybook, vineyards crawling up hillsides, Gothic cathedrals, and even Dutch windmills. The highlight of the trip was the 40-mile stretch of the Rhine River between Koblenz and Bingen, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Egdir cruised past more than 20 medieval castles dating back to 966 and the delightful small towns surrounding them. It was such a magical experience. Pro Tip: Book your airfare through Viking and pay the extra $100 to $150 for Viking Air Plus, which allows you more options in selecting your flights and seats. With the current pilot shortage and frequent airline delays, you will have peace of mind as Viking provides a 24-hour hotline to use during your journey. The representatives work with the airlines and Viking to get you to your cruise. On my trip they even delayed our departure so a guest could make the cruise. EAT I truly enjoyed the culinary experiences on board the Viking Egdir. You have the option of dining in the Restaurant, the main dining venue, or the Aquavit Terrace that offers both indoor and outdoor seating depending on the weather. The same menu is offered at both locations. Each day there are classics that are always available, specials of the day and at dinner a regional menu based on where the ship is. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the chef accents meals from the onboard herb garden. I lost count of how many croissants I ate. Make sure to read the Viking Daily each day. The four-page newsletter has a detailed section of culinary information about the food specialties for your next destination. Viking provides so many opportunities to experience local favorites. I was able to enjoy a slice of Black Forest Cake at a restaurant in the Black Forest region. In the evenings there are optional excursions to local restaurants, pubs or wineries. I took a culinary walking tour of Strasbourg, France, and had the opportunity to eat and drink from local vendors and restaurants across the city. Onboard the ship, some of the cultural enrichment events were culinary with a food demonstration and the opportunity to taste a local delicacy.

STAY

My accommodation on the Viking Egdir was their Veranda Stateroom. One of the things I like about Viking is the brand consistency. Each Viking Longship is the same, so you know what to expect. I recommend the Veranda Stateroom, as it gives you extra space with the private veranda. The views are spectacular with a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door, versus one that pulls open, so you can enjoy fresh air in your cabin if you like. A nice feature is all the 110/220-volt outlets and USB ports. The Scandinavian design is thoughtfully engineered with plenty of storage space and a very comfortable bed with luxury linens. River cruising provides a more intimate experience with only 190 guests and 50 crew. You won’t find the spas and multiple dining options that are on ocean cruise ships, but I didn’t miss it. I enjoyed spending time on the sun deck with its 360-degree views of the Rhine River and a beautiful organic herb garden. There is plenty of comfortable seating in the lounge, which serves as the main common area as well as tucked around the ship. 62 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE july/august 2022

DO

Viking provides one complimentary shore excursion for every port of call except for departure day. On arrival day there was an opportunity to take a Welcome Walk with a local guide through Basel. Each day the included excursion is either a bus tour or a walking tour. I was very impressed with the quality of the tours and the guides. Most days you can take the included tour in the morning and an optional one in the afternoon or evening. Guest services and the program director were flexible and able to arrange seats for a sold-out pub crawl when more guests wanted to go. Take advantage of the fact your ship docks right next to town. I was able to walk right off the ship and into Cologne, Germany, and a few other towns to explore. In Koblenz, Germany, I was able to enjoy a currywurst at a local imbiss (fast food hut) right next to the ship before walking over to catch the gondola high up a hill to the mighty fortress of Ehrenbreitstein. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. This was truly a memorable trip.
