chieving financial stability doesn’t happen overnight — it takes a journey. And, as with every journey, you’ll need to make some stops along the way. These stops, or milestones, can tell you how far you’ve gone — and where
Milestone 1: Build a foundation
When you’re first starting on your financial journey — typically, when you are beginning your career — you’ll want to build a foundation by acting on key issues, such as saving, paying down debts, and investing for the future. Here
•Start your emergency fund. Eventually, you’d like to have several months’ worth of living expenses kept in a liquid, low-risk account to deal with unexpected costs, such as large medical bills or a major car repair. For now, though, at least try to put away a few hundred dollars or a month’s worth of expenses. To make it easier, have some money moved automatically each month from a checking or savings account into your emergency fund.
•Take your employer’s match. Contribute enough to your 401(k) and health savings account (HSA) to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.
•Pay down your higher-rate debt. Try to pay down as much high-interest, non-deductible debt as you can afford. If possible, refinance debt at lower interest rates.
Milestone 2: Gain a better foothold
Once you have your financial foundation in place and you’re established in your career, consider these steps to gain an even better foothold:
•Continue building your emergency fund. Try to get at least a couple of months’ expenses in this fund.
•Put more into your retirement accounts. If possible, try to allocate anywhere from 10% to 15% of your gross income into your 401(k) or a similar employer-sponsored retirement plan.
•Check your debt-to-income ratio. Divide your monthly debt payments by your monthly gross income to calculate your debt-to-income ratio. If you’re paying a mortgage, try to keep this ratio to 35% or less. Without a mortgage, try for 20% or less.
Milestone 3: Keep moving forward
As you move into your middle years — and beyond — it’s time to solidify your financial situation further and keep making progress toward a comfortable retirement. These moves can help:
•Maintain your emergency fund. By now, you should be able to keep up to six months’ worth of expenses in your emergency fund. A sizable emergency fund can help you if you need to switch jobs, and enable you to meet larger expenses without dipping into your longterm investments.
•Review your retirement goals. At this stage of your life, you should review your retirement goals regularly to determine whether you’re still on track toward meeting them. If you aren’t, you may need to adjust your investment strategies. Of course, your goals may have changed over time, and this, too, may require adjustments on your part. You may want to work with a financial professional who can suggest appropriate moves to help you on your way.
Reaching these milestones will take diligence and commitment, but the effort will be worth it, helping you on your journey to financial stability.

Each summer, the Festival at Sandpoint transforms North Idaho into a haven for live music lovers. Set against the backdrop of Lake Pend Oreille and the Selkirk Mountains, this beloved event blends world-class performances with local pride, creating a one-of-a-kind experience that captures the heart of the Sandpoint community.
Q.How would you describe the spirit and experience of the Festival at Sandpoint?
As you approach the venue, the air is filled with palpable excitement and anticipation, mingling with the sounds of laughter and chatter from fellow concertgoers. Whether you're lounging on a blanket, sipping a cold drink, or dancing with friends, the Festival at Sandpoint offers an unforgettable experience where people of all ages come together to celebrate music, culture, and the natural splendor surrounding them. It's a place where memories are made, and the spirit of summer comes alive.
Q.The Festival has a rich history. Could you share how it began and what it has become today?
Since 1983, when the first series of performances was held at Schweitzer, the Festival at Sandpoint has expanded our musical offerings to include a variety of genres, including country, rock, pop, folk, and more. Alongside moving the events that now take place at War Memorial Field, our capacity has grown to allow more guests to attend our performances. To provide accessible music education to our community, the Festival offers year-round music education programs, including outreach to pre-K through elementary students, a free instrument lending library, and a youth string orchestra. We are currently actively growing our partnership with Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) to better support their music program, and expanding our scholarship opportunities and ticket outreach program.
Q.What makes War Memorial Field such a special place for artists and guests?
The Festival at Sandpoint’s location, nestled amidst the stunning landscape of the Selkirk Mountains and the serene beauty of Lake Pend Oreille, makes it a truly special place for artists to perform and for guests to experience live music.
Q.How is the lineup selected, and what goes into creating such a memorable season?
Our booking team starts the process of booking artists for the following Summer Series over a year in advance. We strive to offer a diverse selection of genres to cater to a wide range of audiences, ensuring there is something for everyone. We also take into account the artist requests we receive through our email newsletter and social media platforms over the years, in an effort to offer performances that our community members would like to see. While a lot of the process is up to chance and depends on how tours are routed through, our team puts a lot of effort into creating a series that our entire community can enjoy.
Q.In what ways does the Sandpoint community help bring the Festival to life each year?
We are incredibly grateful for the community support of the event, hundreds of volunteers, and the contributions from local families and businesses that help make a festival of this caliber possible in rural
North Idaho. Whether you are reuniting with old friends or just enjoying the shared experience of live music with strangers, you can’t help but feel the magic of the Festival and the community.
Q.Beyond the music, what other experiences and traditions can guests look forward to?
When guests aren’t busy dancing or mingling with friends, they can visit one of our various Festival Street food vendors, providing several options: barbecue, charcuterie, Mediterranean, and much more! They can also stop by one of our two on-site bar locations and enjoy one of our signature drinks, including a local favorite, the Tito’s Huckleberry Lemonade!
Q.What are you most excited about at this year’s Festival? Are there any new additions?
This year, we are adding an additional “Community Night” on Wednesday, July 30. It will feature four musicians who are local to North Idaho: Jojo Dodge, Harold’s IGA, Brittany’s House, and The Real McCoy.
As a major proponent of live music, we are excited to provide an opportunity for local musicians to perform on the Festival at Sandpoint stage and introduce the local community to the amazing talent in our region at an affordable price.
Q.What does being part of Sandpoint’s summer tradition mean to you and your team?
Our team is proud and honored to be part of an annual summer tradition that brings people of all ages together to celebrate music. Many of our team members were born and raised in Sandpoint and have grown up with the Festival at Sandpoint, which allows us to truly understand the impact that this annual event has on the community.

Located at 100 Oneida Drive in Ponderay, Idaho, the Field of Dreams Recreation Complex is a 50-acre facility created from a vision decades in the making. A dream that began over 30 years ago has become a reality for Bonner County, introducing a beautiful new space for all ages to play, grow, and engage with their community.
Introduced as a phased project supported by Ponderay’s 1% Local Option Tax, the Field of Dreams is a multi-phase sports and recreation project designed to accommodate flexible spaces for community recreation. These include sports courts for pickleball, tennis, baseball and basketball, plus batting cages and bullpens. Once complete, the facility will include a pavilion, picnic plazas, a playground, and space for food truck parking, along with restrooms, concession stands, and more.
The first phase, completed in August of 2024, revealed multiple fully lit artificial turf sports fields designed to accommodate a variety of sports for all ages, plus a completed restroom and concessions facility.
According to findings by the city of Ponderay, the vision for the Field of Dreams Recreation complex dates back to 1993, when two members of the Sandpoint Soccer Association, Floyd McGhee and Mike Read, shared their vision for a regional sports complex in Ponderay. Their vision for the McGhee Sports Complex turned into the project that we now call the Field of Dreams.
In 1994, the North Idaho/Ponderay Youth Sports Association formed as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to create the sports complex McGhee and Read envisioned, establishing the "Field of Dreams" on donated farmland in 1995, which hosted its first event that June.
Despite initial success, development costs and a lack of irrigation led to difficulties moving the project forward. In 2011, Ponderay acquired the property, and after years of planning and funding efforts, including a local option tax passed in 2019, Phase 1 of the Field of Dreams development began construction in 2023.
The next phases of the project will introduce more of the Field of Dreams' facilities and recreational offerings, including plans for a playground, tennis courts, baseball field, sand volleyball fields, multiuse trails, and more. A third phase has the potential to expand further on the property’s picnic areas, field house and event center; it is also expected to introduce additional exciting features like an indoor pool and ice skating rink.
The possibilities for community fun, athletics and engagement with the Field of Dreams are endless, thanks to the support of community members working together toward a shared vision.
The decades-long vision of Ponderay residents is becoming realized, and the results are said to be better than imagined. An investment in the quality of life for the youth and families of the area, the Field of Dreams offers something priceless: a safe place for kids to gather and play, along with a dedicated space for families to enjoy their time together.
The Field of Dreams is aptly named, representing local visionaries' dreams becoming reality, in benefit of the entire community. Follow along at CityofPonderay.org/field-of-dreams with the City of Ponderay as more of the Field of Dreams project comes to life!
Backyard ideas to turn your Sandpoint home into a summer retreat
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
Summer in Sandpoint is made for staying outside. But what if you could bring the best parts of a lakeside escape into your own backyard? Whether your ideal day includes a nap in the shade, a book in hand, or a laid-back dinner with friends, designing a staycation space is about comfort, ease, and style. With a few creative updates, you can craft a space that invites relaxation, sparks connection, and lets you enjoy every long July day and night.
Here are five ways to create a relaxing summer retreat—without ever leaving home.
THE HAMMOCK HIDEAWAY
For the one who dreams of swaying under the trees with a cool breeze and zero obligations, the Hammock Hideaway is your go-to. Choose a shaded spot between trees or use a freestanding frame. Add string lights overhead, a small outdoor rug underneath, and a side table for drinks or a speaker. Light a citronella candle to keep the bugs away, and you’ve got the perfect place for napping, reading, or just listening to the breeze.
To elevate the experience, hang a sunshade or sheer outdoor curtain on one side to filter light and for added privacy. Choose a hammock in a bright color or classic canvas stripe to make the space feel styled, not scrappy.
Must-have: A cozy hammock with pillows and a lightweight throw blanket for evening lounging.
THE GARDEN ESCAPE
This is for the Sandpoint local who finds joy in blooms and bees. Whether it’s a flower border, raised herb beds, or a secret bench nestled among lavender and daisies, the Garden Escape is equal parts productive and peaceful. Start by adding stepping stones through your garden, solar lights for the path, and a watering can that doubles as decor.
If space is limited, consider using vertical planters or grouping a few overflowing containers together. For added decoration, fill a vintage wheelbarrow or canoe with soil and annuals as a creative centerpiece.
You can even plant an area with pollinator-friendly species to support bees and butterflies—think coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and milkweed. Surround the space with the scent of rosemary, basil, and mint, and you’ll never want to leave.
Must-have: A quiet bench or bistro set tucked among the plants.
Sometimes, the best seat in the house is just a few feet from your front door. Dress up your porch with layered rugs, comfortable chairs or a loveseat, and cushions in breezy colors. Hang a set of outdoor curtains for a coastal cabana vibe, and bring out a few potted plants to soften the edges.
Add a ceiling fan if your porch has a covered structure—it makes a big difference on still summer days. Don’t forget a tray for morning coffee or evening drinks—this is your daily front-row seat to Sandpoint’s summer rhythms.
Must-have: A rocker or glider, paired with a table for two.
Stock tank pools have become a DIY favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Affordable, easy to install, and surprisingly stylish, they’re the perfect chill-out feature for hot July days. Surround your tank with pea gravel or decking, hang string lights above, and add a few low chairs or a lounge area with towels and refreshments nearby.
Whether it’s just for you or a fun family hangout, this setup brings serious vacation vibes. Want to go a step further? Add a floating drink tray, outdoor speakers, or even an outdoor shower for rinse-offs.
Must-have: A galvanized steel stock tank and a patio umbrella for shade.
Sandpoint’s long summer evenings are perfect for slow dinners outdoors. Create a dedicated dining area with a table that seats four to six, surrounded by lanterns, candles, or overhead string lights. Choose unbreakable tableware, layer a runner or tablecloth, and clip a few fresh herbs or flowers for a natural centerpiece.
Set the mood with background music—classical guitar, acoustic folk, or even some old vinyl playing through a Bluetooth speaker. The focus isn’t on gourmet meals; it’s about slowing down and enjoying time together. Even a casual picnic on a blanket can feel elevated in the right setting.
Must-have: Soft lighting and a table setup that invites people to stay awhile.
You don’t need a complete backyard remodel to embrace the season. A few thoughtful updates—some lights, a hammock, a new chair, or a flower pot— can shift your outdoor space from basic to blissful. Start with what you have, choose one corner to transform, and let it grow from there.
You can even mix and match these ideas. Imagine a twilight dinner followed by a hammock nap, or a stock tank soak after a morning spent tending your garden. That’s the beauty of a well-designed home retreat—it flexes with your mood and makes the most of where you are.
This July, skip the travel stress and rediscover the magic of home. In Sandpoint, the best summer memories are often made right where you are.
Wine4U is breathing new life into Sandpoint’s wine scene with a fresh brand, a stylish new storefront, and a mission to offer more than just bottles—it’s about the experience Located at 1309 Ponderosa Drive with plenty of parking and easy access, Wine4U has grown from a successful wine club into a full-service boutique wine shop and tasting destination. Inside, you’ll find a curated mix of wines, gourmet gifts, and local charm— all thoughtfully arranged to invite discovery. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to browse, sip, and come back to often.
“I really wanted to elevate my business,” says owner Beth Giacomo. “Opening a shop with gourmet items, gifts, gift baskets, wine clubs, and great wines all in one place—I felt I needed a new look to show how far we’ve come.”
That evolution is clear the moment you step inside. From artfully arranged wines to imported chocolates, crackers, and gourmet condiments, the shop offers an immersive experience. “Sandpoint hasn’t had a wine shop for 10 years,” Beth shares. “Everything I carry, I’ve tasted and personally selected. My goal is to offer customers a wine experience they might not have had before.”
The focus is on exclusivity, not just in terms of price, but also in intention. Grocery store brands aren’t stocked here (unless specifically requested), and the shelves invite patrons to discover wines they didn’t know they were missing. Guests are encouraged to sip as they shop or relax on the patio with a glass in hand.
Wine4U isn’t just a wine shop—it’s a hidden gem with plenty of parking, a curated selection, and a welcoming vibe. Beth wants the community to know it’s open and thriving. Stay in the loop through the newsletter, which shares updates on events, tastings, and travel. Planning a celebration? Wine4U is available for private events—just reach out to make the space your own.
While the shop doesn’t serve food, guests are welcome to bring their own bites, and Beth continues expanding her gourmet inventory. “I just returned from a wine tour in Italy and have been bringing in some of the gourmet products we had there,” she says. “I’m especially excited for some balsamic vinegars that pair beautifully with our other offerings.”
The Wine4U wine club has also grown, now offering multiple tiers and creative themes. “The club has evolved several times—I now offer $40 and $70 levels. The Bubbles of the Quarter and Library of the Quarter are gaining interest,” Beth says. Monthly tastings help drive that growth. Held every third Monday at Baxter’s Backdoor, these events introduce both members and newcomers to new wines and styles. “As customers try more of what I offer, they become more interested in joining the club for access to unique and fun selections.”
Pop-up tastings and special events also fill the shop’s calendar, often featuring winemakers and winery reps. This summer brings tastings with Mercer Winery (July 16), Rombauer (July 26), and Grosgrain from Walla Walla (August 27). Weekly Happy Hours on Thursdays and Fridays, 4 - 6 pm, and Mimosa & Spritz Saturdays, 11 am - 3 pm, offer locals the perfect excuse to unwind.
Though in-person experiences are now the focus, Wine4U’s website remains a convenient hub for online orders and event news. And more adventures await. After a successful food and wine tour through Italy, Wine4U is planning more international journeys. “We’re targeting South America for fall 2026,” Beth says. “But don’t count out France in the spring— it’s still on the table. Our goal is to offer one or two trips a year.”
And coming this July is the launch of The Wine Collective—a brand-new membership inspired by the classic beer mug club, but for wine lovers.
“My mission is to elevate your wine experience,” Beth says. “My goal is to awaken your passion with wine, friends, and food.”
Whether you’re shopping for a gift, planning a party, or just exploring new wines, Wine4U invites you to sip, shop, and stay awhile.

In Sandpoint, Idaho, the American dream is shifting. It’s no longer just about the home—it’s about the land. More people are seeking a lifestyle rooted in nature, privacy, and self-reliance, and acreage has become just as important as square footage.
Whether it’s for gardening, space to roam, or future building potential, buyers today are looking beyond the backyard—and reshaping the local real estate market in the process.
Remote work has untethered many from big-city job centers, giving them the freedom to choose quality of life over time spent commuting. That’s brought new attention to places like Sandpoint, where fresh air, big views, and breathing room are in abundance.
Buyers aren’t just looking for homes—they’re looking for usable land. Five acres, ten, even twenty. Real estate agents say many buyers will trade interior upgrades for extra room outdoors. Gardens, chicken coops, greenhouses, and privacy are topping the wish lists.
While some buyers are still drawn to lakefront cabins or ski condos, others are looking for something different: space, quiet, and a little more self-sufficiency. It’s not just luxury buyers either—first-time homebuyers are increasingly considering land as a long-term investment, whether that means placing a manufactured home or slowly building out their dream homestead.

Fixer-uppers with acreage are gaining appeal, especially for those willing to invest sweat equity in exchange for freedom and a lifestyle change.
Several factors are behind this shift toward land-rich properties:
• Privacy & peace: Noise, neighbors, and crowds are prompting urban flight.
• Remote work flexibility: People no longer have to be near major job centers.
• Preparedness culture: A desire to be self-reliant has led to increased interest in off-grid living, solar power, and food production.
• Wellness & nature: Space to roam, garden, and connect with nature has become a lifestyle essential.
Local builders say they’re seeing more requests for homes designed to complement the land, featuring strategic orientations for passive solar heating, natural wood and stone finishes, and water catchment systems for irrigation.
The shift toward land comes with new questions: Is there a well? Septic? What’s the zoning? Is the road plowed in winter? What’s the solar exposure?
More buyers are also asking about Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)— secondary housing like guest houses, backyard cottages, or mother-inlaw suites. ADUs provide flexibility for housing a family, generating rental income, or creating a separate workspace or studio. They’ve become a key consideration for those looking to maximize the potential of their property.
Connectivity is another factor. Satellite options, such as Starlink, have improved rural internet access; however, not all properties are equally equipped. Buyers are weighing access to town, nearby services, and the resale potential of remote parcels.
Larger parcels that once sat on the market are moving faster, especially when labeled “build-ready” or “homestead potential.” Builders are designing homes that fit land-rich lifestyles—think wraparound porches, mudrooms, and outbuildings.
For many, land represents more than just space—it’s a lifestyle. A garden, a sunrise, a little peace and quiet. And while not everyone who moves here will raise goats or build a greenhouse, having the room to do so matters.
As 2025 unfolds, Sandpoint’s real estate story isn’t just about bedrooms and bathrooms. It’s about how we use the land beneath our feet—and how a few more acres can offer a whole new way to live.
Summer tourism in Sandpoint brings more than sun and lake days—it drives real estate activity across the region. With visitors flocking to enjoy Lake Pend Oreille and outdoor recreation, short-term rentals see a sharp rise in demand, limiting availability and raising prices. Buyers looking for vacation homes often compete for listings, especially near the lake, downtown, and Schweitzer access points. This seasonal surge can drive property values higher and lead to quicker sales. For sellers, summer offers peak exposure. For buyers, timing and readiness are crucial. Understanding Sandpoint’s summer tourism cycle is key to navigating the market effectively.

July 4th winning parade float in 1954—
S andpoint has been throwing parades “as grand as any city twice its size” since at least 1906, according to the archives at the Bonner County Museum. Locals (townies and farmers) and out-of-towners lined the streets, munching popcorn, licking ice cream, and drinking soda, all while enjoying marching bands, clowns, festive floats, tractors, horses, logging on trucks, and the occasional celebrity in a convertible who may or may not have won something in 4-H.
In 1956, the parade stretched two miles—a Tour de Sandpoint— starting at Euclid, down Pine, up First and Cedar, and down Fifth to Church like a very patriotic snake. The day included
a fishing derby, baseball game, street dance, and—because it’s North Idaho—a water fight at Farmin School. Picnics and barbecues sprouted up throughout town.
Floats once vied for blue ribbons, including this bar-sponsored masterpiece celebrating Lake Pend Oreille’s famous Kamloops. I would have cast a first-place vote for this work of art. Nothing says America like beer and trout.
In short, it was the kind of day where your Sunday best got dusty, your kid sticky, and your heart a little fuller.
