The Cancer Cartel is a non-profit organization on a mission to provide financial support and relief for those fighting cancer. Founded in Enumclaw, Washington, by survivors Katy Tinney-Olson, Kerry Solmonsen, and Shelly Tinney-Miller, it has grown from a small grassroots idea into a nationwide movement. Since its inception, the organization has helped cover everyday living expenses—rent, utilities, transportation, and groceries—so patients can focus on healing instead of financial stress.
With a vision that no warrior should face cancer alone, The Cancer Cartel raises funds through luxury fashion resale, brand partnerships, and community events. Every donation directly impacts patients and families, helping remove the overwhelming financial burden of treatment. Guided by their passion and lived experience, the founders have built a trusted network of support that reaches across the country. As the air turns cooler, skin often responds with dryness, sensitivity, and dullness. This shift calls for more than just a heavier moisturizer—it’s time for a full skincare reset. Med spas are adapting with treatments like barrier-repair facials, enzyme exfoliation, and pigmentcorrecting options such as lactic acid peels and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy to repair sun damage from the previous season. Clients are also being guided to update their home routines: switching to creamier cleansers, layering hyaluronic acid and ceramides, and continuing sunscreen use despite cloudier skies. The goal now is to reinforce hydration, calm inflammation, and fortify the skin against upcoming stressors.
Subtlety is in. More people are seeking refined, preventative treatments that allow for expression while maintaining smoother skin. Enter Baby Botox and low-dose Xeomin—neuromodulators designed to soften early fine lines and prevent deeper wrinkles from forming. Providers are embracing a philosophy rooted in restraint, with careful placement and custom dosing based on facial dynamics. This approach often appeals to those looking for a refreshed, not frozen, appearance. Cooler months provide an ideal opportunity for these treatments, with less UV exposure and plenty of time to evaluate outcomes before the end of the year. It’s a new era of injectables—calculated, customizable, and confidence-boosting.
Standard facials have evolved into sophisticated skin treatments powered by innovative tools. Technologies like microneedling with RF (radiofrequency), ultrasound lifting, LED light therapy, and oxygen domes are now mainstays in modern med spas. These services target skin laxity, texture, and inflammation with minimal invasiveness and cumulative effects. As seasonal UV levels drop, it’s an excellent time for treatments that involve mild sensitivity postprocedure. Med spas are also combining devices in curated protocols tailored to skin type, lifestyle, and specific goals, often delivering visible improvements within a few sessions. For those seeking more than surface-level glow, modern devices offer layered, long-term results.
The concept of skin cycling—rotating active ingredients like retinoids, exfoliants, and hydrators—has gained popularity for balancing results with skin health. Now, it’s getting a high-tech upgrade. Providers are using AI-based apps and digital diagnostics to tailor cycling schedules based on each person’s real-time skin condition. By identifying inflammation, barrier damage, or product overload, these tools allow for smarter scheduling and better ingredient selection. The result? Fewer reactions, more glow, and routines that feel as customized as the treatments offered in the clinic. Skin Cycling 2.0 supports both home care education and long-term client satisfaction.
Exosomes—tiny cellular messengers packed with growth factors—are making waves as the next generation of regenerative skincare. Applied after microneedling or laser procedures, these vesicles accelerate recovery and significantly enhance collagen production. Unlike PRP (platelet-rich plasma), exosomes are lab-developed for consistency and contain concentrated signals that prompt the skin to regenerate. Early adopters report faster healing, improved elasticity, and a brighter complexion. As more med spas add this option to their menu, exosomes are quickly becoming a go-to for clients seeking deeper, more comprehensive results from their treatments.
Technology is transforming how med spas evaluate and treat skin. Devices that scan for hydration, elasticity, pore size, and sun damage allow providers to create highly personalized plans, down to product recommendations and treatment timing. This data-driven approach improves trust, encourages consistency, and helps track measurable progress over time. AI tools enhance consultations and ensure that no guesswork is involved, making each visit more effective and efficient. For clients, this means smarter skincare and stronger results.
This season isn’t about reinvention—it’s about refinement. As med spas adopt advanced tools and refined philosophies, clients are empowered to care for their skin in ways that are personalized, restorative, and long-lasting. From emerging technologies to minimalist approaches, there’s something for everyone at any stage of their skincare journey. The next step isn’t a trend, it’s a tailored strategy – and the best time to start is now.
Geniculate Artery Embolization (GAE) is an innovative procedure aimed at reducing knee pain associated with osteoarthritis. It involves blocking the geniculate arteries, which are responsible for supplying blood to the inflamed tissues around the knee joint. By interrupting the blood flow to these areas, GAE reduces inflammation, alleviates pain, and improves mobility without the need for surgery.

Founded by Sarita Valdes to support beauty, balance, and self-worth
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
hen Sarita Valdes stepped onto a pageant stage for the first time, she wasn’t chasing crowns; she was chasing courage.
“I never set out to become a beauty queen,” Sarita says.
“When I entered my first pageant, I was simply answering a deeper call—to challenge myself, to grow, and to use my voice in a bigger way.” That very first pageant was Miss Washington for America Strong, and to her complete surprise, she won.
Long before the crown, Sarita had already made a name for herself as a Master Esthetician and the founder of Herbology Skincare, a clean beauty skincare brand and spa in Washington focused on natural skincare for sensitive skin and organic skincare treatments. Rooted in ancient herbal wisdom and modern science, Herbology is more than a skincare brand; it’s a space for healing, empowerment, and reconnection.
“Empowering others—especially women—to feel strong, radiant, and confident in their own skin is at the core of everything I do,” she shares. That same vision guided her platform as Miss Washington and continues to fuel her mission at Herbology Skincare.
Founded in 2017 by Sarita, Herbology offers a range of plant-based beauty products and spa services that combine clinical-grade results with a deeply restorative experience. “Clients come to us not just to treat their skin, but to reconnect with themselves,” Sarita explains. “What makes the Herbology spa experience unique is how we create space for both transformation and stillness—where skincare becomes a healing ritual.”
Her best-known treatments include hydrating facials for dry skin and personalized skincare plans that honor each client’s unique needs. With an atmosphere curated to calm the senses, from the scent of herbs in the air to the warm, peaceful lighting, Herbology is a retreat from the noise of everyday life. “Confidence doesn’t just come from clear skin, it comes from being seen, supported, and celebrated.”
Herbology’s product line is a natural extension of Sarita’s philosophy— one that values integrity, nourishment, and long-term skin health. Each formula is thoughtfully crafted using fresh plant extracts, cold-pressed oils, and potent herbal infusions, working at a cellular level to support and protect the skin. Among the most popular offerings are the Rosewater
Facial Toning Mist, made from pure rose petals, and the Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which delivers deep, lasting hydration and leaves the skin plump, balanced, and radiant.
As Miss Washington for America Strong, Sarita’s platform strengthened her commitment to women’s empowerment. Her work now spans beyond skincare, focusing on helping women reclaim confidence in their lives. Through clean beauty advocacy, trauma support, and mentorship, her work fosters confidence, clarity, and self-worth in every woman she reaches.
This fall, she’s building on that mission with new offerings at Herbology. Seasonal facials featuring warm, botanical-rich blends will help clients nourish and protect their skin through the colder months. In addition, the spa will host pop-up events and one-on-one consultations, offering an immersive experience that reflects the heart of Herbology’s mission: holistic care, authentic connection, and intentional beauty.
“As my reign as Miss Washington comes to a close, I’m stepping into a new chapter with renewed purpose,” she says. Her goals include expanding Herbology into a fullspectrum wellness lifestyle brand and growing her presence as a speaker and mentor. For Sarita, Herbology is more than a business; it’s a reflection of her healing journey. “Every product, every treatment, every experience we offer is created with deep intention,” she says. “My goal is not just to give you glowing skin, but to create space for you to slow down, reconnect, and feel empowered in your own body.”

HOW A TEEN-LED NONPROFIT IS TRANSFORMING CLOSETS INTO CONFIDENCE
avani Bansal's nonprofit, Dream Dresses, connects underprivileged children in India with traditional Indian clothing that remains unused. A personal insight discovered in 2021 developed into a youthrun project covering 14 states across the United States. The group acquires second-hand Indian clothing from U.S. and U.K. households to provide disadvantaged Indian children with traditional festival outfits they couldn't otherwise afford.
Avani was inspired while cleaning her closet, discovering beautiful but unworn Indian dresses that had outgrown their use. “Goodwill has no use for this kind of ethnic clothing,” she explained. That’s when she got the idea of Dream Dresses. The mission is to repurpose these outfits, instilling confidence in kids while preserving cultural identity. Since its inception, Dream Dresses has donated over 10,000 traditional outfits, an achievement rooted in the dedication of donors, volunteers, and local communities.
For Avani, who grew up in Washington after moving from India as a child, visiting her home country shed light on the realities of poverty. This perspective, combined with Washington’s thriving Indian population, became the foundation for the nonprofit. Collaborating with a supportive network of volunteers and donors, Dream Dresses has grown through grassroots efforts and creative initiatives.
One of the organization’s significant challenges has been shipping costs. To address this, Dream Dresses launched its “Carry a Bag” initiative, encouraging travelers to India to check in a bag filled with donations. “It’s not a big time commitment, and the change we make feels very tangible when we see pictures of children receiving our donations,” shared Amuktha Nayudu, Washington State Lead.
Behind the scenes, Dream Dresses operates with a structure divided into teams, including marketing, social media,
Seeing all the kids’ happiness receiving the dresses reminded me of what all our efforts are going towards and made everything worth it.
fundraising, and human resources. Volunteers and interns are vital to its operations, gaining exposure to fields like finance and marketing while contributing to a meaningful cause. “Each team member plays a specific role,” Avani noted. “This has helped streamline what we do and allows us to grow.”
The impact of Dream Dresses is best reflected in heartfelt moments shared by the team. Avani recalls a six-year-old girl, Ishita, who cried joy upon receiving her outfit, saying, “Seeing all the kids’ happiness receiving the dresses reminded me of what all our efforts in Dream Dresses are going towards and made everything worth it.” Similarly, New York State Lead Maria Samuel shared, “I remember the first time I received a donation of dresses at the NY collection center. It was a donation of 60 beautiful outfits collected at an annual clothes drive conducted by a high school student. It was wonderful to see how different areas of our community could connect to serve this cause together!” Both stories highlight Dream Dresses' impact on children and the communities that come together to support them.
Dream Dresses also values its partnerships, particularly in Washington. Collaborations with organizations like the Vedic Cultural Center and ExpressionArts have helped raise awareness, recruit volunteers, and fundraise.
Looking ahead, Dream Dresses aims to expand internationally, supporting refugees from countries like Iran, Iraq, and Sudan through partner organizations. Avani envisions a growing team of volunteers of all ages joining the mission.
Businesses and individuals can donate clothing, volunteer, or contribute funds through their GoFundMe.com/f/givingneedy-kids-their-dream-dresses page to support Dream Dresses. When you think of the South Sound, you think of salt air, mountain views, small-town pride, and a community that shows up for each other. That same spirit is what Rachel Hayes brings as she steps into her new role as Marketing Executive for Gig Harbor Living Local and 253 Lifestyle Magazine. Born and raised in Gig Harbor, Rachel doesn’t just know the area—she lives the Pacific Northwest lifestyle threading through every South Sound community. She’s shopped local boutiques, cheered at waterfront festivals, snowboarded at Crystal Mountain, and stood on fishing vessels during the Blessing of the Fleet. Her deep roots and broad connections make her uniquely
positioned to help businesses across the 253 (and beyond) tell their stories in ways that resonate.
Rachel’s roots run deep, but her vision reaches far. With over a decade of experience in real estate and community marketing, she blends authenticity with strategy. Her passion? Helping local businesses not only survive, but thrive. “Being born and raised in Gig Harbor means I don’t just know this community—I’m part of it,” Rachel shares. “When I approach marketing here, it isn’t about a generic campaign. It’s about telling the stories that matter to us, because they’re my stories too.”
That heart is fueling Like Media’s next chapter. Rachel is teaming
up with longtime powerhouse Rebecca Baczewski, creating a dynamic partnership that balances Rachel’s homegrown insight with Rebecca’s deep magazine expertise. Together, they’re shaping a team that will drive Like Media’s growth across Pierce County, Kitsap, and beyond.
Rachel also brings a sharp digital perspective. She sees SEO, social media, and online engagement as gamechangers for small businesses. She plans to merge the timeless impact of print with the reach of digital, making Gig Harbor Living Local and 253 Lifestyle must-reads in both print and digital. Think interactive features, QR codes linking to local spotlights, and campaigns that bridge the gap between coffee-table keepsake and digital community hubs.
Looking ahead, Rachel is helping Like Media set its sights on 2026 with a vision rooted in connection. Instead of chasing clicks or impressions, the focus is on building bridges—between businesses and neighbors, between timeless print and digital, and between the traditions that define Washington towns and the new voices shaping their future. The goal is clear: to deepen the magazines’ role as a trusted hub where businesses shine, stories are preserved, and the community sees itself reflected with authenticity. That’s why she’s committed to keeping Like Media authentic, ensuring every page, feature, and story reflects the people and traditions that make the South Sound unique.
Lightning Round with Rachel
Go-to coffee order:
“Williams Patrick’s drive-thru — they know me before I get to the window! A 24-oz iced Americano with 4 Stevia and heavy cream.”
Weekend happy place:
“In summer, I garden, float in the pool, host friends, or play pickleball, with breakfast at Netshed or Devoted Kiss and date nights at Brix or Morso. In winter, I snowboard at Crystal Mountain or cozy up with my boyfriend, our dog, a movie, and the fireplace.”
Hype song before a big meeting:
“Depends on my mood—I love all music. I grew up singing in church with my dad, who was (fun fact) Waylon Jennings’ bass player. Music is in my blood, so whether upbeat or soulful, I’m usually singing my way into the right headspace.”
Rachel is helping Like Media set its sights on 2026 with a vision rooted in connection.
Why Puget Sound’s farmers’ markets are more than just a place to shop
EXPERT IN courtesy of JULIA RUNYAN, MANAGING BROKER/OWNER, THE RUNYAN GROUP - RE/MAX EXCLUSIVE
There’s something timeless about a morning at the farmers’ market. The smell of fresh coffee and just-picked basil in the air, fiddle music drifting across the park, kids dancing barefoot, and neighbors reconnecting over vibrant blooms. For me, these moments are more than weekend errands— they’re a reflection of what makes the Puget Sound region feel like home.
As someone descended from one of Gig Harbor’s original fishing families, I feel deeply connected to this coastal community. My earliest memories are full of salt air, smoked salmon, and Saturdays spent walking among rows of produce. Farmers’ markets bring those memories to life. They celebrate seasonality, tradition, and the powerful bonds that tie us together.
Markets like Gig Harbor’s waterfront gathering at Skansie Brothers Park or Olympia’s vibrant yearround staple are more than venues; they’re living expressions of community. They’re where you meet the person who grew your greens or kneaded your bread, where local musicians add rhythm to your routine, and where every booth tells a story. Establish a Command Center: Designate a space near the kitchen or entryway for backpacks, lunchboxes, permission slips, and calendars. Use wall hooks, trays, and labeled folders to keep everything organized and in one spot.
Streamline morning prep by preparing lunches, packing bags, and laying out outfits the night before. Keeping a weekly meal planner or a shared family calendar can also help reduce lastminute stress before the bus arrives.
Create a Homework-Friendly Zone: Set up a quiet, clutter-free workspace stocked with essentials like pencils, chargers, and paper. Even a small nook can become a productive spot with the right lighting and structure.
A few simple systems can transform back-to-school chaos into a smooth, steady rhythm that lasts throughout the entire season.

Stephanie Brooks, Owner of GNOSH Food Truck
Iby PAIGE SCHULTE Realtor + Community
n a bright blue food truck parked in Key Center, Stephanie Brooks is serving more than sandwiches—she’s dishing out community, connection, and compassion.
Stephanie, a lifelong Key Peninsula resident, spent 25 years in retail management before returning to her roots and opening GNOSH in July 2015. From the start, her mission was clear: use food as a vehicle to build relationships and uplift the community she loves.
What sets GNOSH apart isn’t just the bold flavors—it’s the heart behind the business. Stephanie knows her customers by name, remembers their stories, and treats every order like a conversation with an old friend. It’s hospitality in its purest form.
But her impact stretches far beyond the food truck window.
Stephanie sits on the board of Food Backpacks 4 Kids, a nonprofit fighting hunger for children across the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor. Through this role and her personal giving, she’s made feeding families a core part of her business philosophy. GNOSH has supported organizations like the Red Barn Youth Center, and Stephanie regularly partners with local nonprofits, fundraisers, and fellow small business owners to give back however she can.
STOLZ & ASSOCIATES, P.S.
Legal matters don’t have to be overwhelming. Stolz & Associates, P.S. offers trusted legal guidance with a personal touch. Whether you’re navigating estate planning, probate, real estate, or business law, their experienced attorneys are here to help you make confident decisions. With a long-standing reputation in the South Sound, they provide practical solutions tailored to your needs—because peace of mind starts with a solid legal foundation.
Her “give where you live” mentality is woven into every layer of GNOSH— from offering discounts to firefighters, police officers, and veterans, to showing up at community events and fundraisers. She doesn’t just talk about service—she shows up, gives back, and leads by example.
And of course, there’s the food: inventive samm’iches, wraps, salads, and loaded fries that locals can’t get enough of. Favorites include the Figgy Piggy and the Reuben with homemade hot sweet pickles. Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and keto options ensure everyone’s welcome at her window.
Stephanie Brooks proves what happens when a small business leads with love, purpose, and pride of place. In every bite and every act of generosity, she reminds us all why giving where you live matters.

Wedding days stretch from soft morning light to golden hour to after-dark flash. Your look should shift with it. Avoid SPF with flashback. Choose makeup that performs well under both warm and cool lighting conditions. Ask your photographer when your portraits will be taken, and prepare for that light. Weather sets the mood, but lighting defines the memory.
You’ve prepped for months. But what happens the day after?
1. Puffy eyes + pillow creases
You’ll be tired. Store a gel eye mask in the fridge and apply with a cup of coffee in hand.
2. Dry lips + dehydration Champagne is great. Water is better. Add electrolytes to bounce back fast.
3. Breakouts from stress relief
You made it. Your body will react. Use a calming mask, not a harsh scrub.
The wedding is one day. Your skin still needs love after it’s over.
