ELLIE’S

veryone wants the right light in their home and everyone can with this easy to follow guide for getting the right light levels

How2:

WHEN LIGHTING YOUR ROOM . .

SIZE IS EVERYTHING. . . . . . . Consider the size of the room before doing anything. This may sound silly, but lots of people just don’t. Perhaps because we all remember the days when you just had a light bulb hanging in the middle of the room and that was that. Some say a bare hanging bulb seemed to do the job. The bulb was probably a much brighter bulb than we have today. It may have been as much as a 150 watt bulb (now banned). Did it really do the job anyway? We expect a little more from our lighting these days. The light fitting has become part of the decoration in the room and is not there just there to give light. Having said that, it is part of a light fitting’s job description to provide light - so what job do you want it to provide for you.? How much light is need in the room? Here is a little formula to give you a good starting point. Measure the length and times this by the width of your room which will give you the square meterage of the space you wish to light. For each meter of floor space you should have approx. 250 ***lumens of light. Which is about 25 watts in old money. For example a room 4 meters by 3 meters will be 12 square meters. 12 x 25 = 300 watts It really doesn’t matter if you have lots of windows in the room, when working out what light is needed, in the evenings when you plan to use your lights windows are often covered by window dressings.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT LUMENS

PAGE

16

ELLIE’S

How2:

WHAT ARE ‘LUMENS’ ? Let me shed a little light on the subject, it really is worth knowing a bit about lumens before buying replacement light bulbs. • All light bulbs are now measured in ‘lumens’ • Lumens equals LIGHT • Wattage is simple the power the bulb uses. There has been big changes in how efficient light bulbs are and manufacturers are still working to get the most light with the lowest energy consumption. The most efficient mainstream source of light is Light Emitting Diodes commonly known as LED. Not all LED’s produce the same light level as each other so you can’t compare one make with another easily. The powers that be knew this was confusing so they looked at a fair way of giving us all a better idea of what light you get from the power being used. As a rule of thumb an old style 50 watt spotlight bulb would have been 50 watts to power giving roughly a light level that then equated to 300-350 lumens. Now a 4.4 watt LED bulb can give you 400 lumens, depending on the maker of the bulb. What exactly is LED? As I’ve mentioned they are light emitting diodes, these diodes only need a small amount of electricity to excite the diodes making them glow, and you have probably guessed, they emit light. In the early days the LED were little blobs of very low power only really used as a decorative light. Now they are little chips and much better and brighter than before.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT LED BULBS

PAGE

17

ELLIE’S

How2:

LED is much cheaper to run, has a longer expected life and is cool to the touch, this is all good! The bit that may shock you is the price they are expensive to buy. Why I hear you say a light bulb is a light bulb! Well, not quite! The bulbs do last much longer so you don’t have to buy as many replacement bulbs and the cost of running them will be significantly reduced. With these savings you start to see it’s not so expensive, as you can typically re-coop the cost of buying the bulb within a couple of years. How long do the bulbs last? This too can vary anything between 15,000 hours and 50,000 hours. That can be as much as 15 years. You’d probably be forgiven for thinking, ‘ah yes but, what if it doesn’t last that long?’ We all thought the same, light bulbs no matter how expensive can fail. LED’s as a rule are given a 12 month warranty which doesn’t seem a lot, but manufactures state that LED failures if they are going to happen, will happen very early in their life. As an industry we’ve asked that this warranty be extended. We felt as LED is new many customers and potential customers would prefer some assurance that the bulbs will last. After a little pressure some manufacturers do offer extended warranty, but not all. Best warranties are around 3-5 years. Which we feel is a step in the right direction and does at least represent a good return on the investment buyers make when buying LED. LED really is the sensible option as long as you buy lights based on the energy consumption and light level it gives. Although LED seems to be new technology, it’s not all that new. LED’s were first invented in 1962 so a lot older than we may imagine. There’s a lot to know about LED’s some are replacement bulbs you can retro fit. Whilst others are actually integrated into the fittings. If you are looking to buy brand new light fittings you’ll have many choices to make, do you buy integrated LED or a light that can retro fit LED’s Next to each product we sell online you’ll see energy information to help you select the most suitable light for you. If you need any further help before buying a light from us you can email us.

ith the re-launch of the Mad Max movies in the cinema, ‘SteamPunk’ is an emerging trend that’s sure to get you hooked. You may not of heard the phrase “SteamPunk’ before but you’re sure to recognise the signature styles from movies and high class trendies. Bioshock gamers will know but the vast majority of us may think Harry Potter especially the ‘time turner’ from Prisoner of Azkaban. Even if, this has passed you by a little, you’re sure to have noticed no doubt, the emergence of quality materials being used. Often good examples can be found in todays commercial interiors and eateries where you’ll see a mix of solid brass, mid tone wood, copper and glass. Quality matters with this look.

WHY

BE SAFE Needless to say when it

comes to installing electrical appliances including light fittings in bathroom great care must be taken, this is not a job for a DIY enthusiast, even very skilled electricians are not allow to fit a light in the bathroom unless they have the required extra qualifications.

are bathroom lights different? To help protect us all, strict safety requirements have been put in place. The law for manufacture and installation of bathroom lights is heavily regulated. Initially when you consider changing your bathroom lights the new regulations can sound complicated, worry not it’s not as complex as you first think.

Often people leave the choosing of lights to the electrician and end up with something a bit dull. There’s no need with a little knowledge you can choose bathroom safe lights with confidence.

The basics are: Lights that are close to water must be completely enclosed to stop steam and water getting into the electrics. Makes sense! Water and electric are a dangerous combination.

IF m o o r h t a B Your e b t o n d lights nee r o t n e c s e r o ugly flu . s t h g i l t o boring sp e m o s e s u . ..... sk a r o n o i t imagina w e n e m o s us for ideas !!!

you have a huge bathroom the lights may not be anywhere near water and you may not need to fit bathroom safe lights. However, having said that, the bathroom is normally the smallest room in the house. Bathrooms can have a bath, a shower, basin and loo all using water. Close to these water sources you’ll need special bathroom rated lights. Let me explain when you need extra protection and a bathroom light must be used. Look at the drawing firstly the wash hand basin where the arch shape is where extra protection is needed this area is where water may be splashed. If you wish to have a light in that area it must be suitable for zone 2 (IP44). All bathroom lights have a number to show you how much protection the light has, or how sealed it is. This is the number manufacturers must reach to say there lights are bathroom safe. Next the area is directly next to the bath, on the floor measure 60cm away from the edge all the way around the bath, now if the line became a force field around that bath from floor to ceiling, a safe area if you like, use the friendly bathroom rated lights in this area. All unsafe non bathroom lights must stay out of your safe area. This includes the shower cubical. 60cm from the edge of your shower cubical and right up to the ceiling.

is a rating for bathroom safe lights. If the lights are being fitted very close to water in the bath or shower cubical its-self, then you’ll need a higher rating than this. If you want lights in the bath tub or shower cubical these will be a higher rating of IP67 and additionally to this, they will need to be a 12 Volt lights too! 12 volt lights are the types of lights you need if you are submerging lights or there a risk of light being submerged. These types of lights may need special consideration as they have transformers that step down the voltage from 230 volts to 12 volts. The transformer will need to be house somewhere so some additional planning is required. Talk to your electrician about this prior to buying any lights for zone 0.

We’ve discovered that some people have gone for gold and it really works. Join the gold Rush add some gold objects lamps and lighting. It really does lift the look of a room. I’ve often wished life could be that simple! The Lighting Company can help they’ve a Bespoke service allowing customisation of selected lights. There is a small additional charge for colour customisation which includes the paint of your choice. This varies depending on the brand of paint you select as some are more costly than others. As you know there’s many colours to choose from. I adore paints such as the beautiful Marston & Langinger paints pictured here. If you fancy ‘mole brown’ ‘lavender’ ‘lulu’ or ‘french lime’ the choice is yours. I’m a little fond of ‘saxe blue’ at the moment.
