Temple Beth El’s Annual Appeal is the moment when we each offer what we can — where our many hands can perform the heavy lift of seemingly insurmountable obstacles that so many of our members face each and every day.
Torah teaches us that tzedakah is an act of righteousness and compassion — more than just the giving of money, but a sacred responsibility to support others in need and make a positive impact on their lives.
Annual giving at Temple Beth El is a beautiful form of direct support. It’s never “charity from strangers,” but rather “love from neighbors.”
Through your meaningful support of this campaign, you are placing a hand on a vulnerable member’s shoulder and saying,
You’re not alone. You matter to us because YOU ARE US. We won’t let you fall.
MANY HANDS
This year, it will take many hands for us to reach our Annual Appeal goal of $500,000 — a milestone that will allow us to provide for more than 500 member households who we know will need our support.
Temple Beth El’s Annual Appeal goes beyond addressing challenges.
Through our many hands, it doesn’t just solve problems... it heals.
The following stories are true, but the names of the individuals have been changed to maintain confidentiality.
MANY HANDS
The Kaplans
The Kaplans are a young family, full of ordinary joy — Saturday pancakes, sticky handprints, nightly bedtime stories. Jason was 43, in commercial finance. His wife, Melissa, worked part-time from home with their two children: Noah, 8, who wanted to be an astronaut, and Lilly, 4, who believed tutus were everyday attire.
One January morning, everything changed. A sudden cardiac attack. No warning. Jason was gone.
The shock was suffocating and the grief was unrelenting. Noah and Lilly, who would usually ask a million questions a day were now only asking one: “When is Daddy coming home?”
Bills began piling up. Jason had been the provider — his job, their health insurance, their sense of stability. Suddenly, Melissa was navigating a world of paperwork and debt and impossible choices: rent or groceries? Grief counseling or school supplies?
There were moments she thought they might not make it. That the weight would pull them under.
But then — help came. Temple Beth El coordinated a grief support group for the kids and Melissa found comfort in the temple’s bereavement group. Grocery cards helped keep food on the table and religious school and the Beth El Early Learning Center’s summer camp helped keep the kids’ plates full. Assistance with rent created more breathing room and a scholarship ensured that the Kaplans would never lose Temple Beth El as their spiritual safe-haven.
And slowly, some of the light returned.

Support from Temple Beth El’s Annual Appeal made the difference the Kaplans needed — it allowed them to move forward.
Barbara & Gerry
Barbara & Gerry have been married for 55 years and celebrated their 50th anniversary at Temple Beth El.
Their world, once filled with the chatter of neighbors and canasta parties, had grown small and mostly silent. They never had children and their friends had drifted away or passed on.
Gerry had always been the strong one — a retired social worker who could once navigate any delicate matter. But dementia creates more bad days than good. Gerry can no longer attend a worship service in person. He has been in and out of the ER: infections, falls, confusion. Barbara sits in the hospital chair next to his bed, holding his hand.
Barbara, frail herself, and living on their fixed income, has become his full-time caregiver.
She barely eats. Most days, she sits at the kitchen table, sorting his pills and waiting for the phone to ring, hoping it won’t be a bill collector.
They were never the type to ask for help, and fortunately, they never truly had to.
Members of Temple Beth El’s clergy team communicate daily with Barbara. They sit bedside during hospital visits, and provide financial assistance to keep the lights on and assist with medication. Transportation is arranged so Barbara can participate in Beth El Circles, offering much-needed caregiver respite.
One thing Barbara and Gerry never have to worry about is their synagogue. Temple Beth El helps them access Virtual Beth El so they can feel connected to their community even when they cannot attend in person. They will always remain members and Temple Beth El will be there for them in a moment’s notice. Temple Beth El is the only family they have.
Support from Temple Beth El’s Annual Appeal is the only thing Barbara & Gerry can rely on to help them navigate difficult times when they feel alone.
