Little Boxes

Beyond the Labels: Embracing the Fluidity of Generations

On paper, I’m a baby boomer. But, I identify as Gen X. And honestly? Most people I know feel the same way — not about Gen X specifically, but about not fitting neatly into the tidy little boxes society loves to assign us. Generations may be defined by birth years, but identity isn’t so obedient.

Part of the problem is history itself. Big events shape people differently depending on when they happen to collide with your life. Someone ten years older than I am may have been drafted during the Vietnam War. For me, the war barely registered. While my parents watched the news with Walter Cronkite, his voice was more background noise to me. I was more likely to pay attention to the commercials for Tang and or Atari that aired on TV. Although we may both be considered “boomers” on paper, our experiences are vastly different.

That’s the absurdity of these labels: a war veteran and a child still trading Wacky Packs supposedly belong to the same club.

Pop culture is no tidier. Supposedly, boomers related to shows like Leave It to Beaver. I barely remember it. What shaped me wasn’t black-and-white morality tales but the messy, sarcastic world of John Hughes movies. Sure, I watched The Waltons as a kid, but the moment that felt like my reality was

especially people are complex and that sometimes, authority figures are just as clueless as the rest of us.

And then there’s work. The boomer stereotype is the company man, climbing the same ladder for forty years until someone hands him a gold watch. That could have been me — I started at American Express, and the ladders were waiting. But instead of decades at one desk, I veered toward independence, toward entrepreneurship.

Even technology hasn’t played out as expected. Boomers purportedly struggle to send an email. I was the one teaching myself design software long before my kids were born. Today I’m tinkering with relational databases in Notion while my Gen Z offspring roll their eyes at me. Imagine that: I’m the early adopter in the family, and they’re the ones acting jaded. Please — no “OK Boomer.”

But again, this isn’t just about me. Almost everyone I know has a story about not fitting the mold they were handed. The boxes are too small. They erase nuance and pretend millions of people are interchangeable. Worse, they make us into punchlines: boomers are hoarders of fine china, Gen X is cynical and disaffected, millennials are the disciples of avocadotoast, Gen Z can’t function without TikTok. By that logic, I should be polishing my Buick, jamming out to casette tapes and finding my way around with a paper map. Spoiler: none of that is happening.

So yes, technically I’m a boomer. But if you ask me, I’ll say I am Gen X in spirit. The reality is almost nobody fits perfectly into a box. But I am hoping I still fit into my old jeans. Y

The Boys of Summer

Attention #1! If you’re reading this and you don’t instantly get an earworm, then you have no musical taste.

Attention #2! I could swear I’ve written a column about this exact subject before, but a search of the Richards Archives turned up no results. So if I have, well, my apologies, and hopefully your memory is as bad as mine. And if I haven’t, here you go!

Anyway. I’m a huuuuge baseball fan (as you probably already know). And as we head into October, baseball is headed toward its annual Grand Finale, otherwise known as the World Series. This year’s series is slated to begin on October 24, and end on (gasp) November 1.

November. Note that it will extend into November only if necessary, meaning only if the full seven-game series is needed. If you know what this means, great! If not, you’re not a baseball fan and you might as well stop reading right now. Also, you’re a heathen.

I’m sure you can’t wait to hear why I’m (a) a Don Henley fan (please tell me you get the reference) and (b) why I’m such a huuuuge baseball fan.

As an only child, I’m pretty sure that my parents were determined to have what each of them wanted, i.e. my mother probably wanted a girl and my father probably wanted a boy. Ergo, my mother raised a girl and my father raised a boy.

Allow me to explain: My mother was in charge of ballet lessons, piano lessons, and Brownies (which lasted precisely two meetings, but that’s a story for another day). My father was in charge of… sports.

“Sports” covered a wide range. From baseball to stickball to hockey to football to golf (ugh), my father was determined to make me into not just a sports fan, but a player. Well, not a football player.

But baseball, stickball, and hockey? Yes, sir!

Of all these sports, baseball was his game. We lived about 10 minutes from Shea Stadium (yes, I will always call it that) and every chance he got, we went to a game. I don’t know if he was a Mets fan due to proximity or due to an undying hatred of the Yankees. Either way, I grew up a Mets fan.

This has caused me to have some divided loyalties as a longtime Floridian. I’m now primarily a Marlins fan but will grudgingly support the Mets unless they’re playing the Marlins.

As usual, I’ve digressed.

October – and the Boys of Summer – remain fixed in my mind as the best time of year, not just because I love fall (and promise not to rant again about how Florida Octobers are a cruel trick), but because I love baseball. Ahh, the crack of the bat, the crispness in the air (wait, what?), and that Don Henley song.

So if you’re not a baseball fan, shame on you. And if you’re not a fan of Don Henley’s The Boys of Summer, I have no words. For once. Y

Planning for Longevity

Helping Your Wealth Last for Generations

Longevity changes the core question of wealth management. It is not only about reaching financial independence. It is about sustaining your lifestyle for decades and preparing a thoughtful transfer to the next generation. Our approach coordinates cash flow, investment discipline, taxes, estate design, and family readiness so your plan remains durable as life unfolds.

Understanding the Phases of Retirement

A successful plan begins with a clear view of spending across three phases of retirement. The early active years often see higher travel and lifestyle costs. Mid-retirement tends to normalize, while late retirement may bring greater healthcare and caregiving needs. For 2025, the standard Medicare Part B premium is $185 per month, and the annual Part B deductible is $257. Higher-income households may owe surcharges, so planning around income timing can help preserve after-tax cash flow.

preserve purchasing power over decades by offsetting inflation. Tax-aware asset allocation and discipline rebalancing keep your risk profile aligned with your goals and allow your portfolio to support both current withdrawals and long-term growth.

Designing a Portfolio for the Long Run

Portfolio construction should align with your time horizons. We recommend reserving near-term spending needs in high-quality cash and bonds to reduce sequence-of-returns risk. At the same time, maintaining a meaningful allocation to equities helps

Tax and Estate Planning for Longevity and Legacy

Starting January 1, 2026, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act makes this higher exemption permanent, with the new threshold raised to $15 million per individual ($30 million for married couples), adjusted for inflation annually thereafter

Advanced Strategies to Protect and Transfer Wealth

Depending on your goals, we may consider spousal lifetime access trusts, irrevocable life insurance trusts to remove policy proceeds from the taxable estate, or multi-generational trusts with responsible distribution standards. Love Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

Every October, neighborhoods fill with ghosts, vampires, witches, and monsters. But here’s the thing… some of these spooky creatures have a habit of sneaking right into our marriages. And no, I’m not talking about the kids after too much Halloween candy. What I mean are the “costumes” we wear in our relationships without even realizing it. “Masks” is the clinical term, but I wanted to be a little playful with you, thinking it might make you smile and perhaps even help you recognize some common behaviors in yourself. What costume have you been wearing?

Some of us turn into ghosts… vanishing when things get tense, avoiding hard conversations, perhaps even giving our spouses the dreaded silent treatment instead of speaking our truth. Others morph into zombies… maybe you know this feeling? You are just going through the motions, feeling emotionally numb, doing life together, but forgetting to look each other in the eyes. And then there are the vampires… who are busy sucking the energy right out of their partners with constant criticism, only focusing on negativity, or adopting the unspoken demand to “make me happy.”

From Ghost to Grounded Partner

If you tend to disappear during conflict, try staying present even when it’s uncomfortable. Instead of floating away, say, “This is hard for me, but I want to talk about it because I care about us.” That one sentence can be more romantic than most romantic gestures.

The scariest thing isn’t the haunted house at the end of the block… it’s when your marriage starts feeling scary. And it’s easier than we think to slip into those roles. Maybe life has been busy and stressful? Have you been holding onto old resentments? Perhaps your narrative is “This is just what marriage is like after a while.” But here’s the plot twist: you don’t have to live in a horror story. Nope. Not you or your spouse. As a marriage coach, I see it all the time… couples who believe the spark is gone, but really, they’ve just been wearing the wrong “costumes” for too long. Here’s the truth: love doesn’t just float in like a friendly ghost who sets up permanent residence! Love is not a spirit, it’s a choice. And the couples who thrive are the ones who keep making that choice, even on the days they’d rather hide under the covers. The good news is you can always change your costume. Here’s how:

From Zombie to Engaged Lover

If you’ve been running on autopilot, pause and intentionally connect. Sit on the couch without your phones. Ask each other questions. Look up from the daily grind and notice your partner — really notice them.

From Vampire to Uplifter

If you’ve been focusing on what’s wrong, find one thing to appreciate today. Out loud. Even if it’s small: “Thanks for making me coffee this morning.” Appreciation is like garlic to the vampire of negativity… it keeps the resentment away.

Now, let’s be real. Relationships will always have moments of “scary.” You’ll have disagreements. You’ll face stress. You’ll even go through seasons where you feel disconnected. That’s normal. But if you keep choosing love, you can survive anything… yes, even the most frightening times. So, this Halloween, while the kids are out trick-or-treating, think about what “costume” you’ve been wearing in your marriage. Are you a ghost? A zombie? A vampire? Or maybe a combination? (A hybrid is truly terrifying, by the way.)

The good news? Costumes are optional in marriage… you can swap out the one you’ve been wearing for something warmer, brighter, and far less likely to scare your spouse away. Be the partner who brings warmth, humor, and light into your relationship. Be the one who knocks on the door of your spouse’s heart, not just to get candy, but to give them something sweeter: your presence, your attention, your love. Because the most powerful magic in any marriage isn’t a love potion — it’s two people deciding to fall in love with each other, over and over again. Y

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Rising Strong

For the past 22 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching martial arts in our community. One of the greatest joys of being an instructor isn’t just teaching kicks and punches — it’s helping people transform their mindset, confidence, and lives. Over the years, I’ve learned that true growth — whether on the mat, in business, or in our personal lives — comes from the ability to reinvent ourselves.

Life Lessons from The Phoenix Transformation

Brian Tracy’s book The Phoenix Transformation captures this idea beautifully. Like the mythical phoenix, each of us has the ability to rise from challenges and create a life filled with purpose and achievement. I’d like to share five lessons from the book.

1. Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life

Transformation begins when you accept total responsibility. Blaming others or waiting for luck to change will keep you stuck. Instead, ask yourself: What can I do differently? I remind my students no one else can throw their punches, run their miles, or earn their black belt. Once you own your results, you take back your power.

2. Clarity Is Power

One key message is the importance of clarity. You can’t hit a target you can’t see. The more precise you are about your goals, the faster you can move toward them. Writing down your top ten goals daily and aligning your actions with them helps sharpen focus and drive energy, much like an athlete training for a specific event.

3. Upgrade Your Beliefs and Attitudes

Our beliefs can either propel us forward or hold us back. Limiting beliefs, like thinking you’re “not good with money,” create barriers. However, we can reprogram our beliefs from “I can’t” to “I will learn,” which can lead to growth and confidence.

4. Discipline Is Freedom

This might sound backward at first, but discipline actually creates freedom. When you discipline yourself to control your time, health, finances, or daily habits, you free yourself from stress and chaos.

Tracy argues that self-discipline is the foundation of all success. In the dojo, discipline means showing up for class, practicing when it’s not convenient, and sticking to the basics. In life, it means choosing long-term rewards over short-term comfort.

5. Continuous Learning and Growth

Finally, The Phoenix Transformation highlights the power of lifelong learning. KAIZEN is a martial arts term that means constant and never-ending improvement. Every book you read, seminar you attend, or skill you acquire increases your value and ability to adapt. In a world that’s constantly changing, standing still means falling behind. I tell my students: black belt is not the end; it’s just the beginning. It means you are now a serious student and the real learning begins. The same is true in life—the more you grow, the more opportunities appear.

Life is full of challenges — some expected, some out of nowhere. But like the phoenix, we always have the ability to rise again, stronger and wiser. Brian Tracy’s message is simple but powerful: accept responsibility, get clear, upgrade your beliefs, practice discipline, and never stop learning. If you apply even a few of these principles, you’ll see changes not just in your career or relationships, but in the way you feel about yourself and your future. And that’s the true essence of transformation. Y

CREATIVELY COOKING

Pumpkin Spice Focaccia

For anyone wary of bread-making, focaccia is a safe place to start. It’s made in one bowl, entirely by hand — no stand mixer required. And when I say “by hand,” I mean literally. Focaccia dough is forgiving, not temperamental, so you can feel confident you’ll end up with something pillowy yet crisp. Since I’ve pretty much renamed fall “pumpkin spice season,” I decided to embrace the concept and adapt one of my favorite recipes to fit the moment. The result is a true treat. If you’d like to serve this focaccia in the morning, make the dough the night before. After completing the stretch-and-folds, cover it with plastic wrap and let it rise overnight in the refrigerator. The next day, pick up where you left off.

INGREDIENTS

For the Dough

350 grams lukewarm water (1 1/2 cups)

1 1/2 teaspoons yeast

1 1/2 teaspoons honey

200 grams pumpkin purée (about 3/4 cup)

500 grams bread flour (3 3/4 cups plus 1 tablespoon)

2 teaspoons pumpkin spice (see note)

10 grams kosher salt

1/4 cup avocado oil (or another neutral oil)

2 tablespoons ghee, melted (optional, see instructions)

PREPARATION

In a large bowl, stir together the lukewarm water, honey, and yeast. Let sit for about 10 minutes, until the surface looks foamy. Mix in the pumpkin purée, then add the flour, pumpkin spice, and salt. Stir until no dry spots remain, then switch to your hands when it gets too heavy. Do a few rounds of “stretch and folds” to help bring the dough together and develop the gluten. To do this: reach to the bottom of the dough, pull a section up, and fold it over the top. Rotate the bowl a quarter turn and repeat until you’ve gone all the way around. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let rest for 10 minutes. (Who knew it was tired?)

Wet your hands and repeat the stretch-and-fold process, then let it rest for another 10 minutes. Do one final round of stretch and folds. Scrape down the bowl, drizzle in 2 tablespoons of avocado oil (or another neutral

For the Filling/Topping

5 tablespoons unsalted butter

100 grams dark brown sugar

2 teaspoons pumpkin spice

Pinch of kosher salt

For the Glaze

90 grams (3/4 cup) powdered sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon cream or milk

3 tablespoons maple syrup

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

oil), and turn the dough so it’s all coated. Olive oil also works if you prefer its flavor. Cover and let the dough rise until it has doubled in size, about 1–2 hours.

While the dough rises, prepare the filling. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar, pumpkin spice, and a pinch of salt. Cook just until the sugar melts, then remove from the heat and set aside. You can also make the glaze now by whisking together the powdered sugar, cinnamon, cream or milk, maple syrup, and vanilla until smooth. Preheat the oven to 425°F and position racks on both the top and bottom levels.

Grease a 9-by-13-inch metal pan with 2 tablespoons avocado oil, or use melted ghee for a richer flavor. Transfer the dough to the pan and stretch it out as best you can. Spread half the cooled filling evenly over the surface, then fold the dough in

thirds like a letter. Flip it over so the smooth side is on top, rotate 90 degrees, and stretch it back out to fill the pan. If it resists, cover and let rest for 10 minutes before trying again. Once stretched, let rise again for 30–60 minutes, until bubbly and jiggly when shaken.

Rub a little oil on your hands and dimple the dough all over with your fingertips. Spread the remaining filling across the top and lightly mist with water — this helps it crisp in the oven. Bake on the bottom rack for about 20 minutes until golden, then move to the top rack for another 3–5 minutes, until golden. Remove from the oven, drizzle with the glaze, and serve warm.

Note: To make your own pumpkin spice, combine 2 teaspoons ground ginger, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon cloves, 1 teaspoon allspice, and 1/2 teaspoon cardamom. Y

has a way of reflecting both the world around us and the world within us. In Pompano Beach, that vision comes alive through the city’s Artists in Residence program at Bailey Contemporary Arts Center, where a new class of talented creators is shaping conversations, exploring traditions, and building connections through their work. From painters who harvest pigments from plants, to muralists who scorch fabric with fire, to photographers who turn self-portraiture into a meditation on mental health, each artist brings a unique perspective rooted in both personal journey and shared community. Together, they represent the power of art not only to inspire, but also to heal, transform, and remind us of our common humanity.

Christina earned her BFA in fine art with a minor in art history from Florida State University, and she has been refining her craft ever since. She aims to revive historical painting techniques and ancient methods of collecting art materials. Through her art and teaching, Christina encourages others to slow down, look closely, and reconnect with the natural world. LIV COOK

Liv Cook is a South Florida-based portrait artist originally from Pittsburgh, PA. With a background in classical ballet, she developed an early appreciation for the body’s expressive power. In 2022, after studying makeup and esthetics, her focus shifted to portraiture, blending cosmetic techniques with painting to explore identity and vulnerability. Beginning with self-portraits, her style evolved from abstract to realistic, influenced by the bold, queer art scenes of the 1970s–90s. Cook’s work celebrates individuality and self-expression within today’s cultural mosaic. Since 2024, she has exhibited throughout South Florida. In 2025, she received a Broward County Cultural Division grant for Look What I Made, her debut solo show — a collaborative portrait series featuring eleven local artists.

Jed-Lee Metayer

Jed-Lee Metayer is a self-taught creative who turned to painting as a form of therapy after losing his father during the pandemic. In a society that often denies men safe spaces for emotional expression, the canvas became his sanctuary. Through Metayer’s art, he has cultivated a space where emotions can be released, processed, and transformed — a powerful testament to creativity as a tool for healing. Metayer visually investigates the process of breaking cycles of trauma using solid circles of color or negative space, intentionally devoid of symbols or patterns. Central to his artistic language is the spiral, a symbol of birth, rebirth, and the non-linear path of healing. In a world overwhelmed by distraction, trauma, and outrage, his work invites viewers into a meditative space, offering a moment of stillness and introspection.

Art has always been Sarah Rocca’s way of navigating the intricate landscape of the human mind. Rooted in a commitment to mental health awareness, her practice centers around self-portraiture as a means of visual storytelling. As a fine art photographer, she fluidly moves between digital, drone, and instant formats, embracing whatever tool best serves her vision.

Rocca’s work has been exhibited internationally in group shows, featured in a solo exhibition at Panopticon Gallery in Boston, and showcased on a Times Square billboard in New York City through Art Square New York.

Mikael Semexant

Mikael Semexant is a self-taught Haitian-American artist based in South Florida, specializing in oil painting and drawing. Through his work, he seeks to convey common experiences of connection, community, and intimacy. Primarily, his art depicts real-life moments drawn from his own experiences in a closeknit, nurturing family and community environment. The scenes in his work reflect moments of tenderness and care between loved ones.

The Frost: It’s Not Just for Kids

On a recent sweltering South Florida day, my husband and I, along with our two adult children, were searching for something to do. I floated the idea of lunch and an art museum, but interest was lukewarm. Then my daughter, an avid aquarium fan, perked up: “Let’s go see fish.”

Here’s where it gets funny. I’d long carried a vague sense of guilt for never taking my kids to the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science when they were little. Then I discovered the museum didn’t actually open until 2017. Turns out I hadn’t failed them after all. It simply wasn’t there. What a relief.

So off we went to Miami. I figured it would satisfy my daughter’s urge for fish-watching, but to my surprise, I was hooked too. The Frost isn’t just for families with strollers; I spotted plenty of adults wandering through and learning right alongside the kids.

The aquarium was the first big draw. You can’t miss the massive tank overhead. It’s like looking up into the ocean. (And no, I don’t want to know the engineering involved in suspending a gazillion gallons of water above my head.) The design of the building is nearly as striking as the sharks gliding past.

For me, though, the highlight was the planetarium. I’ve always been captivated by the stars, and the Frost’s dome takes you right into the cosmos. Images fill your entire field of vision, giving the exhilarating sensation of soaring through space. The museum’s website describes it perfectly:

“The dome is tilted forward at 23.5 degrees, allowing its 67-foot span to fill your field of vision as if you’re flying—imagery comes at you from above, below and the peripheral edges, creating a nearly 360-degree view of whatever world you’re in.”

While I still have a soft spot for art—and the Pérez Art Museum Miami is conveniently right next door—I can say with confidence: a visit to the Frost will not disappoint, no matter your age. — Susan Rosser Y

The Philip & Patricia Frost Museum of Science is located at 101 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami.
