Barbara moved with her husband to Ave Maria, but lost him to cancer a little over a year ago. “He was the golfer. I’d just ride along and caddy. But I started to play, and then I started a league.” She is the leader of the Ladies Wednesday Golf League at Panther Run. “It started with four of us who wanted to play together. It’s grown to about 140. We really have a great time. You don’t have to have a handicap, just a good attitude. Everyone is very supportive.”
Getting out there with friends and making new ones is part of life in Ave Maria—A Big Kind of Small Town.

Bursting with family fun and sweetness, the South Florida Watermelon Festival has something for everyone.
On Saturday and Sunday, April 12th and 13th South County Regional Park in Boca Raton will be filled with carnival rides, shows and loads of activities. But of course… center stage: the watermelon. And if the red-ripened juicy fruit isn’t your favorite already, it might be by the end of the weekend. This is your chance to savor the flavor like never before. Local chefs and vendors will craft flavorful drinks and dishes – from sweet to savory – ranging anywhere from small carnival treats to hearty meals. And, if scarfing it down is more your speed, there will be watermelon eating contests scheduled throughout the event where you can get your fill. There will be plenty of entertainment for the family, too. Don’t miss the Pork Chop Revue Pig Show, featuring the talents of Oink the singing pig, and his comical crew which includes a charming llama, playful pups and pint-sized piglets.
And if the kiddoes enjoy carnival rides, there will be a bunch like the Berry-Go-Round, Giant Fun Slide, Water Bumper Boats and the Scrambler. There will also be inflatable bounce houses, obstacle courses and slides for the kids to jump around, climb up and burn some energy on. For a unique experience, festival-goers can step into the Balloon Bubble House, a giant inflatable dome filled with floating balloons where kids can imagine and play.

Young girls and teens with disabilities will get their well-deserved moment to shine in the spotlight when the curtain rises on Sunday, May 18th for the 12th annual Miss Arc Broward Pageant.
Led by event co-chairs Natalie Glusman and Candace Kelley, the event is designed to inspire inclusion, empower and encourage young girls with disabilities, and provide a supportive environment where contestants can build confidence and foster lifelong friendships.
“This beloved event is more than just a pageant. It’s a movement that fosters inclusion and highlights the abilities and achievements of remarkable young women, proving to them that they can dream big and accomplish so much,” Glusman stated in a press release. “It is an opportunity to bring the community together to offer friendship and ensure that these young girls are seen and celebrated for who they are.”
This year, there are more than a dozen pageant contestants ages 6-17 from Broward and Palm Beach Counties vying for the Miss Arc and Little Miss Arc crowns.
“Over the past decade, the Miss Arc Broward Pageant has become a signature event in South Florida, drawing hundreds of attendees and strong support from local businesses, sponsors and volunteers for a truly unforgettable experience,” Arc Broward CEO Julie Price stated in a press release. “The pageant celebrates young women with disabilities and sends an important message that inclusion matters.”
Individual and corporate sponsorships, including presenting sponsor Princess Cruises, ensure that participation is free for contestants, who receive a variety of benefits, including professional photography sessions, confidencebuilding activities and events leading up to the pageant, along with an inclusive and welcoming environment and lifelong memories.
Last year, Kayla Mills was crowned 2024 Miss Arc Broward. Kayla used her platform to advocate for individuals with hidden disabilities. Through her advocacy work, Kayla educates the community on the importance of acceptance, accessibility, inclusion and understanding. And, Mikayla Golka, a Florida Panthers Superfan, was
crowned 2024 Little Miss Arc Broward. Mikayla embraced the pageant as an opportunity to build confidence and make friends.
Community groups, high school clubs, workplaces and groups of individuals are invited to form a cheer squad for the upcoming Miss Arc Broward Pageant. Squads are encouraged to create colorful signs, bring their loudest cheers and help make the event even more magical for the contestants.
More than 20 teen ambassadors representing high schools throughout Broward County are also ready to cheer on the contestants they have been matched with throughout the pageant. Teen ambassadors play a

They say the greatest invention since sliced bread is… well, sliced bread. But frozen puff pastry has to be a close second – trust me, I’ve tried making my own. It’s the Everest of the pastry world. The frozen variety, on the other hand, effortlessly elevates this asparagus tart, making it perfect for brunch, lunch or even a light supper. And since asparagus is in season in April, it’s the perfect time to enjoy this vibrant dish. Plus, if you’re trying to get kids to eat their veggies, sandwiching a green vegetable between buttery puff pastry and a layer of gooey cheese might just do the trick. Who knows? This tart could be their first step toward loving asparagus. This tart is versatile enough for any occasion, and I promise, no one will complain – just maybe don’t try serving it for dessert.
Ingredients:
1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 4 ounces goat cheese, room temperature
2-3 tablespoons sour cream
1-2 cloves garlic, grated
1 bunch asparagus, woody ends trimmed
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
1/2 cup Gruyere cheese, grated
Extra virgin olive oil
Zest of one lemon
Fresh chives, chopped (optional)
Flaky salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
3. In a small bowl, mix the garlic cloves with the goat cheese and sour cream until well combined. Set aside.
4. Unfold the thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, gently roll it out to smooth any creases and so it is about an inch bigger in the length and width. With a sharp knife, lightly score a ½-inch border around the edges of the puff pastry. Transfer the puff pastry to the prepared baking sheet.
5. Spread a thin, even layer of the garlic-infused goat cheese mixture within the scored border. Sprinkle grated Parmesan evenly over the cheese.
6. Arrange the trimmed asparagus spears in a single layer on top of the cheese mixture. Sprinkle grated Gruyere cheese over the asparagus. Drizzle lightly with olive oil.
7. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden, and the asparagus is tender.
8. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with flaky salt, freshly ground black pepper, lemon zest, and chopped chives if using before serving.

BY SUSAN ROSSER
Back in fall, I developed and photographed an autumn salad as a way for South Floridians to enjoy fall flavors without roasting squash or baking pumpkin bread. Because, let’s be real, fall in South Florida is a myth. That night, as I served it, my son’s girlfriend admired my wooden salad bowl, calling it “gorgeous.”
The bowl was a gift from my mother-in-law. And although she has many amazing qualities, cooking is not her strong suit.
I remember a Thanksgiving years ago when she made homemade cranberry sauce and asked for my opinion. She knew something was off. It tasted as if she mashed up aspirins with red food coloring – it was dreadful. She had used a cup of Splenda and just three cups of cranberries. Needless to say, I alleviated her from the cranberry sauce duties.
I love to cook and she was always highly complimentary of everything I prepared for family gatherings. But the one food she truly adored was a salad of any sort. I make a slaw with angel hair cabbage, loads of fresh cilantro, red peppers, scallions and jalapeños tossed in a honey-lime vinaigrette that was one of her all-time favorites. I used to prepare extra to send her home with a care package, knowing she would enjoy it for a few more days.
I have no idea where she found this bowl, but it’s pretty perfect. Over the years, thanks to all the olive oil its seen, the bowl has taken on an even more luscious and deepened hue.
Now my mother-in-law suffers from Alzheimer’s and last year she moved to a skilled nursing facility. It’s in the same retirement village where she and my father-in-law moved shortly before that, so he can visit her every day. Most days, she doesn’t know who he is. She supposes he’s just the nice man who visits.
I remember when my own mother suffered from dementia. Although she always knew who I was, her conversational skills had diminished, and it could be difficult to conjure up topics that she could enjoy and understand. I know how frustrating and heartbreaking those quiet moments can feel when the connection you once had with someone you love seems just out of reach.
So, when I photographed that autumn-inspired salad to publish, I thought of her. I texted the photo to my father-in-law so he could share it with his wife. I doubt she’ll remember the gorgeous wooden salad bowl she gave me, but at least glancing at the photo might give them something simple and pleasant to admire. Even the smallest connections can mean so much.
I know she gave me the bowl as a token of appreciation for the salads I prepared, but I believe there was more to it. The bowl, particularly large and well-suited for family gatherings, was her way of encouraging me to keep creating, to keep bringing our family together around my table. It was her quiet way of supporting my love for cooking and ensuring the tradition of sharing family meals would continue. It’s funny how an object so ordinary – a wooden bowl – can hold so much meaning and so many memories. Yet, all this talk of salads has me seriously craving a big ol’ cheeseburger. Go figure.
Susan Rosser shares a variety of her family recipes, all with one key instruction – that they are made with love.
