Awards Season

Here it is — our annual South Florida Family Favorites issue. I like to think of it as our very own, albeit not-as-glitzy, awards show. All we need is a red carpet.

In our April issue, we featured all the Family Favorite nominees, tabulated from online voting by our readers. One day, the owner of a small ice cream shop called our office. They were interested in being nominated next year and were curious about the nomination process and how it all works. (Readers can nominate any business online.)

As a lover of all things ice cream, I decided to see what this ice cream shop was all about. And although it is a 45-minute ride from my home, way farther than I typically travel for dessert, I decided to set out on an ice cream adventure. My daughter and I made a day of it. We went to see the Lego exhibit at Flamingo Gardens, had lunch and then stopped for the aforementioned ice cream before heading home.

I am guilty of confining myself to a three-mile radius — my house is the center. But South Florida is chock full of exciting stuff to do and fabulous places to eat and drink, and when things don’t go quite as planned, we are lucky to have top-level healthcare and other resources for families.

Our readers vote each year, and while many repeat winners probably deserve to be in a Hall of Fame category (Jaxson’s anyone?), we do discover a few gems.

So peruse this year’s winners. It’s summer and the perfect time to plan a family outing with the kids. And, of course, hang onto this issue as it can be helpful when looking for health care resources, enrichment activities and more. If nothing else, at least treat yourself to some ice cream.

FAVORITE FAMILY-FRIENDLY RESTAURANT

BROWARD: Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour & Restaurant

Jaxson’s is the sort of place where family memories are made. This Broward institution is best known for the frozen concoctions it’s been scooping up from the same family-owned location since 1956. But the true allure of the place goes way beyond the ice cream. Diners are welcomed into a one-of-a-kind rustic dining room with license-plate-deco walls and a full menu that features belly-busting specialties like Broward’s Famous 1-Pound Burger and the half-pound Mile-Long Dog. Each of the seven offerings on the kid’s menu comes with fries and a kid-sized milkshake, ice cream sundae or cone. There’s also a country store with novelty toys, retro knick-knacks and penny candy. 128 S. Federal Hwy., Dania Beach, 954-923-4445 www.jaxsonsicecream.com

BROWARD: Yellow Green Farmers Market

It’s been called the Taj Mahal of farmers’ markets, but just calling it a farmers’ market doesn’t tell the whole story. Sure, there’s lots of farm-fresh food, but with over 30 categories of booths in this open-air space, it’s more like a big, community-minded bazaar. There are artisanal crafts, live music, yoga, art and dance classes, and four 30-foot-high Seminole chickee huts for outdoor seating. 3080 Sheridan St., Hollywood, 954-513-3990 www.ygfarmersmarket.com

MIAMI-DADE: Coconut Grove Farmers Market

Though it features about two dozen other vendors, this year-round Saturday haunt is probably best known for its Glaser Organic Farms tent, which specializes in healthful foods — or as its purveyors call it, “food that loves you back.” A variety of organic fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds and raw vegan foods are sourced from local growers and from around the world. Epicurean delights from a salad bar to raw food pizzas and fruit pies are also available. 3300 Grand Ave., Coconut Grove, www.glaserorganicfarms.com

PALM BEACH: Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market

One of the few remaining family-owned and -operated farmers markets in South Florida, the Bedner family isn’t kidding about the “farm fresh” part. The Power of Waffles

COMFORT FOOD THAT'S FILLED WITH LOVE

I’ve never really been able to explain why I like to cook, but I love to cook. Everyone in my family knows this, so it sets high expectations. Yet, some nights, I dread making dinner — just another task to check off the list. But a few years ago, when my kids were tweens, something happened, and suddenly, I realized why I love to cook — aside from the fact that I love to eat.

For me, cooking truly is a labor of love. It was a Saturday night. My husband Richard and I had a great day and planned to go out to dinner with the kids. One thing led to another, and before you know it — this one is mad at that one and that one is mad at this one. Almost instantly, everyone is in a nasty mood. It was simply one of those nights that devolved into too much drama for any of us to make a viable comeback. Everyone retreated to their private, digital universe.

My dream of a fun family dinner had been shattered.

I woke up early the following day and made a pot of coffee. The house was chilly, quiet and all mine. It was a gorgeous sunny day, and I was determined not to let the previous night’s drama seep into this beautiful Sunday.

I needed a plan.

As I opened the fridge, I noticed half a bottle of buttermilk left over from a baking experiment (orange pound cake). And that’s when it hit me — buttermilk waffles. Before you knew it, I had some bacon in the oven and a new recipe on my iPad.

As I sifted the flour with cinnamon, brown sugar and salt, I thought, “There’s something soothing about sifting.” I was wholly engrossed in the task at hand. The previous night’s debacle was a distant memory.

The power of the waffles was beginning to work.

Just before it was time to pour the batter into the waffle iron, I went to wake everyone up. I expected my sleeping tweens to roll over and tell me they would rather sleep

was pleasantly surprised when they both arose from their beds with modest enthusiasm seeking the waffles I promised.

Everyone seemed practically cheerful as we sat around the kitchen island, sharing the waffles and bacon. So much so that I said aloud, “Wow, the power of waffles.” With the new day, everyone had a fresh attitude. I can’t help but think the waffles played a role in turning the dreary mood around. Those waffles were packed with love and forgiveness, and my whole family knew it.

Many families have their own repertoire of comforting foods with inexplicable powers. For us, potato pancakes, barbecue ribs and homemade chicken soup are near the top. And Grammy’s butter cookies — oh yeah, very powerful healing properties in those butter cookies.

Susan Rosser is the editor of South Florida Family Life Although she loves cook, she is thrilled when anyone brings her lunch — even a tuna sandwich.
