The storyline: The evil Pirates of the dark waters

have invaded the high seas surrounding the island of Pompano! Great wealth exists on this island: gold, silver, jewels, animal skins, tobacco, rum, and paintings. The scallywags schemed a plan to remove every piece of wealth from the island’s inhabitants and take off on their ship! But Sandokan had his own plan: to sail off with the treasures alone!

The Murder Mystery Company was founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2002. It was a modest performance company whose rehearsals, booking, scriptwriting, and auditions were all conducted in the living room of a small apartment. Since then, it has grown across the United States into 40-plus venues in 20 states, each putting on multiple shows every month. Each state has its own director and a cast of local talent — 25 directors and more than 1,000 actors nationwide. Added together, they perform more than 3,500 shows for over 300,000 guests every year.

New SE Fifth Avenue Bridge Features Marine Life Artwork By Dennis Friel The SE Fifth Avenue Bridge, recently reconstructed with money from the city’s G.O. Bond, features colorful marine-inspired artwork created by renowned Pompano Beach-based artist Dennis Friel.

Several years ago, Friel painted the vivid, large-scale marine-life murals that adorn the revamped Atlantic Boulevard Bridge.

The SE 5th Avenue Bridge, built in 1959, was initially scheduled to undergo extensive repairs, but following community input meetings, the City developed a more comprehensive plan to replace, elevate and enhance the bridge. The new bridge, which is located in the Cypress Harbor neighborhood, was completed in May. At each end of the bridge, there are two monument walls depicting marine life scenes of manatees, sea turtles, crabs and dolphins. The artwork is enhanced with lighting.

Several other city bridges are being replaced or improved with G.O. Bond funding – the McNab Road Bridge, the Terra Mar Bridge, and two bridges in Palm Aire over the C-14 canal. The SE 6th Terrace Bridge in the Garden Isles neighborhood is being rebuilt with funding from the city’s Capital Improvements Program. The plan is for these bridges to also include artwork. Y

Pompano Amends Its Code to Encourage Mixed-Use, Mixed-Income Development on Commercial Corridors The City Commission recently approved a change to the city’s zoning code to incentivize welldesigned mixed-use and mixedincome developments along the Dixie Highway corridor, and along other specific commercial corridors within Pompano Beach.

The initiative began at the planning and zoning board meeting in February 2021, when Chair Fred Stacer started a discussion related to the city’s interest in beautifying the Dixie Highway corridor following the city’s investments in the roadway itself through the G.O. Bond program.

Stacer said the expectation of quality design for new development should increase. This discussion evolved into the creation of a Dixie Highway Task Force by the chair of the city’s economic development council, Tom DiGiorgio. Stacer was appointed as chair of the task force.

The task force adopted the goal of creating mixed-income and mixeduse regulations for Dixie Highway, and ultimately, for all applicable commercial corridors of the city, with additional requirements and incentives in those areas where deconcentration of poverty has been identified as a priority.

According to a study conducted on behalf of the city by the Lambert Advisory Group, Pompano Beach has the highest number of incomerestricted housing units in the County (2,140 units), followed by Fort Lauderdale (1,941 units).

Additionally, Pompano Beach has the third-highest proportionate share of income-restricted units to non-income-restricted units in the County — for every 25 residential

units in Pompano Beach, one unit is income-restricted. A large proportion of income-restricted units are being developed in census tracts where there is already a high concentration of existing rent-restricted or subsidized units.

The new change to the city’s code uses criteria set forth in the affordable housing incentive policy that Broward County adopted in March 2021. It also integrates the mixed-income housing policy the city adopted in December 2021 to encourage affordable housing and provide relief from the adverse impacts of the concentration of income-restricted housing within Pompano Beach.

The County’s policy allows additional density (more dwelling units per acre) in residential land use categories and unlimited density in “Commerce” and “Activity Center” land use categories for projects on eligible roadways that include affordable housing.

The city’s new mixed-income housing policy intends to be more restrictive than the County’s policy: A minimum of 50% non-income-

restricted residential units will be required in residential developments that are within a half-mile radius of an incomerestricted residential development project.

Density for properties with a B-3 Commercial zoning, which is predominant along the commercial corridors, will be regulated by the city’s zoning code.

Along Dixie Highway (between city limits) and North Powerline Road (between Atlantic Boulevard and NW 15th Street), a minimum of 80% non-incomerestricted residential units will be required. The City would provide a minimum 50% density bonus as an additional incentive to redevelop those properties inclusive of the non-incomerestricted units.

The new regulations also set design standards that must be maintained by all development along these commercial corridors, including light industrial uses such as warehouses, which are permitted along corridors like Dixie Highway. In addition, a >>>

New Waterfront Condominium Is Planned Along Riverside Drive A 10-story condominium called Entourage in the Sun, is planned for two side-by-side lots located at 407 and 419 N. Riverside Drive, along the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway in Pompano Beach.

A site plan application submitted to the City by Entourage Florida Development LLC, managed by Jean Campeau of Québec, Canada, is currently under review.

Entourage Florida Development LLC purchased the 0.93-acre property for $9.3 million in April.

The southern half of the site is currently vacant and the northern half is occupied by the three-story, 23-unit Stratford Apartments, which were completed in 1966.

The apartment building would be demolished to make way for the new development.

The Entourage in the Sun condominium would have 42 units,

ranging in size from 1,785 to 3,690 square feet. There would be 16 twobedroom units, 23 three-bedroom units and three penthouses.

Stacer told the Commission he talked extensively with the redevelopment team of John Knox Village to make sure the three blocks that abut Dixie Highway from SW 3rd Street to SW 6th Street were properly integrated into the city’s new policy for the commercial corridors, as well as the desires of John Knox Village.

Stacer said the new policy “is probably going to be cutting edge for the county.”

Pompano to coordinate with them regarding what happens on the Dixie Highway corridor, said Stacer.

Stacer noted that the new guidelines will bring the city’s corridors into the 21st century design criteria, and will help protect single-family residences from the “massive amount of pressure” the city is going to experience due to an increase in population.

“This sets the stage for years to come,” said Mayor Rex Hardin.

“It’s not going to transform any roadway today, but this will help guide development in the future for many, many years.” Y

Ritz-Carlton Residences in Pompano Beach Launches Its Sales Gallery

Fortune International Group and Oak Capital, the developers of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Pompano Beach, recently held a grand opening for an over 4,000 square foot sales gallery at 1380 S. Ocean Blvd., where the beachfront portion of the two-tower luxury condo project will be located. The project will also occupy the property across the street, along the Intracoastal Waterway.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Pompano Beach is being touted as the most expensive development in the city, with units starting at just under $1 million in The Marina Tower and approximately $3.5 million in The Beach Tower.

THE POWER OF SAYING “NO”

I THINK WE LIVE IN THE BUSIEST TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY. WE HAVE MORE DEMANDS ON OUR TIME THAN EVER BEFORE. WE WORK LONGER HOURS, HAVE MORE RESPONSIBILITIES, have more people to communicate with, and are inundated with distractions. The worst part is it may not slow down anytime soon.

In fact, things may get busier.

We opened up our first martial arts school on June 1, 2003.

Undoubtedly, the families we teach today have far more on their plates than the families we worked with nearly two decades ago.

I was born in the 70s, and kids’ schedules back then were nothing compared to what they are now. Kids have more homework, tests, and projects than ever before.

Football and baseball coaches demand kids attend four or five practices per week plus games. It’s insane!

Like the philosopher Susan Powter said in the ‘90s, we need to “Stop the insanity!”

How do we stop the insanity? How do we slow down to make time for the essential things in life?

It starts with one powerful, straightforward response – NO! What I have learned over the years is saying “Yes” is easy.

Do you want to go out for happy hour? Yes! Do you want to go to this event? Yes! Are you available to be a part of this project? Yes! Can you squeeze in another meeting at the end of the day? Yes! Saying yes is easy and seems to make people happy. Well, everyone except one person, you!

When we are over-scheduled, too busy, have too many priorities, or too many tasks, we get overwhelmed and irritable.

When we have too many things to do, most people do nothing!

We get stuck in “paralysis of analysis,” trying to prioritize.

Suddenly, turning on Netflix seems like a good escape from figuring out the labyrinth of your schedule.

A lion tamer keeps away an aggressive lion with only a bar stool because the lion interprets the four legs as separate threats, so the lion does nothing!

Saying no creates calm, focus, and serenity throughout your day. “No” eliminates tasks and responsibilities that make their way onto your calendar.

To feel good about saying no, we have to be clear about when to say yes. When you are clear about your top three goals, vital

functions, metrics, and priorities, what is simply a distraction becomes clear!

When to say Yes You can say yes when in your mind the answer is a “Hell yeah!”

Do you want to go to that concert? Hell yeah!

Do you want to go to dinner with that couple? Hell yeah!

Do you want to be a part of this particular project at work? Hell yeah!

If you think, “well, I don’t know. I guess so. OK, sure,” you should say no.

Creating clarity on the following areas makes saying “no” much easier.

Top three goals: What are the top three goals that will make the most significant difference in your life?

Vital priorities: What are the top three priorities that will move you closer to your big three goals by making sure they are done?

Vital functions: What are the top three things that you, and only you, can do that moves the needle towards those big three goals?

Vital metrics: What are the top three numbers you must pay attention to, to ensure you are making measurable progress?

No doubt saying no is hard, so say it polite and friendly way.

Say, “No, thank you. I appreciate you thinking of me. I can’t make it, but if that changes, I will let you know.”

I think we have all learned that more is not better. More things to do, people to see, and commitments to live up to are not the recipe for a better life. Identifying what is truly important and keeping those things in the forefront will make life far more enjoyable. Summertime Memories THE FOURTH OF JULY, SKEEBALL, AND FISHING, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER

I’VE PROBABLY WRITTEN ABOUT THE FOURTH OF JULY BEFORE. IF YOU REMEMBER THAT, WELL, YOUR MEMORY’S BETTER THAN MINE. ALSO, SUE ME; I’M PRETTY SURE “plagiarizing oneself” isn’t a thing. Plus, this is the United States; what says “patriotism” better than “lawsuit?”

Wow, did I digress! That’s a star-spangled digression, even for me.

Sorry for instantly hitting you with puns. Or maybe I’m not; you don’t know.

Anyway, I love, love, love the Fourth of July. Did I mention that I love the Fourth of July? And what I love best about it is that I’m lucky enough to now live within — wait for it — walking distance to the beach.

This has been my lifelong dream. As a child heading home from the Point Pleasant, New Jersey Fourth of July fireworks, I didn’t care about the traffic at all. Why would I? I wasn’t driving.

Also, that night kicked off the magical summers of my childhood, punctuated by — wait for it again — weekly fireworks at the

boardwalk. Yes, boys and girls: every week, they had fireworks. It was amazing.

Not amazing were my skeeball skills. I was beyond terrible.

This was problematic because the summer I turned seven, I desperately wanted my own fishing pole; the arcade had a baby blue one that cost about four billion tickets. All that summer, each week before the fireworks (did I mention that they had weekly fireworks?), my parents would give me some amount of money (maybe $1? skeeball cost a nickel, so that got me 20 games; you’re welcome for the math lesson).

I don’t think I could have earned enough tickets for that fishing pole, given my lack of skeeball skills. Maybe my parents bought more tickets — was that a thing? Could you make up the difference in cash? I have no idea.

Anyway, by the time my seventh birthday rolled around in mid-August, I’d magically earned enough tickets for that fishing pole, and oh-my-god, it was terrific. Fishing with my dad off the docks near our home is one of my favorite childhood memories. Luckily, I was better at fishing than skeeball.

So — what does this have to do with the Fourth of July? Duh. Everything. For me, a beach kid from way back, the Fourth is sand, and sea, and fireworks, boardwalk food, and family memories. And yes, gratitude that my Greek grandparents landed on U.S. shores in the early 1900s.

Also — I know — the turtles. Yes, I love the turtles, and I’m aware that fireworks might not be great for them.

And I have cats and a dog, and it’s not their favorite day of the year. I’m careful to keep them inside (the cats never go out anyway), and my dog loves her thundershirt.

This year, the City of Pompano has — tada — a rain date for the fireworks. Finally. Unsurprisingly, it’s July 5. Hopefully, we won’t need it, but it’s good to be prepared. So unless there’s a hurri….. nonono — not even finishing that thought. Y

Pompano Beach 4th of July Firework Extravaganza

Beach Blvd COST: Free WHAT: The City of Pompano Beach Parks and Recreation Department presents the Annual 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza. The 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza will begin at 5:30 pm with live music from Shadow Creek Band, one of the most diverse bands in South Florida.

Beginning at 7 pm, the Derek Mack Band will take the stage to perform some of your favorite Top Hits from the 80s through today! All live music will take place on the beach, just south of the Fisher Family Pier.

Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome; however, personal fireworks, glass containers, alcohol, personal drones and pets are prohibited. The Fisher Family Pier will be closed Monday, July 4 and reopen for regular hours on Tuesday, July 5.

Available parking is located at the end of Atlantic Blvd and A1A. Both street parking and the pier garage are also available. Starting at 8:45pm, eastbound vehicular traffic going to the barrier island will be shut down for the duration of the fireworks show. They will reopen once the fireworks have ended. Pedestrians will still have access to walk across the bridge the entire day and night.

International Turkey Burgers SWITCH UP YOUR INDEPENDENCE DAY BURGER GAME

Celebrate July Fourth with these eclectic turkey burgers. Hey, what’s more American than turkey — the centerpiece of Thanksgiving? But these burgers have a bit of an international flare — borrowing from Asian and Mexican cuisines. Yet, in keeping with a July Fourth theme, these babies are topped with good old-fashioned super-melty slices of American cheese for a flavor bomb of a burger!

FOR THE BURGERS 1 pound ground turkey (preferably dark meat) 4 scallions, finely chopped 2-3 garlic cloves, grated 1 1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and grated 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon ketchup 2 teaspoons mustard (any kind you like) 4 hamburger buns (see note) 4 slices of American cheese (see note) FOR THE SLAW 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice 3 tablespoons neutral oil 1 clove garlic, grated 1 tablespoon honey 1 x-ounce bag angel hair cabbage 2-3 jalapeños, finely chopped (optional) 1 cup cilantro, roughly chopped Salt and pepper to taste

side. Repeat with the remaining burgers. (If you cook the burgers in two batches, you can keep them warm in a 225 oven.) The patties should be cooked through to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Remove the burgers from the pan, place a slice of American cheese on four burgers, and then top with another burger. The residual heat will melt the cheese.

Step 4: Assemble. Spread spicy mayo on each side of the buns. Place lettuce, tomato, and onion and stacked burgers on the bottom buns. Add some of the slaw. Top with the top bun. Serve any remaining slaw on the side.

Note: This recipe makes 8 patties. You can certainly serve them in single portions instead of stacking them. Just remember you will need 8 buns and 8 slices of American cheese. Also, no one likes to admit they like American cheese, but it is perfect here because of its impressive meltability.

SPICY MAYO 1/2 cup mayonnaise Sriracha to taste TOPPINGS Butter lettuce Sliced red onions Sliced tomatoes PREPARATION Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the lime juice, oil, garlic and honey and whisk to combine. Add the cabbage, jalapeño and cilantro and mix with the dressing.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Refrigerate until ready to use.

Step 2: In a medium bowl, whisk about 1/2 cup of mayonnaise. Then add sriracha to taste. Set aside.

Step 4: Place the gro3nd turkey, scallions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, ketchup and mustard in a large bowl and mix until well combined.

Form the meat into 8 thin patties.

Heat a large skillet, preferably cast iron, on medium-high heat. Place four burgers in the pan, cook for about 4 minutes, then flip and cook on the other

In 1962, Ted and Monica Johnson, and their 16-year-old son, Jerry, bought a fuel dock and rental boat business on the Intercoastal Waterway in Pompano Beach. From the very beginning, they employed a core value to run their business: Treat customers the way you want to be treated yourself. The family worked the business together, forging a name for themselves in the waterside community.

A THREE-GENERATION FAMILY BUSINESS

PBMC continues as a family-run business.

After Jerry married June Burkert he added two wonderful children, Jill and Jon. As teenagers, both Jill and Jon worked at the dealership.

Jill recounts that she started working helping out in 1989 at age 15, and Jon quickly chimes in that he was only 14 when he started working at the dealership in 1993. Jill earned her associate’s degree and attended the University of Central Florida but returned full-time to PBMC in 1996 to run the day-to-day parts of the business, which she still manages today.

Jill also loves being fully involved with the South Florida Grady-White Club activities, helping plan the gatherings and trips that are so important to their customers.

Since 1995, Jon has worked full-time at Pompano Beach Marine Center. He is an integral part of the business at PBMC. On any given day, Jon can be seen doing a boat demo, fixing an engine, or helping a new couple on their first day with their new Grady-White boat. He might be wearing the

General Manager hat, supervising some work at the marina, or leading the South Florida Grady-White Club on an adventure.

Jerry is still working hard and smart at Pompano Beach Marine Center, managing things in his quiet, unassuming way — maybe a little more behind the scenes these days. He and June still make the run-up I-95 to pick up boats at the Grady-White factory and enjoy time together talking and planning. Today, all of them are still working hard and holding true to their founding belief — treat customers the way you want to be treated.

Pompano Beach Marine Center (PBMC) took on Grady-White Boats which turned out to be a terrific partnership and is now the cornerstone of success for PBMC.

1988

A new happy chapter began at Pompano Beach Marine Center, when Jerry married June Burkert and added two wonderful children, Jill and Jon.

1990

PBMC became a full-line Yamaha dealer which also turned out to be a good move.

Summery Salads COOL INSPIRATION FOR HOT SUMER DAYS

BY MRS. KOSSENFLOFFER A few years ago, I read a piece in the New Yorker magazine entitled “It’s Time to Admit that Iceberg is a Superior Lettuce”

by Helen Rosner. Iceberg does get a bad rap and, as Ms. Rosner points out, “has never quite managed to secure a place in the gourmet pantry.” On a hot summer Florida day, the cool crunch of iceberg lettuce can be a true tonic.

Crunchy Green Salad FOR THE DRESSING

1 5.3-ounce container of Greek yogurt (see note) 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 1 lemon) 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves 3/4 cup fresh basil leaves 1 cup fresh Italian parsley, roughly chopped 1 jalapeno (optional for kick) 2 scallions 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper

FOR THE SALAD

1 head iceberg lettuce, torn into bite sized pieces 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally into bite sized pieces 2 cups snap peas or snow pea pods, into bite sized pieces 5-6 radishes, sliced 3-4 ounces blue cheese, crumbled

PREPARATION

To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse to combine and then run until the dressing is smooth and creamy. Pour into a jar and refrigerate until ready to use.

Prepare an ice bath by filling a large bowl with ice and water, and a little kosher salt. To make the salad, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add 2-3 tablespoons of salt. Add the asparagus and cook for about 1 minute, until bright green. Remove the asparagus with a spider or slotted spoon and place in the ice bath. Add the snow peas to the boiling water and cook for 30 seconds. Remove with a spider or slotted spoon and place in the ice bath.

Arrange the iceberg on a platter or salad bowl. Sprinkle the vegetables and crumbled blue cheese. Serve with the green goddess dressing on the side.

Note: You can substitute mayonnaise or sour cream for the yogurt. Or you can use half mayo, half yogurt.

You can also use any green vegetables you like.

Peachy Halloumi Chopped Salad with Lemony Tahini Dressing Take advantage of summer stone fruits and throw them in your salads. That little dash of sweetness is seasonal bliss.

FOR THE SALAD

halloumi cheese, chopped romaine, torn grape tomatoes, halved red onion, chopped radishes, chopped Persian cucumbers, chopped nectarines or peaches, chopped avocado, chopped sunflower seeds No amounts are given for the salad ingredients because you can put as much of any ingredient as you like.

If you want a more lettuce-centric salad, add lettuce. Or if you want more of a chopped veggie vibe, leave the lettuce out entirely.

FOR THE DRESSING

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup tahini 2 to 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 garlic clove, grated 2 teaspoons honey 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper, to taste ice water as needed

PREPARATION

Cook the halloumi. Heat a skillet, prefarably cast iron or non-stick over medium heat. Add halloumi slices to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden, then flip and repeat on the other side. If you cook in a regular skillet, add a bit of oil to the pan.

To make the dressing, simply place all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk away. Or, you can place them in a mason jar, close it and shake, shake, shake.

Pile all the salad ingredients in a bowl, add dressing to taste and toss thoroughly.Y

Thai-Inspired Dumpling Dinner Salad A dinner salad must have some flare — a little panache that elevates it above and beyond hum-drum lunch options.

This Thai-inspired salad is the complete package — with a swoon-worthy peanut dressing and store-bought dumplings.

Everyone will be delighted with the layers and layers of flavors and textures.

FOR THE SALAD

1-2 heads romaine, torn (see note) 2-3 Persian cucumbers, sliced 3-4 carrots, shredded or julienned 2-4 scallions, thinly sliced 1-2 jalapeños, sliced 1 peach or mango, cubed 1 avocado, sliced Fresh cilantro, roughly chopped Frozen Asian-style dumplings, cooked according to package instructions Roasted peanuts, roughly chopped Lime wedges for serving

FOR THE PEANUT DRESSING

1/4 cup toasted sesame oil 1/4 cup rice vinegar 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter 3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon Thai red curry paste 1 garlic clove, grated Juice of 1 lime

FOR DIPPING SAUCE

1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce 1/4 cup rice vinegar 1 scallion, sliced

PREPARATION

To make the dressing, combine all the ingredients (see note about the lime juice) in a medium bowl and whisk until blended. Set aside.

To make the dipping sauce, combine the soy sauce and vinegar in a bowl. Sprinkle the scallions in and set the sauce aside.

In a large salad bowl, combine the romaine, cucumbers, carrots, scallions, jalapeño, peach or mango, and cilantro and toss.

Cook the dumplings according to package directions.

Before serving, toss the salad with some of the dressing. Start with a little bit and add if needed. I like to toss the salad with just a little dressing and then drizzle more over the salad. Place the dumplings and avocado on top. If you want to be fancy, drizzle a little extra dressing over the dumplings and avocado. Serve with the extra dressing on the side and the dipping sauce for the dumplings.

Notes: You can serve the dressing on the side. I sometimes toss the salad with a touch of fresh lime and a hint of a neutral oil like vegetable oil and serve the paunut dressing on the side so everyone can take as much as they like.

Use any lettuce you like. Keep in mind that the peanut dressing is substantial, so you should use sturdy lettuce or cabbage to stand up to the dressing. Y JULY 2022 • pointpubs.com

Local Lighthouse Point fly-fisherman Derek Ulbrich finds the ultimate jungle experience and fly-fishing paradise in a deeply remote Bolivian national park amongst indigenous people of the Tsimane Tribe.

Your native guides, using their wooden push poles, steady the dug-out canoe next to the stream’s bank. You jump out onto a long, moss-covered boulder, fly rod in hand, and scramble upstream. Your guide is ahead of you, elevated on another mossy rock. He is squatting, with frozen intensity, as he points upstream with his left hand and emphatically waves you forward with his right. He points to a good spot for you to stand below and makes the universal symbol for big fish with hands wide apart. Something great lurks ahead. Heart rate: 90.

You don’t pay attention to the huge yellow and blue macaws squawking as they pass above, crossing the narrow canyon that towers over you. You hear only the rushing stream, and the sound of your reel as you strip out 60 feet of line and prepare your cast. Your guide, Santiago, and you quickly discuss the fish’s location. It is sitting in the fast current, against the rock wall on the right where the stream is only 8 feet wide and 2 feet deep. You check your back cast situation; jungle plants, boulders and logs behind you wait

eagerly to foil your attempt. You have only a very narrow corridor to work with. The cast is straight upstream, 20 meters into fast current; level of difficulty in the 9’s. Heart rate: increasing.

It’s showtime. With a few false casts you feed out the correct amount of line and land the fly exactly where you wanted, 5 feet in front of the fish.

“Strip, strip, strip!” your guide shouts as you furiously try to keep up with the current rushing towards you.

The fish turns and attacks the fly but the current is too fast, you feel it, you see it, but you can’t get tight to strip set the hook. You lift the rod in a last ditch effort to connect but the fly comes free and sails back past you at 100 mph. Brief and reflexive profanity ensues. You keep the false cast going though, ready for another shot. You still haven’t snagged a bush. Heart rate: 105 While keeping your false casts going your guide points again. He sees another fish, 20 feet farther up between a rock and a stick. Impossible you think. That is too far, no room left behind you, target too small, going to snag a tree any second... You muster your best double haul and release a Hail Mary upstream. The 9-weight line rolls out like it has a mind of its own, landing the huge fly exactly where you hoped. You can’t believe it. Perfection. It is happening! Heart rate: 120.

“Strip, strip, strip!!!” he yells as you see the fish turn, charge the fly, and eat. You concentrate on your hands to get tight, setting the hook in that bony mouth full of razor sharp teeth. Heart: not beating....

downstream. The native guides quickly move the cuamba out of the way as the fish takes to the air with a dramatic cart-wheeling leap and then continues downstream into the backing. The fish is big. It is your biggest yet anyway. Maybe 9 or 10 kilos. Heart rate: resumes somewhere in the 130s.

After a couple minutes and six more jumps, you coax your trophy to shore and your guide grabs it. You stand there and stare for a moment in a sort of stunned amazement. You carefully pick up the fish for some quick pictures before releasing this beautiful creature back to where it belongs. Your guide is ecstatic. You look at your native guides who are normally quite stoic and reserved.

They are both smiling. You did good. Looking up you take in the prehistoric scenery wrapped around you; this place is straight out of the pages of National Geographic. You cheer, “HAMSI!!!” — the Tsimane word for beautiful. It is day three and you still can’t believe you are here. Time to go find another fish.

The location is Sécure River Lodge at Asunta village (S 15.49.821, W 066.26.581) in the Western edge of Bolivia’s TIPNIS National Park and Indigenous Territory (TIPNIS stands for Territorio Indígena Parque Nacional Isiboro Sécure). It is a two-hour flight by Cessna from Santa Cruz to a tiny airstrip carved into the jungle. The majority of this

flight is over roadless, virgin jungle canopy interrupted only by scores of winding rivers and streams that have zero fishing pressure. The lodge is located where the crystal clear sub-Andean headwater streams empty into the rainforest and feed the rest of the Amazon basin. The fish are the Golden Dorado (Cazare) — arguably the most aggressive, acrobatic and exciting fresh water fly fishing target species in the world.

The outfitter is Untamed Angling, the brainchild of founder Marcelo Perez. The model he created is unique.

It is a cooperation between various groups of indigenous peoples and Untamed Angling to provide an eco-conscious and sustainable source of income for the indigenous people, while providing the stuff of fantasy for anglers seeking big fish and adventure in hyper-remote locations.

This is a barbless, fly fishing only, catch and release fishery.

These fish are treated with great respect. The dorados here are basically sacred to the locals who see them as partners in their hunt for the sabalo, a carp-like species that the dorados feast on during their annual upstream spawning migration. Caught by bow and arrow, Sabalo are a staple for the indigenous people and occupy the same ecological niche as mullet in Florida.

The fish I describe above, while not my biggest, was the

most memorable to me. It was the location, the hunt, the difficulty in presenting the fly, the smiles on my guides’ faces…. everything. That fish was caught in Ashahana Creek, a narrow and shallow, crystal clear tributary to the much larger Sécure river. It is like a jungle trout stream except these “trout” can push 40 lbs., are golden with giant heads, and can bite your finger off. There are two other less common species to target here. The Yatorana (Pirapatinga) vaguely resemble shad, also have vicious dentures, and fight and jump their hearts out. They are the least common

The park is a window into what things looked like a million years ago, still pristine and untouched. of the three and grow to over 10 lbs. Pound-for-pound, Yatorana are the strongest. They will take streamers and large dry flies. Then there is the Pacu (Tambaqui). Many of you are familiar with these as they can be found in the canals of South Florida as expats of the aquarium trade.

They are essentially a super-sized vegetarian piranha and are usually caught presenting fruit and nut imitations in the deep slow moving pools. Pacu even jump from time to SPECIAL TRAVEL SECTION • pointpubs.com

time and are referred to here as jungle permit. To catch all three in one day is a called a Tsimane Grand Slam, a club I was lucky enough to join.

The 70 local natives who live in the village of Asunta belong to the Tsimane tribe (Chi-mon-nay). This is their forest and they are in tune with every aspect of the river, jungle and wildlife. What they say goes. The children here start to learn the use of a bow and arrow at 2 years of age. They still live mostly as they always have getting all they need from the forest and the river. They also raise small crops of papaya, corn, pineapple and bananas.

Tribe members older than 30 remember a time before any regular contact with the outside world. Interacting with and learning from the natives is a special part of the entire visit.

It was interesting to learn about their culture.

For example, they don’t fight with each other and if a man were to strike his wife he would be thrown out of the village. Men are allowed two wives. They elect the leader of the village each year. They have many legends but no concept of God. They have no words in their language to express “thank you.”

The thing they fear most are stingrays and their absolute favorite thing to eat is monkey. They have very wide feet adapted over millennia for this area and walk barefoot all the time. They are very kind, noticeably shy, hard working and incredibly strong.

Another interesting note is that the Tsimane people were ranked as having the healthiest hearts of any group on the planet. Every member of the village is involved in some way with supporting the lodge. A trip to TIPNIS isn’t just fly fishing nirvana, it is really about just being there. This isn’t

a fishing trip, it is a complete jungle experience.

Untamed Angling runs six such lodges, three in Bolivia and three in Brazil providing opportunities to fish for the Amazon’s greatest game fishes: Dorado, Peacock Bass, Arapaima, Wolf fish, Payara, Pacu and several other species. In each case, you are a guest fishing indigenous land and guided by local Indians along with an expert fishing guide/interpreter. You travel the river by locally constructed, motorized dugouts called cuambas. At this location, nearly every time I stepped out of the cuamba, I was greeted with animal tracks in the sand along the shore— lots of them. The tracks of Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot,

Tapir, Peccary, Hochi, Kinkajou, Caiman and tiny forest deer called Chinyu are everywhere. In the air and trees are a bewildering variety of birds including all sorts of parrots and toucans.

At night many beautiful and bizarre insects visit the outer walls of your tent for your inspection by flashlight.

TIPNIS covers 5,000 square miles and is among the most biologically diverse places on the planet. According to Wiki, there are 218 mammal, 992 bird, 157 amphibian and 131 reptile species known in TIPNIS. There are likely thousands of unnamed insect and plant species here. The park is a

window into what things looked like a million years ago, still pristine and untouched.

After a day of fishing you return to the comforts of the lodge which was expertly built by the villagers using sustainable materials from the local forest.

Despite being so remote, this is five-star jungle living.

The camp chef is an expert gourmet. It was shocking to be eating such lavish meals considering where we actually were. Queen beds in large private tents, ceiling fans and lighting, private baths with hot showers, satellite internet Wi-Fi, ice cold beer and soda round out the comforts. The small group of about four to eight lucky anglers who visit here each week have want for nothing. The camp generator shuts off around 10:30 and it is time to get some rest for the next day’s fishing excursion. A day of fishing here can be quite strenuous, but if your adrenaline won’t stop dumping and you find you can’t sleep, solar powered batteries provide light in the pitch black darkness of the jungle. The jungle wakes up when the sun goes down. Sitting alone on my porch late at night, in the pitch black, looking at the stars, and listening to the sounds of the jungle, was simply awesome. From haunting chirps and calls, to violent crashing in the brush, each new sound seems more mysterious than the last.

A trip to Asunta Lodge may not be for everyone. I would not recommend a person going there unless/ until they are pretty good with a fly rod, so practice a lot before you go. I also wouldn’t suggest anyone with a heart issue or who is in poor physical shape go.

Standing and walking in wet boots in the sun for eight to nine hours a day, for six days straight, while casting large flies on 9 and 10 weight lines is physically quite demanding. Ninety percent of the fishing is wading or walking the banks of the river. They don’t let you just tromp through the jungle here either. There are things that can bite you that you would surely regret; this is not a place you want to get hurt. Visiting here is very safe but the nearest hospital is a long way away and requires a plane to come get you. I am pretty sure it is impossible to land on that airstrip in the dark.

hen considering the perfect weekend getaway, two essentials come to mind: One must return feeling relaxed, and it is imperative to feel as if you visited somewhere distant. Good news — you don’t need to travel very far to accomplish both of these weekend goals.

Just northwest of Orlando, Mount Dora is only a little over a three-hour drive from Lighthouse Point, yet it feels a world away.

As the name implies, it’s a touch hilly. No, not Alpine-style hilly, but the flat South Florida landscape does give way to a more rolling hill scene. This Central Florida retreat feels more like the American South than the palm tree-laden beach scenes of South Florida. In Mount Dora, the ancient stately oak trees outnumber the palms by a large margin. And It’s not uncommon for a server to ask, “what ya’ll havin’?” with a touch of a southern drawl. A visit to Mount Dora is akin to living inside a live-action version of a Norman Rockwell illustration.

It just feels different.

Still, Mount Dora is over three hours away, which places it outside of the daytrip zone, so it is best to plan a weekend.

The Lakeside Inn is Mount Dora’s biggest hotel and, as the name suggests, is down

by Lake Dora yet close to all the downtown action. There are also several quaint bed and breakfasts to choose from and a plethora of listings on Airbnb.com.

The city is famous for its festivals, and the lodging does fill up during festival weekends, so it is best to plan ahead.

The Renninger’s Antique Extravaganza happens several times a year and is a huge draw, as well as the art and crafts fairs that happen throughout the season.

There is even an Annual Scottish Highland Festival with live bagpipers marching through downtown. And the Taste of Mount

The Lake County Historical Society offers a Citrus Label Tour — a driving tour steeped in history.

Visitors can scan the QR code on each sign to learn more about each label and the citrus industry. The tour is a perfect chance to drive through the small rural towns of Lake County while taking in this naturally magnificent part of Florida.

Dora Festival will satisfy visiting foodies.

The Blueberry Festival is in its eighth year — yes, there is s a festival for everyone.

Shopping and Dining

Downtown Mount Dora has an abundance of dining options — from super casual all the way up to fine dining. The city enforces an ordinance that prohibits chains and franchises in the downtown area, ensuring the charming village keeps its mom-andpop small-town atmosphere.

We were impressed with the fish and chips at the Magical Meat Boutique, a British Style Pub serving all the classics.

An unexpected find was Wave Sushi and Asian Bistro. The restaurant serves sushi, sushi-tacos, sushi-burritos and sushiburgers. And for a small fee, you can have any sushi creation coated with flaming’ hot Cheeto dust. Yes, we tried it, and yes, we liked it.

You can also find Cuban, Italian and Indian fare downtown, a plethora of ice cream and gelato offerings, and several more high-end dining options. There is even a gluten-free restaurant — The Salted Fry — specializing in — you guessed it — French fries.

But the clear stand-out is 1921, an impressive establishment housed in a former home constructed in 1921.

along with a path that winds through the preserved natural site will calm your soul (who doesn’t need that these days?) and of course help you get in a few steps. There is also a plethora of wild life and this is a favorite spot for bird watchers. Word to the wise — watch out for alligators.

Catboat Adventures offers guided boat tours of Lake Dora — another fantastic way to see the area. Drive your own two-person powered catamaran across beautiful Lake Dora through the Dora Canal and into Lake Eustis. This guided tour is two hours long and narrated by knowledgeable guides.

For the more adventurous, Tavares, also known as the seaplane capital of North America, is only a 10-minute drive from Mount Dora. You can ride in a seaplane
