I have always enjoyed cooking. At the end of the day, preparing a meal whisks me out of my day-to-day grind and into a bubble void of deadlines and headlines. It’s nearly impossible to worry about anything while you are chiffonading basil or supreming a grapefruit.

So sometime in September, with my lack of a hobby weighing on me, I decided to become a food blogger. I love food.

I love photos of food. I love to snap pictures of food. It seemed like a no-brainer. So I launched a website and a corresponding Instagram account. Let the fun begin.

Except it wasn’t fun.

Once I started doing it — cooking and photographing and posting — it nearly killed me. OK, I exaggerate, but it was way more work than I anticipated. Instead of enjoying cooking, it was stressing me out. Plus, I was somewhat discouraged at how difficult it was to gain a following. There are no less than several zillion Instagram accounts with a focus on food, and many also have a gazillion followers. I was dejected. My whole plan had backfired.

So I quit.

Then, my husband Richard, in a sheer and utter moment of brilliance said to me, “Honey-bunny, all hobbies are frustrating from time to time.”

Somehow, that simple statement really clicked for me. Images of my mother ripping out rows upon rows of knitting because of a botched stitch flashed before me.

And I thought of Richard who toiled in our garage for months building a wall unit out of maple. Some days he would walk in the house and say, “I had another visit from the f*ck-up fairy today.” This meant that a small error resulted in scrapping an entire section and starting over.

Anyway, I got back to it. And the whole experience has taught me so much beyond cooking.

Doing anything well requires a great deal of care. Even if it is just a hobby. It may not be difficult work. It may not be physically taxing or take huge leaps of stunning intellect — but you must care about what you are doing. And if you care enough, there will always be some accompanying stress. It’s unavoidable.

I found that being true to myself was key. There are so many food bloggers and at first I was tempted to imitate some of my favorites, both in their photography style and even in the foods they cooked. But that never worked. Those were always the photos I struggled with. And for a while I made lists of food categorized by color. I thought I could not only plan a meal this way, but also a crazy-good colorful photo. Not so much. I played around for a while, but finally found my comfort zone. If I wouldn’t serve it to my friends or family, it’s not going to work.

I call this revelation “be true to the food.”

Consistency is paramount. Followers should know what to expect. I like to experiment with different cuisines and flavors — but I like to think that anything I post can be accomplished in any home kitchen. Hey, it’s not brain surgery. A fabulous cook I knew once said “If you can read, you can cook.”

On a recent Sunday morning, I decided to make one of my favorite flavor combos — honeydew melon with blue cheese and basil. It was a busy day and I didn’t have time to make dinner, yet I wanted to post something (trying to be consistent). I prepared and photographed the melon, but it just wasn’t working. None of the photos had that I-want-to-reach-in-and-grab-that-melon quality I was going for. No matter how I changed the light or the angle, the fruit was not enticing.

Feeling a bit discouraged, I called Richard in to the kitchen to enjoy the honeydew.

But then I yelled, “Stop.”

I scooped more melon balls, cut more basil, crumbled more cheese and moved the melon from a plate to a bowl. Voila — it was exactly the captivating image I wanted.

So as to my Instagram following, I haven’t quite reached Kardashian levels (both in the size of my followers or derrière.)

And I haven’t received a call from the Food Network with an offer to host my own cooking show. As of press time, I only have a measly 750 followers. But I’ve learned more about the creative process and now I always have something to do on rainy Sunday afternoons. Dinner anyone?

Pompano Picks Starting April 10 Free 8-Week Culinary Business Workshop

Pompano Beach’s CRA has created a Culinary Incubator Program at the E. Pat Larkins Community Center. The incubator program will hopefully blossom into an active community kitchen and culinary center. The CRA envisions the center becoming an economic engine for the community, providing burgeoning culinary entrepreneurs with guidance, support and a kitchen to help grow their businesses.

The facility will also operate as a commercial kitchen where food trucks, caterers and other food service providers, from any city, can rent the space to prepare food and receive the technical assistance needed to establish and grow their businesses. In addition, the space will host cooking classes by local chefs and free programs to introduce local youth to culinary careers.

The Incubator Program has started a series of eight workshops. The next workshop will take place on April 10 and is free for all Pompano Beach residents.

New Museum Honors Legendary Educator Blanche Ely After undergoing almost a year’s worth of renovations, the former home of the late Blanche Ely, one of the city’s most prominent educational and civic pioneers, opened its doors as a museum last month.

The one-story, three-bedroom house at 595 NW 15th St. is about two blocks north of Blanche Ely High School, where Ely served as principal for nearly 20 years, beginning in 1951.

“The City of Pompano Beach is honored to share the legacy of Blanche Ely and to open the doors for the public to enjoy this important historical resource,” said City Manager Greg Harrison.

Ely fought to bring quality education to Pompano’s African-American youth at a time when schools were segregated.

“She called us ‘her children,’” said Katheryn Gillis, a 1953 graduate of Blanche Ely High School. “What she wanted most was to know her children were going to be successful.”

Gillis is president of the Blanche Ely Educational Museum Committee, which she formed in 2013. The

committee, which is made up of six of Ely’s former students, spearheaded the effort to turn Ely’s house into a museum.

The inaugural exhibition of the Blanche Ely Museum celebrates Ely’s professional and personal accomplishments, as well as those of her husband, Joseph, who was also an influential educator in Broward County.

Designed to offer an abbreviated glimpse into the couple’s extensive collection of photographs, letters and artifacts, the exhibition, developed by curatorial consultant Derek Davis of Davis Kuumba Arts, will serve as the foundation for the venue’s future programming, which will include tours to individuals and small groups, lectures, arts education

workshops, community engagement activities and events that delve deeper into the collection’s contents.

Future exhibitions will have themes based on information found in the home’s archives, including educational excellence, college readiness, sports, health, faith, self-esteem, motivation, business development, civic involvement, community development and art. Exhibits will also promote current accomplishments of Blanche Ely High School and developing projects in the northwest section of Pompano Beach.

The home’s archives include over 500 photographs, historic correspondences, scholarly evaluations of Blanche Ely High School’s academic program, and other historic materials. The library includes more than 600 books and publications.

The rooms contain beds, sofas, lamps and other furnishings that were in the home when Ely and her husband lived there. Throughout the house, different scenes have been created to illustrate different aspects of their lives.

The exhibition space for permanent and temporary exhibits is in what used to be the main living room area.

Renovation of the approximately 2,300-squarefoot home cost $450,000, with about $66,000 in small matching grants coming from the Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources. The improvements included making the house accessible to people with disabilities and adding parking, which was required for it to open to the public. In addition, landscaping, zoning, and drainage requirements were met in order to upgrade the site to a park with a historic home. A new concrete deck in back of the house will serve as a gathering space for visitors.

The house, which is on the Local Register of Historic Places, was purchased by the City of Pompano Beach in 1997 for $85,000 from the estate of Blanche Ely. It was built in the early 1960s by Ely and her husband. Ely lived there until her death in 1993 at the age of 89.

In 2000, the house opened as a museum operated by a nonprofit foundation, but after about seven years it closed.

As the house didn’t meet the city’s building codes as a place of assembly, there were no plans to reopen it until the renovations took place.

A New Restaurant Is Coming To Old Town

A new restaurant that will offer Southern comfort food in a sleek rustic setting is being planned for Pompano’s historic downtown. The restaurant, tentatively named Wood & Wire, will occupy the building at 165 NE First Avenue, which is currently empty. The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board approved a sublease for the new restaurant last October.

Mike Linder and Mitch Amsterdam are the business duo behind the restaurant. They are the owners of Silver Lining Inflight Catering, which provides upscale catering services for private jets at airports throughout the southern half of Florida. The main kitchen for Silver Lining is located in Pompano Beach on Blount Road. Linder and Amsterdam also own Jet Runway Café, a popular breakfast and lunch restaurant located on the tarmac at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

Their restaurant in Old Town will have an outdoor dining area overlooking a new public plaza that the Pompano Beach CRA is in the process of creating as part of its effort to redevelop Old Town as an arts and entertainment destination.

The central feature of the plaza is a large existing fig tree.

The restaurant’s “soul warming” menu will feature appetizers such as fried green tomatoes, corn hoecakes, hushpuppies, and buttermilk biscuits with Southern ham. Entrées will include chicken fried steak, blackened redfish (made famous in Louisiana by chef Paul Prudhomme), shrimp and grits, gumbo and broiled catfish. Desserts will include pecan pie, chess pie (made with a custardlike filling) and hummingbird cake (a banana-pineapple spice cake). An indoor/ outdoor bar will serve craft cocktails.

The interior design will be entrusted to Fort Lauderdale-based Pam Manhas, who has done numerous projects in South Florida, including the interior of Yakuza restaurant on East Atlantic Boulevard. The idea is to create a welcoming space inspired by rustic industrial design, said Linder, who grew up in Pompano Beach. Locally sourced woods such as Dade pine and Florida cypress will be combined with metal elements, including custom light fixtures and reclaimed steel.

Renovation of the 3,600-square-foot restaurant space will be substantial, including an entire interior build-out, new facades, and parapets to screen new mechanical equipment. Construction documents for the project are anticipated to be completed this month. The next step will be to submit an application to the City for building permits.

In addition to working on Wood & Wire, Linder and Amsterdam are getting ready to open, possibly next month, a waterfront seafood restaurant, called YOT, at the Lauderdale Marine Center.

Ely fought to change the dual school system, which prevented African-American students from returning to school after the Christmas holidays so they could pick bean and pepper crops in local fields.

Many of her students and their families lived in quarters that were owned by the farmers.

“The lessons she imparted in her students were long-lasting,” said Gillis.

“She would always tell us that the sky’s the limit, and that we could be whatever we wanted to be, despite the limitations we had as far as school time and school materials.”

The Pompano Beach Colored School was later renamed Blanche Ely High School, and transferred to the site of the existing high school, while Ely was still principal. Ely led a successful fight to add a 12th grade to the school, so students could graduate with a 12th-grade diploma instead of an 11th-grade diploma.

In 1970, when a federal desegregation order closed the high school, Ely retired.

She and other community leaders instituted a lawsuit against the closing, and the school was reopened in 1974.

Today, it is a medical sciences and preengineering magnet school with about 2,100 students.

The new museum becomes the fifth cultural venue under the direction of the City’s new Cultural Affairs Department, which launched last October. The other venues are the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA), Historic Ali Cultural Arts, and the Pompano Beach Amphitheater.

The current exhibition at the Blanche Ely Museum will run through the end of September 2019. The museum will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Group tours are by appointment only and can be scheduled by phone (954-786-7877). At this time, there is no fee to visit the museum, but there may be moderate fees to participate in certain future programs presented at the venue.

More Public Art Projects Are In Store For Pompano Beach

At its meeting on Feb. 26, the City Commission approved the 2019 Annual Public Art Plan, which includes 11 public art projects that are planned for the current fiscal year.

The Public Art Committee, which was created in 2012, is required to submit an annual report to the City Commission at the end of the 12-month term, providing current public art program accomplishments, the status of public art projects in progress, information on future projects and an updated inventory of public art in the city.

Before the Commission voted to approve and accept the annual public art plan, Mayor Rex Hardin said the Public Art Committee is “doing a great job for our city.”

“We get compliments from people who represent other cities,” he said. “Thank you for what you guys are doing to make our city a better-looking place.”

A total of $428,960 has been allocated for the following projects to be carried out this fiscal year.

• A large-scale outdoor sculpture with a water feature is being planned for Community Park ($150,000).

• The City has already wrapped 91 utility boxes on major roads and in several neighborhoods as part of a beautification effort. In the third round of the utility box wrap program, the remaining 24 utility boxes in the city will be wrapped with artist-designed adhesive vinyl ($4,600).

• A prefabricated sculpture will be selected and placed at the south entrance of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center and Library ($25,000).

• A community engagement project will create a mural crosswalk on SE First Avenue, from the Pompano Beach Cultural Center to City Hall. The selected artist, or artists, will work with volunteers to paint the crosswalk ($15,000).

• A mural will be installed on the Blanche Ely High School campus to honor Melvin Randall, the legendary boys’ basketball coach who last month led the Blanche Ely Tigers to their seventh state title and was recently inducted into the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame ($4,000).

• One large mosaic or multiple mosaics will be created and placed near the beach along A1A ($50,000). This project will be developed by The Mosaic Team, a group of five apprentices led by experienced mosaic artist Sonata Kazimieraitiene. The Mosaic Team was selected by the City in 2017 to carry out four mosaic projects.

Kazimieraitiene’s two-year contract was recently extended for an additional year in order to complete the beach mosaic project.

• A free-standing sculpture will be commissioned for placement on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, between I-95 and Dixie Highway, on a median or landscape area in front of a building ($30,000).

• Two murals will be commissioned by two separate artists and installed in ‘Artists Alley,’ located behind Bailey Contemporary Arts ($7,000).

• An artwork will be installed in Collier City, possibly a mural or sculpture at McNair Park ($15,000).

• A free-standing sculpture with exterior lighting will be commissioned for installation on Powerline Road, south of Atlantic Boulevard ($50,000).

Department of Motor Vehicles Has a New Location in Pompano Citi Centre The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) now has an office at Pompano Citi Centre in Pompano Beach. Services offered at the new location, which opened in January, include driver licenses, ID cards, reinstatements and written and skills exams.

The office, located at 1955 N. Federal Highway, Suite J209, on the second floor, can be accessed most directly from the parking area south or west of JC Penney. The elevator next to the staircase on the west side of JC Penney goes up to the second floor and exits within close proximity of the office entrance.

After the DHSMV office in Deerfield Beach closed about a year ago, the next closest office for Pompano Beach residents was in Margate, where having to wait in line for three hours, mostly outside under the sun, is a common occurrence. It is possible to schedule appointments at the new Pompano Beach location online (www.flhsmv.gov) or by phone (954497-1570). The office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8am5pm, and Wednesday, 8:30am-5pm.

Pompano Seafood Festival: To Beach or Not To Beach

“A HONKY-TONK, BEER-SWILLING FESTIVAL.” THAT’S HOW POMPANO BEACH RESIDENT LOU STERN DESCRIBED THE POMPANO BEACH SEAFOOD FESTIVAL TO THE SUN-SENTINEL...BACK IN 1996.

Way back in 1988, uptight snowbird Bill Hennes, of the Jamaica House condo proclaimed “The beach is for people to have a picnic or be with their families, not for people to have a festival.” In the same article, Don Wich, then organizer of the festival said moving it off the beach “...would kill the festival.”

Hennes went to a quieter place in 1992. Yet the raging discussion as to where to locate the famous event continues. As you may have heard, this year’s celebration will be held April 26-28 at the Community Park/Pompano Beach Amphitheatre area off of Federal Highway, over a mile from the beach.

Debates about where to locate the party are nothing new. The festival started in May 1985 as a two day offshoot of the long established Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo. It was a relatively low key affair that year, located

on East Atlantic Blvd. leading up to (but not technically on) the beach. The event quickly grew. By 1989, the festival had expanded to include concerts on the beach.

In 1990 and 1991 it became a three day event and separated from the Fishing Rodeo by moving to its now traditional weekend in the end of April. By 1994, national recording acts (the Lovin’ Spoonful) were a part of the festivities.

Over the years musical headliners have included: The Drifters, Grass Roots, The Rascals, Sam (without Dave), the Starship, Little Anthony, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Turtles, Badfinger, Steppenwolf, Eddie Money, Gin Blossoms. Grand Funk, America, Loverboy, and .38 Special. Many groups have played the beach stage two and even three times, including this year’s top bill, Guess Who (the band, not a misplaced trivia question). Many have said they found it to be one of the most fun performances of their tour because of the crowd and the locale.

as high as 200,000 attendees, which of course is not really possible. More realistically, the three-day party has attracted around 30,000 people, give or take, from early on, up until today. The debates of the value of the celebration versus the inconvenience it causes beachfront neighbors has been an ongoing battle since the beginning. (For the record, I live right by the location.

I am totally inconvenienced each year, but wouldn’t have it any other way).

Now, supposedly due to construction of the fishing pier and Oceanic restaurant, the event HAD to be moved.

Jeff Steinberg, spokesman for the event promoter stated on Facebook that the move was “beyond our control” and vowed they plan to bring it back to the beach next year. Comments on the Facebook page have been mostly negative and included many sad face emojis.

Mayor Rex Hardin also confirms the intention to return the fun to the beach in 2020. He told me, “ I am hopeful that we can get the festival back to the beach area, it’s historic home, for next year and in the future.”

Let’s hope that happens.

The new location is fine. It’s a very nice park and a terrific home for concerts. But it is not the beach. As one Facebook poster said, if it’s not on the beach, “It might as well be in Margate.”

Hardin also added, “ The Seafood Festival is not just a great party, it is a great community event that has brought in tens of thousands of dollars for many of our local charities.” An important point to keep in mind.

Before there were million dollar condos, fancy restaurants or four-star hotels in Pompano Beach, there was The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival. It is one of the longest lasting and most popular events in our city.

It may not be P. Diddy’s White Party in the Hamptons but it has its own special charm. Yeah, some people probably drink too much and the crowd is not made up of the Fort Lauderdale yacht set but it is a whole lot of fun. People get a little crazy, but not too crazy, and it is one of the things that has always made Pompano Beach special, even when there wasn’t much else going on here. It would be a shame if, in an effort to “upscale” the city, this unique event somehow gets phased out because the “New Pompano Beach” doesn’t find it to be a worthwhile and desirable event anymore.

Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that our town still has a place for the “honky-tonk beer swilling festival” the late Mr. Hennes complained about decades ago. Y

It Dawned on Me

April Showers Might Bring May Flowers – and Butterflies?

“WHY DON’T WE PLANT BUTTERFLY-ATTRACTING PLANTS, MOM?” MY SON ASKED. “ALL WE SEEM TO ATTRACT ARE LIZARDS.” He’s right. We see butterflies everywhere, but our yard is only awash in lizards.

In yet another triumph of hope over experience, I did what “smart” people do – went online to discover the best butterfly plants for our zone.

And that’s when the trouble began. If memory serves (and it may not), last time I checked, there were nine zones, just like there were nine planets. Ahh, simpler times! There are now ten zones – no, that’s incorrect, because there’s 10a and a 10b. So now there

are 11. Why is this? Did someone need to justify their job?

“We really only need nine people, one for each zone.”

“Ha! I’ve just discovered TWO NEW ZONES.” Apparently, “the last time I checked” was when Clinton was president. Or maybe Nixon, based on this: Your zone is:

10b (According to the new 2012 map) 10 (According to the older 1990 map) I got over myself (sort of) and set out to find “butterflyattracting plants in my zone.” The closest I got was “butterfly plants for Florida gardeners.” Ninety five percent of the plants recommended are in zones from Orlando north.

Of the remaining 5 percent, approximately two are available in Broward, based on my hours-long search. In the time I spent online, I could probably have bred my own butterflies (is that a thing? It should be).

I went to a local (read: not big box) nursery and came home armed with seven (!) plants, two of which are butterfly attractors.

But the rest are so pretty! My haul included a rosebush (which does not attract butterflies, but certainly attracted spider mites within days of my purchase) and delphinium. Delphinium is not a butterfly attractor, but I’ve found those deep blue flowers mournfully romantic since I was 10 years old. I’m not sure why; it’s possible they starred in a Nancy Drew novel.

The two butterfly attractors starring in my Theater of the Absurd: Backyard Edition are dill (edible too!) and dahlias (not on any internet list, but the label said “Attracts Butterflies!”, so who am I to argue?). I really wanted milkweed, the apparent star of butterfly land, but couldn’t find any. And no, I most certainly did not bring home that invasive lantana (and you can’t prove that I did), a known butterfly attractor.

I’d hoped for the more exotic-sounding plants: coral honeysuckle (honeysuckle! Imagine having that smell in a real plant and not a candle), passion flower, pawpaw and saltbush.

Alas, none were available here. Well, one or two might have been, at an odd-sounding nursery in the hinterlands of Palm Beach County (“we’re open to the public on Saturdays for 15 minutes in months ending in “y”).

So far, no butterflies. Oddly, I seem to have scared away the lizards, but we’ve now got an alarming snail population.

Does beer still work to get rid of them? Like it did in the Nixon administration? Y

Celebrates Its 5TH Anniversary

This month Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) will celebrate its fifth year anniversary since opening its doors on April 16, 2014. The once abandoned, dilapidated Bailey Hotel building was transformed to become an important cultural catalyst for re-inventing Pompano Beach’s Old Town. If you haven’t been to BaCA, then you are genuinely missing out on one of our city’s most brilliant gems. Its beautiful galleries, community gathering spaces, coffee shop and working resident art studios are downtown’s keystone.

On one side of the first floor, Bailey Arts has a beautiful, contemporary art gallery with sleek white walls perpetually lined with thought-provoking, colorful, texturallyinteresting works built around a socially-meaningful theme (with new exhibits every few months). On the other side of the first floor, you will find Blooming Bean Coffee Roasters — a hip, artsy and inviting coffee shop — the kind you could sit in for hours, with sunny light seeping in the front glass windows, stunning art on every wall, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee hanging in the air, the sound of chill, indie-acoustic music playing overhead, comfortable seating for small groups or solo patrons, plus an always-inviting barista/owner (Sharon Stephenson) who roasts the coffee herself and seems to know just about every customer by first name.

On the second floor, there are 11 working studio spaces for Bailey’s resident artists — a wide range of local creatives ranging from collagists, to photographers, potters, painters and sculptors. Patrons can venture upstairs to peruse, glancing through the doorways of each studio to admire the lifestyles of working artists — half-created canvases set up

on easels, cups of paint brushes bathed in turpentine, tables laid out with materials, such as clay, tiles, wax and paint, and finished works displayed on the walls. There is an air of palpable inspiration — a certain artistic buzz you can feel — the energy of art being made.

In the center of those studios are some lounge spaces and gathering places perfect for an intimate brainstorming meeting or a quiet place to work.

The entire Bailey building maintains a sense of its history. Areas of exposed brick, old wood details, a restored skylight and some exposed beams are remnants of the building’s previous life as the Bailey Hotel, which was the bustling center of Pompano Beach’s downtown in the 1920s and 30s.

Built in 1923, the Bailey building is the second oldest remaining building (second to the old Farmer’s Bank building next door), and is part of the longest contiguous collection of historic buildings in Broward County. With the rapid suburban development of Pompano Beach beginning in the 1950s and 60s, the city’s once vibrant downtown was primarily abandoned. The Bailey building sat vacant for years, growing more and more ramshackle as time went on. By the early 2000s, the Bailey building was little more than a shell — home to pigeons and squirrels.

In 2012, the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) purchased the building for $1 million. In August 2012, a business plan was issued for Bailey Arts Center, and in 2014 the CRA completed over $1.2 million in renovations to the building.

Jody Leshinsky, Cultural Venues Programming Manager for the City of Pompano Beach’s Cultural Affairs Department remembers touring the building back in 2012 before any renovations were made.

“It had the yellow tape around it, and the walls didn’t exist,” she remembers. “The floors were not here, there was a hole between the first and second floors. There was a hole in the ceiling. It was nothing. And they said that it is going to be a contemporary arts

building. They said people are going to come here to this area in force.”

The image was hard to picture, but Leshinsky said she believed in the City’s vision and still does. In her decades-long career in the art world, she has seen arts and culture used to revitalize dilapidated areas all around the globe. Art and culture is known for its powerful transformative ability — it is credited with helping reinvent neighborhoods like Wynwood in Miami, Bushwick in New York and Dorchester near Boston, among many others.

The City of Pompano Beach noted the importance of the arts for catalyzing redevelopment when it included a cultural affairs department in its master plan to revitalize the city, and focused some of its early redevelopment efforts on creating cultural venues, including BaCA, Ali Arts (across Dixie Highway from BaCA) and Pompano Beach’s new cultural arts center on Atlantic Boulevard.

In celebration of its fifth anniversary, BaCA will be launching into Spring and Summer with a packed schedule of programming, starting with an exhibit called “Penta,” which means five. The exhibit will feature works by past and presnt BaCA Artists in Residence. The opening reception of “Penta” will be during Old Town Untapped on April 5 from 6 to 9pm. Other events this Spring and Summer include numerous fine arts exhibits, a film series, craft workshops, open-mic nights and live music [see sidebar].

goal to unify Pompano Beach’s cultural venues, pushing them to operate more holistically and in synergy with one another. In the past, Leshinsky said, Pompano Beach’s cultural venues operated in independent silos.

“Every venue was doing a really good job with what they did, but the public was kind of confused as to who was doing what,” she said.

“Now we are under one umbrella. And that umbrella is called the Pompano Beach cultural affairs department.”

The cultural affairs department, which became an independent department, de-grouped from the parks and recreation department on Oct. 1, 2018, is led by cultural affairs director Phyllis Korab (Pompano Beach’s former assistant city manager), programmed

by Leshinsky and curated by Juliana Forero, an independent contractor who has agreed to curate Pompano Beach’s cultural venues for 2019.

the community at large. Art, she said, has the power to spur conversation and create connection. She saw this firsthand when she was working on her doctoral dissertation, which researched the role of the artistic community in the revitalization of the South Bronx.

“Whatever those invisible lines are, art connects people to each other, and to the issues, and to beauty,” she said.

Forero has planned robust schedule of art exhibits and is also working on integrating art education curriculums for both children and adults. Many people, she acknowledged, don’t know how to look at art. She hopes to teach the community how to get the most out of what they are experiencing, from the medium and the message. Her advice: “Don’t be intimidated, just go inside the gallery,” she said. “If something doesn’t talk to you, don’t spend time at it. Look for pieces

Forero said a good analogy for the cultural affairs department’s venue unification goal is to think of the City’s cultural venues as one giant art museum with different floors, each hosting related events and exhibits that strengthen the whole. For example, Bailey arts may host a fine arts exhibit surrounding a theme, while Ali may host a film on the same theme, and the cultural center a panel discussion.

“We have one venue with three addresses,” Forero said.

By creating synergy between the different arts and cultural venues, Forero said she hopes the cohesion will bleed into

Together, Forero and Leshinsky, under the leadership of Korab, hope BaCA and all of Pompano Beach’s cultural venues can encourage community engagement with the arts.

“My vision is to make sure we have people who have never been to our venues come and explore, and be entertained, and just be excited about what they see,” said Leshinsky. “We want our residents to learn about the arts, and if they already know about the arts, maybe challenge them a little bit and take them out of their comfort zone.” Y

They have a full menu with salads, sandwiches and entrees. Also, it’s a great place to grab a cappuccino.

On any given day, look around and you’ll see fellow diners devouring their house special cutter (sandwich)—sautéed shrimp with garlic butter, mushrooms and cheddar all stuffed into a hollowed out kaiser roll. This small but impressive Italian eatery is delightful. We can’t really tell you what to try because the menu changes daily. However, we are willing to bet you will fall in love with this place which feels like it just plopped into Pompano straight from the hills of Tuscany. Reservations are highly recommended. The restaurant’s exposed wood framing is reminiscent of the German half-timbered architectural style and the walls are lined with classic German beer steins. For a traditional German meal, try the wienerschnitzel — it’s divine a lightly breaded veal cutlet sautéed in lemon butter and topped with homemade brown

gravy. The spaetzle (German noodles) are a real homemade treat and not to be missed — throw a little of that brown gravy on them and they could be a meal unto themselves.

The red cabbage is both classically sweet and sour and there are other side options too including potato dumplings, potato salad and even hot potato salad. As you look around, you can’t help but get the feeling that most of the patrons are returning customers. And the next time we get a hankering for some schnitzel, we know where to go. Mrs. Kossenfloffer’s Lemon Loaf

Somehow or other eating a piece of pound cake for breakfast seems perfectly acceptable; whereas a straight up cake seems like quite an indulgence. Enter the lemon loaf — fancy enough to serve as dessert, yet acceptable for breakfast

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt 1 1/3 cups sugar, divided 3 extra-large eggs

PREPARATION

2 teaspoons grated lemon zest (2 lemons) 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

Preheat oven to350 degrees. Grease a loaf pan and line it with parchment paper.

In a medium sized bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, whisk together the yogurt 1 cup of the sugar, the eggs, zest and vanilla.

Add the dry ingredient to the wet and whisk to combine.

Using a rubber spatula fold the vegetable oil into the batter.

Pour into prepared pan and bake for 50 minutes. (test, I had to cook mine for another 10 minutes) Remove from pan to cool on a rack. Melt the remaining 1/3 cup of sugar with the 1/3 cup of lemon juice and pour over the cake as it is cooling.

Opening Reception is April 5 from 6 - 10pm | Exhibition on display in BaCA’s west gallery through May 31 | BaCA Hours: Tuesday through Friday 10am-6pm, Saturdays 10am - 4pm “Tamiami Trail: In the Beginning” is an exhibition of original artworks by members of the Miami-based Tropical Botanic Artists collective selected to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of work on Tamiami Trail, a roadway begun in 1915 in Miami. Today it stretches across the Everglades from Miami to Naples and northward to Tampa. The exhibition’s more than 30 plant portraits depict species found then and now in multiple vegetation zones. Due to human intervention and changes in water flow, some of the plants illustrated are rare or endangered.
