I

should just be honest: I have the best job at the entire university of applied sciences.

I don’t have to deal with any complaints at all. The people who contact me are passionate, enthusiastic, have ideas of their own and are looking for a way to realise those ideas. You can’t imagine the kind of wild ideas that get pitched to us. And luckily, a great deal is possible here at The Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse has already been around for five (!) years. Sometimes we think we can sit back and rest on our Lighthouse-laurels. But nothing is less true. We must actively continue to pursue our connection to the core business of this university of applied sciences. And we have to make sure that The Lighthouse is well-known, also among new students, and that they feel particularly welcome to organise something with us or to take part in our events.

With our programme we need to remain relevant, topical and exciting. To put topics on the agenda on which we can have a lively debate or tell an inspiring story about. Or to organise a crazy activity on the Atrium, which slightly surprises the passer-by.

We’re riding a bit of a wave, of course, with global citizenship being a top priority for our students. But still, there’s a lot of hard work involved. On the other hand: when you have the best job at the university, hard work isn’t so bad.

A centre for debate and culture The Lighthouse organises a wide range of activities including talks, inspiring stories, discussions and debates, workshops, exhibitions, films and performances. We offer surprising events that provide us with food for thought in connection with social issues, the world and our future.

This naturally aligns quite well with the global citizenship we at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) feel is so important to instil in our students. That means looking beyond your own borders, meeting people from different backgrounds, taking part in the discussion of complex issues and learning from one another.

The Lighthouse likes to organise these activities in partnership with students, lecturers and researchers. We also put on events in cooperation with external parties. These activities can focus on just about anything: politics, innovation, sustainability, art and culture…

The events organised at The Lighthouse mostly take place on or around the central square of the building on Johanna Westerdijkplein. At this square you will find the Aula, the Speakers’ Corner, the Innovation Playground and the Café. All events offer free admission to staff and students.

INTERVIEW Since the start of The Lighthouse, a man in a white suit has regularly been sitting on a high chair in the Atrium. Who is he and what is he doing there? Well, this is Oscar Prinsen with

his ‘Gesprekkerette’. You can settle down beside him for a good conversation or a patient listening ear. Finally a moment to ask about the ideas that drive him.

Oscar, why do you feel so strongly about the power of a good conversation?

▶ For me, the dialogue that takes place between people is the only thing that matters. In our current era of individualism it is the peak experience. More and more, we’re shedding the traditional values and standards that used to be provided for example by religion. We are becoming increasingly alienated from ourselves and are looking for something new to hold on to.

This is why I established the Institute for the Wandering Man. Those discussions are one of the things I offer. We all have questions such as: who am I; where am I; what do I want; where should I be headed in life?

And these questions are addressed in the discussions?

▶ Oh yes. What I do is offer an unconditioned space by literally climbing on the high chair and stepping out of the daily hustle and race against time. I create distance between myself and the place where everything is ‘as it should be’. Often, I’ll say to my conversation partner in the chair: look down for a moment. Everyone is coming in, heading to class or taking a break – that is the system.

Step out of it for a moment and reflect on all of that, and on yourself. When you open yourself up and concentrate on the other person, and they place their trust in you

as well, you’ve made genuine contact; that’s really the most wonderful thing in the world.

It’s so important to be seen, even just for a moment.

What is your background?

▶ I spent three months at an academy of fine arts. But that didn’t work for me. To me, it was a school that trained people to be artists as if they were training bricklayers.

It wasn’t the goal I had in mind. I see it differently: a person is an artist, they don’t become one. In addition, I immersed myself into philosophy and society. I think of myself as a socially engaged artist with a philosophical slant.

Did you design the installation, the Gesprekkerette, yourself?

to talk about what’s on their minds, whether that’s a problem or a feeling they’re having.

Or they can reflect for a moment on where they are at, what they’re doing, where they’ve come from and where they’d like to go. There are so many different topics, but more importantly, there are so very many personal quests. For me, one highlight was when a student came back three years after our contact and told me how much he enjoyed our talks and how well he was doing now. That he was finally in a relationship and that his girlfriend makes him very happy.

How can we get students who might be willing, but are still hesitant, to climb up in that chair?

▶ That’s something people have to figure out for themselves. People are curious about what goes on atop the chairs on the square; they talk about it amongst themselves.

I also have students come to me and say: ‘I’ve seen you sitting here for two years and thought it was time to just do it’. It simply took a bit of time. But there’s no law saying you have to come sit with me specifically.

People can have this type of conversation with each other, too!

▶ Yes, that’s right. I started out as a draughtsman and painter. Pretty soon, however, I began constructing installations.

I had always been interested in the ‘purpose’ of art; why is art important? And to that end, I felt painting was too flat, too twodimensional. Through the installations, I’m looking for new forms of connection.

Connection to our own identities, the people around us and the environment in which we live. The objects facilitate this search.

What aspect of the discussions at THUAS do you find positive or noteworthy?

▶ It is extremely positive that The Lighthouse offers students the opportunity

Whenever elections are imminent – whether at a local, provincial, national or European level – various sessions, pop-up events and other activities are held to help students and staff members make a well-informed choice in the voting booth. These activities include debates, interactive sessions, College Tours and theatrical performances. The Lighthouse cooperates closely with study associations, research groups, study programmes and external partners and hopes to encourage everyone to get out and vote!

POLITICS

W

hen The Lighthouse was looking for a student to lead the discussion during the College Tour with the alderman for Education in The Hague, Saskia Bruines, it didn’t take long for inquiries to come my way. I’m used to that, being one of those students that tends to seek out the spotlight. From the very start of my Public Administration programme, I’ve been taking on ancillary activities to zhuzh up the good old CV. I became a board member for HSV Trinitas, for instance, and got to know the staff of The Lighthouse through those activities.

COLUMN

After mulling it over for a week, I decided to take on the challenge. If so many people believed I could do it, this was an opportunity that I should seize with both hands. Although I had prior debate experience, leading a discussion and taking questions from the audience is something quite different. I decided to read up on Ms Bruines.

The College Tour had been scheduled a short time before the municipal council elections, so I wanted to be well-prepared! With tips from The Lighthouse, I started my preparations; by the end, I knew almost everything about Saskia Bruines’ life and work.

When the day of the College Tour arrived, I was extremely nervous. Little things suddenly became crucial. Like: what should I wear? Normally, I’m most comfortable in sneakers and jeans. Would that be appropriate? “Yes, of course!” was the answer.

“Don’t think about it, Sanne, just do it”, I thought to myself as Saskia Bruines came down the stairs of the Speakers’ Corner and shook my hand. And that’s exactly what I did! I opened the meeting, asked questions and listened, all the while formulating the next question in my head. And if the audience and the staff of The Lighthouse are to be believed, I did a good job of it, too! But above all, I really enjoyed it.

And that’s what is most important: to find enjoyment in opportunities rather than being afraid of them.

New things may seem scary, but if you give them a try, you’ll see it’s all no big deal!

Jordi Jansen

KOIOS is an experimental research and development project initiated by the research group New Finance of the Business, Finance & Marketing (BFM) faculty at The Hague University (THUAS). Its aim is to experiment with and to build a blockchain-based open education infrastructure to enable new ways of (free) education, knowledge sharing, knowledge development and accreditation.

M

ention the word ‘blockchain’ or ‘KOIOS’ at THUAS and the name Jordi Jansen will pop up immediately. In only a short time, Jordi has organised a number of events in connection with Blockchain Technology. He’s one of our favourite visitors at The Lighthouse office.

That is when he has got time: the one thing in short supply in his life. He is a very busy man and, in his boundless enthusiasm, tends to say ‘yes’ to things – which means that, in addition to his teaching activities, he takes part in all kinds of advisory groups and sessions outside THUAS. Even in a Ghanaian TV studio, in fact...

His lectures, events and sessions are a hit and myriad requests for education and advice are rolling in. Jordi finds himself riding a bubble, along with motivated and inquisitive students, lecturers, traders, professionals, politicians, journalists and researchers.

When we asked him to write a half-page column, he responded with whole-hearted enthusiasm: “Of course! It’s a way for me to do something for you for a change!” But it turned out to be rather complicated in light of his jam-packed schedule. So we suggested a phone interview during a rare empty spot in his diary. That spot, however, turned out to be a train ride to The Hague Central Station and then the walk from the station to the House of Representatives, where he had been invited to attend a House committee meeting.

The conversation went in fits and starts: the connection was poor in the train and Jordi, having taken a seat in a silent car, wasn’t in a position to speak loudly. After that, when he called back, he cheerfully mentioned needing to look both ways when crossing a busy street. In short: while we didn’t manage to get an in-depth interview with this dynamic individual, we did gain a good impression of his activities and dedication.

Dutch Insights An introduction to the Netherlands

No, people don’t walk around in clogs here. And yes, there is a

lot of seeking consensus here,

always looking for a compromise

('polderen'). What kind of country have I ended up in? All the way from China, Brazil or Latvia.

We offer all our international students an programme called Dutch Insights. Through Dutch Insights, we want to familiarise them with various aspects of the Netherlands. The programme consists of lectures and workshops on topics such as Dutch politics, water management, the monarchy, art, diversity, history, architecture and so on. Sometimes in the form of an interactive presentation or a workshop and sometimes an outing. These activities are open to other students and staff members as well. Students who take part in all substantive activities will receive a certificate and an extra-curricular credit. The Lighthouse organises this programme in cooperation with Team Global Citizenship and Team Campus.

While there were many special moments, for me, the highlight was the Dutch MasterChef workshop led by colleagues and students from the Nutrition and Dietetics degree programme. The students worked in groups to prepare creative dishes using typically Dutch ingredients and then presented the results to the jury as a tasty surprise. Another particularly memorable session was the Sinterklaas lecture – which obviously wouldn’t have been complete without the obligatory Zwarte Piet debate.

The programme concluded with a Pub Quiz in the Café, giving students a chance to test out their newly acquired knowledge.

De opleiding Industrieel Productontwerpen is binnen het European Project Semester (EPS) de uitdaging aangegaan met een grote groep (12) partners samen te werken; twee hogescholen, drie universiteiten, drie onderzoeksinstituten en drie bedrijven. Deze EPS is als case study gebruikt om te ontdekken hoe zo’n samenwerking tot voordelen voor de betrokken studenten kan leiden; onze bevindingen worden gedeeld!

Actie-onderzoek van het stadslab Laak Vitaal; Waardigheid en armoede: hulpverleners schieten tekort In het Haagse Laak is door het stadslab Laak Vitaal onderzocht hoe arme mensen hun situatie ervaren.

Wat blijkt? Arme mensen lijden vooral onder de aantasting van hun waardigheid. Ook hulpverleners dragen daaraan bij. Gezien de kernwaarden van de hulpverlening waarin waardigheid een centrale plaats inneemt, is dit hoogst kwalijk te nemen. Waarom faalt het armoedebeleid en de hulpverlening daarbinnen?

In deze onderzoekslunch gaan we hierop in.

We hechten veel waarde aan directe betrokkenheid van gebruikers bij zorg en gezondheid innovaties. Echter zien we dat organisaties en onderzoekers hiermee worstelen: er is zelden sprake van betekenisvolle participatie. Sam en Meralda – beiden werkzaam bij de opleiding Verpleegkunde en het lectoraat Technologie voor Gezondheid – vertellen hoe een participatieve omgeving gecreëerd kan worden, zodat er betekenisvolle participatie ontstaat.

Levensgeluk, werkgeluk, persoonlijk geluk, we zoeken met zijn allen wat af. Meestal zoek je naar iets als je het bent kwijtgeraakt, maar zijn we het wel kwijtgeraakt? Soms liggen de dingen gewoon voor je neus. Zijn er naast onze Westerse opvattingen over geluk ook andere opvattingen te plaatsen?

Kunnen we op dit gebied iets leren van Oosters denken?

De integratie van onderzoek-onderwijs-beroepspraktijk is een belangrijk speerpunt in het hbo-onderwijs. Het lectoraat Oncologische Zorg slaagt hier steeds beter in. Het project Ziekenhuiskamer van de Toekomst met een Living Lab (HMC Antoniushove) en University Lab (De Haagse Hogeschool) is hiervan een mooi voorbeeld.

Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer hoort tot de best gelezen Nederlandse auteurs.

Naast zijn bekroonde romans La superba en Grand Hotel Europa, schreef hij essays, gedichten, romans en toneelstukken. Ook was hij presentator van de televisieserie Via Genua. Joost Boogaard, student European Studies, zal Ilja interviewen.

hap·pi·n The Lighthouse is organising a series entitled The Science of Happiness. This programme approaches the theme of ‘happiness’ from various angles and perspectives and offers practical tools to apply in your own life. It explores happiness through the lenses of philosophy, psychology and economics. And considers questions such as: how can a building, nature, exercise and sports impact your happiness? All these things are addressed. In creating this programme, The Lighthouse has put together a working group. We spoke to two members of the working group about the theme of happiness.

What does happiness mean to you?

▶ “For me, happiness is not the ultimate goal. My perspective on this has changed quite drastically in the past year. In my case, it’s more of a continuous process in which I take conscious decisions, am able to contribute and experience a connection to other people. The choices I make, in turn, give me a sense of satisfaction and purpose and contribute to my overall enjoyment of life.”

Is happiness a choice?

▶ “Studies have shown that happiness is determined in part by our genes (40 to 50%). This means that to a large extent, our experience of happiness is subject to influence from ourselves and factors in our environment, and will vary from one individual to another. Therefore, being happy in your life or in your work is indeed a choice! Making the right choices and being pro-active in the search for what makes you happy will ultimately contribute to a happier life overall.”

Is it possible to make other people happy?

Beautiful trips, yoga, snowboarding and doing fun activities with others make her happy.

▶ “This always begins with you yourself! How can you make others happy if you are not happy yourself? And when you are happy, others will pick up on that. Accept and appreciate who you are, your authentic self. People who can do this are pleasant to be around. Such a person will support others, show appreciation and place confidence in others so that they can make the most of their talents and experience happiness as well.”

What does happiness mean to you?

▶ “Happiness means being in the centre. Which doesn’t mean: being the centre of attention. In fact, it’s usually quite the opposite. It’s that feeling of intense connection with the world, to others, with all of existence. And understanding yourself surrounded by all these things.

As Friedrich Nietzsche put it: ‘All things are enchained, entwined, enamoured.’ This is not a state of being but rather an event. It comes and goes. Sometimes.

If happiness is on your side...”

Is happiness a choice?

▶ “That’s the idiotic message promoted by today’s society all the time and everywhere. Happiness is something you can make. Anyone who’s unhappy is a loser. And it’s precisely this message that often makes a large number of people unhappy. That’s because happiness isn’t a choice, it’s a gift – and one you must learn to receive. The only thing you can choose is to work on improving your receptiveness. And to find or create circumstances that increase the likelihood of that gift coming your way.”

Is it possible to make other people happy?

▶ “No, that’s not possible either. You can make others feel good in the moment, of course. And you can do things for them to help them find their own happiness.

In other words: work together to ensure the deep sense of connection that happiness entails can actually be established when the possibility arises in togetherness.

You really have to do your best, together. It’s important to really pay attention. And to ignore, for a moment, that thing that gets in the way of happiness: that sense of ‘me me me’.”

A festival with fresh perspective One of the coolest things about working at The Hague University of Applied Sciences is seeing how many interesting fun events are going on around you, all the time. There’s something for everybody and this year, there was something special for me.

At European Studies, we have a course where we ask our third-year students to take on complex, 21st century issues.

On the surface, this isn’t anything new for them. In year 1, they learned to research problems in search of solutions. In year 2, they learned how to propose solutions and how to argue and negotiate them.

But in this course, we try to take it a step further by trying to get other people to care by telling them a good story, in the most popular format of the 21st century: viral video.

The goal is to challenge students to approach the political, social and economic issues they care about from a fresh, creative perspective, producing short videos in multi-cultural teams that raise awareness about their issues and advocate for solutions. These have to be

We’ve been doing this for years and it’s always fascinating to see what they come up with. Documentaries where students visit nightclubs and report on the sexual harassment they face, stopmotion animations about fighting climate change by reducing meat consumption and dramatizations of the effects of depression are just a few examples.

The videos were always fun to watch, but for years, we struggled with one disappointment: a combination of tight deadlines and other activities meant that while students were able to complete the assignment, there was almost never time for us to watch them together.

That changed this year when The Lighthouse literally rolled out the red carpet for us and filled the Atrium with the smell of fresh popcorn during our first ever 21st Century Film Festival.

Our students and other guests gathered to see and applaud each other’s films in the early evening at the Speakers’ Corner, adding an element of celebration that encouraged students to see what they were doing as more than just another assignment and giving them real-time feedback on their work with a real-life audience. It didn’t cost anything but I’d have gladly paid for a ticket to see that.

Now I want popcorn in every course.

The Lighthouse organises a variety of activities to shed light on themes relating to human rights in order to increase awareness of these issues. Examples include defending the freedom of speech, protecting the rights of refugees and combatting politically-motivated violence and persecution. Such initiatives can be theatrical performances in cooperation with UAF and Shah Tabibi, SWE lecturer, the annual Writer's Block Festival together with Amnesty International or, for instance, arranging for students to meet Rose, a human rights advocate from Kenya, through our partnership with the Foundation for Justice & Peace Netherlands.

If you pay attention,

you’ll see art throughout our building at the Johanna Westerdijkplein. And this is no accident. In 1996, based on a desire to inspire our students and help them become good citizens, THUAS took a conscious decision to acquire an art collection of its own. And now that we are once again explicitly promoting the value of global citizenship to our students (and our staff members), the presence of that art has again become timely and relevant.

It consists of various elements: the Angel, the Burning Heart, Panther, Phoenix and the All-seeing Eye. Each and every one of these elements recurs in the building, as well.

T

he Innovation Playground is an informal learning environment.

It is a space where we share knowledge and inspire one another. Where you can hear, see or experience first-hand the research being carried out at the university. A place that spotlights remarkable projects involving students or where you can experiment with new teaching methods, including those supported by IT tools.

The Innovation Playground is a large open space with a flexible layout that can easily be adjusted to accommodate the activity being held there. Research lunches, exhibitions, workshops and hackathons are just a few examples of the events that go on in this Playground. The space is equipped with IT facilities including a virtual reality tool, Kinect, green screen, digital whiteboards, Apple TV, and so on.

The Biomimicry workshops are designed to introduce people to the design of better products, processes and systems by looking for proven solutions in nature.

The Innovation Playground is the "next best place" to explore nature, next to nature itself. The huge blackboard and the many possibilities to present with different media help students to find the most appropriate way to show what they have learned.

The Innovation Playground is located at the Atrium of the main building at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. All members of the THUAS community are welcome to use this space.

Innovation Playground

Sustainability can be summed up by saying that, in a sustainable world, people, the environment and the economy are in equilibrium with one another, so that we are not depleting the planet’s resources.

In other words, to use the planet in such a way that future generations will be able to enjoy it as well.

Activities that deal with these issues are cropping up from every corner of our degree programmes, research groups and study associations. Working to promote sustainability is not only good for the planet but is a great deal of fun at THUAS as well.

D

uring MEAT WEEK the Atrium was furnished with information kiosks about the production of meat and vegetable food. And (fake) animals that are eaten a lot: a cow, a pig and chickens. An immense amount of water bottles was displayed to show how much water is needed to produce just one hamburger.

Third-year Marketing students were issued the challenge of exploring, in depth, the collateral effects of intensive meat farming.

divided into groups. Each group was then tasked with researching a specific stakeholder’s perspective on the meat industry, in order to represent them in a debate. To prepare for that debate with other stakeholders, students conducted a literature review in close cooperation with the Library.

There was also an opportunity to try out an alternative to traditional meat in the form of a tasty insect snack. An alumnus of the Nutrition and Dietetics degree programme also gave a lecture on the choice between eating meat and vegetarianism.

Which includes looking at the ‘true costing’. True costing incorporates not only the familiar production costs but the burden on natural and social capital as well. In other words, it takes things like CO2 emissions, soil depletion, the use of pesticides and the obesity epidemic into account.

For several years now, students in the ‘Climate Action’ first-year block of the Spatial Development programme have been organising a Sustainability Day at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS). Sustainability Day was first created eleven years ago by Urgenda, an organisation which promotes innovation and sustainability. We spoke to Sebastiaan Beresford about this event.

INTERVIEW

What are some of the activities that have been organised for Sustainability Day in past years?

▶ "In past years, we’ve held a kind of plugand-play market in the Atrium. Each student chooses their own topic or theme related to sustainability at THUAS, something to which they’d like to call attention. Our goal for the Day is to help students develop a sense of responsibility with regard to their immediate surroundings. And it’s easy to connect this aim to the THUAS theme of ‘Global citizenship’ as well. In doing so, we cooperate closely with the debate centre, The Lighthouse. They’re able to help us put together nearly anything we ask about. Which is fantastic."

Can you share some examples of ideas developed by students?

▶ "Well, for instance, there was the sustainable web browser Ecosia or plasticstraw alternatives made from elephant grass or starch-based bioplastic. Students have

been exploring ways to reduce the use of paper and plastic, as well as looking at waste separation and the meat industry’s impact on the climate -- which, by the way, has led to a great spin-off in the form of the Meat Week.

Another idea involved having more real plants in THUAS buildings. More greenery in their immediate surroundings has been shown to have a positive effect on people, and therefore on students and their academic results, as well."

What do you think when you look back on the event?

▶ "Sustainability Day is always festive and fun. It’s an exciting challenge for the students, of course, as they’ve only been studying here for six weeks at that point. But we assign them a great deal of responsibility and the students always rise to the occasion. We provide guidance in relation to the process, but the ideas are entirely their own. We tell them it’s best to try to convey their message

in a positive way. Doom and gloom tends to turn the audience off. So we encourage them to create something fun and accessible; sometimes a minor adjustment is enough to make a real difference. It’s just amazing, really, and we are always excited to see what they come up with."

Do you have a wish for our univeristy?

▶ "It would be nice if there was no need for a Sustainability Day. If sustainability was to become the everyday standard. And here at THUAS in particular."

THiNK FeST is a festival organised by and for employees of The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

It’s a day for us to discover the enormous diversity of talent that exists within THUAS and to inspire and learn from one another. Exciting and unexpected workshops, lectures and experiments, some involving education or research and some focusing on hobbies, personal passions or areas of interest.

The Lighthouse ‘organises’ and provides support for this event. After all, it fits in so well with our philosophy. Meanwhile, the joint lunch in the Atrium – where everyone sits at very long tables and has unexpected and surprising encounters and conversations – has become an important day of the year.

t's 8 March, International Women's Day and it’s close to lunchtime. All women at THUAS have been invited to come to the Atrium for the annual Women of THUAS picture. Only fifteen minutes, all those women (and there are quite a few at THUAS) coming together before continuing their day. Well, that is the idea. The picture will be taken in four minutes and only Hilde (of The Lighthouse), the photographer, my colleague Poornima and I (the organiser) are ready in the Atrium. But a lot can happen in four minutes.

Just like last year, I wonder who will show up.

We posted an official invitation on the portal,

but most people only respond to an e-mail or app from someone who is also planning to come. So you never know.

Will my enthusiastic students from my mentor class join us? Talented women from every corner of the world. Or how about those third-year students (m/f) who just put on a stellar performance? Or my fellow International Business lecturers, my BDB class and the teacher trainers at HCTL? Will the inquisitive people from the learning community come and our dedicated colleagues from the research group? – I know

Office, who eagerly sent out my e-mail this morning. Will the cleaning ladies be here who joined us in great spirits last year? And will the promised delegation from Poseidon take a short break from developing policy, communicating and supporting?

One minute left...

And just when we are about to give up, the stairs fill up once again, with women from every nook and cranny of THUAS. Some walk over decisively, others are a bit more reluctant, and a whole bunch have just been recruited during their lunch break.

We smile at the camera and then go back to our day, all here at THUAS. The International Women’s Day picture is one of the highlights of my year. For me this snapshot literally represents the enormously rich, diverse and varied environment we all form within our university. It's a powerful image, and not because (most) men aren't included, but because so many different women are represented in the picture.

Including students, lecturers and staff members in all shapes and sizes. So many different faces – each with their own background, ideas, plans and talents.

So much energy, so many reasons for being at THUAS, with so much to offer the world and each other.

Plenty of reasons for all women – and all men – at THUAS to spontaneously put us in the spotlight (approximately) once a year.

Not because we have to, but to celebrate that together we are THUAS and together we are preparing a new, promising generation of THUAS women – and men! – to take on the world.

And next year we will do it all over again. And once again, I will wonder if you will also join us (probably at 12:26 pm). Until then!

What topics should be considered?

What is going well and what can be improved on? As a member of the advisory group, you meet several times a year in an informal setting. The experience can count toward the Global Citizenship Competence Certificate. See ad on page 30 in this magazine.

The Lighthouse always welcomes students who want to help in organizing events. Each year, we programme several series of events, such as 'debate Tuesday' about topical issues, a series of College Tours with interesting guests, and a series about student welfare. You can participate in many ways: Help us ponder about the content and organization, promote the event, or make a report, blog or video. Although no credits are awarded, you can learn a lot!
