Tough choice. Perhaps the political debate just before the elections in March. Because we could really unpack with a big stage in the middle of the central hall. And because we organised this together with Mirko and Jason, students of Public Administration. Read in this magazine their story ...

But also inspiring speakers about world citizenship offer beautiful moments. Such as Joris Luijendijk, Desanne van Brederode, Abdelkader Benali, Paul Scheffer, Marli Huijer, Bas Heijne and recently Özcan Akyol. We learned to watch properly with photo maker Hans Aarsman, write properly with Wim Daniëls and knowing the shores of the Yangtze with documentary maker Ruben Terlou.

And there was more. Every Monday Oscar Prinsen on his ‘Gesprekkerette’ for intensive conversations with students. Or for example the photo exhibition of Jon Fernandez, a student who made those intrusive pictures of the Syrian war in the streets of The Hague.

Since I'm working for The Lighthouse, I'm so often surprised by what's happening in our university. Surprised by the many activities and ideas of teachers and students, their involvement, idealism and enthusiasm. It is good to be able to share that within the school.

In this magazine you will get an impression of the activities that we have organised as The Lighthouse so far. With internal and external parties. With students and teachers. Seriously and with a wink. For inspiration and maybe it will give you concrete ideas. Feel welcome to share these ideas with us. We can definately make it work!

The Lighthouse organises a wide range of activities.

Lectures, inspirational stories, discussion and debate, workshops, exhibitions, movies and performances.

Surprising interventions that stimulate us to think about social issues, the world and our future.

This activities suits the world citizenship of our students that we consider important at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. To look beyond your own borders, to meet people with different backgrounds, to talk about complex issues and to learn with and also from each other.

The Lighthouse organises these activities together with students, lecturers, teachers and researchers. We also organise events with external parties.

Events of The Lighthouse mainly take place in and around the Atrium our main campus at Johanna Westerdijkplein.

Adjoining the Atrium you will find the Speakers' Corner, the Auditorium, the Innovation Playground and the Lighthouse CafĂŠ. All events are free for all students and staff.

In this magazine you will get an impression of the activities we have organised as The Lighthouse so far.

Serious events or events with a slight wink. We hope these examples will inspire you to come up with an idea for an event. Together we will see what we can make out of it. There are more possibilities than you might think!

The Hague University of Applied Sciences has a Chinese Platform because China as a country is an important partner for us.

Together with The Lighthouse, the China Platform hosts an annual China Week to introduce students and employees to various aspects of China and Chinese culture with seminars, workshops, lectures and activities.

For example there was a seminar on China as global innovative power, Qigong en Confucianism, a by journalist Ruben Terlou, documentary maker of the documentary Along the banks of the Yangtze and a pub quiz with of course "Jackie Chan" as one of the correct answers!

BEATING HEART The Lighthouse is a beautiful meeting place for inspiration within our university.

China Week, are accessible to all, and not just for students, faculty and staff of a particular programme or faculty.

I try to attend as many Lighthouse activities as I can. I hope that the Speakers' Corner continues to expand and grow as a place to discuss and debate important developments in education and society and, above all, learn a great deal from one another.

If I would have to describe the Lighthouse in one sentence, I would say: The Lighthouse is the beating heart of The Hague University of Applied Sciences - intellectually and culturally inspiring and boundary spanning where we can learn a lot, especially from each other.

A view on the world To deepen the notion of world citizenship we often organise lectures and discussions for students. And sometimes the topic world citizenship in itself could even be the catalyst for an event. Philosophers, politicians, writers and artists have the capability to make us think. And we won’t shun a heated debate.

The Lighthouse

wo days before the Dutch elections in March 2017 a heated debate took place in the Atrium. Seven members of the House of Representatives (SP, PVDA, GroenLinks, D66, ChristenUnie, SGP and VVD) were challenged by journalist Joost Karhof to respond to different propositions and tried to gain support from indecisive voters. The debate was the grand finale of the programme Politics@TheLighthouse organised by The Lighthouse and the study association from Public Administration.

The programme also offered a meeting about The level of humanity in politics, a debate between left and right with the political youth movements from PvdA and VVD, a workshop on political skills, College Tours with members of the House of Representatives and a visit to the political theatre play Idealisme is Hot.

Public Administration Students "In our roles as members of the board of the HSV Trinitas student association we collaborated with The Lighthouse to organise eight events. A lecturer tipped us that The Lighthouse was organising activities around the 2017 elections. As that was something we were also doing, we agreed that we would compile a programme together. That resulted in us organising a number of debates ending in a debate here on the square with the spokespeople on education from the biggest political parties.

One of the events was the so-called College Tour with Kees Verhoeven, member of the House of Representatives for D66 (the Liberal Democratic party).

CO-CREATION I often attend events such as research lunches, lectures, network drinks etc. This has a strong relationship with my interest and expertise, and it is good for my professional development. I try to participate every three weeks. That sounds like often but when you reckon that there is something to do every two of three days, then it's only 5% of the events.

To attract more people to these events my suggestion would be to create commitment, for instance with student associations, with specific programmes, or maybe public or commercial partners from outside. The Lighthouse should get in touch with the student organizations, and ask them

what an interesting subject, guest or programme could be. We have approximately 60 to 70 courses, so you can organise events throughout the year in co-creation so you know that you organise things that are relevant and attract a sufficient number of people.

I advise anyone to contact the Lighthouse team. I think they are well prepared for the tasks, they are open to ideas, they are easy to reach, they have good advice to help you, and they never let me down. Every time I had an idea or suggestion, they responded to that, so that gives me a very professional impression.

MEET THE BOSS

Speak up! Of course we have a formal participation council at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, but it pays to organise other informal ways for students to voice their opinion.

On May 22, 2017 the event Meet the Boss took place in the Lighthouse Café. Students could share their ideas for improvement with the members of the board Leonard Geluk, Susana Menéndez and Jan Lintsen. Approximately 30 students were not shy to state their opinions to the ‘bosses’ of our university!

Dialogue beyond borders and cultures You host the Annual International Schuman Student Congress. Could you tell a bit more about the congress?

The congress is a continuation of my PhD thesis on Schuman’s Europe. His frame of reference that I defended at Leiden University in 2012. The congress is made possible thanks to the European Studies programme in collaboration with former lector Jaap de Zwaan.

Schuman is one of the main founding fathers of the European Union. His guiding principles for European unification are reconciliation, solidarity, subsidiarity and supranationality.

His ideas are still topical in the polarised world we live. Since I am teaching at European Studies I see it as a personal responsibility to make his – enriching and mostly forgotten – deeper thoughts on European unification known. In his vision the human being is at the heart of economic, and political, and social enterprises. But these days it seems that the economy is at the heart of everything. We show solidarity if it benefits us economically, and we don’t show it if it doesn’t benefit us. This idea that the human person should be at the centre with his spiritual and social dimension, inspired me to organise the congres.

Especially these days it is so important we try to understand each other.

”

Since 1950 Europe has not experienced war for a long time amongst its member states. This is the longest period of peace ever for European Union member states, and we do not realise it, thinking that it is a given. So, the conference is a way to make people aware of the depth and beauty of

the roots of European integration and to get students engaged in European issues from that perspective. It is meant to promote dialogue beyond borders and cultures.

Especially these days it is so important we try to understand each other, to build on our commonalities and at the same time see the beauty of the differences and talk about them and respect them.

I happened to speak to Leonard Geluk (Chairman of the Executive Board) the other day, and he expressed that my conference is also a reflection of the central topics of the university: networking, internationalization, and global citizenship. Students of very different countries, say how nice it is to hear fellow students speaking about these European and global issues that they all share and to discuss those thoughts.

How do you feel working with The Lighthouse?

The Lighthouse team makes organizing activities easier and more fun. It even inspired me to create an magnificent edition of our next congress. When I want to organise something, The Lighthouse team always supports me, not matter what.

Could you describe the Lighthouse with one sentence?

The name is well chosen, as a lighthouse sheds light and that’s what they do. It creates opportunities and it invites.

Let's meet at the Atrium The Atrium of our main campus is transforming from passageway to meeting point. To strengthen this The Lighthouse often organises activities at the Atrium. Sometimes it’s just a table tennis table, sometimes a there’s a hart to pin your wishes on, but also a man on a high chair for a good conversation, a flea market, a wardrobe swap, exhibitions or making art together.

SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITY Your topic is sustainability. What is the connection with The Lighthouse?

Yes, I think The Lighthouse and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team are very much aligned. Because we are both involved in the core values of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, which are global citizenship, internationalization and network university. And we both have a very broad perspective on what the sustainability is.

For example, I really liked that students were motivated to go and vote. I appreciated that, because it is also part of the sustainable society. In addition, you can encourage politicians to do something with sustainability.

The main part of my job is lobbying. I have coffee with people to talk about sustainability and why it is important to the university. But also you have to try and convince them that sustainability doesn’t always cost a lot of money. It has to be a mind-set to make decisions on more than just economic reasoning. And that is something we still have to integrate here at THUAS. We are still not there; a lot of work has to be done because the university doesn’t really have sustainability in its policies yet. De Haagse Hogeschool heeft sinds kort een nieuwe visie: ‘Let’s Change for a better future’. Recently we have a new vision here at the University: ‘Let’s change for a better future’ so I feel there

So I think we are very much aligned but we do different things. We are more internal consultants I would say, we help teachers implement sustainability in their curricular, but also facility managers to implement a more sustainable vision in their departments. The Lighthouse is more about general awareness around certain topics.

together and work on sustainability issues, even with external parties. If you want to change something here, you have to be involved in the change.

There are quite a few events coming up. What would be an effective way to attract more attention?

II feel The Lighthouse and CSR team should organise things that make a connection with the teachers, for example the National Sustainability Day, which we organise annually. For that special day, we work together with some lecturers who have included sustainability in their curriculum. And other lecturers will encourage their students to take a look. We work together with around 4-5 teachers from Climate & Management and International Communication Management and 200 first-year students.

All these students contribute in some way to another to this event and to create awareness of the importance of sustainability in our university.

It is amazing that you are bringing innovation to our university and creating a commitment in people.

Everyone can be that person, I am a CSR manager here, but you can do it in any profession, like Annelies for example, programme manager of The Lighthouse.

Since May 2016 Eva van Baren and Lonneke Roza together form the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team. They are committed to the stimulation and facilitation of corporate social responsibility within The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

CONNECTION I think The Lighthouse is a very good idea to have at our university. What we are lacking to a large extend is something that brings people together. With Leonard Geluk in charge there was really an impulse with restructuring the organization and the building, to create a meeting place for people from different backgrounds, faculties, and with different interests.

The Lighthouse activities give an extra boost to create this meeting place. But I can imagine that it is still a challenge to get our students to participate in activities outside of their study programme.

If I look back at the university, I was hardly interested in anything that was organised on the university level. A lot of students who are from

The Hague think: I am here just to go to classes, do my exam, get my diploma. That is the hard part, as the Dutch students have a life here, family and friends, so it is quite a task to attract them to The Lighthouse events.

Maybe you should set up something that has more competitive elements, for instance a pub quiz.

This way you can easily do something that is both socially and intellectually stimulating.

Exhibition

NOT HERE, BUT RIGHT NOW Regularly, exhibitions - made by students or employees of The Hague University of Applied Sciences - are displayed in the Expo Room (situated beneath the Speakers' Corner). One of the exhibitions has been called Not here, but right know by Jon Fernandez. A series of ten

photographs in which scenes of the Syrian War and the crisis of the Refugees are introduced into the streets of The Hague. The goal of the series is to provoke an emotion in the viewer for them to recall that even if what is shown is not happening here, it is a real problem that is happening right now.

Jon Fernandez (1996) is a student from The University of The Basque Country in Bilbao (Spain) who studied at The Hague University of Applied Science thanks to an exchange programme. This exhibition was part of the minor Photography. Lecturers: Leon Schrรถder and Nico Laan.

We talk to Aaike van Oord of the Museon. Since 2015 the Museon has been organizing lectures together with The Lighthouse in The Hague University of

Applied Sciences on topics from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nation.

What do you want to tell the students and staff about Museon?

Museon creates a stage for the challenges humanity faces, and are relevant for everyone. That is what we focus on in exhibitions, educational programmes for youth and also in our adult programmes with discussions and workshops. We are trying to be a platform.

We see ourselves as the broker between the specialists like the scientists, the heroes who invent new things and the public.

Have you ever considered becoming an assigment provider client for The Hague University of Applied Sciences?

We are already. We used to work with the programme Communication & Multimedia Design and we are slowly expanding. But we want to do more. We want to share our programme with lecturers. The Museon is open to new projects!

Why should students be interested in the platform you represent?

I think the students could use this platform because we connect topics that matter to humanity with fun activities.

Students want to do their own things but it is difficult for us to reach students. In order to reach the students we connected with The Lighthouse.

Museon is a popular science museum in The Hague. It has collections in the domains of geology, biology, archaeology, history, science and ethnology.

What have you already organised together with The Lighthouse?

On Mondays we host lectures on topics that often have a connection with the study programmes of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. In example: "Are we safe on the internet?" with hacker Yonathan Klijnsma about cyber security; 'Working for eternal life' with the author of The Food Hourglass; 'Geo engineering' about the awareness of climate change; 'Homo Creatus' about how to fix your body or even improve it. We already have lots of nice ideas, but every tip is welcome!

What is the taste of your home?

With this question playwright Annemarie de Bruijn ventured into The Hague and found a diverse cuisine. Together with film maker Jasper Masthoff and stage designer Reier Pos she designed a multimedia dinner for NTjong. With the Indian Radjani, who cooks two times a week for everyone who wants to join for dinner. And with Marijke who is slowly fills her house with fritters.

The multimedia dinner by NTjong was hosted together with The Lighthouse.

It was a stage-like experience featuring a big table with of displays instead of plates in the middle of the Atrium for all students and staff.

Full of Meaning In the exhibition Full of Meaning the artists who are being counseled by LIMOR show their recent works. LIMOR is the National Institution for Social support and Rehabilitation. Apart from the fact that the works are fascinating as an artwork by itself, for the clients of LIMOR art is valuable as a means of recovery and a a way to find meaning in their lives. It offers a purpose and a new point of view but most of all a way to find themselves again.

Writer's Block Write a letter against injustice!

That was the call from Amnesty.

In December 2015 & 2016 many famous and lesser-known people from The Hague wrote their letter for prisoners of conscience in the world.

The festival offered an extensive programme of movies, art, design, presentations and lives music to support all writers.

This year, the festival will take place on 7 December.

At THUAS, research is an indispensable second task, alongside education. It contributes towards the strengthening and innovation of the professional practice and social debate. This is closely linked to education. Unfortunately our research isn't always visible. The Innovation Playground is a suitable place for presenting research results or ongoing research in a lowthreshold and interactive way. and to work

with students. One of the ways to make research visible are the so called research lunches on Monday during your lunch break. These lunches are hosted by our research platforms.

The Lighthouse helps hosting the organization of research events. So, lectors, lecturers, researchers, share your knowledge with us!

As a networking university of applied sciences, The Hague University of Applied Sciences promotes knowledge sharing through research platforms. The content of these platforms focuses on four themes relevant to the profiling of the university, namely: ● Good Governance for a Safe World ● Quality of Life: People and Technology ● The Next Economy ● Connected Learning

RESEARCH LUNCH

Global cities & urban governance The research platform Good Governance for a Safe World has been holding monthly research lunches since January 2017.

During the Global Cities & Urban Governance research lunch, Katja Rusinovic talked about her research project: ‘The City: place of empathy, diversity and governance’. In her presentation, she delved into the term global cities: What are global cities and what trends do we see in these cities? One of the trends is that the tasks and responsibilities of the national government are being increasingly transferred to cities on the

basis of the assumption that complex solutions can be solved better at a local level. We can see this trend of decentralisation, also motivated by austerity measures, in various policy areas including care, housing and education. Rusinovic’s research focuses on these three themes from the perspective of governance. She will present her initial findings during a following research lunch.

CATALYST You can achieve anything with innovation. Ask questions that make people think. And ask the ten questions that they will remember for the rest of their life. You have to get people to stop and think so they question themselves.

You have to present innovation in such a way that it gets people thinking. It is great that something like the Innovation Playground exists, it is big, visible and there is always something to do. You can see things you might be unfamiliar with and that evokes people’s curiosity. But it would be

really interesting if the Innovation Playground became an innovative force within The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Two things can be improved in that regard: you need to try and reach people who would normally not attend and you need to show the innovative process. I think that, so far, the Innovation Playground has been a successful stage for innovative projects.

Yet, it could be a catalyst for the innovative process throughout the whole university. Then you not only show innovation, but you also create innovation.

The Innovation Playground is a living lab for creativity and

co-creation situated on the ground floor in the main building of The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

A inspiring environment that serves as a playground for experiments, creativity and discovery; an incubator for new ideas. We’re going to disrupt patterns and ‘hack’ systems to create new ideas and possibilities. With our jam-packed programme with activities as workshops, lectures, hackatons, challenges and inspiration sessions we plant the seeds of curiosity that with some nourishment could grow into something that could be called innovation.

We welcome staff and students from The Hague University of Applied Sciences to look beyond their borders, we dare them to experiment and take up the challenge and find a solution to the so-called ‘wicked problems’ together with external organisations and citizens of The Hague.

Every term we have an actvity programme around a new topic, open for everyone. We started with the theme gaming, this year we will dive into food, artificial intelligence, circular economy and sound. We can’t create this programme all by ourselves. So we invite you to co-create the activities with us, to ask awkward questions, to share your ideas.

In addition to the activities in the ongoing theme, the space can be used by lecturers, students and researchers for projects, workshops and further activities. Of course, innovative, surprising and multidisciplinary. This use can be requested via iPlayground@hhs.nl.

IN BLOOM And suddenly the Atrium was flooded with flowers.

The Atrium smelled like a flower shop. It was the flower pop-up, a collaborative project between lecturer and resercher Anja Overdiek and The Lighthouse.

The Flower pop-up was intentionally supposed to be the colourful and festive launch project of the Innovation Playground.

The opening of the new space was postponed, thus we decided to simply build the pop-up in the middle of the Atrium. It wasn’t a coincidence that the pop-up store was meant as launch project. It was a great example of the innovative and creative projects that we envisioned in the Innovation Playground. A project in which an external assignment provider - the flower industry - and an internal assignment provider research group Change Management - and a multidisciplinary team of students - Industrial

Design Engineering, International Business and Management Studies, and International Communication Management - work together on exiting challenges.

Young people tend to buy less and less flowers. The assignment was therefor to design a flower experience in the shape of a pop-up store. The end result was a beautifully designed dome covered and filled with real flowers and plants: a colourful experience for all the senses. And students and staff could adopt a plant to take home at the end of the week. It led to an enormous line with anticipating people‌

Hackathon helps the homeless ‘What if we’d turn it around? Instead of saying that homeless people have hit rock bottom with their problems, we could say that they’re starting out on a new life,’ said Sanne van Alphen, a fourth-year student in User Experience. She was standing next to the word web she had just chalked up on the blackboard. She and almost 30 others were participating in ‘Hacking for the Homeless’, a hackathon that Innovation Playground and Stichting Limor held on Tuesday.

Text Lotte Hoes A hackathon is a session during which a group of people brainstorm certain problems non-stop for a certain length of time. In the case of ‘Hacking for the Homeless’, the participants addressed two questions faced by Stichting Limor, a foundation involved with the problems confronted by the homeless. Firstly: how can we improve the social networks of the homeless? And secondly: how can we help them get a better picture of their entangled mass of problems? After all, many homeless people are dealing with such issues as drug addiction, psychological problems and mounting debts. An underlying problem is that most of them don’t have a social safety net. To get answers to these questions, Stichting Limor and Innovation Playground invited people from all walks of life to help them out. This resulted in a group of 30 participants consisting of homeless people, former homeless people, social workers, students and lecturers who brainstormed for two hours non-stop.

‘Actually, this hackathon was an experiment in seeing how we could help Stichting Limor,’ said Carmen Hutting, Programme Coordinator for Innovation

Playground. ‘And it was successful, because people really came up with some good ideas!’ Sanne’s group, for example, was working on ways to increase the mobility of homeless people. After all, this plays an important role in maintaining social contacts. ‘Why not give homeless people a bicycle? It would have to be a highly recognisable kind, however, to keep them from selling it.’ Sanne also proposed giving homeless people a diary that they could use to write down weekly objectives. ‘This is because homeless people are focused mainly on simply surviving instead of considering their future. A diary could help them take steps toward a better life.’

Other groups used green screens, Duplo bricks, drawing sheets and glue sticks to create plans for things like apps; many homeless people use a smartphone to reinforce their social network. ‘Stichting Limor is going to look into what they can do with these ideas,’ said Carmen. Sanne added that the participants thought the 2-hour time period for this hackathon was not really long enough to come up with prototypes of their ideas. But this was intentional, said Carmen: ‘We had scheduled this for two hours because

this session was an experiment. We wanted to see, first of all, if enough people were interested enough to show up. As it turned out, there were, so we’re going to see about planning another hackathon in a month or two. This one will be on a larger scale and will also last longer!’

THNK FST is a festival hosted for and by staff and students of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. On this day we discover the diversity of talents in our university, we share knowledge and we inspire each other.

Last year, the first edition of THNK FST took place with an overwhelming amount of activities organised by students and staff members for the "inhabitants" of The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Surprising workshops, lectures, experiments.

Sometimes about education or research but also about hobbies, personal passion and interest. A festival where we discoverd the "other side" of our students and colleagues.

The Lighthouse 'hosts' and supports this day because THNK FST fits well with our own philosophy.

THNK FST isn't organised by a small group of people which determines what is good, relevant and interesting for everyone of us. The 'inhabitants' of our university create the programme by organizing activities themselves. This year is THNK FST takes place on Thursday 2 November.

rt inspires, intrigues and generates thought, feelings and associations (if it goes as planned). With that idea, once the construction of our main campus got underway, The Hague University of Applied Sciences started compiling a collection of art consisting of sculptures, murals and photographs. Including the striking piece, the man on the tree trunk in the Atrium; one of the works of art commissioned especially for this building. Just like the large vase in front of the building with various elements

that return as individual pieces in the building. An exceptional collection with an exceptional story. Unfortunately, the collection is no longer getting the attention it deserves. Many of our students and staff are not even aware that we have our own collection. It’s high time to do something about that!

An art committee has been set up, supported by The Lighthouse, that is tasked with managing and also activating the collection. The collection must become more visible again and we are planning activities around the

collection. We are thinking about a temporary exhibition with pieces from the collection, inviting the creators of our works of art as guest speakers, and also guided tours and workshops.

The collection is also being expanded with a piece of art that will be made here on site, possibly together with our students. The commission is still in the tender process.

Let's change. You. Us. The world. That's our message at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. We want to empower our students to change and improve the world they live in, but this can only happen if we work together – if we evolve and change.

We constantly need to apply new perspectives and solutions to resolve present and future challenges. We'll find the answers more quickly if we're prepared to share and apply each other's insights, skills and methods.

The Hague University English Drama Society We are looking for new actors, actresses, playwrights, directors, and producers. We also need new members who can help us promote our events, organise rehearsals, design posters and flyers, costumes, sets, props, lighting, sound, and even recording performances.

The aim of our group is to help students and staff stage their own English theatrical productions. For any student interested in organizing a play, either directing, producing or acting, there is a small budget available.

There is plenty of room for new students to take new initiatives and come with new ideas.
