Kotval George Kontogiannis CEO Board President
To our LUW Community, Thank you for viewing our 2021 Donor Impact Report in our new online format. We hope you enjoy it and will share it with friends and family.
While we celebrated the resilience of our community in 2020, 2021 was a year of perseverance. Just when we thought the pandemic was on the wane, it was nipping at our heels. Just when we thought the job market was getting easier, it didn’t. Just when we thought we were getting used to a new normal, we all had to persevere to get through the ups and downs. But persevere we did, thanks to you.
AnahaitaSincerely,N.
Our staff persevered in doing everything possible to protect and support our clients. Our clients persevered in acquiring life skills, securing jobs, and finding affordable housing. Our volunteers persevered in resuming their in-kind donation collections and in-person volunteer activities that were much needed. Our donors persevered by continuing their incredible generosity that insured Lifting Up Westchester had the resources so no one was ever turned away, and everyone was lifted up.
We persevered because of you and for that we remain deeply grateful.

Now, I have my own apartment to recover from chemo. That means the world to me. Because of my condition, we don’t know what will happen. I’m just trying to stay positive and not take anything for granted.
Because you believe no one should have to suffer from hunger or from living on the streets.
Samaritan House is a good place – three square meals a day, heat, a hot shower. But I knew that I wanted to live on my own. While I was at Samaritan House, I kept falling down. The third time I fell, the hospital conducted more tests and found that I had cancer. The Samaritan House staff were wonderful. They let me stay in bed to rest during the day and connected me with LUW’s Supportive Housing Program.
Grace’s Community Kitchen served hot meals on weekdays and Holidays to 50-60 individuals daily. In 2021, we served over 700 individuals with 25,643 hot meals, Grab & Go meals and grocery bags.
The Charlie Bevier Outreach Program provided case management services, referrals to LUW and community services, and other support to guests at the community kitchen and those living on the streets.
Shelters: In 2021, the Open Arms Men’s Shelter provided 479 men with 13,169 nights of shelter and approximately 46,291 meals. Samaritan House Women’s Shelter provided 8,484 nights of shelter to 161 women and served 6,419 meals. All individuals served by the shelters also received clothing, access to medical and mental health services case management support, employment services and assistance finding housing.
PENNY Samaritan House Women’s Shelter and Housing Program
Client I lived in an apartment my whole life and worked small jobs, on and off. I had a pretty good life. It wasn’t the best, but the main thing is being alive and happy. When I had my accident, the nurse’s aide wanted to send me to live in a place near the prison, and I was scared to do that. I ended up homeless for many years. I was distressed straight away and learned bad things, bad habits. Eventually, I found myself at Open Arms Men’s Shelter. The staff saw that I do better when I can stay to myself, and they set me up in a room upstairs. I liked being around people who care about you. Then you learn how to do good things, behave yourself, and stay out of trouble. Lifting Up Westchester helped find me my own place and set me up with a home health aide. Life is a hard thing to cope with if you don’t deal with it. But when you find people to show you a better path, then you can make it in the world.
Emergency Services
I grew up with two loving and hard-working parents. I was the youngest of eight. Although I had a good upbringing, I was molested and started using drugs to cope with the pain. I messed up my life and ended up at the Samaritan House Women’s Shelter.

Client
MR. SAMUEL Open Arms Men’s Shelter and Housing Retention Program
If Lifting Up Westchester didn’t exist, I’d still be in the shelter, I wouldn’t be diagnosed, and I wouldn’t have a fighting chance to live.

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE People like Amanda and Gus from Phelps Hospital made Grab & Go lunches; Angelo & Danny arrive at 7am each year since 2014 to help serve Thanksgiving meals; Eden rallied her Taekwondo and Bat Mitzvah communities to collect items and package men’s bathroom and shower caddies for clients at Open Arms Men’s Shelter; Penny, Sofia, Dana and Jenn running the Dining Hall area for a holiday meal; … just to name a few of the many generous donors and volunteers helping to lift people up.

Housing
(LUW) found me housing and gave me the support I needed. I’m so grateful because I know that living in a healthier environment helped me come out of my depression. It still hasn’t been easy. In 2021, Hurricane Ida flooded my basement apartment and I lost everything. LUW staff came first thing in the morning and got me out of there and into a hotel until they could find another apartment. LUW has seen me at my worst and loved me through it. They never gave up on me. They never abandoned me.
Thanks To You! Lifting Up Westchester provided help to over 300 clients to find and remain stably housed. 95% of clients have remained stably housed for more than one year and most remain stably housed for more than five-years. Because you believe that living in a shelter is not the solution.
SupportiveCRYSTAL Housing Program Client I was in my early fifties when my life changed forever. I got divorced and had to move in with my parents. I thought things might be turning around the day I got the job of a lifetime. But as I was walking home from there, I was hit by a car. I lost half of my spine and couldn’t work. I lost that job. I became very Liftingdepressed.UpWestchester

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE Because of the generosity of so many individuals and companies in the community. LUW Staff, Delilah and Denise delivered hams donated by Bar Taco to our Housing Clients. You provided Move-In Baskets to help our clients with a fresh start. Your support also helped pay for emergency expenses so clients didn’t lose their housing.

HETTI and THOMAS Rainbow Program Clients
Lifting Up Westchester’s staff saw right away that Jacob needed some time to build his confidence. Staff worked with him on building his knowledge and life skills and worked with Jacob to set his own goals – to live independently and self-sufficiently. LUW’s employment specialist helped him find a full time job in a restaurant and our housing specialist helped him take the first step to living on his own by finding him a room he was able to afford and continued to support Jacob for the next twelve months to help him navigate any challenges.
Jacob was a young man who arrived at the shelter. He was very quiet and it took a while for him to open up to staff to share his story. His parents passed away when he was younger and he went to live with his Aunt who was controlling and abusive. As Jacob got older and got a job in hopes of moving out, his Aunt would take all of his money. With no other family or support, Jacob couldn’t take the abuse anymore and ended up homeless at Open Arms.

“To see a young man like Jacob overcome his situation and see him grow in his confidence is as rewarding as it gets” said Denise Reshard, Housing Specialist.
I have a son named Thomas. He has cerebral palsy, is wheelchair bound, and doesn’t talk. Once a month I bring Thomas to Lifting Up Westchester’s Rainbow Program where he gets to do all kinds of activities, like arts and crafts, holiday celebrations, music, and fun field trips.

I love seeing my son making new friends and enjoying new experiences. His face lights up every time he goes. For parents, the Rainbow Program gives us an important break so we can run errands or just have a rest to recharge. We are also given tools to deal with all of the stress and challenges we face every moment of every day. I don’t know what I would do without Lifting Up Westchester’s Rainbow Program. Each year, the Rainbow Program serves 32 youth and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as offering support for their parents/caregivers.

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE LUW’s Employment Manager, Charles dis cussing employment opportunities with a client in our Community Kitchen. In 2021 we also launched a new program called Lifting Up Health to help increase access to healthcare to our clients. Thanks to Touro College for providing a dental workshop for our clients and the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corp (OVAC) for providing free blood sugar and blood pressure checks and vaccinations.

• 99% graduated high school on time.
2021 continued to be tough for the students in our Next Generation Youth Services programs. They struggled throughout the year with school, work, mental health, making friends, hunger, and more. But through it all we saw remarkable perserverance.
Next Generation Youth Services
Staying for the Mentoring program after school helped me with math but also helped me to meet people and make new friends. It helped me boost my confidence and just improved my attitude towards everybody. Sometimes I don’t really have a way to get home, so it is nice to be able stay until until 5:00 p.m., getting help and having fun activities together. It is better than just wandering around the streets. My goal is to play in the NFL and to inspire others that were in the same situation as me growing up. I definitely want to go to college, not only because it’s a great thing for my education, but also for my family. My brother didn’t go all the way through college. So, for my mom, I want to be the one that makes it all the way.
SAM Next Generation Youth Program Client
• 75% proceeded to college while another 10% deferred college for a year to work to support their family. 2021 was also the first full year of our College Success Program. We supported 28 students in college to help them overcome challenges so they can persist and graduate on time. Summer camp is always a highlight of the year to help the kids be kids while making sure they keep the reading skills they gained during the school year. However, one of the most important parts of summer camp is providing food. Thanks to so many donors such as the Albertson, ACME Foundation for providing food; Chef David DeBari, owner of The Cookery, The Parlor, and Dough Nation for donating pizza and Bona Bona ice cream for treating the kids to a sweet time! Because you believe that the wellbeing of todays youth makes our community stronger tomorrow
I got involved with the Next Generation Mentoring and College Prep programs in my junior year. We were coming back to school from the pandemic, and I didn’t really know anyone from the year before since everything had been online.

I was fifteen when I first started in Lifting Up Westchester’s Mentoring Program. I knew I needed help but I was in a bad place. I had really bad depression and anxiety. I was pretty angry too. Eventually I learned I have bipolar disorder. The Lifting Up Westchester tutors showed me they really cared about me and my future, and that helped me want to work harder in school and to seek support for my mental-health issue. When it was time to apply to school, the LUW staff helped me get into a college in California. But they did so much more to make sure I was successful. They helped me apply and get into programs that kept me financially stable, including getting a scholarship from LUW. They called me every day to make sure I was ok, that I was staying on the right track and path in life. With their help, I am working full time as an EMT.

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE Our Next Generation Youth programs are terrific because of the generosity of so many people and organizations… like Amanda, student from Scarsdale dropping off backpacks with school supplies; the team from Markoff & Mittman running the carnival for the eighth year in a row; the White Plains Rotary who organized arts & crafts and Nick Wolf’s famous cotton candy…just to name a few.
