To our LUW Community of Supporters, 2020! So much has already been written about the loss, isolation and other challenges our community – and communities like ours across the globe – faced this past year as a result of the pandemic.

It was a tough year for all of us. Loved ones, community members, as well as two of our Lifting Up Westchester (LUW) staff members lost their lives.

Yet in this report, we choose to celebrate the resilience of our community.

Our clients worked together to implement sanitization and social distancing protocols, while educating each other about staying safe and finding ways to maintain community. They took classes, looked for jobs, moved into new homes and...

Our shelter and soup kitchen staff – most of them essential workers – continued to serve throughout the pandemic despite the risks to their own health and the challenges of social distancing, children being home from school, covering for colleagues in quarantine and obtaining adequate protective equipment.

Our housing teams continued to support 252 clients to ensure they had adequate food, supplies and financial resources to maintain their housing despite the logistical challenges posed by the pandemic.

Our Employment Specialists helped individuals secure 65 jobs.

Our volunteers found new and creative ways to support our programs when volunteering on site was no longer possible.

And our donors defied predictions that giving would be limited due to the financial pressure on so many individuals and businesses – we had more new donors and larger gifts from our existing donors than ever before.

2020 has given us many moments as an organization to reflect on our mission and our vision to make our community work for everyone. We are deeply grateful to have been able to continue our operations during a time of great need. Your thoughtfulness, generosity and belief that you can make a difference allowed us to be on the front lines making sure the adults, families, and children got the support they needed.

No one was ever turned away because of you and our incredible staff.

We already see the road ahead will continue to be challenging, but we know with your unwavering support we can rise together to make our community better and stronger for all of us.

Approximately 1,800 people are homeless each night in Westchester County — almost two-thirds of them families with children. Many more go hungry each night.

Low and stagnant wages put people at-risk and vulnerable to experiencing both homelessness and hunger. They do not have the ability to create a financial safety net to help them weather the storm of life’s unexpected costs — the breakdown of a car, the need for expensive medication, an increase in rent or unemployment. When they cannot keep up with their rent or their grocery bill, homelessness and hunger is the result.

The loss of a home is almost always triggered by other losses — a job, a loved one, one’s life savings, or one’s physical and mental health.

Becoming homeless in itself is a traumatic experience on top of these other losses and often results in a significant backward slide in an individual’s coping mechanisms and mental and physical well-being.

For children experiencing homelessness, the lack of a safe, secure, and consistent place to sleep, play and do homework has long-term effects on emotional development, physical health, and academic accomplishment.

Hunger is not just about having enough food, it is also about having enough nutritious food.

Hunger is a health issue; it affects people’s physical and mental health in serious ways.

Thanks to steadfast community support, Lifting Up Westchester provides comprehensive services to adults and children in need of food and shelter during these moments of crisis. With both compassion and a sense of urgency, we help clients return to living independently in their own homes — so that they can rebuild their lives and never experience homelessness or hunger again.

Emergency Services Every individual or family has their own unique circumstances that led to their experiencing hunger and/or homelessness. However, people living in poverty are at the highest risk of homelessness because they are already in precarious financial positions and particularly vulnerable to rent increases, unemployment and unexpected costs and emergencies. The absence of a financial safety net also makes them less likely to recover from the personal challenges that every American family faces – divorce, illness, mental health, alcohol and substance misuse, or loss of a loved one.

Thanks to your support, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and the fear people had coming into Lifting Up Westchester’s Community Kitchen, you provided over 13,000 meals including Grab & Go Meals and supermarket gift cards.

The Charlie Bevier Outreach Program continued to provide support services and resources to people experiencing homelessness and hunger. Case managers provided informal counseling, referrals to medical, mental health and substance abuse services, assistance with finding employment and housing, and information about public assistance programs such as Medicaid, emergency heating assistance (HEAP), SSI for seniors, etc.

Open Arms Men’s Shelter provided 161 men with 11,987 nights of shelter and approximately 22,000 meals. Through its Drop-In Emergency Center, we assisted 412 men by providing 4,872 nights of shelter and 9,672 meals.

Samaritan House Women’s Shelter provided 87 women with 4,450 nights of shelter and served 10,912 meals. Through its Drop-In Emergency Center, we assisted 113 women by providing 497 nights of shelter and 363 meals.

Many people would be surprised at who comes to Lifting Up Westchester’s Community Kitchen (known as Grace’s Kitchen) for a hot meal. One gentleman is a resident of Mount Vernon. His name is William and he works for a transportation company. Part of William’s job is to transport clients to appointments throughout Westchester County. William loves his job and loves helping people get to their appointments, however, he struggles with having enough food to eat because of his low wage job, the rising cost of food, and the high cost of living in Westchester County. While transporting a client in the White Plains area for an appointment, William heard about Grace’s Kitchen.

“I felt welcomed from the moment I walked in the door and the food is great,” William told us. “Staff is always helpful whenever I have a question. They point me in the right direction and it has been helpful.”

People who have worked all their lives are now finding themselves struggling to put food on the table for themselves and their families. From college students to seniors, individuals and families, the unemployed and the low-wage employed, Lifting Up Westchester’s Community Kitchen is here for everyone because you believe that no one should go hungry.

Housing Stable housing is the foundation on which all other individual and family success is built. Where we live has a cascading effect on a host of positive outcomes.

From educational attainment and future workforce participation to better health outcomes.

This foundation is further strengthened by social relationships, community resources and opportunities to thrive.

Many people who come to LUW have never had this foundation in their lives. That is why LUW focuses on providing safe,

stable, and affordable housing options to individuals at-risk for or experiencing homelessness, including those with HIV/ AIDS, mental illness, substance abuse and domestic violence. We see first-hand how their lives begin to improve.

Thanks to your generosity we were able to assist 252 individuals in securing and maintaining housing. 90% of our clients have remained stably housed for five years or more because of the supportive services we provide to meet their unique needs and circumstances.

Because of you, Lifting Up Westchester changes the trajectory of people’s lives like Marie and her son. Marie was a twenty two year old mom and teacher’s aide in a school. Her son David was seven years old at the time.

Because of her low wages they lived in Section 8 housing. Marie and David were doing well until a mentally ill woman in their building began harassing and attacking them.

It first started with the neighbor repeatedly calling Child Protective Services (CPS) claiming Marie was abusing David. Marie was terrified she was going to lose her son. Thankfully after a full investigation, not only was no abuse or neglect found, but CPS was able to document the neighbor’s harassment. Then the constant banging on their door at all hours of the night started. It was frightening, particularly for David, and exhausting for both of them. Just trying to get in and out of the apartment became more and more stressful trying to avoid contact with this neighbor. Then the woman began physically attacking Marie. The police were frequently called — so much so that their case was categorized as domestic violence abuse. Marie knew she had to move out. With nowhere to go, and unsure of where to go for help Marie was on the verge of becoming homeless. She began to lose faith in her ability to ensure her son’s safety and wellbeing.

Finally Marie came to Lifting Up Westchester for help. Thanks to your kindness in providing funding for our housing counselor, Denise was able to help Marie and David move to a new apartment. Because of people like you, we were able to help her furnish her apartment, get settled, and provide the emotional support for them to recover from this horrible experience.

Today Marie and David are doing great and no longer need support from LUW. Life is never a straight line forward. Your steadfast commitment to LUW gives us the resources that give people hope that their lives can change for the better. We love when our clients no longer need us. That’s a win for all of us.

Restoring Independence The individuals we serve often come to us at the worst moment of their lives. One challenge after another has chipped away at the foundation of who they are. Thanks to your support, 2020 was the second year of our Restoring Independence pilot program (formerly called Pathways) and we are thrilled to share the remarkable impact.

• During the height of the pandemic, 65 individuals secured employment.

• 117 individuals received employment training and certifications.

• 100% of individuals needing life skill supports received training. 100% of those receiving support report it has helped them better adjust to independent living.

• Before our Restoring Independence Program was launched, the rate of clients returning to a shelter was 16% after 6 months. In 2020, all but two clients who have been placed into housing have remained stably housed.

Two that had been displaced were rehoused.

More than 99% of 250 individuals have

retained their housing! Proving that with the right support, people can and do remain stably housed.

• LUW enrolled most of our supportive housing clients in the Mental Health Association of Westchester’s care management program to manage their mental health care (e.g., setting up healthcare appointments, arranging transportation, ensuring bill payment). This partnership has worked incredibly well; MHA reports that hospitalizations and emergency room visits dropped by 99%!

• Neighbors Home Care Services program provided 277,353 hours of service to 131 elderly and disabled residents including aging nuns at Maryknoll Convent in Westchester County.

• 32 developmentally disabled underserved individuals and their families received social and educational programs, case management and respite support.

Thanks to your generosity, Lifting Up Westchester is helping people like David change the trajectory of his life. At the age of ten, David moved to NY with his parents for the possibility of a better life.

Unfortunately, with the very best of intentions, David’s life went in a different direction. He experienced trauma and depression early on that led him to his first arrest at the age of 16.

After graduating from Community College with an Associate’s Degree, he was able to secure and enjoy various jobs — but with these low wage jobs and financial pressures, his depression continued as did his interaction with the criminal justice system.

“To cope, I was always looking for the easy way,” David said.

“I set my life back by making the wrong choices.”

When David was released on parole early in 2021 he was determined to remain positive, and change his life for the better. With nowhere to go, he arrived at Lifting Up Westchester’s Open Arms Men’s Shelter.

“It’s hard to dream when every day everything is so negative. Open Arms is not like other shelters. Their whole focus is to help you learn how to set yourself up for success. But they also make the effort to get to know you and understand that you may need help in other ways. The LUW Staff were wonderful in helping me do the work to find housing.”

David worked with Employment Services (ES).

He received ES assistance with cover letter and resume writing, interview techniques, clothing, applications, and job placement assistance.

Since April 2021, David happily works at a local hospital pursuing his passion in environmental services. David has already received positive feedback and support from his supervisor. Now, not only is David working full-time at $14/Hour, but he is also able to receive a great deal of overtime.

“I had a lot of serious health issues in prison. I love my job now because I get to talk to patients in ICU to share my story and give them hope that they will be ok. I feel God gave me another chance to make a difference in other people’s lives and in our community.

I could not have gotten this job without Charles and all the people who support Lifting Up Westchester.”

Next Generation Youth Service When a society invests wisely in children, the next generation will pay back through a lifetime of productivity and responsible citizenship.

Our Next Gen programs work with children of all ages on a continuum of academic and social support programs from age 5 through young adult. In 2020, the programs were able to adapt and serve 433 youth. Our determined tutors thought of creative ways to engage students through a variety of virtual tools. We also launched a new College Success Program by hiring a counselor to develop a program to provide support and services to our homeless youth in college. We never give up on them, no matter how long it takes!

Did you ever meet someone and say to yourself “Wow, what an amazing person!” That is how you would feel if you met Darius.

From the age of five years old, Darius lived in the Coachman Family Shelter for ten years with his siblings and mom.

LUW first started supporting Darius and his siblings at our Kidzlit program and then at our LUW Summer Camp.

Darius continued to get the academic support he needed and he attended the summer camp each year until he was 12 years old. Darius is now 23 years old.

Each year he rearranges his part time job schedule to return to camp as a counselor to support the kids who were just like him when he was little.

“I remember what it was like to not really understand what is going on with my family when I was little but to feel the stress of it all the same. I know what it was like to come to camp at the beginning and feel detached from everybody. And, I remember how quickly I felt love, safe, and just relief of escaping living in a shelter for several hours a day during the summer. It gave me the breathing room to grow and I often think back to those moments as saving my life.”

Because you believe the prosperity of any society depends on its ability to foster the health and wellbeing of the next generation.

When Darius’s Mom passed away when he was nineteen, our LUW staff and our community of donors became a surrogate family to him and his siblings. Thanks to people like you who never give up on kids, we were able to offer Darius a scholarship for college.

But then the pandemic hit in 2020 when Darius was a Residence Advisor (RA) in his junior year at College. There was a full lockdown in his residence and they had to isolate for 30 days. “It was a very confusing time for everyone,” said Darius. No one knew what the protocols should be or how the College could be more supportive to students and staff experiencing these periods of isolation, and I had very little in the way of resources and tools to support the other residents on my floor. All the students were sent home but I didn’t have a home to go to.

I have never felt so depressed and lonely in my life. It took a huge toll on me emotionally.

They don’t judge. They are very patient and always have their door open for me to stay connected with them. They helped find a place for me to stay and I always get the advice I need to move forward.

It was a really tough year for me and I wouldn’t have made it through without them.”

When the school year ended, I just couldn’t bear the thought of going back. I was feeling anxious and stressed all the time and I found it really hard to learn online. I decided to take 2021 off from school to work and try to get back to feeling like myself again.

Eileen Torres and the rest of the LUW staff have supported me every step of the way.

Darius is planning to finish his senior year of college in 2021/2022 and pursue his goal of going on to medical school or on to a masters in epidemiology or micro biology thanks to the support he received almost his entire life from Lifting Up Westchester and our community of believers — that no child gets left behind.

Your Impact YOU approached the ever-changing environment of 2020 with resilience! By thinking and doing things differently you harnessed the energy of your Community and made a lasting impact on Lifting Up Westchester Program Participants.

Here are a few of the awesome things YOU helped make happen!

• YOU hosted virtual Crowdfunding Campaigns, which helped fill the gaps & build new partnerships in the Community. The contributions collected had a direct impact on the daily operations of the Agency to better serve individuals in urgent need of assistance.

• YOU donated your time and special skills virtually to keep LUW Program Participants and Staff safe and protected during the Pandemic by making masks and providing impossible to find PPEs. • YOU kept Students well-supplied with all the tools they needed to have a successful school year. Even when classes went virtual, students succeeded as you fulfilled Wish Lists.

• YOU answered an urgent outreach and brought smiles and laughter to Summer Campers as they enjoyed fun in the sun.

You helped them make childhood memories they will always cherish.

• YOU donated food directly packed by ShopRite.

This outreach streamlined the process, helping clients struggling with hunger benefit from less interaction. Sourcing food directly from ShopRite also allowed LUW to request healthy food items most in demand by Lifting Up Westchester Program Participants.

• YOU created Birthday Gifts to share with the Brighter Future Students, which brought joy to the kids and happiness to their caregivers. Your donations directly helped caregivers spread their budget to purchase healthy food choices.

• YOU brightened-up the landscape by planting seasonal flowers on the property allowing Clients and Staff to take a step back and enjoy a splash of color in an otherwise gloomy time.

• YOU collected and cleaned coats to keep Program Participants warm in one of the coldest winters Westchester has experienced recently. By cleaning coats in advance for Clients, you lightened the burden of finding a laundromat and the expense to wash the coats.

• YOU fulfilled Holiday Wish Lists specifically asked for by the children and their families helping them carry on traditions. In addition, you helped give gifts that were most appropriate for the individual child and their living circumstances.
