APE Pumps Continues To Increase Market Share With Latest Acquisition Customers in mining, industry and petrochemicals are likely to benefit from increased competition in the South African pump market resulting from the acquisition

by WPIL of Italian pump company Gruppo Aturia SpA and its subsidiaries Rutschi Fluid AG, which came into effect in June 2016.

WPIL is the holding company of local manufacturers APE Pumps and Mather+Platt, both well known in the South African and southern African pump markets.

The newly acquired Group consists of the following companies of ATURIA, ROTOS MARELLI, AUDOLI & BERTOLA and ARIS CHIAPPA. ATURIA was established in 1927 and became a leader in the manufacture of submersible pumps, patenting their electric submersible motor in 1946.

In 1960 the company extended its markets to include America and Asia.

ROTOS manufactured electric motors, mono-bloc pumps, multistage and vertical pumps.

With over 50 years of history in the pump market APE Pumps has created an incredible foundation which has given them the confidence to continue being the leader in the premium pump engineering industry. PRODUCTS MULTISTAGE PUMPS TK-TKR-VTK-TKK SERIES The pumps are all high pressure multistage centrifugal.

Design concept features ring section sealed with “O” rings.

Pumps are available from 65mm to 100mm, with flow rates up to 600mᶾ/hr and heads up to 800 meters.

The axial thrust is accommodated by the hydraulic and dynamic balancing of each impeller on the rotating assembly.

TK pumps feature all the pumps mounted in the horizontal position supported by two greased bearings on each side of the pump.

VTK will allow the pump to be mounted in a vertical arrangement and will be complete with a suitable motor stool for mounting of the electric motor.

The shaft is supported on the suction side by a slide bearing which is lubricated by the pumped media, whilst on the drive end is carried by the electric motor bearing.

The TKR features horizontal pumps with oil lubricated antifriction bearings.

PCM-SP is a self-priming pump capable of negative suction lifts without the use of foot valves.

All pumps are manufactured to comply with ATEX directive, for explosion proof requirements.

Pumps are sizes are from 32mm to 80mm with flow rates from 80 to 140mᶾ/hr and heads up to 45 meters.

The pumps are also capable of temperatures up to 100°C and a maximum pressure of 10 bar.

TURBINE PUMPS PTM / PTM SP SERIES. This range consists of pumps manufactured with regenerative, turbine or peripheral type impellers.

This range also incorporates mag drive technology.

All pumps are manufactured with built in non-return Valves, threaded or flanged.

SUBMERSIBLE MOTORS All motors are Asynchronous, Three Phase.

The rotor is dynamically balanced thus guarantying operation without vibration.

PTM non-metallic pumps are suitable for various chemical compounds and offer excellent resistance, and low wearing rates.

The PTN-SP is the self-priming version of this range which can be installed where negative suction conditions are encountered.

NDM SERIES ISO2858 Centrifugal end suction mag drive pumps manufactured to the ISO2858 specification.

Pumps are volute foot mounted with single volute and flanged connections.

The mag drive is achieved with Cobalt-Samarium magnets a synchronous magnet coupling resulting in zero slippage.

All pumps have been designed to a modular concept so that the inventories of components are reduced.

The NDM also features the Back-Pull-Out design which allows the rotating assembly to be removed without disturbing the suction and discharge pipe work.

Provided a spacer type coupling is used the BPO will also result in no movement of the driver.

The pumps are available from32mm to 100mm, flow rates up to 200mᶾ/hr and heads up to 90 meters Pumps are rated at 16 bar.

South Africa is currently in a unique and challenging environment. As the political landscape changes, business will need to be able to adapt dramatically if they want to survive.

T

he country’s economy is under immense pressure and the internal markets are contracting. Real growth for business will only come from expanding opportunities through exports both into Africa and the rest of the world. The reality is that South Africa can now produce within the same cost range as our low cost competitors in India and China. We also have the skills to produce consistent world class quality. Business now only requires the political will to become centres of excellence.

If government can provide the right incentives, we will be able to kick-start our industry. The spin-off of these types of programmes are jobs, which in turn will create more political stability. More stability will create more foreign investment and an overall stronger economy.

Government is driving for transformation and localization; the challenge the pumping industry faces is to find the right skills that will not compromise the quality of the products and services provided. We at SAPSDA are fully committed to providing training that empowers both new entrants as well as the more experiences hands. These lectures are given by experts in their respective fields of all the sectors of the pump industry, who are able to pass on their years of experience.

Through our networking meetings, we have been able to interact with government agencies and drive transformation by bringing role players together in symbiotic working relationships. An example of this is that we recently hosted Mr. Takalani Madzivhandila of Sector and Industry Development from the offices of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development. This networking meeting was hosted

by Xylem. Such meetings will continue giving our members more opportunities to meet with various role players in the industry.

SEIFSA Reiterates Its Concern Over Sustained Job Losses Despite Marginally Better Production Figures in Some Sub-Industries SAPMA would like to aknowledge the information, statistics, advice, concerns and assistance which is available to them through SEIFSA, invaluable. The members rely heavily on SEIFSA for assistance in wage negotiations with the Trade Ubnions as well as MEIBC..

An example is the following input where the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) has today reiterated its view that the metals and engineering sector remains in a critical condition, with job losses forecast to continue despite pockets of production improvements in some sub-industries.

T

he annualised rate of change in the metals and engineering sector production now stands at -4,4% (minus 4,4%), judged by the latest (May) numbers released by Statistics South Africa on Tuesday, 12 July 2016.

“This is dismal by any yardstick. The year to date (January to May) production declined by 4,8% on the same period last year, against our expected number of a 3% contraction this year,” said Mr Henk Langenhoven, SEIFSA Chief Economist.

Mr Langenhoven said that going back to 2013, the average year-on-year contraction was 1,6%. Looking at month-onmonth data, the pattern appeared to be one of a month of growth followed by two months of contraction, losing the previous gains, with May recording 1% growth.

He said that the Federation had previously cautioned about the sustainability of a recovery, concluding that the growth in production experienced in February could be explained by inventory rebuilding by companies, after a low point was reached in December 2015.

“The massive job losses recorded in the sector during the first quarter of 2016 (-9 012) cast further and serious doubt on a sustainable recovery from now on. The cumulatively worse job losses, totalling 15 553 over three quarters (or nearly 4% of the workforce), does not bode well for recovery,” says Langenhoven.

Mr Langenhoven said monthly production improvements would have to continue over a broad level in the different sub-industries in the sector to result in a change of fortune.

This is not the case at present:

• In May the production of structural metal (+10%), rubber (+9%), basic iron and steel (+4%), other fabricated metals (+3%) and plastic products improved;.

• In the first five months of the year only electrical machinery and equipment (+8%) improved their production, with the biggest losers being household appliances (-21%) and machinery (-8%); • Over 12 months only electrical machinery and rubber production grew, with all the other sub-industries shrinking.

Mr Langenhoven said that it was of extreme concern that production declines over each comparative period occurred at a faster rate than the number of jobs lost during those periods. He said this indicated that job losses may accelerate further during the year.

Mr Langenhoven said that sustained improvement in economic conditions (mining, construction, automotive and exports) was necessary to reverse the downward trend in the sector and that the production data released this week did not change the Federation’s view that recovery will only be felt towards the end of 2016, if not around the middle of 2017.

“The metals and engineering sector remains in critical condition and it seems as if the patient will suffer a serious setback over the next six months before improvements can be expected,” Mr Langenhoven said.

Fibertex Kavi Needlepunched Liner Pipeline Renovations Fibertex KAVI felts - manufactured from polyester fibres - form the basis for effective coating, impregnation and installation of cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liners, for highly efficient ‘no-dig’ pipeline renovation projects.

“

Fibertex KAVI multiple layer felt liners make it possible to repair even heavily damaged pipelines using the ‘nodig’ method, with numerous advantages over conventional open trench pipe repair procedures,” says Lance Woolley, business development manager, Fibertex South Africa. “With these cured-in-place liners, there is no need for excavation during pipeline repair work and thus inconvenience to traffic, production, business or residents is minimised.

“These environmentally-friendly needlepunched nonwoven felts are designed to restore full or partial pipeline bearing capacity, improve hydraulic pipeline parameters, increase flowrate and ensure perfect pipeline tightness.

“These felts, which are resistant to abrasion and chemical agents, are designed to later accept the saturation of epoxy-based polyurethane resins to ensure efficient performance and extended service life from the cured pipe liner.

Fibertex KAVI needlepunched fabrics also ensure elasticity of the repaired pipelines, providing a smooth interior, with no joints. Contamination is minimised and cracks in the yielding soil are prevented.”

A uniform felt weight and density is designed to meet exact application requirements, as well as the diameter and shape of the pipe to be repaired, including ovoid, arch shaped or circular cross sections. Felts made for building up layers are produced to precise width and length specifications, with uniform thickness.

Benefits of Fibertex cured-in-place technology also include polyester fibres that provide at least 50 years of durability, biaxial stiffness made to exact specifications and suitability for inversion, pull-in and inflate installations. High tensile

strength of the liner is achieved by a sandwich structure and scrim combinations in certain products in the KAVI range.

ykes pumps are purpose designed and built for the mining, construction, municipal and rental markets.

They feature automatic priming capabilities based on a Venturi system that can deliver suction lifts of up to 9 metres. The pumps offer efficiency, are extremely robust and built with 316SS impeller and wear plates as standard construction, ensuring reliability coupled with versatility.

The dry running, oil lubricated mechanical seals fitted to the Sykes range allow the pumps to operate under snore conditions and reprime automatically without incurring damage.

Integrated Pump Rental will be offering the OEM full range of pumps, including the Low Head (LH), Medium Head (MH), High Head (HH) and Extra High Head (XH) series for handling solids. These pumps are used in a host of applications ranging from water transfer and pit dewatering through to site cleaning.

Klinger Mzanzi Completes Rationalisation of Business Entities Klinger Mzanzi is a majority owned subsidiary of Klinger (Pty) Ltd, the largest manufacturer, supplier and distributor of fluid sealing products in Africa. The Group comprises four operating divisions, Klinger Mzanzi, GC Baars, Klinger SA and Wright Seal.

he decision to reduce the operating divisions from four to two has recently been finalized which means that the two divisions namely, fluid control and fluid sealing and engineering plastics, share a common customer base. This results in a higher level of service and easier product access for customers. “A recent trial done for a customer experiencing a significant amount of wear, erosion, and corrosion in its pump components are one of many success stories,” continues Hoosain.

The pump operates in a corrosive medium containing various salts, abrasive particles, a pH ranging from 4-8 and a temperature of 60˚C. The pump is made from 316 stainless steel and currently only lasts for two weeks. “The end plate and volute casing respectively, after approximately two weeks of use, showed signs of substantial corrosion, wear and erosion. The customer requested Thermaspray to look into the possible refurbishment of the components and the possibility of extending the two week life significantly.”

“After applying our new range of coatings the components were refurbished, machined and ground to the correct sizes for assembly. The coating chosen and applied is corrosion, abrasion, and erosion resistant. We are pleased to report that the pump is currently running for the last seven months without any issues,” concludes Hoosain.

The station is provided with four inflow ports for DIN push-on connection and with two DN100 ports for venting and use as a cable duct.

The pump is easy to install and maintain without entering the sump. The pipe work and gate valves are made of high quality stainless steel. For level control there are three options: a pressure pipe, a float switch or a float sensor. The maximum allowable temperature of the medium is 40°C, short term up to 60°C.

Ensuring The Integrity Of Geomembranes Companies involved in the handling of waste water must pay special attention to the correct containment of pollutants through suitable geomembranes that have been correctly installed, maintained and monitored.

Major Water Infrastructure Upgrade for Lusaka SMEC has been appointed by the Millennium Challenge Account – Zambia Limited (MCA-Zambia) to undertake programme management services for citywide water supply, sanitation and drainage improvement works in Lusaka.

T

he project scope includes: upgrading the primary water distribution system, expanding secondary and tertiary water distribution networks (including supply and installation of house connections and water meters).

The project will increase access to a reliable water supply, improve sanitation and drainage services

Sewerage systems will also be improved by extending existing sewers and facilities to non-serviced areas, and mitigating flood risks by constructing new primary outfall drains and upgrading existing drains.

“This project will increase access to a reliable water supply, and improve sanitation and drainage services in selected urban and peri-urban areas of Lusaka,” Pula Herath, General Manager, Water & Environment, Africa Division, SMEC International, comments.

SMEC has been appointed programme manager, traversing the whole Compact. This comprises coordination and management of technical consultancies that, in turn, are responsible for the administration and supervision of all seven construction packages, with a capital cost of about A$120 million.

SMEC’s services include general programme management, financial reporting, technical assistance and advice and general support in ensuring MCA-Zambia’s compliance with all relevant environmental, health and safety standards.

Herath explains that this project is a good indicator of the need for reliable basic infrastructure in Africa, which “is somewhat different to that in South Africa, where we are focusing mainly on efficiency improvements.”

He adds that SMEC probably has the largest African exposure of any consultancy involved in the water infrastructure sector, with 14 offices in four main regions.

Formation and Makeup The inaugural meeting of the Pump Cluster took place in February 2013. The formation was motivated by the request of The Department of Trade & Industry (the dti) and Eskom to create industry clusters providing one contact point for any given industry to assist with implementation of the various Government initiatives such as NDP, IPAP, CSDP and B-BBEE.

he purpose of the Cluster is primarily to promote Local Manufacture of Pumps, Seals, Couplings and MV Motors. The inaugural meeting recognised that Pumps require seals, couplings and motors in order to function. Membership was extended to include seal, coupling and motor manufacturers. For simplicity the Cluster was named “SA Pump Cluster” defining the prime product.

Other Associations such as SAPSDA and SAPMA are active in the pump industry but have a wider membership which includes any supplier, consultant or importer involved in the industry. By contrast and in order to avoid any conflict of interest, The SA Pump Cluster membership is open to local manufacturers only.

Objectives The Clusters mandate and objectives are: • Revitalise the local industry through capital investment and world-class manufacture, achieving economies of scale to become globally competitive on cost thus increasing export potential.

• Increase productivity • Optimise supply chain localisation via the development and upliftment of downstream suppliers.

• Strive to create transformation by promoting local manufacture in order to create meaningful jobs as well as foster black-owned business.

• Develop skills which would be required to support the

local manufacture of Pumps, Valves, Couplings and MV Motors.

• Create and develop new markets; promote exports.

Activities Activities of the Cluster include: Support to a market survey commissioned by the dti on the pump industry. In addition the cluster members have worked closely with the dti in identifying Pump types as well as MV Motors that should be considered for designation.

The IDC approached the Cluster for assistance when Municipalities were not meeting service delivery commitments, particularly in supply of clean water. Although some Cluster members are involved with Municipalities, there was reluctance on the part of the Municipalities to engage with the Cluster.

The Cluster has presented its Local manufacturing capability to a potential partner in Government’s announced nuclear programme. There is a requirement for any successful bidder to have a large percentage of local content in their bid. The Cluster members are well placed to offer suitable product.

Concerns Of major concern to the cluster however, is the apparent lack of compliance by some SOC’s, particularly Municipalities, in aligning with the various Government initiatives. In the absence of such commitment to local manufacture and given current tough economic conditions, the prospect of further job losses cannot be discounted. Ultimately, this could lead to significant de-skilling of the pump industry.

Conclusion At a presentation given to the NFTN in 2013, the anticipated spend on infrastructure was likened to a Tsunami which was about to submerge local manufacturers. Companies were urged to assess their production capacity in order to take full advantage of the expected increase in demand. By contrast this has turned into a receding tide. The economic down turn coupled to lack of real support for local manufacture has had a profoundly negative effect which has resulted in job losses rather than employment creation. The cluster is determined to arrest this slide and its activities are thus growth focused.

Extending the Life of Pumps and Fans Replacing a malfunctioning component in a building plant can often be a costly upheaval. Optimising the lifetime of a pump or fan can be assured through upgrading, and the use of monitoring techniques, says Lars Kahlman, senior application specialist at SKF.

umps and fans are the foot soldiers of the process industry, but their quiet dedication means they are often ignored.

sense. Replacing a part can mean huge upheaval, as the old machine is removed and a new one installed. People underestimate how much is involved in this process. Upgrading can avoid all that – and is likely to cost less.

In fact, upgrades are a necessary part of building plant efficiency over time. When commissioning a new plant, there is rarely enough money upfront to buy the best equipment across the board. However, it can actually be better – both economically and technically – to upgrade equipment over time. It helps operators focus on equipment with reliability issues and avoids ‘design overkill’ on the original plant.

This is done at the operator's peril, because when these components break down – or run below optimum efficiency – the whole process suffers. Manufacturing and process companies are under huge cost pressures at the moment, making it vital to maximise assets and maintain uptime.

A word of warning: safety must never be compromised.

Plants that are specified with too much emphasis on cost reduction run the risk of being ‘under designed’ – and that can be dangerous.

Only recently, a processing giant was forced to run its Finnish refinery at 70% utilisation following a malfunction in one of its cooling systems. The problem is expected to cause production losses of several tens of millions of euros – which drives home the importance of the humble fan to overall profitability.

In most cases, pumps and fans are upgraded to improve two things: reliability or efficiency.

Reliability and efficiency A good example of a pump reliability upgrade is changing the lubrication system. In hot, humid regions – or a humid environment like a pulp and paper mill – there's always a danger of bearings corroding through water ingress. Atmospheric moisture gets into the oil sump and condense, and is transferred to the bearing by the oil rings. Just 200ppm of water in oil is enough to degrade bearings fast.

It guarantees fresh oil in the system and cures water ingress. This type of system is becoming more common: around half of all refineries in the US are now using oil mist systems in their pumps.

Oil pump installation The specific refinery problem was caused by a new air cooler, which was installed during a recent maintenance turnaround – showing that even brand new components can cause problems.

If a component is malfunctioning, the temptation is simply to replace it. However, an upgrade – by relubricating, or changing a bearing set, for example – often makes more 26

However, the electrical output of the drive can cause arcing – which can destroy the bearing in a very short time. In extreme cases, this can happen inside three days.

The answer is to upgrade the system, most notably by fitting insulating bearings such as SKF's Insocoat bearings (ceramic coated) or using hybrid bearings (ceramic rolling elements), which withstand electrical arcing. This is particularly import-

ant for smaller motors. Other measures – such as brushes, earthing, insulating couplings and special condition monitoring – can also help to alleviate the problem.

On the surface, it appears that introducing VSDs is adding a problem. However, the huge saving in electricity far exceeds the extra cost of fitting the VSD and upgrading the bearing system.

Fan fare Fans have many similarities with pumps – but it's true to say that fans often start with worse original design conditions.

At SKF we have a portfolio of upgrades such as self-aligning bearing systems, fan oil lubrication systems etc. that can help to boost their efficiency and reliability. For certain types of fan, the scope for upgrade is even larger than it is for pumps.

As with pumps, VSDs can help to boost the energy efficiency of fans. Again, insulated bearings help to extend component lifetime. Another problem – far more common on fans than pumps – is misalignment. This is even more prevalent for large fans, which are commonly used in industries including pulp and paper, cement and metals processing.

Online monitoring and ODR can substantially prolong the lifetime of the pumps and fans.

An effective solution is to specify a self-aligning and axial free bearing, such as SKF CARB toroidal roller bearings. This corrects angular and axial displacement, while a standard spherical roller bearing takes the thrust loading. When upgrading, it is common to replace both standard roller bearings with the new arrangement – rather than simply inserting one self-aligning bearing.

Close monitoring With or without an upgrade, it's possible to further extend the lifetime of pumps and fans by keeping a close eye on them through online asset monitoring. This technique is commonly used to monitor expensive, process-critical equipment by spotting problems as they happen. For example, it can detect the tiniest changes in bearing vibration – giving an early indication of impending failure, and allowing remedial action to be taken before the problem escalates into inefficiency or even catastrophic failure.

It is usually applied to expensive machinery, but the emergence of reliable, affordable sensors – and the ability to process large amounts of data – means it can also be used with smaller equipment such as pumps and fans.

Equipping each pump or fan with sensors, including a transmitter, as done in SKF Wireless Machine Condition Sensor, allows the creation of a sensor network. Output data can regularly be analysed and acted upon. For example, sensors can identify whether cavitation is developing in a pump – allowing operators to respond to the problem by adjusting its running speed, or switching to a back-up pump. There are often hundreds of pumps in a process plant or refinery. The challenge, as always, is to process the vast amounts of data generated by the sensors.

Online monitoring can be used to nurse a ‘problem’ machine back to health – by monitoring it more frequently than similar machines. It also allows machines in hazardous areas to be monitored without endangering staff – or, at least, by minimising the number of times they have to check the machine.

That said, there are some things – such as a leaking seal, yet is a sign of impending failure – that a sensor cannot spot. In these instances, it is vital that operators make visual assessments of components and supply this information alongside the automated online data. This operator-driven reliability (ODR) is another vital factor in keeping pumps and fans running for as long as possible. Skilled operators get to know their equipment – and will spot things that even a sophisticated sensor will miss.

Bearing from SKF ODR has become popular in applications such as pump farms in refineries, and can make a huge difference in performance: at SKF, we have seen that ODR has helped increase mean time between failures (MTBF) by 15%, while decreasing maintenance costs by more than 10% in this area.

These two approaches – online monitoring and ODR – are complementary to one another, and are best used side by side. In each case, a skilled operator – one at the machine side, the other analysing process data – is using their experience to help squeeze more performance and longevity from a pump or fan.

The advantage of using quarter-turn butterfly valves rather than any other type of valve is the simple, water-shaped design, with fewer parts for easy repair and minimal maintenance. Although butterfly valves and ball valves both offer quarter-turn actuation, the benefit of butterfly valves is when they are actuated pneumatically, they offer accurate media control. The rotational disc in butterfly valves is lighter than a ball valve and these butterfly valves require less structural support than a ball valve of the same diameter.

Unlike a ball valve, the disc of butterfly valves is always present in the passageway within the flow. This means a pressure drop is introduced in the flow, regardless of the position of the valve. Ball valves should only be used for isolation whereas butterfly valves can be safely used for isolation and control of flow.

DPI Plastics Racks Up Orders in Large Bore Water Infrastructure Projects DPI Plastics has already racked up two major orders for its new 630 mm Class 16 mPVC pipe, which it is now capable of manufacturing at its Roodekop factory.

T

echnical and product manager Renier Snyman explains that this represents the latest addition to the 630 mm diameter range from DPI Plastics, which was the first manufacturer of mPVC piping systems in the 1990s. It remains an innovator and international leader in this segment, having supplied technology licences as far afield as Australia, Asia and South America.

DPI Plastics produces mPVC pipe in pressure classes from six to 25 bar, and in standard 6 m lengths, complete with spigot, integral socket and rubber ring seal for ease of installation.

All mPVC pipe is manufactured in accordance with the SANS 966 quality standard.

“We have already completed a small order on that. We are in the process of starting our next order, which is quite a big one,” Snyman reveals. The increased demand for mPVC piping systems is due to its applicability for large-bore water infrastructure projects.

It is ideally suited to bulk water supply projects due to the fact that mPVC is considerably more ductile than industry-standard unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) mPVC (Modified Polyvinyl Chloride) has been designed specifically to provide similar tensile strength and greater resilience than standard PVC piping products. lobally we see a mining crisis, which has affected mining regions around the world, but in particular South Africa’s mining sector. Not only are we faced with the global pressures of commodity prices and currency fluctuation, but in South Africa we face additional factors that contribute to the crisis. These would include volatile labour relations, tough government interventions as well as regulatory uncertainty.

The impact of Eskom’s load-shedding and rising power costs has an additional adverse effect. Due to many of these factors a number of Mining Companies have been forced to reduce overheads and head office costs, which has resulted in job losses throughout and a rather light operational level staff compliments. Banks in South Africa have been forced to re-assess and track their exposure and proactively manage these, therefore less lending and higher interest rates add to the crisis. With commodity prices having declined significantly over the past months which in turn means fewer are able to meet the risk management requirements.

Success of Local Content Designation Depends on Active Support by Public and Private Sectors The implementation and verification of compliance with government’s local designation rules across both public and private sectors is pivotal to the success of the policy, says Peter Thomson, Director, AVK Holding Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd.

VK Holding Southern Africa is a market-leading manufacturer of valves for the water, waste water, mining, industrial, gas and fire protection markets.

The company emerged from Premier Valves Group (PVG) when the Danish valve manufacturer AVK acquired a majority stake in 2014.

Says Thomson: “Local designation rules apply specifically to government and state-owned companies, although compliance does not necessarily flow automatically. However, for private sector organisations that can be quite vocal about the need for supportive industrial policy, voluntary compliance with local content designation should be a priority.

“This is essential because success begins in the specification stage where we need engineers, designers and procurement departments to ensure that they explicitly specify the requirement for local content of 70%. There is already a Local Procurement Accord in place through NEDLAC, and we trust that businesses will adhere to it” AVK Holding Southern Africa completed the establishment of a new valve manufacturing facility in Alrode in response to government’s drive to support manufacturing development by specifying the percentage of local content required when government entities and state-owned companies procure certain products.

Since July 2014, AVK Southern Africa Holdings has created 114 jobs, 84 of them for artisans, across the company’s value chain.

“Local content designation has already seen a boost in investment and job creation in a number of sectors including clothing and textiles and bus and locomotive manufacture.

However, sustainable long-term success of local content designation needs not only public sector compliance but also active private sector support,” says Thomson.

The Valve and Actuator Manufacturers Cluster of South Africa (Vamcosa), announced earlier this year that it is supporting the DTI’s compliance efforts by monitoring tenders to identify those that do not specify 70% local content and tenders that are awarded to companies not compliant with the policy.

“This new AVK factory is dedicated to manufacturing AVK products which before had to be imported from Denmark and other countries. We have changed the layout, improved the engineering process have invested in computer numeric controlled machines. AVK also has shot-blasting and coating facilities, right to the back end of the factory, which has been completely overhauled,” says Thomson.

He adds that the investment has enabled AVK to achieve the scale and capacity to meet not only South African require-

ments but also expand in sub-Saharan market.

“We have recently mobilised an export sales team and they are looking at target markets reaching into Southern Africa.”

AVK hopes to train 1 500 people this year in its Academy.

This Academy will offer training to non-AVK employees from across the company’s value chain. The training will include people with varying levels of experience in order to support skills development at all levels.

The core aim of the training programmes is to help employees and industry to understand how to consult and install the range of valves correctly.

“When we are called out for repairs we invariably find that the valves are not installed according to AVK standards.

Instructors will replicate real-world conditions in the training programme which should reduce problems relating to incorrect installation. We believe high-quality training and supervision will enable us to deliver solutions rather than products alone,” says Thomson.
