COVER STORY

The global spread of coronavirus brought unprecedented disruption to the business world As the economy continues to reel from the effects of the pandemic, companies are under more pressure than ever. Lifting Africa spoke to Stephanus Schoonbee, General Manager at AMS Lifting & Towing Systems (AMS LTS) to find out more about their plans going forward. AMS LTS commenced business in July 2014 as a division of African Maritime Services Namibia (AMS NAM) slowly building up a reputation as a reliable lifting service provider. In 2018 the company separated from AMS NAM and registered as AMS Lifting & Towing Systems (Pty) Ltd. According to Schoonbee, who owns 10% of the company, the other 90% is still owned by AMS NAM with Robert Whitehead serving as the Director of both companies. “We are proudly a 100% Namibian registered company with 100% Namibian shareholding,” says Schoonbee. Focusing on the supply of lifting and towing equipment and providing a range of specialised services to the oil and gas and general marine industries in particular it is a business that has gone from strength to strength. Few, however, could have predicted the outbreak of a global

4

Lifting Africa - Mar/Apr 2022

pandemic and the subsequent quarantine policies that were instituted all over the world. “Covid had a very big impact on businesses, also in the lifting environment,” says Schoonbee. “It stalled many projects while in some cases, it brought projects to a complete halt. Especially our marine customers were heavily impacted by the pandemic.” Unprecedented and completely unexpected it was not always easy dealing with the situation. As lockdowns were instituted around the world business travel ended and remote working became the norm. “Covid had a significant adverse impact on our business,” says Schoonbee. “It was not easy and we had to find ways of dealing with it. Fortunately, we quickly learned how to make the best of a bad situation.” The AMS LTS team were, however, determined that the virus and its ongoing effects were not going to stop them

The new normal Adapting to a post-Covid environment has had its challenges, says Schoonbee, but the business has found its feet in this new operating environment. AMS LTS recently completed a major project with a Malaysian offshore drill company. “This is our third project in a row since 2019 with this company and we are very proud of this contract. It speaks to their trust in our workmanship, our reliability and the high-quality service we provide.” The scope of the work done for the drilling company includes magnetic rope test (MRT) inspections, lifting gears inspections, load testing of various cranes and structures, and non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections as well as managing the sea fastening project. Furthermore, the company is currently in the process of achieving DNV 2.7-1 and 2.7-3 certifications. DNV sets standards for ships and offshore structures. They comprise safety, reliability and environmental requirements that vessels and other offshore mobile structures in international waters must comply with. According to Schoonbee, another important focus for the company in the past few years has been training. This year five employees will undergo training with the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA). “Training is imperative in our business, not only to meet the increasing technical demands of the marine sector but to ensure we are at the top of our game at all times. In the lifting business there is no room for error and ensuring our team has the correct skills to meet any job requirement is of critical importance. Safety is always a top priority and ongoing training not only ensures technical ability but also speaks to safety.” Asked about the ongoing impact of Covid- 19, Schoonbee says he is cautiously optimistic. “We expect this situation to slowly improve as international companies start allowing their staff to travel again.” He says the operating environment still has its fair share of challenges to deal with. “We currently are experiencing extensive logistical problems with long

from going about their business. Finding ways around the various challenges became the norm. “With all the negative that covid delivered, it taught us a lot about ourselves and our abilities to adapt and how important it is to work as a team,” says Schoonbee. He emphasises teamwork saying this is part of the company’s ongoing success. “It is an approach that allows our business to be more efficient, but also it builds morale.”

lead times and unreliable shipping schedules. This does have an impact on projects and can cause delays. Also, the shortages and costs of steel, synthetic materials and freight rates are making the costing of imported products challenging.” The outbreak of war in Europe involving Russia and Ukraine has not helped the situation much. “With the huge energy cost increases for our European suppliers and the current shortage of raw material, long lead times as well as the war in Ukraine, it is very difficult to predict the short to medium-term outlook,” he says. Looking forward Thanks to the various close relationships that AMS LTS has with some of the world’s leading international brands such as Bridon International and The Crosby Group, the company believes it has a leading edge. “More so, our team is well trained and passionate about service, quality and integrity ensuring the company’s reputation as a trusted supplier to our domestic and international customer base continues.”

Sidewalk to rooftop – lifting for success Lifting a car onto the roof of a three-story building is not a site one sees every day, but this is just what passersby were treated to in Gqeberha recently. The lift and placing of the vehicle on the top of the building were all in a day’s work for the team at Crane Aid Port Elizabeth. According to Jacques Scheepers, Crane Aid PE Branch Manager, the company was approached by Red Bull to place one of their trademark Mini Coopers on top of a building for an event in the city. Not one to shy from a challenge, the team were quick to agree and in February the lift – and de-lift – was concluded, because what goes up, must come down after all. “The events planner wanted the car to be on display at the event that was taking place at a rooftop venue in Gqeberha,” said Scheepers. “We placed the car the day before the event and removed it successfully

the day after the function.” He said the Crane Aid PE branch including technical supervisor Johan Els and Nico Scriven, Salsa Pestana, Damian Alexander, Xolisa Galada and Louis Richards, all technicians and assistants, were excited to be part of the project. “What makes this project important is that it is a testament of the dedication and skill of Crane Aid and Morris when approached with a task,” explained Scheepers. “It also showcases the eagerness and willingness of all the branches and head office to take on any challenge and deliver success no matter what we take upon ourselves.”

Taking on the challenge Showcasing the capability of Morris was part and parcel of the project, said Scheepers, indicating that there was no hesitance on the team side when first approached. “We knew that we could safely and securely do this and immediately set out to make sure we were able to meet the client’s requirements.” According to Scheepers, a platform for the car to be strapped down on was required to lift the car without any danger of it falling. “The job started with designing and building this platform at our branch in Gqeberha. Secondly, we designed and built a spreader bar to ensure that the lifting tackle that was used to lift the car did not damage the vehicle.” For the actual lift, the team used a 50 Ton mobile crane that could easily handle the height and reach of the job. “It was important to use the right equipment. The size of the mobile crane, to ensure it could handle the reach and the height in comparison to the weight of the car, combined with the weight of the lifting equipment was a serious

8

Lifting Africa - Mar/Apr 2022

According to Scheepers, it took about two hours to get the car on top of the building. This included the site establishment, rigging and off-loading. “It took us about two hours to remove the vehicle from the roof the day after the event took place.” Success achieved According to Scheepers, this was not considered a particularly difficult lift by anyone in the team considering they do similar lifts quite often as the team installs quite a lot of OHC builds although, he does, acknowledge that placing cars on roofs in itself is not that common a request. The biggest challenge with this particular lift, he said, was the famous Gqeberha wind. “The wind factor can always be a challenge and this being an

outside lift we had to consider it. Secondly, our priority at all times was to ensure the safety of all the personnel involved and the bystanders.” The team also had to ensure that there was no damage to the Red Bull vehicle and that it arrived back on the road in the same condition it went up as. “Our technical team did an outstanding job and we are very proud to say we achieved all our objectives. No one was injured and the car was not damaged. The skills diversity of the technical staff at the PE Branch was a contributing factor in this.” Scheepers said the team’s vast knowledge of the industry, experience in a wide range of

fields, dedication to succeeding at all costs as well as being leaders in the field of lifting equipment and lifting needs was showcased during the project. “As a company, we are also focused on growing our people through continuous training and exposing them to jobs where they can showcase their ability. “Furthermore, promoting our people within the company to ensure that skills are not lost does set us apart and give us a competitive advantage.” Morris Material Handling SA Pty Ltd / Crane Aid, +27 (0) 11 748 1000, sales@morris.co.za, www.morris.co.za

consideration. Considering the weight of the car was 1.5 tons, the car platform another 1.1 tons and the spreader bar 250kg we opted for the mobile crane with its 50-ton lifting capacity.”

FORKLIFTS

Forklift perimeter lights improve warehouse safety With forklifts constantly moving items from one place to the next and visibility often compromised by narrow aisles and high stacking, the industrial equipment environment can present an element of risk. At their busiest, warehouses can become sites of accidents or injuries if employees are not constantly vigilant or don’t have the right tools to do their jobs. Even the best warehouse optimisation tools cannot make up for human error caused by a lack of concentration. With this in mind, 600SA Holdings, a division of materials handling and industrial equipment group of companies, EIE Group, has introduced safety perimeter lights as a standard feature on all their CT Power electric forklifts.

600SA’s, Inland Sales Manager, Sonia Pretorius, says safety is paramount for all 600SA-associated products. “In addition to urging our customers to provide training for their forklift drivers, we have now ensured that our CT Power forklifts are the most visible machines in any distribution centre, reducing pedestrian injuries and possible disabilities by up to 40%.” Red laser lights are projected onto the warehouse floor from the sides of the forklift, creating a highly visible red, one-metre perimeter or ‘barrier’ around the forklift. This allows warehouse employees to see the equipment from any angle. In addition, another blue laser light projects two metres onto the floor from the back of the forklift, creating an early warning signal for anyone is close proximity to the machine when it reverses. Pretorius says the lights are an ingenious way of alerting warehouse employees to the whereabouts of the forklift at any given time.

10

Lifting Africa - Mar/Apr 2022

“Considering the tight spaces that forklifts and people negotiate in warehouses and the overall focus on safety, it is surprising that CT Power is the only forklift distributor that offers these types of lights as a standard feature.” She says the safer a work environment is, the more productive employees are. “In fact, a 2017 Harvard study indicated that safety in the workplace made employees feel more engaged and increased productivity by 12%.” “Not only do safety measures make people feel better about where they work, it also results in less downtime due to the reduction of accidents and injuries.” “This leads to greater efficiency and productivity – a win-win situation for everyone.”

TELEHANDLERS

The growing demand for high capacity telehandlers

Construction projects across many markets and segments are on the rise, which drives greater demand for telehandlers to support heavy lifting and placing. Telehandlers are generally one of the first machines on a job site, and one of the last to leave. The higher capacities of highcapacity telehandler models make them particularly well-suited for use on wind farms, and in the industrial construction, mine and quarry, power plant, logging and energy (oil and gas) industries. High-capacity telehandlers help users save time, money and labour on the job site by allowing operators to accomplish multiple tasks with one machine. Their higher lift capacity helps minimize the number of trips required to move bulky, heavy materials, while their enhanced versatility allows them to move efficiently across the work site for improved productivity. With the growing demand for highcapacity models, comes the need to help people understand how they differ from traditional telehandlers. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we get about high-capacity telehandlers. What does JLG consider to be a high-capacity model? The generally accepted telehandler classifications are set by the Association of Equipment 12

Lifting Africa - Mar/Apr 2022

Manufacturers (AEM) with input from OEMs for the purpose of market share reporting.

10.08 m • Maximum Reach: 17-ft 7-in / 5.36 m

The telehandler classifications for North America are based on maximum lift capacity, whereas in Europe they are typically segmented by maximum lift height.

The key features of JLG highcapacity telehandlers

JLG offers three high-capacity telehandlers — the 1644, 1732 and 2733 models. The spec check of these highcapacity telehandlers are: 1644 • Maximum Lift Capacity: 15,650-lb / 7098.72 kg • Maximum Lift Height: 43-ft 7 in / 13.28 m • Maximum Reach: 31-ft 1-in / 9.47 m 1732 • Maximum Lift Capacity: 16,755-lb / 7599.94 kg • Maximum Lift Height: 31-ft 8-in / 9.65 m • Maximum Reach: 18-ft 7-in / 5.66 m 2733 • Maximum Lift Capacity: 26,600-lb / 12065.56 kg • Maximum Lift Height: 33-ft 1-in /

The JLG® high-capacity telehandlers are the first telehandlers in North America with optional SmartLoad technology. SmartLoad is an advanced bundle of three integrated technologies that work together to deliver a greater level of operator confidence. The SmartLoad bundle includes: • Automatic attachment RECOGNITION: Which recognizes the attachment on the end of the boom and displays the appropriate capacity chart to the operator. • A load management INFORMATION SYSTEM (LMIS): Which graphically depicts the location of the load within the capacity chart, indicates whether the load is compliant and prevents the operator from violating the boundaries of the chart. • And a load stability indicator (LSI): Which works with the LMIS system to limit operation when the load is nearing the maximum capacity indicated on the capacity chart.

Additionally, the JLG high-capacity telehandlers were among the first to include JLG’s precision gravity lowering system and a soft stop boom control that slows boom functions at the end of the cylinder stroke. These models also have a reverse camera and optional reverse sensing features. These telehandlers were designed with the operator in mind, boasting spacious cabs with enhanced visibility, two-speed hydrostatic transmission and an optional boom float and ride control feature for enhanced load stability when travelling on uneven terrain. What other features are offered on JLG high-capacity telehandlers? JLG’s high-capacity telehandler models feature an integrated tow hitch and are compatible with a wide range of standard and speciality attachments to optimize usability across a multitude of applications. The attachment range includes the following: • Bale clamp • Bale cradle • Dual fork positioning carriage • Pallet forks • Side-Shift Carriage with Dual Fork Positioning • Standard Carriage • Log Handler • Pipe Grapple • Coupler Mounted Hook • Material Handling Arm • General Purpose Bucket • Grapple Bucket • Light Material Bucket • Multi-Purpose 4-in-1 Bucket • Coupler Mounted Winch • Steel Coil Handler What is driving demand for high-capacity telehandlers? A lot of the increased demand for higher-capacity telehandler models has to do with the sheer size and scope of materials to be handled. We’re talking about industrial projects where building materials are much larger. And, there are other applications that, like solar and wind power, as well as energy exploration and extraction and mining, where heavy components need to be moved around the worksite, sometimes over fairly long distances. The growth in these heavy-lifting applications has led to the need for more versatile and robust machines, like high-capacity telehandlers. Today, high-capacity telehandlers are being used to do work that has historically been done by small roughterrain cranes, excavators and wheel loaders equipped with forks to improve productivity with advantages such as compactness, mobility, manoeuvrability, speed, lift

height and forward reach. The high-capacity market has been buoyed in recent years by the increased use in energy extraction and refinement, along with wind farm construction growth. As speciality industries continue to grow, so too will the demand for high-capacity telehandlers. In fact, we may even see them replace more traditional machines, like wheel loaders, in certain applications where greater reach is desired. What customer inputs are influencing the high-capacity telehandler market? As demand increases, JLG continues to focus on delivering features that improve operator confidence and machine versatility such as a spacious cab, a reverse sensing system and a reverse camera. The market also continues to be focused on return on investment, as defined not only by the initial acquisition cost but also by the total cost of the product over its lifetime. Rental company owners and owner/operators are paying more attention to the versatility of each piece of equipment, the productivity gains it can provide, and its retained value.

REACH TRUCK

The new Combi-MR4 with Dynamic 360° ™ Steering Since Combilift launched its first C4000 model in 1998, multidirectional capability has been one of the major hallmarks of the company’s wide range of handling solutions. Twenty-four years and thousands of R&D hours later, its latest product takes multidirectional capability to the next level. The Combi-MR4 is a 4-wheel electric powered multidirectional reach-truck, which incorporates Combilift’s new Dynamic 360° ™ steering, which provides rotation on each wheel, enabling seamless directional change of the truck while on the move. The system allows this extremely agile forklift to work in forward, sideward and crab steer mode, guaranteeing swift operation and excellent

manoeuvrability. Hence the full name of the new model: the Combi-MR4 Dynamic 360. The impetus for the development of this latest addition to Combilift’s portfolio was to develop a multidirectional truck, with a very low platform to maximise storage density within racking. The Combi-MR4 is available in two unique models, with capacity

ranges of 2,500Kg - 3,000kg and 3,500Kg - 4,500kg respectively, and can operate in aisles as narrow as 2265mm when guided (based on 1200mm deep material). To maximise all storage space in racking systems the wheel configuration of two drive wheels at the rear and two sets of smaller dual front wheels provides a platform height as low as 380mm, allowing otherwise redundant areas towards the floor to be used. In keeping with Combilift’s common overall design ethos, the highly versatile Combi-MR4 can handle long loads as well as palletised goods with ease and can load and offload from delivery trucks. Driver comfort and safety are also major considerations, and this new truck delivers the goods from an ergonomic point of view: a high visibility operator cabin, multi-function control joystick, AC-electric power steering and joystick operated hydraulic mast functions all make for a smooth ride and straightforward operation. The articulated rear axle with two

To achieve this level of manoeuvrability, Combilift utilised its newly developed-in-house Dynamic 360°™ steering. This novel steering concept enables operators to manipulate the truck’s positioning and orientation without the need to stop and change driving mode. Intuitive and easy-tooperate, this is achieved by simply twisting the control joystick right or left to adjust the wheel positions simultaneously – providing crab steering and allowing direction change to on-the-go. Combilift always likes to ensure that any new product has been thoroughly tried and tested in the field to make certain that it is 100% fit for purpose. Following the initial operation of 3,000kg CombiMR4 units, a 4,500kg model was developed after receiving a request from Combilift’s dealer in the BeNeLux region - Mabo BeNeLux, for a larger capacity unit for their customer TABS (Timber and Building Supplies Holland). One of

the Netherlands’ leading suppliers of timber products and building materials, with 104 outlets across the country, TABS has partnered with Combilift and operated its multidirectional trucks for more than 15 years. It now has MR4 trucks at several locations in the Netherlands and is about to take delivery of its 15th and 16th trucks, which will work at its distribution centres in Zaandam and Bleiswijk. Combilift CEO Martin McVicar: “TABS are delighted with the ongoing successful implementation of their Combi-MR4s and the

improved levels of efficiency thanks to the overall design and features such as low platform height as well as the advanced Dynamic 360° ™ steering system. I have no doubt that this new additional electric model will grow Combilift’s customer base. We are looking forward to showcasing the CombiMR4 to our existing dealers, and potential new customers during the LogiMAT Intralogistics exhibition in Stuttgart at the end of May”.

CUBE JACK

Largest synchronised lift to date with Enerpac Cube Jack array In what is believed to be the largest array of Enerpac SCJ-50 Cube Jacks for a single lift, PHL Hydraulics Ireland Ltd has used 16 cube jacks for the synchronised lifting of a 50m x 7m racking system weighing 160 ton at a large industrial facility. Completed in just over 1 hour, the steel racking was lifted to a height of 2.2m. Lifting large racking systems can be a logistical nightmare involving forklift trucks and chain blocks.

incremental lifting, holding and lowering of heavy loads. It uses a base lifting frame and self-aligning, lightweight steel cribbing blocks to provide high-capacity and stable lifting.

Other approaches can be cumbersome such as large scissor tables and electro-mechanical screw jacks.

Steel cribbing blocks have several benefits over wood cribbing, including fewer cribbing components to handle and align, lifting up to 8 times faster lifting, and lifting higher than traditional cribbing methods.

The array of Enerpac Cube Jacks is powered by a single split flow pump, making the process simpler and quicker. The SCJ-50 Cube Jack is a compact and portable hydraulic solution for synchronised

considerable. Using other lifting methods would have meant more labour and costs as well as being slower and more hazardous everything would have to be built at a height.“The ability of the cube jack to hold the load is important when using this number of cube jacks.”Typically, we would assign one person per four cube jacks to handle the steel cribbing blocks,” says Damien Lynch, managing director, PHL Hydraulics Ireland Ltd. ALL-TERRAIN CRANES

Grove presents two new five-axle all-terrain cranes

Staged at Manitowoc’s Wilhelmshaven facility, guests were treated to factory tours showcasing the latest operational improvements, live demonstrations and presentations of the company’s all-terrain crane range. They also witnessed the launch of two game-changing all-terrain cranes – the Grove GMK5120L and the Grove GMK5150XL. Grove GMK5120L The 120 t capacity Grove GMK5120L offers long reach with its extraordinary 66 m main boom. With this versatile all-terrain

crane, Grove expands its all-terrain range with another outstanding taxi crane. Customers benefit from greater flexibility and low transportation costs. The all-terrain crane can easily carry a class-leading amount of counterweight – no matter if counterweight configurations for

10 t, 12 t or 16.5 t per axle are required. With compact dimensions of just 14.195 m overall length and 2.75 m width, the GMK5120L offers superb access to jobsites, complemented with great maneuverability resulting from Grove’s MEGATRAK independent suspension. Grove GMK5150XL The Grove GMK5150XL all-terrain crane provides increased capacity and a boom length that surpasses most 220 t machines in the market. This new model is redefining the five-axle, 150 t class by offering almost 69 m of main boom. At 68.7 m it can handle 8.1 t, at 66 m it lifts 9.4 t and at almost 60 m it lifts an incredible 12.7 t. These load charts are truly unmatched in the market. The GMK5150XL crane’s taxi charts are also best in class, ensuring easy roadability and transport savings. In addition, interchangeable counterweight slabs with the

CRAWLER CRANES

Electrifying: LR 1160.1 unplugged Unplugged stands for battery-powered at Liebherr. The crawler crane type LR 1160.1 unplugged is the latest model in the series. The crane has a load capacity of 160 t and electrifies the first customers with soft tones and an intelligent safety concept. - The LR 1160.1 unplugged is one of the world’s first battery-operated crawler cranes. The electro-hydraulic drive has the same performance specifications as the conventional version. Both versions are operated in the same way, which is especially convenient for machine operators

if they often must switch between machines. One exceptional feature of the unplugged machines is Zero Emission. They do not produce any emissions and are extremely quiet. This strikes the right note especially in noisesensitive regions and finds favour with construction site personnel and residents. The loudest voice: silence In idling mode the sound pressure level of three unplugged cranes, at a distance of 16 m, is equivalent to that of a normal conversation on the jobsite at a distance of 1 m. This corresponds to a value of only 60 dB(A). If it is considered that a crawler crane is in idling mode for 60 % of the time on the jobsite, this low noise level is an advantage with great resonance. Unplug: that’s all you must do The LR 1160.1 unplugged can be operated with or without cable, therefore: unplugged.

Capacity of the battery is designed for 8 hours lifting operation. The crane can be operated without re-strictions while plugged into a conventional electric supply with 63 A or charged within 4.5 hours. Using a 125 A supply, the battery can be fast charged in only 2.5 hours. Highest level of safety The designers of the crane laid great emphasis on the safety concept. Just like every crawler crane from Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH, the LR 1160.1 unplugged is equipped with all estab-lished assistant systems for safe operation. The latest feature of the LR 1160.1 unplugged is the Gradient Travel Aid for the safe negotiation of slopes and inclines. The crane’s control system automatically calculates the centre of gravity and warns the operator before the crane leaves the safe area. While travelling, the operator

The company has always endeavoured to lead the indus-try with the latest technology in cranes. With the unplugged series, the potential of crawler cranes to function optimally as an electric version has become reality. This achieves the best possible combination of customer benefit, environmental compatibility, and efficiency. The unplugged version of the crane can be recognized through the blue accent on the upper car-riage - the distinctive signature look.

If necessary, the boom angle can be altered so that the machine remains in the safe area. The Ground Pressure Visualization calculates the actual ground pressure of the machine in real time and compares it with the specified safety limits of the relevant jobsite. This means the oper-ator is permanently aware of whether the machine is situated in, or is approaching, a critical ar-ea. When erecting or lowering the boom, the Boom Up-and-Down Assistant indicates the approach to the tipping border and automatically stops operation before the operator unintentionally enters an unsafe zone. First deployment: Great Britain Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH delivered the first three LR 1160.1 unplugged cranes to Great Britain. Select Plant Hire Company Ltd. is pursuing the goal of operating more and more zero-emission construction sites and has even planned three further LR 1160.1 unplugged cranes as investment for 2022. Select already put its trust in the LR 1250.1 unplugged, the world's first battery-powered crawler crane, at the time of its market launch. Lifting Africa - Mar/Apr 2022

RSS test weights, cradle for mobile cranes Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd. (RSS) has delivered two 10-weight test sets and a cradle for mobile crane load testing at an international aerospace, defence, and security company. The cranes are used predominantly for lifting military equipment at an undisclosed site. RSS provided two 7.5t sets—each comprising six 1t, two 0.5t, and two 0.25t weights—and a cradle to fit them in, manufactured by its Gemmak Engineering business unit. The cradle weighs 2t but offers a 25t safe working load (SWL). It was initially delivered to RUD Chains Ltd. as the primary contractor, prior to transportation to the end user, where it will be used for testing a fleet of cranes as per Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER).

The one-piece cradle, which has RUD ABA weld-down lifting points, is designed to hold the same weight on each side so the centre of gravity allows for a true test. The user can utilise rigging gear from its on-site store combined with load cells or other force measurement technology to meet load testing requirements, document findings, and return the cranes to work. The project served as another example of RSS’s expanded engineering capability, having acquired the Gemmak business, located near to de facto headquarters in South Wales, in 2019. RSS has more than doubled Gemmak’s turnover during the last 12 months, principally through the design, manufacture, fabrication, and repair of lifting beams, swing jibs, lifting platforms, pipework, runway beams, and lifting brackets, in addition to providing bespoke equipment for the steel, shipbuilding, petrochemical, and other heavy industries. Steve Hutin, managing director at RSS (and Gemmak), said: “We will

fabricate anything metal, using the latest design, cutting, and welding technology. At the centre of our suite is a solid modelling CAD [computer-aided design] and computer-aided engineering computer programme [SolidWorks], backed by state-of-the-art tooling technologies. We could feasibly generate R20 million-worth of business through the machine shop in the next year, increasing the volume of one-off projects, plus batch orders, and even maintaining ongoing production lines for customers.” Gemmak’s tooling includes various guillotines, a plasma cutter, radial drills, magnetic drills, pillar drills, a centre lathe, an iron worker / press, an abrasive wheel, a band saw, a circular saw, a threading machine, and welding sets, plus fume extractors and air compressors. Hand tools include a series of 4-inch to 9-inch grinders and multiple cordless drills.

MOBILE HARBOUR CRANES

LHM 550 celebrates 300th delivery One of the leading port operators in Poland, Port Gdańsk Eksploatacja S.A., has signed a contract with Liebherr for a new LHM 550 mobile harbour crane. The machine will primarily be used for bulk handling. This is the 300th order of this crane type in total. The LHM 550 thus marks more than ten years of international success for Liebherr. In the sales year 2022, the Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour crane continues its success story that has already lasted for over ten years. Liebherr can announce an anniversary with the 300th delivery of this crane type.

One of Poland’s largest port handling operators based in Gdansk, Port Gdańsk Eksploatacja S.A., recently took delivery of its 300th LHM 550. For the company, which carries out handling activities on a total area of over 89 hectares, it is one of the largest investments in the company's thirty-year history. The crane supplied has a boom length of 48 metres and a lifting capacity of up to 104 tonnes. The new machine will primarily be used for bulk handling of coke, coal and scrap metal. "We want to increase the effectiveness, functionality and speed of our services. The quality of our work processes will improve significantly. This will have a positive impact on our handling rate. In addition, our customers can expect faster handling of the commissioned vessels. We greatly appreciate the extraordinary mobility of this machine.” “We trained our crane operators at an early stage and carried out

26

Lifting Africa - Mar/Apr 2022

extensive modernisation measures in the port area in advance so that we could use the machine as quickly and as efficiently as possible," comments Radosław Stojek, Chairman of the Board of Port Gdańsk Eksploatacja S.A. A unique success story The delivery of the first LHM 550 to Kuwait in 2010, marked the beginning of a Liebherr success story. As the most popular crane type in the Liebherr mobile harbour crane portfolio, the LHM 550 has contributed significantly to Liebherr's market leadership in the MHC market, which has lasted for more than ten years. In every year since its market launch, a double-digit number of this crane type alone has been delivered worldwide. In terms of sales per country, India leads the ranking with 23 units sold, closely followed by Italy and the USA. In the 2021 sales year alone, 26 LHM 550s were sold worldwide.

MOBILE HARBOUR CRANES

A versatile all-rounder The Liebherr mobile harbour crane series is suitable for a wide range of applications. For example, the LHM 550 can be used for bulk or general cargo handling as well as for container handling. Even heavy-duty lifts of up to 154 tonnes are possible. Statistics show that a large number of Liebherr customers use the LHM 550 for several applications. Well over 200 of the units sold are used for at least two or three applications. Of these, most are used for bulk and container handling. Electric Drive Further to the possibilities in application, multiple drive types are also versatile. In addition to a hybrid drive concept consisting of diesel and electric motors, the cranes can also be used exclusively in electric only operation, thus making an important contribution to emissionfree goods handling. Over 30 % of the LHM 550s sold in the 2021 sales year were equipped with an electric main drive.

OVERHEAD CRANES

New shareholding for BB Cranes

Cape Town crane manufacturer BB Cranes has upgraded its manufacturing capacity as part of a transition to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Condra group of companies. The acquisition is expected to substantially increase BB’s share of the Western Cape market over time. It became effective on March 1st. Johannesburg-headquartered Condra is a leading manufacturer of custom-designed overhead cranes, portal cranes, jib cranes, hoists and general crane components for countries throughout central and southern Africa, as well as for specific countries in North America, South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. Commenting on the new shareholding, BB Cranes director Barry Brink said that the additional resources of the Condra group would expand his factory’s manufacturing and refurbishing capabilities, increasing capacity and improving productivity. “We will be able to manufacture more cranes more quickly and 28

Lifting Africa - Mar/Apr 2022

efficiently than before, and we will be able to more energetically serve the Western Cape market,” Brink said. “Our focus will continue to be on the Western Cape Province. Our intention is to reach additional customers and to expand our base of over 400 successful installations.” Brink said that the first of the factory upgrades resulting from the changed shareholding, a girder jig, had already been installed and commissioned to enable quicker, more efficient manufacture of cambered girder box sections, reducing production time by some 75 percent. BB Cranes’ staff and branding will continue unchanged. The company will operate independently within the Condra group, and existing staff will continue to service the customer base. A condition of the acquisition is that all staff retain their jobs. The

management team is to remain in place, and the expertise of founder Barry Brink, now in semiretirement, will continue to be available to all customers whenever needed. BB Cranes was originally formed in 1992 to marry crane girders and electrification systems manufactured in Cape Town to technically complex hoists, crabs, end-carriages and other crane components supplied by Condra, saving customers the cost of transport between Johannesburg and the Mother City. Majority-owned by Condra since 2016, the company is currently working towards the ISO 9000 certification of the parent group. Cranes made by BB have shown a steady increase in size over the years, from the 11-metrespan overhead gantry cranes manufactured in the original

OVERHEAD CRANES

Paarden Eiland factory, to the 25 and 26-metre spans of recent orders made at the current works in Rivergate Industrial Park. Though the majority of new deliveries have spans and capacities of around 20 metres and 50 tons, the company has the ability to deliver cranes with spans of any length, and capacities of up to 250 tons. The majority of orders are for single and double-girder electric overhead travelling cranes, and for portal machines. There are four service teams to supply installation services, load testing, commissioning and maintenance capabilities. Recent contracts have included a 5-ton portal crane for Everflo (refrigeration systems), a 16-metrespan 20 ton portal crane for a local power station, and two 5 ton container handling portal cranes for Bumbo (baby products). Ongoing work is provided by orders for overhead travelling cranes placed by wastewater treatment works. BB Cranes enjoys a competitive advantage in this market because of the shot-blast zinc metal spray paint specification, supplied in South Africa by only one company which is also based in Cape Town.

TOWER CRANE

AK 42 - truck crane with an outstanding working speed, 180 degree joint position and tower crane function The new AK 42 truck crane works faster than ever and, thanks to its innovative mast profile made of ultra-high-strength fine-grained steel, scores with a high lateral stability for heavy loads, especially in the 1 t to 3 t range. With a maximum lifting capacity of 6 t and extension lengths of up to 42 m, the crane, for example, lifts

1.5 t to a range of 18 m at a height of 24 m. Thanks to the performance of the powerful hydraulic system

which has been increased by up to 70%, the AK 42 operates at a significantly improved speed and is quickly ready for use and several crane functions can be controlled simultaneously at a constantly high speed. For the first time a truck crane of this class can raise its mast completely vertically at a 90-degree angle to the vehicle. This is an advantage not only when working close to the facade. This innovative mast geometry is made possible by the newly developed telescopic mast system with an aluminium jib that can be extended hydraulically to a length of over 14 meters at a hight speed. Another absolute innovation is the 180 degree position of the jib, which straightens up as a 180 degree extension of the base mast with the joint fully straightened. Ideal for picking up loads close to

TOWER CRANE

the crane or for working in platform mode on the vertically positioned mast in tight set-up situations. The straight boom position gives the crane additional height to reach distant locations across the building. The endless slewing range of the AK 42 opens up a circular working area within which the crane approaches any point at the shortest route. The vertical positioning of the mast and the strong jib joint also enable the new tower crane function of the AK 42: when the main mast is vertical and the jib is in an approximately right-angled position to the mast, loads can be transported into the building by telescoping out. The jib can be telescoped out fully and at a substantially higher speed under loads of up to 1,000 kg. Mounted on an 18 t truck, the AK 42 is extremely compact thanks

to a minimum footprint of 2.55 m and available as a hybrid crane with a powerful electric motor. A short wheelbase makes it manoeuvrable and suitable for offroad use. Despite long extension lengths, the new truck crane has a comparatively short mast overhang. The low slewing radius of just 2.12 m makes it easier to choose a set-up site. The variable outrigger technology also offers a major advantage in confined spaces. Thanks to its stable mast system, the truck crane is compatible with the most powerful Böcker platforms with a load of up to 600 kg. Even in platform operation, the boom extends fully hydraulically and reaches the most remote angles during assembly or repair work. The AK 42 is equipped with the state-of-the-art control technology - including automatic set-up with auto-levelling and range indication in live mode, automatic rope

tracking, switching between rapid and creep speed, rotation and erection angle limitation, transfer control with two cameras, point-topoint travel and go-home function. The modern radio remote control, which displays all operations on the full graphic display in just one operating level, permits an intuitive operation. For taking tools and building materials to the construction site, the AK 42 has a spacious loading area with completely foldable lateral walls, that can be easily accessed on both sides via extendable steps. The load is secured flexibly via lashing rails. Variably combined, e.g. with lashing straps with suitably sewn end fittings, the fixing system facilitates handling during loading thus saving time.

Smith Power Equipment – Builder of German brands in Africa Not only is South Africa the largest capital equipment market on the continent, it is also re-garded as the ‘bridge to Africa’ for many international companies looking to establish a foot-print on the continent. Many German OEMs seeking to establish themselves in this market have over the years turned to Smith Power Equipment for a distribution partner. Germany is one of South Africa’s most important trading partners. To provide context, in 2017, Germany was ranked as the second-largest trading partner for South Africa, behind China and ahead of the United States. Among some of the major German companies that are represented in the “gateway to Africa” are original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Reputable OEMs are well aware that a brand is as good as its support. Above all other factors, aftermarket service has become a key parameter in influencing customers’ buying decisions in the capital equipment space. The South African market has reached a golden age of services, and to survive and prosper, the capital equipment supply chain has transformed into a service-centric sector. It is therefore critical for OEMs to partner with strong and reputable local suppliers to ensure that their

brands meet these evolving market needs. One company that has been at the fore-front of building German brands in South Africa is Smith Power Equipment. One of the key suc-cess stories is the partnership with the KION Group. As part of its one-stop shop approach, Smith Power signed a distributorship agreement with the KION Group for the distribution of the Baoli range of materials handling equipment. Through the agreement, Smith Power added the Baoli range of diesel, electric and LPG forklifts, as well as stackers and pallet trucks to its stable. KION Baoli is a brand of forklift trucks that was founded in China in 2003 and acquired in 2009 by Germany’s KION Group, the European market leader and the world’s second largest manufacturer of warehouse technology. In 2017, the KION Group went on to establish Baoli EMEA, a new organisation which replaced and expanded the previous Baoli structure in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, currently cov-ering 26 countries, but with the ambitious aim of covering 86 markets in the region in just a few years. In South Africa, the brand has benefitted

from Smith Power’s knowledge of the mar-ket, as well as the extended branch and dealer network. Smith Power has established itself as a reliable partner of choice with strong relationship build-ing and dedication to its customers. “We have proven to be a builder of German brands in South Africa,” says Eric Schultz, Finance and Operations Director for Smith Power Equipment. “OEMs come to us and we help them build and establish their brands within the relevant mar-kets.” We have a 30year track-record of establishing leading brands in the country. Some that come to mind include the likes of Toro, Kubota, Linhai and Club Car and Polaris, to mention a few. These are not necessarily German brands but they are leaders in their respective markets. In our stable we have three market leaders and one second-placed brand in the market,” adds Schultz. Success story The partnership with Baoli started in 2018. The brand has showed tremendous growth in South Africa. It recorded the biggest growth last year, despite the market challenges posed by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. In fact, it has doubled its market share in a space of a year. Schultz points out that key to the success of the brand are a number of factors, mainly the fa-vourable price points, great sales and aftersales support as well as the proven quality of the product. “The Baoli product is competitively priced in the market. The cost of ownership is also another competitive edge, buoyed by the quality and reliability of the product,” he says. The 1-year/ 1 000-hours warranty is testimony to the confidence in the product. This is com-plemented by Smith Power’s strong support structures. The Baoli brand has enjoyed a strong reach into the market through a 35-dealer strong network offered by Smith Power. The strong partnership between the OEM and the dealer has also been key to the success of the brand. “We have a

strong relationship with the OEM. They are working closely with us to grow market share. We get roundthe-clock flexibility in shipment of parts,” he says. Schultz believes that there is a lot of cultural similarities between the KION Group and Smith Power. The two companies, he says, share the same business ethics, passion for product, cus-tomer engagement and the desire to grow their respective businesses. The changing face of the market has in fact transformed the way OEMs interact with their dealers. Dealers have ceased to be just selling agents for OEMs; they have become valued business partners, trusted advisors to the OEM in all matters relating to aftermarket service, as well as crucial research and de-velopment projects. Schultz believes that it’s no longer just about parts availability and fulfilling maintenance obli-gations. Customisation is one of the top trends in today’s equipment business. Customisation means understanding what the end user’s needs are, and being able to modify the product or solution to meet the particular requirements. “Baoli is always willing to work with us around customer specific builds,” he says. Why South Africa? South Africa is a key market for

Baoli. “It is the gateway into Africa,” says Schultz. “The OEM sees South Africa as a vital part of its export markets, given the support structure that we can give into the neighbouring countries.” Schultz says South Africa is a key growth market in the materials handling space. “There is big scope for Baoli to continue gaining market share and penetrating into other markets such as warehousing and distribution. We also have our eyes on the island markets of Madagascar and Mauritius, where we see a lot of potential in materials handling,” he adds. Looking ahead, Schultz is targeting to establish the materials handling division as a major force within the Smith Power stable. “We want to further expand our sub-Saharan Africa footprint more aggressively. We also want to grow our rental fleet to meet customer needs, be it short-term or long-term rental,” he says. Although there is a big focus on the materials handling market, Schultz says the company is al-ways on the lookout to add more complimentary brands / products to its stable to expand its offering to the market.

Niftylift announces revolutionary green power generation The boffins at Niftylift have been hard at work looking for alternative power sources and they may well have solved the energy crisis with a new April Fuel. Businesses are no longer permitted to use Red Diesel to power heavy plant equipment. In preparation for this change, Niftylift boffins have been hard at work looking for alternative power sources for our market-leading

range of booms. So, it gives us great pleasure to officially announce that we may well have solved the energy crisis by introducing a revolutionary

new green power generation system! The process uses any water-based liquid and removes the hydrogen from its H2O molecules to power the Niftylift fuel cell. The best part is that the only by-product of the process is pure oxygen, which is then released straight into the atmosphere. The advantages of this process are immense as this could quite literally solve everything, and there is already talk of a Nobel Prize for Niftylift’s Science Division! To illustrate the effectiveness of the new process, Niftylift ‘geniuses’ ran a series of scientific tests. As you can see from the footage, our tests prove beyond a doubt, that water is the ‘new fuel’, and given the timing of this announcement, we’re calling it our ‘April Fuel’!

New ownership leads the way for new opportunities Cooper & Cooper, one of the country’s leading suppliers of mining, industrial, marine and engineering products and applications, has announced the securing of Level 1 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) following a private female ownership acquisition. Lifting Africa finds out more. Women are increasingly taking their rightful place in sectors that in the past have been considered maledominated. It is no different at Cooper & CooperGroup which now boasts 100% black ownership thanks to its CEO Lorato Mogaki. A well-known name in the mining industry Mogaki brings to the fold nearly two decades of experience in senior and executive-level positions in the mining industry guiding the Group onto a new path. “The empowerment of women in business is imperative,” says Katiso Mogaki, CI Analyst at CooperGroup. “We are seeing a definite shift in business with a move away from the notion that some industries are more suitable for men.” “Women are proving that they are as capable as their male counterparts no matter what the industry or sector.” With the acquisition now forming the core of its business model, CooperGroup is already experiencing the change as they charter this new course while 40

and grab the opportunity that has seen CooperGroup transform itself once again in 2022.

Previously only rating a BBBEE level 4 the change in ownership now boasts the business level 1 status. “This introduces a range of new opportunities,” says Mogaki.

Managing director Llewellyn Jonosky says the company’s unique offering lies in the basket of products it offers.

“It allows us access to new business opportunities that we previously would not have been able to bid on. It truly is an opportunity to grow our business.” Heralding in a new era Founded in 1897 as a grain merchant, the century-old CooperGroup has a rich and diverse history having evolved into a Motor Body Shop with the advent of the motor car, and establishing itself as one of the first-ever panel beaters in Johannesburg. The ability to identify gaps in the market has stood the business in good stead over the years and has seen it evolve time and time again. Nowadays a leading supplier of engineering, lifting and rigging equipment it is a business that has stood the test of time. It is also this same inherent ability to diversify

With the sole agency to distribute some of the leading international brands in the country and the African continent, the group has a wide range of engineering and marine products across its divisions. It has also established itself as a leading provider of lifting inspection services and has an extensive maintenance and service department under its umbrella. Considered a one-stop shop for its customers there is a major benefit in dealing directly with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) not only for the product but also for the testing thereof and any servicing and maintenance required. “In the mining sector in particular we are seeing this trend developing with the sector increasingly more likely to deal with the OEM than a middleman that comes with

Going forward Jonosky says with the new vision for the company following the Group’s acquisition growth is on the cards. This has seen the company employ additional staff.

“In Johannesburg and Cape Town we have increased our staff numbers,” said Jonosky.

“We are committed to meeting not only the local standards but the highest legal and international industry standards.” Cooper Group has several accreditations including being an ISO9001-2015 Dekraaccredited company.

The company has also recently opened an office in Rustenburg, an exciting development that is part of its growth strategy. It also has offices in Witbank, Secunda and Welkom. “Growing and diversifying our business is a top priority.” He says monthly targets are consistently being exceeded despite ongoing challenges in the mining sector highlighting that the Group’s diversification strategy is on course. “Mining will always be a core part of our business and we serve it well across a variety of commodities. New developments in Bobcat dealer network in Africa Bobcat has announced a number of new developments in the company’s Authorised Dealer network in Africa, with new appointments and other changes across the continent. New Authorised Dealers in Zimbabwe and Sudan As part of changes in the countries bordering South Africa, Bobcat has confirmed the appointment of Harare-based Machinery Exchange as the new Bobcat Authorised Dealer for Zimbabwe, effective 1st January 2022. Bobcat is aiming to make further dealer announcements in the near future for Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. In response to the opening up of

the market in Sudan, Bobcat has also appointed Khartoum-based Albadri Power Co. Ltd as the company’s new Authorised Dealer for the country, again effective from !st January 2022. Nicolas Dumont, District Sales Manager - Africa for Doosan Bobcat EMEA, said: “We have changed the way we operate in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia and Machinery Exchange is the first announcement we are making in

this respect, with more to follow. With Sudan being removed from sanctions lists, this opened the door to a new market for Bobcat, which is now the responsibility of Albadri Power Co. Ltd. Both appointments provide us with strong dealers in place to meet the local demand in these countries.” Commenting on the company’s new appointment, Antony Dube, National Sales and Rental Manager at Machinery Exchange, said: “Bobcat’s product range is diverse and provides customers with versatility on their job sites. With the Bobcat brand, Machinery Exchange aims to be a market leader in the backhoe and skidsteer loader markets in Zimbabwe.” “The most important Bobcat product in Zimbabwe is the backhoe loader because it is multifunctional, covering agriculture, construction, earthmoving and mining.” Mohamed El Badri, CEO of Albadri Power Co. Ltd, said: "We are honoured to represent Bobcat in

Successful First Year for New Authorised Dealer in Gabon At the end of 2020, Bobcat appointed Sodim TP, with headquarters in Libreville, as the new Authorised Dealer in Gabon. Sodim TP is a major player in construction equipment, trucks and in the automotive sector in Gabon. Nicolas Dumont added: “We are delighted with the impact Sodim TP has made as the new Authorised Dealer in Gabon. After only one year in the role, Sodim TP has succeeded in repositioning Bobcat as the market leader in compact equipment in Gabon, with a market share of over 20% in 2021.” Julien Canh, Director General of Sodim TP, commented: “Sodim TP is a leading company in Gabon, specializing in public works equipment, mining machinery and forestry machinery. With Bobcat, Sodim TP has had the opportunity to expand its range and thus offer its customers compact construction machinery for the first time. We aim to continue to be Number 1 in the compact segment. One new market for us is in the cleaning sector in large cities.” “We have already delivered the first sweepers intended for cleaning the streets and sidewalks of our capital, Libreville.” Reactivating Existing Dealers Bobcat has also reactivated the following dealers: Rock Plant, with offices in Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam and Kampala serving Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, respectively; Douala-based Speed Appro for Cameroon; Chanic, with branches in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tunis-based CME for Tunisia.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Sudan, this partnership will surely add a huge value to the company with Bobcat being the global market leader for the compact equipment industry. We believe customer service is the tip of the spear in the sales process. So we have heavily invested in the aftersales service department as the highest priority for our business. We have also sited maintenance teams in different regions of Sudan, to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction."

Typical of the excitement shared by the reactivated dealers is Pritpal Roopra, Managing Director of Rock Plant, who commented: “With Bobcat we have an additional utility line and thereby an increased customer base, especially in the compact construction sector. We were appointed just before the pandemic, but even with the problems caused by Covid, the fact that Bobcat machines are known worldwide for their excellent reputation, it has not proved difficult to promote the line to our existing clientele. We are also not new to Bobcat, in the past having worked on Bobcat machines for our existing customers using the highly trained team in our workshops. For any additional information/training we have relied on Teams and Zoom sessions like the rest of the world during the pandemic.” Nicolas Dumont continued: “With all these changes, the Bobcat network for Africa now comprises 19 dealers, officially covering 22 countries. Algeria remains a top priority and we are actively working behind the scenes and making ourselves ready to re-enter this market with a leading Algerian company. “As mentioned above, we will be making further announcements in Southern Africa, where we are exploring our options with high potential especially in the Backhoe Loader segment.” “West Africa is another area full of potential with the mining sector on one hand, and many infrastructure projects in the area on the other. We are in advanced talks with

companies offering a multi-country presence in this part of Africa.” Impact of Covid-19 and Supply Chain Issues Like in most parts of the world, Covid-19 impacted demand in Africa, with the industry declining by 23.6% in 2020. However, with all the efforts made to reactivate various dealers and to enter new markets, Bobcat sales were less affected and even though sales volumes declined slightly, Bobcat managed to grow its market share in 2020. Bobcat spent much of 2021 dealing with supply chain issues caused by logistics problems worldwide, including the lack of containers and fewer ships visiting Africa, but the situation continues to stabilise. On top of developing the dealer network in Africa, Bobcat has also added many new products over the last two years as part of the company’s Next is Now programme, including Backhoe Loaders, Small Articulated Loaders and Light Compaction. Backhoe loaders, in particular, are in high demand in the region, as they account for 67% of the compact industry in Africa. Nicolas Dumont commented: “We closed 2021 with a record number of orders for Africa and this, combined with the ongoing development of the dealer network, provides us with plenty of optimism for further growth in the African market in the coming years.”
