Hello Ipswich! No, you haven’t missed a beat, it really is November and the penultimate issue of LifeStyle Queensland for 2019. This month we shine a spotlight on Ipswich legend Ash Barty who has made history by taking out the top spot in the world of womens tennis- amazing work Ash! Meanwhile, Elizabeth Shearer from Brassall is taking her art global as she gears up to take her one-woman show on the festival circuit. Another group of legends making history is the McAully Smash Repairs Group who are spending November celebrating their 60th year of serving the Ipswich community. As the weather warms up we’ve let you in on the best summer secret, linen, and have provided you with the perfect tart recipe to take to your next barbecue. The Fruit Ricotta Tart recipe is courtesy of Sydney dessert queen Charlotte Ree, and you can find her interview inside. In Defence news the Air Force ‘Roulettes’ stunned spectators with some fancy flight work at the Australian Grand Prix (make sure to check out the video on our website). And there was a win in Parliament as a new Veterans Convenant has outlined greater support for military veterans and their families. Phew! That’s November covered and the count down to Christmas is on.

Luciana

Elizabeth Shearer - “Bite Me But Smile” Elizabeth Shearer is a musician from Brassall Ipswich, who is due to present her one-woman show ‘Bite Me But Smile’ as part of the Wonderland Festival, that is playing at the Powerhouse throughout November. Shearer stars as Miss Zella Shear, a 20-something-yearold singleton singer, in a world of trending hashtags, lacking an understanding of personal boundaries, who wants to do it all: opera, jazz, pop and burlesque, all the while constantly on the lookout for potential dates and audience appreciation. Shearer describes ‘Bite Me But Smile’ as a topical absurdist cabaret show that is both a personal journey and a commentary on a narcissistic society, addicted to social media and validation. Featuring risqué reveals, mechanical stimuli, musical mayhem and a judgmental talking kebab, it’s a multilayered visual experience that draws the audience in and makes them question their role in a world that seems to increasingly value shallow attention over meaningful interactions. Shearer explains, “At an 2

underlying level ‘Bite Me But Smile’ explores smiling depression and the influence social media can have on our perspective of reality and happiness. Provoking questions such as “What is the truth behind a selfie?”, “how is a wolf whistle different to an Instagram like?” and “would I rather followers or friends?” Despite writing and performing her own one-woman show by her 20s, Shearer didn’t take the

straight path to fringe festivals. After graduating from Ipswich Girls Grammar she trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, completing a Bachelor of Music Performance, majoring in Classical Voice. She says it was only after moving to the United Kingdom that she began to realise how many musical places she could take her skills. “I always knew I wanted to perform, it just took some

exploration time to find out where. I love the grand theatrical and dramatic nature of opera, mixed with the incredible musical and vocal ability required. When I moved to London in 2013, I felt the desire to explore alternative artistic art forms. It was through this exploration that I entered the world of Fringe Festivals, a medium where in I would continue to develop my theatrical cabaret style.” While Shearer admits there are certainly challenges to presenting a one-woman show, she relishes the experience. “The benefit is that I can form connections with my audience. It’s really special when at the end of a show, I feel like the audience has gone on this crazy journey with me. It’s a great feeling.” Her work has proved highly successful and has since taken her through Scotland, Australia and the UK writing and performing in various venues and renowned festivals. Bite Me But Smile will be playing for the first time in Australia for the Wonderland festival and Shearer is working on taking it to the coveted Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2020.

STAR CHAT

Ash Barty - Ipswich’s Number One v with Luciana

Ipswich’s own tennis champion Ash Barty has had an astonishing year on and off the tennis court, having added four new accolades to her name: the WTA Finals champion, the Don Award, the Women in Sport Moment of the Year Award, and now Australian Sportsperson of the Year Award. In her latest triumph on the court, Barty took out defending champion Elina Svitolina 6-4 and 6-3 to win the Womens Tennis Association Finals in China, taking home the champion’s trophy and a prize money cheque for US$6.4 million, the largest for a women’s singles event in the sport’s history. This latest win makes Barty the first world Number One player to win the Finals since Serena Williams five years ago, and the first Australian to win it since 1976. Upon accepting the award, Barty spoke with reverence about the coveted title. “It’s been the most incredible year for me. It’s been an incredible new era in women’s tennis and to play in front of this spectacular crowd has been amazing. The biggest thing, it’s been a growth of women’s sport.” Barty also remarked on how her achievements are indicative of the growing support for women’s tennis, which has come so far since the establishment of the WTA in 1973. “It’s more of kind of a general progression of putting our sport more on the map. “We have the most beautiful sport, it’s a global sport. Now we’re getting more attention. I feel like we’ve earned that.” The Finals secures a WTA tour record marked with success from the beginning but now positioned as the top ranked player in women’s tennis as well as breaking through the $10 million prize money bracket prior to the Finals. With that win Barty is now the highest money winner on tour. Barty is a branding dream, working tirelessly to promote Australia’s sporting image. She is the National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia and has just secured a lucrative third year sponsorship deal with Vegemite.

It’s been a hugely successful year for Ipswich’s golden girl and if this upwards trajectory is anything to go by, she’s just getting started. Barty, who hails from Springfield, began playing when she was four years old and by 16 was playing national and international tennis. In 2014 she took a break and moved into cricket, joining the Brisbane Heat for the Women’s Big Bash League despite having no prior cricketing experience. Her move back to tennis three years ago was a huge success when she won French Open, securing her place as a champion in the sport. As well as being a highly talented and hardworking player, Barty is renowned for her down-to-earth personality and good-natured sporting spirit. She says she gained this insight from her parents and her first coach, Jim Joyce. “My parents taught me that being a good person is the most important thing in life, I try and live by that every day,” Barty said. “When I started playing tennis, my coach Jim Joyce had four ‘rules’ – be a nice person, respect people and be respected, have fun and if you can play tennis that’s a bonus – these are still with me today.” Despite the disappointment of losing the final of the Wunan Open in China earlier this year, Barty retains a charmingly up-beat and positive outlook. “At the end of the day tennis is a game and it is meant to be fun. I try to walk away with a smile even after a tough day.” The WTA Shenzen tour concludes in November and although she is now reigning champion, Barty has said she still has plans before the end of the year and goals to kick before she can relax. “The perfect way for me to finish 2019 would be with a win representing Australia in the Fed Cup, then I’ll be ready to celebrate.”

COMMUNITY

Charlotte Ree - Cake chef extraordinaire Renowned cake chef Charlotte Ree has released her new cookbook “Just Desserts” showcasing 30 of her most popular recipes, presenting a treasure trove of sweet treats, each designed to be whipped up with ease.

LifeStyleQ: How does ‘Just Desserts’ differ from your first e-cookbook, ‘Bakeree’? Charlotte: They are both dessert focused but for me a big part of baking is that it’s time to unwind and not be on my screen, and an e-book didn’t allow that. You can touch it and feel it and get cocoa powder all over it and not have to worry. LQ: Is this for people who love sweets or who need a little encouragement? CR: I think it’s both. It could be for the dessert lover in your life, even if that’s you. But it’s really for anyone who loves sweet treats and loves the idea of baking but who think it’s out of their reach. It’s there to inspire people to bake. LQ: Why do you focus on ‘getting back to basics’? CR: To show people how accessible baking can be. You pick up one bowl and a whisk and in 45 minutes you have a cake fresh out of the oven. One of the cakes for example, you just throw some chocolate covered pretzels on top and it looks beautiful, another one just a light dusting of icing sugar. They’re rustic but are the sort of cakes you think, “oh, man I want to eat that again.” LQ: What is your no fail technique or ingredient? CR: Having butter, eggs, flour, sugar and vanilla extract, you can bake anything with those things by your side. Always make sure your pan is greased! Having your ingredients room

temperature will give you perfect whip. Cracking eggs into a bowl rather than into the batter and baking something that you like to eat. That’s key. LQ: Is there an ingredient you would never use? CR: I get messages from people all the time asking about my gluten free or vegan recipes. I have a recipe in the book for a dairy free olive oil cake, which is amazing but that’s as far as I’m going to go. I love butter, I love carbs. . I’m never going to not bake with dairy. LQ: Do you have a dessert that you eat every day? CR: I love ice cream, I eat it every day. I’ve tried to make it but there are some things that others do really well and you can get it for ten bucks.

LQ: What’s your favourite food place in the world? CR: Italy... if I’m going for savoury but Paris is where I go for desserts. The ingredients for croissants, like beautiful French butter, they do it so well. Paris is my magical city for sweets. LQ: Do you have a baking process? CR: I bake at two am with classical music playing because it helps me distress. There is something so beautiful about it that I feel like a new human when I’m finished. I love the style. LQ: What are your tricks for styling? CR: It’s about pairing it back. I don’t have plates, cutlery or napkins.Just the cake that I’ve made. LQ: If you wanted to create a masterpiece for a special occasion, what would you present? CR: I would make a layered pavlova, which is in the book. I love pavlova, it’s such a crowd pleaser. You can make that beautifully, no matter what the season of the fruit, and make it look really decadent and delicious. Electronic conveyancing with PEXA MOVING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY WITH ELECTRONIC SETTLEMENTS

Earlier this year, McNamara Law became PEXA (Property Exchange Australia) proficient. ‘PEXA’ is the only Electronic Lodgement Network (ELN) and national online conveyancing system in Australia. PEXA’s abilities include: - preparation of all electronic conveyancing documentation; the verification and acceptance of documentation for lodgement; - electronic settlement of real property transactions including payment of settlement monies, duties, taxes and any other disbursements; and - electronic lodgement of dealings to the Land Register. PEXA is supporting the Australian property industry as it transitions towards 100 per cent digital conveyancing, ensuring your property settlement is completed fast, efficient and safe for you. Electronic conveyancing is more secure, more accurate and has a much faster turnaround. Sellers receive their sale proceeds and buyers are recorded on the Title for the property within two hours of settlement, in most cases. New South Wales has moved to mandatory electronic settlements, and it won’t be long before Queensland follows suit. 2

LifeStyle | November 2019

McNamara Law’s conveyancing team have successfully completed numerous electronic conveyances and have confidently adopted PEXA electronic conveyancing. Recently, Sally Adams, our Strata Title Officer, was one of eight Queenslanders to travel to Melbourne with PEXA. Sally attended PEXA’s open day and a behind the scenes tour of the headquarters to learn more about PEXA’s upcoming releases such as: - PEXAKey, an app that clients can download to their phones to securely provide instructions and keep track of their settlement. This improves your conveyancing experience and keeps you more involved in the process; and - PEXAPlus, which ensures integration of PEXA with our firm’s Practice Management System, making the process run even smoother for you, the client. If you would like to know more about PEXA or would like us to perform your next conveyance through the PEXA platform call Sally (Ipswich), Cheryl (Ipswich), Aleisha (Springfield) or Michele (Gatton) who will be more than happy to help you with your PEXA (Electronic) settlement. Fresh linen look for Spring ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF FABRICS... FOR WORK, RELAXING AND PLAY v with Luciana

Spring is about to turn into Summer, the jacarandas are blossoming and your social calendar should be starting to fill out right about now. If you’re looking to your wardrobe for inspiration, you should be reaching for linen. The beautiful flax fabric has had an enthusiastic revival lately and with good reason. Oozing elegance, breathable, allergy-free, sustainable and fashionable, linen been worn throughout the centuries. Here’s how you can wear it, anywhere and to most occasions. PARTY TIME

Linen is your party friend! No longer does casual linen have to be associated with cream pants on the beach. Taking a line from the international 2019 fashion week lines, retailers everywhere are branching out into linen party dresses, blouses, adorable skirts and pants. Pairing a linen sundress with sandals is perfect for a picnic, which you can then transition into heels for heading out. Sweet belts cinching in a linen waist mean you can embrace the baggy flow but skip the sack look. Wrap dresses offer a beautiful European feel and can be dressed up elegantly for weddings and celebrations. If you’re wearing separates, keep the linen to either the top or bottom as the sturdiness of the material can sometimes deliver a boxed look.

WORK TIME

Linen work pants can be some of the most flattering and highly comfortable options for office wear but if you’re opting for them in the lighter colours, the wrinkles can begin to show. While linen wrinkles are a fact of life you should just love and embrace, they may not work for you. Choose garments that are less prone to creases, like dresses or

linen jackets that will pull together any ensemble. High waisted linen skirts with built in statement belts are now work-worthy, released in gorgeous earthy mustards, russets, rouges and creams.

LOUNGE TIME

You don’t have to be heading out to reap the benefits of this flax fantastic. Adding a few pairs of well fitted linen shorts, comfy drawstring joggers, long jumpsuits or dropped waist midi dresses will keep you cool all summer long and definitely presentable if those errands come calling!

KEEP IT FRESH

Linen may be essentially magic but it is still fallible and needs to be taken care of. Excessive sweat, wrong wash temperatures and weird creasing will keep your clothes from looking crisp. Rules for linen: • Send suits and blazers to the dry cleaner but wash everything else on a cold gentle cycle. • Use only gentle detergent and NEVER fabric softener or bleach. • To keep it crispy as possible, iron while damp and then spray starch onto the parts that tend to crease.

McAully Smash Repairs CELEBRATING 60 YEARS IN BUSINESS IN IPSWICH

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY | QUALITY WORKMANSHIP | EXPERT REPAIRERS

Innovation and service key to business success Graham McAully, owner and managing director of McAully Smash Repairs Group, attributes the ongoing success in his automotive repair business to being ahead of the competition with technology, efficient work practices and exceeding customer expectations, enabling a high level of referrals and return work.

Workshop in the 1960s

“We were the first in Queensland to install a Low Bake Oven back in 1980 to give a factory finish to the paint job,” Graham said. “It was pretty expensive back then, about $45,000, and people thought I was mad to have a drying oven in the Sunshine State, now just about every repairer has one. We were also the first to use the Glasurit paint system from Germany, so we have kept pace with technology, enabling us to do the best job we can. “Good old fashioned service goes a long way as well: being honest with people about each job, good and bad, satisfying each customer’s expectations, and meeting timelines for job completion.” McAully’s must be doing something right. The business has expanded year-on-year, and they are a preferred repairer for insurance companies. “We also concentrate on training our staff on latest techniques, and one of our apprentices is in the top three in the state, which is an important indicator of where we want to be,” Graham said.

MCAULLY SMASH REPAIRS - 6OTH ANNIVERSARY

The increased focus on vocational training producing more trades people is welcomed. “We need to train and retain more apprentices in trades because the industry needs it so badly,” Graham said. Businesses such as McAully’s are regarded as the mainstay of small business in Ipswich, and are strongly supported by the Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard who said, “I think it’s important, especially during this period of transition for Ipswich, that we recognise the generations of investment in the city and celebrate businesses such as McAully’s that have succeeded as a quality business and have earned great respect locally.”

History

John (Macca) McAully founded the business in 1959 as J.A. McAully and Co having served his apprenticeship in Boonah. He worked at Don Faulkner Motors as an automotive painter in the 1950s then decided it was time to go it alone. “He started with two tradesmen and one apprentice and concentrated on painting, with Don Smith as his first tradesman and Wayne McQueen as his first apprentice,” Graham said.

“My mother Marie was the first employee, who did a lot of the masking , ‘fiddly’ jobs and looking after the office as well.” Graham joined his father in the firm in 1970. In his words, “Growing up, I liked painting pushbikes and all sorts of things, so I left school as soon as I could to join the business, leaving school one Friday and started here on Monday. “As the years went by we bought the joinery next door and expanded into panel beating, and the business became panel and paint.” From apprentice to a management role over the next decade, Graham formed the McAully Group and became Managing Director. Strong leadership and commitment to excellence has enabled the McAully Group to become an industry leader and a trusted name in the Ipswich region. “We are firmly committed to sustainable growth through customer service, investment in our people, innovation and quality workmanship,” Graham said. Installing the Low Bake Oven nearly 30 years ago is seen as pivotal to the history and future of McAully’s. “Once the spray and baking booths were installed the improvement was instant,” Graham said. “This enabled a faster turnaround and a higher standard of completed work, which gave the customer a factory like finish.”

work now carried out at the Raceview location. “Our business now faces three streets and is more than 3500 square metres in area, and we have the capacity to turn out 50 cars a week, depending on the extent of repairs.” The expansion into a Window Tint division for motor vehicles, homes and offices complements the core smash repairs side of the business, as well as a fast track (small repairs) division. With success there’s no complacency, and Graham impresses on staff that continued business success depends on customer satisfaction. “We don’t take anything for granted,” he said. “We continue to work hard, evolve the business and focus on exceeding customer expectations.” As another measure of the high esteem held within the industry, insurance companies and manufacturer appraisers often acknowledge the high quality of the work and service at McAully’s. The business ethic also includes being environmentally conscious, using the latest fully automatic GYSpot welding system, LEAN work practices and Glasurit 90 Line waterborne paints.

McAully Group Today

The business today is an evolution of sound business practices and continued excellence established over past decades, encapsulated in McAully’s mission statement: “We ensure we evolve with technology and continue to provide the finest customer service.” McAully’s has grown in terms of facilities and

Motivation

Graham has a strong commitment to his staff, recognising they are critical to the success of his business. He has 27 staff, which includes trades people, administration, management and other support staff. “The entire team takes pride in ‘getting it right first time’,” he said. “We have a program of continuous improvement in the quality of our work and our work practices.” All repairs and paintwork are carried out by qualified trades people who have undergone a stringent training program. “People new to McAully’s, even qualified trades people, also undergo in-house training to ensure they are aware of the standards we require,” Graham said. This attitude to ‘getting it right first time’ has certainly paid off in terms of increased business, with 70 per cent repeat business and 30 per cent referrals from others.

This approach, combined with Graham’s leadership has taken McAully’s from strength to strength over many years. “We are grateful to the Ipswich community and honoured to have achieved this milestone of 60 years and we are committed to continuing the high standard we have set for ourselves in workmanship, trust and customer care.

McAully painter may win Apprentice of the Year Local boy Reece Haslam (pictured) has been an apprentice at McAully’s Smash Repairs for two and a half years and his hard work has truly paid off. Reece is in the running to win the 2019 Apprenticeship of the Year, a coveted prize awarded to apprentices in training who have displayed excellence and enterprise in their field. Reece was nominated by his trainer from the Motor Trade Association Queensland where he has been training. Reece’s speciality is re-finishing and it’s in this category he hopes to take home the prize. Re-finishing is a crucial step in automotive preparation, preparing the surface for an exact colour matched coat. The award would go a long way to making his dream come true of becoming a fully fledged tradesman once his apprenticeship is complete in eight month’s time. The winner will be announced on November 16.

Bringing the Office of Veterans to Ipswich Queensland’s new Office for Veterans will be based in Ipswich.

The office will coordinate veterans’ matter across the state government. It is just one of the ways the Palaszczuk Government is supporting our great city. On behalf of the Queensland Government and the people of Ipswich I want to congratulate McAully Smash Repairs for 60 years of business. Ipswich really is a great city for doing business.

Lawn care during Spring v with Matt Leacy, Landart Landscapes “Lawns tend to be one of the more neglected areas of the garden over winter,” says Matt. “Luckily, spring is one of the best times to get lawns looking lush and green again.” “The key steps for spring lawn care include removing thatch and also aerating the lawn to help get water and nutrients through to the turf zone,” Matt says. “If you’re working with a big lawn, you might look at using a mortised aerator. Otherwise, you can use spiked aerator shoes or a simple garden fork.” “But beware of cutting into any irrigation lines running beneath the lawn, as this can be a very expensive mistake to rectify,” Matt cautions. “Once you’ve removed thatch and aerated, add some course sand or top dressing over the lawn – and don’t forget to fertilise with something high in nitrogen, and preferably organic,” says Matt.

“In terms of watering, I recommend giving lawns a deep soaking at least two times a week, keeping in mind any water restrictions that may exist in your area,” adds Matt. “This may change depending on weather conditions, but as a general rule-of-thumb, it’s best to give lawns two solid drenches as opposed to five light sprinklings.” “If you’re looking to establish a new lawn from scratch, I’d opt for something hardy and droughttolerant,” says Matt. “Buffalo Grasses, such as Sapphire or Sir Walter are often good choices,” Matt says. They tend to cope better than other types of grasses with minimal water – and they bounce back pretty quickly after rainfall or watering.” “Sir Walter and Sapphire tolerate more physical traffic than most grasses, so they’re a good choice for families with kids and pets.”

DEFENCE NEWS IN BRIEF

Roulettes impress with PC-21

No 1 Squadron held a Wings ‘n’ Wheels themed family day at RAAF Base Amberley recently, to enable squadron members and their families to relax after a sustained high-performance year graduating Fighter Combat Instructors, training F/A-18F Super Hornet pilots and Weapon System Officers and participating in a number of Defence exercises and operations. Photo: Squadron Leader Grant, shows his wife, Suzie and son, Ezckiel around the squadron.

Two Pilatus PC-9/A(F) aircraft fly over Sydney Harbour during their final ferry flight to RAAF Base Wagga where they will be retired. No 4 Squadron utilised the four modified PC-9/A Forward Air Control variant aircraft in grey paintwork, fitted with smoke grenade dispensers for the training and development of Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, and the maintenance of an operational role providing Forward Air Controllers who liaise with ground elements to provide Close Air Support (CAS). The PC-9A is to be replaced with the PC-21.

Defence Plan Jericho has introduced Ai-Search – an artificial intelligence (Ai) prototype – to transform airborne search and rescue by way of using a detector on an aircraft to enhance search and rescue (SAR). Wing Commander Michael Gan said the idea was to train a machine-learning algorithm and Ai sensors to complement existing visual search techniques. Jericho enlisted the help of Lieutenant Harry Hubbert of Warfare Innovation Navy Branch to find an orange hull in a large body of water, using Ai, in a month. Lieutenant Hubbert developed the algorithms in two weeks.“ The trial was carried out onboard at C-27J ‘Spartan’ aircraft from No 35 Squadron. (Defence Photos) 16

Fans at the recent Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix turned their eyes to the sky as the Roulettes performed their first full-formation display in the new PC-21 aircraft. Lead Roulette Squadron Leader Jay Tuffley said the hard work paid off for his team, with the six-ship, 15-minute display the highlight if the pre-race entertainment. “We’ve been working for months to produce a great show in the new aircraft. I’m proud of my team’s achievement,” Squadron Leader Tuffley said.

“The PC-21 aircraft and its training systems will modernise Air Force aviation training and strengthen Australian Defence Force pilot training capability for years to come.” The Roulettes have converted to the PC-21 from the PC-9/A aircraft, and have commenced their first public flying season in the new aircraft. Air Force took delivery of 49 PC-21s, for initial pilot training.

Covenant recognises unique nature of military service The Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann has welcomed the passage through the Parliament of the Australian Defence Veterans’ Covenant. Mr Neumann said the legislation provides a framework for government, business and the community to recognise the unique nature of military service and support veterans and their families. “This recognises the immense commitment our armed forces make to serve their country, and formalises our nation’s commitment to look after those who have sacrificed for our nation, Mr Neumann said. The Covenant is similar to the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces Covenant, a principles-based document, which promises that those who serve or have served in

the armed forces and their families will be treated fairly. “Australians who serve in our armed forces can require specialised health and social services assistance. The Covenant will make sure those needs don’t slip through the cracks,” Mr Neumann said. “This new covenant represents a bipartisan approach to support those who have served our country.” While the Covenant is largely symbolic in nature, it will deliver tangible benefits for veterans as well. It includes a Veteran Card, which will provide access to discounts, and benefits from participating businesses. Mr Neumann has been a strong advocate for Defence personnel and their families.

Vaccinate your kids - no excuses! A recent outbreak of measles throughout Queensland has prompted warnings to not just parents of children, but everyone to get vaccinated. That is the message West Moreton Public Health Physician Dr Catherine Quagliotto is urging community members to hear. “This year we have seen a spike in measles cases across Australia,” Dr Quagliotto said. “In Queensland alone there have been 24 confirmed measles cases in the last month. “The best way people can protect themselves is to get vaccinated. “It’s a quick process but it can be a life saver. “Measles is a serious illness – it can land you in hospital and there’s the possibility of fatal complications such as pneumonia and brain inflammation.” The measles virus is highly infectious and can spread easily between people within a matter of days. Measles symptoms can present in a number of ways including fever, lethargy, running nose, dry cough, sore and infected eyes, general feelings of illness and a nonitchy rash that can begin at the face or hairline and quickly spreads to the rest of the body. The tell tale rash usually lasts about one week. The latest cases are thought

to have been brought in from people travelling overseas, and Dr Quagliotto encourages those that are intending to travel to undergo the vaccinations. “When travelling to another country there may be a number of vaccine-preventable diseases that you are at risk of contracting,” Queensland Health recommends anyone who has not had two documented doses of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine or had proven measles, to visit their doctor to get vaccinated. For anyone born during or since 1966 the vaccine is free. For more information on measles visit the Queensland Health website or contact 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) any time, any day.

What we are reading: ‘BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD’

v with Luciana

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a fantasy novel that explores how a person could use time travel to change their lives. You meet four characters, each with their own sentimental longings, regrets, curiosities and needs who visit an ancient café in the heart of Tokyo which has become famous for its ability to transfer customers back in time. The only issue is that there are stringent rules dictating a trip back; you can only sit in one special chair, you mustn’t get up from it, you must accept that you cannot change the present, and there is a time limit, in that you must drink the coffee before it gets cold lest you risk turning into a ghost who may never leave the tiny café. It’s a sweet premise and an idea that many of us have wished for, to go back and make amends or see someone one last time. It’s unfortunate that a lot of nuance of the story perhaps got lost in translation and the result

are a campy, often times clunky set of passages that are doomed to repeat. While this can become frustrating, it’s testament to the thrilling idea the book circulates on that a patient reader will do their best to ignore the juvenile phrasing just to see what happens in the end. The real gift of this novel is how it lets the reader ruminate on their own choices and spurs the imagination, leaving you dreaming of all the things you would do if such a thing really existed. The mysticism of Japanese magic realism paired perfectly your own imaginings, allows you to escape your train ride, work break or noisy café and opens the door on a world of wild opportunities.

TAP’D

TIM RULE | PA HOTEL

Have you tried a good Sour beer? A good sour beer is like that friend who gets along with everyone. Beer geeks love the layers of flavours in a sour, while people who don’t like beer love that it doesn’t quite taste like a typical beer. The style was once hard to find but sours are now easy to find. Still, many people are not familiar with sours. Sour beer is the oldest type of beer in history. Nearly all beer used to be at least somewhat sour before pasteurisation and sterilisation was understood. Sours today are tarttasting, made with wild bacteria and yeasts. Bacteria gives sour beers a distinctive taste while yeast adds the funky and earthy quality. Tap’d Craft Beer Bar at the PA Hotel has four beer taps dedicated to sour beers this summer: Currumbin Valley’s Mango Sour with Lemon Myrtle. A whopping 84kg of Kensington Pride mango goes in to make this beer. The lemon myrtle is there to support the flavour experience, not to overpower it. The mango dominates and the lemon myrtle brings a subtle, light citrus zing to the sourness.

Next is Newstead’s The Doors of Perception Dark Fruit Sour. Pouring a rich, deep mulberry colour with a slightly pink head, this boysenberry, mulberry and blackcurrant fruit sour has an aroma of jammy berries. It’s also packing a berry punch, with raspberry, blackberry, red and blackcurrant and mulberry notes, plus a citric tang. Ballistic’s Red Papaya Sour is a zingy sour drop with a fresh finish. Made from locally sourced Red Papaya you’ll be transported to a tropical getaway. It’s the same base recipe as their Twang Kettle Sour Ales, utilising a new fruit. Finally, Brooklyn’s Bel-Air Sour has a smack of tartness that opens onto a hit of tropical fruit, courtesy of Brooklyn’s lacto bacteria, their ale yeast and a generous helping of Amarillo dry-hopping. Soft barley malts and wheat keep things dry and refreshing like a blend of Champagne, hops, and pineapple. These sour beers will be available at Tap’d this month as well as other great beers. Check them out!

Cheers, Tim

A decade since the cult hit comedy classic Zombieland set a new precedent for zombie centric entertainment, original director Ruben Fleischer and writers Rhett Rheese & Paul Wernick have arrived at their long awaited sequel Zombieland: Double Tap. Reuniting Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin and Emma Stone to reprise their roles, ten years proves just the right brewing time for a film not only worth the wait, but just as good as the first. Experts at identifying and killing various types of zombies following the events of the first film, the abandoned White House is now home to Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and Little Rock. When Wichita fears she is too attached to Columbus and Little Rock feels Tallahassee still treats her like a child, a rift in the makeshift family sets the team apart on a cross country journey across the zombie-fied remains of America. Encountering fellow postapocalyptic survivors along the way and finding themselves up against smarter, faster and seemingly unkillable zombies, they’re going to need more than weapons and wit to continue surviving. Featuring Rosario Dawson, Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleditch as new cast additions and the hilarious Zoey Deutchin in a standout role as a stereo-typical Californian valley girl who has survived Zombieland by living in a mall freezer the last ten years, Columbus’ ever growing set of rules continues to grow as do the zombies hunt for human flesh. Recapturing the spirit of the 2009 original as we revisit hilariously likeable characters in a reunion of sorts, Zombieland 2 brings the laughs, the action and of course, more zombies in a movie that’s pure fun. Heightened by the charm of its four leads and the chemistry they share on screen, here’s one comedy sequel that gets it right. If tradition follows and we get a third in 2029, let the fun continue but until the be sure to stay during the credits and welcome to Zombieland. Again.

2/5 Stars Reprising iconic roles alongside each other for the first time since 1991, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger star in Terminator: Dark Fate, the third attempt at rebooting a dead franchise. It’s dubbed “the true sequel” to 1984’s The Terminator and 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) and featuring the return of original creator James Cameron as producer, what was promised as the real deal proper version of a Terminator 3 is nothing more than a lie to get you in the door. Yet again another disappointing mess of a film making you question why they’ve even bothered flogging a dead horse for the umpteenth time, not even the ever so likeable Arnold and his one liners can save this from being an incredibly forgettable entry in a series that should have ended on its high note Pretending 2003’s Terminator: Rise of the Machines, 2009’s Terminator: Salvationand 2015’s Terminator: Genisys never happened, the stage was set for the return of Sarah Connor to be one for the ages, instead we get a film that barely works as a generic action film. Recycling the plot from T2 with less interesting characters and featuring several questionable visual effects alongside a very average story, big fans of the two original films are going to be pissed off, especially considering this is supposed to be THE continuation. As cool as it is to see Hamilton return as the bad-ass Sarah Connor, mercilessly hunting down Terminators one by one, here she takes a backseat with little to do in favour of a ridiculous plot, essentially making her character redundant and only having Arnie show up for the last hour so they can slap his face on the poster Stupidly green-screened to the max with the groundbreaking 1991 special effects still looking so much better than this glossy cartoon, they’re are some funny lines and a few nice action scenes, but as the Terminator film you were promised, this falls very, very short. You won’t be back. 2/5 STARS

Making Serious Bank

Heat magazine have released their annual richest Brits under 30 list and this year it may come as no surprise that singing boy-wonder Ed Sheeran has taken out the top spot. Sheeran is reportedly worth over three hundred million, a huge hunk of which came from his Divide tour (nearly $1124 million). He only managed to nab the top spot as Adele turned 31 last May. Following close behind him was Daniel Radcliffe who is still managing to pull in the dollars from Harry Potter despite the first movie being released nearly two decades ago. Harry Styles of course came in number 3 and, thanks to a successful solo career is now worth a whopping $64 million. While it is usually singers and actors who line the ranks of the richest, this years list included reality TV star Amber Gill from Love Island who clocked in at number 23 due to her popularity and endorsement deals.

Kevin Hart has released photos of his long and gruelling recovery after his devestating car crash in September. Hart’s car which was driven by a friend, drove into a ravine, crushing him and the driver and leaving the vehicle unrecognisable. Hart suffered a severe back injury and doctors say he will be unable to walk for another year. The photos show him being assisted by nurses with a walker to stand. The comedian will reportedly not sue the driver, friend Jared Black who was driving the 1970 Plymouth. However, Black who also sustained serious injuries may still sue Hart for not equipping the car with proper seatbelts.

Not Appy’ Bout It

The celebrity facial recognition application ‘Gradient’ has received celebrity endorsement from the likes of the Kardashians after its release in early October. However, computer news security website Naked by Sophos ran tests with the app that matched brown carpet to Morgan Freeman, and various program icons to Beckham, James Madison, Vanessa Hudgens and Aldous Huxley. As the author Paul Ducklin pointed out, while it may seem like harmless fun it is strange that the company behind Gradient has poured massive amounts into marketing, for what seems to be a useless app. While questions around the safety of facial recognition are enough of a concern, it seems the sneaky pricing is the devil in disguise. Signing up for a free trial could have you paying $20 a month for an app to tell you you’re a dead ringer for carpet, so it’s probably best to steer clear of this one...

STAR LAURA BROWN Laura Brown is the fashion editor of inStyle Magazine in the US and was this year named the Australian Fashion Laureate, the highest honour in Australian fashion. With bomb credentials like working in Details, W and Harper’s Bazaar- she’s a lady to celebrate and take a tip from. Her approach is marked by creativity, a down-toearth personality, a feminist lens and inclusivity. It’s refreshing to hear one of the most influential women in fashion admit that ultimately, she goes with her gut when it comes to developing style and what is authentically you, is the best thing to wear.

The few loose rules she attends to, lets her move freely through influences and inspirations and is ultimately why she continues to reside at the head of the game. Brown has said in the past that she best channels her style through the combination of high and low style. On any good day she’ll choose jeans and T-shirt but her time in New York has taught her that a pair of heels and blazer can take you anywhere. In fact, the only real piece of solid fashion advice Brown seems to put out is invest in several pairs of shoes and you can get away with anything. Brown has an acutely artistic eye and a talent for setting the scene. Small touches like scarfs, belts and shoes draw the focus and compliment sweetly. In her clothes she brings together refined touches- intense flashes of colour, beautifully colliding lines and high art prints to combine into humble stunners.
