Merry Christmas Ipswich! December is finally upon us and what a wonderful year it has been. Ipswich has seen some massive changes and the new year hopes to be one where those changes develop into positive and lasting foundations that will see the growing city prosper. In this final edition for 2019 we have worked hard to put together a magazine full of Christmas treats that we hope you will enjoy. In particular we would like extend a warm welcome to all incoming Defence Families and hope that our “Welcome to Defence” feature allows you to glimpse a little of what Ipswich has to offer. At Amberley, Defence personnel have once again got in on the Christmas cheer with their huge present bonanza at Wet and Wild, as well as their efforts on field being celebrated with a Squadron Standard ceremony and more of which you can catch up on, on pages 10-14. To see out the year on a high note we celebrated Ipswich local and international opera star Sophie Salvesani, spoke to graduate and scholarship winner Tyla Leisemann, applauded the amazing efforts of Our Lady of the Southern Cross Parish and sought out gifts, movies, books and recipes for you to enjoy. Thank you for reading with us through the year and happy holidays to all!

Trash to treasure for Springfield Parish Our Lady of the Southern Cross Catholic Parish in Springfield Lakes has raised $16,000 through the recently introduced Containers for Change scheme, saving 160,000 containers from landfill in the process. The money raised will go towards both national and international charities for the disadvantaged. The Springfield Catholic parish began collecting containers to deposit at the Queensland Government’s Containers for Change container refund scheme last year. They have since raised $8,000 for Catholic Mission (Ghana Project), $4,000 for the local St. Vincent de Paul, and $4,000 for Blind Eye Ministry which journeys with the most vulnerable in our society. Father Mauro Conte, a priest at Our Lady of the Southern Cross Catholic Parish said the idea was largely a community initiative that showcased the efforts the parish made to be an outward reaching community. “There is an undeniable sense of belonging and therefore a sense of discipleship that connects everyone even in such a simple task as recycling, especially when there is a common goal.” Parishioners and community members bring their containers to the bins at the front of the Church and parishioners volunteer to sort the donations. Hospital Springfield Lakes, Peak Thai Orion Springfield, Eat Sushi Orion Springfield, Garden Restaurant Springfield and Golden House Vietnamese & Chinese Restaurant at SpringLake Metro also donate their used containers to the project. The Queensland containers for change scheme has given further money towards the program through a grant that will allow them to purchase a trailer, small shed, more bins and other equipment required to handle the influx of containers. Father Conte said the response from businesses was heart warming and that it is a great start for what will become an ongoing project. “We are grateful for all those involved, from our parishioners to the businesses whom have already made such a difference, and in the same voice we invite more parishioners and businesses to become our partners in change.” “Our target next year is to reach $20,000 and every cent will go to charities, of which we’ll decide on later in the year.

Springfield parish is passionate about changing lives and is committed to looking after the poor. They would love for more people to join them, so if you are interested in supporting this project, bring containers to the bins at the parish entrance at any time, or use the scheme ID number C10063619 when depositing containers at any Queensland container refund point. If you are a local business interested in supporting this project, please contact the parish at springfield@bne. catholic.net.au or call 07 3324 3900. STAR CHAT

Sophie Salvesani PRINCIPAL SOPRANO IN ‘WEST SIDE STORY’ v with Luciana

Sophie Salvesani took an unusual path to stardom, beginning her career as a teacher but later became a star performer with Opera Australia. After being introduced to musical theatre in high school where she was stunned by a performance of the Sound of Music, Sophie Salvesani went on to study education at university and became a primary school teacher for three years. But then, thanks to a twist of fate, Sophie landed a chance with the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company (IMTC). From there she progressed to Opera Australia where she landed her first role as a principal performer in the currently touring West Side Story. We asked Sophie about her exciting pathway to fame. LifeStyleQ: What was it like performing at the Sydney Opera House? Sophie Salvesani: We had a lot of people in. We had actors from Game of Thrones, Elizabeth Moss and Hayley Atwell. It was such a fabulous experience to perform there, especially on the Joan Sutherland stage. LQ: What do you enjoy most when on stage? SS: The opportunity to make the audience feel something, especially in an iconic place. My character goes on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster and sometimes when we finish the show I’ll see people go through the door and they are still crying. As bad as it sounds that makes me feel really good because that means I’ve done a good job. That’s how you know they have gone on the journey with you. LQ: How do you prepare for Maria who is such an unhappy character? S: Nothing in particular! I think that goes to show how well West Side Story is written. It doesn’t take much for me to cry multiple times when I hear the words, or feel completely overjoyed. It’s just as relevant now as it was back then. LQ: How do you enjoy touring internationally? S: I’m loving it. I only found out just before we started rehearsing that we were going to Germany. I never thought I’d have the chance to perform in some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. I did my best to get out and see as much as I could. LQ: Any really memorable times from Germany? SS: In a museum we met this incredibly lovely German woman.

Her English wasn’t too great as she was from Dresden but she was so welcoming and tried so hard to speak to us. Later we realised our explanations got lost in translation and that she thought we were on holiday from doing the show. It was 5 days until we closed up and moved on that she found out. She was panicking and messaging me saying “I’m getting a ticket!” So we met up after the show and she told us that just over the river one of Germany’s favourite singers was playing. She took us and we watched him and had drinks together and that is one of my favourite memories because I loved that feeling of being welcomed. It’s the same reason I love performing, making a connection with people. LQ: You started with the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company, how did you get to Opera Australia? SS: It was a happy accident. I was having singing lessons in the old Ipswich courthouse and IMTC were rehearsing Phantom of the Opera there. I ended up auditioning and was cast as the Christine alternate but the lady who was playing Christine had commitments with another show and was very ill so I stepped in. Ken and Brenda with the IMTC gave me a lot of little things to do. Small groups, advertising, historical societies. I was doing singing wherever I could. They gave me so many opportunities that no matter how small it was I was interacting with and meeting new people. It all counted, it all went to where my career is now. LQ: What do you love to perform? SS: It would have to be Ah! non credea mirarti. The character believes that the man she loves doesn’t love her anymore and he’s blamed her for being unfaithful but it was a mistake. It’s this completely emotional, heart-wrenching aria and then minutes later it’s followed by Ah! non giunge and he decides to marry her and she’s completely over the top happy and I love that. LQ: What would your dream performance look like? SS: One of the Opera houses in Vienna! Phantom of the Opera in the Vienna Opera house with one of the original Phantoms. LQ: Late nights, travelling through countries, performing every night-

what are your tricks for getting through it all? SS: I don’t have any tricks! I didn’t learn like that, I’ve had a very different career path. I went to university and I became a primary school teacher and then I got my

first professional role in a principal role. There is one thing I do. If I think I’m getting sick or my throat feels a bit funny, I’ll down an entire lemon straight. Do it in the morning and it will get you through the whole day.

St Mary’s Girl wins Griffith scholarship St Mary’s College Ipswich graduate Tyla Leisemann has been recognised for her outstanding achievement in drama, awarded a scholarship valued at $5000, to study film and television at Griffith University.

The scholarship would provide funding for Tyla to undertake tertiary studies at Griffith University in 2020. The scholarship was announced by College Principal Mrs Judith Finan in November at the final assembly for Year 12 students. Tyla, who was the top performing student in her drama class this year, said she was surprised and shocked at the announcement. “I was not expecting it at all,” she said. “Studying film and television at Griffith next year is my first choice, so I am thrilled to have received this scholarship.” Earlier this year, Tyla attended a three week Summer School at Griffith, undertaking introductory courses and gaining credits towards future study at the university. “I loved getting a taste of what’s on offer at Griffith,” Tyla said. Tyla was able to experience a condensed version of a six-week film anscreen production degree.

The students learnt about the different aspects of film making, editing, directing, and lighting. In the last week they even had the opportunity to plan, write, film and edit a short film. Tyla says it was encouraging to

meet so many other likeminded students. “I met so many people that I still remain friends with, which is crucial in this industry.” “After doing the Summer School I thought I would apply to Griffith

next year and see what happens. “I have always felt really supported by my teachers at St Mary’s,” she said.”I have always been encouraged to follow my dreams. Teacher’s never tell us to be realistic. They tell us if we have found what we want to do, just do it, and then they will help us find a way to make it happen.” Narelle Thompson, Tyla’s Drama teacher, said she was a deserving recipient of the scholarship. “Tyla is a joy to teach,” Mrs Thompson said. “She is hard working and dedicated student and always meets her deadlines.” Outside the classroom, Tyla is involved in other aspects of the St Mary’s College community. Tyla is very involved in social justice activities throughout the year, and was a member of the Student Leadership team. Tyla is eagerly awaiting her final results and university offer.

Well, the answer to that is….it depends! If you and your partner own property (e.g. house or unit) together, it will be held as either joint tenants or tenants in common on the title deeds. If held as joint tenants, if you or your partner die, the property automatically passes to the surviving tenant. This happens regardless of whether you have a Will, and how you have distributed your assets in your Will. If the property is held as tenants in common, it means you own a share of the property and that share becomes part of your estate when you die. Your partner does not automatically get your share. What about bank accounts? If you have joint bank accounts when you die, the joint account holder will become the owner of all money in that account. If you have sole bank accounts on your death, your partner is not automatically entitled to these funds. They become part of your estate. There are many other assets that you may have, such as life insurance, funeral insurance, shares, motor vehicles and superannuation which may or may not form part of your estate and

it isn’t the case that your partner automatically gets all of your estate when you die. What if I die without a Will? If you die without a Will, your partner will not be automatically appointed to sort out your affairs and distribute your estate…and your estate may not go to the people you want to benefit from it. In Queensland, there are rules for the distribution of estates if a person dies without a Will, which is called “intestacy”. For example, if you die with a spouse and two children, your spouse will receive the first $150,000 of your estate, your household goods and chattels and one third of the remaining estate. Your children will receive the balance, or two thirds of your estate. This may not be what you wanted to have happen, therefore we encourage you to come and see us before the Christmas period to organise your Will. McNamara Law has an experienced legal team who can help you make a Will and provide advice regarding the ownership of your assets when you die. Holiday time - what to pack v with Luciana

Holidays are meant to be a breath of fresh air, a place to reset your mind away from the stress of work and the monotony of daily routine. Why then do we spoil it by making packing the most stressful part of it all? No longer! Keep these clever tips in mind when packing for your holiday and banish the pressure for good! It’s tempting to think our holidays will be one long runway of daytime stylish loungewear and nights of chic party dresses, but in reality we’re more likely to panic and throw in 40 outfits and then only wear one pair of shorts the entire time. It’s time to pack smarter.

THINK LIGHT

The most important thing to keep in mind is where you’re going and for how long. If you’re just flying out somewhere for a week don’t give yourself trouble by hauling a suitcase behind you. A few days away calls for a simple carry on that should contain clothes, a bathroom & make up bag, another small bag you can use during the day and ONE pair of extra shoes if you’re feeling fancy.

WHAT TO PACK

No matter where you are heading these holidays, the golden rules of packing remain the same. Just like Bear Grylls you can adapt and overcome in any (outfit) situation. Never pack more than two pairs of shoes, they’ll just weigh you down. Invest in one wool jumper or knitwear for cooler nights, if there isn’t room for any more. Generally, two dresses (night and day), a pair of shorts, a skirt, sandals, two tops (night and day) and a going out bag will get you by anywhere in the world. A small bag for earrings, necklaces and jewellry that will fit in your carry on will help to diversify any outfit. Use film cannisters, and pill boxes to stop them tangling.

PACKING TECHNIQUES

The roll is the tried and true technique for fitting a crazy amount in a tiny space. But if you’re taking creasable items, consider packing cubes, vacuum bags or the bundling method. Remember to pack in least to most important so that you’re not left with a pile on the floor when you arrive!

TOP TRICKS

If you’re heading to a wedding or an event pack your event outfit in the carry on so if your luggage is held up you won’t be caught out. The path to true happiness on holiday is wearing clothes that don’t smell. Keep dirty and clean clothes in separate bags. Pack wedges over heels and runners over a second set of sandals. The best way to explore a new city is an early morning walk or run. There is always something that catches your eye, whether it’s a print at the market, a gorgeous dress or even a shell from your favourite beach. Always leave room in your pack for treasures you’ll inevitably want to bring back.

79 YEARS OF AIR POWER RAAF BASE AMBERLEY

Ipswich is a Defence Force city, with RAAF Base Amberley on its doorstep and the Air Base contributing substantially to Ipswich’s economic prosperity and the community fabric of the region. The base is home to more than 8,000 personnel, with F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler combat aircraft squadrons along with the C-17A Globemaster, the KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport, and soon the C-27J ‘Spartan’ tactical airlifter. Historically, air operations officially commenced at RAAF Station Amberley in June 1940, and the base played an important part in the Allied war effort in the Pacific during World War II. Post-war, its role shifted from aircraft maintenance towards operational flying, with the relocation of the RAAF’s heavy bomber squadrons and later the RAAF’s rotary and tactical airlift units. Over the years, the air base has been home base to Lincoln and Canberra Bombers, the F-111 strike aircraft, Caribou tactical transport aircraft, Chinook and Iroquois helicopters. In the modern era, the air base continues to

be home to combat aircraft such as the F/A18F and EA-18G fighters alongside air C-17 transport and KC-30 air refuelling aircraft. The base is also headquarters to Air Combat Group, which manages air base support for all fixed air bases nationally and mounts air bases to support air operations in Australia and overseas. Amberley’s future as a mega Defence base is assured for decades to come.

Early History

In December 1938, 882 acres of land in the Parish of Jeebropilly was gazetted for Defence purpose at Amberley. Located on the overflow floodplains at the confluence of the Warrill Creek and Bremer River the land was known as

“Jeebropilly”, an indigenous name translated as ‘Swamp of the Flying Squirrels’. The northern part, owned by a pioneer family, the Colletts, was named ‘Amberley’ after their country of origin in Sussex England. So, Amberley had indigenous ‘flying operations’ long before the arrival of the F-111s and Super Hornets. Construction of RAAF Air Station Amberley commenced in 1939 and operations began in June 1940 with the formation of No 24 Squadron, No 3 Recruit Training Depot and No 3 Service Flying Training School to provide recruitment and training for RAAF aircrews flying AVRO Anson and CAC Wirraways.

After the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor in 1941 the US Army Air Corps established an Air Echelon on-base and shipped in fighter aircraft (Kittyhawks, Airacobra and Dauntlass) in kit form for assembly at Amberley for the Pacific War. With the formation of No 3 Aircraft Depot, Amberley developed into a significant aircraft assembly, salvage and maintenance facility. In 1942, No 23 Squadron relocated to Amberley, equipped with Vultee ‘Vengeance’ and Bell P-39 ‘Airocobra’ aircraft, then deployed to New Guinea area for light bombing support duties. In 1944, the squadron was reformed as a Heavy Bomber squadron equipped with B-24

‘Liberator’ bombers, which were deployed to carry out bombing missions in the South Pacific. Amberley also hosted other units transiting through to support the war effort including the only US Air Force squadron to be formed outside the United States, the 75th Fighter Group. Post-war, No 82 Wing relocated to Amberley equipped with B-24 ‘Liberator’ bombers. This preempted the transformation in the post war role of Amberley as the RAAF’s major bomber base. Nos 1, 2 and 6 Squadrons were equipped with AVRO ‘Lincoln’ bombers. No 23 Squadron then reformed as a RAAF Active Reserve unit, which remains an active unit at RAAF Amberley to this day.

relocated to Amberley, to provide tactical transport support for the Australian Army with its DH-4C ‘Caribou’ aircraft. The Caribou, which saw active service during the Vietnam War, served for many years providing troop-lift and humanitarian support - including operations from remote airfields in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Iran Jaya. The Caribou was replaced by the C-27J ‘Spartan’ that transferred to RAAF Amberley from RAAF Base Richmond earlier this year. Amberley has also become home to a number of Australian Army

units along with a number of Defence and Industry organisations that provide contractor services. Clockwise from top: RAAF Base Amberley in the 1940s. Chinook helicopter at Mt Walker. F-111 performing its ‘Dump & Burn’. GAF Canberra on approach to Amberley. (Defence Photos)

C.J. VOGLER & SON ESTABLISHED 1877

ies Hobb utting Keyc dels st Mo a C Die The Jet Age & Helicopters

The era of subsonic jet aircraft came to Amberley in 1954, with the arrival of GAF ‘Canberra’ bomber to replace the propeller-driven ‘Lincoln’. This transformed the air base into the modern era jet aircraft and later, supersonic fighter aircraft. From the mid-1960s the RAAF waited with great anticipation for the arrival of the long-range, supersonic strike aircraft, the F-111, only to be thwarted by structural issues that grounded the jet in the United States. The RAAF would have to wait five years from the expected delivery date before it got its F-111s. With aircrews and maintenance personnel trained, and a capability gap a real prospect, the Federal Government decided to lease 24 F-4 ‘Phantoms’ as an interim capability, enabling most of the Canberra fleet to be disbanded. Helicopters became a major part of base activity from December 1971, when No 9 Squadron with its Bell UH-1H ‘Iroquois’ helicopters relocated to Amberley following

active service in Vietnam. The iconic swing-wing F-111 touched down on Australian soil in June 1973, to serve with No 1 and No 6 Squadrons, and became a familiar sight in Ipswich and Australian skies. Australia’s love affair with the F-111 centres on its raw power and its famous ‘Dump & Burn’ flypast at air shows and major events nationally. The F-111 added massive air power capability to Australia, with its 2500 nautical mile range (unrefuelled) and being able to carry a massive bomb load. Tactical Transport Also in 1973, No 12 Squadron reformed with the twin-rotor CH-47 ‘Chinook’ helicopter. The Chinooks were a familiar sight in the region providing mostly troop-lift for the Australian Army but also humanitarian missions. The Chinook was withdrawn from RAAF service and the squadron disbanded in 1989. In 1992, No 38 Squadron, based at RAAF Base Richmond, was

COMBAT PROVEN SUPER HORNET SUPER HORNET COMBINES FIRE POWER WITH EW TECHNOLOGY

Any discussion of the Air Power capability resident at RAAF Base Amberley has to include the performance of the two Super Hornet variants: the F/A-18F Super Hornet and the EA18G ‘Growler’ electronic attack aircraft. The Super Hornets of No 1 Squadron have proved their combat capability in the skies over the Middle East area of operations, conducting air strikes against the forces of Daesh. No 1 Squadron is the sole operator of the F/A18F variant in Australia, since No 6 Squadron re-equipped with the EA-18G ‘Growler’. While regarded initially as filling a capability gap - with the retirement of the F-111, phasing out of the F/A-18A/B ‘Classic’ Hornets and introducing the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter into RAAF service - the Super Hornet has established an important place in the ADF’s Order of Battle. The introduction of the EA-18G ‘Growler’ has firmed the Super Hornet’s place in Australia’s combat air capability. The RAAF bought 12 Growlers, which are highly modified Super Hornet airframes. When fully operational, Australia will have the only tactical Airborne Electronic Attack Capability in the world, outside of the United States. In RAAF service the Growlers will work

with other Defence Force assets such as the Navy’s new Air Warfare Destroyers and the Army’s combat units to identify, jam and when necessary, destroy enemy radar and communications systems. Electronic Attack (EA) is the offensive suppression of an adversary’s electromagnetic spectrum, primarily radar and communications systems. In today’s technologically dependent air combat environment, denial of those systems would seriously impede an adversary’s ability to function effectively. The EA-18G is capable of surviving in a high threat environment. Growlers aim to roll back the adversary’s air defenses through Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) - firing the AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles at emitting enemy radars), airspace dominance, and rapid reaction support (jamming). In an air combat situation, the enemy’s early warning systems provide tracking info to targeting systems, and they pass this information down to the shooters (defending aircraft and ground-based missiles primarily). If this information pathway is interrupted by EW, target engagement becomes far more difficult. The combination of the F/A-18F and EA-18G

variants of the Super Hornet therefore present a formidable air power capability for Australia, a capability that works seamlessly with the F-35A stealth fighter. RAAF Amberley may yet be home to a squadron of F-35 fighters. Top Left: F/A-18F Super Hornet of No 1 Squadron. Top Right: Australia’s newest fighter, the F-35A Lightning II. GLOBAL AIRLIFT & AIR REFUELLING Now a familiar sight over Ipswich, the massive C-17A ‘Globemaster III’ arrived in 2006, first with four aircraft, then six and finally eight aircraft assigned to No 36 Squadron. The RAAF also has a significant operational support capability with the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft assigned to No 33 Squadron. Both squadrons home-base at RAAF Amberley but operate on the global stage. Extended operations in the Middle East and on Australian and international exercises have proved the worth of these air transport and air refuelling platforms in support of operations. The C-17 provides unprecedented capacity for strategic airlift. It allows Australia to rapidly deploy troops, supplies, combat vehicles, heavy equipment and helicopters anywhere in the world. These massive airlifters provide the logistics backbone for ADF operations at home and while deployed overseas. C-17As have also been an integral part of disaster relief and humanitarian missions worldwide. The C-17 is fitted with a cargo bay ramp that allows it to airdrop cargo in-flight, and can operate from unsurfaced runways as short as 3500 feet. Able to carry up to 77 tonnes of cargo, the C-17’s cargo bay can accommodate loads ranging from: an Abrams Tank, four Bushmaster vehicles, or three helicopters. It can also be converted for the medical evacuation role. The

C-17A can be refuelled in-flight by the KC-30A, extending its range further. The KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport is a heavily modified Airbus A330 airliner, enabling Air Force to conduct air-to-air refuelling and provide strategic air lift. The KC-30 features advanced avionics systems, and an electronic warfare self-protection system for shielding against threats from surface-to-air missiles. The KC-30A MRTT is fitted with two forms of air refuelling systems: an Advanced Refuelling Boom System mounted on the tail of the aircraft; and a pair of all-electric refuelling pods under each wing. These systems are controlled by an Air Refuelling Operator in the cockpit, who can view refuelling on 2D and 3D screens. The KC-30A carries a fuel load of more than 100 tonnes, and can transfer part of that load to compatible aircraft, including: F/A-18A/B Hornets; F/A-18F Super Hornets; E/A-18G Growlers; E-7A Wedgetails; C-17A Globemaster III; and other KC-30As, P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft, F-35A Lightning II, and allied aircraft. In its transport role, the KC-30A can carry 270 passengers and its under-floor cargo compartments can accommodate 34,000 kilograms of military and civilian cargo pallets and containers. The newest airlifter in the fleet is the C-27J ‘Spartan’ tactical tranport aircraft that replaced

the venerable Caribou aircraft that served the RAAF for decades. The C-27J Spartan battlefield airlifter will complement the Australian Defence Force’s existing air mobility fleet. Its capabilities bridge the gap between Army helicopters, such as the CH-47F Chinook, and larger Air Force aircraft, such as the C-130J Hercules and C-17A Globemaster III. It can operate from unsurfaced airstrips, and support humanitarian missions in remote locations. These three aircraft types provide the transport and air refuelling support that is essential to support of air combat operations. Above: RAAF KC-30A MRTT air-refuels a C-17A ‘Globemaster III’. DEFENCE NEWS IN BRIEF

A ceremonial parade to consecrate the Squadron Standard for No 86 Wing was attended by His Excellency General, the Honourable David Hurley (Retd), GovernorGeneral of the Commonwealth of Australia. 86 Wing was formed in 1945 to undertake ground attack missions in the South-West Pacific. The Wing reformed at RAAF Base Richmond in 1987 and in January 2012 relocated to RAAF Base Amberley, currently comprising Nos 33, 34 and 36 Squadrons.

Christmas Treat... it’s a wrap Although it’s a few weeks away until the festive season begins, the RAAF Amberley Christmas Treat team has already started wrapping gifts. More than 1700 Defence personnel and their families are expected to attend this year’s Christmas Treat on 9 December. This event isheld every year at Wet’n’Wild on the Gold Coast. Santa will hand out the gifts to the lucky children attending the theme park, making it a highly anticipated day for all. Outgoing Executive Officer 23 Squadron, Squadron Leader Alex Smith, said he had been busy passing on the tricks of the trade to his replacement Squadron Leader Luke Headley and had

roped in from Warrant Officer Michael McDonnell, for his first day on the job as the Squadron Warrant Officer. “The team here at Amberley has managed to wrap about 750 gifts so far but there is still so much fun to be had,” SQNLDR Smith said. “This year’s event is set to be a cracker with so many children of all different ages coming along. “We love this event as it really is a way for us to thank and acknowledge the efforts of all the personnel and their families.”

Volunteer firefighters board a C-17A at the Richmond Air Base. The ADF is working with Emergency Management Australia to support the firefighting efforts in New South Wales and Queensland. Defence has placed liaison officers in the State Disaster Coordination Centre (SDCC) and with New South Wales Rural Fire Service Headquarters. Additionally, the ADF is providing transport support to the firefighting effort and is postured to provide other capabilities such as aviation, logistics, engineering and accommodation support.

Fitness training for firefighters In November, No 33 Squadron prepared five of its KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transports for launch at the same time, demonstrating the Squadron’s ability to surge to meet Australia’s strategic air mobility requirements. At RAAF Base Amberley, the five KC-30As conducted an ‘elephant walk’ – the traditional name given to a group of aircraft taxiing together – before four of these aircraft took off on missions that included air-to-air refuelling training, a flight test activity, and airlift support to rural firefighters in New South Wales. Fitness is an important aspect of working life for all members of the Australian Defence Force, and Physical Training Instructors play an integral role in developing the strength and fitness of Air Force personnel through the design, delivery and coaching of high performance physical strength and conditioning programs.

This is particularly important for RAAF firefighters who could be called upon to carry out rescues and gain access buildings to fight fires. Pictured above, PTI Corporal Kylee Ganzerla, from No 382 Squadron, conducts a trade specific training session with Fire Fighters at RAAF Base Amberley.

Volunteers welcome at Ipswich Nature Centre

Top 6 tips for getting your garden through a heatwave 1. Choose fertiliser wisely Use a hydrating, seaweed based liquid fertiliser high in mannitol or bettines. These fertilisers increase nutrient absorption which can otherwise be affected by high soil temperatures. 2. Create a moisture barrier When mowing, set your blades higher to leave more grass, which will protect the soil from the sun. Refrain from raking the clippings, and combine with mulch after watering for extra protection. 3. Water carefully Make indents in your soil where water may pool and penetrate. Water in mornings to avoid disease building humidity. If you’re going on holiday, invest in an automatic waterer or timed system.

4. Promote bio-diversity Plant different but complimentary native species in your garden. They are suited to high heats and dryness of Australia and can hold water well, stop erosion and provide protection for other plants. 5. Provide shade Some areas of Ipswich have been reaching temperatures of nearly forty degrees, and the plants are feeling it. Stake and prop an old white sheet and cover delicate areas like vegetable gardens during the day to deflect the worst of the rays and then remove at night. 6. Sacrifice the lawn Severe water restrictions mean you need to decide where to concentrate the bulk of your watering. Focus on essentials.

New Volunteer Information Tours will be conducted at Ipswich Nature Centre, giving anyone interested in volunteering a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into caring for Ipswich’s favourite animals. Head zookeeper Nicole Richards is looking forward to leading the tour, and hopes new recruits will be ready to start their first shift in January. “We realised lots of regular visitors didn’t know we had a volunteering program, so we wanted to open the doors and share what we do. We think the monthly Volunteer Information Tours will be a great way to attract more people who want to help look after our animals” she said. New volunteers will be joining a dedicated team that loves what they do, including volunteer veteran Margaret Offer, who started volunteering more than a decade ago. “I look forward to coming in each week because I enjoy interacting with people and I love the animals,” Ms Offer said. The 70-year-old has developed a special bond with some of the animals over the years, particularly a frill-necked lizard called Leo. “We do have a real connection, maybe it’s because we’re both old,” Ms Offer laughs. “Leo’s been here even longer than I have, but he’ll never put his frill

up around me because he’s never agitated when I’m around.” Ms Offer’s expert knowledge about the Nature Centre’s animals is now being passed down to new volunteers like Veterinary Science student Margreta Vosper. The 20-year-old recently started volunteering one day a week at the centre to get some first-hand experience for her chosen career in wildlife conservation. “I wanted to get more experience working with animals so it’s a great opportunity to learn more during my uni holidays,” Ms Vosper said. “There’s lots to do, from looking after enclosures to cleaning up after the wallabies, raking up hay and helping prepare food.” Tour attendees will be able to ask current volunteers about their experience and find out exactly what a day in the life of an animal carer looks like before they commit. The first Volunteer Information Tour starts in December, with tours running monthly in 2020. Tours meet under the rotunda at the Nature Centre. For more information about the role and the volunteering program see the Ipswich City Council Volunteer Portal. Top: Margaret Offer and Margreta Vosper with Leo the Lizard. TAP’D

What we are reading:

TIM RULE | PA HOTEL

‘THE BEST KIND OF BEAUTIFUL’ by Frances Whiting

Have you tried a good Sour beer? A good sour beer is like that friend who gets along with everyone. Beer geeks love the layers of flavours in a sour, while people who don’t like beer love that it doesn’t quite taste like a typical beer. The style was once hard to find but sours are now easy to find. Still, many people are not familiar with sours. Sour beer is the oldest type of beer in history. Nearly all beer used to be at least somewhat sour before pasteurisation and sterilisation was understood. Sours today are tarttasting, made with wild bacteria and yeasts. Bacteria gives sour beers a distinctive taste while yeast adds the funky and earthy quality. Tap’d Craft Beer Bar at the PA Hotel has four beer taps dedicated to sour beers this summer: Currumbin Valley’s Mango Sour with Lemon Myrtle. A whopping 84kg of Kensington Pride mango goes in to make this beer. The lemon myrtle is there to support the flavour experience, not to overpower it. The mango dominates and the lemon myrtle brings a subtle, light citrus zing to the sourness.

Next is Newstead’s The Doors of Perception Dark Fruit Sour. Pouring a rich, deep mulberry colour with a slightly pink head, this boysenberry, mulberry and blackcurrant fruit sour has an aroma of jammy berries. It’s also packing a berry punch, with raspberry, blackberry, red and blackcurrant and mulberry notes, plus a citric tang. Ballistic’s Red Papaya Sour is a zingy sour drop with a fresh finish. Made from locally sourced Red Papaya you’ll be transported to a tropical getaway. It’s the same base recipe as their Twang Kettle Sour Ales, utilising a new fruit. Finally, Brooklyn’s Bel-Air Sour has a smack of tartness that opens onto a hit of tropical fruit, courtesy of Brooklyn’s lacto bacteria, their ale yeast and a generous helping of Amarillo dry-hopping. Soft barley malts and wheat keep things dry and refreshing like a blend of Champagne, hops, and pineapple. These sour beers will be available at Tap’d this month as well as other great beers. Check them out! Cheers, Tim

The Best Kind of Beautiful tells the story of Florence and her wonderful, famous, jazz singing family who perform together like the Partridges’. One night, when performing their hit ‘Santa Was a Jazz Cat’, Florence is overcome with a bout of stage fright which simultaneously becomes a catalyst for her retreat into herself and ignites a growing desire to create a life and image of herself that is entirely her own. Then Florence meets Albert Flowers who is everything she wants and yet, exists in a world she believes she could never enter. The two have their own immense secret troubles and troubling families to contend with but find solace in their work- replanting bushland in Sydney. As they learn more about each other they begin to realise they are not so different and need each other more than they realise. What comes next is a beautiful love story that illuminates just

how lovely, awkward, humiliating, enjoyable and hilarious love can be. Whiting has penned a sweet and unpretentious novel that explores how people can outgrow their troubles and grow into themselves as they find each other. Best of all, she manages to avoid the pitfalls that come with writing about suburban Australia and instead uses the unique imagery of the gorgeous native flora to create a world that is its own but which speaks to the familar, endearing the reader to the places and evoking memories for anyone who has ever sweated through an Australian summer. Best Kind of Beautiful is a genuine, heartfelt ode to how wonderful life can be when you let down your barriers and let someone in. Published by: Pan Macmillan

KNIVES OUT

Watermelon bites with halloumi A Christmas kitchen is a special place to be for two reasons: cooking with the people you love and eating with them afterwards. The Christmas kitchen post lunch can, however, be a nightmare if you aren’t prepared. If you’re asked to bring something to the table this Christmas why not whip up this beautiful little watermelon bites dish that requires no pots, pans scrubbing or endless containers! Just sweet watermelon marinated in good quality olive oil, cracked peppercorns and topped with salty grilled halloumi cheese and fresh mint. In the words of its creator Antoni Porowski “refreshing, beautiful and super easy to prepare.”

Ingredients (Serves 32)

- 32 (2.5cm/1n) cubes seedless watermelon (from a 2 kilo watermelon). - 60 ml extra-virgin olive oil -1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper or mixed peppercorns. - 1 250g packet halloumi cheese, drained and cut lengthways into 4 slices. - A good-sized handful of 20

LifeStyle | December 2019

fresh mint leaves, larges leaves roughly torn.

Method In a bowl combine the watermelon olive oil and pepper. Let stand for 10-15 minutes stirring occasionally. Pat the halloumi slices dry with kitchen paper. Heat a large dry, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add the halloumi and cook turning once until golden brown on both sides, 4-6 minutes. Transfer the cheese slices to a cutting board and cut each one into eight pieces. Reserving the oil, use a slotted spoon to transfer the watermelon to a large serving platter. Set a piece of halloumi on each watermelon cube and top with a mint leaf. Drizzle bites with about 3 tablespoons of the reserved oil, spooning a healthy dose of the cracked peppercorns on top as you go. Serve immediately (it’s tastiest while cheese is warm), inviting your guests to eat with their fingers

Writer/Director Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) assembles the best ensemble cast of the year for a modern take on the ‘whodunnit’ murder mystery in Knives Out, a ridiculously fun film boasting an excellent screenplay and terrific performances to match. Starring the recognisable faces of Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie-Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, Australia’s own Toni Collette, Katherine Langford and screen icon Christopher Plummer as unique characters all with their own quirks and mysteries, a suspenseful crowd-pleaser which averts certain genre tropes makes for a deliciously entertaining time at the cinema, an absolute must see film before 2019 comes to an end. When successful crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate on the night of his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and somewhat famous Detective Benoit Blanc is enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family (whom all desperately want a piece of his fortune) to his trusted staff and personal nurse, Blanc begins to unravel a web of lies and despicable going ons within the mysterious family. Determined to uncover the truth and figure out who hired him in the first place, every family member and attendee of the mansion on that fateful night becomes a suspect as you are left guessing until the very end. A smart, clever and often funny film that you can’t see where it’s going even when you think you can, this throwback to the days of old where murder mysteries were a dime a dozen sets its own rules and avoids cliches in telling a mature, realistic story that proves its director is not married to one particular genre. With a break out performance from Ana de Armas after notable roles in the excellent Blade Runner 2049 and War Dogs, she can be seen alongside Craig again in next year’s James Bond film, something to look forward to considering their great chemistry in this. The knives are out, come and play.

THE IRISHMAN 5/5 STARS Following a short stint in select theatres across the world, the hugely awaited gangster epic from film auteur Martin Scorsese is finally here. As special a treat, as it always is each time, a new Scorsese film releases, his first since 2016’s Silence is especially exciting given it reunites cinema icons Robert De Niro, Al Pacinoand Joe Pesci. Offering the convenience of viewing from the comfort of your own home, readily available on streaming service Netflix as the first real deal proper big-scale film to do so, if you weren’t one of the lucky few able to see this in theatres, get ready to lock the doors, put your phone away and dive in to the three-and-a-half hour epic known as The Irishman. Based upon the 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brand, this top tier film partly based on real life events is easily one of the year’s best and Scorsese at his brilliant best. As Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran(De Niro) looks back on his life and the hits that defined his mob career, his connections with the Bufalino crime family and the disappearance of his long-time friend Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino) come back to him with particular interest. Notable for being the film to bring Pesci out of acting retirement and for the use of expensive de-aging technology to make himself, De Niro and Pacino appear thirty to forty years younger as they portray their respective characters across different time periods, the sheer fact this is De Niro and Scorsese’s first collaboration since 1995’s Casino and the reunion of De Niro and Pesci since Goodfellas is reason alone to not miss this one. With a top notch supporting cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Ray Ramano, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemmons and Stephen Graham, it’s funny, gloriously violent in the right ways and insanely quotable. In with a good chance to take home the Oscar for Best Picture, Scorsese has delivered yet another excellently crafted, superbly acted epic that is sure to go down as one of the greats as the history of cinema unfolds. 5/5 STARS

Disney + Lizzie Maguire Another streaming site has been added to the growing consortium and for just $13 a month you can access Disney +. Now that Disney has successfully conquered the Star Wars franchise they are continuing on their journey of throwback cash grabs. Remakes of old childhood TV shows are proving enormously popular these days and with that comes the return of the beloved Lizzie Maguire. It’s a brand-new show that will focus on an older Lizzie who is living in New York. In an adorable Instagram post released earlier this month Duff revealed that she is also bringing her family with her! Mum Hailie Todd, dad Robert Carradine, brother Jake Thomas and best friend Adam Lamberg will all be back on our screens bringing the real heart of the show back to life. Best news of all, 13 year old animated Lizzie will retain her position as queen of our hearts and continue to act as adult Lizzie’s internal monologue, pink slides and all. In sadder news (for viewers), Lizzie’s love Ethan Clarke aka Clayton Snyder, is engaged and not making a confirmed return, alongside bestie Miranda (Lalaine

Kelly Clarkson’s Mansion Kelly Clarkson has released pictures of her Tennessee mansion as she prepares to put the massive property back on the market. She originally listed it for $8.75 million in 2017 but when she was unable to shift it she took about $1 million off the price tag and it is now selling for $7.5 million. The house, which rests on a lake is a world within itself, featuring many rooms for her four children, playgrounds, play rooms, spa rooms, sand volleyball courts, greenhouses, salon themed pool rooms, English-style gardens, a large saltwater pool,a gym, a private elevator, a two storey office, a private dock and an area for al fresco dining. Clarkson has her own show and is a favourite as a voice coach on the American TV show The Voice. Her success has allowed her to buy another mansion in LA but she is unable to sell her Tennessee one despite already lowering the price by one million dollars. However she’s not the only rich one with real estate woes. Celebrities Brie Larson, Justin Timberlake, Lena Dunham, Alex Rodriguez, Harry Styles and Tracy Morgan are just the latest to lose up big in the property market. There have been rumours that the US is lining up for another housing bubble, which will see even celebrities struggling to sell their mega mansions. Let’s hope for Clarksons sake there’s a bored millionaire out there with exactly $7. 5 million in their pocket.

It may come as a surprise that Saoirse Ronan has been quietly gracing our screens for nearly ten years. It seems as if the young child star of Atonement has very much grown up and in that time has developed an absolutely fabulous wardrobe with a whip crack sense for what looks good. Her style is marked by an understated grace and elegance reminiscent of a young Cate Blanchett and her daring for wearing has seen her embrace the best from each year she’s been on screen.

As she grew older, Ronan underwent a transition from pale, floral, straightline frocks to more adventurous outlines that began to symbolise her signature style as one that dips between royal gowns and glamorous boss lady chic.

Thanks to her ethereal Irish complexion and a choice in naked make up (an anomaly in Hollywood) she can wear deep, rich and sombre hues as well as their brilliant counterparts, high necklines and full skirts without drowning in the fabrics. Given that she is both a stage and film actor it’s no surprise that she has an eye for dramatic, flamboyant costumes and the special ability to wear them all in her own way, one that marks the beginning of an icon. Some of her best looks have included a Valentino gown with butterfly embroidered detail that she wore to a 2014 Vanity Fair party, a pink Gucci mini at the 2015 LACMA Gala and a a Cushnie et Ochs dress at the 2018 AAL in Los Angeles.
