Summer Ready

T

his May will be a busy one in the Thomas household. I have the daunting task of mentally preparing for Pace, my youngest, to graduate high school on June 1! I’m pretty sure it will take me the entire month. There were times when I thought this day would never come and he would very possibly become a professional high-school student. Now, with one short month to go, it seems the tables have turned and I may be the one he’s worried about. So, during this month of preparation, I must practice my not so ugly cry face in the mirror, learn to control my urge to lick my fingers to fix his hair before he puts on his cap and gown, and try to remember not to call him Pacey in front of his friends. I have my work cut out for me and I will put all 31 days of May to good use in getting ready for this momentous occasion. Doug and I enjoyed working through ideas for this issue at our editorial meeting over bacon, eggs and pancakes at the Paris Coffee Shop. This month’s issue is all about summer preparedness. Whether it’s sending your kiddos off to camp, getting your backyard ready for grilling, or taking a trip to the Keys. We have a little bit of something for everyone. We truly appreciate you and hope to see you around town!

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH 75TH ANNIVERSARY Trinity Lutheran Church was started in 1942 by a group of people from Bosque County who had moved to Fort Worth to work for the war effort. After a year of meeting in the old market on Henderson they decided that they needed a permanent facility. They were able to purchase a house on Tulsa Way and Montgomery and remodel it to become a church. Growth continued for several years and in 1952 the congregation decided to build a new facility on the existing property and that facility, after several remodels, is still home to the congregation today. In the mid 1960’s the congregation made the decision to start a children’s center and today is home to over 130 children from six weeks old to 5 years. This school serves both members and non-members providing Christian education to the young. On May 6-7, 2017 the congregation will be celebrating 75 years of ministry to the Fort Worth community.

Escape to the C

ool nights, tiny umbrellas in fruity drinks, soft sand, and the rustle of palm trees in a warm breeze; the sights, textures, and sounds

of a tropical vacation inspire relaxation like nothing else. As summer approaches — and brings with it, undoubtedly, another year of punishing heat — many Texans look to their calendars and begin to daydream of an equatorial escape. A few usual suspects come to mind: Hawaii, perhaps, or Cozumel. For ease of travel and convenience, however, one destination should stand paramount: Key West, Florida.

Keys PARADISE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK — AND THE KEYS WELCOME ALL COMERS.

As the southernmost point in the continental United States, Key West has the benefit of geography to add to a whole host of additional blessings. Situated closer to Cuba than Miami, this subtropical escape maintains an irreverent and independent spirit that preserves a stress-free, vacation destination vibe year-round. As to what makes Key West special, and what distinguishes it from other, comparable

retreats, look no further than the unique factors that craft its one-ofa-kind spirit. Key West sits at the intersection of Bahamian, Cuban, and North American culture, and boasts a singular mixture of history, natural, and architectural beauty. Whether you fly in to Key West International Airport or drive in across the Overseas Highway, you’ll find yourself transported to a place removed from everyday cares. This historic appeal has not only lured generations of vacationers, but also a who’s who of celebrities, writers, and musicians, including Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, Tennessee Williams, and Jimmy Buffett. For each of these personalities — not to mention the generations of fishermen and cigar makers who have called the island home — Key West appeared redolent of all the hallmarks of paradise. While most people assume that Key West is a mere tropical hamlet, the island actually boasts a population of over 25,000. This benefits

To truly appreciate Key West’s natural bounty, stop by the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden. This arboretum and wildlife refuge features the only frost-free tropical forest garden in the contiguous United States. For many visitors, a major part of the island’s appeal comes from its legendary night life. The island has no shortage of bars, many of which line Duval Street in the city’s iconic Old Town. The oldest bar in Florida, Capt. Tony’s Saloon, offers a picturesque setting to imbibe your favorite spirits, or perhaps snap a photo amidst decades of memorabilia. To truly get into the island spirit, you’ll want to visit the Garden of Eden. This clothing-optional bar sits atop the Bull and Whistle, and provides a useful excuse to bare it all. After your night (or nights) out, you may want to dry out and soak in some of Key West’s legendary salt breezes. The island’s Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park welcomes visitors for a nominal fee per carload, and has an expanse of white sand, along with deep water for snorkeling or swimming. Closer to center, Smathers Beach sits along South Roosevelt Boulevard, and offers day-passes for parasailing, kayaking, or tubing. Regardless of what you choose to do, you’ll sympathize with Hemingway, who said: “It’s the best place I've ever been, anytime, anywhere.”

If you’re designing an outdoor space from scratch, a built-in grill can provide a glorious centerpiece. The Backyard Grilling Company offers Twin Eagles, Lynx, and several more, along with built-in storage and accessories to complete the design. A broad selection of freestanding grills allows for mobility and flexibility, and come with all the necessary equipment in one convenient package. Regardless of your preference, the Backyard Grilling Company will ensure that your set-up satisfies your needs and dreams. “We absolutely love helping with design,” says Jori. “A lot of people know exactly what they want, while others will have no idea. Regardless, we can walk you through the process, and help decide which grill fits best, along with the other built-in components, like cabinetry.” Aside from grills, the Backyard Grilling Company has all the accessories you need to finish out your summertime headquarters. Full outdoor kitchens make it easy to whip up a feast, while heaters help ensure that the weather doesn’t dictate when you can have a good time. Outdoor furniture by Homecrest transforms the outdoors into a true leisure space, and lets the chef take a load off after a long day at the grill. “We’re a one-stop shop, no matter what you need for an outdoor space or backyard,” says Jori. “We sell grills for outdoor kitchens, grills on carts, traditional smokers, gas logs, accessories, rubs, cooking wood, and furniture. We also offer great conversation, and talk recipes literally all day long.” If you’re happy with your current backyard set-up, there are still reasons to stop by the Backyard Grilling Company. The true backyard master seeks to always hone his craft. Whether it’s new gear or brisket recipes, the Backyard Grilling Company has you covered. “We have three families that help with the store, and all three make brisket differently,” says Jori. “The end results are always phenomenal. We like to spritz with apple juice; one of my daughters likes to use beer, while the other likes to cover the brisket with mustard. We have regulars who come to the store, hang out and visit, pick up recipes and go home to try them.” Thanks to the warm atmosphere of this family-run business, any visitor can quickly become a regular. “He and my mom came out to the Hill Country with virtually no resources and a beat-up old car,” says John. “They found a piece of land and started the camp that first year with two campers. He used his UT swim team members as the counselors. That first year, we had 17 counselors and two campers.”

The early iteration of Camp Longhorn got placed on hold with the outbreak of World War II, as Tex Robertson left to serve in the United States Navy. After the war ended, summers in central Texas resumed the normal pace of life, and Camp Longhorn picked up right where it left off. The camp’s growth began in earnest in 1951, with the addition of a girl’s camp. The second branch of Camp Longhorn, Indian Springs, opened in 1975. This expansion occurred in the woods of the Texas Hill Country, and counts two private, spring-fed lakes as the centerpieces of its paradisiacal setting. In 2016, C3, Camp Longhorn’s third camp, opened. Situated on once-rugged lakefront ranch land, this newest iteration of Camp Longhorn caters specifically to one and two-week campers. With so much history under its belt, Camp Longhorn has preserved a clear fidelity to the principles and approach that have served it well. Despite this, the camp has evolved to serve changing tastes. While this balancing act could become difficult for many organizations, Camp Longhorn has never stumbled. “The balance between tradition and change is one that we in the youth camp world obviously struggle with,” says John. “After all, the environment in which we all live has changed radically. We stay true to what has always made Camp Longhorn great, however. The goal here is that each and every camper is someone special, and that they’re the best they can be.” CONTINUED >

TEXAS SUMMERTIME TRADITION (CON TI N U ED)

In line with this ethos, Camp Longhorn preserves a non-competitive spirit, in which campers are encouraged to do the best that they can do. A merit system rewards youngsters for good deeds and exemplary action, and a camp store allows for the use of merits for purchase. No cell phones are allowed at Camp Longhorn, in order to preserve the sanctity of the camp environment, and to prevent against distractions. In fact, students can’t bring anything that has internet connectivity, or needs re-charging. Parents can send e-mails to campers, but this communication is one-way; two-way “check-ins” are restricted to the old-fashioned pen and paper. “At Camp Longhorn, we place a premium on one-on-one communication, looking someone in the eyes and responding to a question,” says John. We try to get back to those basic communication skills, because from those it’s not too difficult to build teamwork skills. We’re about having kids build friendships, which is the most valuable lesson and takeaway from camp. It was that way in 1939, and it’s that way in 2017.” Fort Worth’s Allison Jones knows perfectly well this most valuable lesson of Camp Longhorn. Allison attended Camp Longhorn for 10 years, starting at the age of 9 as a camper, and “graduating” to camp counselor. “I probably would have stayed there forever if I could,” says Allison. “It was my favorite thing about growing up, and I looked forward to it every year.” When asked to pick a few favorite memories, Allison struggles, as the entire camp experience occupies one giant, golden memory in her mind. The friendships take pride of place, however, and she credits some of the closest relationships in her life to her time spent at Camp Longhorn. “I still know every word to every song. It’s such a wonderful place,” says Allison. “It may as well have been written in my wedding vows that my own kids would go to Camp Longhorn. Our oldest Annabelle, is about to start.” As for lessons that she’s excited for her children to learn, Allison highlights a sense of independence and good old-fashioned manners. “The independence and manners and life values you learn there are amazing,” says Allison. “At the time, I wasn’t even aware that I was saying ‘yes ma’am’ and ‘no ma’am’, but you learn without really being aware, and gain an incredible amount of confidence.” Annabelle has a palpable sense of excitement for her first year at camp. "I think it is going to be so fun," says Annabelle. "My mom went there her whole life and has always told me so much about it. I can't wait to go!" At Camp Longhorn, they have a slogan: everybody is somebody. Parents who want to best utilize their children’s summer vacations should take note, as you don’t often have the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships and craft valuable life skills, all while having a blast in the great outdoors. A WHOLE SEASON IS RIGHT

AROUND THE CORNER— IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO

REINVENT THE WALL!

T

he walls of your home are a form of your personal taste and expression. So when choosing your wall coverings

think of what message you want to convey and the kind of atmosphere you want to create in the room. Of course it’s easy to just hang a few photos, a shelf or a piece of art work you’ve picked up on the wall, but why not let it be so much more? Vänt Wall Panels share some of their picks for the hottest trends in wall coverings: · HANDMADE FABRICS. Bring a little bit of nature in doors

with handmade fabric wall coverings. Handmade fabric combines renewable fibers like hemp or sea grass for walls with

touchable texture. These wall coverings offer an unexpected appeal to your home and are environmentally-friendly. · SHIPLAP PANELING. You may have recently heard the word “shiplap” tossed around

in design magazines or on HGTV and wondered what exactly it was. Shiplap is a roughsawn pine paneling hung horizontally. It provides a rustic appeal and can be literally used anywhere from walls to ceilings. Stain it, paint it or white wash it, the choice is all yours! · GEOMETRIC PATTERNED WALLPAPER. Modernize any room with simple geometric

patterned wallpaper. Geometric patterns bring order into our homes with simple clean patterns that are basically timeless. For a completely up-to-date look, select one with metallics which are being touted 2017. · WALL PANELS. If you’re looking for a spot-on way to give your walls new

life, wall panels are the way to go. You won’t find an easier or more affordable wall covering. There are endless possibilities with configurations to suit any need you may have and are a match for any room. They also make a great headboard look behind beds. Most come in easy to care for finishes such as pearl, leatherette, micro-suede, and metallics. Check them out at VantPanels.com · EXPOSED BRICK. Whether real or faux, who doesn’t admire an exposed brick wall?

The trend originated from the industrial loft style apartments but today any home style can feature an exposed brick wall. Brick looks amazing whether it’s left as is or white washed. The greatest thing about brick is its classic and has longevity. · WALL BOOKCASES. Bookcases are a special way to fill a wall space. Exuding person-

ality, history, intelligence, and filled with life stories, book shelves give your walls warmth, emotion and life. Sharing your shelf is sharing yourself – showcasing the building blocks that have shaped your wisdom, personality, and identity. · GALLERY WALL. Whether you collect snow globes, decorative plates, album or book

covers, nature artifacts, baseballs or tea cups, any collection you treasure deserves a visible place in your home. A photo wall displaying family memories, vacations, birthdays, weddings and other special life moments are a visual story of your life and are another way to create a gallery wallinfused with love. Gather your gems for a personal way to style up a wall while making a stunning statement about the things that are meaningful to you. · PHOTO WALL. Talk about impact! A photo that is displayed on a full wall will surely

make a statement. Places you’ve visited, nature shots, art, food, drink, music, films, and more are all available in full wall size. 22

SPRING FORWARD FASHION PAX & PARKER HAS THE LOOKS YOU NEED FOR SPRING — OR ANY TIME OF THE YEAR.

O

f all the times of the year to look your best, late spring into early summer caters the best to personal style. With the natural world

exploded into color and vibrancy, we naturally want to dress up, enjoy the weather, and luxuriate in the season’s ease. Despite the character of Fort Worth’s local boutiques, shoppers have often felt compelled to travel to Dallas or farther afield in search of the newest fashions. With the opening of Pax & Parker, however, we now have a major incentive to shop local. Located off South University Drive at 1621 River Run #116, this stylish and elegant boutique caters to both men and women. The brainchild of Winston Parker Ley and Alari Paxson, Pax & Parker has already established itself as the go-to boutique for fresh, fashion-forward style. As a homegrown Fort Worth business, the story of Pax & Parker is just as compelling as its vibrant inventory. “My partner and I both have a retail buying background,” says Winston. “We met as employees at Julian Gold, a retailer in San Antonio that’s been in business for over 70 years. Of course, they do so many things right; but at the same time, as the younger generation, we could see where they were lacking.” Winston and Alari began to dream big, and Fort Worth loomed large in the minds of both. Alari had attended TCU’s fashion merchandising program, and developed a love of the city as a student. When Winston began to consider an MBA, Alari encouraged him to look at the Neeley School of Business.

was looking for positions, and we got to talking.” To these two intrepid fashion buyers, Fort Worth appeared as an underserved market. By the time Winston finished graduate school, Alari had moved back to Fort Worth, and the two began full-time work on getting Pax & Parker off the ground.

The first year of any small business stands as a crucible, in which those that emerge stand strong and primed for the future. The keys to its success? Excellent taste and exceptional customer service. “Many small boutiques have strayed away from traditional customer service,” says Winston. “We like to get to know everybody, so

Parting Thoughts

Parting Thoughts M

ost children take after one parent more than the other. Such was the case with my family. I

am the spitting image of my father: the nose, the opinions, the gregarious nature. My sister is equally like my mother: quiet, stubborn, and extremely shy. In these situations, it can be easy to assume that the big life lessons come from the parent that the child is most like. I beg to disagree. For me, a lot of the things that I work on to this day, I’ve learned from my mother. My father’s nature is already ingrained, natural. But when I think of the things that I want to curate in myself, my mother comes to mind. As I said, my mother is quiet. She’s funny and vibrant and has a razor sharp wit, but she shares that with only a few select people. She was never one to dictate great truths and expect us to take note. Her actions are her edicts and these are a few of the things that I learned from watching her love us.

1 2

1. READ. My father loves to read. My mother

loves to read. The difference is that my mother read to my sister and I. It started with simple children’s books, of course, but it didn’t end there. She read novels to us, series of books that we would look forward to getting a chapter or two of before bed. She taught us that sometimes the best escape is between the leaves. 2. BE RATIONAL. There is nothing irrational

people hate more, than being irrational. My mother is possessed with book smarts and common sense. In seeing her deal with two children and a somewhat high-strung husband, I have often thought I would have torn my hair out. But she remained calm. Kids will wear out their energy and husbands will eventually see that they are being unreasonable. And in the end, you

34

3. BE PRESENT IN NATURE. Once again, my father loves to be outside, with

a camera, shooting in the woods. But my mother loves to go out walking as well. While Dad was on his knees in the dirt, my mother is the best wildlife spotter I know. She’s aware and present in her surroundings, unencumbered by f-stops and aperture. Instead, 40 paces ahead, she’s seeing the fleeting beauty that a camera misses. 4. BE THE FRIEND YOU WANT. My mother is a great friend. She’s shy, so it

takes a while to get to know her, but when you do, she’s warm and attentive and puts in the effort to be friendly. I make friends easily, but being the friend that I would like to have and be is more difficult. She has taught me that sometimes more isn’t necessarily better. 5. LIVE YOUR LESSONS. My mother used to make my sister and I read a

chapter of the Bible a day and write down our favorite verse. At the time I found it tedious, especially when the subject wasn’t very exciting. But in addition to this, I saw my mother reading her own Bible. She wasn’t just giving us busy work to try to get us interested in our faith. She was trying to share the words that gave her comfort and inspiration. These were never spoken things, but they resonate with me today. Sometimes
