Men that Make a Difference
Coming home from a rough day I open the door to my house and there he is. Looking at me with pure wonderment. He stares for only a second then cracks a smile at me. At that moment, all troubles from that day are gone and my heart is full. Aside from accepting Christ, he has made the single most impact on the way in which I live my life. Never have I evaluated every area of my life the way I do now. It is profound the changes that have been made only having known him for six months. His name is Ezra and he is my firstborn, my son.
I have always had a great relationship with my father and understood the importance of his role. His responsibilities are many, none of which he takes lightly, all of which he handles well. Not just in my home, but in life I have seen how a father or a father figure’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational and how their correction can be life-saving and life-giving. Constantly encouraging young women and men to be the best versions of themselves. I now realize that this relationship is more reciprocal than what I once thought. My child through no action of his own is constantly encouraging me to be the best version of myself. It is a relationship that is both simple and complex.
Having these new feelings and thoughts has opened my eyes even more to the way in which Christ loves us all. I now realize that Jesus lived a perfect life not just to please his father, but to save his children.
It is with this newfound respect that I would like to thank all fathers and father figures for filling the important role that they do. Let’s all take time to thank those in our lives that have pointed us in the right direction.
Happy Father’s Day!

It Takes a Village
It was 1990, in Morningside, Fort Worth, Texas, when police officers Gary Randle and Noble Crawford finally had enough. Throughout the years, the number of young, impressionable, inner-city youths joining gangs became too many to ignore, and their time patrolling the streets confirmed the issue. But why?
Through research, Randle and Crawford uncovered a direct pipeline connecting children in fatherless homes to eventual gang affiliation.

From that moment, they felt compelled to create a leadership program of prevention and early-development training for boys: an attempt to fill the void left by an absent father. And to that end, HOPE Farm was born, a ministry in Morningside for fatherless boys and their single moms that provides mentorship to guide at-risk boys to become Christ-centered men of integrity.
"Our framework provides structure but with the flexibility of implementation based on need, availability, and local

ARTICLE BY HANNAH BARRICKS TWO POLICE OFFICERS PROVE COMMUNITIES ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.partners," says Victor Neil, VP of Marketing and Development at HOPE Farm. "The pillars of Wisdom, Stature, Discipleship, and Relationship are embedded in everything we do in our leadership program."
Neil came to HOPE Farm six years ago after spending 21 years in marketing at Texas Christian University. A friend of Neil's whose wife already worked at HOPE Farm, set up the first meeting between Neil and Randle at Paris Coffee Shop off Magnolia Ave.
"Mr. Randle invited me to visit the campus to meet the young men in the program," says Neil. "I saw what a difference HOPE Farm was making in the lives of these young men."
A father to three young boys aged 9, 7, and 5, Neil understood the critical bond between father and son and how the absence of it could cause irreparable damage.
"I grew up overseas with a mother and a father, so I know what a family can look like," explains Neil. "These young men and their moms struggle for several reasons, and HOPE Farm is making a big difference in their lives by providing opportunities and access that otherwise would not exist."
HOPE Farm has grown from the initial campus in Morningside to include two other facilities: one in Como, established in 2009, and South Dallas, established in 2020. These Texas neighborhoods unfortunately harbor some of the highest crime and poverty rates.
Morningside has the lowest life expectancy in Texas, with single parents managing 84% of the homes there.
Como's crime rate is 70% higher than the national average, with violent crimes 67% higher.
South Dallas is in the ninth percentile for safety in the state and produced more inmates in Texas than any other zip code in 2019.
While the stats in these communities are glum, hope is not lost. Texas spends approximately $23,000 per inmate per year, so in the spirit of Randle and Crawford's mission to get fatherless children out of the prison system, HOPE Farm invests approximately $23K per boy per year, a proactive versus reactive approach. And when fatherless children account for 63% of youth suicides and 90% of homeless and runaway children, the need has never been greater.
In contrast to their surroundings, HOPE boys boast high school diplomas, graduate from college and become leaders in their community and the military.
But that's not to say that the boys' lives are any easier than their gang-affiliated counterparts. In the winter of 2022, the staff at the center stood by while one of its nine-year-old members suffered through the loss of his young mother, only 34 years old at the time of her death, a pain Neil knows all too well, losing his father in 1997. And the sounds of gunshots terrified the Morningside campus when a quadruple homicide occurred just a few blocks away.
Currently, the center specializes in literacy, as 2/3 of students unable to read proficiently by the end of fourth grade end up in jail or on welfare. Hope Farm's program accelerates students reading levels by one to two years after 40 to 60 hours in its program, with some boys increasing

their level by 4.8 years in only eight months. And even though staff can't take away the boy's hardships at home, they provide the necessary support to overcome them. During the pandemic in 2020, the facility served over 550 families by providing 1500 meals and sharing over 70 electronic devices with its students from March through May.
"We did everything in our power to help our families who were losing jobs, unable to pay rent, and had no internet service to be able to connect to schools and work," explained Sacher Dawson, Executive Director of HOPE Farm. "Low-income families were hit the hardest during Covid, and we slowly lost contact with over half of our HOPE
Farm families at the time because many were forced to relocate to survive."
Now, almost three years after the turmoil caused by the pandemic, the campuses are gaining traction. "This year has been one of tremendous growth and accomplishment," says Neil. "In September, we welcomed back a full house and currently have a waitlist for our Leadership Development Program."
The growth is proof that a dream spanning over 30 years to create a sense of family among fatherless boys has endurance, a vision stronger than any hardship because it's the will of a community to protect its children.

"These young men and their moms struggle for several reasons, and HOPE Farm is making a big difference in their lives by providing opportunities and access that otherwise would not exist."

WHAT’S IN A WORD?
Sometimes a quote sticks with you. A looping whisper in the ear as one goes about the day. Whether an epigram, proverb, or aphorism of unknown origin, words can have staying power for many reasons. For a group of successful businessmen in Fort Worth, a favorite quote becomes a motivational tool, pushing them to achieve at a high level and challenging them when they become complacent. Sometimes that motivation is a reminder of a loved one past or present, a trait they value, or a gentle nudge to be bold, but guaranteed, it is thought-provoking. So, what inspires the who’s who of Fort Worth?

“To be a better father, remember the things you liked and change the things you didn’t.”
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU AND HOW DOES IT APPLY TO YOUR LIFE?
As a father of three boys, I constantly work to improve the things I wanted to be done differently as a kid. It was a valuable lesson my dad taught me as I grew up. This thought process also applies to my business, employees, and customers. Working for other businesses taught me many great ways to run a company, but it also showed me a lot of bad habits of current retail and service-based businesses. With Blinds Brothers, I have implemented the good practices I witnessed and improved on the bad. I am always striving to improve our weaknesses and listen to feedback to create a better experience for everyone involved. American business is supposed to be about quality and customer service, and that is my highest priority.

A code inspector shared the quote with me a while ago when I was new to architecture. As a direct application to what I do for a living, it simply means that the right solution to a problem is not always the easiest one. It’s a matter of evaluating, double-checking, and ensuring you do the right things to achieve the right ending.

First quote - I love orthodontics, and I wake up every morning excited to go to work and see my patients and my team. I am truly blessed to be in a career I love and to live my dreams daily. The goal in my office is to put a smile on people’s faces every day, both through creating beautiful smiles and by trying to be genuinely good to people.
Second quote - There are times when life, running a business, and the general day-to-day can be daunting. But God is good all the time. The verse reminds me to give it all to the Lord, because he is ultimately in control, and I am his servant. The verse ties back to the first quote in that they both mean to take care of people and serve the Lord by doing good works through him. These are ultimately the two foundations of my life and my business.

THE ART OF THE CIGAR
Tulsa Hills Cigar Cellar and Market can help you find the perfect smoke.
BY BILL HERMANN

Cigar lovers often wax poetic when describing the pleasures of a good cigar. Their experiences are tactile. Dreamy. Famous cigar smokers — Sigmund Freud among them — have frequently compared cigar-smoking to romance. And it’s not just men who opine about the virtues of lingering over a Perdomo or Montecristo. “There’s something about smoking a cigar that feels like a celebration,” reflected actress Demi Moore. “There’s a quality, a workmanship, a passion that goes into the smoking of a fine cigar.”
Andrea Gardner, General Manager of Tulsa Hills Cigar Cellar & Market, oversees the operation of the store, and also is an impassioned consumer and connoisseur. “My first cigar was a Romeo y Julieta Reserve Real — an excellent smoke for newcomers,” she recalls with relish. “It was a spontaneous purchase while I was vacationing on the Isle of Capri. I remember sitting at a café in a beautiful, cobblestoned Italian piazza and being absolutely blown away by what I was tasting and feeling. At that point, I was in love.”
Cigar-smoking has grown in popularity among women and young adults, advises Gardner. She notes many people enjoy the socializing aspect of it, while some prefer to use it as a form of relaxation. “A good cigar calms me down and helps me detox from everything else going on in my life. It forces me to sit still and be present in that moment.”
Stepping inside the 300-square-foot humidor at the Cigar Cellar, browsers are surrounded by 900 premium, hand-rolled cigars from 57 brands.

“As with wine, what people look for in a cigar can vary by individual,” she explains. “Each person’s palate is unique and each experience with a cigar is distinctive. In general, when people buy a premium cigar, they are looking for quality craftsmanship and often something that has specific taste, aroma or even burn characteristics.”
Gardner appreciates the attention to detail involved in producing a superior product. “Every cigar is a beautiful, handcrafted piece of art,” she says, with devotion. “I love getting a new smoker in the store because it is exciting to be at the beginning of what may become a life-long love affair. We can teach that person how to get started and guide him or her in finding something they will love.”
“AS WITH WINE, WHAT PEOPLE LOOK FOR IN A CIGAR CAN VARY BY INDIVIDUAL. EACH PERSON’S PALATE IS UNIQUE AND EACH EXPERIENCE WITH A CIGAR IS DISTINCTIVE.”

TOASTING THE AMERICAN SPIRIT
A TOUR OF AMERICA'S ONLY BOURBON TRAIL

The bluegrass state of Kentucky with the Appalachian Mountains is indisputably known as the Mecca of bourbon and the location of America’s only Bourbon Trail.
The Kentucky Bourbon Trail, established in 1999, is dotted with a total of 37 distilleries scattered throughout the regions of Louisville, Western Kentucky, Bardstown, Lexington and North Kentucky.
For bourbon aficionados and road trip lovers alike, the trail promises scenic country drives, historic architecture, and an abundance of restaurants and tasting rooms with some distilleries spanning more than 100 miles apart.
The most popular bourbon distillery locations one might expect to see along the trail are: Angles Envy, Maker’s Mark, Michter’s, Wild Turkey, Heaven Hill, Lux Row, Old Forester, Four Roses, Evan Williams, Bulleit, and Jim Beam.
Within each distillery and on its grounds, bourbon lovers can expect to find a variety of bourbon price points, flavor profiles, distilling and aging techniques, and historical points of interest. Each location offers a variety of tour options: some focusing on the chemistry of bourbon distillation, the art of tasting, the barrel charring process, or the rich (and checkered) history of bourbon’s origins.
One constant seems to remain—most Kentucky distilleries cannot broach the topic of their favorite drink without also offering a glimpse of its history. The name “bourbon” hails from the original Bourbon County, which was a region carved from a portion of the Fayette County of Virginia in 1785. The county, which belonged to the then-brand-new state of Kentucky, was named in honor of the French House of Bourbon to show gratitude to King Louis XVI for his vital assistance during the American Revolutionary War.
Prior to its exodus from the region, loads of white oak barrels cut from the forests of Arkansas were first branded with the Bourbon County label. The county logo branded on the barrels soon gave way to its shorthand references: Bourbon. The rest is, quit literally, history.
The oldest operational distillery in Kentucky is Maker’s Mark, which began distilling in 1805 and has since been recognized as a National Historic Landmark. In 1964, a Congressional Resolution declared bourbon to be an indigenous product of the United States. This distinction renders bourbon as the official American Spirit. To be recognized as a bourbon, a spirit must meet specific and strict requirements set forth by law. In fact, bourbon distillation marks one of America’s very first examples of a consumer protection law with the establishment of the “Bottled-in-Bond” Act in 1897 (The Bottled-in-Bond designation have bourbon standards which supersede those of single-malt Scotch).
All bourbon starts as what distillers refer to as White Lightning— an uncolored, unaged, and unflavored whiskey. Whiskey functions as the stem cell of bourbon—it’s the bare bones and the foundation. This whiskey must be made with mash consisting of at least 51% corn. As long as that ratio is met, the mash may also include other grains such as rye and barley. During the distillation process, the liquid must not supersede a proof of 160, and must not supersede a proof of 125 at the time it’s poured into barrels to begin the aging process. All bourbon must be aged in new, charred, white oak barrels for a minimum of two years before it is finally bottled at 80 proof or higher. No other dyes or flavors

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail, established in 1999, is dotted with a total of 37 distilleries.
may be introduced into the distilling or aging process if a bourbon is to retain its namesake.
Even though 95% of bourbon is distilled in Kentucky, bourbon does not need to be distilled in the state to be considered authentic. Most bourbon was historically made in Kentucky due to its geography. The rich source of limestone in Kentucky earth acts as a natural aquifer, purifying the water and removing the more peaty flavors one would find in spirits distilled with earthier water quality, such as Scotch. The varied temperatures, humidity levels, and weather patterns in the Kentucky region cause the white oak barrels to contrast and swell. This unique aging process gives bourbon its signature amber hue as well as its sweet and dynamic flavor.
Guests interested in seeing each distillery along the trail should plan on the trip taking at least 7 days, according to the updated schedule provided on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail website.
While the tour itinerary is flexible enough to have many starting points, the official “start” of the trail can be found at the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center located at the Frazier Museum on Historic Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville. The destinations along the trail can be planned a number of ways: by distillery, by region, or by organized tour itinerary. Some distillery locations are packed as tightly as an 8-mile radius, with the average tour lasting about 90 minutes.
Guests who schedule an official KBT tour receive a Kentucky Bourbon Trail passport at the beginning of their journey and have the pleasure of watching stamps fill their pages as they makes their way through the Kentucky countryside. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail Passports do not expire, so travelers may rest assured that they can complete any
unfinished portions of their tours at a later date if the tastings become too rigorous. Each distillery along the trail has its own admission fee for tours but offer more than one tour option at each location. Some Distilleries, such as Four Roses and Jim Beam, offer two distillery tour locations. Guests are welcome to visit both locations if they desire but will receive only one stamp in their Bourbon Trail passports.
For those who want to travel off the beaten path, several famous distilleries in the area do not appear on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail list. One of the more famous of these is the Buffalo Trace Distillery, responsible for distilling bourbon of that name as well as the more rare and sought-after bottles of Blanton’s and E.H. Taylor. The Buffalo Trace distillery is located on a national landmark and offers free tastings, as well as Ghost tours for those who are interested in a different kind of spirit.
For those who want to fit the Kentucky Bourbon Trail into their 2023 plans, several distilleries plan on offering scheduled tours. For a complete list of distilleries, tour schedules, tour booking details, and frequently asked questions, visit https://kybourbontrail.com.
For those who want to travel off the beaten path, several famous distilleries in the area do not appear on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail list.
