Rooted in Tulsa, Growing Together

As a full-time working mother of four, life is a beautiful mix of chaos and joy—and there’s no place I’d rather raise my children (and two fur babies) than right here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From early morning drives to school to weekend sports and outings with our dog, Tulsa has a rhythm that fits our family just right.

One of my favorite things about this city is how easy it is to get around. In a world where time often feels too short, Tulsa gives it back—shorter commutes mean more dinners at the table and more bedtime stories read aloud. Although it’s a city, it often feels more like a small town with short commutes, familiar faces, and neighborhoods that feel like little communities within a larger one.

Tulsa has so much to offer for those of us raising children and/or doing life with our pets. When it’s time to play, few places rival The Gathering Place, our crown jewel public park where my kids can run free, explore, and connect with other families in a space that truly belongs to ALL of us.

But it’s not just the parks. Tulsa’s creative spirit is alive and growing—art walks, open-air markets, colorful murals tucked into every corner. Our kids get to grow up surrounded by artists, makers, and creative entrepreneurs who show them how to dream boldly and live colorfully. This city pours itself into community— from its dog-friendly trails and coffee shops to its support of local schools and small businesses who truly value the hearts of Tulsans.

Tulsa isn’t just where we live. It’s where we belong. It’s where neighbors become friends, where families can thrive, and where shared values—like raising kind, healthy children—are reflected in the spaces and faces around us.

Here’s to this season of life—messy, magical, and rooted deeply in Tulsa.

Tails & Ales Summer Safety Advice for Your Pup

Oklahoma heat is no joke—dogs overheat fast. Walk during cooler hours, and use the 7-second rule to protect paws from hot pavement. Always bring water and take breaks in the shade. Never leave dogs in cars, even briefly. Watch for signs of overheating like heavy panting or vomiting. With a little prep, summer adventures can be safe and fun for both you and your furry best friend.

TAILS & ALES

Mark Gorman Has a Mission to Create Community Through Coffee, Cocktails, and Canines

The purpose behind Tails & Ales is close to the heart for the founder, Mark Gorman. The inspiration was born in a defining moment when he realized the need for a safe, welcoming space where people and dogs could connect, relax, and unwind together. That moment sparked a mission. Alongside his wife, Amy, and family, Mark set out to build a true third space in

“The goal of this space is not to just be a dog park, it's to build community.”

Tulsa, blending the spirit of a park, a coffee shop, and a neighborhood bar into one vibrant community hub.

Mark and his wife Amy have always sought ways to build community, especially those that included their pup. After adopting an energetic dog early in their marriage, they quickly learned he needed regular exercise. To keep him content, they began visiting a local dog park routinely.

At the same time, Mark transitioned to working a remote corporate job. While it offered more flexibility, the role left him craving social connection. The dog park filled that void. As the weeks passed, Mark and Amy kept seeing the same familiar faces at the park. Slowly, acquaintances became friends, and the park became their community’s front porch — a space where shared interests and conversations forged meaningful connections. “Before we knew it, some of the best friends that we had were the people we had met at this dog park,” Mark explains.

But over time, the experience grew complicated. Because it was a public park, the responsibility for safety and rule enforcement was left to the park goers. Occasionally, dogs with poor social behavior arrived, often with inattentive owners. That unpredictability began to tarnish what had once felt like a sanctuary. “It was a love-hate relationship,” Mark recalls.

One day during a typical visit, a particularly aggressive dog entered. Mark immediately sensed the familiar unease. Within seconds of being let off leash, the dog charged toward theirs. Amy instinctively stepped in to protect their pup and suffered a bite to her hand. They quickly rushed to the ER to attend to the wound and take precautions against any health risks, as they had no way of knowing the dog’s health or vaccination status. Though she physically recovered fully, their trust in the park never did. In that moment, Mark’s long-standing concerns crystallized. They needed a better way — one that preserved the community they loved, without the looming fear.

That’s when the vision for Tails & Ales, which had taken root over the months, finally began to grow.

Mark and Amy dreamed of a space where the environment was curated, safety was prioritized, and connection was effortless. A space where dog owners could relax, knowing every dog was held to the same behavioral and health standards.

While starting Tails & Ales had its challenges, backed by a strong purpose, Mark and Amy pushed forward. Eighteen months after its inception, they found the perfect location to bring their dream to reality. On May 1st, 2024, Tails & Ales officially opened at 1903 S Boston Avenue.

Today, Tails & Ales is thriving — not just as a private dog park, but as a genuine community space. Every dog is vaccinated, fixed, and temperament-tested. Staff attendants ensure safe play, so owners can truly unwind. Whether you’re sipping a coffee, enjoying a cocktail, or chatting with someone new who shares your love for dogs and most likely other things, one intention is clear: this space was made for connection. There, community comes first. You don’t even need a dog to experience it.

The City of Muskogee contracted with JONESPLAN to add an event lawn, a demonstration garden, a formal fountain, and a Butterfly Papilion to their popular Honor Heights Park.

The Butterfly Papilion is the centerpiece of the project, constructed of a double-height timber framed core with a translucent polygal roof and walls. The wings of the enclosure are a greenhouse structure covered in netting, allowing for free and safe movement of butterflies throughout the spaces and around visitors. The park is a beautiful space for interaction with flora and fauna, a peaceful setting for outings, and a great backdrop for special events.

Little

Oklahoma’s Only Free Education and Therapy Center for Children of All Disabilities

Lighthouse

If you’ve ever driven past 36th and Yale, chances are you’ve seen Little Light House, but for you, it might be nothing more than another landmark on your drive. For the children with disabilities who receive its services, Little Light House is hope itself. It’s a community who sees them for more than their diagnosis. A place where “never” becomes “not yet.” A place where miracles happen in real-time, all the time — a daily rhythm of transformation and joy.

In 1972, two young mothers, Sheryl Poole and Marcia Mitchell, discovered there were no early intervention services available in Tulsa for their daughters born with visual impairments. Taking a leap of faith, they opened Little Light House: a Christian, nonprofit, tuition-free Developmental Center that provides specialized education and therapy services for children of all disabilities.

Thanks to the generosity of the Tulsa community, what began as a small house with five students and one special education teacher has grown into a 60,000-square-foot facility serving over 220 children and families with a staff of 83 people.

The LLH team consists of certified special education teachers, licensed physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, assistive technology professionals, registered nurses, and associate teachers. Because LLH does not charge insurance, these professionals are able to collaborate in what they call their transdisciplinary team.

The transdisciplinary team develops an individualized education and therapy plan for every student, creating specific goals they work toward throughout the year. Using this method, they have seen their students accomplish incredible feats, including learning to walk, talk, eat, play, and live independently and confidently.

Little Light House has three main programs: the Developmental Center, Family Learning Center, and Outreach. Students in DC attend class daily, and students in FLC attend weekly sessions with a caregiver. Through their online Academy, blog, podcast, and conferences, their Outreach program resources, equips, and trains people around the world to create more inclusive communities.

THE LIFESAVING WORK OF ANIMAL EMERGENCY CENTER

LIFE WITH PAWS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KACEY GILPIN

Whether it’s the quiet presence of a cat curled at your feet or the playful energy of a puppy dashing through the yard, pets bring warmth, joy, and comfort to our everyday lives. Research supports what pet lovers already know. According to the American Pet Products Association, 97% of pet owners consider their animals an integral part of the family, and studies link pet ownership to lower stress, improved heart health, and greater social con-

“It takes a certain kind of person to handle the pace, the pressure, the heartbreak, and still show up every day with compassion,” says the hospital’s director, who has worked at AEC for nearly thirty years. That compassion extends beyond their four-legged patients, as the team understands that emergency visits can be just as overwhelming for pet parents. They take the time to explain diagnoses, treatment plans, and next steps, making sure pet

nection. While our pets give us so much, it’s our job to return the favor with care that keeps them healthy, safe, and thriving.

That’s where the team at Tulsa’s Animal Emergency Center (AEC) comes in. Founded in 1987 by a group of local veterinarians, AEC was established as a clinic focused exclusively on emergency care to provide support for pets throughout the Tulsa community. Nearly four decades later, AEC remains privately owned and true to its original purpose. The clinic is open 24/7, every day of the year, and staffed entirely by professionals who are solely dedicated to emergency medicine.

owners feel informed and supported through every decision.

There are, of course, the cases that remain etched in memory and reaffirm why this work is so meaningful. One is the story of Chester Brown, a bloodhound who was accidentally locked inside a garden shed during the peak of a sweltering summer heat wave. By the time he arrived at the clinic, he was in grave condition. His survival was uncertain, but thanks to a week of intensive, around-the-clock care and a devoted family who visited him each day, Chester made a slow but steady recovery. When he finally stood up on his own and walked out of the clinic,

“WHILE OUR PETS GIVE US SO MUCH, IT’S OUR JOB TO RETURN THE FAVOR WITH CARE THAT KEEPS THEM HEALTHY, SAFE, AND THRIVING.”

tail wagging and eyes bright, it was nothing short of remarkable. "That one still sticks with me," the director reflects. Although AEC is built to respond in moments of crisis, the team is quick to stress the importance of prevention as a first line of defense. The foundation of a healthy, happy life for any pet begins with the basics: annual veterinary checkups, a nourishing diet, regular exercise, and meaningful connection with their people. “They’re deeply social creatures,” the director explains. “Spending time with them, talking to them, simply being there…it all matters more than people realize.” While the hope is that you’ll never face an emergency, knowing that the Animal Emergency Center stands ready can bring immense peace of mind. They do more than treat symptoms; they honor the deep bond between you and your pet, seeing each animal as a cherished family member.

WHISKING UP CONFIDENCE

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.

Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error, they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.

Why Cooking with Kids is More Than Just Making Meals

Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.

The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.

It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.

Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

ANIMAL Crackers

Ingredients:

• 1 cup and 2 tablespoons white flour

• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/2 cup oatmeal

• 4 tablespoons honey

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

• 4 tablespoons buttermilk

• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.

3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.

4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.

Enjoy!
