We hadn’t heard much about Episcopal education.

We’re a Christian family. Living in a city full of good faith-based schools. Comfortable with our beliefs. We were looking for a school that honored our convictions, a community that celebrates difference, AND an atmosphere of inquiry where our kids witness many traditions.

Holland Hall spoke to us— as the one school in Tulsa offering all they need for ALL they’re becoming.

The possibilities of and. The assurance of all.

NOW OPEN WELCOME TO 2018. The diets have begun, gym memberships are in full swing, and the focus is on health. But what about your skin? It’s the largest organ in your body and needs some TLC. Dr. Dr. Kesha Buster, MD FAAD

Kesha Buster with VibrantSkin Dermatology and Laser offers the following tips to start the new year off right. CHECK YOUR BIRTHDAY SUIT Just as self-breast exams can identify cancer, checking your skin can save your life. Dr. Buster encourages you to follow the American Academy of Dermatology’s recommendation to check your birthday suit on your birthday. Look for the ABCs— Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color (multiple), Diameter bigger than pencil eraser, and Evolving (changing). See a board-certified dermatologist for anything that fits above—or for a spot that doesn’t look like anything else on you. WASH YOUR FACE, TWICE A DAY Wash your face twice daily using gentle cleansers. Be sure anything you apply to your face (cleanser, make-up, moisturizer, etc.) is non-comedogenic. This means it won’t clog your pores. Many over-thecounter products are good—look for “non-comedogenic” on the label. PROTECT YOUR SKIN Sun protection is your first defense against skin cancer—and wrinkles. French author Jules Renard once wrote, “Wrinkles are engraved smiles.” That’s all well and good, but most of us prefer less, rather than more. Dr. Buster says, “UV is the #1 culprit for skin aging. It produces DNA damage, causing wrinkles, brown spots, blood vessels/ redness, and skin cancer. Avoiding excess sun, wearing long

sleeves/hats and/or applying SPF 30+ daily can dramatically slow skin aging. Making sun protection part of your daily routine is my single most effective and affordable anti-aging tip.” Gravitational aging and wrinkles caused by fat loss or bone shrinkage as we age aren’t as easy to control, but there are ways to reduce their severity such as laser resurfacing, Botox®/Dysport® and dermal fillers. ENJOY PROPER NUTRITION Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants is good for your whole body, including your skin. Dr. Buster says although there isn’t a lot of research backing up oral supplements for skin care, vitamins C and E in certain topical forms can buffer damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. These molecules can harm skin cells and cause signs of aging. One pill that helps: the antioxidant polypodium leucotomas in Heliocare fights the effects of UV to protect your skin from the inside out. STOP SMOKING Dr. Buster says, “Smoking severely damages skin and increases risk of skin and mouth cancer. It destroys collagen, reduces oxygen supply, and slows healing.” Although there are procedures to reduce the damage, Dr. Buster says she can’t completely reverse it. If you do smoke, consider 2018 your year to kick the habit. Your skin will love you for it.

TIGHTEN UP Even diet and exercise can’t eliminate stubborn fat. Especially fat in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and under the chin. Coolsculpting is an innovative, non-invasive way to contour your body by freezing away unwanted fat that can’t be reduced with diet and exercise. Best of all, there are no needles or downtime, and the results are long-term. Dr. Buster says, “Coolsculpting plus Z Wave is a dual-modality system for non-surgical, non-invasive fat reduction through controlled cooling. With Coolsculpting, the frozen fat cells die, and your body naturally gets rid of the dead cells to leave a more sculpted version of yourself.” When

performed

immediately

after

Coolsculpting, Z Wave treatment has been shown to dramatically improve the results of Coolsculpting while also reducing discomfort and post-treatment swelling. She says, “To our knowledge, VibrantSkin Dermatology and Laser is the only practice in Tulsa that includes Z Wave to improve fat cell reduction over traditional Coolsculpting alone. The difference is real—that’s why we include a complimentary Z Wave treatment after every Coolsculpting session.” DO YOUR RESEARCH Remember that cosmetic treatments are still medical procedures that, in the wrong hands, can cause severe complications including blindness, infection, and scarring. Ask the credentials of anyone you plan to see. Dr. Kesha Buster is a board-certified dermatologist (American Board of Dermatology) skilled in all aspects of dermatology including medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. She has expertise in neurotoxins (e.g., Botox®, Dysport®) to smooth wrinkles and treat excessive sweating, dermal fillers for lines and scar recontouring, and laser and light-based treatment of wrinkles, scars,

The need for Orthodontic intervention for a patient is usually a simple matter of a few teeth erupting into an incorrect position within the dental arch. Establishing a new “eruption position” for these few teeth, greatly establishes better esthetics, a better occlusion or bite and can, in many cases, reestablish bone deficiencies caused from these incorrect eruption patterns.

Tulsa’s most experienced staff of Emergency and Critical Care Veterinarians, Registered Veterinary Technicians and Assistants stand ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to take care of YOUR pets’ emergency medical needs.

Tiernan was the first "Master Affiliate" of the FastBraces® program in this area and will soon reach the "Senior Master Affiliate" status which indicates he has met a set of extremely high quality parameters. THE Summit Club’s Executive Chef William Lyle PRESENTS HEALTHY SPECIALTIES HEALTHY EATING IS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST THIS NEW YEAR FOR THE SUMMIT CLUB’S EXECUTIVE CHEF WILLIAM LYLE, WHO UNVEILS SOME OF HIS SECRETS TO COOKING HEALTHY AND EATING THE RIGHT FOODS AS PART OF AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. The Summit Club, with its amazing view of downtown Tulsa, has been Tulsa’s premier dining and social club and event facility since 1967. Located in the heart of downtown Tulsa, on the 30th, 31st and 32nd floors of the Bank of America Building, the Club offers a variety of dining and special event options, from the Penthouse Dining Room and the Wine Room, a private dining room with a spectacular skyline view of downtown, to the Summit Grill and the Vista Room.

About Chef Bill Lyle CHEF BILL BRINGS YEARS OF RESTAURANT Chef Bill Lyle, executive chef, discusses the importance of eating the right kinds of foods as part of a healthy lifestyle.

EXPERIENCE TO THE CLUB. He spent the last four years as executive chef at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and has served as executive chef at Ella’s restaurant at the Inn at Carnall Hall. He also worked closely with the University of Arkansas Hospitality Department to open a kitchen to host training and internship opportunities. “As we create new flavors and entrees, I enjoy working with local farms to bring the freshest ingredients to the table,” he said. One of Lyle’s healthy specialties is 413 Farms chicken liver pate with a black currant jelly, served with brioche toast points. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle means being active but also eating healthy. As Chef Bill explained, eating the right foods can still include good fats. “Eating healthy doesn’t necessarily mean you have to reduce fats, it’s more about eating the good fats from good meats,” he said. “The dishes I create are made with olive oil, fresh produce and meats that are not artificially grown or raised with chemicals. Because these meats from our local farms are vegan fed and are hormone-free, it ensures the food is fresh and of the highest quality.” Chef Bill points out there are a number of healthy substituting secrets that can be used for different dishes.

Tulsa Lifestyle | January 2018

The Duck Liver Pate features 413 Farms chicken liver pate with a black currant jelly, served with brioche toast points.

“Cauliflower is a versatile vegetable that is taking the place of dairy in everything from mac-n-cheese to a number of sauces,” he said. “By simply replacing key ingredients with healthier alternatives, it makes for a more flavorful and healthier meal.” He works closely with general manager Jared Jordan, a certified sommelier, to pair entrees with the perfect wine. It helps that the wine list at The Summit Club is one of the most expansive in Tulsa. “The pate and pork belly are fairly French in food style and both traditionally pair well with wines from France, so I’ve paired them with a Beaujolais,” explained Jordan. “Beaujolais is producing some of the most stellar wines in France these days, and the last several vintages have been spectacular. The other great thing about Beaujolais is that you get killer wines that are as good as, if not better than, wines from Burgundy – at half the price.” Specifically, Jordan paired both entrees with a 2014 Domaine Marcel LaPierre Morgon from Beaujolais – a wine that features notes of vibrant cherry, a very fresh acidity and very well structured tannins, and a hint of lingering spice.

Duck Liver Pate 40 oz. Liver (trimmed) 7 oz. Red Onion (small dice/ice water) 4 T. Fresh Thyme 4 T. Fresh Tarragon 14 oz. White Wine (weight) 1/2 T. Salt 1 t. Sugar 14 oz. Cream (weight) 14 oz. Butter (weight) + Sear liver hard on one side, cool. + Sweat onion, add herbs and deglaze with wine, reduce by 2/3, add liver for last two minutes of cooking. + Add cream and sugar with blender on, then emulsify butter into the mix, check salt. + Press through chinois twice. Pour into desired container and chill for 20 minutes. Pour just enough melted butter or duck fat to cover the entire surface of each pate and chill for at least 2 more hours.

LETS GO BIKING! Thinking of getting off road this winter on a mountain bike and changing your boring exercise routine? Don’t let the bumpy roads and knobby tires scare you. Mountain Biking for the beginner can be a magical and fun experience. When cold temperatures move in and the wind kicks up, you’ll find an abundance of riders, both beginner and experienced, enjoying miles of Oklahoma trails.

BIKING

So, grab your old bike or rent one of Phat Tires premium mountain bikes and take a trip to the trails. Unsure where to ride? Tulsa Metro area has 80 miles of bicycle and pedestrian trails for every skill level. Check out INCOG.org for the latest Tulsa Area Trail guide or join Phat Bike at their weekly Thursday night ride at Turkey Mountain. They'll help you navigate the beginner trails. Unsure what to ride? The staff at Phat Tire will help you find the appropriate bike. Mountain bikes offer many different types and styles depending on the overall goal of the bike and rider. Amy at Phat Tire likes to ask, “What do you see yourself doing on the bike? Where do you see yourself riding? How often do you see yourself riding? And what do you want to accomplish when purchasing your first off-road bike?” The best tip is to purchase a bike based on where the majority of the riding will occur— from scenic roads, gravel rides, paved greenways, and technical single-track. And Phat Tire will make sure you're on the best bike and ideal trail for you. Unsure you’re ready to purchase? Try renting. Phat Tire has a large assortment of styles and sizes to suit almost any rider. They'll help outfit you with a helmet, lights and lock. And Phat Tire will apply all rental fees towards the purchase of a new bike! Check out their RENTAL menu on their website:

GET

REVVED UP FOR FITNESS BECOMING ONE'S BEST SELF THROUGH FITNESS

Tulsa Lifestyle | January 2018

T

“Whether you are just beginning your fitness journey or tired of the same old routine and results, REVVED is REVVOLUTION YOU. Get REVVED and together we will get you there faster than you ever thought possible"

HERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME,” DOROTHY IN THE WIZARD OF OZ SAID. Home is of course where the heart is; it’s the place we feel most comfortable. So during life, we are all always looking for homes away home where we can feel part of something and at ease. This is exactly the concept that Revved Fitness owners Kevin and Emily Wilson bring to their establishments. The couple has spent years formulating a concept of community and family

within the workout arena. After years in the physical fitness industry and own-

ing gyms, they invested in the idea of bringing local people together to grow in the concept of helping others be their best self. This idea of working next to others and growing along-side others on their fitness journey has produced tremendous results, Kevin said. “When Kevin and I came up with Revved Fitness, our idea was to bring everything we loved about our experiences into one place and leave out everything we disliked. We devised what is a group physical training facility where everyone who walks in goes through our programming. So, everyone who walks through our doors is never left behind,” Emily said. So what exactly is such a community and how does it work? First off, Revved Fitness is a boutique type of business, meaning it focuses on unique aspects of an industry. Think yoga or pilates as examples of what is considered specialized workout facilities as opposed to a gym with a one size fits all mentality. Although the examples mentioned above are more heavily attended by women, Revved Fitness’ concept appeals to both genders. “Revved Fitness is a high-intensity interval training concept where the client will burn between 500 and 1000 calories during the one-hour workout session,” Kevin said.

LOCATIONS AND CONTACT INFO

He further explained that due to the method of the high-intensity sessions, clients will continue to burn calories at an accelerated rate for the following 36-48 hours after the

completion of the session. The workout that keeps working long after you do, he added. As for how this works, he explained the science of E.P.O.C. (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption). Essentially, the body uses more oxygen after exercise than before exercise, and we expend more calories during our recovery from exercise

than we do before exercise. This recovery process requires energy, which is why

cise. H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training) seems to elicit the greatest E.P.O.C. response. A general rule of thumb is that the higher the intensity (and the more

GET REVVED UP

(CON TI N U ED)

In addition to the sessions, the team members at Revved use body image scanning and other tools of modern science to allow their clients to see the actual results that they are achieving, Kevin added that they are the only facility which offers this. They also have each client wear heart rate monitors. This is then projected onto a screen allowing for the trainers to observe and tweak each workout for optimal efficiency and for the clients to actually see the calories they are burning. The heart monitors serve multiple purposes though. Since these sessions are group sessions where clients workout next to each other, the personal trainers leading those groups can optimize each person’s session, which can be progressed or regressed by using all of the stats from the monitors to make sure clients are getting the most out of the sessions while still remaining within health limits of what their bodies can handle. In addition, it allows for the beginner to work out next to someone who is much more advanced in fitness. Kevin reiterated that these are group workouts with a personal trainer leading the sessions. As such, a community bond is created between the clients themselves and their trainer. In many ways, it’s like having one’s own cheerleading squad to help keep them focused and supported during their fitness journey.

“WE WORK TOWARD HELPING OUR CLIENTS REACH THEIR GOALS, WHETHER THOSE ARE PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL OR SPIRITUAL,” KEVIN SAID. WE APPROACH EACH CLIENT ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. WE USE A MASTER WORKOUT CONTAINING SEVEN DIFFERENT WORKOUTS WITHIN IT; ONE FOR EACH DAY OF THE WEEK. THESE ARE USED IN TWO-WEEK INTERVALS AND THEN A COMPLETELY NEW MASTER WORKOUT IS WRITTEN. THIS ALLOWS FOR FRESH CONCEPTS AND KEEPS CLIENTS’ ROUTINES FROM GROWING STALE. “The advantage that Revved Fitness has over other fitness centers is that each client gets the personal trainer experience, but without the cost associated with actually hiring one. And this is in a community atmosphere where those helping you in the fitness journey actually care about the results of each client,” Emily said. In addition, they touch on many other aspects of their client’s lives ranging from nutrition, supplements and lowering stress levels. “We’ve created something that we love and we hope that people will gravitate toward us,” Emily said. Kevin and Emily opened their first Revved Fitness on Brookside in January of this year and have a new location opening in Broken Arrow this month. There is also a franchise location in South Tulsa operated by Adam and Breean Akins. Kevin explained that whichever location one chooses to utilize, they will find the same experience as they experience in their home location. All locations are connected with the same master workout sessions and so no matter which one a client visits, they will still feel right at home on their journey to becoming their best self. Fitness is a journey. Whether one is traveling from Oz like Dorothy or across town to reach it, there is still no place like home and no other place like Revved to make you feel like you are there. 30

TRAVEL DESTINATION

VENICE AT A GLANCE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KATHY SLEMP

IF YOU WANT TO STAY ACTIVE AND BURN SOME CALORIES BUT ALSO LOVE FOOD, CONSIDER VISITING VENICE, ITALY. Venice is a walking city. You can reach any point in Venice by foot—along the banks of the canals, on the paved streets, through the neighborhood squares, and over the 400 or so canal bridges. Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs. There is so much history, so many little stores, and lots of walkways with twists and turns. You can’t help but walk the entire day and not realize how far you’ve walked, how many times you’ve gotten lost, how much food you’ve enjoyed and how many stops you made and marveled at the architectural feat if this beautiful city.

Holland Hall Coaches

Promote the Value of an Active Lifestyle TULSA’S HOLLAND HALL SCHOOL KNOWS THERE’S MUCH MORE TO A GOOD EDUCATION THAN ACADEMICS – AND IT INVOLVES STAYING ACTIVE. In addition to offering students a challenging education experience with a college preparatory curriculum, the preK-12 Episcopal school makes it very clear to students that having an active lifestyle is an equally important part of the learning experience. From Holland Hall’s 21 physical education programs for 7th-12th graders to the school’s competitive athletics programs, that concept is ingrained into every aspect of students’ lives. According to several Holland Hall coaches, there are obvious reasons why it’s important to help students achieve this vital balance.
