Kids and Pets! Kids love their pets - and for good reason. Our pets teach responsibility, companionship and aid in social development.
Pets are more than just animals; they are friends, confidants, and sources of unconditional love. And though we may face challenges as pet owners and parents, the rewards far outweigh the struggles. Pets teach our kids about compassion and the beauty of simple joys.

For children, having a pet can be a transformative experience. It provides them with a sense of security and companionship that is incomparable. Whether it’s a dog eagerly awaiting their return from school, a cat patiently listening to them read, or even a small pet like a guinea pig providing endless fascination, these relationships are integral to their growth and happiness.
Meet Daisy Roo, our Dog Cover Contest winner! Learn how this furry friend has become not only a special part of his family but also the Austin College community. We also sit down with Pet Wants Texoma and hear how we can best feed and care for our four legged friends. With a new storefront coming soon to Sherman, Pet Wants is sure to become our one stop shop for all kinds of pet goodies.

PREMIUM PET CARE PRODUCTS FOR YOUR PREMIUM PETS

Jeff and Sharilynn Kagey are excited to bring their new pet business to the Texoma area. You may have seen them at local markets, as they offer premium quality pet care products to our pet families.
Sharilynn has lived in Texoma since 2012, and Jeff has lived here since 2021. When asked how they got interested in starting their new pet care business, Sharilynn was quick to reply, “We have both always loved animals and grew up with dogs." Jeff said, "Sharilynn has also always been interested in the health and wellness of our dogs. Always reading labels and searching for the most nutritious options for them. Focused on dogs living optimal, happy, and long lives, we began discussing the possibility of opening a business in 2023 and discovered the Pet Wants brand in 2024. After extensive research, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to positively impact our community by doing something we are passionate about. We participated in our first market in August 2024!”
As pet owners themselves, the Kageys understand the importance pets hold for their owners. They have two pet dogs named Willow and Shadow. "Willow found us when we were on a weekend getaway at Lake Eufaula. She was in the middle of the road, waiting for us to rescue her. We found Shadow on Facebook. He and his sisters had been dumped, and the person who found them wanted to find homes for them. Willow is a senior lady, and Shadow is a feisty puppy.”
They started their business offering mobile pet product services. Mrs. Kagey says, “We felt the area lacked a pet boutique that catered to pets and
their owners. We are at local markets and events weekly and offer free delivery with online orders. We offer a line of premium pet food, made in small batches specifically for Pet Wants. We sell the food by the pound and have 7 dog formulas and 3 cat formulas. We have a line of Pet Wants cookies, freeze-dried treats and food, natural chews, and 'spaw' products. We want to be a resource for pet parents, arming them with information and products they need to give their pets the happiest and healthiest life possible.”
When asked what sets their business apart from other pet businesses, Mrs. Kagey states, “We have access to a certified pet nutritionist, and we have our own line of pet food that is nutritionally dense and made in small batches. It is cooked at a lower temperature, ensuring optimal nutritional quality. We make rotational feeding easy since customers can purchase food by the pound. All of our products are free of artificial preservatives and chemicals. We offer personalized service and food consultations.”
“Local shelters are our priority. When we have our store, we want to host adoption events as much as possible so that pets that have been abandoned can find a loving and forever home.”
After finding success with their mobile business, the Kageys have decided to open a local storefront in the Texoma area to better serve their customers.
“We are in the process of building out our store at Westwood Village in Sherman. When we open our
store, we will offer a wider variety of products and brands. We will also have a dog wash. We will continue to provide delivery in the Texoma area, but we are excited that our customers will now be able to shop with us at their convenience, both online and in-store. We look forward to hosting events at our store, allowing pets and their owners to enjoy a fun outing together. We will open this year." Mrs. Kagey says they have really enjoyed being in the Texoma area. “We love that it is small town friendly. We have always enjoyed shopping locally, and the Texoma area boasts a multitude of great small businesses! We have a heart for Westwood Village and want it to be a destination with an eclectic mix of small business owners."
Being part of the community is important to the Kageys.
“Local shelters are our priority. When we have our store, we want to host adoption events as much as possible so that pets that have been abandoned can find a loving and forever home. We also want to promote the small businesses and vendors that we have met at markets over the past year. We plan to partner with them to showcase their products/services through events at the store.”

PECAN GROVE East PARK
Since the ribbon cutting in April, Sherman's Pecan Grove East Park has enjoyed a busy summer as the region's only all-inclusive park. What sets an "all-inclusive park" like Pecan Grove East Park apart? Features like sensory domes, play panels, musical instruments, and quiet areas cater to a wide range of needs. Secure swings, accessible slides, and climbing structures with varying challenge levels ensure everyone can enjoy the park regardless of ability.
Pecan Grove East Park is in the heart of Knollwood and offers an ideal setting for walkers and runners. In 2024, the Sherman Noon and Evening Lions Club collaborated with the City of Sherman to help make the all-inclusive playground a reality. Additional contributions were made by the International and Texas State Lions Foundations, the Texoma Health Foundation, and the Dorset Foundation, in addition to numerous local donations from businesses and individuals.
The Sherman Rotary Club, including the Grayson County Rotary Club, supported the development of Sherman's first Story Walk. This walk combines outdoor activity with literacy by featuring pages of children's books.
Many community leaders envisioned this park, which is designed to allow people of all ages and abilities to play and experience the outdoors together, feeling welcome for many years to come.

WHISKING UP CONFIDENCE

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Why Cooking with Kids is More Than Just Making Meals

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.
Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error, they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.
Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.
The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.
It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.
Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

ANIMAL Crackers
Ingredients:
• 1 cup and 2 tablespoons white flour
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 cup oatmeal
• 4 tablespoons honey
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 4 tablespoons buttermilk
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon
CONTINUED >

Steps:
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
EMBRACE THE MESS, STAY PATIENT, AND FOCUS ON THE FUN.

2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.
3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.
4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.
Enjoy!

DRESSED TO EXPRESS
Expressing your personality with a dress is all about using color, shape, and detail to tell your story without saying a word.
Love boldness? Go for bright hues, daring cuts, or dramatic prints. More laid-back or romantic? Try soft fabrics, neutral tones, denim, or delicate florals.
Your choice of silhouette can also speak volumes—structured dresses give off a confident, polished vibe, while flowy, bohemian styles feel carefree and creative. Don’t forget the little things: accessories, textures, and patterns can all reflect who you are.
The key is to wear what makes you feel most like you . Confidence is the strongest style statement of all. At Honeysuckle Rose Boutique, you can shop through brands including Double D Ranch, Free People, Show Me Your Mumu, and Buddy Love, to name a few.
Shop in store at 242 E. Jefferson Street, Van Alstyne, or online at HoneysuckleRose.com

Five years ago, a sweet lab mix named Daisy found her fur- ever home with mom Jessica and changed more lives than she could have imagined. Now, at a graceful 9 or 10, she is not only a loyal companion but an Austin College campus legend.
Daisy isn’t just any dog—she’s a master of charm. With a repertoire of classic tricks like “sit,” “paw,” and the ever-impressive “other paw”, she’s always ready to show off… especially if treats are involved. Daisy is known to offer a paw preemptively, just in case it earns her a snack. Smart girl.
Her favorite things in life are simple but joyful: the clatter of pots and pans while waiting patiently for a scrap in the kitchen, the wind in her fur on car rides, and long walks filled with squirrel-watching. But more than anything, Daisy loves her role as the unofficial "official" Emotional Support Animal at Austin College.
Every morning, she hopes she is headed to campus, and if she’s not, she lets her disappointment be known. When she does go to work, she brings sunshine with her—wandering through classrooms, greeting every student and staff member like a beloved friend, and only sometimes pausing for a treat before offering a tail wag or hello. Professors barely blink when

“WHEN SHE DOES GO TO WORK, SHE BRINGS SUNSHINE WITH HER—WANDERING THROUGH CLASSROOMS, GREETING EVERY STUDENT AND STAFF MEMBER LIKE A BELOVED FRIEND.”
Daisy pops in mid-lecture; she’s as much a part of the learning environment as the syllabus.
Daisy’s charm has gone digital, too. With her own Instagram and Facebook pages, she keeps the campus community connected all year long—even alumni and summer-bound students. Her adventures are followed by many, not just because she’s adorable, but because she brings joy, laughter, and warmth to every post.
Daisy isn’t just a pet. She’s a furry piece of Austin College’s heart, and she makes sure no one forgets it.

SHERMAN RESIDENT DIRECTS
THE SHORT GAME
The Short Game is an inspiring sports drama that follows high school senior Jeremy Avery, a talented golfer chasing a college scholarship by winning the Texas State Championship. But life off the course threatens to derail his game—his mother is recovering from cancer, and he’s forced to care for his younger autistic brother, Ethan. What begins as a frustrating obligation becomes transformative when Jeremy discovers Ethan’s extraordinary gift for reading the golf course, revealing the potential for an unexpected and powerful partnership.
As Jeremy wrestles with pressure, self-doubt, and a ruthless rival, he must choose between chasing his own dreams or embracing the deeper value of family, faith, and connection. His decision will not only shape his future but redefine what success truly means.
The film is deeply personal for director and Sherman resident, Frank Sanza, a
former high school golfer and father to an autistic child. While the story is fictional, many of its emotional beats and family dynamics are inspired by his real-life experiences. Sanza uses the world of golf as both a literal and metaphorical backdrop to explore themes of resilience, neurodiversity, and the importance of recognizing the “short game”—in golf and in life—as the key to true fulfillment.
Creating The Short Game as an independent film allowed Sanza the creative freedom to tell a story rooted in authenticity, love, and hope. Backed by a passionate and experienced team, he delivers a heartfelt film that sheds light on the unique strengths of children on the autism spectrum, while celebrating the bonds that make us whole.
THE SHORT GAME opens in select theaters July 25th and across the country on August 1st
“Backed by a passionate and experienced team, he delivers a heartfelt film that sheds light on the unique strengths of children on the autism spectrum, while celebrating the bonds that make us whole.”

AN UNFORGETTABLE EVENING FEATURING TEXAS COUNTRY AND RED DIRT TALENT
ARTICLE BY MIKE ZAPATA
CHARLIE MUSIC WILLIE FESTIVAL
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The Charlie Willie Music Festival is a musical event sponsored by the Charlie Willie Foundation, which many Texoma residents look forward to each year. For many, it is a celebration of great music where locals can enjoy some great country artists. The festival showcases a local musical artist, an opening act, and a headliner, bringing talented Texas and Red Dirt country musicians to the Texoma area and allowing attendees to shop with great local vendors on site.
However, the organizers of the event hope that attendees will also recognize the purpose and reason behind the event and will celebrate the legacy of its namesake, Charles William Dishner, or Charlie Willie as his mother called him. Chuck, to his family and friends, realized the importance of family, faith, music, and service. Chuck’s life was filled with his love for his family, and he was a friend to many. An Air Force veteran with three tours in Vietnam, Chuck returned home to be there for his family as his children grew up. During his lifetime, his love for country music and a commitment to helping others continued to grow. He believed music was compelling and offered an opportunity to connect people and inspire change and joy. After Chuck’s passing, his family established the Charlie Willie Foundation to uphold these same values and serve and uplift our community.
Kay Dishner, wife of Chuck, shared some thoughts about her husband and the legacy he began, which lives on with his family as they carry out what he started. “We had eleven grandchildren, and they were the pride of Chuck’s life. He absolutely adored them. We both did.” According to Kay, the idea of helping the community started one Thanksgiving when the grandchildren were young. Each child was given some seed money and told that the money

was theirs, and they could do with it as they wished. He told them that by the next Thanksgiving, if any money was left, he would double it. Almost every child brought back more than what they started with, knowing that Chuck would double it. Chuck then asked them if they would like to help other kids who aren't as fortunate at Christmas. They all decided they wanted to help the children.
Chuck had agreed to assist the Child and Family Guidance Center because he believed in the organization's mission to support families. Kay states, “Papa was a huge

family man. He was a huge community man. He simply loved his family beyond all else, and he wanted his family to send love into the world, which they are all doing, and I am so proud of them. Now we all want to turn our hearts and heads to how to do it by making the Charlie Willie Music Festival a wonderful annual event that we can all take part in to keep Papa’s fantasy and memory going.” She added, “Chuck was a wonderful, steady, good man who never really talked much about himself. We all learned a great deal by living by faith. Now we, as Chuck’s family, his wife and his grandchildren, simply want to pass on what he gave us. A desire to help and to serve.”
According to their website, the Charlie Willie Festival benefits local charities, including the Child and Family Guidance Center of Texoma, which provides crucial support and mental health services to children and families in our community. "By partnering with organizations that uplift and strengthen families, we continue Chuck’s legacy of service and love, ensuring that his commitment to helping others lives on."
