An August Presence: Kids & Pets Issue

Whether raising little ones or restoring foundations, presence is everything.

This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they’re the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, curiosity, and energy shape the world around us in ways that matter deeply.

As parents, caregivers, neighbors, and friends, we do our best to nurture them, guiding their growth and pouring into their lives. But the truth is, children also shape us. They slow us down, crack us open, and fill our lives with meaning in the most unexpected ways.

The same is true for our pets. Loyal, loving, and always ready to play or comfort, they have a way of making our homes—and our hearts feel full. The bond between kids and their pets is something truly special. It teaches us about love, responsibility, and what it means to show up for someone else.

In this special Kids & Pets Issue, we celebrate those bonds with stories that reflect the heart of our local community:

• Convoy of Hope, feeding children, making a difference for community in need

• A behind-the-scenes look at Howliday Inn Pet Resort & Training Center

• High-energy fun from War Zone Nerf Arena

• And a lighthearted Texas Hill Country road trip that now carries deeper meaning

At the time of writing, our hearts are also tender. As many of you know, devastating floods recently impacted the Texas Hill Country. We had already planned to share a lighthearted road trip story from that very area—a story filled with sunshine and winding roads. In light of what’s happened, we’ve chosen to still include it, but with a spirit of gentleness and deep compassion. To our friends down south, we see you. We are holding you close in thought and prayer during this time of loss.

This issue is about joy, but also about presence. About noticing the good, holding space for the hard, and cherishing what and who we love most.

Here’s to the kids who brighten our lives, the pets who steady us and the stories that bring us all a little closer together.

With love,

August 2025

FROM HUNGER to hope

Convoy of Hope fulfills its mission of feeding children, empowering women and growing communities worldwide

| PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAYTON GILLIGAN, CONVOY OF HOPE

A woman’s social media post spoke volumes: “Please donate to Convoy of Hope, because cheese sandwiches and chainsaws saved my life.”

In 2017, when Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston area, Convoy of Hope jumped to action to help people—like the woman who later posted her message of gratitude-take care of their immediate needs during times of crisis.

After connecting with the post’s author, staff at Convoy of Hope learned she had been recently unemployed as a law enforcement professional when the hurricane knocked down several huge oak trees onto her residence and property. “She was at her wit’s end, sitting on her front porch when a Convoy of Hope vehicle pulled up and people gave her water and cheese sandwiches. They sent a chainsaw crew to cut down the oak trees on her residence and property,” says Ethan Forhetz, vice president of public engagement at Convoy of Hope. “She says this act saved her life.”

Since 1994, Convoy of Hope has been fulfilling its mission of serving people in times of need. Last year, they responded to 99 natural disasters, man-made disasters and humanitarian disasters. Beyond this, they provide basic, immediate assistance to help communities worldwide build a foundation to sustainability.

Last year Convoy of Hope helped communities in 65 countries. “These are places where many times the children haven’t eaten in a couple of days. They might not know where their next meal is going to come from. That’s when Convoy of Hope moves in with our children’s feeding program and provides nutritious meals with all the vitamins and minerals that the kids are going to need for the day, which allows them to concentrate on their schoolwork, stay in school and begin to work themselves out of generational poverty,” Forhetz says.

“We need water and food to live. When you don’t have one or both of those things, life gets very difficult very quickly,” he continues. “Our goal is to take away that uncertainty then get people to stand on their own and provide for themselves through education, business opportunities and farming.”

CONTINUED >

To accomplish this, Convoy of Hope connects people with community organizations, like churches and government and civic associations, which can help them long term. Its three pillars—feeding children, empowering women to start businesses and teaching agriculture so people can grow their own food and a surplus to sell to support their families that work together in a way that the results are not added but are multiplied, Forhetz says.

Their deep resources are due to their partners: corporations such as The Home Depot, Bass Pro Shops, SpartanNash, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Niagara Water, religious organizations and individual donors. “We are blessed that when a disaster happens, our partners are there to help us respond with the needed supplies. Sometimes, corporate donors will even contact us before we can even reach out to them,” he says.

Convoy of Hope’s reach is both global and local. “Within an hour of Springfield already this year, we have served 32 communities, partnering with 158 groups like food pantries, churches, food banks, homeless shelters, and similar places that help people,” he says. “We have partnered with 158 local organizations and given out more than $5.2 million worth of supplies that were able to serve more than 171,000 people just in the Springfield area this year.”

CONVOY OF HOPE FAST FACTS:

• Served more than 300 million people and given out more than $3.1 billion worth of supplies since its founding in 1994.

• Feeds 639,000-plus children every school day worldwide.

• Trained 39,000 people in agriculture in 2024.

• Empowered more than 61,000, women and girls in 2024.

• Served in 65 countries in 2024.

• Served more than 45 million people in 2024.

“Our goal is to take away that uncertainty then get people to stand on their own and provide for themselves through education, business, and farming.”
— Ethan Forhetz

At the Global Headquarters and Training Center, which opened in 2023, employees congregate from around the world to meet and train. In addition, Convoy of Hope relies on volunteers to perform duties ranging from packing groceries to driving trucks. “These volunteers allow us to maintain that 91 cents of every dollar goes where donors want it to go,” Forhetz says. For example, on most Tuesdays and Thursday nights from 6 to 8:30 pm locals can volunteer to bag groceries or create hygiene or baby supply kits.

The children’s feeding program currently feeds 639,000-plus kids globally every school day. “Our goal is to feed one million children daily by 2030,” Forhetz notes. To reach this goal, Convoy of Hope has broken ground on a 50,000-square-foot food manufacturing & packaging facility in Springfield, which will allow them to package their own meals of beans, rice and spices. Construction is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026.

“When it’s operational, we’ll have automated lines that will enable us to produce one billion meals a year,” he says. “It’s a monumental game changer not only to allow us to feed one million children every school day, but it will also allow us to be able to help supplement working families in this country and in the Springfield area.”

Second Chances Daily

One of the things that Brandon and Summer Gerhardt love most about owning Howliday Inn Pet Resort in Rogersville is watching the transformation in the dogs they train. “Sometimes, we are their last stop: If this training doesn’t work, the dogs may never find a home or their owners might have to give them away,” Summer says. “We watch them get their second chance, see it click in their brains that they don’t have to be so aggressive or that people are not so bad.”

The Gerhardts know first-hand the importance of second chances. “People in our past gave Brandon and I second chances,” she says. “That idea hits home.”

BUILD TRUST AND BETTER BEHAVIOR THROUGH EXPERT DOG TRAINING

NEAR SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.

“WE WATCH THEM GET THEIR SECOND CHANCE... SEE IT CLICK THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT SO BAD.”

As long-time employees of the business, which offers full-service dog training, dog boarding, dog grooming and doggie daycare, the couple felt a calling in this work to improve the quality of life for dogs and their owners. When the opportunity came to purchase the business in 2019, they jumped.

Although Summer says there was a bit of a learning curve in transitioning from coworkers to leaders, they were blessed with a solid team that was eager for more education and ready to help the couple take the business to the next level. “We’re like a small family,” she says.

Continuing education for the trainers is paramount, and Brandon leads by example: He is a gold graduate of the NePoPo training system, which trains dogs to be enterprising, innovative, and passionate partners; is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals and an American Kennel Club evaluator; and has worked under legendary trainer Cesar Millan.

Depending on the owners’ and dogs’ needs, Howliday Inn provides a variety of training options. Owners can drop their dogs off in the morning for trainers to work with them in the pack and one-on-one, tackling the basics and behavioral training to address jumping, chewing, barking or excitement. Trainers also offer individual private lessons. Another option is for owners to board their dogs for daily training in a setting that gives the trainers more time to reinforce the skills and build trust with the dog.

“The group class is more suited toward owners who want to do the work themselves. We teach owners how to help their dogs,” Summer says. “When our trainers work with the dogs, afterward, we have an appointment with the owners where we break down everything they need to know—dog psychology, how to have a balanced dog, how to live with their dog, how to correct the behaviors that they were brought to us for—and set up a follow up appointment. We are always available to help after training. Oftentimes, dogs will do great in training but when they get home will fall back into bad habits. In these cases, we help refresh their memory of the training in the home setting.”

Unleashing Transformation

At Howliday Inn Pet Resort in Rogersville, transformation goes deeper than obedience—it’s about giving dogs (and their owners) a better life. Owned by Brandon and Summer Gerhardt, the resort offers dog training, daycare, grooming, and overnight boarding—with a heart for second chances. Their tailored training programs meet dogs right where they are, from basic manners to reactivity and behavior issues.

Whether it’s group classes, private lessons, or board-and-train immersion, the Gerhardts focus on lasting results and confident ownership. “We believe a balanced dog equals a better life—for both the dog and their family,” Summer says.

They also give back: from fostering rescue dogs to offering free training to adoptables and partnering with local causes.

Catch their Howliday Tail Wagon at community events and treat your pup to a doggie pup-sicle or smoothie while supporting nonprofits.

Giving back to the community is important to the Gerhardt’s, who are both from Springfield. Howliday Inn donates to causes like Willard Parks programs and the Willard Police Athletic League’s youth boxing program. They also help dog rescue programs, offering free boarding and training for dogs that would otherwise be unadoptable and fostering rescues.

As you might suspect, the Gerhardt’s are business owners who bring their work home, where two “really chill” English Mastiffs named Mama Louise and Pops, a Belgian Malinois named Demo and an Australian Shepherd puppy named Ducky mix it up with the couple’s sons Brayden, 18, Brandon Jr., 14, Jaxon, 13, and Lane, 7.

“My favorite thing in life is being a boy mom, I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy, so we vibe,” Summer says, noting that Brandon is a wrestler, and Lane can’t wait to start wrestling and flag football. “I love watching them play sports.”

This past year, the Gerhardt’s have put their feel-good vibes on the road with their Howliday Tail Wagon, an ice cream truck for dogs, offering treats such as pup-sicles, smoothies and even dog mocktails. “Everything is dog-safe and dog-approved,” Summer says. “The pumpkin latte is super-popular in the fall.”

Launched last September, the Howliday Tail Wagon originated when Summer began making treats for the dogs at the pet resort. “I loved watching them eat, getting whipped cream on their faces, and thought ‘Man, I wish their owners could see this!’ We created the Tail Wagon so that this could be an owner and dog experience,” she says.

The Tail Wagon donates a portion of its proceeds to nonprofits that support animals in need. Dogs can sniff out their treats at community events like Dog Fest, Bark in the Park, 5k runs, adoption drives, grand openings and the farmers market on Republic Road. “People are now creating events just for us to come,” Summer says.

WHERE EVERY KID BELONGS — and Battles Hard

THE WAR ZONE IN BATTLEFIELD, MO BRINGS BIG PLAY ENERGY
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIFFANY ENOWSKI

When Lisa and Chris Clay were seeking a safe, fun way to occupy their two oldest sons during their summer break while they worked, they spoke to Vanessa Grimaldi, owner of the War Zone Nerf Arena, which is close to their home.

“I explained to Vanessa that the boys were our foster kids and we were adopting them. That immediate relationship we built with Vanessa made us feel comfortable trusting our kids to be there for eight hours a day,” Lisa Clay says. “They absolutely loved it. They looked forward to going. They begged constantly to go—when it was a school-off day, a snow day.”

Last year, when the couple heard that Grimaldi, who opened the War Zone in 2021, was selling it, they called a family meeting with their sons, Jacob, 15, John, 13, and Kevin, 5—all adopted foster children. “We wanted that to continue for our community. We need places where kids can be accepted and be physical and just play, a place where they would not be told to stop running or shooting their Nerf guns,” Clay says.

“We wanted to include our boys, even our littlest one, in the decision to see if opening a family business was something they wanted to do.”

Clay says their goal is to inspire their children, who play an active role in the business.

Thanks to the Clays, the War Zone remains the ultimate battleground for epic Nerf battles. Children age 4 and up learn strategy, teamwork and friendly competition while having fun. Kids can bring their own gear or use the top-quality Nerf blasters, ammo and protective eyewear provided free with admission. “We try to meet the needs of everyone who comes in. We want kids to experience a welcome, all-inclusive environment,” Clay says. “They come in for an hour and have unlimited ammo. They can switch their guns out as often as they want.”

The War Zone also hosts birthday parties and team-building events, because, well, adults enjoy epic Nerf battles, too!

are struggling right now, and we don’t want to be another burden,” she says.

The couple are staunch advocates for supporting and recruiting foster families. Recently, they ran a cereal drive for Sammy’s Window clothing closet and food pantry at FosterAdopt Connect, where Lisa works as program manager for behavioral intervention.

The couple love the Battlefield area where they live—Lisa moved to Springfield in 2009 to be closer to her family and Chris came out in 2016 before they got married—and run their business.

“We need places where kids can be accepted and be physical and just play, a place where…”

The Clays certainly know. Before they accepted foster children, the couple waged Nerf battles with their niece and nephew in the basement of Lisa’s sister’s home. “So, we already had our own arsenal,” Clay says with a laugh.

— Lisa Clay

The community-focused family uses their business as a way to give back and help others, with discounts for tax-exempt groups like churches and offering promotions like $5 Fridays and Pay Your Age (minimum $2, maximum $10). “Families

When not waging Nerf battles, their sons enjoy spending time with wildlife, whether it is  visiting the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium and Wild Animal Safari or hanging out at the park. Otherwise, the family is focused on supporting FosterAdopt Connect. “The boys like to help do the giveaways at Sammy’s Window,” Clay says.

“We try to make sure families are aware of the help that is out there and also to recruit foster parents, because there’s so many kids in need.”

The War Zone located in Battlefield, Missouri offers Nerf battles, parties, and events for ages 4 and up. Plan your next birthday or battle at thewarzonespringfield.com — Springfield’s local Nerf arena for epic, family-friendly fun .

WHISKING UP CONFIDENCE

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.

Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error,

Why Cooking with Kids is More Than Just Making Meals

they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.

Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.

The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.

It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.

Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

ANIMAL Crackers

Ingredients:

• 1 cup and 2 tablespoons white flour

• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/2 cup oatmeal

• 4 tablespoons honey

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

• 4 tablespoons buttermilk

• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon

Steps:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.

3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.

4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.

Enjoy!
