August - An Auspicious Time: The Kids & Pets Issue

Season of Vacations, Harvest, Back to School... August is the perfect time to reflect on the values that shape our lives, bringing peace and freedom to our everyday rhythms. These core values form the foundation of our actions and decisions. Our community values are ingrained in the people. We value people. August is a season of transition and growth. Starting new chapters is an opportunity to live the life we love, showing others that life is more than just being busy. With college-bound students and the back-to-school season upon us, we're reminded of life's brevity. It's a time to seize the day, make unforgettable memories, and create our fun. We value fun.

This month, we share stories from the Hendrick Family who value spaces, family, pets & community at Render Flooring, Mollie Estes who values fitness, safety, pets, family & community at F8 Training & Wellness Studio, and the Chuck Wiley Athletic Foundation, who values, athletics, youth, & community. Don't miss our feature on man's best friend. Socializing is important for human development—and for dogs too! We value connection

Our community and local businesses shape our lifestyles, offering planning, inspiration, and support. Kids and pets elevate our environment and values, bringing joy, responsibility, and a sense of purpose. They remind us to nurture and create a harmonious space for growth. We value purpose.

By meeting people where they are and offering encouragement, we contribute to a more positive and inclusive culture. Remember, if no one has told you today, you're doing great! Keep striving to elevate your life and the lives of those around you. We value experiences.

Last month we experienced the most beautiful celebration of life, and our dear friend published his first book. Here's an excerpt that speaks prophetic words over the next generations of leaders;

Empowering Through Mentorship

My interactions with Gen Z have underscored the importance of mentorship. This generation is eager to learn, grow, and make an impact, but they also seek guidance and support from those who have walked the path before them. In my mentoring relationships, I've focused on empowering them to harness their unique strengths and navigate the challenges they face. It's not about dictating what they should do but rather about helping them discover their own path to success. "The Wingman: Leaving Everlasting Love, Legacy & Lessons Learned" by Jon Anfinson.

A FAMILY'S PASSION FOR HOME AND LIFE

Creating Spaces and Memories

It’s a cold day, it is a Bass Pro Day.

As the sun set over the majestic Rocky Mountains, the Hendrick family found themselves pausing to absorb the breathtaking view. This moment of serenity led to a profound epiphany. “That moment was life-changing,” Nicole Hendrick recalls. “In search of whatever we were looking for, we had lost focus on our faith and family.”

With Nicole’s master’s degree in accounting and Taylor’s banking experience in New York, the couple had impressive credentials but lacked fulfillment. They sought peace of mind and a better fit for their family. Fast forward a year, with a newfound focus on what truly mattered, they opened Render Flooring.

Taylor and Nicole Hendrick, along with their three children—Cohen, 4; Callum, 2; and newborn Crew—embody family values. Their beloved dog Charlie, a sweet wedding present for Nicole, completes their family unit.

With Springfield located in the middle of the country, a road trip to the mountains or beach is not too far for the Hendrick family. Colorado, Florida and Hawaii are a few of the places this family has recently traveled. They also love a quick day drive. Nicole said, “We try to travel as much as we can. Normally we will make a cup of coffee and get in the car and just go.” The family embraces their passion for travel, even with small children and love giving them the experience.

The Hendrick family thrives on outdoor activities. Whether it’s splashing in a local creek, hiking a trail, or enjoying a park day, their children are at the heart of their adventures. “Our three boys are our world,” says Taylor. Nicole adds, “T-ball season is starting. I’m not missing that.” You might spot the family at Bass Pro Shops. In the winter, their oldest son says, “It’s a cold day, it is a Bass Pro Day.”

Both Nicole and Taylor come from entrepreneurial backgrounds and never felt truly fulfilled working for others. “It just felt like the right time. Can’t explain it,” Nicole shares. They remodeled homes together, blending their skills to create beautiful spaces. This experience inspired their new venture, Render Flooring. The couple values their creative freedom and the ability to provide unique, quality tile and flooring options for any budget, from small projects to large.

The Hendrick duo are making a generational move, prioritizing their family and enjoying the Rocky Mountains. “They grow up so fast,” reflects Nicole.

“We want to live a good life surrounded by good people,” Taylor explains. They appreciate Springfield’s evolving culture and entrepreneurial spirit. “It’s always changing. It has a small-town feel, driven by entrepreneurship,” Taylor notes.

Their business allows them to connect with clients on a personal level. For Nicole, it’s an

You have that creative thing back there that you need to fulfill. This does that. “ ”

“artistic release” to select tile options and guide clients through renovations. They cherish the relationships they build through their work.

Render Flooring’s name reflects their dual mission: to render service to their customers and create unique, homey spaces. They guide clients from initial inspiration to final result, offering a seamless and personal experience.

The Hendrick duo envision their store as a multiuse space, hosting events and training sessions for architects and designers. They want to be a hub where creativity flourishes and clients feel inspired. A boutique-style experience is something the owners strive for with a minimalist approach, translating to a breath of fresh air without the sense of overwhelm.

The business complements their lifestyle allowing them balance in their lives. Taylor mentions, “Work and life are just merged in a way for us. We find time to put into the kids, but we know the business also has to come in an equal front.”

As a Springfield native, Taylor describes the town as, “a melting pot within Missouri. The culture is right here, and I think the emphasis of young people being entrepreneurs really fits into our mindset. We want to build something for our kids. “

They cherish the local culture, enjoy kid-friendly activities and frequent local coffee shops like Dancing Mule Coffee Company and El Cafecito. Nicole says, “Springfield feels like home.”

Kids Safety Course-Foundations Jr. teaches children ages 7 to 11 safety and awareness in a non-threatening environment

Mollie Estes is on a mission to make life safer for Springfield families.

A mom of two—her daughter, Logan, is 8 and son, Raylan, is 6—Estes wanted her children to grow up to be independent, confident and aware, but not afraid of dangers that they might encounter.

For years, her boutique gym F8 Training & Wellness Studio has offered popular self-defense classes for women, but when moms started asking her for a kid-appropriate version of their signature Foundation Situational SelfDefense Course for women, she turned to her self-defense instructor Joey Johns to create a program that mixed in some fun to make it feel less intense. “With a background in elementary education and as a personal trainer & instructor, Joey was the perfect person to put together a curriculum for 7- to 11-year-olds — that perfect age for talking about stranger danger, red flags and tricky situations,” Estes says.

Last August, they launched Kids Safety Course as four 90-minute sessions that

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FATE

combine classroom lectures — which also address topics including cybersecurity, safety at home and while traveling — and practical self-defense skills, using a variety of styles including mixed martial arts and law enforcement evasive skills. “We train kids to get out and get away. There are some cool tactics we pull from the different martial arts,” she says. Both parents and children participate. “We play a lot of ‘What If’ and roleplaying games,” she says. Parents and participating police officers, play good and bad guys. For example, playing the bad guy, Instructor Joey might approach the children and try to entice them to come to her car to see puppies. In this scenario, children learn how to observe what the strange adult looked and dressed like so they can accurately report the occurrence to their parents. “It’s a game and we laugh about it, but we know that they will be a lot more aware and in a real-life situation that training will kick in,” she says.

For the fourth class, children don pads and enter a padded room where they encounter an equally padded “Red Man,” played by one of the police officers, who simulates an attack. “The Red Man grabs the child with full force and the child has to use full force against him,” Estes says. “Although the situations are safe, the child gets to feel what it is like to try to get away from somebody when they’re fully grabbing you and the strength that it takes to get away.”

Estes’ daughter participated in the first Kids Safety Course.  “Now, when I say, ‘Watch for red flags,’ she knows what I mean: Be alert. Look for things that are out of place,” Estes says.

Kids Safety Course is just one of the many reasons Estes enjoys owning F8. A former Cox Health

group exercise manager for 11 years, Cox Health instructors began working at F8 Training and Situational Self Defense while the Meyer Center (main hospital gym) was closed during the pandemic. In January 2022, with F8 at risk of closing, her instructor friends urged her to consider managing it. She fell in love with the intimacy of the small gym and helped to bring in group exercise classes and did personal training. Soon, she was managing the gym and when the opportunity to buy it arose, she jumped.

Although the name — F8 (fate) — was not hers, she embraced it. Along with her team of trainers they developed a mission statement: “It’s never too late to control your fate.” “We were not like other gyms that were just about getting fit, hard bodies. We were more like ‘Hey, let’s be healthy and move,” she says.

In addition to personal training and situational self-defense, throughout the month the gym offers holistic and wellness sessions such as yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and sound baths. “If you work hard and play hard, you also need to recover. We always say self-care isn’t selfish. If you can’t take care of yourself, then how are you going to take care of those around you?” she says.

F8 also has a wellness room that offers services including Botox and fillers, an infrared sauna and foot detox bath. “It’s a nice boutique

studio space where women and men both can feel like they’re working toward health, not punishing themselves at the gym,” she says.

It is important to Estes to give back to the community that supports her. She helped found the organization, Wellness for Warriors in 2016 and serves on the board and sponsors the Joggin’ for Noggins 5k. F8 Training actively engages with the community, partnering with the Springfield Dream Center and participating in the CASA gala. They offer free Parkinson’s Therapy Exercise classes in collaboration with Parkinson’s Group of the Ozarks. Additionally, they conduct safety events at local universities and provide self-defense training to organizations.

Estes, After Hours

“We have a zoo at my house,” Estes says. There’s Rosie, the three-year-old mini Australian Shepherd and Willow the cat. “I’ve never really been a cat person, but we have mice from the big field next to us. Someone was moving and giving her away—and she was a mouser! I have fallen in love with Willow.” Rounding out the menagerie is Peter Rabbit, a big, brown domestic rabbit her neighbors found in their garden — “He thinks he’s a dog. He’s litter box trained,” she notes — chickens and Frank Sinatra the rooster.

The Estes family enjoys taking Rosie to Sequiota Park and the Greenways Trails as well as to one of the many dog-friendly restaurants in the area, especially Big Whiskey’s. “She loves to just lay out there and watch everybody on the patio on a Sunday afternoon,” she says.

Estes has lived here since 2000, after moving from Golden, Colorado, to attend Missouri State University (when it was Southwest Missouri State University), enticed by the beauty of the area from visits to her older sister who lived in Branson. She started doing personal training during her freshman year and continued at local gyms before landing the job at Cox Health.

“The rich, vibrant community is what has kept me here,” she says. “I love Springfield because it is so small-business minded and there’s just these little hidden gems everywhere. The people are kind, there’s always a great restaurant and something going on.”

The next Kids Safety Camp is August 6, 8, 13 and 15. Learn more at F8Training.com

SUPPORTING youth ATHLETES

Founded in memory of Springfield resident and former professional baseball player Chuck Wiley, the Chuck Wiley Athletic Foundation has been dedicated to assisting youth athletes since 2020. This nonprofit organization supports young athletes and their families with physical and financial needs, aiming to engage athletes free from financial burdens and support them through life’s curveballs.

The foundation provides scholarships for equipment, entry fees, and travel expenses, keeping over 125 athletes in the game and distributing more than $65,000 in scholarships. The support has been invaluable for families, who have expressed immense gratitude for the assistance in keeping their children involved in sports. The foundation’s impact spans various sports, including boxing, basketball, baseball, softball, dance, figure skating, swimming, soccer, football, gymnastics, wrestling, Color Guard, and karate.

Collaborating with organizations like Foster Adopt Connect, Dream Center, Urban K-Life, Drew Lewis Foundation, and Springfield Parks and Rec, the foundation ensures that athletes in need receive the support they deserve. Their annual Wiley Baseball Tournament, the primary fundraiser, has grown from 12 teams in 2020 to 96 teams in 2023, netting $30,000 last year.

As the foundation’s reach expands, so does the need for sponsorship. They plan to introduce additional fundraisers to sustain their mission. Run entirely by volunteers, the foundation operates under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, ensuring that all scholarships and approvals are managed efficiently.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn says that boundaries can be learned by dogs of any age.

“There’s a nasty perception along the ‘can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ line of thinking,” she says. “While you can’t take a dog with serious behavioral issues and completely turn them around 180 degrees, you can make improvements in how you understand your dog and how they understand you. Dog training isn’t just for struggling pups either. Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

“Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

CONTINUED >

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”

Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.

“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

DOG SOCIALIZING TIPS:

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH

FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS:

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and petfriendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.

Adventure Awaits

Chance Adventure Co gives families the freedom to hit the open road in classic style.

Kelley and Sam Chance have it figured out when it comes to spending quality family time together with their two young sons, Sully, 9, and Grady, 7. They literally took a chance in 2013 and bought Stella, a 1984 Airstream Excella, as a renovation project. One family camping trip and they were hooked. Now they are true vintage Airstream enthusiasts.

They sold Stella, but the “silver bullet” calling never left and Chance Adventure Co was born. Sam had talked for years about renovating and renting Airstreams.

“There’s something magical about those silver trailers, especially the old ones. They have such character, and many stories within their aluminum walls.”

“Once the pandemic hit, it was now or never,” Kelley says. “We welcomed Carolina into our family, a 1983 31’ Excella, and she’s been rocking out camping trips with us and our clients since early last year. In 2020, she traveled to Yellowstone, Glacier, the Badlands, Upper Peninsula in Michigan, Indiana Dunes, Kannapolis, Kansas and more. Georgia, a 1978 31’ Sovereign Land Yacht, is currently being renovated from the frame up.”

They will be adding to their fleet soon and are adding an Airstream Renovation Workshop on their Tonganoxie property. They also have the Chance Adventure Co shop, loaded with outdoorsy inspired items.

Adventure is a part of life for this active couple, who live on 10 acres. They have horses, garden, hike, bike and explore.

“By far, our favorite thing to do as a family is travel and spend time outdoors. We hiked the three miles roundtrip, 480-foot climb to Delicate Arch when the boys were 8 and 5, biked through the Badlands, kayaking Lake Michigan. We’ve had so many incredible experiences connecting the four of us, and connecting us to nature via camping,” she says. “The boys have learned a deep appreciation and love for Mother Earth, to navigate the terrain using a compass or their own wits, to identify and care for the flora and fauna around us, and they’ve gained so much confidence and courage through it all.”

Each trailer is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized after each rental. Airstreams are available for rental for road trips, or they can deliver and set up at local locations.

“There’s something magical about those silver trailers, especially the old ones. They have such character, and many stories within their aluminum walls,” she says. “Making them a part of our family story just made sense.”

EMBRACING A PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUR BODY

Wellness isn’t about restricting — it’s really about giving. Giving to yourself and to your body in a way that allows them both to thrive. The cool part? The things that give to your body naturally give to your mind, your hormones, your earth, your relationships, and so on — it’s all beautifully interconnected in that way.

Work in partnership with your body. Listen to it, support it, give to it, forgive it — and I promise it’ll give back. Repeat after me: I love myself as the most important and committed partner I will ever have

Eat your greens, cook at home, choose local produce and quality meats, don’t be scared of healthy fats — but also support local farmers, move in a way that makes your body and mind feel good, prioritize times of mindfulness and stillness, fuel your body in a way that is sustainable for both you and the planet, practice gratitude and empathy, give yourself grace when you lose routine, don’t try to make changes overnight, ditch the guilt, and always always be kind to yourself.
