While we just began publishing our magazine in Somerset Hills in January, this August actually marks the three-year anniversary of the first issue of our initial publication, Bridgewater City Lifestyle. Where has the time gone? In fact, I completely forgot it was our anniversary until I sat down to write this letter. A lot has changed in three years. What you may not realize is that we are actually franchise owners. When we first began publishing, there was only one other magazine in New Jersey. Now, there are seven of us! If you’re interested in learning more about the opportunity, shoot me a line. We’ve also had changes on the homefront, as we welcomed a fourth child into our home, but not in the traditional way. Our oldest daughter, who is 13, joined our family two years ago. We like to jokingly say that we adopted a babysitter. In addition to another child, we also added a pet to our family. Polly, the most well-behaved guinea pig on earth—hopefully I’m not jinxing myself here—has become a constant companion to our 11-year-old daughter. This issue is dedicated to all of your furry friends in Somerset Hills. Our doggie cover model contest on social media was a huge hit, and Sunny stole the show with the most votes. Lack of inventory has kept our market area brisk. In the chart below, note that available homes for sale are down by 25% over last year, already lower than the year prior. Also note that sold listings are down just over 14% compared to last year. That is because there were 25% less homes on market, rather than a sales slump. Pricing a home correctly continues to attract multiple offers. Having your home turnkey, or at least well maintained, with neutral colors, gives it a competitive edge. Location as a criteria is once again an integral part of the selection process. Tranquil and park-like outdoor spaces remain a strong selling point. The bottom line: as more homes become available, and rates rise, buyers are becoming more discerning, yet demand as of today is still strong. I'm here to help you every step of the way!

Owner Taylor Fischer and Sunny

Sunny is an 8-year-old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd who lives in Basking Ridge with her family: Dana and Tom Fischer and their adult children, Taylor and Luke. When the family saw her puppy pictures online, it was love at first sight. “We reached out and learned that she had already gone to a home with two small children. We were disappointed but continued our search,” says Taylor. “We got a call a few days later and learned that she had been returned—and that she was ours if we wanted her. We knew it was a sign because our Grandad’s nickname was Sunny.” The Fischer family describes Sunny as sweet and full of energy. She loves to take car rides, play frisbee with her family and go on walks. The family’s favorite memory with Sunny—or “Sun” as they call her—was when they all went swimming for the first time. Sunny was having so much fun swimming that she wouldn’t get out of the pool.

Sunny is also very smart. She has learned how to unlatch gates and sneak out of her room at night! As a purebred Australian Shepherd, Sunny needs to go on long walks and have a lot of space to run around to expend her energy. Sunny’s family considers themselves lucky to have her, and they are so happy that she came to live with them as her forever home.

Nothing says “lazy days of summer” like ice cream. Taking that first lick of ice cream can instantly transport us back to our childhood, whether it be an early memory of rescuing a dripping scoop from landing onto a hot pool deck or the sweet sensation felt when sharing a cone with a teenage love. We ate it after winning awards, dove into it after failing a test and savored it before bed on balmy summer nights on the front porch, watching the fireflies twinkle. Although the flavors presented today can seem novel, there’s truly nothing new. “When you look at recipes of early chefs who worked for the nobility, you’ll see avocado, lavender, chocolate— which was exotic then—and pinecone. Fast-forward to 21stcentury artisanal ice cream shops, and they are making the same things,” says Laura Weiss, author of Ice Cream: A Global History. “Ice cream is a blank culinary palate: It’s cream, sugar and maybe eggs. You can apply to that pretty much any flavoring you want— savory, sweet it doesn’t matter.” But the main ingredient is love.

When Chuck and Amy Hendershot heard that Penguin Ice Cream in Bernardsville was up for sale two years ago, they acted fast. The Bernardsville natives—they met in kindergarten at Bedwell Elementary—and parents to eight children knew that the shop was a place where memories were born. “It’s a cornerstone. Outside the shop, customers will find bench seats, sidewalk chalk for artists old and young, a water bowl for the pups, fresh flowers for the view and sometimes a surprise visit from Scoop, the Penguin mascot. Kids are welcome and encouraged to hang their drawings and poems or writings in the windows to show off their proud work. The Hendershots welcome noise, laughter and a fun vibe in their store. The couple sources cream from local farms and makes the ice cream and Italian ice fresh daily, adding fruits and candies while maintaining freshness without preservatives. They serve up 45 rotating flavors—with new ones all the time—and are game to take customers’ suggestions. They use the freshest soft serve products and richest cream fats to improve flavors from the base. “We make everything fresh and natural so that it is as clean as possible,” she says. “For example, the blueberry ice cream is cream-based with blueberries without preservatives.” Expect everything from ice cream sandwiches to flying saucers, Flurris (ice cream with toppings mixed in), edible cookie dough and even dog bones for the pups. A new arrival is their “Six Pack”: six packs of ice cream in cupcake container cups. One of their biggest-sellers is Brookie Dough (cookie dough and brownie bites with chocolate ribbon in a sweet cream base), which was named after their daughter, Brooke, by her sister, Molly.

Desiree Mazzarese grew up in a house full of creativity. “My mom is very artistic. She gave us little projects, and we would often move furniture and decorative objects around the house to give it a fresh look. So, I always loved interior decorating,” she says. In 2021, she channeled that passion by opening Guest House, a home and gift boutique in Basking Ridge. “I wanted to own a place where people could shop a curated collection and find items with an eclectic flair,” she says.

Soon, as she did with her mom growing up, Mazzarese and her sister, Stephanie Ossorio, started tinkering with a concept, adding unique children’s clothing and accessories as a pop-up store in the back of Guest House. The idea caught on, and they launched LULU Kids Style. “Stephanie and I both have four-yearold daughters. Her son is nine and mine is two. We had been toying around with the idea of opening a store since we saw a need for one in the area. Whether we’re looking for clothes for our kids or for fun, thoughtful CONTINUED >

gifts for a classmate’s birthday, we struggled to find options,” she says. LULU Kids Style—an online boutique, with a pop-up shop at Guest House—offers fashion-forward looks for toddlers to tweens. The name is a homage to their mom, who would sing “Skip to My Lou” to her children. “She still addresses my brother, sister and I as ‘Lu’ or ‘Lulu’ and it has extended to our kids. We wanted to include our mom somehow with the store and what better way than with something that brings us warm memories of our childhood,” Ossorio says. To keep their pulse on what kids want, the sisters poll family, friends and visitors to the store. “We have a large family and will send them pictures and ask their kids, ‘Would you wear this? Are your friends wearing this?’” The looks for the start of the school season are vibrant and uplifting. “My sister and I always dressed our kids in fun styles with bright colors and sequins and paired them with sneakers. Comfort is important when dressing kids, so why not make it fun and stylish?” Ossorio says. “That's what we’re seeing now: bright, rainbow colors and smiley faces like we saw growing up.” Comfort is key. “They like to wear what we adults wear—sweatshirts and jogger pants— but we tailor it to them,” Mazzarese says. For girls, the hot look is tank tops and shorts sets as well as denim jackets with sequins or patches—lots of patches. “But there is also a girly-girl trend with dresses that look like a tutu,” she notes. For boys, all things casual-comfortable are flying off the site, along with fun button-down shirts with nautical or skull themes. Tweens love sweatshirts with inspirational and environmental sayings or images from ’70s and ’80s musicians like The Beatles and David Bowie. “A light lilac sweatshirt that says Be Kind in small print on the upper-left shoulder sold out within days of it being posted on the site,”

Mazzarese says. “Tweens like crop tops, but parents do not want them to show too much of their middle, so we advise them to order one size larger—and everyone wins!” LULU Kids Style’s “Confetti Collection” is one that adults and kids alike can get into, with key chains, notebooks and business card holders—perfect for adding a little whimsey into a more serious work routine. Take jumping on a trampoline with your kids. “It’s an exciting way to adults and kids to burn calories and get their blood circulating,” says Anthony Mina, owner of ClubAir in Warren. “Plus, socializing with your friends and family in an active way strengthens not only your body but your relationships as well.” Since ClubAir opened in 2021, the indoor trampoline park has become a social hub for the area. Mina’s vision was to bring activities to New Jersey that focused on technology, interaction, heightened user experience and safety. He also emphasized being an active part of the community: Through the last year-and-a-half, ClubAir has supported organizations. “The area really needed a state-of-the-art indoor facility where people could spend quality time with their families, socialize with other parents or have a safe place to drop off their kids to play,” says Mina, who conceptualized this new, interactive twist on traditional trampoline parks along with his sons Matthew (17) and Max (12). Seeking to discover attractions that are not seen in the United States, he traveled to trampoline parks as far as Canada and Egypt and interviewed companies across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. ClubAir is proud that the trampoline equipment is U.S. made. With a diverse background in sports, recreation and child-related ventures, Mina understands how to keep kids engaged and having fun. The Minas designed the park to provide an interactive experience that captivated children’s minds, raised their adrenaline and kept them safe. ClubAir pits feature airbags covered with a top sheet that is treated with a patented antiviral and

High School Distinctions: Irwin was heavily involved in her high school’s choir and musical theatre, including serving as president of the Choir Council and performing as a soprano in the auditioned-based Mixed Chorale. She is a founding member of Cardinal Voices and The Chamber Ensemble. She has performed in all the school musical theatre productions and served as the Student Music Director for “SpongeBob SquarePants,” in spring 2022. Honors: Irwin is vice president of Hillsborough’s chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. She also has performed as a part of the New Jersey Music Educators Association All-State Chorus, Central Jersey Music Educators Association Region II Chorus, The College of New Jersey Honors Festival and the 2021 Peabody Conservatory Summer Vocal Academy. Giving Back: Irwin founded the mentoring program Boro Buddies Online, which has provided over 3,000 hours of mentoring to over 140 Hillsborough elementary students. She was awarded her Girl Scout Gold Award in 2021 for leading the virtual Music Together Camp. She also co-founded Lend-A-Voice, a volunteer singing group dedicated to performing for the community, which also was expanded to include a Memorial Day tribute shared to United States Army bases across the world. What’s Next: Irwin, who participated in the TCNJ Future Music Educators Institute, will study music education. “I want to share my passion for music with students as my directors, particularly Mrs. Ashley Mathews, has done for me,” she says. What Music Means to Me: “Music is something I can always use to connect with others and give back to my community,” she says. “I loved working with the elementary school students, seeing their excitement when they learned something new. In high school, I enjoyed running the rehearsals for the choirs and directing the musical. These experiences have expanded my love for teaching through sharing my passion with others.”

He has participated in honors ensembles, including the National Association for Music Education All-National Mixed Chorus and All-Eastern Mixed Chorus, American Choral Directors Association Eastern Region Honor Choir and New Jersey Music Educators Association All-State Mixed Chorus. incorporates the voice in some way since I’m also a singer,” he says. “An important part of my process is working with poetry, so I read a lot of poetry to inspire me.” Giving Back: During the pandemic, Tomasco spent hundreds of hours organizing seven virtual performances as a contribution to his musical community. What’s Next: Tomasco will study music composition with a concentration in voice performance at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater & Dance. “My plan is to become a professor in music composition,” he says. “This ties into my idea of the importance of musicians being able to inspire other people and create something that’s going to evoke some sort of emotional response.
