Art & Soul

Natalya Belenkaya’s Passion Seeks to Connect Others to Themselves

Richmond -based artist Natalya Belenkaya explores the complexity of emotions and positive mindset through her art. Whether it’s acrylic bright colors and abstract forms, or her surrealistic charcoal drawings, Natalya invites viewers to look into their subconscious mind and connect with her vision.

Born in Belarus, Natalya grew up in Northern Caucuses. Natalya came to the USA as a refugee in 1993, and she settled in Richmond, Virginia with her family. Now, she shares her heart with us through her artwork here in RVA.

“Since I was a child, I felt a deep pull toward creativity—I just didn’t know what that path would look like in the future,” says Natalya.

Natalya earned her BFA in Communication Arts and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University and began her career as a graphic designer. That experience became an important part of her creative foundation.

Over the past few years, Natalya’s artwork has been exhibited at Art Works, the Sara D. November Gallery, and Crossroads Art Center. Most recently, her painting “Courage to Evolve” received First Place in the All Media Show at Art Works RVA. She has also held two solo exhibitions in Richmond.

ARTISTIC VISION

“I use two very different media… charcoal and acrylic… but, There is one common denominator - each of my artworks regardless of the media I use, is a window into emotion. An emotion that is directly or indirectly provoked by my personal life events or by life events of people I know. My art explores the power of a positive mindset.”

PASSION FOR ART

What drives Natalya is the simple magic of creating something that didn’t exist before. That’s her superpower. And when she sees that her art brings joy or sparks emotion in someone else—that’s what keeps her coming back to the canvas.

MEDIUMS & TECHNIQUES

Natalya works with multiple mediums to push her creative boundaries. She loves charcoal for its organic quality and the dramatic contrast it creates between light and dark. “It’s messy, but forgiving”, she says. Acrylic and mixed media offer a different kind of creative freedom for her—she often use symbols like butterflies to communicate her ideas, letting intuition guide the shapes and colors as they emerge.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Natalya rarely starts with a set plan—she trusts the process to guide her. She usually works on two to three pieces at once, trying to keep up with the flow of ideas constantly running through her mind.

INSPIRATION SOURCES

Natalya draws inspiration from moments of personal growth, emotional resilience, and self-discovery.

ART & COMMUNITY

Natayla has been especially focused on bringing her art into the Short Pump area because she’s always felt there aren’t enough cultural events in Short Pump for the community to come together. That’s why she chose to hold both of her solo exhibitions in this area. “I want art to feel accessible—something people can experience right in their own neighborhood, not just downtown. I’m currently exploring venues for future pop-up shows to continue sharing my work with the community in which I live.”

GIVING BACK

A portion of the proceeds from Natalya’s art shows go to CURE Epilepsy, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to epilepsy research. It’s important to her that her art not only inspires, but also supports meaningful causes.

AUDIENCE CONNECTION

Natalya’s goal is simple: she wants her art to spark thoughts and emotions. She truly hopes people see a reflection of themselves in her work—and that it brings a sense of positivity and peace.

FUTURE PROJECTS

“I’m currently looking for a venue in the Short Pump area for a solo pop-up art exhibition in November 2025. I’m also exploring opportunities to collaborate with other creatives—artists, designers, or local businesses—to bring fresh, meaningful projects to life.”, Natalya expressed.

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS

“Don’t wait for the perfect moment—it may never come. Start creating and share your art with the world now.”

ARTISTIC COLLABORATION

Natalya welcomes art commissions, and collaborative opportunities and partnerships.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Natalya loves spending her free time with family— exploring cultural events around town and trying new restaurants together.

JAKE THE BEAGLE WINS HEARTS

Wherever He Goes

LOYAL COMPANION WHO LOVES WALKS, SNUGGLES, AND MAKING FRIENDS
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA RAE LINAS

At about 12 years old, Jake the beagle has mastered the art of winning hearts; whether you’re a lifelong dog lover, or someone who swore you weren’t a “dog person.” Jake has the personality to win anyone over (just ask his mom, who’s now fully converted into a Jake person).

Jake’s a familiar face around the neighborhood, stopping on every walk to greet passersby with his signature sweetness. Though he has a few canine pals, his true passion is people; especially if they happen to offer a belly rub or a treat. Don’t let his age fool you. Jake still enjoys a good sniff around the yard, where he loves wandering around. Inside, he could be part beagle, part cat: independent yet incredibly affectionate. He shadows his mom from room to room and has a bed in nearly all of them. Evenings are for couch snuggles, where he curls up beside his humans like a warm, furry blanket. His quirkiest move? What his family lovingly calls “prairie dogging.” This is when Jake stands on his hind legs to ask (politely of course) for something he wants. And, let’s be honest, he usually gets it.

Despite his gentle spirit, Jake holds firm opinions; namely, he does not like the UPS truck. But otherwise, he’s a mellow, loving soul who’s happiest around his people. Jake may be a little older, but with his kind eyes, quiet devotion, and special charm, he’s a legend to those who know him.

Investing in Your Wardrobe Without Compromising Your Style

DOLLAR

1.

IT’S POSSIBLE TO SHOW YOUR UNIQUE STYLE WITH NICE CLOTHES WHILE ALSO STRETCHING YOUR DOLLAR

One’s wardrobe says a lot about a person and it is important to dress to the occasion whether it be work or play while still expressing yourself. Building a wardrobe can be a costly expense but it’s possible to show your unique style with nice clothes while also stretching your dollar.

A FUN, SUSTAINABLE WAY TO BUILD A HIGH-QUALITY AND STYLISH WARDROBE

Second-hand and vintage-style clothes are a fun, sustainable way to build a high-quality and stylish wardrobe without breaking the bank. Buying hand-made and second-hand also reduces the demand for new clothing production, which helps reduce waste and the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

3.

SOME PIECES ARE SIMPLY BETTER WHEN THEY ARE SECOND-HAND

Some pieces are simply better when they are second-hand like worn denim and lived-in boots or leather that’s softened over time. Get creative and add touches to your old favorites with patches, embroidery, and even natural flower colors transferred to fabric. Grab your old t-shirts, family vintage fabrics, or lace, and pull it all together into something new and memorable.

My sister, Haley, used an 1800s petticoat and blouse, salvaged Edwardian style Christening gowns and a tablecloth, and other fabrics to create the most amazing vintage-style wedding dress. It was so perfectly her and absolutely gorgeous.   IT WAS SO PERFECTLY HER AND ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS

5.

SIMPLE, WILD, CLASSIC, COLORFUL;  DON’T BE AFRAID TO SHOW YOUR STYLE

The best way to keep your wardrobe fresh is to look for either trendy or classic new pieces and match them with your favorite vintage or second-hand pieces, like a new dress with your grandma’s old leather jacket or a recently purchased foundation piece with a skirt made from vintage fabrics. Simple, wild, classic, colorful; don’t be afraid to show your style and your financial fashion savvy at the same time.

“Grab your old t-shirts, family vintage fabrics, or lace, and pull it all together into something new and memorable.”

OLD WALL,

NEW TRICKS

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.

WHY CHOOSE A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM?

The beauty of a gallery wall hanging system lies in its flexibility and ease of use. Traditional picture hanging methods can leave walls full of holes, making it cumbersome to adjust placements or update the display. A hanging system, however, allows for easy adjustments without additional damage to your walls. This feature is particularly advantageous for renters or anyone who likes to refresh their decor frequently.

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL

The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:

• A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store.

• A collection of frames and artwork.

• A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

• The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste:

• Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance.

• Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity.

• Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look.

Enjoy curating a space that is uniquely yours, evolving with your tastes and lifestyle.

INSTALLATION TIPS:

01 MEASURE YOUR SPACE:

Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

02 LAY IT OUT:

Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03 INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART:

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position of each piece easily.

04 BALANCE AND SYMMETRY:

Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.
