Ok, so I’ve started this letter four times now. Do I talk about my amazing mom, Ann? My wonderful sister, Deborah? My partner-in-crime daughter, Hailey? My best friend, Cally? (Hi, everyone!) Do I talk about the women in this issue?
The problem is, it’s our Women’s Issue. And as I think about all the amazing women in my life—both family and friends, as well as women I was lucky enough to get to know as I interviewed them for this issue—there are just so many that I’m grateful for that I don’t know where to begin. Literally. (Hello, take five!)
And that actually sums up this entire issue.
Our annual Women’s Issue is, in my eyes, one of the most difficult issues to plan. There are just so many amazing women in our community, and we’d love to profile them all. Honestly, we could dedicate hundreds of pages to all of you if we had the space! And of course, there are so many interesting stories that relate to women, as well.
But each year we have a limited number of pages, so we try to pick stories that will speak to you.
From women making a difference to a girlfriend getaway, we hope you are inspired.
Let’s help each other succeed, let’s be there for each other through life’s ups and downs, and yes, let’s meet up for a happy hour, because spending time with friends is good for the soul.
Here’s to celebrating women—who you are, who you are helping, and who is helping you. You’re amazing.
Yours,

I dedicate this letter to all the ladies out there. This one’s for you!
Let’s face it, women are nothing short of amazing.
As I sat down to write this, I began to reflect on just how grateful I am for all the women in my life. They are all such a gift to me! I am all about women’s empowerment and feel strongly that women need support from women more than anything else. Inclusion, acceptance, love, and encouragement is such an important piece to all that women contribute to this world.
As a little girl, I was fortunate enough to have a loving, supportive, and encouraging mom. She always made me feel like I could achieve anything I could dream up. I have two older sisters who have both served as role models and examples for me, which has most certainly helped me on my path, as well!
Women play many roles in life. I am … a daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, friend, colleague, business owner, and entrepreneur. In each of these roles, I feel tremendous gratitude toward the women in my life who have helped shape and influence my choices to be happy, loving, gracious, intentional, confident, fun, silly, compassionate, honest, open, humble, and kind.
I owe so much of my approach to life to the women I surround myself with. There is nothing better than a solid foundation of friends and family who are your consistent cheerleaders!
For that, I am humbled and grateful. Thank you, ladies, for loving each other so much!
Be grateful, be kind, and live well,
Tammy Fellows Owner/PublisherAlison Sweeney has had a busy life. The award-winning actress, former reality show host, director, and author (she’s written four books!) has played the character of Sami Brady on Days of Our Lives from 1993-2015, and then on and off ever since. In 2007, she also took over as host of The Biggest Loser, which she continued with until 2015. She also began working with the Hallmark Channel in 2013, starring in such film series as Murder She Baked and Chronicle Mysteries for them. Her latest Hallmark movie debuts this month.
We caught up with the actress, who recently moved to Scottsdale, to chat about her career, her new movie, and what she loves about living here.

THE ACTRESS TALKS ABOUT HER CAREER, MOVE TO SCOTTSDALE, AND ONE THING YOU’D BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT HER
YOU’VE BEEN ACTING AND ON TELEVISION SINCE YOU WERE VERY YOUNG. SINCE THAT FIRST APPEARANCE AT AGE 5, DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE THE DRIVE TO DO THIS LONG TERM?
Yes, 100%. I’ve always loved acting and thankfully had parents who were not pushing me to do it but supported my passion for it.
YOU HAVE A NEW MOVIE COMING OUT THIS MONTH. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?
I’m really excited for fans of Hannah Swensen to see the next installment. It was so fun to shoot again with Barbara (Nivens), Cameron (Mathison), and Gabe (Hogan). We always have the best time when we’re together, and this is a really fun story that celebrates what fans love about Hannah and all her mischief. Plus, we make sure there’s plenty of romance!
YOU’VE DONE A NUMBER OF HALLMARK MOVIES NOW … DO YOU SEE YOURSELF MAKING MORE OF THESE MOVIES?
Absolutely! I love finding great content from books or original ideas and adapting them for television. We have a few projects in development that hopefully will be announced soon.
YOU’VE ALSO PLAYED SAMI BRADY ON DAYS OF OUR LIVES SINCE 1993 (BOTH FULL-TIME AND SPORADICALLY). WHAT IS IT LIKE TO PLAY THE SAME CHARACTER FOR SO LONG?
It’s really fun when I step back into Sami’s shoes and to laugh about her latest scheming. She’s been such an outrageous, exciting, and complicated character to play over the years. It’s always a new challenge for me as an actor.
IN WHAT WAYS ARE YOU MOST SIMILAR—OR DISSIMILAR!—TO SAMI?
I would like to think I have Sami’s thoughts, but I know better than to act on them. Her heart is always (usually) in the right place … she just might not go about dealing with it in the right way.
ANY FAVORITE ON-SET MEMORIES?
There are way too many! One time I had a crazy story where Sami gets into a physical struggle with another character, and they end up in a river. They actually brought in a water tank and built a “river” set for us to film with underwater cameras and everything. It was a pretty cool day of filming. But of course, the many memories with Francis Reid, John Aniston, and so many daytime legends; the fun times in the makeup room with Deidre, Kristian, Lauren, and so many other leading ladies; the decades of fun with Bryan; and so many great friendships with past and present co-stars that continue beyond Salem.
IN 2007—WHILE ALSO STILL ON DAYS OF OUR LIVES!—YOU TOOK OVER HOSTING THE BIGGEST LOSER. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE SHOW?
Because I was part of the NBC family, and after I was so competitive that I was willing to eat worms on Fear Factor, I think I got the attention of network executives and producers. Plus, I’d hosted the MDA Telethon, so I had some experience, and I was public about my journey to better health and wellness growing up in the entertainment industry. It was such a tentpole for the network and I was honored they entrusted me with hosting, having never previously hosted a reality show.
At the time, it seemed perfectly normal to do both, but looking back, especially going straight to the hospital to deliver my daughter after being on set, I realize what an ambitious schedule it was. I don’t know how I did it, but I’m glad I’m not trying to keep it up today.
I loved meeting the incredible contestants and learning about their journeys, as well as celebrating their milestone achievements while on campus and once they went home. They inspired me, as well as the millions who watched them on TV.
“They inspired me, as well as the millions who watch them on TV.”
YOU RECENTLY MOVED TO SCOTTSDALE. WHAT PROMPTED THE MOVE?
My husband recently retired from the California Highway Patrol, and we wanted to take the opportunity to live somewhere else. Because most of my movies are filmed outside of California, it was the perfect opportunity to move.
HOW ARE YOU LIKING IT HERE?
We love it, and so do our kids! We have found great new friends and are loving the adventure of living in a new state for the first time in any of our lives. [There are] so many great hikes for me to try— Dave and Ben are into mountain biking and dune buggies. There are so many restaurants and they’re all incredible. My son is in high school and driving, so it’s fun for him to explore with his girlfriend, and he’s playing tennis and has a great part-time job. My daughter rides horses and loves her new barn, as well as her school and friends.
ANY FAVORITE SPOTS AROUND TOWN YET?
I love all the hiking we have found with incredible sunset views, and we definitely have our favorite restaurants for nights out. I find myself at AJs almost every day. Plus, it’s so fun and easy to go to a sports event or concert in Phoenix!
I’VE HEARD YOU LOVE HORSES! DO YOU RIDE A LOT?
Yes, I try to ride almost every day when I’m home. My mom was an incredible rider and competed in horse shows for many, many years. I love riding and showing horses, and my daughter definitely has the bug, too, as a third-generation rider.
WHEN YOU AREN’T ACTING OR RIDING HORSES, WE’D FIND YOU …
Trying a new recipe in my kitchen, working in my garden, riding my Peloton, or curling up with a great book.
OK, LAST QUESTION—WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I love watching classic movies, especially those from the ’80s and the ’90s. There are only a few iconic films that I can’t quote from.
You can catch Alison Sweeney starring in and executive producing Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries on Friday, May 19.

Spring has not only sprung across the Valley but also hopped its way into local restaurants—and with it comes bright, bold dishes and drinks that look as good as they taste.
If you’re seeking to colorize your culinary experience, do not miss the Sashimi Chef’s Selection ($38 and up) at Roka Akor ( RokaAkor. com). The dish features a selection of exceptionally colorful fish sourced from across the globe and arranged atop crushed ice with floral garnishes, which results in a head-turning presentation.
Koibito Poke ( KoibitoPoke.com) also offers several seafood dishes with sensational color. For example, its Tuna Trio Bowl ($15.49) features a dynamic trio of tunas with sweet chili lime sauce, pickled red chili, cilantro, jalapeño, lime, edamame, cucumber, red onion, pineapple, and masago.
Bluewater Grill ( BluewaterGrill.com) has a lusciously red Lobster Roll ($28), which is served hot and buttered or as a chilled salad.
Beyond the sea, chefs are looking to the garden for inspiration this season. J&G Steakhouse ( JGSteakhouseScottsdale.com) just launched an oh-so-green Sweet Pea Soup ($11) with Parmesan foam and house-made croutons, for example.
And Diego Pops ( DiegoPops.com )? They have Fruta Con Chile ($6), offered with a variety of sliced seasonal fruits and vegetables—watermelon, jicama, cucumber, and pineapple—paired with house made chamoy, chili powder, salt, sugar, and a little citrus juice. To top it off, the cup is sprinkled with a red chili blend seasoning.
Comfort foods can be colorful, too! Mowry & Cotton ( MowryAndCotton.com) has Buttermilk Buns ($9) sitting piping hot on a butcher block with a bevy of pink and green pickled vegetables, as well as seasonal jam and duck fat butter, and topped with lavender-pickled blueberries and dried corn.
And, Hearth ’61 ( MountainShadows.com) is now featuring Two Wash Ranch Chicken Roulade ($37) that is poached, bathed in ice, deep-fried, and then served with eye-popping purple and yellow cauliflower, as well as greens.
And then there are the cocktails.
The Italian Daughter ( TheItalianDaughter.com) has a fiery orange dream in its Venetian Spritz ($14), a twist on an Aperol Spritz.
Moving from orange to red, the Jale Berry ($18) at Fat Ox ( ILoveFatOx.com) is a blast of Bauchant Orange Liqueur, lime juice, blackberry puree, jalapeño, and Tequila Corrido Blanco.
For a punch of pink, head to Hash Kitchen ( HashKitchen.com) for The Whitney ($14), which features Pink Whitney Vodka, lemonade, lime High Noon, and passion fruit.
The Mexicano ( TheMexicano.com) goes for an ultra-blue hue with La Sirena ($13). It is made with Corazon Blanco Tequila, Cava, fresh lime juice, coconut, and Blue Curacao.
Blue Clover Distillery ( BlueCloverDistillery.com) transitions from blue to pale indigo, bordering on purple, with its Lucky Lady ($13). It combines Blue Clover Distilled Gin, wildflower honey liqueur, and Crème de Violette.
For a fully lilac-colored libation, head over to The Sicilian Butcher ( TheSicilianButcher.com) for the aptly named Violette ($12), featuring hibiscus liqueur, aromatized wine, apricot liqueur, and acai bitters.
Crust Simply Italian (CrustRestaurants.com) and The Genuine ( TheGenuineAZ.com) both go green with their spring offerings. Crust’s Cucumber Basil Martini ($12) glows neon when held up to the light and features Greenmark Vodka infused with cucumber and basil, as well as elderflower liqueur. At The Genuine, they have The Monk ($14), made with AZ Commerce Gin, Midori, Yellow Chartreuse, and a mind-numbingly delicious honey reduction.
And at Campo Italian (CampoItalian.com), the most popular drink on the menu since its debut has been the fluorescent yellow Limoncello Margarita ($14), made with homemade limoncello, Olmeca Altos Tequila, and fresh lemon juice.
Finally, there are even two-toned options available now thanks to hot spots like Toro Latin Rum Bar (ScottsdalePrincess.com). At Toro, enjoy a combination bright-red and pale-yellow libation thanks to the Empress of the West Sour ($16), which features Suntory Toki Whisky, almond liqueur, pinot noir, crème de cacao chocolate-flavored liqueur, and Mayan coconut rim.
When Stacey Newman purchased her house in 2016, there was a horse stable at the back of the acre property.
“It was 40 years old and dilapidated,” she says.
About two years after moving in, she was ready to renovate it and make it a space for herself.
Over the course of about five years, she worked on it in between building a tree house, an Airstream project, and living life. The south-facing garden windows give space for plant propagation and views of the bird feeders. The curtains are made from canvas drop cloth and hang from copper pipes.
“We started out with redwood because it was durable, and we actually repurposed some of the redwood boards from the old horse corral. It just went with the overall boho, rustic vibe that I love,” she explains.
Today the “she shed” is used as a quiet place to relax, a place where her children can watch movies or she can host a girls’ night, and a guest space. There’s even a kitchenette.
“It’s like an escape out there because it’s so peaceful and quiet,” she says. “It’s like you’re somewhere else.”
The desk was originally purchased for Newman’s son and the family has had it for about 15 years. It was refurbished and has sentimental value. It can be used as a desk or as a place to put on makeup.
Newman found many of the furnishings that are throughout at estate sales or from thrifting. This includes a tall cabinet, a leather chair, and an ottoman. The décor has evolved over time and as Newman settled into the space.
The tile on the floor is actually tile that was leftover from the main house. She had someone install the flooring, and then she stained them the terracotta color, which pulled together the color scheme throughout the house.

When it comes to medical aesthetics clinics, Valley residents’ choices are abundant.
But when it comes to one that’s owned and operated by a medical professional, that’s where Marie A. Baker, president and medical director of DermaCrush Medical Aesthetics, gains separation from the pack.
A. BakerThe board-certified nurse practitioner is one of the few medical spa owners to which “medical” truly applies. With her prescriptive authority, she implements medical-grade treatments and procedures while holding an active role as full-time medical director.
“It’s pretty rare for someone to have a medical background. But not having someone on-site can be dangerous,” says Baker, referring to possible reactions to products or procedures. “I meet every single patient that comes in. Nearly all of our treatments are medical grade. It’s important to be on-site.”
It’s also a reason DermaCrush Medical Aesthetics has thrived since launching in 2019.
“There are occasions in our society when appearances do matter, so taking off sun-damage spots and fine lines to look youthful and natural, too, gives you confidence and that shows in others’ perceptions.”Marie
Aesthetics
Baker specializes in cosmetic dermatology and medical aesthetics, and she has performed thousands of facial, body, and laser resurfacing treatments. Her non-invasive procedures with injectables and other top-notch skin care can take five or 10 years off someone’s appearance.
Her patients range in age from their 20s to 80s. Although 90 percent of her patients are women, she sees more male clients wanting the benefits of stopping time in its tracks.
This includes seeking a boost that starts from the outside. Baker sees many middle-aged patients who want to stay competitive in a younger workforce. She has seen patients experience improvements in their jobs, whether it’s in performance or promotions.
This demonstrates that her work’s value is not just skin deep.
“There are occasions in our society when appearances do matter, so taking off sun-damage spots and fine lines to look youthful and natural, too, gives you confidence and that shows in others’ perceptions,” Baker says.
Born in Tucson, Baker’s father was in the Army and moved her family to Phoenix when she was a year old.
Baker wasn’t exactly sure what drew her to the medical profession at a young age. Perhaps it’s that her mother was a nurse in Korea, where her parents met, or admiring the military and medical professionals she encountered while going to routine checkups at Luke Air Force Base as a kid.
“I just always had the desire to help people,” she says.
Baker used her nursing degree at Mayo Clinic and also in the intensive care unit. She had been in medical aesthetics for more than 10 years before she decided to break out on her own with DermaCrush.
In addition to being a mom of a son, 23, who will graduate from Arizona State University this month, Baker is also engaged. She balances her family life with being a business owner who sees patients 48 hours a week while doing all the administrative tasks and marketing.
She’s learned to be a one-woman show with ease. She also mentions fellow women professionals who helped her along the way.
“I think women are generally good at multitasking,” Baker says. “I’ve been fortunate to know some amazing women.”
But when it comes to running a successful practice, Baker credits taking the time to develop personal connections with patients and building trust rooted in genuine care for their life and what they wish to accomplish, personally and professionally.
“I recommend what’s best for them, never trying to sell them too much, and giving honest feedback and being extremely conservative with the treatment approach,” says Baker, who is accessible days, nights, weekends, and holidays. “We almost function like a concierge. We take care of our patients.”

Each year, droves of snowbirds from the Midwest descend on the Valley to escape their harsh winters. Isn’t it about time to return the favor?
Lake Michigan, which features more than 200 miles of sandy white beaches, is bursting with waterfront towns that cater to every level of traveler, and the region especially sparkles from May to October. Among the best spots for women seeking fun with friends both on and off the water is New Buffalo in Southwest Michigan’s aptly named Harbor County.
New Buffalo is an especially dreamy getaway for Arizona women, given it is just a short drive from either South Bend Airport or both Chicagoland airports. It also boasts several boutique hotels and resorts nestled right along the water, notably The Harbor Grand Hotel and the Marina Grand Hotel.
The Harbor Grand, which just opened a new spa, has views for days and a sophisticated, modern feel that echoes the accommodations one might find in The Hamptons. There is also an exquisite Italian restaurant on-site in the Terrace Room. Set along the waterfront, after a course or two, and while drinking in the view, it feels as if one is in the Mediterranean.
Like The Harbor Grand, sister property The Marina Grand, which completed a renovation earlier this year, benefits from a prime location along the lake— but in the marina versus the harbor, so it offers views of the most impressive sailboats and yachts on Lake Michigan. Splurging on a suite to share here is well worth it because they have extra-large decks as well as full kitchens. Some are even set across two stories.
Whether staying at the property or not, make it a point to visit Bentwood Tavern, the hotel’s lavish restaurant. The cuisine is primarily New American and is made with farm-fresh ingredients, and the cocktail menu wows.
Speaking of local libations, there are many from which to choose within just a few miles of both hotels, including Journeyman Distillery. Founded in 2010, Journeyman Distillery is set in what used to be Featherbone Factory, known for making corsets and whips during Prohibition. Today, the space is a working distillery that offers tours.
In addition to Journeyman, the region is also home to Beer Church and Ghost Isle Brewery, and they are just a 20-minute drive to Michigan’s wine country. Beer Church was an actual church in the 1800s, while Ghost Isle is equal parts brewery, cider house, and restaurant, and it is located along 156 acres of protected wetlands.
And then there is the wine country, which became popular in the area in great part thanks to Round Barn Estate, a working brewery, distillery, and full-scale winery. The estate features live music regularly, a massive restaurant operation, elegant vineyard cabanas, and the option to mix-and-match a tasting of food, wine, cocktails, spirits, beer, and adult slushies.
Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant, Free Run Cellars, Dablon Vineyards, Lemon Creek, Domaine Berrien, and Gravity Winery are also nearby.
The best way to imbibe in style? On a Fruitful Vine Wine Tour. Likely seen on Netflix’s juggernaut Love Is Blind: After the Altar, Fruitful Vine offers a vino coach, as well as an open-air, expansive trailer called the wine-o-wagon, both with custom tasting itineraries and expert drivers to take the hassle out of planning.
Shopping and dining abound in every direction, as well. Beyond the hotel eateries, those in the know make plans to visit Stray Dog Bar & Grill’s picturesque patio when in town, as well as Granor Farms’ state-ofthe-art greenhouse, which features a multi-course dining experience.
As for shopping, there are nearly endless locally-owned options, including Alapash Mercantile, Sojourn, Goods & Heroes, Frolic, and Stockholm Objects.
The only thing more convenient than the vast attractions near the lake is the lake itself. There are 10 public beaches scattered across New Buffalo that offer a combination of grassy and sandy dunes, ample watersport rentals, boardwalks, concessions, and lookout points.
Finally, for those looking to get a little wind in their hair, there is New Buffalo Sailing Excursions, which offers personal cruises on a 31-foot sailboat, including sunset and night sails, and is led by a skilled sailing captain.

The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Take a Flower Arranging Class Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
Go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events.
Whether you make the brews and treats yourself or head out to an official tea house, Mom will love sipping her beverage out of fancy china and snacking on tea sandwiches.
