Lifestyle Letter

Inspired with Love NOVEMBER 2017

"T

he best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." — Helen Keller The people in our lives that seem to have the most impact on us are the ones that inspire us. What a gift it is to have someone or something inspire us. Because without inspiration, there is no motivation. Helen Keller knew about inspiration. First, she was inspired to learn from her teacher, Anne Sullivan, and through the person she became, she helped to inspire others throughout the world to achieve more than they ever thought possible.

With November being the month we celebrate Thanksgiving, we give special thanks to all the wonderful people of San Clemente who help others in need. We give thanks to everyone who helps to inspire us to be better people by their example of humility and love. We thank FAM for helping individuals and family's in need. We thank COA for creating opportunities for youth seeking a healthy lifestyle. We thank the founder of Rainbow Sandals, Jay “Sparky” Longley, for his generous and numerous contributions. And we thank each and every person and business here in San Clemente who either donates, volunteers or contributes to the betterment of our fellow human beings. Happy Thanksgiving San Clemente.

Health insurance is a different story. The monthly premiums are

getting right up there with the mortgage payment. If you qualify for a subsidy from Obamacare which is Covered California that is great. It’s too bad that most of us working and living in South Orange County do not qualify for a subsidy. The idea being, we pay more so that the ones less fortunate pay less. If you have preexisting conditions then a Silver plan is the minimum advised plan choice. If you are healthy then I would suggest a Bronze plan to lower your monthly premiums and not get penalized tax-wise for not having any health coverage. Here is a twist that may make reading this article a true saving tip that will help you during open enrollment coming up soon. Most families stay on the same “Family” plan together. If you want to maximize your hard working dollar I suggest splitting the family into those family members who tend to visit the doctor regularly on a Silver Plan and guys who never go unless they get hit by a train enroll on a Bronze Plan. This will save you hundreds of dollars each year. Okay, it won’t if you get hit by a train every year but in the long run, you should come out way ahead of the game. Starting January 1, 2018, Anthem Blue Cross is pulling out of the OC marketplace for individuals/families. Let me show you what options you have to replace your current plan. Do not worry. It does not cost you a dime more to use my services. The insurance companies pay me a service fee directly so you do not have to be on hold for 45 minutes waiting to talk to them. Business groups are basically in the same boat. If you need help getting through your next renewal please do not hesitate to give me a call 949 795-7324 cell 949 366-4145 office.

BOB’s fine wines a community staple THE MOST EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION OF WINES IN OC

I

t seems everyone in San Clemente should be familiar with Bob’s Fine Wines. In business for 47 years strong,

the small, unassuming wine shop is a treasure trove of unique, hand-selected vintage wines. Son of the original owners and now owner of the shop, Robert Clanton has been caring for this San Clemente landmark since 1986. Through the years and through recessions along the way, when other wine shops have had to close, Bob’s Fine Wines has stood the test of time. Recently, even with outside pressure to vacate the premises during the remodel, the wine shop remains standing. What is it that sets Clanton’s business apart? To start with, Clanton makes an effort to do business well. In dealing with fine wine, he is very particular about what he offers to his customers. He buys very little from large suppliers and instead purchases directly from winery owners or smaller brokers who pride themselves on finding the best wines for their money. Clanton also goes through each portfolio himself and tastes every single wine, and he only chooses those he thinks are best. He never purchases wine through auction or the internet. He says he pays top dollar directly to the source for his vintage wines, which are unadulterated and authentic, and that he can deliver those wines to his customers in mint condition. What's more, for collectors, Clanton's rare, vintage wines go back to 1959 on French Burgundy, 1961 on French Bordeaux and 1974 on California Cabernet Sauvignon. Clanton also candles his wines. Before the bottle leaves the shop, he shines a Maglite through it to show the customer its quality. He shines the light through the side to check the color, and ullage of the wine, and he shines it through the bottom to check the sediment. 16

WILLS AND TRUSTS AND

INTESTATE

SUCCESSION

OH MY! YOUR LEGAL COMPASS

ARTICLE JENNIFER MEDEIROS, ESTATE ATTORNEY

H

ave you wondered whether you have the right estate planning documents in place? Should you have a will or a trust? Do you need an estate plan at all?

WILLS

If you do not own real estate and you have named beneficiaries on your bank

accounts, a will could be sufficient to distribute your assets. It is important to understand that a will does not avoid probate. If you own a home, even with a mortgage, a probate will be required when you die. Probate is a long, costly legal process where the court oversees your executor carrying out the wishes in your will. Probate fees and costs are approximately $50,000 for a typical San Clemente estate of $1,000,000. The fees are set by statute. This is money your family will never receive.

TRUSTS

If you want to avoid the cost and time delays of probate, consider a trust.

Your trustee is given the power to transfer your assets without a court order. Trusts can eliminate or reduce taxes, protect your assets, and they are private. Your assets and beneficiaries will not be a matter of public record as in probate.

INTESTATE SUCCESSION If you die without a valid will or trust, the law decides who receives your assets, and the court decides the person who will act on your behalf. California Probate Code 6401 and 6402 determines who receives your property. If you are married and your assets are community property the court will give your assets to your spouse at the end of the probate process. However, consider the outcome if you and your spouse die in the same accident. If you are married and your assets are separate property they will be divided one-half to your spouse and one-half to your only child or the children of your only child if your child is deceased. If you have more than one child, your assets will be divided one-third to your spouse, and your children will share two-thirds.

If you do not have a plan in place, it is time to act. If you want to direct who is in charge of your estate and where your assets will go, see your attorney. Visit JenMedLaw.com for more information

HAYDEN TALKS SURF & SAN CLEMENTE ARTICLE RICH SAUNDERS

Hayden

R

ecently, we had the pleasure to meet up-and-coming surf phenoms, 11 yr old Hayden Rodgers and his brother, 15 yr old Nolan, along with their wonderful mother, Stacy. They invited us into their home to talk one-on-one with Hayden and get his thoughts on surfing and hobbies, and to find out what he likes best about San Clemente.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED SURFING? My dad used to push me in on a Wavestorm, like probably four years ago when

I was seven, and he would have me stand up, and then push me into a wave when I was already standing up. WHATS YOUR DAD'S NAME? Jerry. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BEST PART OF SURFING IS? Probably getting barreled is the best part of surfing. ARE THERE ANY WORST PARTS? I think the worst part of surfing for me is usually walking out on a reef and slipping.

Like walking out at Lowers and slipping on the rocks. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR SURFING? DO YOU HAVE ANY RIGHT NOW, OR JUST KIND OF ENJOYING THE RIDE? Well I really don't know right now. JUST ENJOYING IT? Yeah. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SURFERS? My favorite surfers are probably Clay Marzo,

Julian Wilson and John John Florence. ANY PARTICULAR REASON YOU LIKE THOSE SURFERS? I like Clay Marzo because he like does these crazy airs

and lay-backs, and so does John John. CONTINUED >

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SURF HERE IN TOWN? Well I mainly like to surf Lowers. ANYWHERE ELSE YOU SURF? Sometimes I surf Beach-House and Rivie. WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO SURF WORLDWIDE? Probably Bingin, in Bali. SO WHERE'S THE GNARLIEST PLACE YOU'VE EVER SURFED? Gnarliest place I've ever surfed was

probably Cloudbreak or Sunset. HOW BIG WAS IT AT SUNSET? The sets on the outside were like 15 feet. AND HOW BIG WAS IT AT CLOUDBREAK? The sets were probably like 15 - 18 feet. THAT'S PRETTY HAIRY! Yeah. I've had the opportunity go to the Volcom House a few times on the

North Shore of Oahu and train with Jason Shibata and Riddle. They are Volcom Hawaiian Coaches. They've taken me out at Sunset and Pipeline and taught me where to sit. WHO ARE YOUR SPONSORS? Volcom, Rumaner Surfboards, Electric Eyeware, Shade Sunscreen,

Banzai Bowls and Laguna Surf & Sport. HOW WAS YOUR RECENT TRIP TO BALI WITH TEAM VOLCOM? Super good. We got to surf different

parts of the island. One day we went to our guide Muklas's house for a day on another part of the island. He's sponsored by Volcom and surfs, and we got to surf those different waves for like two days.

BESIDES SURFING, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO DO? I like to

skateboard, snowboard, mountain bike and I love to fish. WHAT'S THE BIGGEST FISH YOU'VE EVER CAUGHT? I haven't really

gone fishing for bigger fish. The biggest fish was probably a threeand-a-half to four pound Spotted Bay Bass. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE SUBJECTS IN SCHOOL? Probably math. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL? The sea turtle. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ONE OUT IN THE WATER? Yeah, I saw one

yesterday at Lowers, and I've seen them in Hawaii every time I go. Nolan, Hayden & Stacy

DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? Yes, two French Bulldogs named Boss

and Duke. Duke is nice, but Boss is a little crazy with strangers, whose nicknamed 'The Demon' or 'Devil Dog'. WHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO EAT AROUND TOWN? My favorites are Bagel Shack, Biggie's Burgers,

Sancho's Tacos and Banzai Bowls. DO YOU HAVE ANY BROTHERS OR SISTERS THAT SURF? I have one

brother Nolan who's 15 and is also sponsored by Volcom. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING IN SAN CLEMENTE?

Probably that we can just ride our bikes down to Lowers. November 2017 | San Clemente Lifestyle

his recipe is my favorite part of my family’s Thanksgiving buffet: mom’s Twofer twice-baked potatoes. Twofer twice-baked potatoes are stuffed with half mashed potatoes, half mashed sweet potatoes, and topped accord-

ingly; a big hit with both kids and adults. To make, you can use your favorite mashed potato recipes. If you don’t have any favorites, follow the recipe listed here.

3 sweet potatoes 1/2 C butter (1 stick) 1/4 C brown sugar

DIRECTIONS

Splash of milk

Lightly oil the baking potatoes and sprinkle with salt. Bake at 350 degrees until

soft (about 50-60 minutes). Once cool enough to handle, slice the potatoes in half,

lengthwise. Scoop out the insides, leaving enough to hold the potato shape. Mash the insides, adding butter, sour cream and cream cheese. Add milk to desired texture.

Mashed potato toppings, any or all of: Shredded cheese

Add garlic, seasoning salt and pepper. Scoop prepared mashed potato mixture back into the potato shell, filling half of the shell. Top with desired toppings.

Simply because you are a Divine Spiritual Being having a human experience. When I was about eight years old, I planted an apple tree in my backyard. I cultivated it from a seed and then my mother helped me plant it out back. It was growing well and I was so proud of it. I remember it got to be about 12 inches high. I was dreaming about the apples that were going to fall off that tree! In a rush, likely to see a football game on TV, my dad was mowing the lawn with vigor and haste and he plowed right on over my apple tree. I was devastated; simply crushed at the tender young age of eight. That planted the proverbial seed for my life lesson in this category. Since then I have been (overly) sensitive about people valuing (or not valuing) my contribution, my cultivation, my efforts. And as I think of this story I have the awareness around
