There’s something magical about the way food brings us together. Whether it’s an impromptu dinner with friends, a carefully planned holiday spread, or a spontaneous happy hour after work, food has a way of turning everyday moments into shared memories. This October, as the air turns crisp and autumn settles in, we’re celebrating all the delicious ways food connects us—from cozy gatherings to lively nights out.
Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for a good happy hour. There’s nothing quite like catching up with friends on a perfect Texas patio at sunset, drink in hand, as laughter fills the air and the day winds down. It’s not just about the cocktails. It’s about the pause, the presence, and the people.
In this month’s Food & Drink Issue, we’re serving up a feast of inspiration. From our spotlight on local restaurants and must-try menus to the best karaoke spots where dinner turns into a show, you’ll find plenty of reasons to explore our city through your taste buds.
We’re also proud to highlight our Nonprofit of the Month: Meals on Wheels, a vital organization dedicated to delivering nutritious meals—and much-needed connection—to homebound seniors. Their work ensures that some of the most vulnerable members of our community are not only fed but remembered, respected, and cared for with every visit.
And with Halloween just around the corner, don’t miss our favorite spooky snacks and creative treats—perfect for parties, family nights, or simply embracing the playful spirit of the season.
Here’s to the meals that bring us closer, the stories shared around tables, and the flavors that linger long after the last bite.
Cheers,

Meals on Wheels Senior Services (MOWSS) of Rockwall County has been a steadfast presence in the community since 1978, built on a simple yet profound mission: to keep the elderly and disabled citizens of Rockwall County living independently with dignity in their own homes. What began as a grassroots effort to deliver meals to a handful of homebound neighbors has grown into a vital nonprofit organization serving hundreds of seniors across the county every day.
For many older adults, aging in place is their greatest wish. But living independently often comes with challenges, nutritional needs, limited mobility, and social isolation, to name a few. MOWSS meets those challenges head-on by providing not only nutritious, home-delivered meals but also essential safety checks and daily interaction with caring volunteers. This personal connection is often the only human contact a senior may have all day. Volunteers and staff alike often become extended family for many clients, ensuring their physical and emotional needs are not overlooked.
The impact of MOWSS on the Rockwall community is both measurable and deeply personal. In 2024 alone, over 95,000 meals were served to nearly 600 seniors and disabled individuals in Rockwall County. These meals are more than food, they are a lifeline. The organization also provides caregiver support resources, pet food for companion animals, and holiday and birthday gift programs to make sure no senior feels forgotten.

Local support is the cornerstone of this work. All donations directly support services for local residents. Meals on Wheels Senior Services operates without state or federal mandates, allowing them to respond quickly and creatively to the unique needs of their community. Whether responding to an unexpected crisis such as a senior without electricity, or developing innovative programs to combat loneliness, the team at MOWSS is always working to uplift and protect one of the community’s most vulnerable populations.
Yet, none of this is possible without community involvement. There are many ways for individuals, businesses, and civic groups to make a difference. Volunteer opportunities include meal delivery, wellness check calls, special event assistance, and helping at the new Senior Life Center currently under construction. Financial contributions are also essential. Even a modest monthly gift can provide ongoing support that sustains vital services year-round.
opportunities to invest in the future of senior services in Rockwall County.
MOWSS’s construction of a new Senior Life Center and on-site commercial kitchen directly responds to the urgent and growing needs of Rockwall County's aging and disabled populations and represents a strategic investment in the long-term sustainability, equity, and impact of the organization’s services. At the heart of this initiative is the state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, which will restore their ability to prepare and deliver fresh, nutritious meals daily. The new kitchen will give MOWSS full control over food quality and nutrition, allowing them to offer meals that are health-conscious, culturally appropriate, and prepared with compassion and care.
“These meals are more than food, they are a lifeline.”
One of the most meaningful ways to support the mission of Meals on Wheels Senior Services is by attending its signature annual fundraising event, the Wings of Wisdom Gala. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Hilton Dallas Rockwall Lakefront. The evening is a celebration of the wisdom and resilience of the seniors MOWSS serves, featuring live entertainment, impactful stories, a luxury raffle, and
Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County is more than a meal provider; it is a beacon of care, connection, and community. As the county continues to grow, so does the need for support. Getting involved today helps ensure that no senior in Rockwall County ever feels hungry, forgotten, or alone.
Whether delivering a hot meal, sponsoring a table at the Gala, or offering a warm smile to a neighbor in need, every act of support strengthens the foundation of care that MOWSS has built for over four decades. Your time, generosity, and heart can change a life, right here at home.

It’s just before noon at Sear Steakhouse in Rockwall, and Executive Director Mandy Mendenhall is juggling a lunch reservation, checking emails, and preparing for the night’s private event. The steakhouse has a full calendar, and by fall, there’s rarely an empty day.
“We fill up fast,” she says, laughing. “Some of our regulars are already booking into next year!”
Since opening its doors in 2020, Sear has carved out a niche as more than just a fine dining restaurant. Its private events like rehearsal dinners,
corporate gatherings, and charity fundraisers have become a core part of what the steakhouse offers the community.
“We wanted to create a place where people could gather, celebrate, and connect,” Mendenhall says.
“That was always the goal, and I think we’ve done that.”
At the heart of it all is a private dining space that seats up to 55 guests with lake views, custom-printed menus, and AV setup. Guests control their music, mic, and projector, making it a good fit for business presentations and toasts.
Sear Steakhouse Hosts Private Events Where Every Toast and Taste Feels Celebrated
“Our goal is to take the stress off,” she says. “You walk in, and everything’s already handled.”
Corporate dinners are the most popular event at the restaurant. However, Sear regularly partners with local nonprofits like the Children’s Advocacy Center of Rockwall County, hosting annual events like Bourbon with the Boys, which pair curated spirits with fundraising. The restaurant also hosts its own events monthly, like mahjong tournaments, wine blending classes, and more.
“We’re constantly hosting something," Mendenhall says.
For those planning a private gathering, Sear offers menu options ranging from $75 to $110 per person, and a food and beverage minimum instead of a room fee—$1,900 on weeknights, $3,900 on weekends.
Event inquiries can be made at www.searsteakhouseandlounge.com.
• No room fees – Just a food and beverage minimum, keeping costs simple and transparent.
• Custom printed menus – Personalized for each event, often featuring company logos or event names.
• Dedicated service staff – Servers work only your event, ensuring uninterrupted attention.
• Full AV capabilities – Private room includes projector, screen, microphone, and music controls.
• Fine dining experience – Multicourse service, tablecloths, and upscale presentation match the main dining room.
• Flexible seating – Accommodates up to 55 guests with lake views and room to mingle.
ARTICLE BY KEN G CRAWFORD PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WADE'S LANDING
Just at the intersection of Olive and Fannin Streets, where the sidewalks carry echoes of the past, a warm hum of conversation drifts from behind dark-paneled windows. Inside, the lighting softens, and couples settle into corners where glasses clink and dishes arrive with a low swirl of steam. It’s Wade's Landing, named for Terry Utley Wade, the geologist who discovered the “rock wall” formation. The kind of place where you want to soak up the moments and time stretches gently—where no one’s in a hurry to get home.
The setting balances old and new in just the right way. Original beams and rustic textures speak to Rockwall’s pioneer history, but the design avoids nostalgia. Instead, the space invites you to linger: intimate booths, modern lighting, and music that wraps around the room like a favorite jacket.
And the food—well, it’s not trying too hard. Familiar dishes are elevated without being fussy. A fork cracks gently into a crème brûlée’s sugar shell while someone across the table laughs with a glass of something golden in hand. A plate of fried cod lands between them, crisp and hot, with a side of dill tartar sauce that tastes like someone actually cared. There’s a richness to the flavors, but also a simplicity—a kind of honesty that makes the meal feel grounded, even elegant.
Somewhere in the back, an old tune plays—maybe it’s live, maybe it’s just well chosen—and a few guests near the bar tap their feet in time. A new couple leans closer over deviled eggs topped with bacon jam. Someone orders dessert, choosing between tiramisu, crème brûlée, and seasonal fried churro pie, not because they’re still hungry, but because it’s that kind of night.
And as the moon rises over this small Texas town, there’s something quietly comforting about knowing that places like this still exist—not flashy or fast, just warm, thoughtful, and waiting to be discovered.
Vidorra isn’t just a restaurant. It's a celebration. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a symphony of color, energy, and the enticing aromas of a kitchen deeply rooted in Mexican tradition yet unafraid to innovate. True to its name, Vidorra (which translates “the good life”) is a place where the flavors are bold, the cocktails are vibrant, and the atmosphere hums with the buzz of a crowd that knows they’ve come to the right place.
Executive Chef Rodman Shields, an award-winning culinary talent with over 25 years of experience, has crafted a menu that honors heritage while introducing playful, modern twists. While traditionalists will find comfort in staples like barbacoa street tacos or richly layered cheese enchiladas, Shields’s creations invite exploration. The queso-birria empanadas are a prime example. Crispy golden pastry giving way to a molten, savory filling will have you reconsidering what you thought you knew about birria. Your abuela is sure to be proud!
On a sweltering Texas afternoon, the watermelon salad is pure refreshment: sweet melon mingled with bright mint, tangy cotija, and the gentle bite of red onion and nopales, all expertly lifted by a cerveza-lime dressing. It pairs beautifully with a cold margarita
or one of Vidorra’s signature cocktails, where fresh-squeezed citrus and quality spirits do the talking.
Conveniently situated at I-30 and Lake Ray Hubbard, Vidorra’s Rockwall location is easy to reach, but the experience feels like a world away from the everyday. The space is alive with chatter and clinking glasses, the bar gleaming under warm light, and the patio filled with friends lingering over one last round on any given evening.
For those who appreciate cuisine with character and a setting that’s as social as it is stylish, Vidorra is where you’ll want to linger. This is modern Mexican dining with heart and soul.

Halloween is a widely anticipated holiday, but it can bring on anxiety and dread for those who suffer from food allergies, sensory overload, or certain diseases.
As a community, it’s important to educate ourselves on the physical and emotional impact these conditions have on our kids. For those children who feel excluded—and yet have to watch their costumed friends giggle as they devour Kit Kats and Snickers —we can make a difference.
Here are some simple alternatives that can help keep all our kids feel safe and included:
Colored pumpkins are a terrific visual cue for awareness. A blue pumpkin signals that a child has autism or sensory processing disorder. A teal pumpkin indicates that a house offers non-food treats (think pencils, bookmarks, and stickers!) for those with food allergies. A purple pumpkin represents epilepsy awareness.
Food allergens can impact a child’s quality of life in a major way—and are secretly disguised in non-food items too. For example, when choosing non-food “fun” items, be careful of things like moldable clay which may contain wheat. For those with celiac disease, this is a red flag. Similarly, provide non-sugary treats as an alternative choice for diabetic children (Rice Krispie treats made with stevia, anyone?).
02
03 04
Rarely do we speak of “invisible” disabilities, which can completely disrupt a child’s life. Kids with focus issues, anxious tendencies, or those with certain autoimmune conditions can also hide emotions behind their own masks. Thus, it’s best to refrain from asking things like “Why aren’t you wearing a costume?” Or, even worse, to push for an answer if you are met with silence to your question. 01
For children who may suffer from sensory overload, providing treats in a bowl closer to the sidewalk may be helpful. This option allows them to grab candy without having to walk up (on a sometimes darkly lit pathway), ring a doorbell, and face a person with a scary mask! Children with limited mobility (or in wheelchairs) may also appreciate this easier accessibility to goodies.

How To Stay Festive And Healthy? Sure Thing
Halloween is typically filled to the brim with salt, sugar and carbs. It can be hard to stay on the nutrition wagon during spooky season, but there are plenty of fun ways to add a festive spin to favorite healthy dishes.
With luck finding a melon or watermelon at the store, simply carve it like a jack-o-lantern and make the mouth large enough to have other sliced fruit emerging, such as cut pineapple, sliced grapes and apple chunks. Along the side, peel mini oranges and add a green stem to mimic pumpkins.
These fan favorite boards can easily be kept healthy with some additions. Make any treat spooky with edible eyeballs. Adding them to a small snack such as mini bell peppers or grapes and strawberries is a fun way to stay on theme without sacrificing a healthy streak. Eyeball salami rolls also can be added, starting first with a green olive in the center, surrounded by a roll of mozzarella cheese and then surrounded by salami or even prosciutto.
This fall staple easily can be incorporated into a fall gathering or Halloween night by carving jacko-lantern faces in orange peppers, and resuming a favorite recipe from there. Serving bread on the side? Use a skull or pumpkin shaped cookie cutter to re-shape it.
Hummus and pitas can be made scary in no time. Use a ghost shaped cookie cutter to shape pita bread, lightly toast and serve with red pepper hummus, which is usually orange in color.
The easiest bet for a quick and healthy Halloween treat? You can’t go wrong with a veggie tray shaped like a jack-o-lantern. Use baby carrots as the base, and cucumber or celery to shape the mouth and stem. The eyes? Two round bowls of veggie dip.
