WITH THE SMELL OF MANURE IN THE AIR AND BOOTPRINTS ON THE NEW BLANKET OF SNOW OUTSIDE A PARKER HORSE ARENA, ABOUT 10 CHILDREN LINE UP INSIDE WAITING FOR THEIR TURN TO RIDE ON A SATURDAY MORNING. Many of them wait all week long for the chance to saddle up on either Apollo, Whinna or Stella, the rescue horses at Reining Heroes, a nonprofit therapeutic and beginning horsemanship riding center in Parker. “Riding gives me a sense of being free, and it’s very relaxing,” says Keaton Miller, 18, who has been riding with Reining Heroes’ owner, Paula Quillen, for about six years. He’s visually impaired and according to his mother, says the weekly riding helps him strengthen his core—and his self-confidence. Paula started Reining Heroes two years ago. “I fell in love with the concept and thought I could actually do this. It was just a feeling. It was a calling,” Paula says.
“Riding gives me a sense of being f r e e , a n d i t ’ s v e ry r e l a x i n g ,” says K e ato n M i l l e r , 1 8 , w h o h as b e e n r i d i n g with Reining Heroes’ o w n e r , Pau l a Quillen, for about six years.
Having been working in horses for many years at various therapeutic centers, she began as a volunteer in a program called Pegasus at Laz E Acres Stables in 2000. “I volunteered for about two hours and realized I needed to be the teacher.” Paula doesn’t believe in putting a label on a person with a disability. “So a little thing I do is I make them fill out all the paperwork, but I never read it because that’s not who they are. Everyone has a special need, and I just try to teach them because the rewards are so much better all the way around. They’re neat kids, and the parents are really cool.” Paula becomes attached to not only the students but the parents. She says, “I love you” to the students and parents as if they are a family. Paula explains that she receives joy from working with her students. “I get to see them grow.” CONTINUED >

Paula says she gets to see their true personality, and she doesn’t judge them for their disabilities. Laura-Anne Cleveland is a mother of five, three of whom have special needs. She says finding Reining Heroes was priceless not just for her children, but for herself as well. “I love to ride, so it also kind of gives me my solace,” Laura-Anne says. “Also, talking to Paula, she’ll say, ‘I hear it’s kind of rough right now,’ and so it kind of gives me my own counseling too.” Laura-Anne says many therapeutic horse facilities focus on the lessons, but it’s different at Reining Heroes. Paula and everyone at Reining Heroes, she says, focus on building relationships with the riders and helping them emotionally just as much as physically. For her and her family, Laura-Anne says, Paula is as good as seeing a therapist because of her ability to get them to open up about their difficulties. Laura-Anne says she notices a difference in the behavior of her sons who have been diagnosed with autism, ADHD and other disabilities within 24 hours of a riding session. “I think it’s just important for people to know this exists, that it’s just as valuable as seeing a counselor, it’s just as valuable as sports or, you know, anything else,” she says. “And especially when you’re losing hope in other arenas, it can give you a lot of hope when you see them progress.” For Ethan Flanagan, 15, and his family, finding Paula, according to his mother, Melissa Flanagan, was, “a really good match.” From the moment Paula met Ethan, she knew she would be able to connect him with a horse that would see him as a child and a rider, not a child on the autism spectrum. “It was spot-on.” Ethan is autistic. His mother says autism is an umbrella; there is a large spectrum of autistic characteristics. “If you’ve met one kid with autism, you’ve met one kid with autism.” And for Paula, she says everyone, no matter their ability, is welcome at Reining Heroes. “You never know whose life you’re going to change.”

The 20th-century abstract artist plays prominently here, as does op artist Victor Vasarely, whose works populate the walls throughout the 8,000-square-foot modern house. “My dad had a couple of Calders, and he gave me one in my last year of college,” the homeowner says. That gift many years ago inspired his love of all things modern. The homeowners, who worked together as a sales team before retirement, spent more than 20 years dreaming up every detail of this unique home finished in 2013. They even served as their own general contractor during construction on the 5-acre lot with sweeping Front Range views. But this is no stuffy modern art museum. These homeowners like to have fun. The foyer features a round Plexiglas floor insert, where you can peer down into the basement bar and game room. “It sometimes freaks people out to stand on,” the homeowner says. As a manufacturer’s representative in consumer electronics for 46 years, the homeowner says he spent decades traveling the West visiting customers’ luxury homes in places such as Aspen; Sun Valley, Idaho; Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Santa Fe, N.M. The couple’s dream home started to take shape in his head during those trips. He made note of what architecture and floor plans worked and what didn’t. He started to develop a sense of his own style. “I’ve just always liked the contemporary style, with its clean lines,” he says. He also got design inspiration early on from the electronics company, which he says was always on the leading edge of in-home audio and visual systems. “The first line we repped was from a company from Denmark called Bang & Olufsen,” he says. “Their hi-fi equipment was always interesting and modern. COMFORT FOOD MAY MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE, BUT I’M (ALMOST) WILLING TO BET MY MAMA’S RECIPE FOR TEXAS CHOCOLATE SHEET CAKE THAT IN COLORADO, A STEAMING BOWL OF GREEN CHILI AND HOMEMADE TORTILLAS WILL ALWAYS HIT THE SPOT. Add a classic margarita (no sweet-andsour mix here, thank you), and you’re golden. You’ll find all of the above at Sierra in Lone Tree, a year-old restaurant from the Brinkerhoff family, famed for their beloved Tex-Mex Denver eatery La Loma. Sierra uses some of the same recipes, such as the green chili, rellenos and those margs. Deanna Price, director of operations for the Brinkerhoff Hospitality Group, says many La Loma devotees have long traveled from Parker, Elizabeth and Castle Rock just for the green chili and now get their fix much closer to home. But Sierra offers so much more to the South Metro area than the standard, albeit satisfying, Tex-Mex fare La Loma is known for. When you first enter, you’ll walk right past the roasting chickens on the rotisserie and see the cook staff busy tending the wood-fired grill with such hearty fare as the Cowboy Steak, King Salmon, Louisiana Killer Shrimp, Double Bone-In Pork Chop and the Sierra Burger. Deanna says the concept behind Sierra was all about comfort food using long-cherished family recipes, which have roots in Colorado, Texas and Louisiana. “The goal was to be able to present American classics every day, such as rotisserie chicken, seafood, spaghetti, and still have those Southwestern influences,” Deanna says.

Sonny’s West Texas Spaghetti came from the owner’s grandpa. And some of the seafood items, such as the Kona Coast Ahi Tuna Sashimi on the appetizer menu, were inspired by family trips to Hawaii. Deanna says the Brinkerhoffs’ La Loma roots and Southwestern travels show up not just in the food but also the entire look and feel of the restaurant. The 8,400-square-foot restaurant sits high above Ridgegate Parkway and Interstate 25, just next to Cabela’s. With architecture reminiscent of a rustic A-frame lodge, there’s exposed red brick walls, hammered copper and wooden accents throughout. Did we say hammered copper? Sierra features two 35-seat horseshoe-shaped bars— one on the patio and one inside—that feature hammered copper tops handmade in Mexico. Inside, it’s easy to get carried away on a weekend afternoon with the expansive picture-window views of the Denver Tech Center and downtown beyond. And better to be stuck here on a Friday evening watching all the I-25 traffic lights than to be stuck in it.
