At a time when so many things are mass produced, scores of us are embracing “traceable” products—precious goods that are made by hand in small quantities. Whether it’s our desire for authenticity or our concerns about ethical consumption, makers matter to us. This month, we celebrate those makers among us: the artists who create objects of aesthetic value and the artisans who imbue artistry into their craft to make something functional. The lives and inspirations of a woodworker, a painter and a culinary artisan are explored in our February “Makers” issue, along with the story of two brothers who have perfected the falafel and a couple who turned their beloved home into a canvas for inspired living. There’s even a little background on some of the photographers and writers whose eyes and ears brought prose and pictures to this month’s issue. Enjoy our February issue! Happy Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day and Presidents’ Day. May you be blessed with love, the promise of an early spring, and a day off work with the kiddos.

Parker Library Celebrates Noon Year’s Eve Parker Library hosted a Noon Year’s Eve celebration on December 31. The afternoon included a 3-2-1 countdown where confetti-filled balloons hanging from the ceiling were popped. Kids and their families made New Year’s necklaces and party hats, face painters were on hand, plus—of course—snacks!

The design will unify the entirety of the DAM’s campus, streamline visitor access to the museum’s collections, exhibitions and serve as a beacon for the surrounding neighborhood. The DAM has raised $110 million toward the capital campaign, and in November 2017 voters approved $35.5 million in funding for the project through the City’s general obligation bond initiative to help fund key infrastructure and safety upgrades for the nearly 50-year-old building. In recognition of a $25 million lead gift from Board Chairman Lanny Martin and his wife, Sharon, the North Building will be renamed the Martin Building upon reopening to the public. From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO

1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

A concrete mantle with striated veins was created to surround the fireplace, simulating actual marble, while a sumptuous royal blue tuxedo sofa brought in from New York City “is so comfortable,” says Jamie. “People think it wouldn’t be, but it is.” Adding to the glamour of the room, the Klenins also installed custom crown moulding and wall mouldings, which included hand-painted decorative millwork inside each frame. Although the home’s transformation was extensive, the Klenins have only just completed the main level. There are visions for a remodel on the upper and lower levels—but Jamie says they plan to enjoy this fresh new vibe for awhile. “I'm glad we stayed,” says Jamie, “we both are.”

We talked with dermatologists Dr. Christopher Messana and Dr. Kate Messana of Elevated Dermatology in Parker to gather tips for skin care during these winter months.

chapped hands, carry a non-greasy moisturizing hand cream and apply it after each hand washing.” 4. AVOID OR MINIMIZE HARSH, I RRITATING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS “Skin care products that you tolerate well in the summer may be too harsh and irritating in the colder months. Reduce or elimiate skin care products containing alcohol, fragrance, retinoids/retinol/retinoic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids and exfoliants.” 5. WEAR NON-IRRITATING CLOTHING AND USE HYPO-ALLERGENIC LAUNDRY DETERGENT “Clothing and laundry detergent residue contained in our clothing may become irritating to winter skin.” 6. HUMIDIFIERS CAN HELP “While it may be a challenge to add moisture to ALL of the air throughout your home, keeping a humidifier either in your bedroom or integrated into your home’s heating system can help.” 7. STAY HYDRATED “Colorado’s dry climate, elevation and many sunny days make it especially important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water!” 8. WEAR SUNBLOCK EVERY DAY (YES, EVERY DAY!) “Even on a cloudy day, the vast majority of skin-damaging ultraviolet radiation passes through the clouds and damages our skin. Wear sunblock with SPF30 or higher every day.” 9. MAYBE IT’S NOT JUST A STUBBORN PATCH OF DRY SKIN "If a rough, scaly patch does not resolve after applying moisturizer for two weeks, have it evaluated by a board certified dermatologist. That patch of ‘dry skin’ may actually be skin cancer."

24 HOURS WITH AN ARTIST MICHELLE NAHERNY OF HONEY B'S MACARONS “A macaron has to mature, like a fine wine,” says Michelle Naherny, maker of fine French macarons and owner of honey B’s macarons in Highlands Ranch. That carefully refined process takes up to four days, during which delicate meringue shells are rehydrated with custom fillings that include fine ingredients like honey from her family’s hives in Castle Pines. “They’re a canvas for creating something beautiful and delicious,” says Naherny, whose custom designs grace private parties and events of all kinds. 5:30 AM

RORY'S DINER IS THE NEW FAMILIAR PLACE IN TOWN. It's a diner-style restaurant that celebrates Americana with a Colorado flair. Music piped from the speakers is a blend of 50's, 60's and 70's, "but mostly fifties, except in the evening—then I put in more seventies to rock it," says Rory's owner Jeff Holland. The diner’s popularity is evident in the literal growth of the place; last month it moved from a 25-seat corner in the Victorian Peaks building to the space next door, where it can now accommodate 84 patrons. But who's Rory? I ask. The owner gets up without a word and grabs a menu from the hosting station. He opens it in front of me and it's all there: a little boy with spectacles and demure smile is pictured at the bottom of the first page. It's his nephew, Rory, at age 2 1/2, before he lost his battle with cancer. This diner, along with Rory's Catering and soon-to-be opened Rory's Soda Shop (in the vacated space next door), is Holland's homage to him. "I noticed that Downtown Parker didn't have any businesses like this, a place where families could come and talk and hang out together," Holland explains. "I wanted to bring back the age of innocence." And there's no TV. "I get a lot of flack for that. The guys tell me they want to watch the game, and I say, 'talk to your family!'" Holland takes pride in sourcing locally, and

Americana and includes the local flavors of Colorado (think: Southwestern influences). A perfect example is the Breakfast Renello, made with scrambled eggs and cheese stuffed in a roasted poblano pepper, dipped in batter and fried golden brown, then topped with red or green chili. Although Rory's Diner and catering continue to receive raves around Parker, Holland's ultimate goal is to make a positive local impact. "I want to be a part of the community. I volunteer at my daughters' schools, I hire more than 25 local kids each summer," Holland says. "I just want to provide a nice place for people to come hang out and be with their families."
