Effortless September Style

N

ow more than ever, our personal style tells people who we are — our political persuasion, our social status, our religious belief, which “tribe” we belong to. We might wish it weren’t so, but according to acclaimed designer Miuccia Prada, “when you get dressed you are making public your idea about yourself. Clothes are powerful signifiers.” Wow, that’s a lot of pressure. Who needs the stress? And who wants to look like they put a lot of effort into their look?

In all honesty, I try hard to look like I didn’t try hard. I don’t mean I ‘try hard’ like I stare at my closet every morning, try on 3 outfits, and ask my husband if this dress makes my butt look big.

I mean I do a little advance work so that I can quite literally be ready to walk out the door in 20 minutes. I wait until the rare shopping mood strikes and do a couple of strategic pre-season shopping trips where I capitalize on online sales, local boutique finds, and unique consignment pieces. And then I’m hopefully done thinking about it for a while. Whether you’re a planner or more of a wear-what-my-hand-touches-first type, we hope you’ll enjoy this month’s focus on effortless style — for men and women. The good news is you don’t even need to go to the mall! Check out cutting-edge fall looks you can find at local boutiques, five for women (“Rites of Fall,” p. 14) and one for men (“Sharpdressed Man,” p. 11).

The architecture team of Fentress Architects of Denver and Bostonbased Machado Silvetti collaborated with the museum to create the design for the refreshed North Building and new Welcome Center. This work followed several years of planning for the North Building’s renovation, which began in 2012 with structural feasibility studies, followed by a master-planning process with Denver-based Tryba Architects. Upon the project’s completion, the North Building will include new spaces for the museum’s renowned Design and Western American art collections, as well as additional exhibition space. The work also will complete Gio Ponti’s original vision for visitor access to stunning 7th-floor mountain and city views, add exterior site-safety improvements and update environmental and other key systems to current generation technology.

ffortless fall style is what outfitter Alexandra Suppan of Trumaker

Denver is all about. “Fit is everything,” says Suppan. “I’m a per-

sonal stylist, so I do all the measuring, help guys pick out items for their wardrobe, and do wardrobe consult for them if they need it.” The Trumaker brand describes itself as “builtto-fit clothing for men — like custom, but easier.” “Trumaker is about simplicity," says Suppan, “getting things into your closet that fit, where everything

coordinates

with

everything

else. So a guy can pick a blazer, and he’s going to have 12 different shirts that will go with that.” “ The 'rustic businessman' - that whole

lumber-sexual look - is big in Denver this fall, so we wanted to show guys how they can get 3 completely different looks with a flannel shirt. “I think it’s amazing when a guy can get a fitted flannel that’s a little lighter weight that be worn tucked in our untucked... dressed up

or down. Even my guys who are CEOs and partners in law firms buy flannels all the time.” Trumaker clients span the gamut in age, occupation and taste. “I’ve got clients in their mid-20s all the way up to their mid-70s. Maybe they wear business-casual for work, but they have to wear suits a couple times month. I have construction workers who want to spice it on the weekend. “Confidence

is

so

important,”

says

Suppan. “When you’re wearing something you feel good in, you do better — in your job, as a father, as a friend.” Trumaker.com

s autumn ushers in the requisite transition in wardrobe, it’s an ideal moment to consider adding an accessory

that is often overlooked: eyewear. “Frames are one of the first things that people look at you,” says Carol Canada, the director of retail operations for Vision Care Specialists (VCS). “It’s wonderful to have a couple pair of glasses to be able to say ‘Who do I want to be today? Do I want to be all business in a black pair or do I want to be sassy in a red pair?’” The endeavor to pick out new prescription glasses can seem overwhelming. After all, it’s not like a haircut that will quickly grow out; it’s what you’ll be set with for at least the next year. It’s not just about fashion. Your sight plays a part in everything you do. “We need to get to know our customers as individ-

uals to help them select the best eyewear for them. We ask questions like ‘What do you love to do on the weekends?’” Canada says. “People can be afraid to spread their wings,” she says. “When it comes to eyewear, we see you differently than you see yourself. We try to break you out of a rut, but we don’t pre-judge. We might say, ‘I’d like to see you in this green. It brings out the color of your eyes.’ It’s fun when people have those ‘a-ha’ moments,” says Canada.

“We’re good at explaining why ‘this works and this doesn’t. If you’re a bike rider, this will work—this won’t.’ We love letting people know why something will or will not enhance their lifestyle. ‘In this environment you should consider this lens. In this lighting you should use this tint.’” Canada is proud of the six VCS locations’ deep selection. “Most of the VCS offices carry between 1000-1300 frames. The average optical store has around 500-700,” she says. And not all frames and lenses are created equal. “You get what you pay for in quality and technology. As with TVs, there is such a thing as high-definition vision. Technology is constantly improving how well we can see.” A common mistake: forgetting to look at sunglasses. “You need ultraviolet protection, especially living a mile high in Colorado,” notes Canada. “We want to get you into the right product for your lifestyle,” Canada says. “There’s a balance between what you’re seeing and what you’re wearing.”

Inspired By (CON TI N U ED) WHAT’S HOT NOW • Flattering bigger frames. “They’re a little bit larger,” Canada says. • Rich tortoise frames. “Both men and women are wearing them.” • “Men are choosing to wear color,” says Canada says. Navy Blues, Cargo Green and Dark Burgundy. • Translucents in Blues, Greens and Blush. • Round shapes like Aviators, and Navigators which are a little more squared and not as tear-drop shaped —for both for prescription and sunglasses.

A common mistake? forgetting to look at sunglasses. “You need that protection, especially in Colorado,” notes Canada.
