Lifestyle Letter

At the Holidays, it’s the Thought

W

hat’s your favorite holiday tradition? Pulling out the decor? Sending the annual holiday cards? Making those once-a-year family recipes? For me, it’s my secret, annual fantasy of taking my immediate family to a remote island and exchanging homemade gifts made of seashells. Just kidding. Sort of. The truth is that connections to family and loved ones are what keep me from escaping to a warm beach somewhere. Robin and Jodi, on location Truly, the winter holidays are when I pause, spend quality time with special people, and vow to do better next year. And my favorite holiday tradition, although it should happen more than once a year, is thinking of my loved ones very purposefully and personally. What would make them most happy? What would make them smile? It’s in this spirit of “otherness” that the Lifestyle team — which this month welcomed Associate Editor Jodi Horner (yay!) — shared stories of both the material and the spiritual gifts the season brings.

Tangible gifts, thoughtfully given, can bring intangible gifts, too. What better way to say “I love you” to the road warrior on your list than with a gift of a cashmere travel kit? What would make mom happier year than filling her home with a fresh floral bouquet every month of the year? For these and other ideas for everyone on your list, check out this year’s holiday gift guide we’re calling “Luscious, Luxe, Tech and Tots” (p.19). “A Show of Tradition” (p.12) sneaks a peek at other families’ traditions and offers ideas for starting your own. And if thoughts of family have you hankering to research your family tree in the new year, you’ll want to brush up on the latest genealogy tips and resources in “Who Am I?” (p.26). For all this and more, from entertaining to epicurean delights at Jozi’s Kitchen & Shebeen, we hope you enjoy our special “Holiday” issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together! From the whole Lifestyle team, here’s wishing you a season that’s happy and filled with those who mean the most to you. And a very happy and blessed New Year! Smiles,

t’s finally here--the biggest, baddest, reddest, greenest, sparkliest holiday of all! If you aren’t doing a tinsel-confetti happy dance right now, maybe the holidays have meant

for you some extra spending, extra stress, extra sweets (and pounds), extra-long lines--excess. So, Grinch, it’s time for a reframe.

IMPORTANT THING.” – MARIANNE KOLACZKOWSKI, MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER.

The best way to cultivate the spirit of the season is by participating in--or starting--a holiday tradition that connects entire the family. Christmas and holiday traditions honor your family, enhance time spent with loved ones, and help us find joy and meaning as the year draws to a close.

BAKE WITH LOVE. Baking season officially started in October, so maybe you’re already in full swing. If not, it’s time to get out the cookie sheets and get to work! You might surprise your neighbors and your children’s teachers, or ship care packages to family far away. The whole family can participate, and you can do your baking during the Broncos games!

TAKE AN AMAZING FAMILY PHOTO. Capture a moment in time, not just so you’ll have fabulous Christmas cards, but because during the activity of the year, all the photos you likely took were selfies, candids,

Families include an extra setting at the table for an unexpected guest, and a lighted candle in the window signals all are welcome.

VOLUNTEER AND DONATE. Pick from a gift-giving tree, volunteer with your church or contribute to a favorite charity. Visit someone lonely, participate in a Secret Santa exchange or plant a tree to offset all those being chopped down. Do what you can to ensure others will have magical holiday moments, too. For the little ones, ask them to help you pick a gift they want, wrap it together and give it away. It will be a gentle lesson in how good it feels to give.

REVIVE A CHILDHOOD TRADITION. By sharing it with children or friends— whether it’s traditional baking from an old family recipe or something small like buying your children a special ornament each year--the tradition will strengthen your family bond and build a bridge between the generations. Jozi’s Kitchen & Shebeen

South African soul food that warms the spirit ARTICLE GREG GLASGOW PHOTOGRAPHY RAEMI VERMIGLIO

"The short rib potjie is slow cooked in our potjie pot, a large, round, cast iron, three legged pot from the Netherlands, for 6-8 hours. We start serving it on Friday evening and serve it until we run out, which usually happens by early Saturday evening." —Nadia Malik

I

f you think the standard Mexican and Indian fare is as about exotic as food gets in the southern suburbs, then Jozi’s Kitchen

and Shebeen in Parker is sure to expand your horizons. Co-founded by South African brothers John and Angus Hicks, the year-old, order-at-the-counter restaurant specializes in the global cuisine that is their country’s hallmark. “Just due to its location in the world, South African food has influences from cuisines and cultures all across the world— English, Dutch, Malaysian, Indian and French,” says Nadia Malik, who co-owns Jozi’s with her brother, Omar.

“You’re going to find a very eclectic menu.” That means you’ll find everything from burgers to curry,

Dutch-style farmers’ sausage to zingy chicken wings spiced with African Peri Peri pepper. The menu also includes salads, samosas, kebabs, desserts, and bobotie—South Africa’s version of shepherd’s pie. “It’s a twist on familiar comfort foods,” Malik says. “Bobotie, for instance, is an improvement on shepherd’s pie. It has the egg custard on top instead of mashed potatoes, and the meat mixture is cooked with apricot jam, almonds and raisins,” she explains. “Most of the South African flavors tend to be sweeter.” A recent Friday-night visit found a mix of curious families sampling unfamiliar cuisine and South African expatriates engaged in boisterous conversation over the foods of their homeland. Jozi’s weekend special of fall-off-the-bone, slow-braised lamb shank and a combo plate featuring curry, bobotie and sausage made a compelling case for this South African soul-food restaurant. The restaurant has its roots in a shack that the Hicks brothers opened a few years ago at TheBigWonderful, a weekly outdoor food, beverage and crafts market in Denver’s RiNo neighborhood. That turned into a mobile eatery that garnered Westword’s Best Food Truck award in 2016, and eventually into the brickand-mortar location in Parker. Although Jozi’s may be more of an urban concept (the owners would eventually like to open locations in Boulder and downtown Denver), Malik is happy that the more adventurous eaters in Parker and Denver’s southern suburbs are finding their way to the restaurant. “There has been a learning curve, but I think we’ve been really well-received in Parker, and the word is still slowly but surely spreading,” she says. “We’re still getting new people coming in almost daily saying, ‘We heard about this from a neighbor, and they say we just have to try it.’"

Do-it-yourself Arrangements:

LESSONS FROM BOBBI O. PLANNING Select your appropriate size vase. A low cube vase is good for short arrangements like centerpieces, as it won’t block guests’ views. For gift or decorative bouquets you might want a larger, taller vase and arrangement. CHOOSING FLOWERS Seek out the perfect flowers by popping into Parker Blooms. You don’t want your flowers to all be the same height. “Picture a fairy jumping from flower to flower,” says Bobbi. “You want variant heights and textures.”

Choosing

HANDLING FLOWERS Try not to touch the petals too much, as they can absorb oils from your hands. (Hydrangeas are especially sensitive to oils.) FLORAL FOAM Use floral foam “oasis” for your base. Pre-soak your oasis in water with Aquaplus flower food to extend the life of your flowers. Cut oasis to size, place in your vase and fill with water. CREATE A BASE

Handling

Using clear floral tape, create a grid atop your vase. For taller arrangements, you’ll create a weave in your vase using the greenery. CUT AND PLACE FLOWERS AS YOU GO Cut and place. “You can’t cut them and set them down.” The bottom of your stems will start scarring immediately and won’t absorb the water when you put you place them. Remove any unwanted leaves, and strip away the stuff you don’t want. With roses, be sure to take off the outside petals called guard petals, as

Floral foam

they’re bruised and show dark spots. PLACE YOUR FLOWERS 1. Greenery Leatherleaf and Salal Tips are good greenery choices for everyday arrangements. For winter greenery use pine or cedar. Place flowers at an angle instead of straight up and down. For taller arrangements where you’re weaving the greenery together, cut the greenery to the right length and place it into the vase. It’s best to use flowers in odd numbers. 5, 3, 1. If something sticks out, cut it off.

Create a base

2. Focal Flowers Next, add your focal flowers. For short arrangements, place them into the grid or oasis where the greenery has been placed. For tall arrangements, place the flowers within the weave to secure. 3. Filler Last, add filler. Limonium, also known as Misty, is the “new” baby’s breath, says Bobbi. Waxflower works well, too. For holiday arrangements, you might want to add a fern like Plumosa. Put a bow around the neck or directly in the arrangement, and voi-

TOP RESOURCES FOR TRACING YOUR FAMILY TREE:

Louisa May Alcott, the author’s prize descendant

“When you’re working on your heritage, it’s not just one family that’s important—it’s the community they lived in. Most people 100 years ago and before tended to live in the same place for a long time. And migrating family members would often follow each other. Understanding what was going on when your ancestors were living is important in finding out more about them.”

Ancestry.com Available for free at most public libraries. DNA testing kits and services Some services provide more detailed reports than others. Do you research, and, according to one HRGS microbiologist, “Approach with caution, as they’re not foolproof.”

Local public records and family ledgers are priceless.

Google Books Books.Google.com is a service that searches the full text of books and magazines that Google has scanned and converted. Newspapers NewspaperArchives.com and Newspapers.com provide obituaries, community news and more, from 1690-today. Wikis Websites on which users collaboratively modify content and structure directly from the web browser.

DIY

Reuse & Rejoice! LET THERE BE LIGHTS PHOTOGRAPHY RAEMI VERMIGLIO

T

here’s no shortage of Do-It-Yourself ideas online these days, and after seeing these dressed-up bulbs on display, we decided to try this hol-

iday project for ourselves. With its simplicity and sparkly appeal, the hardest part of this craft will be deciding whether or not to let the kids help out!

What you’ll need:

-Burned-out (or new) bulbs in sizes of your choice -Mod Podge (which adheres better than glue) -Paint brush with a small tip -Ribbon -Crafting wire -Glitter!

28

Parker Lifestyle | December 2017

ONE

-You will want a surface that can handle a mess--this is glitter, after all! -Set up small bowls or cups to catch glitter and re-dip bulbs if necessary.

TWO

-If you are going to hang the bulbs, we found it a bit easier to get the “loop” on prior to getting the bulb covered in glitter. Using crafting wire, circle it tightly around the base of the bulb a few times, create a small loop, then circle the wire around the loop some more time to secure it.

THREE

-Apply a thick but even coat of Mod Podge over the bulb, then sprinkle the glitter over a bowl. Dip it into the glitter to cover any bare spots. If needed, apply touches of Mod Podge on bare spots and add more glitter. -Dry the bulbs either hanging or on the side. -Optional: Enhance them with snowflake stickers, glitter glue, or edging once the glitter has dried.

Fixin' for the season A RUSTIC HOLIDAY IN PRADERA COUNTRY ARTICLE JODI HORNER | PHOTOGRAPHY RAEMI VERMIGLIO

Parker Lifestyle | December 2017

Jake and Shannon have devised a system where “she decorates, I cook,” Jake says. As for how they keep their 5,200-square-foot kid-filled abode company-ready: “We just keep the kids busy!” Shannon says with a laugh.

S

hannon and Jake Korth’s spacious walk-out ranch is a hard-working home, accommodating their family’s needs year-round as they manage the plethora of activities and events for their five children. And with their penchant for hosting parties—the Super Bowl, murder mysteries, Halloween—just to name a few, the home’s main living space is put to the test on a regular basis. But it’s when the holidays approach that

Shannon’s decorating blood starts to race. A Pinterest aficionado, she describes her style as “country, rustic and cozy—I want to make people feel comfortable. “It’s always evolving,” Shannon says of her holiday style. “This is the first year I’ve used checkers,” she notes the addition of tartan pillows on the sofa and spiraling ribbon on the towering 12-foot tree by the hearth. This year, Angela Tyler of Aragon Interior Designs rendered her professional eye to the Korth’s annual decking of the halls. “Shannon had a great direction,” Tyler says of their initial consultation, “she ran with the ideas.” To amp-up Shannon’s well-defined style, Tyler suggested “lots of twinkly lights” throughout the greenery displays, and more color—in this case, red. With their holiday decorating out of the way, Shannon is ready for the parties to begin, and she has a tried-and-true method to keep the house ready in the frenzy of five-kid action. "We just keep the kids really busy so they don't have time to make a mess!" CONTINUED >

“One of the selling points of this house for us was the number of outdoor living spaces,” Jake says of the six areas they enjoy, including the outdoor living room (Jake’s favorite), and the bistro area by the front door (Shannon’s favorite). December 2017 | Parker Lifestyle

DESIGN PRO TIPS from Angela Tyler, Aragon Interior Designs The DETAILS Little things can make a big impact, but don't overload the scene. Focus your attention on the details without making it cluttered. The CANVAS Tyler is a believer in a neutral backdrop. “Keep the majority of permanent features in your spaces neutral," she says. It's also important to be

aware of how trendy certain elements might be before installing something permanent, such as a rustic wood wall. "In five years that is going to seem very dated." The COLOR Once you have your neutral canvas, "always try and bring in your favorite colors to give a room that pop of color." Tyler suggests rotating elements like throw pillows, blankets or area rugs throughout the seasons to keep things fresh.

“Shannon had great direction...she ran with the ideas” — Interior Designer Angela Tyler

“We try to arrange gatherings so people will meet over there,” Shannon points to the dining room, “but we’ll wind up with 50 people in here!” The granite island’s base is covered in the same stone that’s on the family room wall, both of which Jake masoned himself. 32
