THEME REVEAL: PALM BEACH YACHT CLUB, A SAILBOAT SOIR É E SETTING SAIL THIS FALL 2024.
“One simply must trust that the path to personal glory will reveal itself if one remains resolutely sunny.” - Maxine Simmons, Palm Royale
Amongst the palms of Park House’s verdant enclosed patio, the Green Room, guests buzzed with excitement on Thursday, April 11,
tag featuring the auction’s chic logo (which is pink and green, natch!).
Captaining the ship as Parent Teacher Association President, Kate Boatright shared the elementary school’s fitting theme for the upcoming year as “Ahoy Armstrong!” Immediately following, the auction chairs and Vice
as John S. Armstrong Elementary School auction co-chairs Natalie Lesikar, Laura Price, and Samantha Wortley announced the theme for the school’s fall fundraiser.
Ladies, grab a caftan and pack your bags! Armstrong parents, donors, and guests will board the “Palm Beach Yacht Club” for a sailboat soirée on the evening of Friday, November 8, at Dallas Country Club.
Upon arrival, the resolutely sunny co-chairs gifted auction committee members with a personalized luggage
President of Development Andrea Cheek handed out pink captain’s hats to the elated guests, who participated in a champagne toast (and even a champagne saber!).
In the sea of school auctions, it’s important to remember that this is no regatta. That’s exactly why the co-chairs selected the theme, “A rising tide lifts all boats.”
Before you sail into summer, be sure to follow @ArmstrongAuction on Instagram for details (and even outfit inspiration!). Cin-Cin!
SADELLE’S SIT DOWN REVEALS CHEF’S CONFIDENCE IN BRAND’S DALLAS FOOTPRINT
ARTICLE BY DIANA OATES
When news broke that Major Food Group was bringing three concepts to our area in 2022, it was met with excitement and anticipation. And while Dallasites might have been surprised, Chef Mario Carbone of Major Food Group says that it was a decision that has long been a long time coming.
“You can study the analytics, you can talk to as many people as you’d like, but at some point, you just kind of have to act on
that gut feeling,” Carbone said. “We made the call and decided Dallas was going to be a great market for us.”
Hooked on a feeling? Maybe. But the real kicker came in the form of a perfectly packaged piece of prime real estate at Highland Park Village.
“To be able to get your hands on this prime real estate is too good to pass up,” Carbone said. “So, we started building a team. First Sadelle’s and then Carbone. Vino came along because of the way the
space was broken up there. We wanted to offer something a little more robust for everyday dining.”
Carbone spoke with a calm confidence when chatting about his concepts that have managed to thrive despite the dog-eat-dog dining scene that Dallas can sometimes have the reputation of having. I guess if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. That is, if you know who you are.
“I think at this point customers know what they are going to get from our
“I THINK AT THIS POINT CUSTOMERS KNOW WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO GET FROM OUR BRAND. YOU KNOW, WHAT THEY ARE IN STORE FOR. IT’S NOT JUST A MEAL, IT’S A NIGHT OUT.”
brand. You know, what they are in store for. It’s not just a meal, it’s a night out.” Carbone said. “If anything, I think Dallas really craved the most real version of our concepts.”
Whether it be knowledge of the menu, a great wine pairing, or the creativity to switch things up, Carbone says his staff is up to the challenge and encourages guests to have a conversation with their server on how to make the meal
as personal as possible. To him, this creativity in the cuisine is the beauty of the brand.
“I’ll have a conversation with my waiter to see how I can make what I’m in the mood for,” Carbone said. “I’ll take the veal parmesan and I’ll ask them to make me a veal Milanese with a salad on top instead of cheese and sauce. It’s fine to have these conversations as it’s our servers’ job to make a meal for you.”
And while Carbone and Vino paint the perfect picture of a lively yet elegant night out on the town, the brand isn’t all red sauce and Caesars. Saddle’s, shall we call her the sophisticated sister of the pasta brothers in the Design District, sits sophisticated in Highland Park Village attracting mainly a breakfast and lunch crowd.
“The bread and butter of Saddle’s is breakfast, brunch, and lunch,” Carbone said. “I think dinner is really an amenity to the neighborhood. We want to make sure that we are providing a great all day dining place that is bustling for as many hours as possible. The dinner service is continuing to grow which we love to see.”
Speaking of Saddle’s, Carbone shares that the savory selections here are some of his favorites. And while I confessed that I wasn’t a big fish for breakfast girl myself, he divulged that smoked salmon is his favorite source of morning protein.
“People are on board with the bagels and lox for breakfast here,” Carbone said. “It’s the fish salads that are still a little foreign to people in Dallas.”
As far as new concepts coming down the Dallas pipeline from Major Food Group, Carbone says the possibility is always there, but nothing is officially in the works. For now, Major Food Group is simply celebrating wins within the Dallas brand umbrella.
The designers at furniture boutique and art gallery Blue Print share their secrets for a perfect summer soirée.
From the time we’re kids, summer has been characterized by a few core tenants: sunshine, relaxation and (most importantly) fun. Whether you’re spending a weekend poolside or having a backyard barbecue with friends, the key to hosting an unforgettable get-together is bringing that same playful summertime magic to your space.
How does one do this? According to the designers at furniture boutique and art gallery Blue Print—Cynthia Collins, Caroline Eastman, Leslie Jenkins, Carrie Jane Pogoloff and Lucy Ward—, it all goes back to that primary essence of summer: have fun with it! We sat down with them to learn their secrets for taking a sunny season soiree up a notch.
One of the key summer entertaining trends Blue Print’s designers are noticing is the fearless mixing and layering of patterns, colors and textures. “No need to put too much focus on pairing things that ‘match’ perfectly,” the designers say. “Don’t let the little voice in your head keep you from trying something unexpected. Some of the best tablescapes we’ve created have come as a result of much trial and error, and very unexpected pairings!”
Different colors evoke different emotions, so try adding an adventurous pop of color to give your guests a joyful feeling. Or, if color isn’t your thing, try layering as many textures as you can.
“Visual interest is key,” the designers say. “The more visual information your guests have to take in, the more delighted they will feel. Of course, cohesion is key.”
Pair Blue Print’s patterned Hydra dishes with the Citrus Garden Tablecloth to add a bit of sophistication to any table, while remaining playful and approachable.
Vintage is a hot trend in all spaces right now, but especially the intermingling of modern and antique pieces in interior design. “It only makes sense that these interior trends would translate to entertaining as well,” they say. “What better way to appreciate grandma’s silver tray than to use it to serve your loved ones? Pop a few of our colored glasses on an antique tray to serve your friends and dress up the evening a bit.”
If you have some antique pieces you’d like to use but aren’t sure how to style them, Blue Print offers tabletop consultations in-store. “Clients can meet one-on-one with a tabletop manager who can answer any questions they have,” the designers say. “Clients can also bring in items they have to mix and match with new items from Blue Print. We have multiple rooms of in stock items that can be taken home for a party that night.”
To nail your summer soirée, properly prepare your space beforehand, so you can relax and enjoy once your guests arrive. One aspect Blue Print’s designers emphasize is the importance of having enough seating options for your guests. Pull up extra Blue Print garden stools that can be used for setting down beverages or as extra seats.
If you’re entertaining outside in the Texas heat, you’ll want to keep your drinks cold and abundant. “Fill our Jumbo Resin Trough with ice and display canned beverages in the center of the table for the taking, or drop some jaws by serving a specialty drink from our Resin Pitcher.” the designers say. “Because of its material, it will not sweat!”
Summer entertaining is all about having a good time with your loved ones, so enjoy the process, and don’t take it too seriously. “If you have fun setting up, it will show and translate into your guest’s experience,” the designers say.

Take me out to the ballgame, y’all. With the team’s first-ever World Series title under its belt, the Texas Rangers are without question the current darlings of the local sports scene. The team’s super sophisticated domed stadium, Globe Life Field, is a breath of fresh, cool air, especially when it comes to oppressive summer temperatures in Dallas-Fort Worth. But it's the team on the field that makes the magic, and Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy has done a magnificent turning the former MLB cellar-dwellers into proud champions. For kids there are camps, clinics, the Jr. Rangers kids club and much more.
It is a land far away, yet right under our noses in downtown’s historic West End District. Since opening in 1992, the facility, which now takes up about two city blocks, has been celebrated as place to observe rarities of earth, water, and sky. The focus is on exotic wildlife few would ever see -- from Saffron toucanets and Hawkheaded Parrots in one of the largest avian collections in the world, to wonderous sea creatures, such as river stingrays and sharks, plus a variety of colorful reptiles, curious primates and more, all housed in natural habitats researched and constructed with meticulous detail.

Bobby Fierro, owner of Uptown Appliance Repair, shares his journey as an entrepreneur.
Bobby Fierro's venture into the appliance repair business wasn't just a career choice; it was a response to adversity and an observation of market demand. We sat down with Bobby as he shared the journey of Uptown Appliance Repair and its goal to become a household name in Texas.
Uptown Appliance Repair traces its roots back to the aftermath of the 2009 housing crisis, which severely impacted Bobby's parents' real estate business. To make ends meet, the family turned to reselling unwanted goods and discovered a niche in appliance sales
during garage sales. Bobby, sensing an opportunity, delved into appliance repair, initially offering his services anonymously on Craigslist.
The moment that changed everything came during an early service call, where Bobby's lack of official branding led to a client's dismissal. Determined never to repeat that experience, Bobby founded Uptown Appliance Repair in 2012. Today, the company has two locations in Houston and Dallas, with plans for a third in Austin.
According to Bobby, operating as a family business has its unique dynamics. While it provides personalized attention for each client, challenges sometimes arise from workload limitations. Nevertheless, the commitment to exceptional service and customer satisfaction has been the cornerstone of their longevity.
"We believe in setting our own standard for service," Bobby explained, highlighting their exclusive 2-year warranty and investment in factory-trained technicians as what sets them
apart from other businesses in the same industry. Notably, Uptown Appliance Repair specializes in high-end brands including Subzero, Lacanche, and Viking.
Beyond business success, Uptown Appliance Repair prioritizes community engagement. They actively participate in charitable initiatives like the DePelchin Holiday Project and sponsor local school programs, embodying a commitment to giving back.
Despite their growth, the company remains true to its roots as a family-owned business. Bobby and his brother Joe, both accomplished in their own right, oversee the company's operations. Their vision extends beyond Texas, with plans to expand nationally and venture into home warranty services.
"We want to elevate the experience for consumers," Bobby emphasized, hinting at Uptown Appliance Repair’s future as a comprehensive home solutions provider. As they continue to evolve, Bobby and his team remain committed to redefining excellence in appliance repair and customer care. uptownappliancerepair.com
