Inspired by the peaks and valleys of life, Laura Petka’s “Connecting Points” Series of paintings captivate attention, with a posture of humility.
Balanced between boldness and subtlety Petka’s paintings anchor a room through depth
and dimension. “Art should evoke introspection and emotion around the various ways that life’s relationships connect, contrast and change over time ” Combining calm smoothness and chaotic texture, moments in time are emulated as clusters on her canvas

'Tis the Season
Wishing you all the most wonderful holiday season this December!
I’m sure you all have a most favorite family story about the holiday season, whether the funniest ever or the most heart endearing, each of us cherish what this time of year brings. Perhaps this year a new favorite story will come about and become one that continues to give back to you for years and years to come.
Our hope is that this issue shares our passion for others via the features showing how so many of you give to those they don’t even know. Whether the campaign is managed locally by huge volunteer efforts such as the recent Cattle Baron’s Ball or through corporate energies exemplified by City Lifestyle’s non-profit “The Kingdom Building Foundation” - these and more you’ll find in our pages. Our stories represent the gift of peace within through quietly supporting those in need.
Yes I mentioned the gift of Peace - “Peace, Peace on Earth and Goodwill Toward Men” - as the favored holiday tune goes, is the message shared for December. And, sharing peace within your own personal thought-life can be a place to spend a little time to reflect and nurture. Don’t you long for perfect peace today? -for yourself, for your family, for your team at work, for your friends, for your community? Gaining and maintaining internal peace becomes a gift all its own, that keeps on giving. Noting Isaiah 26:3 - “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you." These are wonderful words to lean into and cast away worry, doubt, fear or lies.
We hope you enjoy the features shared about the many trusted parts of our community, and share that spirit of peace all around you. We partner with you in giving that gift of peace today, as passionately as you can, to yourself as well as those you surround yourself with each and every day.
May you all enjoy a wonderful and peaceful holiday season.

THE CATTLE BARON’S BALL REACHES NEW HORIZONS
ARTICLE BY LAUREN STONE
Headliner Carrie Underwood
Iconic North Texas event rings in a recordbreaking year of funds in the fight against cancer.
The Cattle Baron’s Ball, a signature Dallas event in the fight against cancer, has become synonymous with charitable giving, community spirit and high-profile entertainment. This annual gala supports the American Cancer Society (ACS) and raises essential funds for cancer research, prevention and patient services. With roots in cowboy culture and philanthropy, the Cattle Baron’s Ball exemplifies the resilience and generosity of North Texas communities.
The goal of the ACS is straightforward: to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world without cancer. Playing a crucial role in this mission, the Cattle Baron’s Ball directs funds toward groundbreaking research, advocacy and education. Attendees come not only for entertainment but also to contribute to a cause that deeply affects many lives.
Headed by Cattle Baron’s Ball Co-Chairs Lora Farris and Marjon Henderson, who both plan events for a living, the 2024 edition marked the 51st year of this inspiring event—and with the iconic Carrie Underwood headlining, it promised to be exceptional. “We spent a lot of time wanting to find the right entertainer for this year,” Farris and Henderson noted. “It was important to us to have a female performer in honor of the women who work tirelessly on CBB. It was such an
Chairs Marjon Henderson and Lora Farris
honor that she accepted, and we couldn’t be more happy with her performance.”
The Ball’s committee is composed of over 100 prestigious women and business leaders in the Dallas community. Inspired by the collaborative efforts of this hard-working group of women, the 2024 co-chairs express how special this committee is: “It’s a group of female volunteers from all areas of life. Many work, many have children, many volunteer for other organizations, and together, this group throws the largest fundraiser for American Cancer Society in the country—that’s magical!”
Along with the committee’s dedication, local businesses, sponsors and volunteers are vital to creating a memorable experience. The evening’s festivities typically include live auctions, delicious food and remarkable performances, all designed to inspire generosity among attendees. “Cattle Baron’s is such an incredible night because not only does it raise money for ACS, but it is a night for gathering with friends and family, networking with community leaders and having a lot of fun while you do it,” Farris and Henderson say. “All of this is thanks to the businesses and sponsors who make the night possible.”
In addition to supporting the fight against cancer, the Cattle Baron’s Ball is also a celebration of the American West, where guests often don their finest cowboy-chic attire. This year’s theme, New Horizons, inspired thoughtfully curated decorations reflecting both the co-chairs’ styles and the event’s heritage. “We wanted the look and feel of the night to be authentic to our personal style, which I think we achieved,” Henderson says.
As the night progresses, powerful stories from cancer survivors and advocates remind attendees of the event’s impact. One moment Farris and Henderson note they’ll never forget was the honoring of friend and fellow committee member Claire Phillips and her family. “For the live auction room to be quiet, all guests listening to Claire’s story, and then coming together to double our goal to name a grant in honor of the Phillips family, was absolutely inspiring,” Farris shares.
These personal narratives underscore the ACS’s vital role in providing resources and support. From funding innovative research to offering emotional assistance, the work of the ACS is transformative, and the Cattle Baron’s Ball is crucial in sustaining these initiatives. “This year we will break the $100 million mark for cancer research over the past 50 years of CBB,” the 2024 co-chairs proudly declared, emphasizing the lasting impact of the event. As attendees leave, they carry with them not just memories of a remarkable night but also the assurance that their participation brings us closer to a cancer-free world.

LAUREN’S PICKS
1. Burgundy Notes: There’s something about embracing the richer hues this season. I’m captivated by burgundy –a hue that adds instant elegance and allure. I find myself drawn to this deep, vibrant shade, as it brings warmth and sophistication to my wardrobe. Whether it’s a cozy sweater, a flowy dress or a chic accessory, burgundy adds that perfect touch of richness.
2. Demure Dressing: A charming little cardigan will soften any look this holiday season, especially when paired with a lace-trimmed midi, making it feel instantly more festive. Finish the look with a burgundy heel, matching burgundy clutch and dainty gold jewelry, creating a lovely ensemble perfect for a double date or friend’s dinner party.
3. Glimmer and Glam: A short, sleeveless dress in a jacquard-weave with metallic threads is a perfect choice for the holiday season. It’s versatile enough to wear on its own or layer a silk blouse underneath for added depth and texture. For daytime events, style it with riding boots for a chic yet comfortable look. When it’s time for a cocktail, swap in black heels and a matching clutch to elevate the outfit.

4. A Statement Earring: The easiest way to dress up any outfit is with jewelry. A bold statement earring is my jewelry item of choice for this holiday season. Put away your dainty jewelry for a moment and try something more dramatic. There are many brands making affordable statement earrings, such as Heaven Mayhem, Jenny Bird and Aureum Collective. In the designer space, brands such as Khaite and Bottega Veneta have beautiful pieces that often provide inspiration for many other designers. Silver is the metal of the moment, but if you are a gold person, stick with that. Earrings and a little lipstick will transform any look very quickly!
5. Sheer Layers: The sheer trend has been dominant on many designers’ runways for several seasons. For holiday, I love the idea of sheer pieces that are embellished in some way…sequins, lace, pleats, etc. Ideas for wearing this trend: Wear a sheer lace top under a blazer with jeans or leather pants and a kitten heel pump. Pair a sheer lace skirt with an oversized cashmere sweater and boots. Or layer a sheer skirt over a slip skirt with a tissue thin sweater and a leather jacket. If you’re feeling daring, you can wear your sheer skirt with a longer blazer buttoned and add a pump. In Dallas, I look at stores such as Market in Highland Park Village for these unique sheer pieces.
6. Power Suit: Getting dressed is so simple when you choose a suit or matching set. Not only are these pieces wonderful additions to your wardrobe because of their versatility, but they look so polished and elevated when worn together. We all feel that holiday rush in December, so it’s nice to not have to figure out what goes with what when you’re getting dressed for a party. If a pant suit isn’t your thing, a coordinating knit midi skirt and cardigan is a more feminine option. I also love the look of a great mini skirt and strong shouldered blazer. In Dallas, places like Simkhai and Veronica Beard have many great options in this category.
About Katie
I am a wardrobe stylist and personal shopper. I am a Park Cities native and still live here in Highland Park with my husband and three daughters. I have always loved fashion and clothing, but mostly, I love people. Wardrobe styling and personal shopping combines both of these passions. I love how the right clothing can transform someone’s confidence, and helping someone feel confident is my goal and the greatest part of my job.

Renowned fashion designer Coco Chanel once said, “I only drink champagne on two occasions, when I am in love and when I am not.” The late Ms. Chanel made an excellent point: champagne can bring out the celebration in everyone it seems.
Coupes opened in December 2022, located in the Shops of Highland Park on Oak Lawn Avenue.
For those who have never been inside, some things are immediately apparent, says Eric Chiappinelli, who is the co-owner. “They’ll notice an elegant, welcoming space,” he says, punctuated by a unique, centered circular bar and a circular ice trough with a dozen bottles for by-theglass pours.
The pallet is a relaxing soft green and pink, with intimate banquettes, tables, and a lounge area for larger groups.
Coupes is especially distinctive around the holidays. “We decorate beautifully, have more live music, and feature a special selection of seasonal cocktails,” says Chiappinelli.
He considers Coupes to be a neighborhood bar for the Park Cities and South Highland Park. “We are here to stop by and enjoy a glass of champagne or wine, or celebrate birthdays and anniversaries as well as engagements, weddings, and graduations.”
Chiappinelli takes pride in differentiating the bar from others in a similar space. “First is our champagne-driven focus, though, of course, we have plenty of still wines, too,” he says.
In September Bureau du Champagne, USA honored Coupes as one of their 10 best restaurants and bars for enjoying champagne. The list is compiled by the association that represents the houses and winegrowers of Champagne, France recognizing establishments that celebrate the sparkling wines from the region. Other U.S. cities in the top 10 included establishments in Miami, Baltimore, Chicago, and New York.
“Every wine and champagne we offer is either French or from Texas,” says Chiappinelli.“We have a full bar with a great cocktail program, and our food is curated with small plates that enhance our champagnes and cocktails.”
Coupes features a dozen or so champagnes and sparkling wines by the glass daily, plus “Five different flights with themes like all rosés or all champagnes made by women-led brands,” says Chiappinelli.
“The experience at Coupes is more than a glass of wine; it is a superb glass in a beautiful setting with a friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive team.”

Dallas Live, Learn, Grow at Contemporary Ballet
FOUNDER LINDSAY DIGIUSEPPE SALIH IS BUILDING A NEW GENERATION OF TALENTED DANCERS IN HER STATE-OF-THE-ART STUDIO.
When veteran dance pro Lindsay DiGiuseppe Salih opened Contemporary Ballet Dallas in Lakewood in 2005, her goal was to establish a school of the highest caliber. She wanted a positive place to explore techniques and shape dancers, personally and professionally.
In 2012 the school relocated to Mockingbird Central Plaza, across from Mockingbird Station. and is now in its 18th year of operation. “It was
“My studio is unique in that we offer the highest individualized quality training in a variety of techniques.”
the perfect location as I did not want to lose the community of families that we had rapport within Lakewood, and it was closer to Park Cities, where we live,” she says.
Lindsay builds programs for all dancers: a preschool/kindergarten program, recreational classes for all ages, a pre-professional program, and an adult program. She is proud that Contemporary Ballet Dallas has the largest adult dance program in the region.
“My studio is unique in that we offer the highest individualized quality training in a variety of techniques,” she says. “Each student is different in their journey, and we help our students reach their goals.”
In addition to managing the business, Lindsay teaches ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, pointe, and conditioning, as well as musical theatre, and character dance.
As for success stories, Lindsay’s dancers have been accepted into the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in the Dallas Arts District, plus Point Park University, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, SMU and more. She also has students who have pursued dance in musical theater, modern, ballet, and jazz companies, performing for Disney and establishing careers in modeling. A Dallas native, Lindsay graduated cum laude with a BFA in dance performance from SMU and performed with numerous companies.
Her daughters attend Highland Park Schools, where she’s volunteered over the years on everything from “pitching in on Field Day, to hanging artwork in the hallways before school started.”
“People in the Park Cities care about each other, and unite in times of strife to support individual families, community issues, education, etc. They take action to change things in their community, and that’s the strength of the Park Cities.”
Making Spirits
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
