Happy Holidays

C

oming from a large, New York Italian family, cherished traditions passed down through generations play a large role in celebrating the holidays—think of a five-hour long “Feast of the Seven Fishes” dinner with the entire family on Christmas Eve that lasts well into the night and classic Pantone and coffee while opening presents in the morning.

However, there are still smaller traditions, ones that have seemed to have faded away with time that I still hold dear when reminded of them. One such tradition literally hit me over the head the other week as I was (finally) dusting off my bookshelf. Tumbling off the shelf was a large, faded yellow hardcover book with a mother and father watching their children sleep in their beds with Christmas lights blurred in the background. I opened the book to the cover page and took a look. Inside, in my mother’s meticulously neat handwriting, was the words “To Danielle, From Santa.” Underneath were a few illegible words written in the shaky, unsure penmanship of a young child coated over with what looked like petrified Bonne Bell lipgloss. I opened to the first page and started reading, “Twas’ the night before Christmas…” A flood of memories washed over me as I was transported back to my childhood in Connecticut. My parents had bought me the book when I was little and I can still remember being four years old snuggled in front of the fireplace while my mother read it to me, then as a pudgy five-year-old struggling to get through all the “big words” by myself, then as a six-year-old whizzing through the book with ease as my parents proudly watched on. As I looked through the book, I realized that these are the types of traditions that truly create lasting memories, and I have now safely stowed away the book in my room so that one day, my own young children will be able to read it to me. In the spirit of holiday traditions and memories, I invite you to take a look at a whimsical winter wedding, how one family prepares their home for the holidays, some favorite cookie recipes, and, of course, our gift guide.

Remember December

D

ecember, already?! How is that possible? Weren’t we just hearing about record setting crowds at the Waste Management Phoenix Open? How about attending Spring Training? Or watching the the Summer Olympics (congratulations to some of our residents being medal winners!) How about all those 100+ degree days in a row? Then there were months and months of election hype. And now, a new President-Elect. Wow, what a year indeed.

So let’s focus on all the goodness December brings. Holidays, special events and parties, family and friends visiting, delicious foods and sweets, and yes, cooler weather. Although, for a former East Coaster and Midwesterner, “cooler” is still warm! This time of year typically conjures up memories of first snows, cozy clothes and crackling fires in a wood burning fireplace. For me, December is a festive month. One I look forward to for many reasons. The seasonal songs on the radio inspire me to sing along, with child-like enthusiasm. More than once, I’ve been caught performing in my car by someone in the car next

As we enter this final month of 2016, I encourage you to take a moment and reflect on the year that has flown by. Good days, bad days, lazy days or crazy days, we’ve experienced them all. Be sure to take note of the little things, embrace the imperfect things and be thankful for everything. To my family, my friends, my Paradise Valley Lifestyle team and all our partners in this publication, I wish you a joyous and blessed holiday season. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas! May your December be one to remember. Warmest regards,

RA Talent TAKING SUSHI TO THE NEXT LEVEL

R

A Sushi has been a big part of Scottsdale’s restaurant scene for almost 20 years when it first debuted in Downtown Scottsdale. Scott Kilpatrick and Richard Howland, the original founders, helped introduce sushi to Scottsdale, and now, nine states and 27 locations later, RA has proven sushi isn’t just a passing trend but a lasting staple. This past October, the North Scottsdale restaurant relocated to Scottsdale Towne Square at Scottsdale and Thunderbird Roads. General Manager Paul Underwood had the privilege of opening the new location and rolling out a new seasonal menu. Underwood brings with him 16 years of restaurant experience and much enthusiasm. His primary focus is customer service and making sure each server has extensive training to ensure every guest has an enjoyable RA experience. “RA Sushi is known for its innovative menu with creative sushi from the Sushi Bar, bold dishes from our Asian kitchen and handcrafted cocktails, all served up in a fun, energetic atmosphere,” states Underwood.

THE RA EXPERIENCE

When it comes to sushi, RA has nailed it, gaining a reputation for having some of the best in town. Executive Chef Tai Obata creates sushi masterpieces using fresh fish flown in daily and a wide variety of ingredients.

“For me, creating new sushi or taking a traditional dish and putting a creative twist on it is what makes RA unique. I love to be creative and try new things with sushi, blending new flavors and textures together,” explains Chef Obata. His signature specialty rolls include the Viva Las Vegas rolls, RA’lollipop, Crazy Monkey Roll, RA’ckin Roll, Scallop Dynamite Roll and Rainbow Roll. These beautiful, delicious creations are meticulously prepared to introduce your palate to a symphony of flavors. Not crazy about fish? Don’t dismay, as RA offers two kitchens and has a wonderful selection of other dishes, including Pork Tacos, Chicken Wings, Black Pepper Sirloin Steak, Tempura Shrimp and Vegetables, Lobster Spring Rolls and more.

a perfect spot for Happy Hour and Late Night Happy Hour, with drink and seasonal food specials. It’s also a great time to try a couple of their 75 sushi rolls in a relaxing atmosphere. But watch out, before you know it you too may get hooked on sushi!

and vegetables.

The restaurant’s modern, Asian-influenced design greets you with a warm, inviting atmosphere, while a fabulous oversized indoor/outdoor wrap-around bar is the perfect location for gathering with friends and co-workers. The covered patio includes a modern fire pit that sets the stage for intimate seating, and the dining area and sushi bar carry out the same warm red hues and wood tones seen throughout with spacious booths and tables. Not to be overlooked are the specialty cocktails, seasonal drinks, local craft beers, bottled beers and wine list. RA is

Winter Romance

A WHIMSICAL HOLIDAY WEDDING IN THE DESERT ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | EVENT PLANNER RACHEL TROYAN | PHOTOGRAPHY AMY & JORDAN PHOTOGRAPHY

F

rom the moment Mallory and Jackson got engaged they knew they wanted their wedding to be special; a beautiful reflection of their individual personalities coming together in a perfect union. However, with family flying in from Nashville, Tennesse for the big day and both bride and groom having busy work schedules, planning their dream wedding became much more of an undertaking than they had first imagined. That’s when they enlisted the help of Rachel Troyan, Lead Designer and Owner of Outstanding Occasions, to help bring their vision of a romantic winter wedding to life. “I remember my first conversation with the bride. She came to me and said she needed someone to just give them options, help with all the footwork and put all the pieces together,” says Troyan. Almost eight months after that initial conversation, the couple’s wedding day had finally arrived. On a crisp, sunny December afternoon, the two long-time loves became one as husband and wife in an intimate ceremony at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Immediately afterwards, friends and family were ushered to the Royal Palms, where the couple first got engaged, for an elegant reception. Upon arrival, guests were greeted with a sparkling glass of rose as they took in the ballroom decked in whites, ivory and metallics that created a whimsical winter feel.

16

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2016

“Since they were getting married in December, and they both loved Christmas, we wanted the look to be really romantic and chic but still evocative of a winter wonderland,” says Troyan. More like an intimate, elegant dinner party than a lavish fete, 50 of the couple’s closest friends and family laughed, chatted and swayed the night away to the tunes of a vintage jazz ensemble flown in from New York as they celebrated the momentous occasion. Halfway through the reception, the band halted as the wistful, romantic song “Bella Notte” (from Lady and the Tramp) came on and the couple took their first dance as husband and wife. The bride, adorned in a breathtaking custom dress and pale blue Jimmy Choos swirled around the dance floor as her eyes scanned the crowd filled with loved ones, then locked with her husband’s in a moment of perfect happiness. “That’s always the most amazing part; just seeing their face’s light up as everything they had envisioned, and more, comes true. That’s why I truly love my job,” says Troyan. As the evening came to a close, with the brilliant moon and stars lighting up the night sky, guests trickled out of the reception as the sounds of “When you wish upon a Star” softly filled the cool winter air, creating a magical ending to a day full of lasting memories.

THE DETAILS WARM WINTER WHITES: For the color scheme, Troyan incorporated white, ivory and metallics, inclusive of rose gold and gold, to play up the holiday theme. WRITTEN IN THE STARS: Invitations were designed by R.S.V.P Stationers back in Tennesse. To keep them elegant and formal, the couple incorporated a crest bearing their names throughout all the pieces. CHIC SEASONAL SETTINGS: The sophisticated linens draped over tables were all brought in from La Tavola Linen, with the head table adorned in linens with a soft, lacey overlay and the round tables sporting ones with small sequins in rose gold. BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS: The bride’s bouquet was comprised of allwhite florals by Petal Pusher with accents of green in the form of succulents and mistletoe, incorporating both the beauty of the desert and the holidays. Table centerpieces were in keeping with the same white and green theme, and fashioned in various heights to give the room added depth. GIFTS OF LOVE: Shimmering in the candlelight were delicate ornaments strategically placed on table settings as favors for a subtle, tasteful incorporation of the season. SOMETHING SPECIAL: Toward the end of the evening, guests were treated to a classic holiday favorite: a hot chocolate, milk and Christmas cookie bar that warmed both hands and hearts. SWEET FINISHES: With both bride and groom being avid Star Wars fans, their all-white cake was adorned with specially-crafted spaceships and topped with a quote from the movie.

T

he holiday season is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. From the joyful music, sparkly holiday fashion and celebrations with family and friends, to bringing cheer to those less fortunate, it’s a time to count our blessings and live in the moment. In my family, we go all out when it comes to decorations, activities, baking and gift giving. Having an 8-year-old around makes the season extra special too, as we experience the magic of Christmas through her eyes. This magic is built on our traditions and creating special memories we treasure together as a family. Some traditions my husband and I grew up with, while others are new. From the old tradition of opening the advent calendar each day in December as we countdown to Christmas and Santa’s arrival to the modern day addition of the Elf on the Shelf and his/her shenanigans (did you know they have an Elf dog now too?!), the excitement builds all month long. To foster the holiday spirit, we decorate our home early in November. It takes a full weekend to get everything up, so why not enjoy it all a little longer? Decorating is a family activity complete with a hot chocolate bar, mulled wine and other festive treats. My daughter and I focus on decorating the tree and inside of the house, reminiscing over special ornaments, while my husband is in charge of making the outside look like a holiday wonderland. 24

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2016

Even though I feel completely and utterly overwhelmed leading up to the holiday, once it’s here I relax with my family and simply enjoy the love and beauty that is Christmas. On Christmas Eve, after attending church, we head home for cheese fondue, mulled wine and Christmas cookies – a nod to my Scandinavian heritage. Everyone opens one present, and then it’s off to bed so Santa can come. On Christmas morning, Grandma brings over her special muffins and we all open presents before sitting down to a traditional Christmas dinner. Interesting how so many traditions revolve around food— great food does have a way of bringing everyone together! Cheers to a joyous holiday season and Happy New Year!! SIMPLE DIY HOLIDAY TABLE DÉCOR

Have some clear glass containers or vases sitting around? Here’s an easy way to add an extra sparkle to your table or room. Arrange a complimentary set of at least three glass containers – an odd number works best, plus staggered heights and widths. Add colorful ball tree ornaments, pinecones, greenery or thick ribbon (use your imagination!), along with mini LED light strings (with attached battery pack, so you avoid unsightly cords) to each container. Add greenery – faux or real – around or behind the containers, and voilà!

GRANDMA’S CHRISTMAS MUFFINS

Combine ¼ cup sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon, set mixture aside. In a separate bowl, stir together: 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ cup sugar 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon salt In another bowl, combine: 1 beaten egg ½ cup almond milk 1/3 cup melted butter Then add to flour mixture and stir until moist. Pour into lightly greased muffin pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes, or until golden. Dip tops right away into 3 tablespoons of melted butter, then into the cinnamon sugar mixture and serve warm. For more fashion, beauty and lifestyle inspiration, visit MomStyleLab.com. Parting Thoughts

A Bouquet of Gifts ARTICLE DEBBIE GABY

34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2016

A

bouquet starts with seeds of hope and inspiration, and that is exactly what I have given in my book, In My Wildest Dreams. . .I Never Imagined This Inspirational Bouquet of Gifts. With humor, compassion, love and healthy doses of Southern charm, I share the stories of my life which shaped, challenged and inspired me to become the woman I am today. Readers will find that In My Wildest Dreams. . . is joyful, uplifting and inspiring— a testimony that the gifts in our lives come to us in interesting and often awe-inspiring ways; in different shapes and colors and scents, one more beautiful than the next. My choices led me down an amazing road, from rural Texas to entrepreneurship and corporate boardrooms, and finally, to a life centered around philanthropy and giving back to those who face challenges and choices as daunting as those I faced decades ago. Within my book, In My Wildest Dreams. . . I reflect on a lifetime of choices and the opportunities they offered me to learn and grow. My beautiful Mama, Francis, shared

her wisdom with me through quotes and fables, along with her unwavering love, which was my foundation of belief in myself. Then years later, my 23 inspirational words I gave to a good friend, Jane Seymour, who returned the favor by sending me a beautiful painting she had done, a Bouquet of Gifts, along with my Mama’s fables, ignited the passion within me to write this inspirational book. For all women across the world, my wish for you is that you find your own courage, strength and motivation to move ahead from any situation you find unacceptable. I have two wishes for everyone who reads my book, as I hope it motivates them to never settle for less than they deserve in life and to never ever give up until they are living the life of their dreams, which, as I say, “Sweet Dreams.” A portion of the proceeds of my book will benefit Debbie Gaby Charities and those in our community that we support. You may secure copies anywhere books are sold and at DebbieGaby.com.
