How Are You Invested?

When asked this question, the tendency might be to think of money: stocks and bonds, retirement funds, real estate holdings, etc.

But most of us are invested in much more: our health, our families, our homes, our communities, our futures...

For this issue, we look at some ways our neighbors and friends are invested.

In our Financial Buzz column (page 22), Credent wealth advisor Tracy Miller looks at monetary investments. Why do so many people fail to invest their funds now for a larger payout later? She cites several possible reasons, including a tendency to read too much in media headlines, which focus on negative news rather than balanced reporting, and a desire to "keep up with the Joneses." Patience is key, she says.

In our "Now Open" column (page 14), you'll read about First National Bank (1NB), with roots dating back to the late 1800s in Ardmore. After helping that city prosper and grow, 1 NB went on to establish branches in several locations across the state, most recently in Edmond, where banking veteran Jim Canton was tapped to serve as senior vice president and market president. Like all First National Bank branches, they're deeply invested in this vibrant city of almost 100,000.

As already noted, not all investments are purely financial in nature. In our "Must See" column (page 26), you'll see how, over the past 10 years, Exhibit C Gallery has been giving indigenous artists from across the world a place to exhibit and sell their work. By investing in artwork by First American artists, the gallery is supporting the artists and the broader purpose of recognition and celebration of indigenous lives. You'll want to go see their latest exhibition, “Seeds of Tradition: Expressions of Beadwork in Contemporary First American Art.”

And in our "Education Corner" column (page 18), you'll read about Leadership Oklahoma City's investment in high school students via its Youth Leadership Exchange. Established in 1995, YLX is designed to develop future community leaders by connecting teenagers to many of the city’s most influential citizens, businesses and nonprofit leaders.

We hope you enjoy reading about how some of your friends and neighbors are investing their time, talent and funds to help people grow their financial portfolios, strengthen their communities, and develop the potential of its future leaders. What are you invested in?

Jimmy

INVESTED IN EDMOND

Since the late 1800s, First National Bank—or 1NB—has helped grow Ardmore—a city with a population of just under 25,000 located in south-central Oklahoma—into the flourishing and vibrant community it is today.

Jim Canton to Lead Edmond Branch
“We understand the needs of our community because this is where we live. We build lasting relationships that are a win-win for the bank and our clients.”

Established in 1891, prior to statehood, 1NB over the years has built a legacy of community, support and top-notch service in Ardmore while establishing a foundation of soundness and stability that few banks can offer.

The bank’s successful investment in the Ardmore community has prompted expansion into surrounding areas: 1NB now has branches in Norman, Sulphur, Lone Grove, Marietta, Velma, Ringling and Madill. In November, a new branch in Edmond further expanded their ability to serve the people of Oklahoma.

Jim Canton, a veteran banking professional with over 45 years of banking experience, was tapped to serve as senior vice president and market president of the 1NB Edmond branch, where he is excited about leading the bank’s investment efforts into this vibrant city of almost 100,000.

Jim brings a wealth of expertise to his newest role in the financial industry. In 1996, he founded First Commercial Bank in Edmond, which under his direction grew from a start-up bank to over $300 million in assets. He also served as senior lending officer at Quail Creek Bank, president and CEO of Oklahoma State Bank, and market president for Bank SNB and Simmons Bank.

Throughout his career, this banking veteran has helped increase the stability of these banking institutions and led with integrity and trust.

Like all First National Bank management, Jim is deeply rooted in the community in which he serves. He strives to foster strong relationships with customers based on respect and trust and strives to make the banking experience convenient, giving customers the best experience possible.

Veteran banking professional Jim Canton was tapped to serve as senior vice president and branch manager of the 1NB Edmond branch.

“The experience we have in the communities we serve makes us a reliable and trusted partner. We understand the needs of our community because this is where we live. We build lasting relationships that are a win-win for the bank and our clients.”

He credits his success to a work ethic based on integrity, respect and hard work instilled in him by his father. Those same values have been a cornerstone of the banking organizations in which he’s been a leader.

During his four years with Oklahoma State Bank, the bank attained its highest level of earnings, expanded into Edmond and became poised for continued growth. He expects similar success at 1NB’s new Edmond location.

Over the past three decades, Jim has excelled in developing key market niches, including the Hispanic community, the healthcare industry and the commercial real estate sector. Jim enjoys mentoring young financial analysts and lenders while thriving on the challenge of building market share and presence for his banks.

“I always advise the next generation of bank leaders to know who they work for: their stockholders, clients and employees,” he reflects. “No one succeeds without a lot of help from others.”

To best serve its clients, the Edmond branch of 1NB employs high-quality, experienced staff members who excel in serving customers’ personal, professional and commercial banking needs. The Edmond branch, located on 33rd Street between Kelly Avenue and Santa Fe Avenue, offers a full range of loan, deposit and treasury management services. Jim said the focus for the Edmond branch

is commercial banking, specializing in commercial cash management and deposit services, working capital and equipment financing, and commercial real estate lending.

“All of our branches, including our new Edmond branch, are designed to offer a level of private and professional banking that is unique and distinctive. Our branch feels professional and comfortable,” Jim adds.

“We strive to make timely decisions, enabling our customers to quickly move forward with transactions and projects knowing they have

the support of their bank. Because we know the local and national business environments, we’re able to offer knowledge and guidance to help our clients succeed.”

1NB’s unequaled customer service and team approach in providing solutions for clients and embracing new opportunities follows in the footsteps of the “mother” bank.

MOLDING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Leadership Oklahoma City’s YLX Program Nearing Milestone
EDUCATION CORNER | EDUCATION 18

For more than 30 years, Leadership Oklahoma City has been a force for positive change in the metro area. The organization works to develop and support prominent members of the business community and nonprofit sector, and their impact extends also to the next generation of future leaders.  Leadership OKC has trained over 3,500 adult and youth leaders to work toward improving their community.

Youth Leadership Exchange (YLX), the organization’s youth development program, is Oklahoma City’s premiere high school leadership program and engages more than 100 outstanding students each school year. Designed to develop future community leaders, YLX works to connect teenagers to many of the city’s most influential citizens, businesses and nonprofit leaders. The program meets monthly throughout the school year and is offered at no cost to participants.

“YLX was established in 1995, so we have been changing lives for nearly 30 years,” explains Lesley Jones, YLX program director. “This is a huge milestone, especially looking back on the generations of leaders that have been allowed to grow and learn in the program.”

A Leadership OKC alumna, Lesley stepped into her role at YLX this past August. She also participated in a similar high school leadership program at her alma mater in Edmond, so she knew firsthand about the important impact that programs like YLX can offer.

“I was just drawn into this opportunity,” she says. “I have always been passionate about helping high school students find a way to connect with likeminded people. Our purpose is to identify the next generation of leaders, connect them with current Oklahoma City community leaders, and allow them to realize opportunities in their hometown. The end goal is for YLX students to picture themselves stepping into those roles and pouring back into OKC. I enjoy getting to help shape this program.”

Lesley says that one benefit the program provides for participants is that students can list a well-known and well-respected organization on their future resumes and college applications, and YLX staff can write meaningful recommendations based on their actual abilities.

“Being able to connect students to professionals in the industry is one of the biggest advantages that we offer,” she adds. “I have seen so many instances where it has opened doors for internships, scholarships and other opportunities.”

YLX offers three tracks for interested students: Leadership Skills, Youth in Action and Youth Council of OKC. These programs are designed to strengthen crucial personal skills, such as self-awareness and communication skills, as well as skills that will benefit them in their future workplaces.

The YLX Leadership Skills track mirrors the Leadership Oklahoma City experience, focusing on personal leadership skills, team building, networking and effective communication. The program builds on existing leadership skills that the students already have and allows them to build a more holistic view of what true leadership encompasses. It also exposes participants to different careers and allows them to learn directly from leaders in that industry.

The Youth in Action track allows participants to focus on supporting nonprofits. Students select a specific area or cause of interest and explore the fundraising process. Participants raise funds, collaborate to write a mission statement, and then issue a call to local nonprofits that fit within the mission statement to submit grant applications. Then, they work as a team to evaluate the grant applications, conduct interviews and evaluate presentations to decide who to award the funds.

In the Youth Council track, participants explore city operations through a partnership with the Oklahoma City City Council. Two students from each city ward are selected to work with their city counselors, and two at-large students work directly with the mayor of Oklahoma City. Students learn about important issues affecting each ward, as well as municipal services and partnering organizations.

Applications from interested students will be accepted through April 15. Lesley says that the diversity of students who participate allows the program to have a widespread impact in the community, and to make a tangible difference in the lives of the students involved.

“Today, I believe that young people in Oklahoma City see countless opportunities to have a variety of careers and interests. I feel like the attitudes of the generations between my class and that of today’s class truly shifted and grew with the landscape of Oklahoma City. I don’t think staying in their hometown is the ‘fallback plan’ anymore. I think they have been shown the route, followed the lead and now the path is clear,” Lesley concludes.

“Our biggest focus is that they leave our program knowing who they are and feeling confident in who they are. We are proud to give them that confidence as they begin planning the next chapter of their life.”

INVESTING VS. HUMAN NATURE

SUCCESSFUL INVESTING FOR THE FUTURE REQUIRES SELF-DISCIPLINE TODAY

The word investment is traditionally defined as the “commitment of resources to achieve later benefits.” If an investment involves money, then it can be defined as a “commitment of money to receive more money later.” Who doesn’t want more money later?

Sounds simple enough, but many people fail to appreciate the value of time as defined here. When you think about time in relation to your life, does anything pop into your head? Close your eyes, think about time, and see what I mean. One thing I hear often is how fast the kids grow up.

For me, I think “WOW, it has been 24 years since Y2K.” As a numbers person, I was fascinated by the idea that in my lifetime the yearly

FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES
22

clock would roll over from 1999 to 2000. As I aged, it got closer and closer but seemed like a very long time. It was inevitable that it came along just as predicted. When I think about it now, though, it seems impossible that it happened 24 years ago. How did time go by so fast?  The bottom line is that time is our friend when it comes to investing and you will find that it passes more quickly than you think.

The idea of investing money for future use was explained to me before the Y2K event happened, and I decided to try it. Now I have the experience of the value of time from a stock market point of view with my own investments. Simplistically speaking, the odds of having “more money later” by investing money now are statistically high, given time. So why is it that many fail to take advantage?

In my experience, there are three main reasons why the average person fails to invest their funds now for a larger payout later.

Fear of losing (or missing out on something else) – I believe this is the primary reason many people decide against investing on a regular basis. The media focuses on losses in the market. Losses make news. Wins do not. News reports give only the negative side of the story. A sound investment strategy is based on longterm research, a diversified portfolio approach and annual rebalancing to manage risk of current economic and political events.

Lack of trust – Ever since the Great Depression of the 1930s, people have held a mistrust of the stock market. My thought on this is to look at results and consider … anything is possible, many things have happened, but what is most probable (and easily verifiable) are the facts: that the market can, in the long term, be trusted to provide money later for money invested now, given time and the proper approach as mentioned above.

Susceptibility to avarice – Avarice is a form of greed referring specifically to wealth and money. It’s not hard to find stories about fantastical losses experienced by businesses, individuals and even investment managers when the desire to “win big” overcame the discipline to have a diversified portfolio that is managed for long-term results rather than overnight wins.

Discipline is the key to calm in the midst of chaos when considering making an investment of money now to receive more money later.

A trustworthy investment advisor will help steer you in the right direction. They will help you understand how your fears and insecurities are keeping you from accumulating the funds you desire down the road—all in the amount of time it takes (or less) to see the year 2000 in the rearview window.

EXHIBIT EXAMINES ROLES OF BEADWORK IN FIRST AMERICAN LIFE

‘Seeds of Tradition’

MUST SEE | ARTS + CULTURE

““Each piece I create has a purpose, I spend a great deal of time on my pieces and so they carry stories with them and names.

Exhibit C Gallery in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown District is more than a gallery and exhibit space. The 4,000-square-foot gallery houses works of art from First American artists in a variety of mediums. Exhibit C’s staff assists collectors in curating collections and offers brokerage services.

Opened in 2014, the gallery is a platform for First American voices and artistry. Over the past 10 years, it's given indigenous artists from across the world a place to exhibit and sell their work.

“The art created by our First American artists is a continuation of their culture, heritage and indigenous identity,” said Katie Goodnight, tourism arts manager for the Chickasaw Nation.

Investing in artwork by First American artists supports the artists and the broader purpose of recognition and celebration of indigenous lives.

Artists like Andrea Day bring their own life experiences into their art. Andrea, an Oklahoma-based mixed media artist who uses acrylic and hand-sewn beadwork on canvas, says her designs are influenced by her Mvskoke (Muscogee) heritage and language, Fuswalgi (Bird Clan) and ancient Southeastern Woodland designs, all while guided by nature.

Andrea’s intricate beadwork is on display now in the current exhibition, “Seeds of Tradition: Expressions of Beadwork in Contemporary First American Art.” This exhibition explores various ways beadwork is used as adornment, storytelling and tradition-keeping. An enduring and deeply cultural art form, beadwork continues to resonate today as an iconic symbol of indigenous identity and artistry.

The exhibit also features artwork by Yonavea Hawkins (Caddo), Valerie Kagan (Cherokee) and Lynn Traylor (Navajo).

Yonavea, a Caddo artist who works in a variety of mediums, including beadwork, drawing, painting and twill

basketry, learned to sew and bead cultural items for herself and her family. Whether doing loom work or two-needle appliqué beadwork, her designs are a combination of traditional and contemporary using cut beads.

Valerie is a U.S. Army veteran, a mom, a wife and an artist who creates traditional Cherokee beadwork and art from a variety of distinct mediums, including metal, wire, shell, vintage Czech beads, wool, silk and pearls. Her specialty medium is twopoint needle appliqué beadwork and handwoven and twined textiles.

Valerie said her art is inspired by mound builder iconography, abstract floral designs on antique beadwork of the five tribes and how those designs reflect their ceremonies and what they treasure most in their culture, even well into present times. She uses the iconography from those antiques to build beaded art with stroud cloth and beads that are well over 100 years old.

Lynn is an interdisciplinary Navajo fashion artist known for her detail and intricate patterns on contemporary fashion garments, specifically wearable art beadwork. She explores themes of traditional storytelling, feminine energy, masculine energy, resilience, love and loss, as well as the complexities of historic and contemporary indigenous experiences across beading, fashion and installation.

“Each piece I create has a purpose,” Lynn said. “I spend a great deal of time on my pieces and so they carry stories with them and names. They come to life, which is why I bless each piece (with cedar) before they go to their new homes and/or owners.”

“Seeds of Tradition” remains on exhibit through June 30.

Exhibit C Gallery is open daily from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at 1 E. Sheridan, Oklahoma City. For more information, visit ExhibitCGallery.com.

EMBRACING A PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUR BODY

Wellness isn’t about restricting — it’s really about giving. Giving to yourself and to your body in a way that allows them both to thrive. The cool part? The things that give to your body naturally give to your mind, your hormones, your earth, your relationships, and so on — it’s all beautifully interconnected in that way.

Eat your greens, cook at home, choose local produce and quality meats, don’t be scared of healthy fats — but also support local farmers, move in a way that makes your body and mind feel good, prioritize times of mindfulness and stillness.

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 6 oz. filets of wild caught salmon

• 1 Tbsp. avocado oil

• 1 Tbsp. coconut aminos

• Zest and juice from one lemon

• 1 Tbsp. stone ground mustard

• 1 4 oz. container coconut yogurt, unsweetened

• 2 Tbsp. fresh dill, minced

• 2 Tbsp. capers, drained and minced

• Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Marinate the salmon in the lemon juice, coconut aminos, and stone ground mustard for up to two hours.

2. Drizzle salmon with avocado oil, sprinkle with salt and ground pepper, and broil on high for five to seven minutes, until cooked to desired temperature.

3. Mix coconut cream, lemon zest, dill, capers, and ground pepper together.

4. Top salmon with coconut cream, serve with roasted or sautéed veggies, brown or cauliflower rice, or fresh greens. Enjoy!

BRIGHT to add flair WAYS 5

1. Delicate glass flowers are woven together in this intricately detailed fixture, lending a whimsical and feminine air to any space! Seen in Henry Homes Interiors’ Lavender Haze teen room in the 2003 Oklahoma Symphony Show House.

2. A massive, angula luminaire, formed from wrought iron sheets of perforated metal in an antique gold leaf finish. Evokes power, strength and masculine energy.

3. Mimicking the Century plant of the American desert with 22 lights surrounded by faceted crystals, this gilded chandelier gives a glam edge to the Agave plant. Henry Home Interiors friend, designer and client, Sheri Simon, chose to go BIG with two above her dining room table.

4. A wrought iron frame of concentric circles in a gold leaf finish adorns the ceiling of Henry Home Interiors’ Barbie sitting room in the 2022 Oklahoma Symphony Show House.

5. A truly one-of-a-kind option to grace your one-ofa-kind home! Each chandelier is crafted from saddle oyster shells that are hand-placed in florets, each organically unique.
