Home Sweet Home

MARCH 2017 PUBLISHER

Dear Readers,

Matthew Perry | Matthew@LifestylePubs.com

Welcome to the Home issue! As someone that has stayed in quite a bit lately with a new baby, the issue of home is especially near to my heart. Finding the space where you can really relax is a tricky thing. Luckily here in the Northland, we have plenty to choose from so there's something for everyone! As one of the largest residential areas in the KC metropolitan region, the Northland is chock-full of cozy neighborhoods at every price point. What you get at each price point varies, of course. Want the little luxuries like community pools, tennis courts, and golf clubhouses? Find out where to find them and how much they cost in our story by Pete Dulin, Shopping for the Right Sized Home in the Northland. For those that have the house but not the furnishings to make it feel like home, head to Samsara Vintage Home. While there are endless possibilities at their downtown Parkville shop, it's the spirit of cousins, Juan Carlos and Alex Iglesias and their partner, Michael Coyazo, that will really inspire you. For this business, the journey was just as important as the destination. No matter where you live, the most important part of any home is the people that live there. As March comes in like a lamb, let's enjoy the beautiful weather, the Snake Saturday parade and hopefully, a little bit of luck this year. Speaking of those special people, we are looking for the women and men in your life that have made a difference for our May and June Women's and Men's issues. Do you have a mother, father, sister, brother, grandparent or friend that stands out? I would love to hear about them! For consideration, please email me at RMurphy@lifestylepubs.com by March 31.

Polzin, Precision Collision Centers’ very talented painter, painted the silver 1962 Corvette Convertible that went across the prestigious BarrettJackson stage on January 21 and sold for $264,000. Even pro golfer, Bubba Watson, had an eye for the Corvette and placed a bid on it.

BE FABULOUS IN YOUR 40S For most women, turning 40 is a milestone. Today, women in their

forties are embracing their fabulousness in fearless ways. Ancy Maruthanal, MD, an internist at Meritas Health North Kansas City and medical director of North Kansas City Hospital’s Club W, believes you start with what’s on the inside: your health. Baseline tests become more important in your forties because they help you and your doctor monitor changes in your health over time. Doctors recommend focusing on three areas: 1. General health. Ask your provider to order a cholesterol panel and a thyroid test. If you’re at risk for diabetes, request a blood glucose test. 2. Eye health. Have a baseline exam at 40, and then follow up every 2-4 years. 3. Breast health. Have a clinical breast exam done annually, and get a mammogram every 1-2 years. One of the biggest health changes for women in their forties is perimenopause, the beginning of menopause. “Hot flashes can be the

8

most debilitating symptom,” Maruthanal notes. “I recommend women get plenty of exercise to keep their energy levels up and help with sleep.” She also suggests talking with your doctor about medications that can ease irritability and hot flashes. For more of Maruthanal's insight, grab a girlfriend and make plans to attend “Live Healthy: Be Fabulous in Your 40s.” on March 23, 2017, NKCH Campus, Pavilion, 5:30-6:30 p.m. The event is free, but registration is required. Josh and Sheri Crawford welcome you to their pizza dream.

n the United States, it's hard to swing a stick without hitting a pizza place. In the Northland that's even more true with old favorites like Kelso's, Northern Lights and Ikey's around. But there's a new kid in town and they are putting the fun back in the pizza place. J & S Pizza in Liberty is the dream of Josh and Sheri Crawford. The couple met while working at a pizza parlour and their dream of owning their own place has finally been realized. While they may not have reinvented the form, they are certainly proving that it can be fun to go out for pizza again after years of delivery mediocrity. The restaurant offers more than just pizza. Their appetizer menu includes cheese bread, stuffed breadsticks and even pizza dip--a warm bowl of marinara sauce blanketed in bubbling mozzarella cheese. Salads round out the starters and if one is feeling virtuous, they could build a dinner salad using the same ingredients that one can find on the pies. The pizza menu itself has the standards--combo, meat lovers, etc. and Crawford says that they are still the best sellers. But for the more adventurous diners, the J & S favorites beckon. They specialize in chicken pizzas, partially, says Crawford because chicken pairs so well with alternative sauces like BBQ and alfredo. When I visited with family, that's what we chose. ith a grand opening at the end of January, Endurance House is the only store of its kind in the Kansas City area, providing

specialty running, walking, cycling, swimming, shoes, and gear, along with the support needed to lead a healthy lifestyle. Endurance House is a franchise out of Madison, Wisconsin, and with local couple and triathletes, Scott Sharkey and Anne Moyers, the Tiffany Springs store becoming the 16th store in the franchise. “Our roots are here, and we saw the need for this kind of store for our community. The location is perfect; there are trails for cycling and close proximity to Smithville Lake for open swims and trails. We signed the lease in October 2016, and every day since then we’ve put in our own blood, sweat, and tears to get the store ready. We are following our passions, and when you have your best friend working beside you, the days fly by and it’s not really work, ” Sharkey says. Focusing on everything needed to be active, they are more than just a shoe store. From shoes to bikes to clothing to swim acces-

sories, Endurance House wants to be a place where customers feel comfortable. A fireplace flanked by four comfortable arm chairs create a unique atmosphere not usually found in a shoe store. CONTINUED >

“We want to build a community. We want a place where people can gather to tell stories, where we fill a need, whether it is for swimming, biking or shoes, and a place where you can feel comfortable. In just the few short weeks we’ve been open, it’s already become a place where people come to sit and talk,” Moyer says. In addition to purchasing gear, Endurance House also strives to provide services to help athletes prepare for big races. “We have lots of programs beginning. We have a free Tuesday Night Run group, a mix of walkers and runners from all abilities who are getting together. As the weather gets warmer, we’ll have even more people joining. We have a Ladies Night coming up, as well as starting yoga on Sunday mornings. We’re starting a Triathlon Team Training, with training plans, support and coaching, and more for every distance, from the most experienced to the just beginning, from Sprint, Olympic, Half and Full Ironmans,” Moyer says. Supporting area runs such as the KC Marathon, the Liberty Hospital half marathon, and the Psycho WyCo Run, the Sharkeys feel providing the best shoes available is important. With their Personalized Movement Profile, they provide not only the shoes, but the service to decide that is the best shoe. “We carry four shoe lines that are the best out there. Most running shoes have lost their touch, and went to a one style fits everyone shoe. We want to provide the best shoe choices in the area. Shoes are personal; it has to fit, be comfortable, and has to last. Our Personalized Movement Profile starts with putting a customer in a neutral shoe, and taking a video so he/she can see where the problem areas are in how he/she runs. Then we put them in an appropriate shoe that corrects that problem, and take another video so they can see side-by-side the differences the shoes make,” Moyer says. Located at 8940 Skyview Drive in the Tiffany Springs Marketplace, they are centrally located in the Northland with convenient hours. Check them out on Facebook at Endurance House Kansas City or on the web at KansasCity.EnduranceHouse.com. With the services, products, and expertise the owners are providing, you have no excuse not to work towards a healthy lifestyle.

Northland HOW MUCH DOES YOUR BUDGET BUY?

T

he real estate market continues to tighten in 2017. Prospective homebuyers have options

within several price ranges on the market in the Northland; however, it is crucial to be prepared and decisive when shopping for a dream abode. Being forearmed with knowledge about what to expect for hard-earned dollars can help make planning and deciding easier. Candi

&

Tiffany Greens offers residents prime views

$350,000 “Overall, Clay County has had more new construction available in the $350,000 and under range,” says Sweeney. “Clay County has been very good at catering to new construction in the $250–350,000 price range. Platte County has fewer new homes under $300,000.” New homes will be 2,500 to 2,800 squarefoot and include features such as granite countertops and a kitchen backsplash. White kitchen cabinets are “back.” This price will have an unfinished lower level. “If buyers choose an existing home, they will have a finished lower-level, three-car garage, mature trees, and 3,500 to 4,500 square-feet of space,” says Sweeney. “The home might need updating, but what great values for an established neighborhood.” Subdivisions in Platte and Clay County which boast new construction include: Thousand Oaks, Chapel Ridge, Seven Bridges, Tiffany Woods at Rose Creek, Riverstone, Staley Hills, Fountain Hills which is “growing like crazy,” says Sweeney, Benson Place and Northview Meadows also have the moderate price ranges.

of the golf course, starting at $350,000.

$450,000 TO $550,000 New homes in this range will tout 3,500– 4,000 square feet. “There’s less availability now because of a lack of inventory in this range,” says Sweeney. Features that may be included in these homes range from wet bars to media rooms and tile roof and stucco on the exterior. Where to look: Forest Ridge Estates, Montebella, Riss Lake, Thousand Oaks, Tiffany Greens, Copper Leaf, Staley Farms, and Woodneath Farms. “Twin Creeks is going to be an up-and-coming subdivision by Hunt Midwest,” says Sweeney. Straddling both Clay and Platte County between I-29 and 169-Highway, the 15,000-acre Thousand Oaks doesn't feel like midrange with community amenities like pools, planned tennis courts and lots of green space.

RIGHT-SIZED HOME (CON TI N U ED)

$750,000 AND ABOVE Home in this upper-tier price range may include popular features like a media room, stucco, or stone work, a hearth room, upper-end appliances, spalike master suite, and four-car garage. Additional amenities include outdoor living spaces with a fireplace and swimming pool. The master-planned community may have a golf course. “These homes are usually custom-built and run in the 5,000 to 7,000 square-foot range,” says Sweeney. “There are more upper-end opportunities in Platte County. There’s a lot of money there and the county has a private golf course.” Where to look: Shoal Creek, The National, Staley Farms, Tiffany Greens, Stone Gate, and Riss Lake. “Tremont Manor and Briarcliff West are making a comeback,” says Sweeney. “They are older homes but were premier property when people first began moving north.”

36

Northland Lifestyle | March 2017

The Stone Gate community offers luxury finishes and expanded amenities starting at $750,000.

TRENDS Overall in the housing market, homes available reflect better quality construction and materials with less square footage. “There’s a need for more maintenance-provided places for empty nesters,” says Sweeney. “More Millennials are starting to purchase homes. They want homes with less maintenance so they can ‘lockand-leave’ for the weekend.” No matter what your budget, there is a home out there for you. What is in your dream home?

(CON TI N UED)

Make every meal a special event by bringing the garden to the table. Serve your favorite dishes made from homegrown ingredients. Then allow guests to add their own herbal seasonings right from the garden or container. Start by growing the ingredients for your favorite recipes and beverages. Consider those, like tomatoes, that taste best fresh from the garden. Or create a salad bar by filling window boxes and raised beds with greens, hot peppers, green onions and more. Just hand your guests a plate and let them create their own fresh salad. Dress up the table or balcony with a few containers of herbs on your patio, deck or near the grill. Use small herb containers as edible centerpieces. Just include a pair of garden scissors and allow your family and guests to season the meal to their taste. Add a bit of color to your meal with edible flowers. Try nasturtium and daylily blossoms stuffed with cream cheese, calendula petals sprinkled on your salad and mint leaves atop a slice of chocolate cake. Include a few herbs and vegetables that can be blended, muddled or added to your favorite beverage. Use the hollow stems of lovage as a straw for your tomato juice or bloody Mary. You’ll enjoy the celery flavor this edible straw provides. Or pluck a few mint or rosemary leaves to flavor iced tea and lemonade. Just be sure the vegetables and flowers you select are free of pesticides. Remove the bitter tasting pollen from edible flowers. Start your party preparation in the garden. Once you compile your list of favorites prepare your garden and containers for a productive growing and entertaining season. In the garden, add several inches of organic matter such as compost to the top eight to twelve inches of soil. You’ll improve drainage in clay soil and increase the water holding ability in sandy soils. This is also a good time to incorporate an organic nitrogen fertilizer, like Milorganite (milorganite.com) into the soil. This slow release fertilizer provides needed nutrients for six to eight weeks. Then be sure to add a mid-season boost to keep your garden healthy and productive. 42

Northland Lifestyle | March 2017

For container plantings, select a pot with drainage holes and fill it with a quality potting mix. This is also a good time to add an organic nitrogen fertilizer which will eliminate the need for weekly feedings. Just give containers a second application mid-season. Mulch the soil with shredded leaves, evergreen needles or other organic matter to suppress weeds and conserve moisture. As the mulch breaks down it improves the soil for future plantings. Harvest regularly to keep your plants looking good and producing. Cut the outer leaves of leaf lettuce when four to six inches tall and it will keep growing new leaves. Pick peppers and tomatoes when fully ripe, so the plant continues flowering and forming new fruit. And dress up the table with a bouquet of your favorite garden flowers. Pick a few extras to send home with your guests and they’ll surely remember your special gathering filled with homegrown flavor and beauty. SETTING A NEW PACE THE JAGUAR F-PACE IS ONE FEISTY FELINE ARTICLE EMILY GLASER

F

rom the anticipatory hum of a purr to the all-out, pedal-down roar, there’s something about a Jaguar that makes your heart beat a little faster. With a growling engine and feline sleekness, the new F-PACE, a medium luxury SUV, is all Jaguar. “We designed the all-new F-PACE to be, first and foremost, a Jaguar,” says Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar. But it’s so much more than the wee convertibles of the automobile maker’s past. “The F-PACE is an all-weather Jaguar sports car, life-proofed for five people and their belongings.” The first thing you’ll notice about the F-PACE is its strapping silhouette, the very lines of which exude untapped power. Muscular rear haunches and an angular rear window reveal a spacious trunk area, perfect for storing sports equipment and Sunday’s golf bag. You’ll find Jaguar’s signature in the single-sheet body, thanks to the brand’s expertise in aluminum. Everything about the vehicle’s exterior whispers of the inherent athleticism of the performance SUV. And that’s truly what the F-PACE is—a performance sports utility vehicle, designed to get you and your four passengers to the ends of the Earth and your next adventure.

But who said adventures had to be messy or minimal? The luxurious, spacious interior brings Jaguar’s meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship to a modern world. Slip into the available leather sports seats and experience slick comfort with 14 different adjustments, heating and cooling. And with the 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster, every bell and whistle is at your fingertips. Remember what we said about this being a decisively modern Jaguar? Look no further than the advanced driver assistance systems for proof of the F-PACE’s technological savviness. The All Surface Progress Control controls the throttle and brakes, so the driver can concentrate on—and truly enjoy—the fun of steering. The advanced stereo camera delivers Autonomous Emergency Braking and a pedestrian detection to initiate full braking automatically, plus Lane Departure Warnings and Lane Keep Assist to help drivers avoid collisions. Of course, the F-PACE also offers blind spot monitoring and parking assist, but our favorite feature might be the Intelligent Speed Limiter, which can automatically increase or decrease the vehicle’s max speed depending on the local speed limit.

Those modern touches continue far beyond the actual driving experience. The Jaguar InControl Touch infotainment system is standard in the F-PACE, and it’s as intuitive and modern as these systems can get. The navigation system is leagues above the piddly version you’ll find on your phone with turn-by-turn instructions that can show on the head-up display right before your very eyes. Features like Commute Mode memorize your route to work and automatically offer alternative routes in the face of congestion or traffic. Don’t forget that this is an SUV. It’s been tested at locations around the world, from the most frigid tundras to the driest deserts, to ensure every tire grips the road and offers you the thrill of an exhilarating, but always safe, ride. Both the 3.01 340 hp or 380 hp supercharged gasoline V6 engines with 8-speed transmissions offer four-wheel power and torque to get you across every highway and dirt road out there with oomph. With a polished and almost surreptitious aesthetic and a ruggedness prepared to take you anywhere, the F-PACE is all class, all comfort, and all Jaguar. 2017 F-PACE Base Price: $40,990 Fuel Economy: 18 city/23 highway Horsepower: 340 to 380 horsepower Engine: 2.0-Liter Turbocharged 180hp In-Line 4-Cylinder Diesel AWD; 3.0Liter Supercharged 340hp V6 Gasoline AWD; 3.0-Liter Supercharged 380hp V6 Gasoline AWD Photos courtesy of Jaguar For more information, visit jaguar.com.
